Reviews for Hotel Steinbock
Review 1:Staff was rude, service was terrible. We were given a room in an annex building outside the hotel, on top of Coop. The room is like a basic student room. Not worth the money paid. The hotel did not allow us to change our reservation to cancel 1 night, they still charged the full amount. The manager was rude. Overall a very bad experience and would never stay there again. There are many nicer hotels in Wengen.
Review 2:The hotel is right next to the station.
Review 3:None at all
Review 4:Just great. Brilliantly helpful staff. Nice cosy warm rooms, Good food and very near the train and cable car station. Ideal for getting to the ski slopes with children
Review 5:We were very sad that we had to stay in another building across the street and not in the picturesque hotel they show online. It made it a little I confident for breakfast. I think they should state that on their website because it's a little misleading. Also, the room was noisy and we could hear other people above us.
Review 6:The location was perfect and close to the train station and gondola. The COOP was right there to get food and snacks and the pizza at the hotel was great!
Review 7:This little place is VERY conveniently located right next to the train station as well as the cable car station leading up the mountain to Mürren, and on to the Schilthorn, if desired. We found the rooms clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast was adequate, but a bit more options would've been nice. The building is older, but we did not consider this a problem. Clean, safe, comfy is all we needed.
Review 8:We were so close to the railway that noise was a slight issue. It did NOT damage our holiday.
Review 9:We booked late and were fortunate to find such a centrally located hotel at value rates.
Review 10:Unfriendly, extremly unkind staffs, not cleaness.I think It's because many guests are being attracted by location even in this moment, staffs think they don't have to show their kindness at all. We thought they were angry with something, but we found that they are always hate guests. :)
Review 11:Location, absolutely the best.
Review 12:I liked the views and staff accommodating our needs. Location was perfect for the various hikes we did around the area. Bank was across the street along with a grocery store. It was all good.
Review 13:The employees/owners (except for one) were not friendly and werealways spamming things around, like they were angry about something. My room was extremely noisy, because it was next to the communalshower and the bed was situated where the head is against the wallwith the shower. The last shower that was taken was a 01:30! Needlessto say I couldn't wait to get to my next hotel to get some sleep.Maybe they should close the shower at 22:00, or add better insulationto the one wall.
Review 14:The location was great and there was one person, whom was always veryfriendly. She was the one that checked me in and checked my out. I wishI would have asked her for her name. She was young with dark hair. Ichecked in on 14.09.15, around 13:00(too early, but left my backpack andwalked around until 15:00) and checked out with her on 16.09.15 around21:00. I checked out the night before my departure.
Review 15:Staff not that friendly but not exactly rude. No elevator - hotel has 3 floors. Room and bathroom very small.
Review 16:Close to railway station. Adequate for our purposes but would have preferred better quality.
Review 17:trains were very loud early in the morning. customer service check in and out was terribly slow - more concerned with helping restaurant guests that hotel guests
Review 18:location and breakfast
Review 19:The booking.com fiasco which made my booking as a single room whereas I searched for the said property by selecting two people as number of travelers. And inability of property to provide me alternate accommodation. The extra bed provided was of a very poor quality and broke the first night itself! Had painful days on my holiday.
Review 20:The location. You just can't go wrong with this place as far as location is concerned. The views all around are great (however it's true for every property at Lauterbrunnen.)
Review 21:Beware of what they don't show you! They have a second buildingacross the street that is horrible. (Dark depressing hallways that reekof disinfectant, stained carpeting in the room, messy brooms andcleaning supplies stored in the hall. Entrance to the building next tomessy pallets of cardboard recycling from the grocery store, and"view" from the room of the ugly train yard. Just ugly andcharmless, and though clean, felt like a cheap fleabag motel.) There isno picture of this building anywhere on their website! When we checkedin, they took us over to this building. They tried to "bait andswitch" us, told us that this is what we reserved. I said we didnot want that room, we wanted to stay in the nice-looking buildingpictured on their advertising. They said there were no other roomsavailable that night. I had to insist that they switch us to the betterbuilding for the other two nights of our stay. They were very unwillingto do this, tried to say "the rooms in the older building are notas nice" (not true, they are much better). After a lot ofunpleasant wrangling with the manager, he switched us to the picturesquebuilding that you see on the photo for the other two nights. (Still hadto stay in the yucky place the first night; I was angry.) My review isfor the pleasant stay we had on the second and third nights. I found thestaff to be unfriendly, probably in a bad mood from having to deal withthe consequences of unhappy guests whom they are trying to fleece withthis arrangement. I did not like the attitude of the hotel manager, though in the end he did comply with my demand for a decentaccommodation as advertised. Also be aware that there is no securestorage for luggage if you arrive early or leave late. It's justpiled up in the open next to the check-in desk. After we checked out, weput our luggage in a locker at the train station until we were ready toleave town.
Review 22:The hotel pictured in their advertising is actually very nice. The roomthat we stayed in, in that building (be aware) was clean, comfortableand had a pleasant view and balcony. Breakfast was pretty good, too.Cannot say the same for their second building, which is not nice at all.Convenient location next to the train station and across from atm, grocery store and transportation up to Murren.
Review 23:A bit dated property, and the noise from trains/vehicles
Review 24:Conveniently located next to the train station - which is also a negative early in the morning. Staff were helpful
Review 25:The room wasn't the best, and we actually stayed across the street from the main hotel they show in the pictures. We felt that this was a little bit misleading.
Review 26:Hotel Steinbock was in a great location, right on the main road in Lauterbrunnen. We had a view right out our window of the mountain and we could see Staubbach Falls as well.
Review 27:Budget room smelled like sewage or a soiled nursing home room. Staff said it was the old wood paneling that keeps a lingering stench. Bed springs could be felt through mattress.
Review 28:Best value we could find in a b&b/hotel in Lauterbrunnen for 2 rooms (parents wanted private bathroom). Martina was wonderfully helpful and upbeat! The food was delicious.
Review 29:The advert on booking.com is misleading - they have a 2nd buildingunattached to the main hotel, which is part of the building of thegrocery store! It is bland, ugly and low quality. They should simply getrid of it. They do not note this in the booking.com advert. When wecomplained that we wanted to switch to the main hotel, they did notapologize, but tried to convince us it was better because the furniturewas newer!
Review 30:Convenient. Reasonable price for town. The main hotel building is alovely old chalet, simple but cozy.
Review 31:The bed/sheets were obviously filled with dust-mites as my allergies were all over the place.
Review 32:Friendly Staff, good food great location, right next to the train station and bus stop. (for light sleepers trains can be heard)
Review 33:Saw the hotel picture in the website but got another building in 50m distance. Bad smell. Very Noisy. View of another building in 2m distance. Uncomfortable beds.
Review 34:Room probably needs a refurbishment, but much more than adequate. Wrong tog of duvet.
Review 35:I was in an annex, very comfortable with every convenience, good sized room, close to the station, with a good breakfast setup in the main hotel.
Review 36:Wifi was weak. Breakfast/ restaurant food was average.
Review 37:I travelled with my adult daughter. I really liked how it was right next to the train station, the co-op and the cable car station. The room was basic but sufficient.
Review 38:Only drawback... no elevator. .our room was on the second floor..so carrying big luggage was a pain..also no AC in the room..
Review 39:Location is excellent. .right outside the train station...cable car ride for murren is just steps away too.. restaurant in the hotel serves excellent food. Breakfast has variety too..Inma in the restaurant was very good..our room had a common balcony overlooking stabauchh falls..very nice view.
Review 40:Disappointed to be put in rooms above a supermarket facing the station across the road 50 yards from the hotel. Totally unacceptable.
Review 41:Main hotel is well situated. Breakfast excellent.
Review 42:We were not told in advance that our room was not in the Hotel proper, but rather was located 1/2 block away, and required us to climb 3 flights of stairs (no elevator) to get to the room. Parking was also 1/2 block away from the room.
Review 43:Located at the edge of town next to the train station. Noise was an issue but we still enjoyed our stay.
Review 44:Excellent staff. Clean and comfortable. Good breakfast.
Review 45:I thought the food (except the cold continental breakfast) very poor. I had two dinners - the first obviously prepared on a plate and microwaved - quite tasteless; and the second (spaghetti carbonara) was just lots of spaghetti in a garlic sauce with very little old bacon pieces and no apparent cream! I did not expect cordon bleu but the prices were the same as other better hotels. I only ate very little and complained the second time (spaghetti) but no apology or reduction was given.
Review 46:I wanted to be near the station which the hotel was - so it suited me. I imagine most people would not like that. No outlook, but I did not find the noise from the trains overwhelming.
Review 47:The hotel is right opposite the cable car station which was ideal for us as one of our group had broken his leg! Best of all the food in the restaurant here is excellent - their rosti is highly recommended. The rooms are cosy with a traditional Swiss chalet style. Overall very good!
Review 48:Breakfast was fine for a few days but too basic for more, but we were allowed to order a hot drink instead of breakfast if we wished. The room was not cleaned every day, but to a good standard if we pointed things out. Pollution on that corner next to the train station. Only one room key. When not all ski lifts are open access to Murren can be limited.
Review 49:Good clean and simple. Pizzas (when serving them). Human beings working there (although no chance to get to know them) Convenience factored high on my priority list (between trains to the two mountain ski resorts). The bakery next door gave a good meal option and sold gluten free bread.
Review 50:Unfortunately, I was in the room next to the shower and on my first night there decided on early night at 10pm, but a party of visitors took turns from then until 11:30 to use the shower and the walls were thin. Also room decor seemed very plain, but no big deal.
Review 51:Just yards away from the train station, bus stops and cable cars, one couldn't ask for better location. Breakfast very nice, staff nice, room clean.
Review 52:I have booked two rooms but the rooms are not in the same building. There is no elevators so we have to bring the heavy luggage by stairs..... There is no WIFI....
Review 53:It is very close to the train station (1 min walk). The service is okay, especially the breakfast.
Review 54:Our room was not in Hotel in the picture but in another building down the street. Touchy internet, nothing special about breakfast, room on busy and noisy road next to the lift up the mountain. Aged carpet needing replacement, no lift, sheets full of holes.
Review 55:Beautiful area with a lot to do!
Review 56:a little noisy as it's next to the railway
Review 57:room is nice with balcon and mountain view very convenient to go out with train\bus\cable car breakfast is good
Review 58:Our bath was cramped, minimal. (At least we had a private bath - somerooms have a shared bath in the hall.) The only window is a French door,so in warm weather you can have fresh air or security, but not both.
Review 59:Very convenient, right next to train station. (All other hotels areuphill!) Rooms are rustic, simple and cute. Swiss trains are quiet, sono problems sleeping. Good, friendly restaurant on ground level. Familyrun. Unadvertised, they also have a 2br apt with kitchen for families at200 sf per night in season. Four narrow-gauge and cog rail linesoriginate here, as well as a cable car, so excursions are easy.
Review 60:Some staff (the afternoon/night staff) were cold, not very welcoming or friendly.
Review 61:Our room (#11) was on the second floor and had a little balcony that overlooked the outside patio, and had a view of the mountains. It was a great addition!! Bed was comfortable (two twins pushed together). Bathroom was small but clean. Breakfast was good, and the breakfast staff were very friendly. Had the best coffee (and lots of steamed milk!) brought over to your table. The location is right next to the train station, which is convinient for traveling but not the most scenic spot in town.
Review 62:Nothing.
Review 63:Very close to train Station and cable car is across the road. On the main road so close to everything. Big room, really clean, great breakfast. Free wifi. Very quiet at night.
Review 64:when making the booking, we were not informed that our room is not in the hotel block. There is no reception at the building we live. It is a lodge rather than a hotel we are living in.
Review 65:breakfast is ok, located just next to the train station
Review 66:I'm a light sleeper, so doors opening and closing, or footsteps in the hallway, tended to wake me up. Fortunately the place wasn't too crowded when I was there, but this could be a problem if you sleep light and have a lot of late night guests down the hall.
Review 67:This place is right next to the train station, perfect if that's your mode of transportation. The staff were very friendly, and the free breakfast was excellent: assorted cheeses, meats, fruits, breads, cereals, and yogurts, and fresh coffee. Wifi was free despite the booking indicating it would cost 5 CHF. My budget single room was very small but worked just fine, and the view out the windows was right down the valley - very nice. The shared bathroom and shower areas were clean.
Review 68:No Tea or coffee making in room.
Review 69:Excellent location. Only a walk to cable car, resturant , water fall. Nice hot shower ,clean room and the staff were very helpful
Review 70:After I arrived, they informed me that I was staying in their "other building". It's very close - right across the road - but it's not your typical old wooden building.
Review 71:Lauterbunnen is a perfectly located town (amazing hikes on both sides of the valley) and Hotel Steinbock is probably one of the most conveniently located hotels there. It's right next to the train station and the local supermarket (while being totally quiet, and my windows were actually facing the road). The breakfast was pretty good - decent selection of different foods. The staff was quite friendly and helpful.
Review 72:No toilet or showers in the hotel rooms (the facilities are separate like hostel).
Review 73:The location was very central and hotel has a restaurant with free breakfast : ).
Review 74:If we had the windows open (which we did), the noise from the train station, street, and grocery store were quite loud and disruptive. This made for a poor night's sleep. (The beds were comfortable, but the noise was the problem.)
Review 75:The hotel was clean and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, which is always a huge plus. Also, we needed to change our reservation from a single room to a double and the hotel and staff were very accommodating and kind. They even moved our bags for us from the first room, so we were able to go about our day's activities without coming back to the hotel to move our things. That was very much appreciated.
Review 76:1) no lift to 2/3 floors 2) for a newly built or remolded hotel, there was mold all over the bathroom ceiling and inside the shower tiles. 3) the internet did not work in the room, we had sit on the stairs to get a few bars. 4) The staff could use a little training in Customer service. A Smile could go a long way. I'm sure that having to run a restaurant and the hotel side at the same time could be very tedious. All questions were answered with a yes or no. No elaboration to make you feel at ease or make you feel that you chose the right hotel. 5) the bed felt like you were sleeping on a brick.
Review 77:The Hotel Steinbock offers a breakfast.
Review 78:the staff is not very kind, small room in another building away from the main building, wifi is very weak
Review 79:near the waterfall and station, private and free parking
Review 80:There was no lift and the room was on second floor. There was no assistance provided to us for our luggage to carry up the stairs. As we were out for 3 weeks in Europe, our luggage was quite a lot so it was a pain to carry all that and back.
Review 81:Location is next to the train station which is very convenient. COOP (Convenience store) is right next to it. (only open until 6/7 PM). Free Wifi Breakfast was good
Review 82:Food in evening was of low quality. Breakfast ok though. Price was high for 2 star but was driven by location.
Review 83:New rooms across street from train station and next to cable car were more modern and provided comfortable beds and spacious facilities. Room was not noisy and location was excellent for visiting all attractions up the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys. Range of food for breakfast was on a par with any other continental breakfast serving hotel.
Review 84:Included breakfast was great. Room basic but adequate. They even had an electical adapter we could borrow as we didn't have the right one.
Review 85:Third floor room, hard with bad knees. Wifi didn't in our room. You had to go into the hallway to us it. We were in a annex building a half blocker on the hotel. You missed the feeling of being in the old hotel.
Review 86:Location , Swiss style , good breakfast
Review 87:Other than being across from the train station, this place is more basic than a youth hostel. Upon checking, we were led across the street to their "other building" above the Coop store. (It's like a 7-11). The room was clean, but zero frills. Only a half roll of toilet paper (I had to walk back across the street and ask for another roll. Since the registration desk is in the restaurant, I had to carry it out past people eating dinner), no Kleenex (sorry, not something they provide), and only two ketchup packet size packets of shampoo/soap for the shower (they told me they only supplied enough for the first night). The second day, we returned to our room at about 7pm, and found it was not cleaned. Back to the restaurant to beg for more towels, etc. This kind of "hotel" and "service" may be fine for some, but be warned. No lobby or entry way to relax like other hotels, and such a lonely, basic, depressing room made us not want to spend any more time (or money) here. On the plus side, because we wanted to get out and stay out, we did discover some nice hikes in and around Lauterbrunnen. But we had to go to the tourist information office, as the hotel/restaurant employees were zero help about the town and it's environs.
Review 88:The room in the back of the "other building" was very quite, since it faced away from the train station and the road.
Review 89:Was charged slightly more at the hotel than what booking.com listed. Be sure to confirm your total price before you take your room. 2 month old request for room with balcony was not given. Instead was stuck in room at back of separate building with no balcony or view. Had to speak with very agitated staff for 40 minutes to get what was requested. Just make sure you get an email confirmation of your room requests.
Review 90:Good location close to train station. Rooms with balcony have good view (but normal noise from town and train station). Good pizza at restaurant. Regular European breakfast with cold meats, cheese, etc. Separate building where we were placed is next to grocery store.
Review 91:Right next to train noise. Smokers below on patio... Could not leave our door open for fresh air. Hotel needs painted and common areas cleaned. Overpriced for what we received. If in the area again would stay at the Valley Hostel. Friends stayed there and it was half the cost and much nicer.
Review 92:View of mountains and waterfall. Breakfast. Room was clean.
Review 93:The surly woman who served breakfast in the morning (in the blue top). It would be nice to start the day with someone who gives a friendly smile and who doesn't order you around as though you are one of her underlings. She also never bothers to enquire whether you are satisfied with the breakfast and whether there is anything else you require. Quite frankly, she shouldn't be working in the service environment as she was also very unhelpful when we asked her about directions from the hotel to a specific location. Zero out of ten for her! Also why are there no tea/coffee-making facilities in the rooms? It is very rare to come across a hotel in Europe in this price category that doesn't provide this.
Review 94:Location, convenience and cleanliness.
Review 95:The hotel was right next to the train line and station which are noisy. The room was hot and stuffy and the only means of ventilation was to open the window - which meant an early wake up call at 5am every morning when the trains started running. The room was small and substandard for the high rate we paid. The photos on this website bore no resemblance to the room we had. The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows lumpy and hard. The hotel is tired and old and needs an upgrade.
Review 96:The wifi was good, the room reasonably clean, the water for the shower was hot
Review 97:There are two buildings, a main building and an additional building that is almost a block away. My room was not in the main building, and I did not know this until I arrived.
Review 98:Location is right next to the train station and the lift that goes to the train to Murren.
Review 99:A bit noisy by day,and the street and railway sounds begin quite early, but quiet enough at night.
Review 100:Wooden chalet, lovely balcony and view. Very handy for public transport, and gret breakfasts.
Review 101:The only thing was about the restaurant and stay not being in the same building The food was decent, but not extravagant. Maybe we could have tried something else.
Review 102:Location. It is a 2 second walk from the train station. Just come on to platform 1, and look to the right for the hotel. Also, the cable cars for the Murren and Wengen and the bus services are literally at your door step The restaurant and the staying are not in the same building. You have to cross and walk for a minute, which wasnt that bad. There is a Coop supermarket right below so thats another convenient thing. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was decent too. The breakfast the next day and the spread was pretty good.
Review 103:By far my biggest issue with this property was their complete lack of customer service. I booked a train ticket on my laptop for onward travel and kindly asked downstairs if there was anywhere in the hotel I could print my ticket. The lady stated that they don't have a printer and advised me to go to another hotel in the area to print it. I knew immediately she was lying as any hotel would certainly need to print documents out for their own business operations. I confirmed this lie upon checkout as there was a large Brother printer visible at the time I paid my bill. Needless to say, this single issue left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I visit Switzerland annually and do not plan on including Hotel Steinbock in my future travel plans. I would urge others to think twice before booking here.
Review 104:Steinbock has an excellent location being within just a few steps of the Lauterbrunnen Rail Station. This rail station serves many of the surrounding mountain towns and villages in the Jungfraujoch region. In addition, the Murren Railway is also quite close to Steinbock. This property was well kept and very clean. The wireless internet was free and it worked quite well.
Review 105:Have to carry heavy luggage up to the 2nd floor.
Review 106:Near to train terminal
Review 107:Located in the heart of Lauterbrunnen beside the rr station and next to the cable car to Murren, but not at all noisy.
Review 108:Beautiful location, good hearty food and welcoming and friendly staff.
Review 109:The location was near the train, bus and cable car station. Breakfast was yumm.
Review 110:no facilities in the room excepting bed and TV.
Review 111:Noise from train station across the street. Room was in a annex building.
Review 112:View. Balcony
Review 113:location is good. But the staff is always busy with something and not treat people kindly. feel soooo bad about their manner!!
Review 114:Noisy, old feaurnuture
Review 115:Good breakfast, clean, very beautiful place
Review 116:the is no elevator.
Review 117:Staff and location
Review 118:A basic hotel. The pillow is too soft.
Review 119:Convenient location, very close to the train station.
Review 120:Flexible about half-pension. Congenial staff. Very good dinners. Good wifi.
Review 121:You get noise from outside AND inside ! unfriendly receptionnist
Review 122:Location
Review 123:Convenient location, near station and coop, good breakfast
Review 124:Clean and simple room. Excellent breakfast. Kind staff. Beautiful location. Relatively inexpensive.
Review 125:Pillow is very soft .
Review 126:Breakfast was great . Great spread of cheese , fruits and cereals . Stayed in room with attached bathroom .
Review 127:good location, near train station, mini store and Staubbach waterfall.
Review 128:room not in main building and had no view of the valley which was of prime importance to us.
Review 129:Location is super !!
Review 130:Great location next to train station & cable car. Very friendly staff.
