Reviews for Hotel Callecanes

Review 1:It had a swimming pool but it was not open until 1.30pm which was not acceptable, although they did make an exception when requested. The signage and road access to the hotel was poor.

Review 2:The quality of the hotel - rooms, fixtures, fittings and all round accommodation was excellent. The staff couldn't have been better. We had a difficult couple of days before we arrived due to a misunderstanding and incorrect assumption by the hotel but this was quickly addressed and the staff were very apologetic when we arrived.

Review 3:The staff were attentive, courteous and made sure we were well looked after. The hotel and beautiful pool were immaculate. The restaurant was excellent, I have rarely had such a perfectly cooked steak, the accompaniments were superb, the Haut Medoc was one of the best mid range wines I have tasted for a long time and very modestly priced. We finished our meal with the best Irish coffee I have ever tasted. How the Chef managed to get the cream floating on the coffee that in turn was floating on the perfectly clear Irish whisky, completely baffles me. Breakfast was a triumph of superb home made preserves, a very comprehensive range of cold meats, pastries and even omelette. I will never look at a "continental breakfast" the same way again!

Review 4:Only booked in for 2 nights! We hope to return in the near future.

Review 5:Really good welcome with complimentary drink from the owners who gave us all the info we wanted. They were most attentive repeatedly asking if all was OK, without being in your face. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. Excellent indoor swimming pool. Meals in the restaurant were exceptional particularly the scallops and canard.

Review 6:Very warm welcome, excellent service, very good room, well-located after a long drive in England, great food. The building has been tastefully and imaginatively extended and redeveloped.

Review 7:The restaurant is poor and not worth using. If you dare to complain you will have the Wrath of the owners to deal with !!! When I challenged the quality of our food I was told 'That's how we eat it here ' After I said I was not happy as we had waited 1.5 hours to be seated even though we had booked and my food was cold due to having the steak re cooked but my veg was not re heated so I left it and a fly in my wife's starter. So was offered a dessert . We declined as we were not after something for nothing but challenging the service and quality of our dinner. The hotel owners operate as chef , receptionist , waiter complete disarray . When I checked out and challenged my dinner bill as I felt a gesture of good will should have been offered . I was faced with a woman shouting at me and blocking my exit and a husband who I thought was about to assault me !!! They thought I was looking for a free bee!! No just recognition that they had not delivered on what they had offered and charged for.

Review 8:Decor

Review 9:Stylish modern hotel with lots of individual touches and loads of facilities. The room had a great bathroom with a bath and a beautiful view across the fields. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the best steak that we have had for a long time. Good choice of hot and cold food at breakfast and fresh bread and fruit.Family run, and they could not do enough for you. We liked it so much that we will definitely come back. If you like the Ariane in Ypres you will definitely like this.

Review 10:Advertised as Poperinge, nowhere near the town centre

Review 11:Great staff, great food, nice bar, safe internal bicycle storage, unbelievably pristine hotel looks and feels a day old

Review 12:Cannot think of a single thing we didn't like

Review 13:From the moment we walked in we felt so welcome and relaxed. Greeted with a lovely refreshing drink which was much appreciated after our journey. We were shown to our room and given a tour of the facilities. Our room was immaculately clean as was the entire hotel. The family room was spacious with good wi fi and English TV too. All staff were very obliging and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was beautifully laid out with plenty of choice. We had an evening meal on our first night and it was so impressive. Location is perfect for travelling about and the lorry park and security is certainly not an issue. We felt homely and safe at all times. We all fell in love with the dog and cats/kittens :) The swimming pool is brilliant, again so so clean. It was lovely to refresh with a swim at the end of a days site seeing. I cannot rate this hotel highly enough. We will certainly stop there again when visiting the area!!! Thank you for a wonderful stay

Review 14:No......still can't think of anything bad!

Review 15:What a lovely hotel! From the warm welcome we received (including a drink on arrival) - being personally shown to our room, good selection of food & drink in the bar. Breakfast - again, a good selection of items and friendly service. The management were very helpful in looking after us, my wife is disabled, but the room we were allocated was good, and they offered help with breakfast to the room etc if we wanted, advised access to door right next to car park etc. The pool was great - I had a quick swim each evening and had it to myself! Excellent location, literally on the border and ideal to get to from Calais and then explore into Belgium.

Review 16:Nothing

Review 17:The hospitality was fantastic, the evening meal(steak)was very good, and as we were heading to Calais early in the morning they even packed us a takeaway breakfast.Another lovely gesture from the host was to give us a empty Poppies gin decanter was now takes pride of place on my welsh dresser

Review 18:Little hard to find but no great drama.s

Review 19:Very very friendly and nothing too much trouble..pool clean and warm..food excellent..views of fields and surrounds brilliant

Review 20:We were made very welcome by the owners upon arrival and enjoyed the refreshing fruit drink as we checked in. There was ample parking and the Hotel is delightfully screened from the road and surroundings, but with lovely views to farmland to the rear of the building. The bonus to us was the indoor swimming pool area opening out into a secluded garden. Wonderful. The whole hotel was very well decorated and spotlessly clean with everything you need. The evening meal was very good as was the breakfast the following day. All in all an exceptional last night stay in Europe before heading for the tunnel crossing.

Review 21:The location close to Dunkirk/ Calais, Poeringe/ Ypres . Menin Gate. Very peaceful and lovely location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely modern rooms a little gem I want to keep to myself but that is being selfish so I will share. Will recommend to friends and family

Review 22:It's right beside the major truck stop. It used to be the old customs house hotel. Some may not like the views at the front. Ignore that. This is a really hospitable great place

Review 23:The owners are most helpful and friendly. The location is really convenient for Cassel and Ypres and the battlefields. The rooms are spacious clean quiet and comfortable. Breakfast excellent. Views to fields at back. Very close to motorway. A great place to stop.

Review 24:Nothing at all.

Review 25:Lovely hotel run by a charming family. Beautifully appointed room and tasteful decor throughout the hotel. Wonderful pool which we were lucky enough to have to ourselves. Proved to be an excellent base for a pilgrimage to Flanders.

Review 26:Can cope without an English breakfast but a toaster at breakfast would be a welcome addition. A double bed is preferable to the 2 singles pushed together. A shelf in the bathroom would help.

Review 27:Easy to find. Pool was lovely. Management social. Dinner great. Room more than adequate.

Review 28:Breakfast was a little sparse. Waited a long time for meal at dinner

Review 29:Friendly staff, easy parking free wifi, quality of meal at dinner once it arrived

Review 30:Warm,friendly welcome. Family owned. Nothing too much trouble.Attention to detail.Lovely hotel, clean, modern.Fabulous swimming pool, cosy lounges. Delicious food. Heartily recommend.

Review 31:It is in a remote location and not anywhere to explore around it unless you travel out.

Review 32:Such a lovely and clean hotel, very modern and up to date, very good Wifi reception in the rooms and the staff very pleasant. Breakfast lovely (fresh bread lots of jams etc) although a it bit limited Swimming pool very nice!

Review 33:Not able to connect to Wi-Fi but did not ask for help.

Review 34:Comfortable hotel. Friendly hosts. Good food. Good facilities like the swimming pool and parking.

Review 35:easy to find from the channel ports. If you are at the old border post you are there. Good springboard for the Ypres Salient and Poperinghe. Excellent breakfasts.and evening meals. Rooms and showers warm & clean. Family managed and very welcoming. The boys loved the pool after 'doing' WW1 all day,

Review 36:Pool had no changing room Breakfast was very limited and poor Hotel was dark, all lights dimmed. Bedroom was cold when we arrived, only turned on the heating in the room on arrival.

Review 37:Pool Staff

Review 38:Spacious and comfortable room, including tea making facilities and a large screen TV. Pool was fantastic and the hotel has other nice leisure areas, including a sun deck. Very friendly and helful staff, relaxed athmosphere.

Review 39:We thought the restaurant was good for adults but with a restricted menu that didn't cater for children and was rather expensive ,for families! As the hotel was in a rural area we would have used it more if it was cheaper and cater for families.

Review 40:The hotel was an enjoyable place to stay whilst visiting the battle fields and museums .the swimming pool was a bonus for the children to relax after a full day out.

Review 41:Unfortunately the spa was not included in the price which wasn't made clear at the booking. Evening meal was poor with little choice and the dinning room lacked atmosphere however they were very quiet so maybe that was why.

Review 42:The owners were extremely helpful and friendly, nothing was to much trouble. The accommodation was very good an very clean. The pool was fabulous. Breakfast was delicious with a good choice of local fair.

Review 43:The location. We were in Flanders to do one of the battlefield tours. When we booked nothing was available in Ieper for our dates so we chose Callacanes not realising how far it is from Ieper. If you have a car this wouldn't be a problem but the if like us you don't its a major one. There is NO transport to the hotel from Poperinge station and even Ieper does not have very many taxis.

Review 44:The hosts were terrific. Very helpful and friendly. The hotel itself is very modern and stylishly finished. WiFi works very well in the hotel room.

Review 45:I slept like a log the bed was very comfortable. The steak with papercorn sauce was to die for ! and the desert was lush. The breakfast was pleantifull and fresh. The owners went out of there way to ensure that my elderly Mother was taken care of and even made her cups of tea for her to drink while she was in bed. She loved all of the attention. Disabled facilities are fantastic, Mom would not have managed otherwise.Location was spot on for us Belguim but right on the boarder. Will definately go back xxx

Review 46:It is a roadside hostel really, so if you go, choose a room overlooking the fields at the back. Bit cheeky to charge extra for the use of the spa as that was one of the reasons we had chosen it!

Review 47:This is such a sweet place, they have obviously converted an old road-side hotel into a very tasteful place with lovely decor and attention to detail. There is a pool and if it is summer, the outside seating areas are lovely and plentiful. The owners were absolutely delightful - nothing was too much trouble. Location-wise, it is v close to Ypres and we even went to Bruges for an afternoon, but it is not walking distance to anything except the petrol pumps.

Review 48:We had 2 rooms. Our room (the twin bed room) was very good but my mothers room ( tripple single beds) had a smell in the shower. Other than that a very nice and friendly place. Ideal for Ypres (leper)

Review 49:- Beds were very nice but it was difficult to get a good night sleep because of the noise (air extractor in the bathroom was very noisy and could not be switch off) and the uncomfortable pillows (very high!!). - Breakfast finishes too early (10am!) and food choice was quite limited. - Pricy for a 3-star hotel.

Review 50:- Fully renovated rooms. - Friendly staff, specially at the reception (we arrived around midnight and had no problem to check in). - Location (in Popperinge, 15min drive to Ypres).

Review 51:Cannot think of anything... :-)

Review 52:Beautiful renovated hotel. The staff is great, absolutely friendly and helpful. Kitchen is superb, had everytime a delicious dinner. Well served breakfast with great choice. Free parking and the free WiFi worked well everywhere. Enjoyed a few sunsets on the sun terrace

Review 53:It was a little further outside Poperinge than we had imagined, but we soon got used to the route.

Review 54:Family room was spacious and comfortable with plenty of storage space. Staff were friendly and helpful and we liked the fact it was a family-run business. The buffet breakfast was excellent as was the food served in the evening. We loved the pool!

Review 55:Location is strange and might explain apparent low occupancy - real shame as in a good location I imagine it would be full. Not having tea/coffee making facilities in the room was a bit frustrating

Review 56:Very smart hotel and to have a pool was lovely. Owners were very friendly and helpful

Review 57:No tea/coffee facilities in the room. During the breakfast I was appalled to see that there was not even a simple cloth to hold the bread whilst cutting!!!! The result was that people in front of you were touching the same baguette you were going to cut!!! Similar situation with the cheeses. Generally the feeling in the breakfast room was quite stark without the cosy atmosphere that one should expect in a family hotel.

Review 58:It's a very good hotel, minimalist and exceptionally clean. Peaceful location. Convenient for motorway. Very quiet in spite of being fully occupied during our stay. Perfect swimming pool. Very friendly and welcoming owners who were very helpful in every way.

Review 59:Great location, first impression was very friendly, even at 11pm! Probably the cleanest hotel room I have seen, immaculate, we could park the car outside the room, view over a cornfield, great décor too, I am sick and tired of dirty rooms and misleading adverts, this is an exception, thanks to the staff! I would recommend and stay again, just gutted we had no time for the pool :(

Review 60:Made to feel very welcome. Beds are extremely comfortable and the swimming pool a most welcome addition. Breakfasts were also very good. Would certainly return again if in the area.

Review 61:This is a stylish hotel that combines warmth and elegance. It is a friendly family run hotel where nothing is too much trouble for the guests. We had a fantastic short break here and look forward to staying here again in the future

Review 62:Staff were great, all were very welcoming, helpful and personable. Atmosphere over dinner outdoors was great. Kids (8 & 10) loved the swimming pool & playing football with Gucci the hotel dog in the garden!

Review 63:We were so glad that Ypres was booked out as it meant we found this amazing place, it was so clean and comfortable. There was everything you could need in the bathroom. The location was peaceful with a rural outlook. The staff were very friendly the cup of tea on arrival was most appreciated. Breakfast is included in the tariff and was a very tempting buffet style with your tea or coffee served at your table. We will stay again on next visit from New Zealand

Review 64:Leaving on the Friday morning!!

Review 65:The boss and her husband went out of their way to make our stay most memorable nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Thank you both

Review 91:Welcome, comfy bed, local fresh cooking

Review 92:Shame swimming pool not open in mornings

Review 93:Friendliness and helpfulness of staff, spotless hotel

Review 94:The tranquil ambience and the friendliness of the hotel staff.

Review 95:Easy parking. Easy to find, pretty central for looking around the French/Belgium border.

Review 96:swimming pool too cold. Had to wait 1 hour between starter and main during evening meal.

Review 97:Room was excellent Staff

Review 98:The pool

Review 99:Front rooms rather near to HGV parking and movements

Review 100:Very modern and stylish layouts, gardens, rooms generally. Also very good dinner cuisine.

Review 101:The immediate surroundings need tidying - not the fault of the hotel - but don't be put off by this.

Review 102:As above

Review 103:It was a great location and we visited the ww1 memorial places. We didn't swim at the hotel but the pool was great. We'll recommended.

Review 104:We were made very welcome, and had a very comfortable pleasant three night stay. The staff were superb, the food was excellent.

Review 110:Very friendly Staff who were always willing to help. Bedrooms were excellent with very comfortable beds and everything modern and clean. Restaurant was also excellent with good food. Swimming pool was an added bonus. Close to Ypres and the coast which would suit all people. Best hotel in Belgium!!!

Review 111:not enough time allowed for breakfast: 08.00 - 09.30 is way too short. Selection of food on offer for breakfaast lacked variety .

Review 112:Though close to a busy road the hotel was remarkably quiet.

Review 113:The staff were very helpful, and were very attentive. The room was clean and very well laid out. The breakfast was very goof and had everything we wanted..

Review 114:Only one room key

Review 115:friendliness and helpfulness of staff made the stay very pleasant indeed.. disabled facilities very good but still booking.com do not have suitable filters when booking or reviewing that give good information to disabled travellers. I have complained about this before. Shame on booking.com
