Reviews for Grand Hotel Riga

Review 1:Well renovated hotel from communist times - some of the old art can still be seen. Otherwise great and comfortable rooms without any of the communist limitations ;) Top location - 5 min on foot to the central square of the city. Great view over the Danube - ask for a west-facing room and enjoy the sunset. The Panorama restaurant is kind of pricey for the region but totally worth it.

Review 2:Breakfast could be better.

Review 3:We booked standart rooms but they upgraded us to executive ones, which were amazing and very clean. Lobby was also beautiful. Staff was polite and friendly.

Review 4:We thought the breakfast could have had more hot selections.

Review 5:Friendly and helpful staff. The cleaning staff were very nice to our wee boy. The room's view over the Danube was excellent.

Review 6:There was no hot water available in the bathroom and the very smart shower needed servicing and an explanatory leaflet on how to use it safely - exacerbated by no hot water even after 15 minutes of running bath water. Grumpy check out lady and no real concern about lack of hot water and full price charged still - not good customer relations !

Review 7:Hotel position and impressive entrance area and very helpful check in staff. Smart bathroom in free upgrade room.

Review 8:Breakfast is medium cheap and coffee is bad.

Review 9:they gave me executive room instead of a normal one. The room was amazing and had a wonderul view on Danub. Spa is cheap and staff is prepared.

Review 10:Sound-proofing between rooms could be better. The room card key gets demagnetized by being near mobile phones.

Review 11:One of the best rooms I've ever stayed in: very spacious, excellently furnished, impeccable cleaning, and with an awesome view of sunsets over the river Danube. The hotel staff was simply wonderful: kind, attentive, service-minded, and with a very positive attitude. Easy walking distance to the beautifully restored city centre and also to the river walk along the Danube. The restaurants in the hotel were all excellent.

Review 12:I was quoted £62 when I made booking but when I get my bank statement I find I've been charged £70 plus £3.09 for paying with my card - I feel conned!

Review 13:Location

Review 14:Shower didn't drain and leaked everywhere. Phone did not work. Aircon did not work. Wifi took a day to be rebooted.

Review 15:Great restaurant and lovely view.

Review 16:I booked just a simple room for one night stay, and upon arrival, my room was upgraded to executive room because they had it available, with no extra charges. Staff was excellent, breakfast was good and view was fantastic. Ruse is off the beaten path, but should be considered for unusual travel tourism. I would like to stay there again. This hotel is in process of slow upgrading from socialist type hotel to new and modern and comfortable higher class hotel. However, I'd like to see some of socialist style decorations and furniture to stay there or leave few rooms as they were, as a couriosity and memento of hotel's history. (food for thought for the management) Highly recommended

Review 17:The hotel is dated and needs major renos. Just a few levels(4 or 5 out of 16 are updated) The elevators are very old style. The light sensors are very annoying as they take a while engage. We had a good time here though!

Review 18:Location was great and free parking was excellent idea. Although it filled up pretty quickly on two occasions and we had to park on the streets. The staff was excellent and very helpful. The restaurants were very good and convenient. Breakfast was great and had good variety.

Review 19:No bad experiences with the property or staff.

Review 20:Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Great breakfast and very good penthouse restaurant. Just a short walk to the town center walking street and the sites. My room was right over the Danube.

Review 21:You have to accept some parts of the hotel have not really been renovated much, and the old 'communist' architectural influence is a bit evident, but not enough to spoil the overall experience.

Review 22:Staff were all very professional, polite and accommodating.Kettle and coffee in the room, fresh fruit too.comfortable bed.Panorama restaurant very good.

Review 23:The food in the restaurant (traditional) both for dinner and breakfast was adequate but not great. The lack of sealant between the bath and the wall meant a shower resulted in a total flood of the bathroom floor. Drinks were not replenished in the room's bar

Review 24:Good location near town centre and overlooking the Danube. Great value for money.

Review 25:A mediocre breakfast without - the first time ever - sweet things for bread (no honey, chocolate, marmalade or jam). It rained non-stop during our stay….

Review 26:Good location, 10 minutes on foot to the center and main (shopping) street. Nice views. Large free parking. A large suite as upgrade, excellent beds, modern decorated. Quiet rooms (no traffic/neighbours sound). Good free wifi.

Review 27:very nice spacious room, splendid view to the Danube river, good food and beverages at the "mehana" restaurant; efficient stuff; 10 minutes walk to center of the city

Review 28:This hotel really was a good find. The room was great having been upgraded to the 10th floor and although the modern design would not be to everyone's taste it certainly puts a smile on your face. The staff were very good and very friendly despite the fact that they must see a lot of businessmen and groups come in there. I ate at the Taverna in the evening expecting it to be poor as I was only one of about five people in there. The food was excellent and no more then you pay in a local restaurant. They really did excel here. I would happily stay longer as this is a lovely town with many water features and nicely laid out gardens and some beautiful architecture. I don't think it gets its fair share of tourists.

Review 29:Towels smelled slightly like ash trays and shower/sink drained very slowly. Room was 27.5 °C and no air condition available during our stay/season(was very uncomfortable temperature). Stinkbug season so opening windows was out of the question-they were everywhere inside the room and house cleaning did not vacuum the floor until we requested it the next day.

Review 30:Staff were excellent. They were responsive and courteous.

Review 31:One waitress in the Garden restaurant on the afternoon of our arrival needs more customer service training. I think she completely lost her voice!!!!

Review 32:We were upgraded to an apartment which was excellent and we will consider booking this room in future if available.

Review 33:This hotel has a view over the Danube. The room was really nice and clean. The receptionist was kind enough to give us a free upgrade to an executive room.

Review 34:Facilities on the M floor could be renovated. Summer garden waitress was not very professional. Overall NO PROBLEMS!

Review 35:Very good hotel management! Excellent hotel services. They gave me a free update to a better room, which was very good. Compliment fruit and water. Nice touch! Great view, convenient location. I WOULD DEFINETELY RECOMMEND

Review 36:We only stayed one night in deluxe room and did not have breakfast. Couldn't complain about anything. Very comfortable, modern and quite with great via of river. Easy walk into town square. Highly recmmend

Review 37:Only problem we experienced was that the hot water didn't seem to come on. They upgraded us to a suite with a beautiful jetted tub, but we couldn't take advantage with no hot water.

Review 38:Ideal loocation, and I liked the idea of all rooms facing the river. We were catching a river cruise the next day, and we could see our boat from our window. Boarding was just an easy walk down the hill.

Review 39:The breakfast could be improved (fresh products should be used, for example fresh fruits instead of canned fruits, and fresh orange juice). The eggs were not that tasteful either.

Review 40:The staff was very welcoming and helpful. We got upgraded to a better room when we arrived. The view on the Danube was amazing and the room clean and comfortable. AC in the room as well as Wifi in the whole hotel. Very well located, closed to the town center by feet.

Review 41:Wifi wasn't working for about 24 hours and the actual building is a bit ugly from the outside

Review 42:Free upgrade to executive room and views of the Danube

Review 43:None

Review 44:The rooms were very clean and had all modern equipment. The restaurant Panorama is top class, we had meal and the service and food was excellent. Didn't expect to have such great service and food, it was amazing experience and well recommended for a visit.

Review 45:Shower in room was cumbersome and water not hot, needs attention - room 701 Breakfast juices were squash not juice which was disappointing

Review 46:Good size bedroom and bed, pleasant gardens and reception area, helpful staff.

Review 47:This is a marvellous hotel; especially if you like the charm of (modernized) architecture from the socialistic period, nevertheless there is some space for improvement, e.g. the breakfast: coffee comes from a nonprofessional machine (labelled only in Bulgarian), for cappuccino from the bar you have to pay extra and unfortunately the rolls were mildewed. However you can sit on the terrace outside and enjoy a wonderful view on the Danube, which lets forget you nearly everything. The wellness shower in the suite didn’t work well and was leaky (bathroom wet); the wellness tube didn’t work at all.

Review 48:We stayed in a suite on the 9th floor, where you have a wonderful view! We enjoyed the stay in this modernized, nice furnished suite with a very comfortable bed very much! There also was a plate with fresh fruit (nice welcome!). For the experience we would recommend to stay in this hotel, if you come along Ruse.

Review 49:The room is renovated, but it already needs small repairs. Water was not draining down from the sink and from the bath cabin. Breakfast was not fresh enough.

Review 50:Excellent service from staff very very friendly and helpful at all time when we arrived we got a free upgrade. Restaurant staff very helpful and pleasant. Would definitely stay again.

Review 51:We stayed one night in this hotel. It was great, we booked one comfort room, but we recived an upgrade in the same price. In the room we were pleasantly surprised to find fresh fruit and one bottle of still water. Breakfast was very very good. In the evening we spent time in the garden restaurant. Thank you, Grand Hotel Riga!

Review 52:The spa needs updating. The whirpool bath was out of order and the gym was cramped. The breakfast was not good quality.

Review 53:The staff were wonderful and went above and beyond for us. They upgraded our room without asking to an executive room and the views of the river were amazing. The location was excellent, close to the main pedestrian street with numerous shops, restaurants and bars. Ruse is a lovely city with many beautiful fountains that are lit up at night.

Review 54:Our only dislike was that the lift compartment comes with no door (only the door to the floor you are on)- so you can see the floors rushing by. Not a problem for me but my wife who has a fear of lifts was not a happy bunny and we had to use them as we were on the 10th floor!

Review 55:Very helpful staff, especially on reception. Had a free upgrade to our room, which was very clean and comfortable. The beds were probably the most comfortable we have experienced in a hotel. Excellent restaurants and breakfast bar. Very close (walking distance) to the beautiful town centre, park and river. Lovely river views from the room and the balcony.

Review 56:Nothing really to complain about. One of the four windows would have enjoyed a cleaning from the outside.

Review 57:The executive room was great, with a lot of space (we were upgraded for free). Huge bathroom, fresh fruits, water and chocolates were complementary upon arrival. The view from the 10th floor on the Danube was stunning. Both Panorama restaurant and the garden Terrace have great food.

Review 58:The personal in garden restaurant was not too professional.

Review 59:The hotel offered me luxury room for the price of comfort one and all the stuff was very nice.

Review 60:It has to be said that even when I was having problems I was laughing due to the way the staff dealt with them. They were so friendly.. One night I came back to find the room not cleaned, but it was seen to immediately. The dinner at night the potatoes were cold, but that was ok because of the sheer sense of fun and party spirit in the hotel restaurant with everyone dancing. In the breakfast the hot food was cold but that was offset by the staff doing all the running around to provide me breakfast even making me toast, rather than me doing it. I had booked for a massage but when I turned up for he time thay had rearranged for me, they then said they were busy - but i then got glass of wine instead in theit lovely garden bar.

Review 61:I really enjoyed this hotel and yet in certain regards it was comical. The best thing about the hotel are the staff who gave me a free upgrade to a big suite. The facilities in this room were great. This was before the little problems but they were so good with them and doing extra things. I think this was my favourite hotel of the trip. And great views of the Danube.

Review 62:SPA isn't that good. Elevators were quite busy (one of three was out of order). Receptionists were somehow slow (had to wait on a queue).

Review 63:Excellent rooms with view to the river and city, good hotel facilities and perfect location.

Review 64:Bathroom facilities, though new and clean look not always fit together well. Breakfast is generally good, so drinks are unfortunately big disappointment. Still - if you ask - they will bring you decent espresso from nearby cafe for free.

Review 65:You get nice panoramic view over Danube from any room. Staff is most friendly and helpful. There are complimentary fruits and sweets in the room on top of everything you will expect in 4-star hotel.

Review 66:Breakfast was good but some items were depleted before breakfast time finished.

Review 67:Location is excellent... overlooking the Danube and next to Freedom Square in the heart of Ruse. Rooms are fabulous and staff are wonderful.

Review 68:I asked double bed room. However I stayde two single beds room.

Review 69:I enjoyed panorama from my room(1004). Room and bath tub were clean and parking was free.

Review 70:Hotel steam room not working. Sauna not very hot and the jaccussi was not working.

Review 71:Staff excellent. Food in panorama resteraunt excellent. I have had massages all over the world. The lady in the hotel is the best todate. Recommended. Even went back for a second time. Prices also excellent. All round would go back again and again. I forgot to mention my room upgrade free of charge and the rooms where great

Review 72:small spa center with old facilities, no public transportation nearby, dark street from the city center back to hotel.

Review 73:polite staff, the Danube river view from the room ,comfortable room, complimentary water and fruit.

Review 74:Nothing

Review 75:Stayed for two times, each time room was upgraded to higher level for free. renovated rooms where we stayed were clean, comfortable and convenient. Very friendly staff. beautiful restaurant "Panorama". reach menu and tasty dishes. value for money. Excellent A/Con. really enjoyed. beautiful view from the room, very quiet even with open windows

Review 76:I've been upgraded to executive room! The room was spacious, very clean and comfortable. Great view facing Danube river. All the staffs also very friendly and helpful

Review 77:One of the worst breakfast I've ever eaten in any hotel. The hotel has been renovated from the Soviet-era building, therefore the SPA section is located in the former living section at the second floor and was by our visit time effectively closed.

Review 78:Panoramic view, spacious and clean room, friendly staff, central location close to the central square. Our room was upgraded for free to the executive suite.

Review 79:The stuff dont speak english so good but you can find some who can understand you :) Jacuzzi not working. At 2AM somebody knock in the walls ... I think some neighbors who were in a not soundproof room...because we was laughing...so some of the rooms have thin walls

Review 80:The executive rooms are amazing...like in the pictures and all its functional. The walls - at least for us was soundproofing and the view from 10 floor its nice The breakfast was ok...i saw better but worse too. The parking is huge and safe

Review 81:It is not that I did not like it, but I have used better more rigid mattresses for the bed.

Review 82:I liked location, staff, spacious room, bathroom, breakfast, parking

Review 83:It's the third time we stayed here and again our expectations were exceeded - this time we got the Executive Suite as a loyalty benefit. Beds are amazing. If you have time try the spa.

Review 84:They have upgraded my booking with a superior room that had just been renovated! The room was really comfy and well designed with a gorgeous view over the Danube!

Review 85:Drains in the bathroom were overflowing when we took shower and seal around bath tube was also damaged creating extra water spill on the floor. Staff need to check the facility and correct the damages before accommodating the guests.

Review 86:Kind and very nice service staff. We received free of charge upgrade to executive double room.

Review 87:We almost missed our flight because the Manageress couldnt add up my sisters mini bar bill, she then sent someone upto the rooms to ensure what we were paying was all we had taken! I (the tips we left for cleaning staff was more than both our bills). This was our 2nd encounter with her, on the first occassion we had taken the lift to the wrong floor, as I walked out, she almost bodily pushed me back in. Finally, for a supposedly 4* hotel, the breakfast was awful! Diluting juice rather than fresh and disgusting cheap coffee (1st time in Bulgaria that we didnt have decent coffee, had raved to my friends before going about fab Bulgarian coffee)

Review 88:The view, both restaurants but especially the Panorama! PaveL our waiter was a true star!

Review 89:The hotel was clean and modern, the staff was helpful and polite, the wifi was fast, the breakfast was good with a large selection. I would equate this to a Hilton or Westin Hotel in America - very good standards, great value for the price! Make sure you get an "Exexutive" room. These rooms have been recently renovated and are excellent. I think most of the lower reviews on this site are from people who got the cheapest rooms in the older part of the hotel. We would definitely stay here again!

Review 90:Room was recently renovated but already starting to look worn (traces on the carpet, dust in the corners). Very attractive bathroom but not well designed - the water ran out under the shower doors and soaked the whole floor.

Review 91:Big, modern room; great view of the Danube; very friendly staff

Review 92:Everything was fine. Perfect location, friendly staff and our reservation was upgraded to exclusive dbl room for free which was very kindly. i would stay again here and i will do recommend it!

Review 93:Although the hotel does not look very inviting from outside, you will be surprised from the quality of service, rooms, food in the Taverna and value for money. Great location, great river view, free parking and wifi, good breakfast. I often visit Ruse and usually choose the Riga Hotel for my stay.

Review 94:- Drain in the bathroom floor in some of the rooms doesn't work well and may flood the bathroom while one's taking a shower.

Review 95:- There is a parking space, free of charge - WiFi works great - Staff is very welcoming and helpful - Rooms (the renovated ones) are very comfortable - Breakfast is good

Review 96:I only wish I had more time to spend there

Review 97:I had a reservation for an executiove room, but was immediately upgraded to an executive appartment. Firnished in a modern style, overlooking the river, the apartment was a great surprise, together with the small complimenatry treat, SUPER comfy beds and exuberance of available linen. Definitely a hotel to go back to. I already recommeneded it to all my colleagues in the office.

Review 98:Wifi was poor, quality of breakfast was poor, spa-facilities were not available.

Review 99:Very nice and spacious room, very good bed, very clean, good staff at the reception, excellent restaurant (Panorama restaurant) with a very professional staff, fitnessfacilities

Review 100:Not much, really, just a few small caveats: - I mentioned sauna facilities are nice for this part of Europe, so keep that in mind for your expectation - it will not be comparable to those at say Velingrad (the famous spa town southwest Bulgaria), let alone anything in Western Europe. That said, the massage itself is comparable to the best anywhere. - There are some floors that were not (yet) renovated, so can't say what the rooms are like there

Review 101:We were sorta "stranded" here due to a freak winter storm in October (which is normally still warm). Fortunately Hotel Riga was such a wonderful place we ended up enjoying our "strandedness" quite well. So many things are great about Hotel Riga: - Staff was excellent all around, with some way above and beyond. First, we got "upgraded" to a "renovated" room on a "renovated" floor (10th floor). Being in the off season, I think this is pretty common (see other reviews). The staff at the Spa Center was even more amazing!! - The renovated room is modern, comfortable, and clean with a fancy shower (body spray, mood lighting, etc.). Caveat is it leaks water a bit, so some mini "flooding" can occur outside the shower - View of the Danube (pretty much every room has a view) - On the waterfront promenade, with fairly short walk to town center - Convenient private parking - Nice sauna facility for this region, amazing massage (one of the best anywhere) - Most staff members (not all) speak English fairly well, a pleasant surprise for this part of Europe - Excellent food at the restaurants, although we thought the downstairs Riga Tavern's food and service were much better than the upstairs Panorama restaurant. The Panorama restaurant was more famous, but we thought the atmosphere was a bit stuffy and pretentious for our taste, and waiter wasn't as friendly (until we left tips that is :) ).

Review 102:Booking.com stated 2.2 miles from hour giurgiu which is where we wanted to be. It isn't, more like 10 & involved lengthy delays crossing borders

Review 103:Could you provide feather pillows as well as synthetic filling ones - which are very uncomfortable. room should be service by the end of the morning, not during the mid-afternoon when the guest may want to have a rest.

Review 104:I have stayed many times at this hotel and in the better rooms, it is very comfortable and the staff are helpful. For those not wishing to leave the hotel to eat, the Panorama restaurant has an interesting menu.

Review 105:The room was spacious and very well equipped, nice breakfast, during the dinner in the tavern there was a show program, which we liked much. Also the staff was friendly and the location is good - close to the center and right next to Danube river.

Review 106:We booked a superior suite as the price difference was not too much, however on arrival they upgraded us at no extra charge to the superior apartment/penthouse. It was fantastic to say the least, the bed was super comfy, we had wonderful views and thoroughly enjoyed the luxury of the suite. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel its self was amazing. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Review 107:We had a large, clean and comfortable room with a lovely view of the River Danube. Good food in the Garden Restaurant in the evening and good breakfast. Good parking and wi fi reception in the room. Nothing to dislike

Review 108:The prices in the restaurant seem to have increased significantly

Review 109:I have stayed at the Riga many times and have always found it good value for money and very friendly

Review 110:would have liked to be the one who did the "snagging" of the new decor, sadly letdown by tiny details. bad join of carpets wallpaper overlapped and other such tiny flaws. so easily fixed by someone with an eye for detail

Review 111:staff, friendly and helpful free upgrade food was lovely and good value comfy and smart room

Review 112:Friendly staff that, to the extent possible, would always upgrade your room. The hotel has an own parking area right in front of the entrance. Breakfast is very good too. Conference rooms are available on demand against very reasonable fees and without bureaucratic red tape.

Review 113:Only 2 small points, shower did not drain well in room 1005 and no hotwater at 5pm or cold water at 8am? Neither spoilt the hotel for me.

Review 114:Everything. Very helpful staff, excellent room with view over the riverto Romania, secure underground parking. Great terrace restaurant and theshashlik was fantastic.

Review 115:Lovely rooms. Welcoming and helpful staff. Good value for money and with a nice restaurant. Also provided secure storage for our cycles. If I can I'll be back.

Review 116:Breakfast has limited choises especially the sweets! More choises will be perfect!

Review 117:Excellent decoration, very comfortable beds a nice couch ! Very beautiful view of the city and river ! A perfect bathroom with bathtub and shower and a great small 2 chair living room to enjoy a drink and the view!

Review 118:i have with me two photos for two tea caps steel have women lib's paint ,, they dont clean , , lobby steel from communist time no improvement at all,, i have two hotel in Bucharest , i se her u give height rate like this hotel has 9 from u, i think deserve 7,5 like what we have in Bucharest

Review 119:i like location , the summer restaurant it very relax air clean , but very old from Communist time ,

Review 120:Very good hotel. Reserved a standard room. Got a superior room..same price.Best hotel in town. Room was new refurbishment . it still smelled newenest. Hd quality sat channels. Own parkinglot and also underground garage if asked.

Review 121:Can't think of anything and surprised the Hotel gets hardly any mention in the Guide books.Guide book coverage of the Ruse and Velito Tarnovo provinces is really rather poor in those that I have seen, about 6 various ones.

Review 122:I greatly appreciated the complimentary upgrade.thought the pillows were fun and the "wet room was great.very much enjoyed my dinner in the Panorama Restaurant at such a kindly price to the wallet with attentive service. The view from the bedroom was excellent

Review 123:Nothing special.

Review 124:The staff were very friendly and service minded. Especially the receptionist gave us a very friendly welcome. The room was newly renovated with a modern design. The restaurant at the top floor was fantastic with a panorama view and exelent service.

Review 125:Feather pillows would be better as an option instead of bouncy synthetic ones... also better coffee at breakfast

Review 126:The bed is very comfortable and the room is well equipped. garden and restaurant facilities are excellent

Review 127:Exellent location, very quiet, good breakfast, good Internet, welcome fruits and cookies. Earlier check-in, upgrade to a suite free of charge. Very comfortable bed. Friendly staff (special thanks to Mrs. Kamenova).
