Reviews for Hotel Gelber Hof
Review 1:Booking site clearly stated that credit cards were accepted but the proprietor became unfriendly and aggressive, demanding cash only (which we did not have) at the time of payment.
Review 2:Conveniently located right down town in charming Bacharach. They were happy to store and secure our luggage for the day after checkout while we went on a river excursion.
Review 3:Small room. With our two suitcases we had a tight spaces getting around the bed.
Review 4:Location was good for what we wanted to see along the Rhine. Good breakfast.
Review 5:The hotel had no charm or ambiance. Then at the desk was very rude. The lobby was dark and uncomfortable. While the rooms were clean, the felt institutional - like a sparse dormitory. To make it worse the town was delightful and there were charming inns on every corner.
Review 6:wifi did not work. parking is a bit over 2 blocks away. not an issue unless weather is bad, or you have a lack of baggage or health issues. appeared to only have 1 shower for many rooms, worse ratio than other inns i have stayed at. it didn't appear to be busy while i was hear so this was not an issue. breakfast not included.
Review 7:very quiet place. charming outside.
Review 8:I couldn't log onto the wifi, staff didn't have the best English, but my German isn't very good either.
Review 9:Good location, basic but done the job.
Review 10:Everything! Right in downtown, not too far from the train station, comfortable beds, a small bar at the ground level of the hotel, friendly staff, super clean!
Review 11:The Wi-Fi connection, which was available only in the reception area, did not allow connection with internet. The staff attempted unsuccessfully to remedy this. I went to a nearby café and used their Wi-Fi connection.
Review 12:Our tandem was kept in a safe place during our stay.
Review 13:We did not have any bad experiences while staying here.
Review 14:The staff was very helpful in that they allowed us to store our bags on-site for free after we had already checked out. This was a big relief because we packed a bit too much. In addition, it was reasonably priced.
Review 15:The only problem was that it was very hot in the room (there is, of coruse, no a/c), but when we opened the windows, we found out that our room faced the road, which was if not extremely busy, but still quite loud at times, even at night.
Review 16:Very nice hotel, located in the heart of charming Bacharach, with very friendly staff. The room was spacious and clean, breakfast buffet - plentiful and very fresh.
Review 17:Cluttered interiors. This place seems way past its prime. There was a strange smell in the hallway. Everything seemed out of fashion. Like something from the 50s.
Review 18:The hotel was in a great location and seemed pretty cool. Breakfast was standard but good.
Review 19:Getting locked out at night because they didn't give me a key. Not getting the room upgrade that was promised by Booking.com. Very uncomfortable bed.
Review 20:Nothing...
Review 21:The gentleman at the desk (I assume the proprietor) was not very friendly, and became visibly annoyed because I could not speak German when asking for directions as to where to park our car. My two sons actually attempted to ask some other questions about the area in German (they each had taken at least 5 years in high school/college), and he was even nastier to them. Sorry, but if you own a hotel in a town that caters to international tourists, you shouldn't be annoyed because they don't speak your language. Also, the hotel decor was older and run down (especially the bathroom, which did not have a hairdryer), but it was clean. I can't complain much for the price we paid, but we encountered much better value (and nicer staff) in other hotels during our trip.
Review 22:Location of the hotel on a main street near the center of town was great.
Review 23:Manager was rude as we left and insisted on cash payment (or the German EC card which as foreigners we didn't have) instead of the credit card the site says is acceptable. The site should state if this hotel doesn't accept credit cards - people can then be prepared. Street noise may be an issue for some.
Review 24:Good location in the centre of picturesque Bacharach. Walking distance to cafes and restaurants. No steep roads but it is opp a church and on a main street that goes up into the hills. This may bother someone who wants a quiet stay. The room was spacious and clean with everything we needed. The only staff we saw was a male manager who, on arrival, greeted us warmly and spoke English. He took my bike to the locked garage next door and then took my paniers up to the room. I was impressed with this and thanked him profusely. We declined breakfast when asked (we normally brunch somewhere unless breakfast is included). Next morning we went to pay and my companions offered a credit card. The manager was extremely rude and dismissive telling them to go next door to the Volksbank and get cash. He then refused any further engagement of conversation. Sad that this was the same helpful person we encountered on arrival. No idea why, but it soured what would otherwise have been a glowing reference for this hotel. He may have been having a bad day but this is not something paying guests should have to share in. Despite that, I would not discount this hotel as the location and value-for-money makes it attractive. Just be prepared to pay in cash.
Review 25:No credit card accepted even though not mentioning on the website.Parking is very far but website did not say that.A little misleading.
Review 26:Location,Breakfast
Review 27:There was a sign (sticker) on the frontdoor, that I can pay with masterCard but the owner said that I can pay only with German IC-card, It was noisy too.
Review 28:Location.
Review 29:I loved that there was an outdoor terrace attached to the room. Very cozy place. I would stay again (after I learn more German, the staff doesn't speak English, but they were very nice).
Review 30:Or room was adjacent to one of the main roads through town and was quite noisy into the night. The rooms were a bit dated, but this is an old place.
Review 31:Bacharach isn't very big, but the Hotel Gelber Hof is well-situated to get around town and access nearby hiking. One of our favorite things was the wonderful breakfast. Although we had some difficulty communicating with the staff (English to German), they were very friendly and helpful.
Review 32:How unfriendly the hotel manager is?! When we were going outside to take a walk after breakfast at about 9am, the manager ran to us and told that we had not paid the hotel fee!! You know, the check out time is at 12nn. After a walk, we checked out at 11am and paid the money. Since we had three baggage, my husband left first for his car. While I was waiting for his back, the management asked me to wait outside!!! I told him my husband would be coming back in two minutes (the parking slot we used was introduced by him, it was just 200 metres from the hotel!). The manager still asked me to wait outside because he was going out and to lock the door!!! Old fashion room with no facilities--- tv set in out-of-service mode, no hairdryer. Nothing extra they could offer!!!
Review 33:Breakfast
Review 34:The breakfast was great, but at 8 euros I thought it was a bit steep.
Review 35:Staff, location, price, cleanliness. The complimentary bottle of water was a nice touch.
Review 36:We tried to book for the next night and they were full....I should have booked for 2 nights..
Review 37:Very Friendly, clean rooms, the owner went out of his way to watch Fifa ladies soccer in the pub in on a larger TV and helped find bikes to rent.
Review 38:Common bathroom in nasty - luckly I was able to use barthroom i co-trawellers room. Bed and door were making terrible noises when moving. Noone cared about washing sink in the room for 4 days of my stay. Manager hardly speaks English.
Review 39:Very good location. Stuff was helpful (however did not speak much English). Some rooms are redecorated and look fine (however when you get room with possibility to have extra bed, then this bad is old and changes overall rating of the room).
Review 40:No complaints - the decor is arguably very dated, albeit spotlessly clean. In general everything was super. We really enjoyed our stay and it was amazing value for money.
Review 41:Alexander runs a fantastic hotel in the middle of beautiful Bacharach - well organised, centrally located and during the evening we enjoyed a fantastically welcoming and atmospheric bar. While we were there, our host even lit the fire which only added to the convivial, friendly atmosphere.
Review 42:Staff was really friendly and helpful. Amenities were great too. It was our first night in Germany coming from the USA and it was perfect for that. The late check out at noon was really nice to allow us time to be slow in the first morning there as we adjusted. We didn't take advantage of breakfast because of this but we did use the free wifi. We would stay again in another visit.
Review 43:The town is very cute and quaint. Hotel was in a great location and the staff was exceptionally accommodating. Fun and cute tavern bar downstairs. The excellent service made up for the outdated decor and facility.
Review 44:Feels a little bit cold in the room
Review 45:It was the first night since we arrived at Germany. The place is in great location and is accomodating. The host is very friendly and helpful. The price was very reasonable. In general, it's a wonderful experience living here.
Review 46:The room was perfect for our needs and the staff went above and beyond our expectations to make our stay a great experience. They even served us an early breakfast on the third day so we could get an early start to catch our flight home.
Review 47:Friendly Staff in the hotel Hotel Room was very clean Good Breakfast Good Location Reception staffs were very helpful all the time and were very kind, easy going, helpful to guests. Nice wine house nearby hotel Parking close to the hotel
Review 48:The location is excellent. The city itself is small but beautiful, and it is very easy to travel around the valley from there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. In particular, they told us not to worry about the 1pm checkout deadline. The stay was very good value for the money.
Review 49:Our room was large and clean. The breakfast included a variety of meats, cheeses, fruit, and bread, among other things. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is 5 minute walk from the parking lot and to restaurants. A great place to stay.
Review 50:A bit old and run down building, but OK for the price.
Review 51:Excellent location in the centre of Bacharach, nice personal, good breakfast, and excellent price quality ratio.
Review 52:- The bathroom is old and doesn't have much water pressure. (but clean!) - The car must be parked at the parking lot outside the centre (about 10 min. walk) - Wifi only at the reception. The room had really poor connection.
Review 53:- We arrived at Christmas night and even it was quiet in the hotel, the staff gave us a warm welcome. - The breakfast is good value. Bread, yogurt, different cheese, meat, eggs and chocolate for the bread. There was even fruit to choose from! - As a welcome we got free chocolate and fruits in the room. - The room was really clean and had a balcony with a relax chair. (didn't use of the cold weather)
Review 54:The owners weren't even at the hotel when I arrived I ended up having to leave and go stay in a different city completely. When I finally had wifi I had an email from them saying they'd overbooked so I couldn't stay there. Not useful at all considering I wouldn't get the email. Terrible service.
Review 55:Michael and Cristina were amazing! We are on our honeymoon and Bacharach is such a sweet town. What made the stay much better was the managers of the place. However we hear they are moving to the Mosel valley early next year. We would only stay again because of these lovely people but once they are gone we might question if we'd stay again. Thanks Michael!
Review 56:carpet torn and patched, halls poorly lit, furniture old and worn
Review 57:Clean but tired old hotel. Needs some major updating to bring it up to most current standards. Great walk to a castle ruin behind the hotel.
Review 58:Toilets/washroom were not clean this is not for the hotel, but view of the rhine from bacharach is not great, so next time i would prefer to stay in some other village
Review 59:good place to stay, very good location
Review 60:Nothing to complain
Review 61:This hotel located along the Rhein with a lot of old castles,it is quite beautiful in the night, and the servers there are both nice people.
Review 62:The WI-FI was only accessible in the lobby, but was not that inconvenient.
Review 63:This hidden gem was just off the main street. Although the free overnight parking was about 300 meters away, it was possible to unload and load in front of the hotel. Excellent breakfast.
Review 64:We were sorry to leave when our holiday time was up.
Review 65:We found the managers and staff of this family-run hotel to be warm and helpful. The location is ideal - close to the hiking trails to the castle, chapel ruins, vineyards, river, restaurants and shops. Our room and bath was spacious and airy and had a lovely view. Breakfast is excellent for a reasonable charge.
Review 66:The hotel is in need of a major facelift. It is very shabby in the corridors and the rooms are below standard. Parking is several blocks away and not free as advertised.
Review 67:The location in the old town was close to several interesting places and good places to eat.
Review 68:This hotel needs a face-lift! The rooms are cramped and the bathroomsare worse. The furnishings are long past being comfortable orattractive, beds uncomfortable. This is an inexpensive hotel but westayed in others, paid only a few euros more and enjoyed far superiorfacilities. This hotel might be ok if you are back-packing,on a biketour, or perhaps are traveling with children.
Review 69:Nice location in a pleasant town. Staff were friendly, the rooms cleanfor the most part & the breakfast fairly good.
Review 70:Facilities were a bit run down but everything was very functional.
Review 71:We caught the boat from St. Goar to Bacharach with our bicycles and this hotel had a spot for our bikes in a shed. Very friendly staff. Great location just north of the main street. Reasonably priced.
Review 72:Our time was too short! Give it at least 3 days. . .
Review 73:Location! A three minute walk from the Rhine, and a boat-stop. Fabulous little village with interesting Gothic architecture and history--we talked to an elderly woman who shared vivid memories of life during the 3rd Reich in little Bacharch.
Review 74:It would have been hard to drag our bags uphill to the hotel. We were picked up so that was perfect. The room was dated but neat and clean
Review 75:Friendly staff picked us up at the airport. The room was small but enough for us. Bed a little hard for me but it was only one night. I'd stay here again because of the location and staff.
Review 76:We were more than surprised by this place given the number of poor reviews. It's worth the price and then some.
Review 77:The location is so convenient to either the train or in our case, the waterfront from a ferry. A nice 5 min walk up the cobbled stone streets and you are greeted by a nice lobby. All the staff was great to work with. The common area in the floors is dated bu the rooms were nicely refinished. Our room had a nice deck complete with a sunning bed that looked up at a nearby castle. The breakfast we amazing! Great value. The clock in the bar runs backwards which somehow, worked for us. The bar btw, was a nice place to hang out after all the sites from the towns. We would encourage anyone traveling to take the KD ferry - awesome sites from the water.
Review 78:Room and bathroom were a little tired. No air conditioning. Parking difficult.
Review 79:Great location in the centre of this medieval town. Friendly and helpful staff. Great breakfast buffet and reasonable room for a sensible price.
Review 80:I must say that the owner of this hotel wants to earn as much money with the least amount of costs! The price is cheap but that's the only positive thing; the room dates from the 1950's and have not been updated ever since. The springs in the bed I still feel in my back. The shower goes from cold to ice cold. The walls are thin as paper. The plumbing of other rooms make a lot of noise in our room?! There's only wifi at the reception. There were blood stains on our sheets. Breakfast was poor.
Review 81:Friendly staff. Please spend 10 euro more on a decent hotel in the area, because it's not worth staying here in such a beautiful village in such a beautiful area! It really gives an anticlimax on your stay.
Review 82:The room had cobwebs with large spiders. The ceiling was high but cleaning should have been more thorough. The showeroom was dated and looked grubby as tiles needed regrouting. Parking is some distance from the hotel and might be problematic for some travellers.
Review 83:The staff were very attentive and friendly. The beds were comfortable. The hotel is situated in a very picturesque town close to the main street and a range of restaurants.
Review 84:Public areas were clean but very dated and rundown. Shower didn't work properly. Bed was uncomfortable.
Review 85:Good location. Friendly and helpful staff. Reasonable price.
Review 86:Great location, walking distance to everything, very helpful staff and tentative to our needs. Ohhhh and the Continental breakfast in the mornings was Amazing!!!
Review 87:The water in shower was a bit too cold for me (i like very hot shower),other than that, everything is perfect.
Review 88:Staff are so nice and friendly. The room is clean. You can walk to the only supermarket in the town within two minutes. There are many restaurants nearby as well.
Review 89:Customer service, location and the overall experience.
Review 90:Michael the gm was truly helpful with restaurant recomendations and muchmore. He is a very welcoming and nice person. He sent someone to pick usup from the train station. The day we left he sent some breakfast in abag for us to have on the train. I highly recommend this hotel.
Review 91:Beds: our double bed was actually two singles coupled together. Not fun to wake up inside the gap!
Review 92:Staff: friendly and helpful Bathroom: tiny, but showers have good temperature and water pressure Location: a minutes' walk to two resraurants, 5 minutes to a supermarket and a dozen more, 15 minutes to the laundry place
Review 93:There's nothing we didn't like. Our twenty-something children stated that they wish we had stayed in Hotel Gelber Hof longer.
Review 94:Charming, clean and very welcoming. Excellent breakfast!!! The hotel is situated in a lovely location. Among other treats, there's a quaint, yet mystical stair case winding up the facing hilltop. Also, we had a very memorable evening in the hotel pub watching the US/Belgium World Cup game. The owner went out of his way to make it a festive occasion for everyone. Note: We stayed here in 2012 and the new owners have made some noticeable improvements. We would definitely stay here again.
Review 95:Some loose tiles and a bit of mold in bathroom (not too bad, just older). A little dated. No wifi in rooms.
Review 96:Fantastic value in Bacharach. Perfect location and friendly staff. Provided a nice crib free of charge. Bar downstairs.
Review 97:There is no parking throughout most of downtown Bacharach- be prepared for that. Also- when obtaining driving directions, ensure you allow enough time to take a ferry if you need to get across the river. There are no bridges close by.
Review 98:Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. They even allowed us to have the breakfast even though we were a bit late. Location is wonderful- right in the heart of downtown.
Review 99:Nothing
Review 100:Room was very spacious, well furnished, suitable also for a longer stay. Hotel have really charming atmosphere, and have beautiful surroundings, I really love this village, it' s so romantic. Plenty of restaurants nearby. Personal in hotel is great, smiling all the time. Perfect buffet breakfast.
Review 101:Nil.
Review 102:Staff is friendly and the free breakfast good enough. The door lock of the room we reserved has some problem and the staff immediately changed a room for us.
Review 103:Noise from Trains all night. No air conditioning, but it was an unusual hot spell and probably rarely needed.
Review 104:Staff were friendly Breakfast was fine Room was comfortable & clean Good scenic walks in area Pretty town Views from up at castle
Review 105:This place is great! The hosts are so friendly and accomodating. The bar and restaurant downstairs are perfectly cozy. I will definitely be going back.
Review 106:No complaints; no problems.
Review 107:The manager, Michael, his wife, and thier staff were incredibly kind and helpful. Perfect location, fair price, nice pub, very accomodating. Seriously, when we arrived at the front door the manager greeted us by name even before we introduced ourselves. That's service.
Review 108:Staff were inviting, helpful, and great company at the bar for a young, solo traveller. Enjoyed my stay here immenseley and would certainly come back again given the chance.
Review 109:The hotel was charming and the proprietors were very courteous and helpful. They even presented us with a glass of very good wine because our stay happened to coincide with my birthday. The price was very reasonable, making it the best value for money we have yet experienced in Europe.
Review 110:Excella location, friendly staff and amazing breakfasts! Definitely would stay there again.
Review 111:The hand-held showerhead fell off in my hands. Made for a difficult shower! Parking was a problem.
Review 112:Great location, good service, great breakfast.
Review 113:Great staff and location Price was great and rooms were clean
Review 114:perfect location, friendly management, good value, great breakfast
Review 115:the single room was newly renovated and the smell was not good rooms are too small
Review 116:Wifi did not work at all and staff could not really speak English to try and assist
Review 117:Owner was easily annoyed when I didn't understand him, though he was much nicer the following morning. Room wasn't the nicest.
Review 118:The hotel was very pleasant. Great nights sleep.
Review 119:Car parking
Review 120:Location! Breakfast was delicious! Comfort!
Review 121:Lovely building in central location full of paintings, etc.
Review 122:Old building with pokey rooms and tired sparse furniture.
Review 123:Best WiFi connection we experienced in Europe and free.
Review 124:Wifi didn't work well & the owner insisted we pay cash.
Review 125:The bed was comfy & the room was an ambient temperature.
