Reviews for Pioneer Guest House
Review 1:We were a big group (kids & adults) we booked the apartment & various rooms & extra beds. Staff were great & rooms were great & location was central
Review 2:The walls of the rooms are so thick, you can ear the guys in the next rooms breathing or talking on the phone like they would be in your own room!!!
Review 3:The mood between all the renters, most of them are backpackers. The kitchen shared with free food.
Review 4:Difficult to use washing machines as had to wait untill hostel washing was done, which varied in time.
Review 5:Location close to Cow Bay, which is the nicest bit of Price Rupert. Very nicely maintained and furnished Had discount vouchers to location restaurants
Review 6:I appreciated the friendly welcome and uncomplicated check in. Also the other guests, mainly young people, were very pleasant and respectful. I enjoyed the peace and quiet, especially during the night, which guaranteed for a good night's sleep. Although there are no phones in the rooms, I was regularly, sometimes personally informed of messages waiting for me. This I especially appreciated. The service and care were very personal.
Review 7:It is complicated for everyone arriving and leaving from the Prince Rupert airport, no matter where you are staying. If you are travelling from out of town, get instructions so it won't be a surprise.
Review 8:The room was clean and comfortable. I arrived late. THe instructions for check in were in the mailbox by the front door, and we're clear and easy to follow. I left early, so didn't spend much time in the guest house.
Review 9:We like the variety of accommodations at the Guest House and that there was a common kitchen/dining area where you could visit with other travelers. Our separate apartment was gorgeous.
Review 10:A family kept their door open and for a couple of hours spoke loudly--kids were loud as well as parents. It was fairly early (between 6pm and 9pm) but I had been up since 5am that day. Perhaps with the long list of prohibitions there should be a noise rule!
Review 11:The bathroom and bedroom were clean.
Review 12:Very noisy at night outside hostel. Otherwise, not noisy in the hostel itself. Located on busy road with loud traffic noise from the nightlife/bar on the wharf on the Wednesday night we stayed there.
Review 13:Location, location, location - close to shopping and very walkable to most activities. Located near eateries. Love that there is a wonderful little yarn store in the hostel. Friendly staff. Very clean an comfortable overall.
Review 14:Very friendly accommodating staff. We had the 2 bdrm apt and it work very well for our family. We only spent 1 night but would have enjoyed several days in this suite.
Review 15:This property has heritage charm and is very affordable. I chose a room with shared bath... Very clean and always one available. The staff is friendly, the kitchen is well organized and the location is convenient. Much to recommend.
Review 16:In this summer's extraordinary hot spell, lack of AC was uncomfortable, but good for "the environment".
Review 17:The Guest House is for travelers like us - on a tight budget but seeking comfort- and for those willing to share their room & bathroom. Great company & atmosphere, staff, and all. Communal Kitchen is very well organized; they provide freezer , refrigerator, stove, sink, and tables; and coffee etc. You supply all food, cook it yourself, etc. Sweet decor.
Review 18:Nothing.
Review 19:Free transfer from the VIA rail station by v. Friendly member of staff despite train being late. Access to all facilities including hostel kitchen and dining areas. Spacious and comfortable en-suite room with modern bathroom.
Review 20:About a fifteen dollar cab fare from train/ferry station, but once you're here, you don't need a car, and can walk to most places in town in ten minutes.
Review 21:Nice people and facility. The ensuite rooms are downstairs, separated from the rest by another door. Very nice, though smallish room. Great shower, all exceptionally clean. Our ensuite room faced the quiet street, the other the garden. Nicely, and recently, updated historic property with modern touches, and very accomodating reception staff. Shaqred kitchen down the hall if you like, for making your own tea or breakfast, etc. Upstairs are shared bath/hostel rooms. Don't let the "backpacker" of the old name scare you away. This is a very, very nice place, with a great, walkable location.
Review 22:A place with character, well kept and in a very good location, near cow bay. The kitchen setup was excellent for multiple users of kitchen space and there was industrial size frig facilities and gas cooktop for those who wished to do their own meals. A great place for those not looking for sterile, private luxury, but like to chat with other travellers if they wish while still have good quality and price
Review 23:Private en suite double could be more comfortable - mattress a bit thin, room quite hot (a fan would help), curtains a challenge to block light - but still good value.
Review 24:Supplied shuttle connection with ferry port for arrival. Good communal spaces and friendly, helpful staff.
Review 25:While the room was a bit small, it was cozy.
Review 26:Everything was clean and well maintained and the staff were very helpful. They even picked us up at the train station and took us to the facility free of charge.
Review 27:The room heating system seems to be a mystery to guest and staff alike.probably due to complexity of the thermostat. Staff will happily provide an excellent portable heater if that is what it takes.
Review 28:I booked a private bath because that is just the way I am so I don't know what sharing is like. The words backpackers and hostel are used in describing this place. They are not false but do not do it justice.
Review 29:I stayed in Room 3 (with ensuite washroom/shower) which was very comfortable. The shower head was mounted high, so you'd likely need to be taller than 6'5" before needing to duck.
Review 30:too many rules about room and signs all over the place about the rules; no extended family allowed to visit. We were told to be quiet at 9:00 pm although people were up and making noise in the kitchen (right behind us) at 5:30 am. Contradictory standards.
Review 31:allowed pets
Review 32:I didn't know that it was a HI Hostel. I didn't know that there are also Dorm bed available and therefore I took a bed for 70 Dollars. I felt really decieved i could have saved so much money! The owner should put this information on the website!
Review 33:The Pioneer guest house is a nice and clean Hostel. I just stayed one night and arrived late and left early.
Review 34:Nothing; guest house was a pleasant surprise!
Review 35:Great location, short (walking) distance from good coffee and nice restaurants (available with discount from guesthouse), nice double room (simple but clean) with en suite well appointed bathroom. Late arrival with ferry no problem: they pick you up or the key is waiting for you inside. Would come again!
Review 36:We only stayed one night between ferries from Haida Gwaii and Port Renfrew, but had a pleasant stay. We had a double room on the top floor with a shared bathroom just outside, both of which were clean. It located within easy walking distance of Cow Bay which is where all the interesting things in Prince Rupert are, and they offer free transfer to and from ferry terminal, which, although not available 24 hours, is very useful as the terminal is definitely not walking distance away
Review 37:My room was at street level on the front of the house and had four really big windows which was great for light but not for privacy from the street as the hotel is situated on a fairly busy street.
Review 38:I arrived hours before i could check in and the staff gave me towels, stored my bags and let me take a shower before even giving them a dime! Amazing, friendly service. Fantastic facilities, clean, bright, comfortable and private. Great kitchen and tons of space to just hang out. I loved this place.
Review 39:We stayed in a private room with bathroom. There were no complaints about anything!
Review 40:The group of girls running the place were welcoming, informative, accommodating! The facility was top notch. We usually don't stay in places that are of a "hostel" formate but we'd stay here again for sure. Was WAY better than many of the hotels we've stayed in and at a much great cost.
Review 41:Not just this hotel but many others as well only provide quilts or duvets and no blanket. If you're not used to them, especially in the summer it can make for a very unpleasant night's sleep. Bigger hotels will usually have a blanket but can be difficult in smaller places due to cost etc.
Review 42:Cute little place, very clean and friendly staff. Short walk to quite a few restaurants and uptown was close as well. Staff was in touch prior to visit to confirm everything to organise transfer from ferry.
Review 43:Room was a bit small but comfortable. No air conditioning, but still not a problem. Open window provided a cool ocean breeze.
Review 44:We found the rooms very clean, and well situated for a restful sleep on our layover to catch the ferrie to Queen Charlotte city. Close in for a shorline walk and restaurants and ammenities. Staff was very friendly and competent. We would love to stay again when in Rupert.
Review 45:Lines in front of the bathroom in the evening and morning, as a converted residential building there are not enough facilities.
Review 46:Friendly and clean hostel, ideal place to land after ferry crossing from Port Hardy. Beautiful old house. Overflow-Camping in the garden if full. shuttle service to/from ferry Good information about tours/todos/hiking in the lobby
Review 47:Our room was clean and nicely updated. We had a TV and bathroom. Staff was very friendly, and the location is within walking to most things and the bus is easy to the rest.
Review 48:Not much. The rooms were very small, with paper thin walls, which you can hear people in the next room talking. The community bathrooms were very small, and its questionable regarding the cleanliness of that type of sharing of bodily fluids. For the price that they charge for a hostel, you would be better of to get a budget hotel room, at least you will have privacy, and know that the bathroom that you use has been cleaned.
Review 49:Location. Near the Ferry Terminal.
Review 50:Ensuite room very comfortable, helpful staff rang for morning taxi to ferry and next accommodation , pick up from late arriving train excellent, good kitchen, great location 5 min walk to restaurants at Cow Bay and 5 min to shops. We were there for a fishing charter with Ted Frolich- great fishing!!
Review 51:Noise: downstairs private room was next to apartment, only separated by a thin door. I think the management is going to fix it, though.
Review 52:Sfaff, building, location
Review 53:Friendliness of the staff, easy going atmosphere, walking distance to many tourist sites, clean, relaxing, fire site, patio and picnic table. We will go back.
Review 54:Availability of laundry facilities, Staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 55:We stayed in the apartment. Very clean, 2 floors, 2 bedrooms and a kitchen, large enough to spread out with our two kids. Great place!
Review 56:Clean if a little cramped in a nicer part of town.
Review 57:the only thing that annoyedme was lack of space in our room.
Review 58:lovely bright warm and friendly. Left keys out for our late arrival.
Review 59:Double roms are very small
Review 60:Great location to town and all the activites from cow bay
Review 61:Price
Review 62:Great hostel with private rooms.Really friendly staff
Review 63:Location was excellent for walking around the town. Place very clean and quiet. They pick up from ferry or airport. Staff very helpful.
Review 64:Our welcome was unfriendly. The room was very cramped; no where to put the luggage.
Review 65:Seemed to be a reasonable prince.
Review 66:Double rooms are very small for 2 people with 2 backpaks avoid rm 15
Review 67:Very clean and newly renovated bathrooms and kitchen
Review 68:a clean economical place, suitable for families too

Review 84:Bed was quite uncomfortable and pillows are extremely flat.
Review 85:Staff was friendly and helpful
Review 86:A bit noisy on the road side flat pillows, my personal pet peeve
Review 87:Location, close to facilities comfy bed
Review 88:Our beds were the most comfortable I've ever slept in! And the decor was awesome..it felt like a home away from home!
Review 89:Nothing
Review 90:Location, amenities, bed, deer outside our window
Review 91:We came in on the late ferry (2am) and staff was very accommodating about access to our room.
Review 92:None
Review 93:Super cozy and cute. Had a great time.
Review 94:B&B atmosphere
Review 95:Cheap and cheerful. Very helpful staff.
Review 96:Quick to check in, easy to find, very comfortable and clean.
Review 97:Part of Cow Bay! Newly renovated! Just all over great!
Review 98:the only thing was the size of the room but we managed.
Review 99:it was super organized and everyone was very helpful. loved the fire.
Review 100:Lumpy mattress and extremely warm room.
Review 101:The location
Review 102:Everything, the staff, location, great kitchen
Review 103:Other guest that left dirty dishes and clean dishes when instructions clearly state to wash, dry and put away when done.
Review 104:Great location, clean, comfortable, friendly staff and laundry. Common area for cooking and eating nicely furnished.
Review 105:Very amenable staff, leaving clear instructions on finding key to enter accommodation so late out of hours (2.00am!!). The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. It is a shame that I didn't have chance to stay longer and saviour the atmosphere. Close to Cow Bay with 10% discount with some of the local business. Very helpful prior to visit regarding free shuttlebus, train delays and out of hours entry. Also very helpful with transfer to airport (as there was little prior information available). Would definitely recommend this to future visitors to Prince Rupert.
Review 106:Very friendly staff, great location, minutes from a trendy shopping area called Cow Bay. They have a deal with some local businesses in Cow Bay where patrons of the Pioneer Backpackers Inn receive 10% discount! Clean, friendly, and accommodating to people catching ferries.
Review 107:this is a hostel. I should have known but didn't. Also, it doesn't serve breakfst and several other in Prince Rupert do offer a better value for money, at least for the solo traveller..
Review 108:friendly staff
Review 109:Book if you want an ensuite room as it is a backpackers hostel.
Review 110:Good value for money. Friendly helpful staff. Convenient for downtown shops and restaurants.
Review 111:rooms in older building, nice and clean but sound from other guests invasive but to be expected in an older building, not a big problem 'tho
Review 112:clean, central, good value
Review 113:older building so you can hear your neighbors.
Review 114:location in cow bay, cheap alternative to expensive hotels around the city. awesome staff, forgot my charger and christine drove to meet me seconds before the bus shuttle left for the airport.
