Reviews for The Hotel on Pownal

Review 1:Room was very spacious, bed extremely comfortable. Not your typical thin blanket and cheap mattress. Had a fantastic sleep. Breakfast was the best I've had complimentary at a hotel in years!

Review 2:On a quiet street and just a block away from the Confederation Centre and the Mall and all the restaurants and boutiques We didn't have to take our car. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 3:The staff was friendly and helpful when we asked about directions to our destination. Pleased with the continental breakfast and the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable.

Review 4:Great location..block off main street and few blocks from prime area. Comfortable beds. Great breakfast..fresh baked goods..nice. Staff can't do enough. And the free "happy hour" after a day biking nice touch.

Review 5:Everything was excellent, however if I had to pick one thing, it would be the staff. They were extremely courteous, efficient and made us feel very at home.

Review 6:At the end of the day it is still a 2 story walk up motel and not a hotel, that has been overhauled - lobby and dining room well conceived of and executed. Room - good decor concept but workmanship in the execution of those ideas was poor - wall paper seams opening up, 3 colors of caulk on the tub surround (minor mould in the corners of the tub) - water damage on the ceiling edges in the bathroom, painted over not repaired, but also painted sloppily onto the hi-end wall paper then sort of wiped off - yada yada - if you paid $90 for the room it was ok - at $200 a night incl taxes, it isn't ok!

Review 7:great location; lobby and dining room very trendy and well done; good breakfast; good bed.

Review 8:As it is a conversted motel the rooms are smaller but well appointed. No elevator but staff will assist with luggage

Review 9:Central downtown location so you can walk everywhere, friendly staff, excellent breakfast included as well as wine reception.

Review 10:Terrific staff who were invested in ensuring we had everything we wanted. Breakfast was quick and easy...but still a good selection. Overall, really happy.

Review 11:Small rooms. Portable air conditioning in room was noisy and when you changed channels on the tv it was the same frequency as the ac and adjusted the ac temperature.

Review 12:Location, free parking and wifi. Happy Hour from 5-6 with complimentary local beers and wine. Good buffet selection.

Review 13:Clean, spacious rooms. Great location. Walking distance from all the major spots and restaurants in Charlottetown. Friendly and helpful staff. Very thoughtful service!

Review 14:I would have liked more variety at breakfast but the selections they did have were very high quality so all in all very good for a continental breakfast.

Review 15:Very very clean hotel, immaculate and not musty at all like other places I have been on the island which is expected really. Perfect location, really lovely area. Walking distance to so many things.

Review 16:The design of the property means some of the rooms have outside access. Ours was an inside room, but it was located on the second floor, which meant climbing a few flights of stairs as there is no elevator. Not an issue for us, but it could be for others. There didn't seem to be sufficient parking for all the guests. If you arrive back at your room late in the evening, don't expect to get a good parking spot. We ended up parking in the driveway. There is no view to speak of, from any of the rooms. You're either looking at the parking lot, the back of houses next door, or the brick wall in the alley. I found the rooms to be overpriced for the value provided. Our bathroom was tiny - definitely meant for only one person at a time! The air conditioner was a portable machine that was extremely loud. We had to turn it off to watch TV. The bed was OK, although the pillows aren't the greatest. Hair dryer provided was very cheap, although it still does the job. The Greener is Cleaner program isn't quite as good a deal as it seems - the $10 restaurant vouchers are useable only one at a time and expire the next day. Breakfast is OK, but nothing special - mostly bread products, with two egg selections. Make sure to get there early for any kind of selection.

Review 17:The hotel is cute and quiet, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Everything is very clean and nicely decorated. A nice assortment of bath products are provided, and the addition of wine glasses in each room is a nice touch. The iPhone-compatible alarm is nice (old-style connector). The hotel is only a block from downtown, so it's very convenient to walk pretty much everywhere.

Review 18:The room smelled a little musty - we had a King bedroom and the size of the washroom was comparatively rather small.

Review 19:The location is excellent and people are friendly!! Breakfast was nice with a variety of pastries (but no hot proteins on the breakfast menu).

Review 20:I didn't like that the smoking area was right outside the entrance door which we had to use for our selected room. If the door was left open, the smoke could be smelled in the hallway plus it just meant we had to walk through a crowd of smokers to get to our room. That was the only negative of this property.

Review 21:I liked the freshness of the rooms, linens, service and location. We would recommend it and stay there ourselves again.

Review 22:Our room had a strange odor. Front desk sent house keeping in and they sprayed an air freshener that didn't do much. We walked to the local pharmacy and bought a plug-in air freshener that took care of the odor during our 4 day stay.

Review 23:n/a

Review 24:Just everything! This accommodation crowned the entire trip! Staff is extremely pleasant, knowledgeable about the area, and offered many perks related to tourism attractions; hotel has a green program and cooperation with other local businesses; has other offers for the guests: complimentary cocktail evenings; brown bag for the trip; perfect breakfast choices; location is superb;

Review 25:There was no view from the room, and a restaurant was too small to accommodate all the guests during the breakfast time.

Review 26:A nice, big, comfortable room, and many options for a healthy breakfast. The staff was very helpful providing a storage for our bicycles, and suggesting a good restaurant.

Review 27:Your parking lot is not very accomodating and creepy if you have to park out back especially when we were told the back door to the hotel wasn't working

Review 28:Wifi was broken second day,

Review 29:Hotel was conviently placed in the heart of downtown, the staff were very helpful in anything I needed, especially when I checked in, very nice rooms, well decorated hotel had a very modern feel

Review 30:Stairs!!!!! I have a bad knee! Room was small and beds crowded. Not enough towels and facecloths and they didn't have any til morning so they sent up freshly laundered green cloths(cleaning cloths?). Yuck! There was a hit in the shower when I got in...black and we are all blondes.

Review 31:Staff were excellent

Review 32:It said suites. The room was no suite. It was small only a double bed and no fridge.

Review 33:The location was great. You can walk to shops and the ocean. Clean

Review 34:Due to the unexpected heat, we had a floor a/c unit, which was loud.

Review 35:It was quiet. Small but clean room, laundry on site. Lovely staff, helpful and engaged. Great location, free parking.

Review 36:Not much to say here, maybe they could use some more hot options at breakfast (only had 1 each morning) but that's about it.

Review 37:Great location downtown Charlottetown, very friendly staff. Room was clean and comfortable.

Review 38:Amazing staff, amazing service, amazing location! I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. It was obvious that the staff care about their guests and their experience in Charlottetown.

Review 39:We loved this place. The biggest thing was that all the staff were so pleasant. They were friendly and helpful. Our stay was for 3 nights. We had a double bed, which was quite comfortable. The room, although not huge had two comfortable chairs. The wifi worked well and was quick. Breakfast was good and included fresh fruit, breads, hot and cold cereals, and a main dish, such as frittata or waffles. They also had a portable breakfast if you were on the go. There were complimentary newspapers and at 5 o'clock complimentary drinks were served. Drink time and breakfast gave you an opportunity to talk to other guests, although you could enjoy either quietly alone if you chose. The hotel was an easy walk to theatres, the waterfront, restaurants, historical and other attractions. The hotel was clean and quiet.

Review 40:There were a few homeless or "street" people lingering around my vehicle in the parking lot and shouting indecent "street talk" to us as we were unloading our luggage at night. It made us slightly uncomfortable but I guess that type of stuff may come with staying in the downtown core of a city.

Review 41:The close location to Queen Street and all of the action! The bed was extremely comfortable and the breakfast was very nice! An older motel but very modern renovations - would come back again!

Review 42:The only con was that there was no elevator for the second floor. However the staff offered to help with luggage.

Review 43:The staff was very very friendly and helpful.

Review 44:There was a coffee maker and mirror outside the bathroom but no plug receptacle to plug anything, including the coffee maker, into. The lamp beside the bed also wouldn't work as clock plugged in. Place needs more plugs.

Review 45:Very good location and comfortable room.

Review 46:The portable air conditioner, though operating properly, was too noisy for me to sleep well but I had to keep it going to prevent room from becoming too warm; same problem I would have at home. A future hotel reno should address this issue. Not sure if each room had same type of AC unit.

Review 47:Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Nice to have fresh cookies shortly after arrival. Cleanliness of room, as stated above. Quiet location.

Review 48:We loved our stay at Hotel on Pownal! From the warm welcome and complimentary drinks in the lobby upon arrival, to the wonderful buffet breakfast in the morning, everything was very nice. We enjoyed the location, parking, comfy bed, great bath tub, and coffee in the room.

Review 49:I do not like duvets on beds as the weather gets warmer. Too hot!! But the linen was crisp and clean and the bed was comfortable otherwise

Review 50:Great location...a small park nearby as well as being 2 blocks from the centre of Charlottetown. The staff were, without exception, welcoming and helpful and the complimentary drink before dinner was a nice touch

Review 51:Not a lot of parking, and rather modest views...

Review 52:Nicely appointed little room with quick wi-fi. Shower is very nice, and bed very comfortable. One block from Queen Street, and easy waling for shops and restaurants

Review 53:The location of the hotel was only a 5 minute walk to downtown, but in a very quiet area of town. The reception area was lovely, I enjoyed a glass of wine and read for an hour. The staff were very friendly, warm & welcoming.

Review 54:We liked the front desk staff because they were exceptionally welcoming, helpful, and gracious. Breakfast was delicious, especially the fresh baked goods.

Review 55:The fitness room might be newly built because I can smell it.

Review 56:There was kind of custom appreciation week when I was living there. The hotel offered free wine/beer/snacks. And I liked the cozy decoration there!

Review 57:there were no facilities also they switched off the ACs for the whole building to save energy because it was snowing. Well, as the building is heated up, you will be having 2 options. Either you close the window and start sweating or open the window and get all the snow weather inside your room. Also there were no varieties for the breakfast.

Review 58:excellent location and the staff were amazing .. very helpful

Review 59:No way to control the volume on the iPod dock. No-one at the desk had a clue but said they'd sent up a maid, who never materialized. There were noisy guests both nights, who didn't get kicked out until 3am on night #2.

Review 60:Terrific free breakfast with hot items, including GF options. Small but clean and comfortable room with quality bedding. Solid value for the money. Downtown location ideal for walking. Park early and leave your car there, as spaces are limited.

Review 61:Portable AC unit in the living area made me feel a little wasteful. We only needed to cool our bedroom a bit but ended up cooling the entire suite for the night. Besides that no complaints.

Review 62:Renos to this hotel were really well done. Staff was beyond helpful and always pleasant to deal with. On arrival we were offered a glass of local beer, very nice touch. I'm picky about cleanliness and our room was very clean and comfortable, even clean grout in the tub! Suite also had a little kitchenette which one of the attendants told me was to make you feel as close to home as possible, very kind. Aveda bath products were a nice touch. Breakfast was included and had many hot items like pancakes, eggs and hot cereal. My husband and I were both beyond happy with our stay. Compared to other more expensive hotels in the area we looked at I would choose Pownal again and recommend it with no hesitation.

Review 63:I loved the fact that they give you a dining coupon for going green and not having housekeeping everyday. Also appreciated free parking. Lovely staff, especially the breakfast head gal. Super!

Review 64:minor point, but I couldnt find the ice machine but that was ok as ice machines have a poor reputation at hotels in general

Review 65:We came to town to go to the theater and the location was great. The room was clean and comfortable. It was nice to be able to walk around and not have to drive about.

Review 66:Parking security was not sufficient.

Review 67:Very clean and well looked after. Breakfast staff was excellent, and kept the food well stocked and everything was clean and appealing

Review 68:I can't think of one thing that I didn't like. Perhaps a few small patio chairs on the upper deck for the outside rooms might be nice if you wanted to sit up there.

Review 69:I cannot say enough good things about this hotel! The staff are extremely warm, friendly and professional. The location is excellent. Walking diststance to all the downtown restaurants. The free breakfast is not just continental , it has a huge variety of foods and has great presentation. The modern rooms have comfortable beds. The wine and beer happy hour, a bonus which adds a nice touch.

Review 70:Room was musty when air conditioning was turned off/ turned off as it was too cold and couldn't easily regulate it. Dining area for breakfast period was busy - no table space available - had to sit in the common area seating - ok if you're just having coffee. Though gluten free option was available for a breakfast item - it was only a sugary cereal - nothing I could eat. That was a bit disappointing but the coffee was good.

Review 71:Location Welcoming friendly helpful staff and lovely spacious common area - coffee/tea always available Comfortable seating areas - options for alone time or group conversation Breakfast included in price of the room. Good quality tasting coffee. There was a complementary wine reception for guests - I think 5-6 pm - unfortunately I couldn't attend as I had made reservations for dinner elsewhere and was preparing for that.

Review 72:Every member of the staff we interacted with was helpful and genuinely friendly. The little extra touches, such as the complimentary beverage service in the lobby and the umbrellas near the door, were really great.

Review 73:We think that their small parking area leaves a lot to be desired, but is not a deterant for our business.

Review 74:The most important detail for us was the remarkable friendly and helpful employees. Also, their continental breakfast and great atmosphere was very pleasant.

Review 75:I found the hotel on a dark street and not easy to see in the dark. Leaving the theater at night and walking on the street it was not well lit. The hotel should have more lights in front of it or signs close by so it can be easily found at night while walking.

Review 76:location ease to get to hotel and friendly staff.

Review 77:Bathroom was clean but very small and could use an update; tiny toilet and not much counter space for leaving toiletries; The room did not have very good lighting, and curtains had to be pulled all the time for privacy as there was foot traffic outside windows facing parking lot

Review 78:Excellent Location Room was clean Very comfortable bed Efficient staff Good quality wi-fi Good quality Aveda bath products

Review 79:I wish the breakfast had more variety rather than mostly baked goods. Also, no elevator.

Review 80:The rooms were comfortable and clean. I like that there was continental breakfast included. When we asked for toothbrushes, the front desk was very willing to give us some (and extras!). It looked like there were many facilities that could have been used, but I didn't stay long enough to try them out.

Review 81:There are no elevators and we were on the third level but the staff offered and carried our bags cheerfully.

Review 82:Excellent location, close to Confederation Centre. Great continental breakfast, providing both hot and cold items. Also offered a breakfast in a bag for those on the go before breakfast opened. Staff very friendly and check in and out was efficient. Staff helpful providing mPs and directions also.

Review 83:This hotel had lots of little extras that made our stay a pleasure. The free wi-fi was fast and reliable and there was lots of choice at breakfast, The hotel's atmosphere was great, the staff were very friendly and professional, the hotel is extremely clean, with comfy beds, very quiet rooms. The downtown location was also a bonus - within easy walking distance of the waterfront, Victoria Row, the Confederation Centre, etc.

Review 84:My husband and I were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and we're VERY pleased with our three night stay at Hotel on Pownal. The food was delicious, rooms were spacious and clean, and staff was very friendly. We will be returning to this hotel. Thank you!

Review 85:They should definitely invest in a few new toasters! It took a REALLY long time to toast my bagel every morning at breakfast with temp. at max. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Review 86:I enjoyed this hotel, great location. Fresh baked cookie's were delicious.

Review 87:price not good match with room. If I had known the poor quality of room for the price I would have stayed somewhere else for the same price. Pictures on internet made it appear very nice but not as nice when actually there to stay. I had to park at the back near the garbage bin as limited parking. It looked like I parked right in front of someone's private residence. When I came out in the morning to leave they had their front door open because it was hot but I felt very uncomfortable with the thought of being able to look right into their residence. Rooms had a distant odor I assumed was from air conditioner although they did offer excellent customer service to find us a room that smelled less. When I first checked in their was a young lady on the desk who did not practice the same customer service as we received later with the room odor. She made me feel like it was inconvenient for her to show me how to get to the mall.

Review 88:close to downtown quiet customer service was excellent excellent breakfast

Review 89:stay was too short

Review 90:staff was amazing. Front staff explained many sight seeing locations, restaurants etc.Have difficulty walking. convenient beautiful room, extra assistance supplies to take shower comfortably. good breakfast. easy parking on site. Good location for walk to downtown and attractions

Review 91:The wooden furniture (desk, tables) are beginning to show wear.

Review 92:The location was great as was the complimentary breakfast and the breakfast to go. The room (suite) as well as the hotel lobby and breakfast areas were very clean and comfortable. Also liked the Aveda bath products. We were impressed and will look to stay there again on our next trip to the island.

Review 93:The clean, comfortable beds. Breakfast ease if checking in/out
