Reviews for Spier Hotel
Review 1:No bad experience but if I was being picky I would say the room needed freshening up a bit.
Review 2:Lovely location and the room/suite was vast. We spent New Years Eve there and had a lovely evening
Review 3:Only one issue was that the fridge did not work in our bedroom after reporting this, we hoped they would exchange.
Review 4:The swimming pool area is a lovely setting amongst the agapanthas. We enjoyed the bicycles & visiting the wine tasting room. We bought "Secret" - very tasty! We had a roof room with views of the river - beautiful scenery. Lovely furnishings in the hotel & great breakfast. My husband enjoyed the hot chocolate!
Review 5:Dinner menu a bit limited however quality of good was superb.
Review 6:Beautiful suite. Loads of room. Quality wines at unbelievable prices. Excellent breakfast.
Review 7:Room was noisy no soundproofing.,was woken up at 4am by people talking in room below. Buffet poor, like cooked on braai stringy and no flavour. Can see attraction if you've got kids but not otherwise. Preferred ambience of other wineries I visited in the area.
Review 8:Nil
Review 9:Ease of proximity to Cape Town and airport, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, stunning accommodation, beautiful surrounds, variety of on site restaurants and activities.
Review 10:The only thing we would want to improve is the pool water. It seems to be a common choice in SA to use unclear water, but it just doesn't feel pleasant when you can't see your own feet. We stayed at more affordable places in the area with chlorine pools which looked far more appealing than the pool at Spier. For a 4 star hotel at these rates, this was (in our view) a disappointing feature.
Review 11:We really liked the corteous and enthusiastic staff, the breakfast and the spacious and well-kept room (with a huge bed).
Review 12:This is a wine resort for the masses. A bit like Disneyland and lacking the original charm of the private wine estates. This is clearly a place which the owners hold to make money. Unfortunately, the food is terrible. Since Spier is in the countryside, this is a huge minus. Compared to how wonderfully one can eat almost anywhere else in the region, the quality of the food is very poor indeed. As a result, you have to drive into town to get dinner (which is not exactly what you want to do when you book a wine resort...). Staff availability after 8pm is basically zero (none of the service numbers responded, so you better have no need for service after dinner...).
Review 13:Rooms are very spacious; pool area is large and nice to hang out
Review 14:Buffet dinner is pretty average - food is over cooked and bland. However the food ordered off the menu is good.
Review 15:Great location, lovely restaurant terrace, rooms are spacious and well furnished. Lots of nice things to do - wine tasting, walks in the gardens and the birds of prey centre. The Spier shiraz red wine this year was superb.
Review 16:Large groups of tourists travelling together can get a bit overwhelming and noisy as they don't always respect needs of fellow guests.
Review 17:The setting of everything within the estate is great. The hotel rooms are set outside with lots of green areas and quite private, while very spacious. Staff was super efficient and friendly, the food was great at the hotel, and wonderful at Eight Cafe. There's a river, sprawling lawns and gardens, artwork, wine tastings, spa, bird sanctuary, so much to do for every age group. Bridgette, Neliswa, Jenine, Devron, Babalwa & wine stewart at hotel restaurant were outstanding. Management is involved constantly and ensure guests are satisfied at all times. You don't park at your room, but a golf cart takes you around in need. This did improve the overall appeal, as no speeding cars could disturb guests.
Review 18:Everything has been though of and great care is given to every inch of the farm. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed all the activities they had to offer. Breakfast was amazing!
Review 19:The fact that only the hotel restaurant was open. They could inform us when I made the booking. I specifically asked if 8 is open. They understand that if the restaurant is open for private function it means it is open. I mean open for all.
Review 20:I love Spier and recommend it to my family and friends. I like the restaurants on site, the activities and the gardens.
Review 21:It was pretty fantastic and a great value. Hard to find fault. No gym, that was about it.
Review 22:An elegant winery hotel with lots of family stuff to do -- bikes, movie night, sports field, segways. Big rooms. Great food options and food. Huge breakfast selection.
Review 23:Local staff in kitchens and housekeeping too noisy, shouting loudly when not necessary as they were standing next to each other.
Review 24:Garden terrace room, beautiful gardens
Review 25:Nothing to dislike at all...
Review 26:Everything, what is there not to like. Good food and wine, great accommodation. The best setting.... lots to do and experiance.
Review 27:gnats a bit annoying but I guess its part of the package
Review 28:friendly staff good service - made be feel as if I was not in South Africa good food room very "comforting" beautiful surroundings - loved the protea and agapanthus gardens catered for the needs of both a middle aged working mother ( peace, tranquillity and beautiful surroundings and wine!) and a teenage daughter ( wifi access, good food, comfortable room)
Review 29:Rooms a bit old fashioned e.g bathroom
Review 30:Friendly and helpful staff. Good sized garden room. Large estate with good support to move around. Excellent restaurant. Good facilities for children.
Review 31:I would suggest to offer more information on the estate at check-in. A sommelier at the hotel restaurant would also be a plus
Review 32:Very charming place, perfectly mainteined. The room was really spacious with a king-size bed and a fire place. Bathroom was also big with both bathtub and shower plus a window. Breakfast was excellent!A huge variety of food both sweet and savoury plus a great selection of fruit. We also had dinner at the hotel restaurant, they have an interesting menu and the wine we had (Pinotage) was superb
Review 33:Staff on reception could have been a little more welcoming at check in. A few other staff members across the estate also seemed to lack a little enthusiasm which is a real shame as it's the only negative point about this otherwise great place.
Review 34:Great facilities, so much to do. We did a few different wine pairings at the wine tasting bar which was a really good experience and we also participated in a Segway tour of the vineyards which was excellent! Lovely big room too and a vast selection for breakfast.
Review 35:Some people may not like the fact that you have to walk quite a distance from the parking/restaurants to the rooms, especially when you travel frequently to and from the parking. They do have golf carts on site with friendly staff to take you wherever you need to go, but just something to keep in mind. Had a great experience regardless. Rooms are a bit dated, but still clean and very comfortable.
Review 36:Had dinner at Eight restaurant one evening which was amazing - all produce comes from the Spier farm and it was delicious! Good selection of wines available from Spier off course. Had a great evening.
Review 37:Think the floors of the rooms cvould have been updated and some of the furniture a bit dowdy.
Review 38:Staff, things to do, value for money, facilities for my mother who had need of mobility assistance.
Review 39:The spa treatments were nice, but I think we were expecting a bit more. We paid for the most luxurious one, and it fell a bit short with our expectations.
Review 40:It was stunning. The wine was wonderful. We loved how family friendly it was and how clean the facilities were. The green hills were incomparable. We really appreciated their commitment to sustainability and the local artists works were inspiring. We bought quite a bit of works!
Review 41:Dining room noisy had a large group of overseas guests who were given preference over local visitors . We were informed that we could only part take of the buffet as they were too busy to served from the menu . The buffet was in my opinion substandard, staff lacked on hygiene stands re the buffet table . The matter was brought to the attention of management and they apologized.
Review 42:Room and staff were great
Review 43:Poor internet cover across hotel, the Spa was completely booked up so for people on a short stay it is not an option. Refurbishment of the hotel lobby was noisy.
Review 44:Beautifully designed rooms. Great food and wine. Very helpful staff.
Review 45:The conference lunchtime food was unimaginative and pretty much the same each day.
Review 46:Staff were good and attentive. rooms were roomy and accommodation pretty good. Tea time Snacks were pretty good. Facilities for conference were good
Review 47:Mavis as swithboard was an absolute star, I asked if I could email her directions to my parents next stop. She printed it out, sent to my parents room and phoned me back to confirm. According to my parents the food at the restaurant was fantastic. Thank you for making their stay as pleasant. C
Review 48:The restaurant staff were not that attentive and you can hear the vehicle noise on the raod
Review 49:The atmosphere was great, it was quite and the fact that it in a wine farm was calming.
Review 50:There was construction during our stay, although obviously improving the infrastructure.
Review 51:Spier is in the heart of the Winelands and hence a good base to explore the area. The hotel has extensive gardens with a lot of attractions. Cosy fireplace in the lounge to try the fine wines!
Review 52:Service and amenities were excellent and the staff did much more than what is normally expected - they are a great asset for the hotel. Right from the cook in the kitchen at breakfast to the front desk were excellent
Review 53:Stunning all-in-one winefarm experience, with a choice of restaurants, wine tasting, outdoor activities eg jogging routes and bicycles, beautiful gardens and centrally located.
Review 54:All was well. Some extra condiments during breakfast.
Review 55:The staff was very friendly and most of them had gone the extra mile to assist us. Room is spacious. I visit Spier often and it is my preferred accommosation when I am in Stellenbosch. Staff noticed preferences.
Review 56:Couldn't connect to Wi-Fi with my Android phone
Review 57:Everything was absolutely amazing. Service was fantastic, everyone from the front reception staff through to the kitchen staff were great.
Review 58:The hairdryer plug didn't make contact - had to hold the plug with one hand while drying my hair with the other - very annoying.
Review 59:Rooms are spacious and clean.
Review 60:Just a bit upset that the restaurant/kitchen manager would not steam clean our 3 month old's bottles due to health regulations. There was no microwave available in our room to do it ourselves.
Review 61:Fantastic for a family trip. Didn't have to leave the estate to do activities. Kids loved the Eagle Sanctuary. A good relaxing weekend.
Review 62:Everything about Spier is an absolute pleasure. .it's our home away from home. .the tranquillity and serenity and beauty of the mountains and vineyards around us are just sooo awesome. .the birdlife and plantlife make for a photographers dream..I would recommend this hotel hands down. .xx
Review 63:My daughter - 6yrs old - and I stayed at Spier for 1 night this week on route to Betty's Bay ~ and we loved it - I would have liked to stay longer. We loved the picnic and play in the park. Our room was lovely and our dinner (8 restaurant) was divine. Overall a highly recommended stay - we will be back
Review 64:Staff not helpful and disinterested. No help from parking with lugguage. Not shown direction to room. Was supposed to get downstairs room but did not.
Review 65:food
Review 66:This is definitely a business hotel. This wasn't a problem but the hotel itself lacks a little character because of this. We also found the service of the staff in the evening for dinner was extremely slow and on a few occasions had very little knowledge of the drinks menu, especially the cocktails.
Review 67:Nice and quiet around the pool area so never a problem getting a sunbed. The bedroom was lovely and spacious, as well as the bathroom. The bed very comfortable and free wi-fi available across in all areas which was good. The food was delicious and wine tasting was fun. Make sure you book a table at Eight if you want to eat outside as it gets busy.
Review 68:Nothing
Review 69:Everything. The room was fabulous, the bed was really great quality, the food, the wine tasting, the staff. The plus was the decoration of the main building, what a treat to the eye, such an attention to details and creativity
Review 70:Hotel was clean and very comfortable, staff were all very pleasant and helpful, substantial breakfast offered with plenty of variety. Overall very pleasant stay. Would certainly book again
Review 71:WiFi limit...250MB limit is a bit strange...just make it free.
Review 72:Location is great if you want to have a relaxing time. Staff are friendly, helpful & actually care about making your stay memorable.
Review 73:Hotel very busy and consequently pool and bar areas congested. Staff not very pro-active or attentive. Breakfast was a scramble for places and no recognizable process for handling tables allocation - became a free-for-all.
Review 74:Location and layout of hotel within the Spier estate. Surrounding views. Style and variety of rooms types. Gardens and outdoor seating areas. New Year event setup and management was first class - excellent evening and very well handled.
Review 75:There was nothing that we did not like. We stayed at Spier for a week and enjoyed every moment of it.
Review 76:A beautiful estate with a rich history. The staff was very friendly and always willing to assist promptly. The restaurants offer a range of excellent food. The breakfast is beautifully presented with a wide range of fruit, hot and cold foods.
Review 77:The public day-visit areas were thankfully far away from the hotel, because some day visitors came across as a bit rough and tumble sleeping on boulders like fat dassies. The public facilities could simply never live up to the luxury hotel experience in any case. Perhaps the hotel should revamp the public areas to match the hotel, but then again, I spent little time in those areas, so I may be wrong.
Review 78:The hotel itself was great. The food was also fantastic - notably the evening barbecue- and breakfast buffets. The outside dining areas of the hotel are marvellous on a starry night.
Review 79:Nothing.
Review 80:The whole experience was great. Food, drinks, pool, staff, facilities, eagle experience, boa constrictor cuddle, my group had the time of their lives. I'd recommend Spier to everyone.
Review 81:Sadly the mini bar was not stocked - only one bottle of Chardonnay (which we don't drink). Water sprinklers where turned on while at breakfast and pointed directly at our garden facing patio - straw hat, magazines, clothes got wet. Slight oversight, nothing too major.
Review 82:Everything is always perfect when we visit Spier. Breakfast - always so much variety and lovely with piano being played in background. Rooms very clean and comfortable. We will be back again and again
Review 83:the village environment is lovely, but if you have someone staying in the room above you who makes a lot of noise packing a suitcase and walking around in high heels early in the morning it can be disturbing.
Review 84:Lovely large room, lovely grounds, lovely reception staff, very yummy dinner in the EIGHT restaurant, good breakfast choices, comfortable bed, lovely little terrace on our ground floor room.
Review 85:TV too small & too few channels
Review 86:Location Rooms in "Village" concept Small village swimming pools Great breakfast Large comfortable rooms Free wifi
Review 87:Unit felt a little tired, needing freshening up,paying attention to detail, ie cobwebs in corners, no bottled water, tiled floors stained and looked like it need a scrub, room guide pages missing.
Review 88:Large spacious rooms. Good showers.
Review 89:When we booked in .They said we must wait for someone to take the luggage. After 20 minutes we decided to carry the luggage our self from the car. And it was quite far from the parking to the room . Passing quite a few of the staff on our way to the room, right past the receptionist. And we had to do this twice the evening. And twice the morning. Wanted to swim in the pool in front of our room and it was green and dirty.I love the place but had a bad experience that time.regards Francois van wyk from George.
Review 90:We asked for early check in (9am) and received our room at 1:30pm. The receptionist was less than helpful, she did not offer to store our bags and did not offer us a welcome drink (we only know this because a different lady eventually checked us in and she went out of her way to welcome us). We found two cockroaches in our bathroom. Being the flying type they could have come in the open window but we also saw a dead one on the floor, suggesting the room had been sprayed for bugs (so maybe had an existing problem?). There was an outdoor cinema set up which was great...if only we knew about it. There was no information about it so by the time we stumbled on it the movie was halfway through. We tried to go wine tasting at the tasting rooms. We were told that there were two parties (8 people total) ahead of us on the list and that they might not finish before the venue closed in an hour and a half. How is it possible that in a huge tasting room with multiple staff they cannot accommodate more than one tasting at a time (baring in mind we were a party of two)? Overall we had a great experience, but the small details need to be worked on if they ever want to achieve a higher rating. Working in the hospitality sector myself, I cannot imagine overseas clients being impressed with the negative experiences that we had.
Review 91:Bed is amazing!! The rooms are beautiful and even include a nespresso machine. The natural beauty in the surroundings is great. We had a delicious picnic lunch from the bistro which was nice although you need to bring your own blanket(!?). Our dinner at the hotel restaurant was also very good.
Review 92:1. Porters not readily available and limited golf carts for porters. 2. Waiters too busy to give their full attention in the dining rooms during breakfast and dinner. During the festive season more staff needs to be employed.
Review 93:1. Quiet and peaceful surroundings 2. Opulent décor 3. Warm and friendly staff 4. Superb breakfast 5. Accommodation spread out 6. Exquisite gardens
Review 94:> The booking for dinner especially for the residences. > Jogging route were blocked and gate were closed while we were advised at the reception that we can run. > Lack of Gym.
Review 95:The rooms are looking rather tired and desperately needs a make-over. Our poor waiter in the restaurant had no clue what the items on the menu were - it turned out she was moved from room service to help out for the evening, and had no training.
Review 96:Staff was friendly and the food in the restaurant was very good.
Review 97:Service at the restaurant for dinner was extremely poor. We waited ages to firstly receive our menu then waited a long time for the bill. There should be more staff employed.
Review 98:The accommodation was really nice and comfortable. Beautiful surroundings and good food and wine tasting. The brrakfast was really good too.
Review 99:The room cleanliness was poor not serviced when we arrived. We had to ask for towels, replacement of items in the mini bar. Up to the last day they could not get it all right.
Review 100:The setting.
Review 101:Almost nothing, besides that we stayed in the non smoking zone, but despite our neighbourhood was smoking cigars in the common garden.
Review 102:There is a lot of attention from the staff to the guests. The Food is of good quality as do the wines. Going to Stellenbosch takes only 10 minutes, a lonely town with a good atmosphere.
Review 103:Very minor issues only; the guest documentation was incomplete and didn't appear to current in places. We also thought the mini bar was complimentary as it was only stocked with a single bottle of wine and some water each day, but this maybe because we didn't study the details enough in the details enough. However we believe it needs to be clearer and recorded rather than being charged on an "honour system" when checking out. I have no issue with paying for what was consumed but it would have been more professional if it had been more clearly logged.
Review 104:Clean rooms, nice reception and dining area, exceptionally helpful staff. A huge plus to us was that as we arrived early in the morning, the hotel allowed us access to enter our room early - no fuss and no charge - absolutely great!
Review 105:Courtyard Pool was a bit cold me.
Review 106:Wonderful venue...also great location for the organic markets around the corner and down the road. Nice walks around the estate. One really needs at least two days to explore all the wonderful activities in the area.
Review 107:Everything was perfect!
Review 108:Absolutely wonderful room. The entire property is just gorgeous and offers a range of places to eat and drink. Great value for money.
Review 109:Didn't like the comments posted here which are way over the top on what individuals don't like!!
Review 110:Would take to long to list everything...the staff, food and rooms. 10/10 on everything.
Review 111:Already done a survey, a little disappointed in the attitude of staff at restaurant 8 due to shift change, this comment was picked up immediately and was attended to with haste and an apology, together with the delivery of 6 bottles of Spier wine. Totally unexpected, but shows that staff have their finger in the pulse at all times and attention to complaint is totally above excellence. Well done Spier, we will/are highly recommending you to others and will definitely return
Review 112:Everything was a treat, from the on line booking, fantastic service and staff at reception, accommodation un-faultable friendliness of all hotel staff and generally the happy atmosphere of the place
Review 113:Ordered white wine that could have been chilled a bit more.
Review 114:Rooms are spacious. Staff well trained and go out of their way to assist. I felt really valued and pampered. Food was excellent
Review 115:They weren't very helpful arranging tours. We ended up travelling in to Stellenbosch and doing it ourselves.
Review 116:Beautiful location. Loved the owls! Lots to do.
Review 117:Upstairs room .. prefer ground floor .. bit still lovely space .
Review 118:Lovely apartment rooms with patio ..on to garden .. relaxed environment .. friendly staff . Awesome pianist playing at breakfast . Great food options for breakfast .. oh loved the fireplace 2
Review 119:Loved the fireplace and good organic food. We loved the strawberries we had for breakfast, lunch and supper. Absolutely delicious. Thank you to your amazing staff who made us feel like nothing was a problem.
Review 120:Could not watch KykNET channel. After midnight some of the guests were very noisy- for about an hour!
Review 121:Very comfortable, spacious room with fireplace. Excellent breakfast
Review 122:Staff were very friendly and warm! Uncle Jackson's pancake's at breakfast were superb - loved by my daughter! The good wine and dinner was excellent! We enjoyed the fireplace in the room.
Review 123:A bit boring big hotel.
Review 124:Very friendly staff Good for kids Big property. Great location close to nice wineries and restaurants.
Review 125:The staff was more than friendly and made us feel so relaxed and welcome.
Review 126:Difficult to escape noisy children whilst eating evening meal.
Review 127:Splendid architecture in a beautiful, natural and peaceful setting.
Review 128:Stairways in the rooms can be cleaner
Review 129:The restaurant service, the food and the wine
Review 130:Breakfast requires organising and waited 45 minutes for my cocktail at the pool.
Review 131:Room was great
Review 132:Service at restaurant and bar was often slow.
Review 133:Beautiful grounds. Nice sized rooms. Lovely art. Very good for families.
Review 134:That I couldn't get more than a night
Review 135:The bike rides
Review 136:A staff at hotel restaurant was unhappy to serve.
Review 137:To rent a bike is good for children. There are good restaurants.
