Reviews for Hotel Gasthof 't Zweerd
Review 1:Hard to find Parking if its a peak time around the square
Review 2:Very Good Hotel in the Heart Of Ypres Located on the square 3 mins from the Menin Gate Good Breakfast rooms had a feel of a chain hotel Excellent staff
Review 3:We're not smokers and there was the smell of cigarette smoke in the hotel in the morning. Our room was unaffected though, so nothing to really worry about.
Review 4:Family room easily accommodated the four of us (2 adults and 2 children). Wasn't luxurious, but great value for money. Excellent location.
Review 5:Superb location in the centre of Ypres, and close to Cloth Hall and Menin Gate. Great breakfast. Also enjoyed tea in the restaurant one night. Very comfortable accommodation. Adequate parking available in streets close by. Kind, helpful, and generous hosts.
Review 6:I had not a bad experience during the different times we went there
Review 7:Everything. I always go to 't Zweerd. The location is good , food is good staff is very friendly
Review 8:--tv remote did not work well though we asked for it (and battery) to be checked. staff went to our room to check it, seemed to work after a few taps (but reaction time is too slow, so is it the remote or the battery?). --facilities either broken or outdated: matress of bunkbed old and dirty with big stain (you can see it if you're sleeping in the lower bed. single sliding door to toilet/bathroom doesnt close well so smell went out to the bedroom (big gap between sliding dior and wall and it was a small family room!). --toilet paper ran out just after check-in.found reserve in the cloak but dirty/dusty and paperholder has a key so we asked downstairs. owner/mgr came in while we are trying to make the children sleep and he commented that normally there is a reserve in the closet. i answered,"but the holder is locked with your key". are the guests expected to search in the closet (cloak) and use the big roll of (dusty)tissue paper just like that? it should be checked regularly. -- a big spider visited the toilet (via the filthy exhaust?) -- our door can only be locked with one bolt, the key doesnt go in the keyhole from inside, seems it was broken and replaced with a single bolt. makes you feel unsafe. --Next morning, found a plastic cup of beer or whatever liquid it was, beside our door. *** we've stayed in a lot of hotels that's cheaper/same price but have better quality/ safety/ cleanliness factor
Review 9:central location, buffet breakfast-inclusive
Review 10:nothing to dislike!
Review 11:location superb! Free nearby parking on street within 250 yrds after unloading luggage right outside. Lift was a godsend to my elderly father!
Review 12:We loved the location of the hotel. Especially as we used it as a base for our research of WWI battlefields. All the surrounding cemeteries were close by. Menin Gate was just a short walk for the nightly ceremony. Breakfast was included and very tasty.
Review 13:Needs some cosmetic attention - very dated décor (not in a good way!) - the breakfast is very basic - very little staff presence - you get what you pay for!
Review 14:Good location - good value @ €50 per night
Review 15:Rooms quite small. One of our party had an extremely small room which was supposed to sleep 3! Good job there was only one person!
Review 16:Excellent location. Cleanliness of room.
Review 17:Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Hotel was very Easy to find and just a 10 min walk from the train station. Rooms seem like they have been recently redecorated and were trendy and comfortable. Free wifi worked well everywhere. Breakfast was much appreciated. I will stay again.
Review 18:Bathroom is rather small and the door lock is not very secured.
Review 19:The location and the fact that you can park your car near to the hotel if you are lucky.
Review 20:The hotel reception staff were OK, nothing outstanding, bathroom small and basic.
Review 21:A good standard of basic hotel with a Clean room. Good location for visiting Ypres.
Review 22:Rooms very hot! Could do with a fan? Room very tight in areas (bathroom) and dated decor. (This may be down to the age of the building which is beautiful from the square) might be listed???
Review 23:Excellent friendly management and staff. Food in restaurant was superb! Breakfast was extended for us only
Review 24:I would have preferred a second pillow, but then, I didn't think to look for one or ask for it. Enough hanging space, but at least some drawer space would have been useful. . There apparently were boxed waste pipes in a corner of the room from the floor above and the sound of running water was quite loud - enough to disturb sleep or cause one to wonder if there was a leak.
Review 25:It was perfectly placed for us, and the room not overlooked with no street noise. We were given our first evening meal free, because of some hitch in the booking arrangements, though we had not raised any complaint. The food was perfectly OK, and the sundae's extremely generous! All information was in three languages.
Review 26:Pleasant helpful staff. Very clean room. Good Breakfast. Nice food in restaurant. Handy for the bus link to the main Rail/Bus Stn. Few minutes walk to the Menin Gate and other attractions. Would definately stay again.
Review 27:We felt the room was lacking in any character and compact for 4 people. There was no outside view.
Review 28:The staff were exceptionally friendly and a lovely breakfast was provided. We felt our stay was excellent value for money.
Review 29:Good hotel right in the centre of Ieper and is a good base for both the town centre attractions and for visiting the many places of interest in the surrounding area.
Review 30:Plenty of space, all facilities as described, bed settee alitte mingy, lift very small, parking 3/4 minutes walk from hotel, maybe could have done with more towels for 5 of us. Owner very nice.
Review 31:The sockets in the room were in awkward to reach areas. Check in was a little disorganised, check out was simple.
Review 32:Very, very convenient for all that Ypres has to offer (right on the Grot Market square!). Great value for money with literally dozens of Bars and Restaurants within a couple of minutes ambling paced walk and only 4 minutes to MENIN gate at the same pace.
Review 33:The rooms are a little small but comfortable. Only public parking available that is free from 09.00 to 18.00.
Review 34:Located in the centre of town near the Menin gate, Flanders museum and restaurants but the rooms were very quiet. A lot of public parking available. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 35:The location was brilliant for Ypres (leper) itself, being right on the town square. Also ideal for travelling further afield. Parking was easy and reasonably priced. You can park for free, if you don't mind a 10 minute walk.
Review 36:Problem with a room booking and where our friends seemed to get nice(ish) rooms I was left with something that felt like I was in a hostel. Very small room with a window looking out onto a brick wall. Still charged me the same rate though!!
Review 37:Excellent location to the Menin gate and right on the square. Staff were very friendly and pleasant.
Review 38:It was very noisy due to the Rally. Walls are to fine and you listen to your neighbors like they are inside of your bedroom.
Review 39:The personal is very friendly and gentle.
Review 40:My friend and I loved the cleanliness of the room and its location. The Manager was lovely because we arrived a few hours before we could check-in and he kindly placed our luggage in the dining room until we checked in that afternoon. We were also leaving the hotel earlier than breakfast was served so he provided us with plastic bags and let us take some of the continental breakfast items with us. We only stayed for one night but would happily stay there again. Thank you!
Review 41:Bedrooms were a bit small & the bathroom even smaller. Everything was functional & it was ok for an overnight stay.
Review 42:Location for Menin Gate excellent. Near to bars & restaurants. Checking in & out very efficient. Good breakfast.
Review 43:rooms are small but this is typical in the older style hotels in Belgium with character. Stay in one of the hotel chains if you want large rooms with no character !!
Review 44:Location ... 1'min walk to Menin gate - couldn't be more central
Review 45:facilities are quite basic though clean for Belgium the prices were quite high for the accommodation offered
Review 46:great location for Ypres and surrounding area.
Review 47:Not easy to find as no clear hotel sign visible from the road.
Review 48:Location in & with rooms overlooking Ypres town square, & within easy walking distance of the Menin Gate, make this 2 star hotel an ideal location for those interested in WW1 memorials. While the hotel rooms are a little spartan (no fridge) & small, they are comfortable enough at a good rate. The breakfast which was included in the tariff, was quite adequate.
Review 49:Nothing of consequence but cleaners locked us in our room by accident and the key didn't work from the inside!
Review 50:Location and helpfulness with overnight bike storage.
Review 51:Not a bad experience if you are an early riser but the front rooms overlook the main square and the buses start running on the noisy cobbles at 6am. No need for an alarm call.
Review 52:Ypres is a surprisingly interesting town and the hotel is five minutes walk from Menin Gate.
Review 53:Size of the shower room, too small. A little pricey for the overall deal but probably making hay while the sun shines? Difficult to get a place to stay as 100 years since '14-18 war.
Review 54:The location is really good. A few hundred yards from the Menen Gate.
Review 55:For a town which gets so many English visitors and an hotel that gets more than its fair share of English speaking guests, I thought perhaps the management could provide some English TV stations, a facility which I have had in a small guest house in Ieper, so should not be out of the range of a busy hotel.
Review 56:Absolutely central to everything in Ypres.
Review 57:My credit charge was charged mid way through my stay. I would have liked the opportunity to use my debit card, and be present when it was charged.
Review 58:Excellent location for the centre of Ypres and the Menin Gate. Parking no problem. Very nice breakfast.
Review 59:Excellent location only 5 minutes to Menin Gate. Great and tasty breakfast, cold buffet style with good selection. All staff cheerful and happy to help with anything. Would recommend to anyone.
Review 60:Room was very small. Bathroom was tiny. Very badly positioned room. Ridiculous thing to boil water. I would rate this as a hostel rather than a hotel. Bed was uncomfortable, towels were worn and thread bare. Room was not that clean, and bathroom was quite mouldy. Very old and outdated. From Australian standards barley a one star. But, location was fantastic.
Review 61:Location
Review 62:The window in the room could not be opened, and stay open with out banging, with any wind blowing it. And the room would be very hot in the summer.
Review 63:Being so close to every thing, in the center, but not too much noise. Easy walking to many places.
Review 64:We had a very clean and tidy room with twin beds. Located right in the downtown, surrounded by restaurants and patios (with their own restaurant in-house), and steps from the In Flanders Museum and Menin Gate. Parking was available overnight in the main square for free 6pm-9am but was pay parking during the day (at the meters). Very nice staff!
Review 65:Room was a bit dated. Clean but in need of updating.
Review 66:Location. On the market square. Close to parking. Probably the closest hotel to the Menin Gate. Friendly welcome form the staff.
Review 67:The bathroom arrangements were somewhat cramped and one room had a pipe down which water fell loudly
Review 68:It was situated conveniently and the staff were helpful and friendly.
Review 69:It was very good value for the money but found the shower\bathroom in our room rather cramped and would not have wanted to stay in that room for more than 2 nights
Review 70:Friendly and very helpful staff. Good food and beer! Location excellent
Review 71:Wi-Fi was poor, would only work in one part on the room. Noisy from the Grote Markt, so don't rely on sleeping in late
Review 72:Perfect location. Breakfast was good and plenty of it, staff were friendly. room was fine, nice bed, toilet facilities were what you expect - good shower and reasonable size. Overall room size was fine
Review 73:The hotel staff are very helpful. The hotel is walking distance to the Flanders Museum and Menin Gate with easy parking. The breakfast was wonderful and we also ate at the restaurant which was also good value for money and enjoyable. The rooms are large and easily accommodated our family of 4 with loads of room for our luggage. The tea/coffee, shampoo/conditioner and bath gel was a nice touch considering the rating of the hotel against others that we had stayed. We stayed on the top floor and the lift was fantastic at the end of the day when we were checking in.
Review 74:Wifi strangely didn't work in the room (3rd floor) but did work in the bar across the square. But this is a minor thing.
Review 75:Location, right in the middle of Ieper on the market square. Good value for money. Friendly staff.
Review 76:Very small room, small narrow beds, which were far to low for a middle aged couple. Looked for all the world like a kebab house from out front.
Review 77:Very friendly young lady at reception (for want of a better description) Excellent location
Review 78:If you're staying in Ieper/Ypres choose a hotel on the market square. Gasthof't Zweerd was quiet and comfortable, great value, had a fine restaurant and was close to parking. And best of all when the Saturday market set up, we were right at the door.
Review 79:Located in the Grote Markt, 300 mts from the Menin Gate, in the centre of Ypres surrounded by beautiful buildings and quality shopping, why would you not want to stay here. Staff are friendly and speak all the four languages that are used in the country (Dutch, French, German and English) the breakfast selection just melted in your mouth as did the selections from the restaurant. The hotel delivered all that it claimed with a family room that gave space to move and single beds for our teenage children that were clean and comfortable. The bathroom, whilst small and compact, was fully functional and again clean. I would not hesitate to stay here again and access the warm hospitality of the Ypres people.
Review 80:The hotel is modest from the outside but we were greeted by a friendly receptionist. The room was basic but clean and comfortable and in December it was very warm! The bathroom is only separated by a sliding wooden door so if you like your privacy then this might not be to your taste. The breakfast was very yummy although be aware that the milk is in fact cream! Our tv didn't work so having tried to fixit the staff member gave us another key to a different room to use for the night for no extra cost. Checking out was very easy too and payment was taken quickly. The location is fantastic, looking over the market square in ypres and parking isn't a problem.
Review 81:Nothing
Review 82:Loved the great location. Our room on the second floor overlooked the Central square and was only minutes from Menin Gate. Comfy bed and our dietary needs were catered for at breakfast. Loved the lift.
Review 83:Friendly staff. Fabulous location rights in the main square. Great bar/restaurant downstairs. Shops and more restaurants in the square. Walking distance from Flanders Field museum. Menin Gate Memorial and catherdral. Very clean. Rooms tidied daily. Lift to all floors. Would recommend to anyone.
Review 84:Rooms could be a bit bigger
Review 85:The location is very good, hotel was clean and tidy, wide choice of food at breakfast. We would certainly stay again at this Hotel.
Review 86:Hard to spot. Entrance door appeared to be restaurant with rotisserie chickens cooking. Did not get as far as automatic doors that would lead to reception window - which was dark. Had to call on phone to reach someone to find out how to get in. Another time unable to reach anyone at reception from room phone, had to go in search of them.
Review 87:Convenient location in the heart of Ieper. Eatery, shops, museums, historic spots, walking trails all right there. Good breakfast provided with room rate.
Review 88:The neon lights of the Sword were not on - I should have asked
Review 89:Lift to get to the third floor. Nice family rooms. Very comfortable bed. Good lights for reading at night. Excellent breakfast.
Review 90:Nearby parking on saterdays can be a challenge due to the weekly market opposite to the hotel.
Review 91:The hotel has it's own restaurant, staff is friendly, nice breakfast included and really close to Menin gate, nice restaurants and In Flanders Fields museum.
Review 92:Non smoking room but could smell cigarette smoke coming from somewhere in the middle of the night
Review 93:Great breakfast; great location in the middle of town; close to museum
Review 94:T!he yellow decor in the room was very outdated, and also the position of the toilet,as being rather large it was a struggle to use even for my wife,it would have been better placed where the towel rack is.
Review 95:The location was excellent, as all amenities were close to hand, and parking right by the hotel. We enjoyed our overnight stay thank you.
Review 96:Nothing to complain about, got what we expected and more for the price
Review 97:Staff very friendly and helpful, amazing location with free parking from 6pm on town square and all parking bays around it. Good breakfast. Hotel was basic but clean and perfect for what we wanted and at the price we paid it was great value. Xmas market in town was great, smaller than some of others in area but therefore less busy and a great atmosphere.
Review 98:First impression was quite a strong smell of curry - which we later learned was from the chickens being spit roasted downstairs. The rooms were not nice - we had the 2 family rooms and they looked like a hodge-podge of cheap beds chucked into the room. The bunk bed in the larger room was quite wobbly and squeaky. No view in either room. However, the rooms were really clean - towels and bedlinen are white and spotlessly clean.
Review 99:The location is superb, on the main square, minutes' walk from In Flanders Field Museum and Menin Gate. There was no dedicated parking for the hotel, but it was very easy to get parking on the street nearby for 8 euros a day.
Review 100:Very minor points Parking is in the Grotte market which is closed off market days. Got to be on the ball to remember and feed the parking meter in the morning
Review 101:Food very good, good selection of beer Well sighted for Last post ceremony overnight parking free
Review 102:Wifi signal weak at times.
Review 103:Right in the hub of Ypres and very easy walk to the major tourist spots. Terrific breakfast. Staff very helpful. Bus to station about 50 feet away and regular.
Review 104:With this hotel you get exactly what it says on the tin My wife and myself were on an overnight stay. This is a clean 2 star establishment located right in the centre of town. Very good value for money 69 euros inc breakfast for 2
Review 105:The location of this hotel is excellent right in the centre of the market square. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We did not have an evening meal here but the breakfast was of a high standard. We are planning on returning next year and would defiantly stay here. Great value for the price
Review 106:No-one there for us to check in with when we first arrived No English TV channels but if all you want to do is watch TV then stay at home !
Review 107:Location was great - just a short walk along from the Menin Gate Breakfast was good - continental ham, cheese, croissants etc
Review 108:Very basic room and an all pervading smell of curry from the kitchen.
Review 109:Great location right on Grote Markt. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Easy parking on the square (except Friday night!).
Review 110:expensive for a pretty basic room but we were there in armistice week when accommodation was at a premium
Review 111:couldn't get a better location, rooms clean and comfortable, staff helpful when asked.
Review 112:Tired room, particularly bathroom. Tiny and unviewableTV with no English programmes available and hopeless reception.
Review 113:Good location on the square close to Menin Gate, In Flanders Fields Museum and the Cathedral. Convenient base for many WW1 Cemeteries. Choice of restaurants nearby. Comfortable bed and pillows.
Review 114:We arrived early evening at the hotel. There was an appalling smell of fat as you walked in the hotel entrance and were welcomed by a spit of chickens cooking (as you have to walk through the restaurant to get to your room). It didn't longer which was lucky
Review 115:The room was clean and tidy on our arrival as was the bathroom. The proprietor was very welcoming. It's not a kind of hotel where one would spend hours in, but then who would given its location in Ypres.
Review 116:crummy, old not clean room, bad smells of the chickenrotisserie, water of the tank of the toilet took a long time to be filled, floor was hanging on one side, one bed was old, ...
Review 117:sheets were clean, velux-window had a good shade to make the room dark, quiet room under the roof
Review 118:Very creaky floorboards in our room, with three children wandering around made it quite noisy, layout not ideal but to be fair, this was due to having bunk beds, sloping roof and supporting roof beams in the room, obliterating the telly and nowhere to sit other than beds.
Review 119:The location was the best asset of the hotel, very close to the Menin Gate.I liked the family room as it meant we could stay with three children for the price of the room. Beds were comfortable.
Review 120:Parking is a bit hit and miss but locally free from 6pm until 9am the following morning so no big deal. Also free 30 minutes per day via the machines. Just make sure you move your car off the square before the market sets up.
Review 121:Good basic room in an unbeatable location for the Menin gate. Clean, tidy and all facilities worked as they should, complimentary shower gel was a bonus. Breakfast included was above expectations and made a good start to the day, usual continental fare plus mars bars and fresh fruit. Essential if travelling with teenagers was the free Wifi which connected and worked just fine. We didn't use the restaurant but the range and prices seemed to be on a par with the rest of the square. Please also check review from travelling companion Andy Crick who is far better with words than myself.
Review 122:The whole building smells constantly of curry? Something to do with the spitroast chicken downstairs. The bedrooms are old and the electrics dodgy, the bathroom too was tatty and we really didn't fancy using the shower cubicle :-(
Review 123:Breakfast was a good continental type and the dining room was pleasant.
Review 124:On arrival at the hotel the place was deserted and locked up. There was a broken bed in the hallway and dirt everywhere. The room was no better, dirty, damp and smelly. The hotel is very dirty and nothing like the photos. Best avoided!
Review 125:Location.
Review 126:Everything was fine.
Review 127:Right in the middle of the town, fantastic restaurant with reasonable prices. Good breakfast with friendly staff. Only 500 metres from Menin Gate Memorial.
Review 128:Certainly NOT a major problem but being on the 3rd floor was a bit tedious as access is only by the lift.
Review 129:The location is fantastic for visiting The Menin Gate, and the Flanders Field Museum. Hotel is basic but clean and comfortable with great breakfast,i didn't get to eat other meals there as the restaurant was always full so I presume its good. Highly recommended this Hotel.
Review 130:no air con, very noisey on hot nights with window open, room facing square
Review 131:location good next to main square and near Menin Gate. Good breakfast and good clean room and bathroom.
Review 132:Everything was fine with me.
Review 133:The friendliness of the Owners, the central location, the cleanliness, the lovely breakfast. If you want luxury this is not for you but if you want a modest, central, reasonably priced Hotel then this is the one.
The Fine Print
Please note that the hotel's restaurant and bar will be closed from 23/11/2015 - 3/12/2015.
