Reviews for Youth Hostel Basel
Review 1:Nothing. Location is close to a few museums & galleries, and a 10 minute walk from central Basel. Also had dinner there, good food & good value.
Review 2:Staff were absolutely awesome.
Review 3:Nothing
Review 4:Very good location. In walking distance to all places of interest. 5-10min to a tram stop, 20min to the Bus Station by foot or 5-10min to a tram stop + 5min by tram. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good. You can have coffee or tea during a day. A kettle is at the reception. The room was very clean. There are lockers in rooms and in the basement as well. So you can leave your staff locked.
Review 5:The breakfast was OK, but I expected more for the price. And there should be net-conection in the rooms too, I think.
Review 6:I stayed with a friend and it was a great expirience, first because of the great location, the cleaniness, polite and friendly stuff.
Review 7:It's too far away from public transportation. We're getting tough to take our belongings to the hostel both go and back.
Review 8:All everything there is cool, great, peace, private and ever
Review 9:a little bit far to go walking downtown and for public transportation that's a hill to "climb" to get there. So for luggage not really easy. But hostel gives you public transportation pass during your stay :)
Review 10:Beautiful place, architecture design. Amazing breakfast. Ok price - considering Swiss options
Review 11:Be careful when booking, the rooms are not accurately described, so when I thought I was getting a single room with 1 bed, I landed up alone in a room with bunk beds, not ideal at all.
Review 12:Beautiful award winning architecturally significant building.
Review 13:It's not very central, but Basel is a small city. So, in the end, no problem at all.
Review 14:Wonderful design, nice staff, warm environment. I did not expect such a nice breakfast in a hostel. Definitely we can call it "a boutique hostel".
Review 15:Wifi was only available in the lobby and the reception was poor. There were no self service laundry facilities (CHF 15 for 2kg for them to do it) and no nearby laundromat.
Review 16:Staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was good. Breakfast was very nice.
Review 17:This is an austere sort of atmosphere, but I loved it. Everything is sparklingly clean, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly, and the facilities as described on their website... It is worth noting that I am over 65 and there were many others in my age group, along with the hikers, young families. This really is a place for people of all ages who don't need luxury, but just want a good bed, an ample breakfast and a fun place to land in Basel.
Review 18:Staff very courteous and helpful. Bed surprisingly comfortable for a simple bunk style. 2 tram rides and short walk to get there. Take tram 8,10 or 11 directly away from SBB train station for the 1 stop to Aeschenplatz then tram #3 to continue the 2 stops to St Alban Tor. From the rear of the tram look right and walk across through the city gateway and down the narrow street to reach the hostel at the bottom on the right.
Review 19:Staff. They were rude and did not differentiate at all in their attitude between the understandably noisy children staying there and the adult guests such as us who had paid a fair bit more for a private room. Having stayed in France the night before and Italy the following night the staff did not give a good impression of the Swiss at all e.g. 1. Corner room requested; answer 'We don't guarantee what room.' That was it. 2. Stayed there with my father so Twin requested on-line and checked in but room was a double; answer 'We don't guarantee what room.' That was it. No apology for being out into a double and having to go back down to get another room that was a twin. Several other examples; just not welcoming or accommodating at all.
Review 20:Design of building.
Review 21:Beer is not sold after 23 and the terrace closes at 21
Review 22:Very good breakfast, nice position (3 tram stops from the main train station), 100 meters from the river
Review 23:Check-in from 3pm but if you plan to arrive after 5pm you need to send them payment details in advance?!?!?! Ridiculous!!!! Booking.com confirmation said Hostel would provide confirmation for free travel from airport to hostel - they didn't provide this and I had to contact them for this - not good enough! Extra payment for towels. No soap provided in rooms or showers. Wifi only in reception area and isn't great. Lack of atmosphere, especially at night. Bar prices (including snacks, ice cream and soft drinks) are too expensive which doesn't encourage purchasing which leads to a sterile atmosphere. Large groups of school children allowed to run around making a lot of noise. Cost for replacing plastic room key is too much for accommodation aimed at budget travellers. Everything seems to cost extra, even the table football :-(
Review 24:Breakfast is very good. Good level of cleanliness throughout. Staff are helpful. Location is relatively good.
Review 25:The room temperature, no windows to open only a door onto a small narrow shared deck which we couldn't leave open to cool room down at night. Needs a fan or air conditioning in the summer heat.
Review 26:Fabulous staff, excellent breakfast. comfortable and clean. Loved staying here except for the temperature in the room
Review 27:good hostel but way too expensive; we arrived just after midnight (late flight) and they couldn't serve us food/beer and there were no restaurants/bars open in the area
Review 28:the staff were super warm, welcoming, and helpful.
Review 29:No wifi access in room. Cement walls gave room a cold feeling.
Review 30:Open at 1 am as we arrived very late due to rail strike. Host was very helpful getting us settled in.
Review 31:School groups can create a line at breakfast, so allow enough time to eat and still make your travel plans.
Review 32:Very friendly, relaxed, helpful atmosphere made our stay very enjoyable. Very close to a trolley stop making travel each day convenient. Breakfast provided a variety of good food to start your day, excellent coffee!
Review 33:Spider webs in every corner of the room Dbl bed with two separate mattresses is not fun if you are couple. Not easy to cuddle up
Review 34:Amazing location Free travelcard Breakfast and lunch options
Review 35:Unstable wifi.
Review 36:Friendly staff, very clean room, shower and toilet, large locker for storage, higher quality of bedsheet and blanket than expected. The best toilet and shower room I ever had in hostel I been to. The meals are delicious!
Review 37:There were just 3 toilets on the first floor. Although I have never seen them all occupied, it might be the case when there are many people accomodating.
Review 38:The rooms and the location
Review 39:there are bed bugs at room / bed #111... the bunkbed that is on the right, bottom bed. they bite me in legs and arms....
Review 40:all great except bed bugs....
Review 41:The hostel is in the lower part of the city. To go to the upper part you have to climb the hill because there are nos public transportation to there. Don't stay there if you have a heavy luggage or if you want to go out at night. The wifi is terrible.
Review 42:we had a very enjoyable stay, the staff were very helpful and friendly , the atmosphere very welcoming and I was happy to see such wide age range of guests.
Review 43:It's super! It's comfortable, great views, excellent bathrooms in some of the rooms. Shared facilities also very good. Ask for rooms 223 or 323 for corner floor-ceiling windows!
Review 44:We felt truly disappointed for the lack of heating in one of our rooms. Moreover, the staff had no solution for this problem, beside suggesting us to heat the room with a hairdrier which, anyway, was not available in the room. Considering the price, which is more closer to a hotel quotation rather then hostels' anywhere else in Europe, we would suggest to equip the private rooms with more services. Guests would feel more welcome. Telvision would be surely a plus, but also bath products, linen (the ones you use are really the worst I have ever seen traveling). Moreover, you do not clean rooms and bathroom! We stayed 4 days without any cleaning. Just awful.
Review 45:Position, right in the middle of the museums' quartier, and very close to the city center.
Review 46:Nice place surrounded by history .The stream running close to the property is something extraordinary ,I liked the sound of water running down the room balcony.Every thing was perfect, the staff was helpful and friendly.
Review 47:It was a bit difficult to find it, especially because I have arrived after sunset.
Review 48:The room and the place was extremely clean and also the price includes free public transportation within the city
Review 49:its location is a bit a hard to find on the first day. it's better to get there before sunset.
Review 50:location is close to downtown and museums. the hotel's existing and renovation design is fun. staff are useful.
Review 51:Architectural HIghlight Very nice and carefully designed details, lighing, furniture, materials, everything. One of the nicest Youth Hostels I've seen so far. Chapeau to the Youth Hostel representatives and the architects for supporting such a great project !
Review 52:We needed better directions from the train station to the youth hostel. It was hard to find in the dark.
Review 53:The location was lovely. The breakfast was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 54:Faraway up and down. Breakfast too many people. Check out time too early. Deposit luggage cost money. Wifi can not connect in the room. Everything is the basic offering but the price not. No suggest anymore.
Review 55:Hotel design seems good. Atmosphere feeling good.
Review 56:No wireless in rooms.
Review 57:Lockers with a refundable deposit. Plenty of bathrooms and showers. Friendly and knowledgable staff. The hostel was very tidy. A plethora of literature on nearby cities, entertainment and transportation. Laundry service with a small fee and 24 hour wait.
Review 58:Mattress To Thin Air Con Did Not Work Wi-Fi To Slow
Review 59:A Good Place To Stay For a Few Nights If Your On a Budget. Clean Decent Location Free Travel Card Adequate Breakfast Buffet
Review 60:Unchained hormones, noisy at day and night, always people smoking in the entrance door, young people running and screaming. The design is cool but looks like a futuristic prison. The wifi is only available in entrance. There is no parking lot. Our room did not have TV. Not the best place to reast.
Review 61:The building and furniture are modern, practical and minimalistic designed. The neighborhood is quiet and just a few minutes walking to the center of Basel. The prize includes a public transport ticket. The best youth hostel I ever seen.
Review 62:Just giving an opinion but the building fabric and design needs a little more warmth and less industrial feel. Despite this I loved the building!
Review 63:Facilities, the light and quality of rooms, toilets and common eating area. Inspirational building surrounded by trees and running water.
Review 64:I would have liked a comfortable place with a few couches to sit on as well as the seating area provided.
Review 65:The design of the hostel is interesting and well thought through. It is set in a beautiful location.
Review 66:commun space, there should be more sofas and stuff and not only long tables. the showers were OK, but there should be inside gender specific bathrooms.
Review 67:Space in the bedroom, silence
Review 68:Everything was clean except for the windows.
Review 69:Excellent location. In the middle of the city but in a quiet area. Goodbreakfast. Very stylish building. Fitting combination of concrete, wood, steel, a lot of big windows and color. Lugagge lockers.
Review 70:Toilets stink and hair in sinks. Otherwise, it was great!
Review 71:Almost everything! Safe, quiet, and pretty neighborhood next to a vibrant stream and 2 mins from the Rhine where a floating boat can bring you across for cheap. They supply you with a transportation card to use all of the public transit. Free water all over the city!!! Fantastic Jazz festival! Open door movie theater in town. Very friendly staff and helpful!
Review 72:No wifi in the room. Too much expensive like an hotel 4 stars. I had forgotten the password for the wifi in the room, I request at the reception it and I must to pay to get the password back!
Review 73:Breakfast - clean rooms ******************************************************************************************************************************
Review 74:Staff not so friendly to me. To others they where friendly so maybe its me! I asked to be in a female dorm. and two young french guys walked in and started chatting past 11pm in french. Cool if I am in a bar. But not when I am in my pj`s. Asked to be moved and they moved me without any problems.
Review 75:I like the location. By the river. You can hear the river flowing if you open your window. Bliss
Review 76:Can't tell anything bad about it.
Review 77:Very nice and clean Hostel at a perfect location in Basel. We stayed there during the isle of dreams festival and it was pefect for a good recovery after a long night. The rooms are perfectly isolated so we couldn't hear a thing from the outside.
Review 78:Difficult to find the location for the first time. We took the tram in the wrong direction. After getting off the tram, we asked a few local people for the way but they did not know where the hostel was. it's better to put a sign near the tram stop.
Review 79:The place is quiet and beautiful. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The 4-person room is spacious and comfortable.
Review 80:Staff (charged for my stay twice) Staff (not able to print out forwarded emails) Mattress - too hard No towels - had to pay for to rent them Loud guests at night. Smoking of guests directly under window Toilet and showers not in the room Way too expensive for a room

Review 83:Efficiency Cleanliness Value for money Breakfast included Design of the hostel Location
Review 84:Relatively expensive for a hostel.
Review 85:All staff extremely friendly and spoke excellent English. Nice central location, rooms have keycard entry and lockers for valuables.
Review 86:soap dispenser was not functioning wine glasses were not allowed in the room - had to drink champagne in plastic caps very slow checkin poor internet connection, probably because of the concrete walls
Review 87:architecture, aesthetics, view
Review 88:Very few travelers who were looking to meet people, very few English speakers. I would definitely stay again if I went with friends, but maybe not the best place if you are looking to meet others to explore with.
