Reviews for The Matterhorn Hostel Zermatt
Review 1:The room is quite small. There is no lock of the rooms and bathroom. There is only one electricity plug available to use in a room. Overall, it is not a comfortable hostel.
Review 2:the staff service is really nice.
Review 3:Starting to show wear and tear. Too dark in the eating/lounge. Bunk beds were too close to the lockers in room F that it almost blocks the fire escape. When a guest put a back pack at the foot of the bed the escape doors do not open fully. Upper bunk needs a latter to get into and out off. Instead they have one chair for three bunk beds.
Review 4:Great location and price. Mattress was comfortable and room temperature was warm enough.
Review 5:Sparky's was not open. Was looking forward to a pint after a long day of travel.
Review 6:What you would expect at a hostel. A place to sleep and shower and then get on about your journey.
Review 7:The only major thing that could have been an issue is that we ended up arriving to the hostel an hour after closing and were unable to obtain a key. We were very lucky that the guy who works at the restaurant attached to the hostel (very nice) was able to retrieve one for us. Moreover, don't arrive before or after the front desk opens/closes!
Review 8:It's a good location, not too far from the station, town or nice views of the Matterhorn. Staff gave me a good recommendation for somewhere cheap to eat which ended up being the best meal I had in Switzerland, and also provided a good solid breakfast in the morning.
Review 9:It could have had heating in the bedrooms and the bar could have a daily menu with cheap/quick meals for travelers on a budget.
Review 10:I liked the location, staff were friendly n beds were comfortable
Review 11:The room is very small. Bed is too low and soft. Wifi is only for public location.
Review 12:Location is good, 10min walk to the train station and 5min walk to the cable car station. Price is cheap.
Review 13:Not really a bad experience, but if you book this type of accommodation there are a couple of things you need to expect: 1. You get basic bedding, a woolen blanket and a pillow. You should take your own sleeping bag liner. 2. Shared facilities (male/female) toilets and wash sinks in one room, and shared showers albeit in seperate cubicles.
Review 14:The hospitality was top rate and the food in the restaurant was excellent. The bar had a really friendly and welcoming atmosphere, I did not feel the need to venture further into town. (Although this would be possible). Would I return? Yes of course. The accommodation looked a little tired and could probably do with a face lift, but it is budget accommodation in Zermatt, and ther was nothing wrong that would stop me going back.
Review 15:Extremely small rooms, no safelocks either on the room door or on the wardrobe, it's impossible to sit on the lower bed because the upper one is too close. No cover sheets for blankets, only one socket per room. Very dark rooms. Not comfy even if you book the whole room for a group of friends
Review 16:The cheapest, good wifi
Review 17:The room has no lock and the beds are not clean enough, people who stayed in the hostel have only few mix toilets and bathrooms to use. The facilities are old too.
Review 18:The showers were subpar and the beds were incredibly uncomfortable with bad blankets and a cold atmosphere.
Review 19:Staff was great and the location is unmatched. Price isn't too bad but it's the best in the area.
Review 20:Rooms are a bit old. Room heater was turn off which is not like other hotel or hostel. We thought the heater is off centrally so spent a clod night. But that was manageable.
Review 21:Nice budget hostel to stay. The person at Reception was very friendly.
Review 22:The reception area was tiny, the stairway and common room were cramped and uninviting, and the furniture was old and soiled. The fridge door fell off when opened. Blankets were old and one had holes in it. The heater was broken, with loose wires exposed. Men and women shared a single toilet with an open urinal, and the ablutions trough used for personal hand washing, dish washing, meal prep and clothes washing. Guests cooked with their own appliances in the small common room. Hygiene was a problem, the smell of common areas was not pleasant, and safety was a concern. Otherwise is was OK!
Review 23:the location
Review 24:The shower nozzle could not be adjusted, therefore water shot out onto the floor. The shower curtain did not fit either. I was given the top of a bunk bed; I'm 58 years old and young adults had bottom beds. The breakfast is not worth 7 Francs!
Review 25:Location and upstairs bar.
Review 26:Unhelpful staff. Asked for emergency medical information and didn't get any. Had to go to nearest restaurant to get number of doctor. No towels available for rent. Heat off in room with no instruction on how to turn on.
Review 27:Room was clean.
Review 28:Noisy when people walk around.
Review 29:The hostel is very well situated; non-expensive places to stay in Zermatt are rare! 10 minute walk to everything, 20 to train station! Friendly staff. Typical hostel backpacker hostel.
Review 30:Beds & pillows weren't the best as you expect. But they did the job. Noise from our fellow room mates didn't help.
Review 31:It was cheap good location. Friendly staff.
Review 32:room was too compact , may be because of too many bed in a very small room, if all the rooms are occupied you might face problem as there you will find not enough space to move around. You will not find any lock in the door and in bathroom, toilet is fair enough.
Review 33:I couldn't connect to the wifi, and the breakfast is not worth the price.
Review 34:I was a hesitant to stay at Matterhorn hostel after reading its many negative reviews, but was positively surprised (and talked to other guests saying the same thing). Nothing fancy, it's a basic hostel, but it's perfectly fine. Great location, costs nothing (this is Zermatt!!), and the rooms came with large lockers. Nice bar/restaurant to hang out at as well with cheap (by Swiss/Zermatt standards) beer.
Review 35:The hostel wasn't clean (the showers particularly), the water in the showers wasn't always hot and you can hear everything, which makes it hard to sleep.
Review 36:We liked the location (about a 2 minute walk from the cable car that takes you to the ski slopes), the fact that there was a room where we could leave our skis and such, and a balcony (although shared with the other rooms).
Review 37:-no cooking gear/facilities -1 small blanket -no drying rooms -cancelled my booking because they couldn't pre-charge my credit card
Review 38:-price -location -has all essentials, nothing more, nothing less -good showers/toilets -shed to lock snowgear in -common room with fridge
Review 39:I got food poisoning from the spring rolls downstairs in the restaurant. This ruined the last 2 days of my trip
Review 40:It was a great location and staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 41:Weak wifi connection, thin mattress, unfriendly and challening stairs for traveller with big luggage bag.
Review 42:Very Friendly and helpful staff (thanks George), very basic need for a night accommodation, clean bathroom and toilet. Good location for those who plan to visit Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Close to the Ski lifts. Meet our tight budget.
Review 43:very cold, the thin blanket cannot keep me warm..the shower water was very cold..the wifi was only accessible around the front door.. the stairs were unfriendly for large suitcases...we cannot lock the dorm door since we checked in late and did not receive the key...
Review 44:a funny experience there. we three arrived at zermatt very late then no staff working there any more. and i found two messages attached on the front door telling me about our room and bed number. and it seems no need to lock the front, thats cool
Review 45:Ignorant people with no care for other residents . The hostel needs some management at night because folk staying there become a rule unto themselves.
Review 46:friendly and helpful staff.
Review 47:The showers were freezing...there was a hole in the wall because of renovations. Mattresses were extremely thin...and the blankets were HORRIBLE....felt like prison blankets.
Review 48:The guy at reception was super friendly and helpful...even gave us extra blankets at night. He really made us feel welcome!
Review 49:The price does not include bed sheets and the rooms are very cramped. The beds in my room were meant to be arranged as bunks but did not sit safely on top of one another. There were no private washing facilities except the showers and even they were in a mixed-sex block. The internet connection never worked although the hotel over the road did! There were no self-catering facilities and when we were there, the restaurant / bar was closed. Try the Brown Cow Bar in town for a modestly priced meal.
Review 50:The location is fine, not too far from central Zermatt. If you need cheap accommodation then try it but see limitations below.
Review 51:It was hard to find the location. Room b was so cold even in August. The room was too small for 2 beds. It was in the basement. So I couldn't see outside. not clean.
Review 52:The hostel was close to the gondola. I arrived late at night. I called and asked if it's ok to arrive late. The clerk waited for almost 30 minutes.
Review 53:Everything else. This is a poor accommodation even considering the hostel standards. This is a old house somehow converted into a pub and a hostel. Our twin private basement room was tiny and almost all the space was occupied by the twin beds and the drawers. There was no space or equipment to hang clothes. You need to dump them in the drawers. The only tiny window above did not have curtains. The quilts provided by the hostel was itch and may not be clean. The toiltes were just beside our room as it is in basement only. In the basin only dish washing liquid is there. The toilets were clean though but it depends on the people staying in the hostel as the staffs probably clean them only once. The showers were pathetic. Water was clogged in front of the shower cabin. The showers did not have any place to keep soap or shower gel. I took a shower raly morning and it took almost 5 minutes for the hot water to come. The doors were almost transparent with a dirty curtain between the door and cloth hanging area. The space was tiny and the door did not have any locking system from inside. They allowed me to check out very early by throwing the key through the space below closed recepion door. The only good thing about this hostel is the price which is cheap in Zermatt standard but costly with respect to rest of the world.
Review 54:The location and wi-fi.
Review 55:The temperature of the hot water in shower room cannot be adjustable, so the water turn out to be not hot at all. The room for three person is not spacious so is not convenient for moving around.
Review 56:If you are a budget traveler, Matterhorn Hostel is definitely the choice. There are a lot of shower rooms and toilets available. The room is clean too .
Review 57:Dont get placed in basement next to stairs. It was horrendous! So much noise from the spiral wooden steps going up the side of the room. The noise continued until past 3am! Place looked as though it could have done with a good clean too.
Review 58:Ideal for value for money trip to Zermatt.
Review 59:Poor facilities such as showering area Smalller size of room compared to the pictures posted Only microwave for self cooking
Review 60:Great location
Review 61:No kitchen favility Small and dark room

Review 70:The hostel's price is reasonable to stay in Zermatt.
Review 71:Place is very nice
Review 72:Very cold in the room, only one plug for 8 beds, no kitchen and one very bad kettle for whole hostel.

Review 75:Toilets and bedding facilities could be further improved.
Review 76:Price
Review 77:Room was smelling. Very far from rail station.

Review 92:Easy and chip... But a shower room is bad.
Review 93:The staff there is nice.
Review 94:Heater was not working on a cold night, Bed not comfortable, Blankets old and thin
Review 95:far away from station, long walk, bus stop nearby but stop very early and with low frequency, high stairs to walk up, uncomfatable bed
Review 96:nothing
Review 97:Mattresses and availability of staff
Review 98:The balcony
Review 99:booked a double room and got indeed a room for only us two but it was a dorm with 7beds and barely the space to move!
Review 100:The upper beds are very low to the lower bed, makes you cannot sit up straight.
Review 101:Low price Great location Super friendly staff
Review 102:No sheet for the blanket. Room was very full.
Review 103:Way cheaper than anything. Ok location.
Review 104:Nothings
Review 105:Cheap and comfortable
Review 106:the place is not very clean and it smells badly
Review 107:good location and a very cheap place in Zermatt
Review 108:The hostel suites only for bag packers
Review 109:Guy at the reception desk was super friendly and helpful
Review 110:A bit annoying small things that you expect at hostel, but for this price it is quite expectable.
Review 111:Very good price for this location.
Review 112:Few sockets per room.
Review 113:The staff is excellent!
Review 114:Facilities are little bit poor.
Review 115:from Matterhorn, it is very close.

Review 117:Dirty and cramped
Review 118:Location is far but near to Matterhorn Ski lifts
Review 119:Value for money
Review 120:It was not very clean.
Review 121:The location close to the center of Zermatt. In a very nice village.
Review 122:We were put at right at the top (very stuffy) and it was boiling hot. The blanket wasn't great.
Review 123:Location and friendly staff
Review 124:Everything
Review 125:The staff is really nice and humor; The window view is wonderful; I thought the location is a bit hard to find but it is actually good.
Review 126:I was there to see the town and go up into the mountains. The location was perfect - half way between the train station and the station for the Bergbahn to the Matterhorn. And places to eat or drink just 5-10 minutes away. Simple but adequate hostel bunks.
Review 127:No one in the reception if it is not the check-in or check-out time.
Review 128:Lower price. Good location. Helpful staff. It is a basic place for staying one night.
Review 129:The heater works awfully, was frozen out in the night.
Review 130:location super good, just in front of Matterhorn. The staff very nice. The price is super good
Review 131:there is nobody for the reception from 11 a.m to 16 p.m. my id was in the reception, and i must leave without my id card. i wrote a message but nobody reply me a message terrible
