Reviews for Sunstar Alpine Hotel Wengen

Review 1:All of Wengen is expensive and the hotel pricing is comparable to others like it, however, expect dated decor and small rooms (difficult to have 2 suitcases out). Lack of breakfast buffet variety; basic fare focussed on UK guests.

Review 2:The staff can not be faulted, excellent hospitality. The breakfast was reasonable and a central location close to train station and gondola. Great views. Great Wifi.

Review 3:The breakfast buffet is just "OK". Does not correspond to the level of the hotel.

Review 4:The staff is very nice and helpful. It is possible to use the hotel facilities also after checkout. It's great to shower and enjoy the pool after a day hike before heading home.

Review 5:I could not get the free wifi to work at all during my stay - and the only instructions are in German and the support is some external company, so beware of that.

Review 6:Extremely convenient being near to the train station and opposite the Mannlichen lift - which would be perfect in the ski season. Nice swimming pool for relaxing in after a hard day's hiking or skiing. Very friendly and welcoming staff. There was Marmite at the breakfast buffet - a first in my 4 years in Switzerland.

Review 7:no possibility to eat in the evening, restaurant was full booked, this is a problem . The price, due to the swiss frank is to high, if this does not change ,next season will be difficult, austria and france are much cheaper

Review 8:sunstar is a good hotel, good staf and good swimmingpool

Review 9:Hotel shut at 10 30 needed key to get in. Bar shut early if nobody there - closed when I came back in. Female restaurant staff very good but male staff poor.

Review 10:South facing room, food very good, live music good when on

Review 11:The staff was great! If you are going to take advantage of the great pool and the things the hotel has to offer, I recommend paying the extra money to stay here.

Review 12:Location.. , since I have younger kids, You move out of interlaken, then park, then drag your languages to the train in an out , although hotel is nearest among others to the station. By train from interlaken to the hotel is 1 hr by train, and does not get shorter by car! since the train is slow and runs every 30 min. the rooms looking at the street facing two eateries, with many standing our in the street for cigarettes, and holding drinks, talked loudly and non stop till midnight.., Other than the two staff I mentioned , There was absolutly lack of personal touch, The tough looking senior hotel managers (at least what I think), looked at our family with an investigative eye, and indifference !! although we stayed for 4 nights, but no worries, the breakfast guy and Julie, made it even.. with their politness every day we see them.

Review 13:The village ! , ooh the village is serene and secluded and filled with friendly people. The view from the main street looking at the valley.. although it is car free, but the main street had mini trucks going up and down for ? construction. oops , I forgot the hotel, ofcourse it is a nice small hotel, 60 some room, nice swimming pools , steam bath, nicely appointed suits , then how could I forget Julie at the front desk! and the gentleman running the breakfast My booking was a last minute affair..,, Since I did not find any vacancy , if you key in hotel address to google map, it tells you, 17 min by car, which meant you reach the train station , confused and in the dark , I called the hotel , where Julie, patiently put up with my stress, and told my son , how to get there…., did not leave the hotel till we arrived , around midnight, then upgraded two of our 3 rooms. Thank you Julie.., for doing the extra..

Review 14:Rooms small even though we had a family room which was larger. Wifi was terrible!

Review 15:Location was great. Pool was nice if the weather had been better.

Review 16:Food choice was a bit limited, especially desserts

Review 17:Staff and location

Review 18:good location , nice hotel with good facilities

Review 19:Nothing

Review 20:Excellent front staff. Her recommendation was perfect to enjoy Jungfraujogh.

Review 21:Only place in our whole trip of Europe where child wasn't given an extra cot. Yet the facilities provided were good.

Review 22:Everything

Review 23:Friendly staff, clean room, good view from the room. Quite comfortable to stay.

Review 24:Dinner was mediocre, overpriced, and very rude waitress!

Review 25:Great location! Close to train station, and beautiful views!

Review 26:Interior was not so good.

Review 27:Location, near to train station, shopping and cable car.

Review 28:We just didn't know that we have to use the train to go to the hotel.

Review 29:Friendly staff and very helpful.

Review 30:wifi

Review 31:Location and people working there

Review 32:Hotel location is excellent.

Review 33:Can never understand beds with a board at the end restricting your foot movement. They must be made for the very short person in mind. No a la carte menu.

Review 34:Good situation for the cable car. Nice pool and facilities.

Review 35:In-door pool to cold. No Chardonay wine on the menu.

Review 36:Our host were excellent. Staff fantastic. Great location. Food outstanding quality. Highly recommend Sunstar hotel for your travels.

Review 37:Nothing really. The prices are high but consistent with other hotels in Wengen.

Review 38:Excellent hotel, friendly staff including manager who came out to greet us on our arrival. The facilities are first class and the location is fantastic. I would recommend staying to any of my friends and would love to return in the future.

Review 39:Internet did not work and we booked the Sunstar because it advertised free wi-fi throughout the hotel. This was necessary for us to be able to connect with our business in the U.S. We could not text, and email was sporadic at best. The staff said that Sunstar was having trouble with its system. But they were not helpful. We started to try to find another hotel, but then it started working just after we checked in. But throughout the evening and the night and the next morning, we still could not text. It was also a very complicated process to log in (very easy in other hotels we stayed in throughout Switzerland). Finally, they gave us a special password. But that didn't work either. So we complained the next morning as we were checking out. We told them we had to charge more than $100 in international phone calls because we could not text or use email. We asked the desk clerk for some kind of small compensation or reduction in our rate. She said she would have to call the manager and wake her up. This was at 8:45 am! So we said, please do. The manager of the hotel would have nothing of it. Quite rude, actually. She said Sunstar was not responsible and she would not give us any kind of discount. We will not recommend Sunstar to anyone or use Sunstar again after this experience.

Review 40:Not much. Decent breakfast. Good location, near the cable car to Mannlichen.

Review 41:The staff was really nice! They allow pets there and we brought our dog with us. When we checked into the room, we saw they had put out a water bowl for the dog which I thought was really nice. Breakfast was good, typical Swiss breakfast, and a couple of hot options. Location in the heart of Wengen was great.

Review 42:Bathrooms a bit on the small side but not a huge problem

Review 43:Excellent location, beautiful village Close to nature and beautiful hikes Very nice staff Excellent spa-area

Review 44:other than limited food in the buffet the first morning, it was a totally charming place to stay- highly recommended!!

Review 45:The hotel is located on the main street of Wengen which is like the Hobbit Shire, but for humans. Oliver the manager and Bridgette the front end staff were so helpful. The hotel is very comfortable with a beautiful pool, great breakfast buffet and overall charm. Highly recommend that you let the front staff know if you need to leave early in the morning for a tour etc, especially if there is a tour group staying at the hotel. The tour group ate all the food in the buffet within 15 minutes on the first day of our stay. The staff did their best to refill but it was a bit overwhelming. In speaking with Oliver, he suggested that you let the front staff know if you need to leave early and they will set-up a separate breakfast for you. Bridget was great in recommending buying the ticket to the Jungfrau train the day prior as it sells out quickly

Review 46:rooms and dining room need to be refreshed, swimming pool was cold, average breakfast menu

Review 47:wood decoration inside the rooms and the lounge, warm welcome from the staff, view on the mountains

Review 48:Pillows are very uncomfortable. They make you go down to the lobby and sign to get the free Wi-Fi, so remember to do this at check in. They didn't inform us during check in.

Review 49:The owner was very helpful and made a lot of effort to accommodate our requests.

Review 50:It's pretty expensive, particularly the food. We really wanted s pool for the kids but if we hadn't needed that I would say you can get a better deal elsewhere

Review 51:Service is good, pool was a nice perk.

Review 52:$180 for a single bed room Balcony tiny, Outdated hotel. I stayed 20years ago and not changed a bit. Steam room smelled really bad. Poolabout 62º. Asked to change room and no they didn't have any morerooms. You could do better for the price.

Review 53:Free mini bar which was refilled each day. Consisted of : 1 beer, 1coke, 2 waters. Not far from train station ( around the corner )

Review 54:We were very surprised to find that the breakfast tables were not free-seating. This table? "Sorry, reserved." That table? "Sorry, reserved." Our family were designated a specific table. We could not have our choice until we fuss about. We saw no good reason for the reservation as we sat and took our breakfast. Because of this policy our time at the breakfast table was unpleasant. Luckily Ms Maria from Spain was the only cheerful staff. In the hotel room I happened to just sit at the narrow edge of a metal frame coffee table with glass top. The glass readily broke below me. The specially fabricated glass could not be readily replaced. The whole table had to be replaced for Sfr 180. Looking at the new replacement, I found to my horror the glass piece measured 21" x 13" were being supported at the sunken corners by half square inch supports. The little glass corners would not bear much weight and it is absurd as a furniture in a hotel room. The glass top was not fully supported by the metal frame of the table but by four brittle corners. The glass top must be put on top on the metal frame for full and proper support. Noting this, in future there would be questions of hotel liability if there were to be any injury.

Review 55:We stayed in a great hotel in the Alps with alpine decor in room 306 overlooking the Lauterbrennen valley. The location is excellent, a short distance from the train station.

Review 56:We feel this is a typical 3 star chain hotel. After a long travel day,the first thing we were presented with at check in was the offer toinclude dinner in our stay at a discount only offered during check in.We felt like we were at a time share presentation! We'd booked asuperior mountain view double room, but I believe they had nicelyattempted to "upgrade" us. Our room had steep stairs to a loftwhere the bed was -- it was hot with no windows, & the bathroom wasdown on the main level. The main level had a large stain in the middleof the floor & the furniture was warn. The halls were noisy & wecould hear the conversation from the next balcony as clearly as if theywere in the room with us. I don't know how hotels are rated, but wedo not feel this is a 4 star or luxury hotel. It didn't compare toany of the other 4 star hotels we stayed in during our entire Europeanvacation. After 1 night we payed the cancellation penalty & moved tothe Beausite Park Hotel which is a true 4 or 4 &1/2 star hotel. We don't know how the two hotels could have the same rating -- thedifference between the two was like night & day.

Review 57:Location was convenient & buffet breakfast was very good.

Review 58:Specific room 111 allocated was smaller than others and we could have done with more cupboard space

Review 59:Smiling, friendly and helpful staff Excellent location Nice views from room Good meals.

Review 60:Nothing.

Review 61:Very comfortable base from which to go out skiing each day. Food and wines were excellent. Plentiful and varied breakfast buffet. Staff were attentive, friendly and very helpful. Good sized swimming pool in which to relax after skiing. Comfortable room with free drinks in mini-fridge. Daily Activities programme but entirely voluntary. Thoroughly recommended.

Review 62:Great location, quiet, beautiful view out the balcony. The room was large, sunny, and with beautiful duvets and a nice bathroom. We really liked it!

Review 63:Personalised attention to clients, very friendly and helpful reception, the room has all the facilities one needs and is blessed with lovely balcony overlooking the mountains. The location is fantastic, and Wengen is beautiful.

Review 64:I've visited the Sunstar hotel 3 times now. Its a charming Swiss hotel run by friendly genuine people. The breakfast is particularly good with fresh bread, high quality meats and cheeses and Swiss muesli. The pool and spa are also a great addition for after a long days skiing or walking. I have recommended it to friends and would again.
