Reviews for Altkölnischer Hof

Review 1:Just a few, very minor negatives: (1) simple furniture with limited storage; & (2) limited shelf space in the bathroom to place items

Review 2:First of all, Bacharach is THE place to stay on the Rhine - tremendous little town with east access to everything between Bingen & Koblenz. The following plusses are especially noted: (1) location in center of town; (2) free parking just a short walk away; (3) very friendly staff with good English skills; (4) the complete atmosphere of being in such an old and historic building; (5) cleanliness; (6) great buffet breakfast; (7) the best restaurant in the town - reasonably priced with great choices including venison & wild boar; (8) completely quiet at night even though our room - Room 11 - faced the main intersection; (9) good, reasonably hard mattress on the beds and (10) only a short 1-1/2 hour drive from the Frankfurt Airport making it a great first stop after a long overnight flight - we were able to check in at 11:30 AM and get 5 hours of sleep before dinner.

Review 3:The whole town goes to bed pretty early. All the shops close early as well.

Review 4:The hotel sits right in the heart of town. It had a great breakfast and had a restaurant that served dinner as well.

Review 5:No hot water on our last morning..leaving early so not something that could be corrected immediately..things happen but our overall experience was very positive!

Review 6:Well equipped, spacious, new, comfortable and if we needed anything ,the owner responded immediately!

Review 7:Bathroom was small but had everything we needed. Most employees very friendly and accommodating, with the exception of one waitress.

Review 8:Bridal suite was spacious. Balcony was great with nice view. Small elevator to assist with our luggage. Nice, central location. Close to boats, restaurants and shops. Lovely, quaint little town on the Rhine.

Review 9:Credit card machine did not work, but they did agree to take down and charge later, so that was nice.

Review 10:Great spot! Get the honeymoon room! Beautiful little town.

Review 11:We had our own one bedroom apartment in the middle of town with a convenient parking place. We had to check out early because of a flight out of Frankfurt to the US. The staff was busy serving breakfast and couldn't help us so I left the room keys on the reception desk and left. They charged my credit card on file with the correct amount, so everything worked out.

Review 12:We spent two nights in an apartment. It was very clean and comfortable. We loved the in-town location and easy and free parking was a block away. We also ate at the restaurant one night which was very good as well.

Review 13:The unit was right in the middle of this wonderful little town. Very roomy with well equipped kitchen. Little supermarket just across the road. Cheap bike hire just up the road, lots of good bike trails along the Rhine. River cruise stop at your door. Great walking around the township also.

Review 14:We were very happy with the accommodation - one of the best in Germany - until we want to pay the bill. We were charged an extra 25 Euros as a "cleaning tax", which we had not been informed of. It put a sour taste in our mouths for what had been a wonderful stay.

Review 15:The apartment was very spacious and comfortable and the hotel itself, where we had breakfast, was delightful.

Review 16:Service is horrible. I walked in around dinner time asking to check in. The hotel is a hotel/restaurant. I was asked to "wait a moment", then a few more "wait a moment" while they are busy greeting and serving other restaurant guests who came after me. Finally, after 25 minutes ( I checked my watch), when she was able to help me, the phone rang. She picked up the phone and disappeared for another good 5 minutes. When she came back she asked me to upgrade the room at my cost since my reservation had 2 different room types for 2 days - but that was what available when I booked. I refused. They started to make unnecessary noise. The manager eventually came out. She, of course, honor my reservation.

Review 17:Excellent location. Bacharach Village is a small quaint, medieval town. Breakfast is very good. Room is clean as I expected. The building is old.

Review 18:We got last room which was bridal suite - so it was a bit expensive.

Review 19:Nice friendly family run place Good central location Parking good - although a few hundred metres from hotel. You can get a tag to drop stuff off outside hotel. Food very good.

Review 20:It wasn't the hotel's fault, but there was a heat wave when we visited and there is no airconditioning. We had to sleep with the windows opened and there is a train 1 block away. Reccomended earplugs.

Review 21:The staff was very friendly. The apartment had everything you could possibly need.

Review 22:My wife and I stayed five nights and all the breakfasts were excellent. We ate dinner in the restaurant twice. Our first dinners were very good. The second time, my meal was overcooked to the point that I literally could not put a fork in the piece of venison. To their credit, they did not question my returning the meal and promptly brought out my second selection. They also provided free after dinner drinks in recognition of the one poor meal.

Review 23:The room was very good size and included a large, private balcony.

Review 24:Nothing to prepare coffee or tea in the room, 3,5 Euro for a small bottle of water is expensive.

Review 25:The breakfast, the decoration in the restaurant, the hotel building, the village, close to the river port.

Review 26:Nothing to dislike!

Review 27:A Quaint Hotel, in a lovely Little town. Loved walking To the Castle on the hill, and Thru the vineyards. The breakfast Was very good, and the staff Helpful.

Review 28:Noise of trains through the night, and very early morning (5.30am) delivery to supermarket. The noise of a trolley on cobbles went on for 30 minutes.

Review 29:Large, spacious and comfortable apartment with all the ameneties right in the centre of Bacharach.

Review 30:Just be aware that you will need to carry your luggage up the stairs to your room.

Review 31:Located in the centre of town. Breakfast was a buffet with many different choices.

Review 32:Nothing.

Review 33:The hotel was in a great location. We had two rooms with a balcony overlooking the main street. The restaurant at the hotel was wonderful and we especially appreciated how accommodating and inviting they were - making chicken nuggets especially for our children. We appreciated the thoughtfulness.

Review 34:Great location on one of the main squares. Try and get a room with a bacony over the square if you can, it was lovely to sit out there with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. Breakfast was very good.

Review 35:I was not able to get my cell phone to work for internet or make calls but the owner let me use his computer for the internet which was fine and great that he did that!

Review 36:Everyone was friendly, spoke english, and willing to help in any way they could. The place is clean and nice. They let me use their computer when my WiFi didn't work on my phone. It was perfect!

Review 37:Wifi did not work in room. Car park not on site but free.

Review 38:Characterful old building close to The Rhine but away from noisy riverfront trains. Helpful staff.

Review 39:A little expensive, but the accommodations were very nice.

Review 40:Amazing room, w/ balcony, that overlooks a quaint main street. The room was quaint, clean and spacious.

Review 41:We had 2 adults and a 17 year old daughter. We all had the following sentiments: enjoyed the hotel, the room was clean, was a very charming area, the hotel staff was great. Would return again if we could.

Review 42:Everything was perfect!

Review 43:It was a very charming place to stay. The host/owner was very gracious in helping with any needs. An excellent time!! I want to come back!!

Review 44:We were looking forward to enjoy the Guide Michelin listed restaurant of the hotel. Unfortunately we visited this place on the they kitchen closing day (Ruhetag). Hotel webpage should include information about weekly Ruhetag

Review 45:Very charming historical building. The hall used as restaurant and breakfast room is really charming and beautiful

Review 46:Nothing!

Review 47:Great location, very well set up triple room with the bathroom between two bedrooms. Both rooms had TVs, which was nice for my son. Restaurant was excellent as well!

Review 48:Good location in the middle of the beautiful old town and a few minutes walk to the Rhine. Very pretty hotel with traditional furnishings. We had the bridal room with a four poster bed and huge balcony - very special.

Review 49:The lady who booked us in was not very helpful or polite regarding car parking facilities. Waste from the room and bathroom not collected regularly.

Review 50:The lady who served at breakfast was very welcoming and helpful

Review 51:We stayed in one of the apartments and it was perfect for our family of 5. There was a large family room where our baby could crawl, and a full kitchen. The only things that would have made the stay better, and encourage us to go back for a longer stay, would be access to a washer/dryer and coffee already in the kitchen.

Review 52:We enjoyed the accommodations and dining in a very German atmosphere. Bacharach is a charming little town on the less touristy west bank of the Rhine. Our hostess and her husband were very helpful. They went out of their way to keep the light on for us when our arrival was delayed until late evening due to airplane problems. They made us feel right at home during our stay. We can recommend their hotel highly.

Review 53:A little Noisy with Windows on the side road that leads to the upper vineyards. Ask for a room that does not face the church. Back rooms are very quiet.

Review 54:A Grand and beautiful timbered hotel. Wonderful friendly and helpful staff. The owner lent us bikes and peddled away to fill up tires and bring back a third bike,

Review 55:German old style hospitality in a beautiful town. Great breakfast and helpful staff. Wifi reasonable. Early checkin was great after long international flight. Balcony room was great.

Review 56:No negative points.

Review 57:Friendly and helpful staff and excellent accommodation in the apartment with parking outside. Roomy, well laid out and fully kitted. Very quiet too.

Review 58:This quintessential hotel was the perfect place to begin our Rhein River experience. Our room with balcony was nice. The best features of this hotel are its great staff and wonderful restaurant... we had one of our best dinners here and enjoyed breakfast each day.

Review 59:We didn't have any toiletries.

Review 60:We had a suite down the street from the main hotel/restaurant, and it was large and comfortable. Great location in the middle of old town. Very good WIFI. Good breakfast.

Review 61:The first morning at breakfast the waitress insisted our party sit at a table near the buffet that had us out in the isle so people had to squeeze to get by, instead of at the nice 6 top we asked for.... 2 of us decided to get another table out of the line of traffic and I guess it made her mad because she refused to bring us our own pot of coffee and made us continue to go back to the other table to get refills!!! The second day she immediately sat us at the nice 6 top we had wanted the day before and seemed to be trying to be nice so we ended up having a nice breakfast. Other than the bad experience the first morning, I would say the breakfast there was one of the best we had in the 7 hotels we stayed at during our trip. Excellent Bread :)

Review 62:This hotel is really beautiful and charming from the outside but sadly our rooms were in another building down the street.... I didn't really get a "feel" for the hotel.

Review 63:We stayed at the hotel for three nights in June 2015. Reserved the room on line and decided to stay an extra night which they changed for us with no problems via e-mail. Very prompt when asking questions on line as well. The room and bathroom were nice sized and no problems were found. Breakfast was fantastic and the lady who served the coffee was polite and very friendly. Large assortment of bread, fruit, cheese, meat, eggs and bacon with three different juices. Dinner was wonderful and the waitresses were more than accommodating. We had the Apple Strudel with Ice Cream to finish the meal off and it was wonderful as well. Upon arrival, the staff member took us to the elevator and assisted us with any information. I'll be staying the next time we come to Bacharach!!! We didn't use the WiFi or the TV in the room or the area.

Review 64:nothing

Review 65:gorgeous small town, we stayed in a separate apartment as all rooms were booked. It was very spacious, great kitchen, lounge and comfy bed. We could see a castle from our bedroom window. We walked from the train station, small supermarket across from apartment. We ate dinner one night in the restaurant and it was great. Very nice family run business. Loved our stay we even stayed an extra night.

Review 66:Most of the staff were very pleasant, however one female seemed to be looking to argue, when merely asking about the local area, somewhat off putting, however we still enjoyed our stay.

Review 67:The town was very nice, a bit like being on the film set for Gulliver's Travels. We decided to opt for a half board option which gave us excellent food at a very good price. A different hotel from the usual modern buildings (lovely carved wood etc).

Review 68:We were told you could only wine taste in the area, unless you tasted at one of the wine shops in town, with a group. However, once we traveled to the other side of the Rhine and found the Rheinsteig Trail we found 100's of wineries to stop in and taste at will.

Review 69:Loved the quiet little town of Bacharach. The quintessential medieval village. Located central Rhine, was a great take off point for many day trips.

Review 70:Very spacious apartment, clean, center of town, breakfast was wonderful, plenty of variety, owner was extremly helpful. Just a wonderful experience. Hotel restaurant has excellent food.

Review 71:Our room #7 was up a spiral staircase, not accommodated by the elevator. The owners were preoccupied with entertaining guests and seemed to be too busy for their customers.

Review 72:We enjoyed the comfort of our room. There was a large luggage bench, 2 chairs and a table, safe, minibar in our room with windows overlooking the street. Our bathroom had a towel warmer, large fluffy towels. The included breakfast had a wonderful choice, including delicious scrambled eggs & bacon. The dinning room was in a beautiful historic room.

Review 73:Although the bathroom was large, the shower was very small. Shampoo and soap was not provided, we had to ask for it. Even though it was stated that housecleaning was a separate charge, it would have been good for someone to just empty the trash each day and make sure that paper products were available.

Review 74:The apartment was spacious and clean. It had all the utensils, and dinnerware that anyone would need for cooking in the apartment. It was comfortable (except for the hard bed, which seems to be common in Europe). The owners were very nice and helpful when we interacted with them.

Review 75:The staff seemed annoyed by tourists. There was no real sense that they were glad you were staying there. That is not to say they were not cordial, they were.

Review 76:The hotel is right in the middle of Bacharach 10 min walk from the train station. The hotel has a lift, free wifi, a laundry service, good inclusive breakfast. The room was beautiful and had a balcony.

Review 77:great restaurant! The apartment we stayed in was nice size and would be great for someone needing more than a single room. The apartments are 2 minute walk from the main hotel. Not as charming but very functional and newly remodled.

Review 78:The hotel is in the middle of town so everything is within walking distance. Our room was lovely. We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant and it was delicious!

Review 79:Internet dropped out frequently whilst we were there.

Review 80:We stayed in one of the family rooms a couple of buildings away from the main hotel. We came here after being cramped into a studio apartment in Cologne and this was like a large palace in comparison. Beautiful old building in a beautiful old town, it felt like we were in a movie set.

Review 81:The apartment that we had was about a block from the hotel and it was wonderful. It was the best apartment that I have stayed in while vacationing in Europe. I didn't do any cooking, but the kitchen was well equipped. The bedroom had a king sized bed, and the bathroom was large. Everything was updated and looked fairly new. There is no elevator, and the steps are fairly steep, but well worth the climb to a spacious apartment!

Review 82:A goose perched on a high building woke up half the town at 6am. But no the hotel's fault

Review 83:Family owned and operated, so you get personal attention. In the middle of Bacharach. Bed was comfy. Room nice. Breakfast was first rate in a beautiful room.

Review 84:Nothing! If i will be the rine river, i will choose this hotel again.

Review 85:enough parking space. Good for children enough space room. Clean. Lovely staff all.

Review 86:Nothing was "Bad". However, I would suggest doing breakfast aka rate when only few guests are there in slow season or at least the eggs as they were cold when on buffet. No other complaints.

Review 87:The food was very very good at dinner as was the wine. We ate dinner there all 3 nights!

Review 88:The staff was friendly, the room was spotless and the meals were delicious. We had a balcony room on the top floor. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Review 89:Breakfast started at 8am.

Review 90:I loved the location of this historical family run hotel. Its in the middle of the town and a 8 minute walk from the train station.

Review 91:We were in awe of the beauty of this historic hotel! The fantastic family & staff provide genuine warmth & hospitality! The cuisine is amazing & served in 5 star fashion!

Review 92:The appartement we stayed in was situated approximately 80-100 m from the hotel itself but still at a very central place just in front of a small grocery shop. Everything was clean, no disturbing noise, a number of good restaurants in the very proximity, simply a great place to spend your holidays. I especially appreciated flexibility of the hotel staff that was always ready to help and advise.

Review 93:the location was superb and the hotel was entirely lovely and clean clean clean! A traditional European breakfast overlooking the window boxes filled with spring flowers was so enjoyable. They even provide a place to park nearby with your room. I'd return to Bacharach and this hotel again and recommend it to any american who wishes a genuine and delightful German experiance.

Review 94:Nothing really. Wish we could see the river from the balcony

Review 95:We booked the balcony room. The room was in a reasonable size by the European standards. Very comfortable bed and bedding. The balcony was worthwhile. Good location on the main Steet - although it's not on the river nor you can see river, at least not from the 2nd floor. It's a small town so it's close to everything.

Review 96:Everyone at the hotel was great! Loved the quaint location. We had dinner two evenings at the hotel restaurant, the food and wine were excellent! We slept well and really were not bothered by any train noise.

Review 97:Shower was tiny and not tub, but it did have an adjustable shower head to accomodate tall or short guests and plenty of hot water.

Review 98:Location was excellent, restaurant was excellent. Wifi was a little slow in room, but it did work. Must get a balcony room.

Review 99:this hotel is un a prime location right at the heart if Bacharach and the staff do there very best to ensure your needs are catered for. Great location for touring the Rhineland only a short hop from the airport by car and good parking facilities.

Review 100:The hotel is very old and while this is part of its charm, creaking floors can wake you if you are a light sleeper.

Review 101:Super breakfast. Excellent service at reception and location is perfect for sightseeing in this medieval town and for a cruise along the scenic Rhine.

Review 102:For Bike Rentals... Check out the bike you rent before you pick it up. We had less than quality bikes. Just saying!!! Good price, friendly fellow, but the 30 mile ride was not as easy as it could have been. It was still an amazing day! We loved everything about the hotel!

Review 103:The Altkolnisdher Hoff was our favorite stop in Germany! The staff and location were excellent. Very Clean! We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite. We upgraded when we got there because we wanted the balcony and it was worth it! We rode bikes down the Rhine River Valley and took the boat back to Bacharach. We hope to come back and will stay here for sure!

Review 104:We paid for a deluxe room that was supposed to have extra room. The room was small. Not deluxe at all.

Review 105:The location was excellent for hopping on a boat or renting a bike. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 106:Nothing really

Review 107:Location in the middle of Bacharach, 2 minutes from the river Beautiful old-times decor in the facade and dining room Private parking nearby Warm welcome and service Excellent breakfast and restaurant

Review 108:We stayed for 1 night only, but wish it could have been for more. The room was nicely furnished and the bathroom although very small made good use of the limited space. It was so cheery with the fluffy yellow towels, etc.The beds were comfortable and the room was very clean. We had a lovely balcony, which is quite unique, overlooking the cobbled street of the Old Town. The hotel is only a short walk to the Rhine where you can get a ferry to visit / travel to the other towns along the Rhine The breakfast was excellent with a good choice was the staff were friendly and helpful . The private parking is nearby and as in other reviews check in first and park later. As we had already eaten before we arrived we did not have an evening meal at the restaurant. We would definitely stay there again and we would have an evening meal next time.

Review 109:The restaurant was great; we ate there both nights we were there and loved the food. The room was comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 110:The beds were hard and uncomfortable. We asked for a room near the elevator, but the elevator did not go to our floor. The stairs had small steps for people with small feet, and the stairway area was pretty dark. I have low vision and so I had to pay special attention when I went up and down the stairs.

Review 111:Hotel staff were very helpful, they helped us with our luggage. Breakfast buffet was very good. The hotel was in the center of town and next door to a souvenir shop and close to restaurants and shops and the KD boat dock. We enjoyed the boat cruise to St. Goar. We had a delicious pastry in St. Goar and took the tram to the castle.

Review 112:Wait staff in the restaurant were a bit surly.

Review 113:Location was perfect for touring the Rhine and Mosel River valleys. Have the rouladen in the restaurant! Breakfast was all we could hope for.

Review 114:the bathroom light was very bright and there was no night light so when you turned it on, the whole room gets lit up everything was great

Review 115:the balcony room view comfortable beds breakfast overall design in kitchen and rooms

Review 116:Nothing

Review 117:Chraracter of this hotel Location - right inthe centre of the town Bedrooms - well appointed and very comfortable Breakfast - good choice of items Definitely recommended

Review 118:We arrived on their "Ruhetag" which is basically their day off (had no idea at the time of booking). Thankfully, staff was actually around when we knocked on the main door (it was locked with a sign stating they were off on Mondays). We were able to get our key and leave our luggage in the lobby area since we were earlier than the check-in time. The problem we had related to when we returned to actually check in to our room. We went to our room. Our luggage had been put inside the room as we had anticipated. However, the beds were stripped from the previous guests (no bed linens of any sort), the bathroom had not been cleaned, there were no towels, etc. Basically, the housekeepers had 'started' turning over the room and never finished. However, now there was no staff on site to talk to about this. I called the reception phone line and it went to a voice mail. I left a message (wasn't sure if anyone would receive it). I was anticipating we'd have to just sleep on bare bed mattresses until the next day. About 30 mins. later, a loud banging on my door ensued. I went over to see who it was, but no one was there. Then the housekeeper came back, and I told her our room had not been cleaned. She looked at the other housekeeper in a rather annoyed manner, rather frustrated that she couldn't understand me b/c I apparently just spoke English. So, in my broken German I told her we had just arrived. She seemed surprised and ran off. A few minutes later she reappeared with the other housekeeper and frantically made our bed, gave the bathroom a wipe down and ran the vacuum through the room, all in about 5 minutes. She never apologized or really said anything to me. Fast forward to the day we were suppose to check out, I believe check out is at 11am if I recall. Nevertheless about an hour before checkout (so 10am), we were in our room finishing packing.

Review 119:Location was excellent. Bacharach is small, so it's probably hard to have a bad location, but this hotel is right in the middle of the town. Breakfast was very good (nice selection, hot and cold offerings).

Review 120:The bathroom was quite small but not really a problem - I think things like this are to be expected in traditional characterful accommodation.

Review 121:Central but quiet situation in small town of Bacharach - ideal for strolling by the Rhine or taking a river trip. Spacious covered balcony overlooking the cobbled street (ask for this when you book). Good traditional German food.

Review 122:Bathroom rather small and dark in the room that we used. No tea or coffee making facilities in your room.

Review 123:A lovely room, plenty of hanging space and hangers. Ironing board available. Very good choice at breakfast. Lovely staff in the dining room and very good food.

Review 124:Nothing at all!

Review 125:The old world charm of this hotel is stunning. The staff are very helpful and the food is amazing! It is a wonderful place to base yourself to explore the Rhine - we went by bike but there are plenty of hiking trails too.

Review 126:I requested a room on a low level or next to a lift 7 months before our visit but was given one with 8 steps to it, even though there were several rooms next to the lift. Parking is 150metres away They close on Mondays after breakfast but no-one mentioned our key fit one of the outside doors and we were left like idiots trying to get in after dinner.

Review 127:Its very old but manages to have good bathrooms. The minibar was useful and not excessively expensive. Breakfast, in with the price, had everything you could want, including some very crisp bacon and scrambled eggs, 7 kinds of meat, 5 cheeses, many yoghurts, fruit, jams and 8 types of bread. Coffee again a pot to be served in small cups but replenished when asked. Good location for boat trip, especially recommend Rhudesheim, and further afieldby train.Did not explore up the valley behind the village. several resturants available locally

The Fine Print

Please note the hotel restaurant is closed on Mondays. While apartment accommodation does not include daily cleaning, this can be booked extra for EUR 8 per day.
