Reviews for Hostellerie Au Vieux Hetre

Review 1:Room 7, the annexe, was cold and smelt damp. Heating is provided by Storage heater. It was cold in the evening and very hot at 03.00hrs. Tiny heater in bathroom. Rooms in main building may well be a different standard. We had breakfast at 08.30 and heating was not ON in breakfast room???

Review 2:Very pleasant host, who pointed us towards an excellent restaurant. He did apologise for the damp smelling room.

Review 3:No bar, no restaurant, despite information on website. Expected to pay over the odds for a Grand Prix weekend but a basic room, continental breakfast, no bar and no restaurant at a cost of 500€ per night for a double room was extortionate. Pointed out to Robert ( who we met in the bar in the village) who attempted to justify the lack of facilities and the price without any success. We did however shame him into providing an omelette at breakfast. This part of the weekend was a rip off and even their published price of 150€ per night would be too much.

Review 4:Location was good for Grand Prix.

Review 5:The bed was not very confortable

Review 6:Staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was big and clean. It's very close to many touristic objectives. Parking place is in front of the building.

Review 7:We didn't like the stay. The hotel itself was +- OK despite it is located in the hole where is nowhere to walk around in the evening after dinner. But the owner of hotel is a really greedy person. He really believes that all people have to pay him just because he is.Tried to charge us for all possible things. During 3 day stay the feeling that he wants to drain our wallets never left us. He even told me something like " if you have got money for a fency car so you can find money to pay my extras". Really disgusting. He even called the personal of the site booking.com to tell them that he wanted to charge us extra for all possible things. The people from the site booking.com called us on Saturday to find out what he wants from us.It was really one of the most unplesant stays in my life. There are no Dutch speaking channels on TV exept Canvas and EEN , the drink glasses were not cleaned , the garbage bucket was not emptied. He charges 5 Euro per day for Wi Fi what is really amazing for that kind of room which costs more than 70 Euro per night. We had a nice holiday despite that but the stay in this hotel left a bitter taste.

Review 8:Parking is slightly awkward if the hotel is full

Review 9:Genial host and a great location for attending races at Spa - takes about 20 minutes through quiet country roads to P1 & P2 at the track - nearby restaurants and pub all within walking distance

Review 10:We loved our brief trip to Jalhay thanks to the nice stay we had at the Hostellerie. The owners, a warm-hearted couple, even made sure that we received the key and instructions although we arrived late in the night. Breakfast was served in a beautifully decorated room and also the room we slept in was wonderful. The bathroom was newly done. We truly enjoyed our stay and would recommend any one to stay at this lovely place.

Review 11:nothing

Review 12:We had an excellent hihly relaxing staying at Hostellerie Au Vieux Hetre. The friendly owner was so warming and helpfull. The hotel has that exclusive Saint-Tropez feeling about it. Golf items (pictures with the owner too) everywhere, Greatly decorated, which makes the hotel having that special nostalgic feeling. Breakfast was more than enough. That extra buffet formula really isn't needed at all. The dinner we had was quite delicious. We had the wild menu. and all was made with top quality ingredients into a feast for the taste buds.Highly satisfied. No complaints what's so ever !!

Review 13:The restaurant was closed which was annoying after a very long day travelling. The only glass was chipped. The bathroom had a new shower but the rest was old and in need of repair.

Review 14:friendly staff and flexible

Review 15:Everything

Review 16:lack of water pressure on the shower

Review 17:Cousy and friendly place

Review 18:No bad experience - we would have liked an electric kettle in our room

Review 19:Courteous and friendly host

Review 20:lovely roads on towards koblenz, nice restaurant across road,

Review 21:WC - simply box in the chambre- without door and ceiling. No TV. Very french breakfest.

Review 22:Location, host, coffee and excellent jam.

Review 23:Warm welcome, comfortable room, excellent hospitality and delicious food in restaurant. We will definately stay again.

Review 24:Garden Excellent evening meals Host and staff Other.good restaurants in jalhay Town of Spa Easy journey to francochamps circuit

Review 25:A lot of kitchen noise in the bedroom Lousy breakfast

Review 26:Nice garden, pleasant hosts, comfortable rooms.

Review 27:Nothing to dislike at all.

Review 28:A warm welcome a gorgeous garden and probably the best evening meal of the whole holiday.

Review 29:I can honestly say that if you're travelling or going to spa & you need a clean safe rest stop, this place is perfect

Review 30:Clean & friendly, we were greeted upon arrival after a very long day on the road. Tip: try the local strawberry jam with your breakfast. Oh, spa racetrack is a ten minute drive

Review 31:We had a very quick visit here as i had a race nearby. I was accompanied by my wife and 4yr old girl. For the price the room was very old and quite shabby. plastic shower, make shift toilet and the deco of the room left alot to be desired. the third bed that was rolled in to the room for my daughter was very very bad quality - almost a hammock - so much so that we had her sleep with us as we did not want her back hurt. it was also quite funny to see on rate card on the door a whole range of extra costs like an extra 5 euros in winter for heating etc etc

Review 32:- Need to pay extra for breakfast with eggs and fruit etc. - double room with rather small bed

Review 33:- Excellent dinner - Friendly, familial atmosphere - Close to walking trails

Review 34:The owner's attitude on the quality of his cooking has been felt as being a bit over enthousiastic and driving. We would have preferred to see the wine list extended to medium range prices.

Review 35:We liked the welcome by the owner who was very forthcoming, friendly, and helpful. We also liked the breakfast, the dinner and the family atmosphere in the lounge and dining rooms. We very much appreciated the game menu and the local stories from the owner during our Saturday dinner.

Review 36:Unfortunately the walls in this hotel are probably made of paper so you can/have to hear your neighbours even when they whisper. Embarrassing.

Review 37:The dinner.

Review 38:The remoteness of the village.

Review 39:The amazingly warm welcome from the owners. The beautiful garden and bird house. The great food. The brand new shower room.

Review 40:The owner fromthe first moment made clear to us that as we bookedthrough booking.com we were a second category client. Secondly we felt apressure to inform them if we will have a diner at their restaurant ornot, even about breakfast to confirm immediately if we wish acontinenetal one or the other for booking.com clients. For yourinformation your clients are having a piece of bread with some jam. Whata pitty for your company. As you know we are frequent clients and wenever have been so much disappointed. And last but not least the ownergave us a hard time with the parking and was quite agressive with hiscommnents. Thank you for your attention

Review 41:There was nothing that I didn't like. However, I would like to pointout that although we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and considered theextra payment good value for the additional selection, I would prefer toreceive a choice, within the basic B&B cost, and be offered softrolls or croissants and not just crusty French bread.

Review 42:Warm welcome by a friendly English speaking host. Very comfortable roomwith excellent facilities. Choice of restaurants and bars nearby. Carparking on site. Delicious breakfast served; however we opted to payextra for an additional selection of hot and cold food.

Review 43:I think that the owner was somewhat too familiar (questions, remarks andcontacts). Some might love it... For us it was not so much the case...

Review 44:Perfect location in Jalhay and for discovering surroundings. Therestaurant of the hotel is quite good, but the score of 13 in the Gault& Millau is somewhat way too high.

Review 45:Shower room did not have a separate bath room. Toilet and shower were in a cubicle which was separated from the room with a curtain.

Review 46:Excellent food. Quite location and nice sorroundings.

Review 47:The owner was very welcoming. I can speakFrench but he had excellent English. The accommodation was excellent and the garden with the aviary was lovely. We ate at the hotel and the meal was really top class, but not for guests on a limited budget! We stayed only for one night, the first night of our holiday and we had a memorable meal and a great stay.

Review 48:No schampoo/balsam in the rooms but if you ask the hotel they will provide you with it.

Review 49:The staff is very nice. The service here is far better than the average Belgian service!

Review 50:Hostellerie Au Vieux Hetre is extremely friendly it is run by acouple. We were late arriving at the hotel yet were asked if we wishedto have a meal even though it was clear anyone who had been havingameal had long finished. The husband is attentive without beingintrusive, his wife does all the cooking which we found delicious.Theroom we had was comfortable clean and had a lovely view over abeautiful garden. The bar area was quiet and comfortable. Our host whospoke perfect English took the time to get to know us and offeredadvice on places we could visit. All around the stairs and enterancearea are fascinating pictures of our host with many celebrities (lotsof racing drivers) and actors. We are intending to use Hostellrie AuVieux Hetre anytime we are in Belgium.

Review 51:Our room was no good as the price could expect. But comporing with others I amhappy with my expending days in it.

Review 52:Family hotel. Owners make feel you like home. Nice restaurant , food from the area and really nice garden. You can avoid the restaurant.

Review 53:The attached house we stayed in was not clean and the facilities werepoor. The lower price is no excuse for that.

Review 54:The food was good. We got maps and other information for our stay. Thelittle village Jalhay has everything (best Gourmets Belgiums, goodlocation to other bigger cities and nature, nice bar and people)

Review 55:We were a little bit disappointed by the fact that we didn’t get a room in the nice building which is on all photos but in a small house next to it. The room itself was nice furnished so it was okay for us. Some reservations: 1) the bathtub was not in the best condition – some investment into the bath equipment seems to be inevitable; 2) it was very cold in the toilet but this was a minor thing; 3) the continental breakfast could be more “colorful” but there is a possibility to pay extra (9 €) for a “richer” breakfast. Parking can be difficult in the hotel area if the hotel is sold out. But there is still a possibility to park your car on the street close to the hotel.

Review 56:We spent a sunny weekend in the region enjoying Hautes Fagnes in winter. The hotel is small and cozy, exactly what we were looking for. The owner is a kind person, bon vivant, globetrotter and obviously a passionate cook. Unfortunately we missed the opportunity to taste his cuisine but we bought his book with some recipes in it. The room was clean and calm. We recommend this hotel (and Jalhay) for those who wish to spend most of the day doing outdoor activities like hiking and want to return in the evening into a hotel with a pleasant atmosphere.

Review 57:Amm.. Let seee... Breakfast, I wished their was a little more variety.May be fresh bread, I think fresh bread would do the magic!!!

Review 58:I liked the services, the rooms were clean, I dint get to eat a mealfrom the Hostel but I want to imagine it would taste wonderful, I wasvery happy I could by Robert Dedouaire Cuisine Book, I have a lot topractice and to cook in Kenya, I will for sure suggest to any one comingfrom Kenya or anyother traveler I meet to pay the hostel a visit. I alsolike the drawings from Rene Housman, I think they are interesting andintriguing to look at. I liked the "walk of fame Pictures" on the hallway, made me feel welcomed to know the hostel: gave me a family feeling,openness... This I liked very much.

Review 59:The restaurant was open only Fri-Sat

Review 60:The life in the village Close to the Haute-Fagnes

Review 61:Nice and quiet rooms and warm-hearted owner. Nice stop.

Review 62:lousy breakfast . very expensive dinner, we only had one. no towel rails in the bathroom.

Review 63:room was o.k

Review 64:Wifi would be useful.

Review 65:Very friendly host. Very good food. Rooms are basic but comfortable.

Review 66:Food, few options

Review 67:the staff were very pleasant. the presentation of the owner was really super. Despite that he was closed, he made for a super menu. The garden .

Review 68:Good place to stay, very clean, the breakfast was nice, the dinner in this place are very Delicious, the stuff was very great and helpful.

Review 69:Rooms only slightly heated when checking in. No warm water (not in the evening and not in the morning)
