Situated in Nungwi at the Northern tip of Zanzibar, Highland Bungalows is a short stroll from the beach. The guest house offers a restaurant and open-plan bar.
The African-themed rooms are housed in thatched bungalows. Each has a bathroom with shower and the beds are draped with a mosquito net.
Local and International dishes can be ordered at the restaurant. Cocktails and drinks can be enjoyed at the bar, which also hosts regular live music events and evening entertainment.

Review 1：Where to start? Location - Highland Bungalows (HB) is situated 5 min from the beautiful white sand/turquoise water beaches of Nungwi. It is located on a street that truly immerses you in the Zanzibari/Swahili culture, greeted with friendly smiles from local fruit/mitzhaki vendors and talkative Masai. Accommodation - the rooms are immaculately clean, comfortable and serviced daily by friendly staff. It is everything that you need for a relaxing and adventurous holiday. We specifically enjoyed returning from a hot day on the beach, relaxing in the lush and cool courtyard or our very own balcony. Atmosphere - What really makes this place something special is it's unique atmosphere which immerses you in the culture and somehow makes you feel at home on holiday. Their restaurant serves an array of delicious local dishes until midnight - at extremely affordable (local) prices. Without a doubt HB's food is of a much higher quality compared to many of the restaurants on the beach. To add to this it's "watering hole" provides a really nice local vibe with a friendly barman - James! Make sure you have a drink or something to eat on their top deck. Most importantly, Albert and Britta are the perfect hosts! Providing advice on tours, bicycle rentals and general info on the island. They blew us away with their overall hospitality and warmth. They truly added to what made a beautiful holiday even more incredible. We highly recommend Highland Bungalows to any type of traveller - families, young or old couples, who are in search for a comfortable, affordable and perfect place to stay! Thank you to Albert, Britta, James, Ryan and the rest of the friendly staff! We will defiantly be back! Mr Barry & Lauren :)

Review 2：Menu could do with a bit more to offer tourists.

Review 3：Britta and Albert the owners are two of the nicest hosts I have ever met. Nothing is too much trouble. Nice to mix with locals, staff on the whole are good but need to practice English a little more. Already planning to return next year and cannot wait.

Review 4：This isn't the hotel's issue, but in the neighbourhood the amount of trash on the ground everywhere is appalling. I would think that with all of the fancy hotels and restaurants around they would work together to try to clean it up and work with the community to create a nicer environment, not just for tourists, for everyone living there. The beach itself is fine though, this is more a general comment.

Review 5：Staff were very nice. Food was very cheap and decent. Decent location, less than 10 minute walk to the beach and 5 minute walk to where the dalla dalla drops you off.

Review 7：The best things is that it is place that is also frequented by locals. All very harmonious and cool. I met many people and was shown the inner village and its places. The food is tremendous, go there even if you are not staying over. All super fresh and locally prices.

Review 10：If you return from the beach or beach side restaurants after dark you will need a good torch and also know where to leave the beach to pick up the road. It is a 10 - 15 minute walk. Note - Brita will collect you in her car if you require it.

Review 11：Brita is a very friendly and welcoming hostess. She is most helpful with advice. Our room was spacious and very clean. Good shower with ample hot water. Nice spacious garden.

Review 13：The owners are great people, very helpful. The rooms are spacious and very clean, great value for the money you spend. There is a large restaurant and bar attached to the accommodation with tasteful and cheap food. The only drawback of this place is the location a bit far away from the see, but for the price you pay, no one can complain.

Review 14：It is perfect destination for budget travellers. The rooms are simple and cosy, very clean, hot water. Nice backyard. The beach is only 5-7 minutes walking. No problem also walking at night. Friendly staff. They have really, really good food and cheap prices. Thanks Britta and Albert, it was pleasure meeting you both. You are the best :)

Review 19：The only problem is that there is not public illumination in the roads so we didn't feel enough safe to get seafront's pubs and restaurant during the nightime. Wi-fi does not work very welll...but ,Hey guy, never forget you are in Africa

Review 20：Highland Bungalow is really the perfect destination for budget travellers in Nungwi. The rooms are simple but very,very clean and a nice private bath with hot water is waiting for you. The beaches are only 5 minutes walking (sorry but you cannot ask for a frontsea view in a budget accomodation!!!).The whole staff and the owners Britta and Albert are very helpfully!! Facilities are good.There is a good restaurant (Merci Alain for your chicken dishes!) with affordable prices and a bar. You cannot desire a better accomodation

Review 21：The way to the beach is not far, but during the night you can have some problems to come back. There's no light on the street.

Review 23：One night there was a party, the music was so loud that the bed shaked on the beats. It is only ones a week, on sunday. The thing was that they didn't warned us and we had arranged an early trip the next morning. After midnight we went saying something and the shut the music down.

Review 27：Whilst very quiet during the day, the bar at night is busy. Very cheap drinks (the cheapest I saw in Nungwi). A bit of noise from the bar and music, but not too bad.

Review 28：The owners Albert and Britta were very warm and welcoming. Albert even gave me a lift into Stone Town to catch my return flight! The staff were all very nice. Room was clean, spacious, decently close to beach. Breakfast in the morning was great: fresh fruit, omelette, toast etc.

Review 34：The friendliness of the staff and the owners. Brita and Albert are lovely people. They add a lot to the stay. Brita drove me to the Turtle Sanctuary. And the day I left she had to go to Stone Town so she offered me a lift. They're super generous.

Review 35：There was a big party going on in the bar ntil 4.30 in the morning so I had no sleep, the bed wasnt very comfy, and there was no wifi. When i arrived there was no staff around because they had all been drinking too mch the night before- there is no obvious reception and it isnt 24hours. I wouldn't pay 25 dollars for the experience

Review 37：We liked that the accommodation was not on the beach front stuck between all the party type hotels. Nice and quiet and actually an easy walk to the beach if we had wished. Britta bends over backwards to help. She even drove us around town and we noticed she was there all the time taking care of all her other guests as well. She is constantly available and ready to sort out anything you may need. Exceptionally clean and nice property with excellent meals at local prices to boot. We did not bother to go out to eat. The bedrooms/bathrooms are all very clean with good beds and facilities that work.

Review 39：Booking. com misinformed. Highland is not placed where it is showed, neither by booking nor at the Highlands homepage.I was told that more times a week there are live music and a terrasse where you watch the sunset. It is not happening during low season. As you have a 7 min walk to the beach and dont go alone after sunset, the reasons I choose Highland was the music and sunset terrasse which unfortunately wasn`t there. Please describe properly what you can expect. Misinformation doesn`t make happy customers. Britta and Albert were very nice and helpfull, and Jeff, the Cook were the greatest help to me

Review 40：I liked the area. It was cosy and clean. The rooms were Ok for the Price. Food very nice and cheap, and the breakfast excellent.

Review 41：It is quite a walk (10-15 min) from the beach - just keep it in mind to not be disappointing. Booking site has incorrect location on the map (just pointing at the Nungwi), you can find it on Google maps though - or follow the poster sign from the main road and go down to Baobab Resort - you would see Highland on your way.

Review 42：I selected this place because of the price - didn't want to spend a lot for the room as I was travelling alone. The owners and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was great. The bar at the Bungalows was cheap and local people were coming there too. There are a lot of local bars around too.

Review 48：More than you can expect for that price, the bungalows are clean, comfortable, with everything you need if you're not looking for the fancy stuff. Basic but well-working and clean sanitary (yes slightly salty water but i think more often in zanzibar places), fan, A-C (didn't check if t works), wifi, a bar and restaurant with simple yet very taste and affordable food. An not to forget: very friendly staff that can help you And are flexible (eg late checkout, leave bagage)

Review 59：This hotel is about 7 minutes walk from the beach so not ideal if you want a beachside place. However it is well run, efficient and clean. The food is excellent and good value. The staff are friendly and the owners are very helpful Britta the owner even took us along the coast to our next hotel. I would definitely recommend the Highland.

Review 61：A perfect place for everybody who wants to feel a bit of local life. It's located ca. 5 minutes walk from the beach. Not so much touristic area. There is a nice bar with DJ every evening where you can spent time with local people. Prices are more than half cheaper from those in bars on the beach.The room was clean and really good standard taking into consideration the price we paid. Very nice and helpful owners. I honestly recomend thsi place!

Review 63：Clean (it´s very important in Zanzibar) and comfortable place. Hot water in a shower. Good breakfast, the best what I tried in Zanzibar and just for 5000 (6000 with sausage). Britta (the owner) is very talkative and brings guests to a bitch with a car for show the way. Adviced this place to my friends (couple), they liked it a lot and said what want spend there rest of the vacations.

Review 67：Pretty close to the beach (about a 7 minute walk). I loved the company of Breta and Albert (the owners) who went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. They ferried us around and answered all our questions patiently. They recommended the right places to eat at and visit. I had messed up my booking dates but they were kind enough to accommodate us. They are amazing hosts and you become family. The restaurant serves great local food and the beer is super cheap. The place itself is built on a massive property. The bigger rooms are nice and airy.

The bungalow Is located between the village and the beach, so you're far away from te beach croud in the evening if you like. You also can party if you like. Review 69：Hello, I stayed in the Highland Bungalows for a few days. It’s a good room, bed and bath, being cleaned every day. The owners (Britta, a German, & Albert, a Tanzanian) are very friendly and open to show a few places over there. They also have the Highland Bar & Restaurant in the same place and there will always be friendly & open-minded locals having drinks or food – I liked that! The breakfast (fruits, juice, coffee/tea, eggs, bread, marmalade) and also the local food you can get there was ok! You’ve got a few shops directly next to this place to buy a few basic things you may need. To get to the beach, you need to walk a bit, approx. 7-8 minutes, to pass a few bars & the resorts but it’s beautiful there!
