The world-famous 1,000 feet Staubbach waterfall can be seen from Hotel Schützen Lauterbrunnen. Hotel Schützen has its own bus stop, which is in front of the restaurant.

Reviews for Hotel Schützen Lauterbrunnen
Review 1:Seems there has been a recent change of ownership (Chinese I believe). The restaurant is closed and the book in time is still 4pm. There is no info about where to store luggage if you arrive earlier:- (the train station has a left luggage room as well as smallish lockers). The WiFi was not working when we visited (I am a data tech and understand these things happen - but the staff didn't seem too bothered). Of the eight European 2, 3, 4 star hotels we stayed in this was the only one to offer no hot food at breakfast and had the least selection. In summary this is well below 3 star level and not good value - more like a 2? star hostel.
Review 2:View from the balcony.
Review 3:rooms were old fashioned, small, uncomfortable bed and pillows. Restaurant was closed for some reason. Shower in bathroom was tiny.
Review 4:welcome at front desk was nice the lady was nice and friendly. Parking was also easy and it had wifi.
Review 5:Breakfast. We were quickly moved to a bigger room when the hotel realised they had not catered for our request. All done within minutes which was lovely. Parking was free. Very friendly front desk staff on check in.
Review 6:Check in is 4pm, which is rather late. The hotel is old, and nothing flash. But it has everything you need, so if you are not too picky, this place is great.
Review 7:I was nice and close to the waterfall, and could see it from my bed. Staff were nice and let me check in 2 hours early for free (as they have quite a late check in).
Review 8:A bit run down in some areas but I understand it's recently been taken over so will probably get fixed soon. E.g. Worn carpets, funky shower curtains, and outdated bathrooms.
Review 9:The front desk staff were so friendly throughout our stay, and super helpful! Clean, friendly, comfortable.
Review 10:Checkin 4pm no one around until then all locked up. No wifi which was advertised. Rooms very dated not as appeared in the pictures. Hairdryer didn't work. Breakfast only available 7:30 - 9:30, not early enough. Restaurant not open. Rooms too hot and had a strong musty smell. No one around in the morning or after checkin. Staff friendly but had no clue what they were doing.
Review 11:Location
Review 12:There was hardly any staff there. Wifi & credit card facilities were broken on arrival and because they were closing for off season in a few days we were told that management wasn't going to fix it.
Review 13:The location was great. Close to the train station and walking distance to the rest of the town. Handy to get up to Jungfrau. The bar man was great company.
Review 14:By far the smallest room and worst bed I've ever slept on. Lots of backache after it. Only one pillow for the couple. No staff reachable between 21h and 10am.
Review 15:Location is great!
Review 16:We were charged twice by the hotel! We booked through Booking.com and we have emailed the former to deal with this but was informed Schutzen Hotel hasn't responded albeit repeated request to look into this! The reception was reticent that we hadn't pay so we did so during checking in on 9 Sep 15. Only until we check our credit card bill on return we realised they have charged during the online booking 24 Jul and check-in!!! I wonder how many had fallen for the same. We travelled around Switzerland over 10 days staying in various hotels and only had problems with Schutzen!
Review 17:The location was great and our rooms could overlook the waterfall!!
Review 18:The hotel staff was non-existent. Technically the desk was supposed to be open from 4-8 pm, but I only saw someone there once. The wifi, heater, and television in my room were broken. The room (particularly the bathroom) was very small, but not abnormally so by European standards. Warning if you plan to book and need wifi: they've requested a part from Taiwan and have no estimate when it will be fixed.
Review 19:The location is great. Not a far walk to the main train station; great view of the waterfall at night. The shower bordered on claustrophobic, but the water pressure and heat were wonderful after 17 miles of hiking. My friend described it as one of the best showers she's ever had.
Review 20:Wifi NEVER worked. The shared bathroom room needs more ventilation - it's like a sauna!
Review 21:Town centre, good heating, comfortable bed, sink in room, the share shower was warm and had good pressure.
Review 22:No wifi for the whole week/ time we were there and it wasnt resolved. We needed internet to book flights and accomodations.
Review 23:Central part of the small town, close to shops. Our keys was left outside the door for us because we checked in late
Review 24:We were told WIFI was out of service after checking in. Also room heater was broke. We reported it to staff and was assured someone was on their way to fix it. They NEVER came!! Very expensive for the poor condition it was in
Review 25:The breakfast was the worst we have had in our travels of Europe and the staff was not helpful in the breakfast room. The facilities needed updating and repairs.
Review 26:Location was amazing!! The view from our balcony could not be compared! We had a perfect view of the waterfall and Jungfrau train, magical!
Review 27:Latex mattress, which was too soft for me (and my back!). That was not an issue for the other people in our group though.
Review 28:Excellent location and view, also nice to have the breakfast included.
Review 29:not provide breakfast temporarily(diffrent from hote info)
Review 30:nice scenery, close to train stations(10 minutes walks), two triple rooms with blaconey are close to each other, so we can talk face to face, triple room have its own bathroom, cool chilly tab water.
Review 31:Unfortunately like many places we have been, the smell of tobacco gets into the room and there does not seem to be any control on where people smoke. As with all hotels in Switzerland, the mattress, pillow (only 1) with a duvet do not make for a good nights sleep. Why do the rooms not have a refrigerator, or electric kettle or jug is beyond belief
Review 32:The close proximity to the James Bond cable car and the waterfalls
Review 33:Very old and run down. Room and bathroom looks like they haven't been updated since 1970. Walls very thin and you can hear other guests. WiFi very slow and unreliable. Rooms not serviced each day. Rubbish from previous guest left in room. Can't check in until 4pm!
Review 34:Nothing
Review 35:Spartan accommodations, a click or two above a hostel, with lots of noise from other guests and very basic rooms/bathrooms.
Review 36:Great location in the center of Lauterbrunnen, and the gateway to Eieger / Monch / Jungfrau.
Review 37:If you were lucky, there was someone at the front desk from 4pm till 9pm. No one there to help the rest of the day and during the night. The hotel phones only rang the police (no wake up calls, calling room service, front desk, etc.) I had an injury (due to missing a step in their hotel that was not marked - it was covered with patterned carpet so it all blended in) that required medical attention. None of the staff cared nor helped me get to the Doctor. I was there alone with my three children (9 yrs old, 13 yr old and 15 year old). We ended up having to leave early for medical attention back in the USA. I had paid for 9 nights in full, due to the hotel charging me the full amount before we even arrived which they were not supposed to do, and they refused to refund me anything for the 4 extra nights that we were unable to stay. They would not even give me an itemized statement to file with our Travel Insurance company for my claim. They had no problem responding to emails before we arrived but now that I am simply asking for an itemized statement and if they could please mail me my daughter's diary that she forgot (and I would happily pay for the shipping) they are not responding. I have traveled the world and have never felt so vulnerable as I did in this hotel. The fact that no one is there, throughout the night, in case of emergency is crazy. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!
Review 38:Loved the views from our room however I do most rooms that I could see did not have much of one.
Review 39:Check in is at 1600. The attendant didn't show for an hour and no one helped us check in. Wasted time. Over priced for what you get, but Switzerland is known to be expensive.
Review 40:Wi-fi kept getting disconnected. No bolts on the bathroom door. Now I don't know if this is a norm in switErland or unique to this place. But would have preferred to have this.
Review 41:Very friendly & warm staff. The guy who recieved us was awesome. Also efficient in guiding us
Review 42:Very dated decor. The manager was not helpful or friendly. He told me heprefers booking groups/tours as individual guests are a hassle. Somuch for a gracious host!
Review 43:Location is good but that's about it. Otherwise it's just ok.
Review 44:I am 91 and was the Secrertary-General SCGB I wrote the guidebook 'Ski Jungfau' which sold 60,000 copies in the resorts. OUr agency 'Jiobs in the Alps sent many young people to work over 20 year. We had bookedand paid extra for an upgrade but were shown a room 3.5 m x 2.5 m, no washbasin, no loo. It was a disgrace. We walked out and complained to the Ttourist Office. A shameful.experience!!!
Review 45:The gentleman that checked us in also served us Apple streudel in the restaurant. He was wonderful with the kids and even made it in the shape of a mouse for them. We needed medications stored which they were very accomadating. Additionally, they allowed us to store bags the day we were departing which allowed us to see more in this beautiful town. Highly recommend this hotel!
Review 46:The hotel was a bit dowdy, tired decor, basic beds and breakfast very expensive for what it was. The other thing was, although the balcony was the best thing about the hotel, it was spoilt by adjacent guests from other countries who seem to have no problem with being loud and chain smoking. It was very hot when we were there and you had to have the windows open, so it was very inconsiderate, but what can you do!
Review 47:Location, location, location! We had a room with a balcony and it was just the best place to sit outside and look up to the mountains. The restaurant staff were excellent.
Review 48:An older style hotel, It says the hotel was recently renovated, but this did not included carpets, shared showers and shared WC. The base twin rooms are extremely small and difficult to open a suitcase. Ventilation in summer of the room is poor with no a/c and window position is bad as it opens over one of the twin beds. My view is that they are too small to rent at the price they charge. From what I saw some of the other rooms are a good size.
Review 49:Location and views
Review 50:The sofa and cushion smelt of cigarette smoke.
Review 51:The room was clean and got plenty space. The location is close to the train station, about 8-minute walk along the the street. Breakfast was ok. Staffs were nice and helpful. Also close to staubbach falls A very convenient and comfortable base for Jungfrau region.
Review 52:Shower is a tiny and awkward space. Wifi did not work for our two day stay.
Review 53:Great location right in centre of village. Good buffet breakfast.
Review 54:Check in only from 4pm. The café next door was full from about 3pm to 4pm of hotel guests waiting to check in....
Review 55:Room was good size, with balcony.
Review 56:Room is very small, no adjustable fan in toilet, price is expensive.
Review 57:Very friendly staff, excellent location.
Review 58:The location is fantastic! - and the value for money!
Review 59:No Wifi when it is advertised that there is Wifi. Bathroom was very small.
Review 60:Nice and helfpul staff. Ok breakfast, good location
Review 61:no wifi for 4 nights stay...staff daily assured that tomorrow morning it will work but didnt
Review 62:It's very nice hotel, a warm reception with friendly staff. Cleaning and quite!
Review 63:Spacious room with comfy bed, good breakfast. Only downside was the shared shower which was passable.
Review 64:Aforementioned, no WiFi access
Review 65:The room was awesome, but we did have to go up stairs for the water closet.
Review 66:Broken window, bathroom roof leak, antiquated electricals, no tea making facilities.
Review 67:It would help if they provide fan in summer. First week of August it's hot
Review 68:Great location, good breakfast
Review 69:More vegetarian food choices.
Review 70:peaceful location.
Review 71:Terrible service. Overpriced
Review 72:Location and balcony off the room
Review 73:Centrally located, clean, very helpful staff.
Review 74:Aging property that is due to have a face-lift (i.e., a new carpet).
Review 75:Great location and friendly staff.
Review 76:Cleanliness and comfort
Review 77:The room was not clean, we found half-eaten chicken behind the curtains.
Review 78:The location of the hotel.
Review 79:Location, staff were pleasant, lots to see and do.
Review 80:The wait staff at the restaurant were understaffed and disorganized. It made everyone crazy, especially with the heat that evening.
Review 81:Pretty bad room, very small with low ceilings, in corner of 3rd floor.
Review 82:Great location, good value
Review 83:Early check out policy and no breakfast or free parking.
Review 84:The location
Review 85:During quiet season, the restaurant might not be open. Best to check in advance.
Review 86:Location was wonderful, only a short walk to the train station. The family room was spacious and clean. When the restaurant was open, the food was wonderful and tasty.
Review 87:I was working in my room on the first day. When the maid came I said I wasn't ready and there wasn't a "Do Not Disturb" sign provided. Shortly after I got a stern phone call from the owner asking if I was sure I didn't need toilet paper or some other cleaning, as the maid was about to go home. I said no. Apparently this episode annoyed the owner. (Even though I was a single person in the room I was paying for two people in a two person room so I could have a balcony and a view.) The next day when I came back to my room I noticed the maid had removed the second pillow, towel, and hand towel. I asked at the desk for a second pillow and was told that it would cost 5 Francs, even though I was paying over 1,200 Swiss Francs for a two person room for seven days. After pointing that out I was grudgingly permitted to have a second pillow. Later when I went to the restaurant and paid for a nice full meal with a couple glasses of wine and asked for a simple glass of water, I was charged 2 Francs for the water. All in all hospitality was a low priority compared to making a couple of Francs. Even though the hotel was nearly empty for my first several days, I was treated like an annoyance rather than a valuable guest. Be careful that you don't make the owner annoyed or you will be treated like a bad employee who needs to be scolded.
Review 88:The setting is great. The furniture is solid wood and sturdy. The staff tries to be friendly and they do their jobs well, but I didn't get the impression that was a high priority for the owner who was very stern in public with staff and guests alike.
Review 89:Poor breakfast, having to go to bank to pay bills in cash, with inadequate explanation, restaurant shut 3 days, told to keep quiet after 10pm, and made to sign agreement not to have food in room - difficult with a child!
Review 90:Price ok, room acceptable for price.
Review 91:We were delighted by the helpfulness of the staff, location close to train to Jungfraujoch, cleanliness of the room, the prettiness of the surroundings, and again by the helpfulness of the staff.
Review 92:That I spent only one night. Should have stayed there instead of heading up top. Difference in time with bus was only 20minutes
Review 93:Fantastic view of waterfall and mountains from room 15 on 2nd floor. Very friendly staff great breakfast hot and fresh. Very clean rooms and close to both jungfrau and schtilhorn. Bus right outside the door for latter. Would definitely stay again to hike the area.
Review 94:No tea/coffee making facilities in the room.
Review 95:A well organised hotel catering for foreign guests very effectively. Very helpful staff. Stunning location.
Review 96:Small tiny rooms.. we couldnt fit one luggage bag inside.. the manager was giving out his rules in a very rude way, he said we must go to bed at 10.. weirdo.
Review 97:Lauterbrunnen was one of the most beautiful places ive been to.. but the hotel was extremely bad.
Review 98:The kind of hotel that makes you appreciate budget chains like HolidayInn Express. Small, cramped rooms; low ceilings; lack of most amenities.Paper-thin walls, floor and ceiling lets you hear everything yourneighbors are up to, inside and out. Overall, a place to flop in abeautiful area.
Review 99:Wonderful location close to Jungfrau in the middle of the Swiss Alps.Friendly and helpful staff. Good, free internet. Okay price comparedwith other hotels in area. Short walk to train.
Review 100:Nothing!!
Review 101:We loved this place. Locaton was fantastic and the views from ourbalcony were amazing every day. Check in was quick, easy andinformative. Room was tidied on a daily basis. Restaurant down stairswas handy also. A good spot to drink and meet people. 2 litre beersavaiable!! Close to the only pub in town whihc was one of the best pubswe found in all of Europe.
Review 102:We asked for a double bed and got two singles
Review 103:Fantastic location Friendly and accommodating staff A good range of food and drink options Clean and well managed Special events/menus
Review 104:Shower head needs to be updated (room 12). I feel like they nickeled anddimmed me too much; free coffee in the morning would be a nice perk. Theowner was not as accommodating as we are used to: check in at 4:00, nosooner; check out the day before b/w 4-6; does he really expect usto cut our traveling short to come back to the hotel to check out. Hedoes have our credit card..gees!
Review 105:Location, views from room, walking distance to train station
Review 106:The restaurant closed early.
Review 107:The view from our room was stunning. I have stayed at Hotel Schutzen before and hope to stay there again. It is basic and is ideal for skiers and walkers. Lauterbrunnen is stunning!
Review 108:Charged for tap waterWould highly recommend the location but of the town but if we were to go again, would probably choose to stay somewhere else.
Review 109:Lovely view of the waterfalls. Liked the location.
Review 110:1) We booked 2 rooms atvthe same price and expected to be the same standard but the owner tried to upsell us to something different (extra chf10/night just to have both rooms next to each other). However we realized this was due to the second room were in very poor conditions with many amenities broken (I.E. light bulb, cloth hanger) we as customer expect 'hotel' with such premium price should have all things checked before our arrival. We stayed there 3 nights and decided not to spend a dollar in their restaurant for food because of this.2) Staffs were not helpful on baby's need. For example we need hot water in the evening to make milk and they said they couldn't provide because kitchen is closed (we saw staff still working there!) instead they said we can rent a kettle for chf5/night, this immediately ruin the impression, and when the kitchen opened next morning they said hot water can only be provided at chf3/cup. Only when we spent extra effort to esculate to the owner then he offered free hot water.....is this the kind of service we should expect from a hotel?? 3) When we check in they said payment by credit card need extra 1.6% handling charge....we felt put off by this because booking.com didn't mention this in advance and the hotel manager told us we should have book with them directly and now they couldn't do anything.
Review 111:Overall experience were bad.
Review 112:The hotel was remarkably quiet, and the front staff reminds guests that the hotel has quiet hours and there are to be no parties in rooms. I signed up for a shared bath and ended up in a tiny room in what used to be the attic. While this might not seem attractive, I found the attic room utterly charming. The shower and toilette were on lower floors, but I never once had to wait for use of them. The location is right on the short main street in Lauterbrunnen and very convenient to the train station as well as the aerial cable car to Murren. There's a coffee shop just a few doors down from the hotel.
Review 113:We loved this hotel right in the valley of Lauterbrunned. Room had beautiful view of the waterfalls and mountains. Amazing just sat on balcony. Helpful and friendly staff. Owner was greeting his quest and fun to speak with. Very nice restaurant. It felt like a very authentic Swiss hotel with very nice accommodations.
Review 114:Internet access was lost on day 2, a little noisy on the street but we did have a balcony so that equalled out, the 4th bed was too close to the outside door
Review 115:Free Internet access, nice location, friendly staff, clean and comfortable
Review 116:We were a group of three friends from Malaysia. We stayed at the hotelfor two nights and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The staff werevery friendly and helpful. And Lauterbrunnen is a very nice, peacefuland beautiful little village.
Review 117:Cost, but that is to be expected in Switzerland. Everything isexpensive.
Review 118:Excellent location in the center of the village. Hotel restaurant wasexcellent. Staff was helpful with guiding us to scenic spots.
Review 119:Extra charges for everything adding up to an expensive stay.Lauterbrunnen is an expensive place but this hotel was over the top.Facilities were acceptable but we would have expected much more for theprice. The wash basin was so small that it was a challenge even to cleanone's teeth without making a mess! The proprietor had a very lengthyexplanation why everything was the way it was!
Review 120:Cheese fondue in the restaurant. The view of Staubbach Falls from ourbedroom window.
Review 121:Switzerland in general was one of the most expensive places to visit inEurope(eating/tours etc) but also the best.
Review 122:Staff was great, very helpful and excellent communication. Switzerlandwas our favorite place on our entire European travel. EnjoyedLauterbrunnen more than the more isolated villages (like Murren), stillvery isolated but more easily accessible and more choices to eat.
Review 123:Though the locks on the doors are "traditional" Swiss, they were incredibly loud and people kept clanging them open and locking for hours at night as we all had to share a bathroom. Also, if there were a fire, better be able to find the room key or you would be locked in the room and have to try to exit via the window.
Review 124:Me and my wife were having our own trip and visit Hotel Schutzen for staying in Lauterbrunnenn, and we found the staff and the boss were very helpful, charmed and so good service. We found our day was so wonderful in Lauterbrunnen and the hotel was so impresively good. Thanks for the staff and to the boss. Good job you two. Best regards. Restu and Cani from Indonesia
Review 125:Was up-sold on everything and charged for anything from the moment wewalked in. We were shown "our room" which was basically a lowceiling closet with a bed and an alternative room for 20 Francs more pernight. We then were told parking was more $. Then breakfast was more $.Then borrowing a plate for dinner in the room was more $. When checkingout we were then charged more $ for using a credit card. When I askedthe owner "Andreas" about all of the charges he blamed theSwiss Gov't for taxes and for the poor monetary policy vs. The Euroand Pound Sterling. Bad form.
Review 126:Location was nice.
Review 127:This hotel is all about charging you extras, check in took a long timedue to explaining and attempting to justify all the extras. Charge tohire a kettle for the room chf 5.00 per night! Then a further chf 7.00to have a cup to put your drink in not to mention the chf 50.00 &chf 20.00 deposit for them as well! Charge for parking whereas otherhotels in the area don't charge for parking. The rooms are so tinyand ours in particular dark and dingy.
Review 128:Hotel was very clean. Lauterbrunnen is a beautiful alpine village itselfbut our advice would be stay anywhere else but this hotel.
The Fine Print
