Reviews for Banff International Hotel

Review 1:The room we stayed in had been fully renovated and modernized with a very streamlined but comfy atmosphere. Great location with easy walkability to the main things you want to see and do in Banff. Skiing easily arranged and accommodated.

Review 2:Shower drain was quite poor, shower filled up quickly so long showers were a no go. Breakfast could be improved on (Ricky's)

Review 3:Amazing room, very clean and seemed updated, beautiful modern touches. Great view of the mountains even from the ground floor. Quiet location, quiet hotel. Amazing location, great value for money. Checking in and out was quick and easy. Free underground parking and wifi a big plus!

Review 4:Unfortunately our room wasn't ready at check-in time and it appeared the housekeeping staff were over stretched, and rooms were not cleaned until very late in the day.

Review 5:Great Hotel in what I believe is the Best Location in Banff. reasonable rates and were happy to allow a late checkout that enabled us to better cope with our ongoing transport. Very pleasant staff at front desk

Review 6:The fridge in our room was noisy and kept us up at night. We told the staff about it so hopefully they fix it. The walls were a little thin as we heard the partiers next door come in late and it kept us up for a bit.

Review 7:Our room had a cool modern look.

Review 8:Room was very run-down and dirty. Toilet was not clean. Renovations were underway in the same hall and it was very noisy. Hot tub had mildew in all the grout between the tiles.

Review 9:Near to downtown

Review 10:Rooms can use renovations as carpets were stained badly enough we didn't take off our shoes. That being said we had a toddler and I'm a bit of a germophobe.

Review 11:Great place to stay on a budget. Staff was very patient and kind. Great amenities and location is prime for the price. Great for a couple nights stay and for younger groups.

Review 12:Wasn't a bad experience but would be nice with a gym facility.

Review 13:They were very accommodating to our requests. Brought a couch to our room within the hour :)

Review 14:The restaurant attached to the hotel called Rickys. Manager of the restaurant was rude to both clients and the staff The spa was broken fir the whole 2 week stay

Review 15:Excellent location. Excellent reception staff. Good ski / boot room. Ski bus stopped outside. Coffee in the room

Review 16:Our first room was dirty, there was hair in the bed in between the sheets and on the pillowcases, as well as dried soap and human hair from the last guest shaving stuck to the bathroom walls in multiple spots. So they moved us to their nicest room but unfortunately the cleanliness was lacking there as well. Hair on the floor, the bathroom sink wasn't wiped down, there were spilled coffee stains all over the shelf where the coffee pot was. For a $200 room the view was great but I definitely expected more since we were in the nicest room in the hotel.

Review 17:Our room was dirty so we were upgraded to the best room the hotel had to offer.

Review 18:Rooms were aged. The fridge was missing from the room. Steam room wasn't working. The rooms didn't get cleaned until almost 5pm.

Review 19:Location was great.

Review 20:Mundane, expensive rooms. Noise easily heard between rooms. Took two hours to stop a party in the neighbouring room in the middle of the night. Rooms bare. Normally hotels enhance the feel of a room on a website but these rooms felt and looked absolutely nothing like the comfortable appearance online. Just... plain . Mundane.

Review 21:Awesome location. Good restaurant downstairs and extremely friendly and helpful staff. Beds were comfortable.

Review 22:There are NO atmosphere in the newly renovated rooms, all white and modern, not in line with a ski village, could have been in New York and would not know the difference. There were no hotel or local info brochures available in the room, no tour desk, the staff just do their duty and compared to other hotels in the area don't go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. We had neighbours partying so late into the morning that we could not sleep as the walls are paper thin, the renovations did not fix that! We stayed at another hotel for 3 days prior and wished we stayed there longer as we certainly did not enjoy the time at BIH.

Review 23:Facilities overall a little worn, however, the remodeled rooms looked like they will resolve the issue.

Review 24:Location was in center of town. Easy walk to restaurants and shops. Next door to Sunshine ski village shuttle pickup.

Review 25:I disliked that the room had just been redone and you could tell that the staff had not put in the effort to maintain the cleanliness of it. Also the hottub smelled strongly of bleach likely because it had not been properly cleaned in a while. I say this because there was yellow sludge marks along the side of the hottub.

Review 26:I really enjoyed the updated room for the low cost as well as the location to downtown. Staff were friendly and prompt to follow through on requests.

Review 27:Rooms need a update, no lights enough and for 3 to 6 people there is not enough seats. Also the bathroom is older but good shower

Review 28:Friendly staff on good location

Review 29:Comfort was not good at all. We stayed in a remodeled modern room which was cheaply remodeled and that's being nice. The remodel noticeably cut corners on comfort and finishes. Accommodations were sub par. The common areas are below average and overall facility was sub par. I would not recommend the stay unless the hotel owner/operators decide to put considerably more money into the facilities. The staff was very kind but I had to rank as poor mainly because the overall experience does not deserve a 3. Apparently booking.com rating system is weighted toward the hotel because I have marked poor on everything beside location and the overall review score generated by booking.com is a 3.3. I would give the score a 2.3 with location and staff being the only good aspects of the hotel. But accommodations, comfort, cleanliness, value, and facilities were very poor. AND we had a fully remodeled modern room! The pictures are false advertising and the hotel operators have cut corners on the upgrades. Cheap uncomfortable new mattresses, pillows and bed frame. They could have put the mattress and box spring on the floor which would have yield little difference. Cheap flimsy cabinetry and closet. Old, not replaced heating system and thermostat which did not work. Old phone systems. AND they tried to charge additional for local calls stating it was long distance! They fortunately omitted the charge but from my understanding long distance is the area code being different. (403) is the Banff area code which is what we dialed and yet the charges still showed up. Overall the hotel felt cheap with a complete lack of accommodations to make up for its cheaply done remodel and poor overall value. According to the locals the Banff hotel owners have a bit of a monopoly on the hotels and need to be held accountable for they complete lack of concern for making the hotel facilities better for us as consumers.

Review 30:Paint peeling off window frames, mould in bathroom, heating not working in room, can see why they are renovating but left it too long.

Review 31:location, friendly staff, having Rickys grill at the hotel and the free onsite parking.

Review 32:We had to ask for more towels, but they arrived promptly. They have a free breakfast deal for Albertans, but we couldn't qualify because we used booking.com.

Review 33:Front desk staff were friendly and polite. I appreciated the mid-century modern room design and the bed was extremely comfy. I can't argue about the location. Just steps away from all the shops and restaurants downtown Banff!

Review 34:upgraded but they changed me to a "contemporary" room that felt cold and jail cell like. Was NOT what I requested. Hallways very dark and dingy.

Review 35:location close to the hospital which was my purpose

Review 36:The hotel sound isolation is generally poor apparently dues to age. Hope this will be fixed upon completion of ongoing renovations.

Review 37:The location of the hotel is great with good mountain views. The family room with 3 beds was ideal for us. Though the room is old fashioned, nevertheless it is clean, roomy and comfortable. Great staff everywhere including at the underground parking. We enjoyed our stay at the hotel.

Review 38:We found that the people in the town party until 4 am in the morning so we didn't get much sleep as well as the train going by every other hour.

Review 39:The room we got was very clean spacious and romantic for the occasion as we were celebrating our anniversary.

Review 40:The service at Ricky's was the most appalling I have ever encountered. As well there was a room near ours that received a noise complaint so there were "security" guards camping outside our room for an hour late in the evening. Anytime our phone would ring they would bang on our door and tell us we were going to be evicted from the room. We looked out our spy hope to see that one of them was making a cupping motion up against our door to be able to hear as much as they could. Our room wasn't even the one that had the complaint nor was it our neighbors. I've never been treated with such disrespect.

Review 41:It was walking distance to our destinations. The front desk staff was helpful.

Review 42:Breakfast was ordinary and service was not as welcoming and smiley as we had experienced elsewhere in Canada.

Review 43:Great location in centre of town with good shops, bars and eating. Car park very convenient. Nice comfy room in modern style. Good value for money out of season.

Review 44:Room was upgraded but the upgraded room seemed cheap and no bathtub. No chairs or table to use and everything stark white. Room seemed cold because of the white color.... Not warm and romantic which is what we were looking for.

Review 45:Friendly staff. Clean room.

Review 46:For the price the stay was great. I understand the room was dated and in need of upgrading but the price was right considering... The view out the front of the building was nice too.

Review 47:It sees in the room details that there is refrigerator but when we enter the room there is no refrigerator.. Disappointed

Review 48:The location is very accessible

Review 49:We stayed here twice. The second time we got one of their older rooms. It was clean and totally okay, but their are renovated rooms which are very modern in style that would have been nicer.

Review 50:They have a bunch of renovated rooms that are very modern in style and super nice. Try to get one of those rooms.

Review 51:Dated rooms, need upgrades. It looks dark inside and the front desk lady on our time of check in was somewhat rude. Not enough front desk attendants on a WEEKEND.

Review 52:Location and the size of the room.

Review 53:There was not enough parking. It was underground and dark. We got there at 4:30. There was laundry and garbage in the hall on the way to the elevator. Not a nice welcome. The room was nice but not like the picture online. It was not as good as I hoped for. I was called in the morning to move my car it was blocking someone else. I was out walking and had to hurry back. There was a very nice staff member in the garage. He agreed that with me that my car was not in any bodies way.

Review 54:Location

Review 55:Room was a strange design, with lots of space that could not be used as there was no lighting !! No comfy chairs to relax in.

Review 56:Room was generally good & spacious. Comfortable. Great location on the main street right where the shops begin. Good parking underneath the hotel.

Review 57:There wasn't a lot to dislike really!! It was a struggle getting the cleaners into the room and for two days we didn't get our room cleaned. I asked at reception on our way out one day if we could have our room cleaned, it was but things were replenished and the room wasn't hoovered! No big worry though it didn't spoil our stay at all!!

Review 58:The location of the hotel was fabulous, so close to the main shopping area, bars and restaurants. The staff were lovely and helpful!! The room we had was massive. We stayed in room 601, it really was big as was the bathroom. It looked out onto the Main Street and had a lovely view of the Sulphur Mountain!! It was a little loud over the weekend but it was just people walking home from a evening out enjoying themselves!! The attached restaurant to the hotel is called Ricky's, nice and easy for breakfasts!!

Review 59:Had bad luck with the in-room coffee makers. The first one didn't work at all. Housekeeping was quick with the delivery of the second coffee maker but it only switched on (red light), it didn't heat the water or brew coffee. The desk clerk immediately offered a discount to cover the inconvenience.

Review 60:Close to town. Everything was within walking distance. Huge room! Lots of width in underground parking spaces.

Review 61:The shower door does not stay closed and there is no fan in the bathroom. Other than that it was very nice

Review 62:we were at a volleyball tournament at the high school so the location was the best we could ask for

Review 63:Rooms are old and dated. Mold on the bathroom ceiling.

Review 64:I liked that we were close to the restaurants and shops...quiet room but no view. Also liked the underground parking.

Review 65:Parking garage is too short for my truck (factory height); this matters as parking in Banff is a challenge at the best of times. In summer parking in Banff is chaos.

Review 66:Very very noisy especially the trains and the banging of doors.I found the staff at the front desk very helpful but couldn't say the same for the bar staff

Review 67:Location very good. Was very clean.

Review 68:The view from our room was a back lane with a wood fence.

Review 69:Bed was comfortable, shower was fantastic. Hotel was quiet despite the mass number of people staying there.

Review 70:Not nearly as bad as some reviews...Clean with updated showers and bathooms...but no bathroom fans or air conditioning but didn't really need that.

Review 71:Room gets a bit stuffy but this is a minor point, you can open the window. We were there in Autumn. Not sure how things would be in winter.

Review 72:Close to shops. Free parking. Spacious room. Plenty of amenities.

Review 73:Had to keep asking for things (Extra towels, spare roll of toilet paper, etc). Wish they had put sheers on the windows instead of just very dark blinds

Review 74:Good location. Great front desk staff, Newly renovated room. Underground parking

Review 75:Unusual decor, but not oppressive.

Review 76:This is an eclectic facility. Our quarters appeared to be in remodel transition form efficiency apartment to double occupancy hotel room. Bath and sitting room downstairs. Two queen beds in "loft". The decor was stark. Plastic chairs, end tables of pine stumps. Small couch. Two pictures on the wall, two beds and a small table upstairs...Stark white....but it all worked. It was clean, comfortable, and functional.

Review 77:The room was excessively hot. Had to have the window open and fan going constantly. Because of the snow it was melting off the roof and dripping on a tin cover outside our room. Sounded like someone drumming on a tin pot all night long. Bed sheet cleanliness was questionable.

Review 78:The location is great. The staff was helpful and friendly. The hot tub was a nice escape from the cold.

Review 79:Would have liked the coffee sachet replaced each day. Had to ask housekeeping in the corridor for a new sachet each morning.

Review 80:We had the town at our door. Undercover parking included. Renovated, airy room.

Review 81:An ice machine near the room was very noisy during the night and despite reporting this, nothing was done about it. The room would have benefitted from air conditioning.

Review 82:Ideal situation for Banff Centre. The room was clean and newly renovated

Review 83:We booked this hotel well in advance, it looked like a comfortable hotel, from the description and photo, I had asked for an upper floor, which we got, the room was on the sixth floor but the the the lift did not service this part of the hotel, we are both over sixty and on arrival the staff should have taken into consideration our age and baggage when offering the room, apparently the part of the hotel we had been given had been recently renovated, the access to the room from ground floor was dark. The room, although had most of the facilities required, lacked the comfortable touch, we were celebrating our 40th anniversary, and this hotel was the most expensive of the six hotels we used for our trip across Canada, it lacked simple things like a comfortable chair, a make-up mirror out of the bathroom (once the shower was used, the mirror would be steamed up for 15 mins or so, no alternative for the ladies to dry their hair while the bathroom was used by partners) every hotel we used had a safe in the room for added security, not this one. The price should reflect all thing considered, another point to consider is the location of the station, where on our last night no fewer than five trains passed through Banff, from three in the morning, each one blasting their horns as they went. I put this hotel a little better than a backpacker hostile.

Review 84:The location of the hotel was very good,

Review 85:The hotel is a little dated but well maintained.

Review 86:The location was excellent with in house dining. Very close to the shops train station. Enjoyed the spa and sauna as well. Large rooms with very comfortable beds. Free wifi

Review 87:Housekeeping staff were poor, didn't clean the bathroom, toilet or shower . Didn't empty the coffee machine or replenish the coffee.

Review 88:The location was perfect. The receptionist was very pleasant and very helpful. The guys in the bar were friendly and helpful. The food and service in Rickies was excellent. Wonderful comfortable beds.

Review 89:"Renovated" suite; the curtains are pull down which leave a lot of light coming in; they promise wi-fi but don't mention that it's unlikely that it will work.

Review 90:Welcoming front desk staff.

Review 91:Nothing everything was fantastic

Review 92:The location of the hotel is very good, central to all shops and restauraunts, views are fantastic and staff very friendly and helpful

Review 93:Room tired needs upgrading and room facilities such as coffee making and these weren't clean when rooms were attended to

Review 94:Location and service at desk was great

Review 95:Ricki's Restaurant was short staffed and, as a result, service was slow (but friendly).

Review 96:Loved the location in Banff and was very pleased with availability on short notice (travel related to death in family).

Review 97:Internet would not stay up over 2 min. No soft pillows. When we extended our stay, they failed to clean our room. When they came they only emptied the trash. Did not give us a dry bathmat and hand towels or even straighten the beds.

Review 98:Convenient to town for shopping, a variety of restaurants and Banff Park. Nice, comfortable traveler's rest. Restaurant in building had good food but service was slow. People were friendly and helpful.

Review 99:Completely overpriced. Bed not covered fully with duvet cover. I didnt even want to sleep under the duvet. Bathroom super outdated. Previous guests hair left in the tub!!!

Review 100:Bed was hard, no ventilation, no AC, facility is clean but shows wear and looks tired. Lobby is dark and uninviting. Used by lots of large tour groups. Would not stay here again.

Review 101:Located close to shops and restaurants.

Review 102:Cleanliness is next to godliness but this place must be Hades. The staff had to be prompted to supply the basics and the towels in the bathroom were very! White being only an illusion

Review 103:The car park! Ceiling of roof far too low and despite a few visible warnings much damage to car trunk doors when opened. Also exit signs and exit door not very well signed.

Review 104:Room spacious and bathroom adequate. Decor could be updated a bit to make it brighter. Hotel outdoor name sign could be in bigger letters as quite difficult to spot when driving along trying to find it amongst so many similar hotels.

Review 105:Some days our room was not ready until late afternoon.

Review 106:Great location, very close to the shops and restaurants of Banff. Spacious room was great for a family.

Review 107:Noisy outside on street at night, need more counter space in bathroom and a fan, rooms were not swept, lighting too bright

Review 108:Staff very friendly, good location

Review 109:My husband has a bad back and found the bed a little hard.

Review 110:Lovely big room and comfortable armchairs. We didn't arrive until midnight and it was no issue.

Review 111:2 elevators to get to 5th floor is confusing. Renovationed room did not seem complete. No mirror in room, therefore only 1 person could get ready at a time in the bathroom. Bathroom did not have any counter space. And I was very surprised that there was no AC. I see you question about the free breakfast, if there was a free breakfast we were not told about it.

Review 112:Location and newly built or renovated section of hotel

Review 113:Wifi was terrible - very slow. Hotel is a bit dated.

Review 114:The location was great, easily within walking distance to the centre of the town. Room was big with a mezzanine for the children.

Review 115:Restaurant food did not look appealing to us (sort of heavy). Garage has very low clearance, rather claustrophobic.

Review 116:Very clean and comfortable, great location near restaurants and visitor center. Staff ranged from friendly and helpful to polite and not quite as helpful but not bad, with more of the friendly and helpful.

Review 117:Not much, peculiar floor layout, have to climb a flight of stairs to get to room with baggage in tow. No parking valet, have to go in to get any info.

Review 118:Location Free parking WIFI

Review 119:we stayed at rm 219. the carpet was stained. view was of other rooms' windows. lol hope there was microwave available.

Review 120:nice location. parking at basement seems secure.

Review 121:There is no AC in the Hotel. The room had a ceiling fan and they offer additional fans if needed, but it is absolutely not enough. The bathroom has no ventilation at all, water pressure was very poor and the whole room was not really clean. Would definitely not stay there again.

Review 122:Location was the only good part about this hotel

Review 123:Bands is hot in the summer and this property has no air conditioning. It was too hot to sleep with the windows closed, but exceedingly noisey until 2 a.m. Leaving them open.

Review 124:Hotel needs updating for the price that is being charged. Not great value for plastic chairs. No air conditioning.

Review 125:The showers were great and parking undergound was a bonus.

Review 126:Found a few hairs in our beds... not sure if the pillows were actually washed or not which was disappointing.

Review 127:Excellent location right on Banff Ave where the stretch of hotels ends and the shopping/dining begins! A 5-10 minute walk from all there is to do in Banff and 10 minutes to the river which boasts beautiful trails for a quick hike in the morning or before bed.

Review 128:nothing all good

Review 129:The location is fantastic right in the centre of the main Avenue, close to shops, restaurants and great views, we were upgraded to a new room it was huge, with mountains views, cant wait to go back, parking was under building was ample parking, staff were great

Review 130:Would be nice to install more storage space (shelves) in the bathroom.

Review 131:newly renovated room, especially the bathroom. It was very clean, modern and comfortable.

Review 132:The lack of air conditioning in the height of summer, in a room which has the sun directly on it for 6 hours is not a comfortable experience. The attached restaurant failed to order the ingredients of its "famous" dishes and could not produce a Mac 'n' Cheese three nights in a row!

Review 133:The Hotel staff clearly understand the issues this dated hotel has and treat the guests like royalty; they really want you to have a good stay.

Review 134:Bath towels were only a little bigger than the floor mat, one had a hole and all the towels were old and hard. Room was decorated with Ikea type furniture and not up to the standard of $$$

Review 135:Location and free parking

Review 136:Room was really nice but faced Banff Street so was extremely noisy.

Review 137:Great location and room was nice. Coffee served all day in lobby. Staff was really nice.

Review 138:Our hotel room wasn't ready when it was meant to be, so we had to wait. When we got to our room it was hot and cleaned to substandard condition - the toilet seat had pubic hair on it when we arrived - appalling, this confirmed we needed to do some extra cleaning ourself to feel at all comfortable to stay. There was no airconditioning and the window didn't open very wide which meant airflow was minimal which made the room even more intolerable. There was a ceiling fan which did its best. This facility appeared to be understaffed, very few were visible and the front reception desk only had one person managing check-ins and check-outs that we saw, it was not uncommon to see people lining up for this service. Overall during our trip around Canada this was by far the most terrible hotel we ever encountered - we felt it is probably on the brink of 'going bust' financially due to the condition and service of this facility. I definitely do not recommend this hotel for the money you spend to stay a night. The only positive comment I can make for this hotel is its location - it is in the town, but in saying that there were many others in town also.

Review 139:Upgrade to newly refurbished room was without request and was undesirable. Says it's on 5th floor but it's on 2nd overlooking Safeway car park. Carpet cleaning in public areas in daytime not good. People allowed to sleep on lobby sofas during the day diminishes the standard!

Review 140:Problem with room resolved promptly and very satisfactorily.
