Reviews for The Devon Valley Hotel

Review 1:The only problem with the swimming pool was that around 17h00 the sun was gone...

Review 2:An old style hotel in a beautiful valley. Every look is worth a picture. Good breakfast with very friendly staff. In the restaurant they serve a varietal of dishes with a mediterranean touch. The rooms are spacious and very clean.

Review 3:Staff are fantastic, very personable and make sure they have your personal attention. Food in restaurant is very good. Great entertainment area to have sundowner drinks. Rooms comfortable and clean. Little far from shops but great location for winelands. Staying in central Stellenbosch is not worthwhile. Could do with spa treatments which is something others mentioned while there.

Review 4:The restaurant was disappointing compared to the rest of the hotel facilities.

Review 5:The overall atmosphere was good, staff extremely friendly, rooms clean and stylishly decorated. Our kids received a present which was useful and highly appreciated. Overall great experience..

Review 6:Service was not good, and wouldn't say the stay was value for money.

Review 7:Restaurant food was good, wine-by-the-glass menu was disappointing. Location was really nice to get into Stellenbosch and surrounds.

Review 8:The hot water in the bathroom was only lukewarm. Not very pleasant in the middle of winter! I complained twice but unfortunately it was never sorted.

Review 9:Very comfortable bed, spacious room, tasty food and friendly staff. Also extremely tranquil with wonderful views.

Review 10:There was not a thing that we did not like about this place. Would stay there again.

Review 11:Efiicient and helpful staff. Excellent buffet breakfast. Views that are picture prefect. Close enough to Cape Town to allow easy access but a world apart for pace.

Review 12:Bed was not particularly comfortable and the room in the old part of the hotel at the end of the corridor somewhat noisy

Review 13:Good food and helpful staff from a hotel set in a great location

Review 14:We could not drink the home grown wine at the dining table - it just was not available. But we could later buy it by the glass at the bar

Review 15:The staff always willing to make one feel important and go out of their way to provide the service we requested

Review 16:Why some of the staff is in such a bad mood in the morning.....to bring some toast and eggs should be not such a problem.... WiFi is very slow

Review 17:The rooms are very nice and big enough also for a longer stay

Review 18:Only criticism was the white girl assistant at the pizza bar who glared and never smiled. Looked as though she didnt want to be there. really miserable

Review 19:The complimentary upgrade and champagne on arrival and friendliness of staff

Review 20:Shower has no pressure and no constant temperature; as a compensation, the bath was great

Review 21:Superb setting Excellent staff, neither too much nor too little Excellent food Free WiFi Comfortable bed Nice and quiet Great bath

Review 22:Being a 4 star hotel in the vinyards, a wider selection of local wines by the glass would have been nice. There is a good selection of wine by the bottle.

Review 23:Peace and quiet, away from Stellenboch town noise, but close enough to go to a restaurant in town. Beautiful gardens and magnificant mountain and vinyard views. Well-appointed rooms.

Review 24:The food in the restaurant was not good value for money, and the coffee was disappointing. The venue is looking a bit tired and may need a little maintenance. It would be nice to have DSTV channel 101 too.

Review 25:The staff are really friendly, and the check in process was really efficient. We loved the bathroom. The lavender garden outside the room was lovely.

Review 26:Everything in the hotel is perfect, but the best of all is its setting: out of this world! It was not the first time we came to this place because you never get tired of the view of God's Eden! And we will be back again! Anna

Review 27:Bedroom had a terrible creaking floor (adds character and ambiance perhaps to the rustic surroundings?) and the hook of the curtain was hanging off the rail,

Review 28:The stunning views from this hotel and the peace and tranquility of its setting are absolutely outstanding. The staff were extremely helpful and the food was excellent.

Review 29:- You would do well to try any of the other local top end hotels where a room will cost you either less or you get a much higher quality of stay/experience for the price. Honestly it is way overpriced!! - The reception was mediocre and the room and feeling in the hotel was definitely 'tired' and in need of an upgrade/update. - I arrived and had a shower and the drain was not working, it flooded the whole floor. I told the management on my way to dinner and they said they would immediately take care of it. Two hours later I returned and nothing done. After further complaint they sent a housekeeper who dried everything up and when I asked about the morning and the drain when I shower next she shrugged her shoulders!! - None of the expected personal touches at this rate ie flowers/chocolate in room, anything special - my feeling was of a room booked last minute via booking.com and they were happy to take my money...!!

Review 30:Restaurant was good Location is beautiful

Review 31:but did not enjoy the misadvertising regarding fireplaces in the bedrooms, and the dirty toilet and shower when we checked into our room.

Review 32:enjoyed our stay, beautiful location, friendly staff and lovely rooms

Review 33:My friends who stayed in smaller rooms were not so happy with their rooms

Review 34:Vineyard luxury suite amazing room and view

Review 35:Not great value for price

Review 36:Location

Review 37:Extremely helpful and friendly staff. They went out of their way to make our anniversary holiday special!!!

Review 38:There were no cups or coffee sachets in our suite

Review 39:Charming venue. Friendly staff

Review 40:Staff are great

Review 41:Nothing

Review 42:Amazing hospitality and stunning room

Review 43:Outstanding staff who make everything worthwhile.

Review 44:Service was outstanding

Review 45:It was great,we would have liked to have been there for longer tho.

Review 46:Had to ask for towels after the had been cleaned. TV stations very limited.

Review 47:Beds were very comfortable, food was excellent, service was very good.

Review 48:Food was excellent and hotel delivered what it advertises.

Review 49:The fire alarm kept going off.

Review 50:Everything: the staff the welcome, the food and the rooms all outstanding and value for money

Review 51:Spent 2 nights here in Feb and really enjoyed it. Lovely location and great breakfast outside on the terrace.

Review 52:Basically liked it all

Review 53:View, location, great room

Review 54:location

Review 55:Great reception person, Ondela, and bar-man Tinashe

Review 56:Awesome location, delicious breakfast and very spacious room with a breathtaking view! I will be back!

Review 57:The Pizza,

Review 58:Very clean, old school hotel. The pool, the Breakfast.

Review 59:Location of the hotel

Review 60:I wish we could have anything from the restaurant menu for room service instead of the more restrictive menu.

Review 61:Everything

Review 62:Inadequate signage from the main road

Review 63:Room was comfortable. The staff were excellent. Lovely setting

Review 64:Dinner The food was average

Review 65:Pizza :) Live music Scenery Staff Service

Review 66:Beautiful Vineyards right there! Champagne tasting around the corner! Great biking/running area!

Review 67:Excellent views, comfortable stay and friendly staff. Breakfast very good.

Review 68:Wine Tasting at hotel had little variety.

Review 69:Food Rooms Fireplace in room Service

Review 70:No issues/complaints!

Review 71:3rd visit to Devon Valley and will continue to visit from time to time. We enjoyed our stay. Thank You.

Review 72:Rooms were very cold, and the hot water took ages to get hot. Showers badly designed. Management complacent

Review 73:Food good in restaurant

Review 74:The room service for cleaning rooms was a bit varied in time and sometime unexpected.

Review 75:We had an amazing time. The room was perfect, very comfy and of the best standard. The staff was great and we had an all round awesome time. Will definitely recommend to my friends.

Review 76:We were having dinner and before we started desert, the staff began clearing tables and setting up for breakfast. This was very off putting and we decided to have our dessert in the bar area.

Review 77:The room was big and the bed comfortable - we had a vineyard view.

Review 78:Dinner was OK but v pricey, wine list excessively priced, bar lounge staff allowed noisy v young kids to invade the only adult private area on offer indoors. So not great as an eat in evening venue.

Review 79:Comfortable room, excellent breakfast, friendly helpful staff.

Review 80:While the sheets were of a superb quality we were disappointed that there was no top sheet. Otherwise, everything was great.

Review 81:The karoo lamb rack at Flavours Restaurant was superb as well as the hazelnut parfait. The gas fire place in the vineyard luxury room was great for chilly autumn evenings.

Review 82:The location in the vineyards, overlooking the beautiful Stellenbosch Mountains. It is rural enough to be out of the hustle and bustle of town, yet close enough to get to town in a jiffy!

Review 83:Having to compete with large groups/functions for service and space. Parts of the hotel are in need of updating. The Vineyard rooms are a bit more modern and away from the noisy areas. We stayed three nights and there was a large group staying each day and a big party at the weekend.

Review 84:Everyone was very helpful and it's a lovely relaxed location and beautiful gardens. The vineyard rooms are comfortable though everything needs a bit of an update compared to other hotels for the same price. They had a good light food/snack menu with lovely freshly cooked salads and pizza. But the pizza was only available at the weekend.

Review 85:The room was smelly and the bathroom requires a full makeover. Unfriendly staff at the breakfast buffet and gardening work was carried out during breakfast hours leaving guests enjoying their coffee in a very noisy surrounding.

Review 86:Beautiful surrounding and mostly very friendly staff. The room had a lovely smal veranda.

Review 87:Rooms serviced after 3pm No mirror in room for ladies to sit down and do make up Everything is getting tired Ie-old and gardens a bit neglected Booked out 3 days early

Review 88:Front staff and manager Christopher very friendly and efficient

Review 89:The front desk was a bit overwhelmed when I was there and also the wait staff. Busy time of the year.

Review 90:The setting is beautiful and our room was lovely. Their breakfast was great.

Review 91:Can't think of anything. Great place.

Review 92:Beautiful vineyard view room with fantastic view and well appointed. super nice bathroom. Good food in the restaurant. Very nice wine tasting and friendly staff. Excellent walks in the area. Great value for money, will return.

Review 93:Everything was superb at this hotel and nothing was too much of an ask. We received complimentary wine at check-in, the location was beautiful and our room was amazing!

Review 94:The service at breakfast was terrible, the waiters had no sense of urgency. The rooms we comfortable but a noisey, you could hear the people in the next room, sometimes if felt like they were going to come through the walls

Review 95:Your hotel is in a beautiful setting.

Review 96:No espresso bar for flat whites in the morning and no on-site massage available.

Review 97:We loved our room (#28). The bath tub was amazing and so were the decorations and furnature. We booked a wine tour through you and our driver, Clinton was top notch.

Review 98:Although well appointed, and comfy, the standard rooms seemed a little small. We upgraded. But really, not a serious issue.

Review 99:Nicely situated, with beautiful views, only minutes from great wine estates. Comfortable, friendly, genuine feeling. We liked it more than many of the ostentatious edifices which abound in the winelands.

Review 100:Frankly the hotel was a disappointment. We had booked a Vineyard Luxuryroom a treat as we came to the end of our tour and I’m afraid the hoteldid not live up to expectations. The hotel appears to finds it difficultto accommodate independent travellers, concentrating instead on largecoach parties touring the Cape Winelands. Following a scatty check-in wewere left to wait for over a quarter of an hour before someoneremembered to show us to our room. We were then left to deal with ourluggage ourselves. The room was fine and very comfortable, although thefolding partition between the bathroom and the bedroom may not be toeveryone’s taste and the turndown service was erratic. Breakfast was anacceptable buffet, although it would have been much nicer if staff hadconsistently offered a pot of tea rather than pouring from a vacuumflask. However dinner was poor with a choice of either another buffet ora very limited a la carte menu. Situated some way out of Stellanbosch itwas a long drive to eat in the centre of town. The walks through thevineyards advertised on the website were another disappointment. Two ofthe three were closed, and we paid 10 rand each (pensioner rates) forthe rights to walk the third, although we were warned that it was badlysignposted. It was! I am sure the hotel is fine if you are travelling ina large party and staying perhaps for a single night. If you are anindependent traveller it’s probably not the best choice.

Review 101:Minor detail- I was allocated only one normal teabag in my room.

Review 102:The room was beautiful, the staff friendly and the breakfast excellent. Lovely quite setting in the countryside.

Review 103:We upgraded to the Vineyard rooms but it was on the first floor which does not have a stoep. There were rooms available on the ground floor.

Review 104:It is a quiet place and very lazing.

Review 105:Signing & directions to hotel from the town (Stellenbosch). Roomcleaning staff leaving window open in ground-floor rooms. Smallmillipedes invading the room.

Review 106:The location. The friendliness of staff

Review 107:No mirror in bedroom and not able to get to a plug to use electrical hair items Staff not good at noticing you need attention and slow with attending to you in the diningroom

Review 108:The setting

Review 109:My luxury room didn't have a safe and the air con was not working so I had to make do with a small fan which was not ideal.

Review 110:The staff were friendly and always happy to assist.

Review 111:Apart from our booked room not being clean (which was sorted out to our satisfaction straightaway-we were moved to a different room), the hotel seems a bit dated in places. The pools were not cleaned, gardens quite overgrown. There is no service at the pool which we would expect at 4 star hotel.

Review 112:Lovely location for an away-from it all break, the views are splendid. Food (Flavours restaurant and breakfast) is excellent. Staff mean well but could do with some managerial direction, i.e. slow service, lack of pool towels etc. Would thoroughly recommend the restaurant, especially pizza nights on Fri/Sat nights.

Review 113:Dirty carpet in the passage. Mold in the shower. Creaky wooden floors in the bedroom. TV not working (however, were offered another room but impractical to move rooms at 00h00) Restaurant and housekeeping staff a bit on the shabby side with their appearance and average in their service.

Review 114:Friendly reception. Good food at the restaurant. Beautiful panoramic view from the terrace. Spacious bathroom, comfy bed.

Review 115:A bit run down. Service very slow both at outside lunch and dining room. Garden a bit too wild and unkempt.

Review 116:Lovely setting & nice room - good reception and bar areas.

Review 117:Most of it. The room did not have a mini bar as I was told when booking, The room was a lot tinier than shown in pictures relating to the room, pictures also showed doors opening onto a private deck, for the price paid, didn't even have a minibar, and the room was just big enough to fit the double bed... extremely disappointed. For the same price, I could have gotten an apartment at the waterfront overlooking the harbour, or a room at the hilton. and many more luxurious options in cape town.

Review 118:view from reception, lounges

Review 119:The food was rather heavy and too traditional

Review 120:The breakfast was very good and it was very nice to have it on the terasse. The room was quite and clean. There own vine was very good.

Review 121:The rooms were a little stale and were designed for business/conference users. It's not a great hotel for holiday makers.

Review 122:It was excellent value for money and had a very good restaurant

Review 123:everything was amazing from the welcome to the dinningroom allwonderful. The chef Ranshaw was particularly outstanding i am gluten intolerant and he personaly oversaw everything and did it all for me. He was charming, polite and professional and we will definitely stay the again, particulary to enjoy the chefs hospitality and professionalism.

Review 124:we had the honeymoon suite, which was a very romantic and cosy room. facilities such as fire place, big bed, big bath and fantastic view. the breakfast was also excellent. the hotel is a little bit out of town, but the silence in that countryside pays off.

Review 125:The rooms in the main hotel have pre-fab walls and are not very sound-proof.

Review 126:Great location in Stellenbosch Winelands, friendly personnel. The room we were allocated had only a shower - on requesting a room with a bath we were given a larger room with a great bath and a large walk-in shower - thanks!

Review 127:We went there to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary. Everything was great - from the staff, surrounding, food etc. We will definitely be staying there again in the future!
