Reviews for The Stellenbosch Hotel

Review 1:Shower mixer variable to difficult to get the right temperature. Although we were under the impression there was secure parking and on our arrival parked our car in their underground car park, after we returned from the evening out we were then told there was no room in the car park. We were allowed down only when we said we were leaving at 7 am. The car park was very full and the space tight, resulting in the car being damaged by a pillar when trying to park in the limited space. We had a lot of baggage in the car which is why secure parking was important to us. We didn't enjoy breakfast, it was all buffet and not even a pot of tea was brought to our table. The restaurant was very noisy

Review 2:The room was clean and comfortable, the shower room clean. Good central location.

Review 3:That the restaurant hadn't re-opened by the time of our visit, so we couldn't test it.

Review 4:The room makeovers from our previous visit really are a major improvement. The staff were really friendly and helpful with regard to the disruption while the final works were being completed on the new restaurant. The underground carpark is a real boon with the parking congestion in old Stellenbosch.

Review 5:At the time of booking, the building work should have been finished before the start of our stay. It wasn't. No compensation offered or given. Staff should have warned us about the mosquitos which were awful. No deterrents provided in the room - we had to request it. Similarly, had to go to reception to get a key for the (very small) safe - barely large enough to fit a mini iPad, let alone a laptop. Initially they only provided us (3 people in 2 bedroom apartment) with one key - which is nonsense given that you need a key fob to get in and out of the building. Only managed to get one more which was inconvenient. Given the overall quality of food in South Africa, breakfast was poor (although staff there were very good). The management of this hotel needs to take a serious look at their customer service levels and processes. Avoid until they've sorted themselves out! There are lots of small guest houses nearby which are probably a lot better!

Review 6:Location was very good. Very close to centre of Stellenbosch.

Review 7:Restaurant and bar still under renovation after fire

Review 8:Great location, free underground parking, lovely atmosphere sitting out n the quiet street for vreakfast

Review 9:Paper thin walls. Was woken at 5.45 by my neighbour discussing his dreams. Connecting doors between rooms means that EVERYTHING is audible. Would not stay again

Review 10:Great location

Review 11:The assigned bedroom had a musty smell, transfered the another room. The roof leaked in the second bedroom. The wifi did not work. We were then transferred to a third bedroom where the wifi did work. The shower nozzle sprayed water onto the ceiling, very uncomfortable shower due to leaking nozzle. We tried fastening the nozzle. The breakfast was very average and we opted to not have breakfast at the hotel. The guy frying the eggs did not know how to produce a properly fried egg and his scramble eggs were dry and over cooked. All he needs is proper training. The pastries and cold meats looked very tired too and the bread was not fresh. Two domestic toasters to toast the bread. All round it made for a very average breakfast. One or two rather unfriendly staff standing around during breakfast doing nothing other than having private conversations. Why all the staff??? The manager apologized. Gave us two packs of biltong and offered us a 10% discount on our stay but we would have preferred not having to point out their lack of operational issues. All of the above could have been avoided if everything was checked beforehand to ensure that the customer is not unnecessarily inconvenienced. We simply cannot recommend this establishment.

Review 12:The beds were comfortable and the third room offered was spacious although the top half of the windows could not open. One friendly young guy over breakfast.

Review 13:Our room was quite small (1st floor Rooms 28-30). The space is taken up by the low ceiling. It is not ideal for a tall person.

Review 14:Parts of the facility are under renovation, this is well managed. Our room was newly refurbished and very clean.

Review 15:Taxi's are hard to get, prepare to wait easily half an hour if you want to go anywhere else and a bit expensive. There was construction going on that was not a problem itself, but there was quite loud noices during the night which was not very pleasant.

Review 16:The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Internet works well and it is situated in the middle of town with shops and restaurants near by.

Review 17:The hotel is still in renovation works. The room was ok but other spaces were old. The price is high for what you get.

Review 18:Excellent location. The room was clean and the bathroom is renovated. A good car parking was offered.

Review 19:Breakfast is dismal to say the least. Rooms are quite small & cluttered with large unnecessary furniture which meant lots of bumps & bruises. The hotel can be quite noisy and added to that are renovations that are in progress. There seemed to be an issue with the deposit, the hotel deducted much more than they should have but made no move to remedy the situation.

Review 20:Location is great. Walking distance to cafes and restaurants. Hotel staff are friendly & rooms are neat and clean. Secure parking is provided.

Review 21:At this price (1200R/night), the facilities and the breakfast are sub-standard. There's not enough parking for all guests, and our room smelled of fresh paint while one is not allowed to open the street-side windows for security reasons (no burglar bars).

Review 22:The location couldn't be more central.

Review 23:The underground parking situation was a nightmare. You need to book a bay, which I did, but they didn't record the booking. You need to phone the receptionist (intercom not working) to ask them to open the gate for you. They take ages to do so.

Review 24:Having breakfast at a table on the pavement outside... like a Parisian cafe... was lovely.

Review 25:That the first evening our reserved parkings that were arranged to be six in a block reservation, were not all available when we returned as informed to the hotel from the party at 01h30 in the morning. 2 cars of guests had to park outside and I did inform the security, who made arrangements for the morning for the situation to be corrected so all our cars could park inside as requested. The fact that Cats restaurant was still being renovated, as we were looking forward to eating dinner there the Saturday night. Also breakfast room was bit cramped, when we all sat at long table for breakfast ,as we had requested that to be arranged. Most of the guests were tall and big men and the space at table was not enough to sit comfortably.

Review 26:A big thank you goes tp Gerda at reservations who provided exceptional service via email, on the phone and in person when I went to see her. She even provided a lovely gift for my husband who was celebrating his 50th birthday on the day of arrival. All our requests especially for the size of beds etc were met and made most of our guests especially the discerned business men travelers happy and they really enjoyed the stay for the weekend at the hotel. Our 7 rooms thanks to Gerda arranging it , were ready as requested for early check, despite the hotel being fully booked, as most of our guests were arriving from long travel from the airport and needed to freshen up and enjoy a bit of R & R before going out and enjoying beer tasting and then going to the birthday party.

Review 27:The breakfast was not great at all, the cold meats looked old and the mushrooms and bacon were not replenished We booked 2 x two bedroom apartments, one was MUCH nicer than the other, this was disappointing for the 4 people staying in the inferior one

Review 28:Location

Review 29:Renovations going on so the restaurant wasn't in use and the breakfast wasn't up to standard, but nothing serious and all will be fab once renovations completed! Parking is a bit of a problem!

Review 30:The location , staff and room were all great.

Review 31:Not long enough!!

Review 32:Couldn't rate this stay or the hotel staff highly enough! The booking agency did not communicate all of the necessary information, and the staff bent over backwards to resolve the situation promptly, in a professional manner and in excellent humour.

Review 33:Old hotel in the middle of endless renovation. Next to our room they installed a noisy alarm system and no one could overcome the noise! We had to change rooms

Review 34:Great location just in the middle of....

Review 35:We didn't know that there are extensive renovations going on at the hotel. Work starts at 8am so you have to be up and out early. The website says that work finishes mid year which i would expect to be June or July but NOT September

Review 36:Breakfast and the location

Review 37:Cold shower, nasty smells (apart from the renovations which are going on), malfunctioning TV, being asked to pay before the stay (this is meant to be a 3 star not a youth hostel)

Review 38:The breakfast

Review 39:We loved everything about the Hotel, but what really stood out is the attitudes of all the staff. Excellent service, friendly, helpful, exceptional, thank you so much. It felt like home.

Review 40:a little tired and shabby. Room was nothing like the picture on the web . The walls between rooms were too thin. If this was after renovation then it's pretty poor.

Review 41:Lovely hotel with lots of character in perfect location. Nice area to walk around in - plenty of interesting shops, galleries and restaurants to visit. Friendly and helpful staff.

Review 42:Booking.com did not note on the website about current renovations being done at hotel/ Booking.com most likely did not forward request for room with a bath.

Review 43:Friendly ,well trained staff. Proximity to night life and restaurants.

Review 44:The extra bed in the dining area was a shame, but did not ruin our experience. I felt the breakfast area was messy on the Sunday and Monday, versus the attention to detail on Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Review 45:Loved our apartment A12, with space and laundry facilities. The staff on Thursday, Friday and Saturday were AMAZING. Went above and beyond to assist us removing 11 bikes off the trailer in order for us to park our trailer into the basement. They arranged breakfast packs for the early leavers taking part in the cycling event at Coetzenberg. Overall, a wonderful experience. Reception was outstanding on all days.

Review 46:So many corridors and doors going everywhere. The WiFi reception is horrible in the departments!

Review 47:The hotel is in the centre of the town, even though in general is a good place to stay, you expect more.

Review 48:Excellent service. Very helpful when we miss stored our credit card and accessed the surveillance tapes to see we had put it in my husband's wallet instead of mine on admission.

Review 49:Bed was awful and lumpy and pillows of lowest quality . Does not have a welcome feeling. Feels more like it caters for students or single travelers. Our room had a cold and clinical feeling to it .

Review 50:Location of the property is in the centre of town close to everything.

Review 51:after moving the room was an upgrade, so much better, but the TV appeared to have been removed from the room. I could n't get the wifi to work either. the breakfast room was cold as the main door to the street was open.

Review 52:the welcome, the comfy bed, the willingness to move me when the heating & fridge weren't working in my booked room

Review 53:We weren't warned about load shedding - put up a roster and advise guests, especially for foreigners who don't understand. Renovations but sure they will be worth it in the end :)

Review 54:Walking distance to shopping, restaurants and old style historic feel

Review 55:Air conditioning was from the 1970's

Review 56:Walking distance to all the central restaurants, shops and cafes. The recently renovated bedrooms mean the bathrooms are brand new.

Review 57:My husband and I had a one night break to this hotel and it was fantastic. The room was beatifully decorated with old furniture in keeping with the style of the Hotel. Service was friendly and warm. Everything was perfect!

Review 58:The nozzle of the shower was not effective and the quality of the food served at breakfast was disappointing.

Review 59:The location of the hotel is excellent and the rooms we stayed in were very spacious with very comfortable beds

Review 60:Loved the expanse, convenience and comfort of the two bedroom apartment. Memories of cosy, chilly mornings sipping endless cups of coffee with my friends while listening to the mellow sounds of Stellenbosch waking up...

Review 61:We were in self catering apartment above the arcade, which was noisy in the evening, and wifi was not good.

Review 62:Loved the quaintness of the hotel, lovely courtyard, and amazed at how diverse the place is from the inside.couldnt ask for a better location.

Review 63:facilities need updating. Safe never worked properly, even after repeated requests. Very poor wifi, could never get a connection unless standing in doorway. Very noisy due to tables that are set in hallway for diners.

Review 64:Great location, staff was friendly, easy access to downtown.

Review 65:The air con leaked water on the carpet in the night. Too many staff at breakfast - felt uncomfortable Booking.com booked a double bed, not a twin as requested.

Review 66:Location Room availability

Review 67:The location was perfect to explore Stellenbosch and to eat out at fabulous restaurants without driving anywhere. The hotel was charming and very comfortable!

Review 68:Renovation of the dining area and bar is currently underway but this had no impact on my stay.

Review 69:Location, friendliness of staff and their willingness to assist, hotel parking, wifi was good, room was very comfortable, proximity to Java coffee shop (same building).

Review 70:Air conditioning didn't work so used windows.... Which was great for airflow but not for insect bites during the night. Also we went with the least expensive room which turned out to be quite small... Fine for two nights but still quite tight. Others might want a larger room..... Otherwise excellent.

Review 71:Wonderful historic hotel at the heart of Stellenbosch

Review 72:No parking, plus told could not park in underground parking because it was reserved for other paying guest as if I was staying for free. When I eventually got a parking I had to leave my keys at desk and could not go out again with my car otherwise I would not get parking again. The next morning when I went to collect the car keys they put my key into wrong persons box and what if they gave my key to that person and he stole my car. They say room service on Internet there was none. I would never ever stay there again I would rate this hotel as 2 star max

Review 73:Free wi fi

Review 74:Recently refurbished room with excellent bathroom but too small for comfort Noise from adjacent building work

Review 75:Location, staff and breakfast all excellenu

Review 76:The refurbishing was disturbing. I chose the hotel for the restaurant, bar and patio and it was non existing during our stay. We were promised secured underground parking. There were fights about this every time. We had to park a big combination in the street. Unacceptable. We booked 4 rooms with 7 people! Table lamp in one room was faulty from day one. Never repaired. Will Never go back.

Review 77:The only thing that we liked was the good location.

Review 78:Staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. We were expecting the renovations to be only inside Jan Cats restaurant & cause minimal disturbance. When our expectation was not entirely met and The Stellenbosch Hotel was not able to give us another room, they assisted us in every way to find alternative accommodation. We could not have asked for more. Will definitely stay there again.

Review 79:Their basement parking was full and had to park a couple of blocks away on the street. Eventually got parking opposite the hotel around 8pm.

Review 80:The room was fairly quiet and no disturbances

Review 81:They lock the hotel at night, but there must be an easier way to get hold of the night manager on duty than to run around and ask security guards to help you find him. Maybe a night bell or something....

Review 82:We were told by the receptionist that there would be a charge if we list either the safe key or the room key and asked to sign a form to agree to this. I felt I was back at school!

Review 83:Good location in the centre of town. The hotel has character, though sadly the restaurant was being refurbished when we were there.

Review 84:Parking full had to park 1.5 km away and staff didn't care, kept me waiting as well and when returned to reception nobody was there in the middle of the day.

Review 85:There's no shaver-socket in the bathroom.

Review 86:The hotel's location in Stellenbosch is second to none - everything the town has to offer is walking distance from the front door. Safe & secure parking in the basement was great.

Review 87:The pillows were terrible - so slept terribly every night. Staff were a little of fish when we took wi-fi codes. There is parking but it took too long to get in and out as a staff member had to come and open the gate each time(the one time we waited over 5 minutes) breakfasts were not good at all - we ended up going down the road every morning. The reception staff had attitude but the lady cleaning the room wAs wonderful. Cellphone reception is very bad. It is overpriced for what you get.

Review 88:The location is fabulous! It's truly in the centre of the town The Internet wi-fi is good. The bed is comfortable.

Review 89:Staff in charge of breakfast needed more training. Small room, no bath, no mini-bar, considering the restaurant and bar was being renovated. No other common area to relax, e.g. lounge area.

Review 90:Location is excellent. Historically beautiful building.

Review 91:Not at all like the photo's on website. Very small bedrooms. A tiny balcony. Kitchen not well equipped. Parking garage inconvenient. Breakfast poor. Aircon only in lounge area, bedrooms very hot and stuffy.

Review 92:The location is great, right in the middle of Stellenbosch.

Review 93:The appartment looked nothing like the pictures on the website. The furniture is old and worn out, it was that good we booked for 2 nights and came back to Franschhoek on the 2nd night.

Review 94:The location is superb, That is it,

Review 95:Very friendly staff, great breakfast selection despite restaurant being closed. Room very much as described, small and cozy but very clean and more that adequate for a 1 night stay! Great central location.

Review 96:It was located opposite the lift and next to the basement parking entry gate which was very noisy. Some of the apartments are privately owned and the night we stayed there we had rowdy students keeping us up all hours of the night. The breakfast was very average and attention to detail is lacking. The breakfast room had flowers on the fruit juice table which had died a few days ago and the water stagnant in the vase.

Review 97:The apartment was clean and neat with modern appliances. The staff were friendly and approachable.

Review 98:The staff were friendly and really helpful with all my requests, and even left a note and some chocolates in our room as I'd mentioned it was my boyfriend's birthday. We had a lovely room on the second floor facing the courtyard accessible by the lift or stairs. The restaurant was closed for renovations when we stayed so we had a buffet breakfast served in the conference room which was pretty good as far as buffet breakfasts go.

Review 99:The dining room is being renovated so breakfasts weren't very nice

Review 100:The Stellenbosch hotel is perfectly situated in that everything is within walking distance - very convienient.

Review 101:The manager was having a disagreement with service provider at the reception desk when we arrived and it made the atmosphere most uncomfortable. Guests don't want to know about in house problems.

Review 102:Hotel is central and the apartment we had was well equipped for a self catering stay. It was very clean

Review 103:The room we were allocated did not at all match the room description we found on the booking.com or the hotel websites. It was very small and no mini bar provided. This complaint was partially addressed by a partial refund after the event.

Review 104:The excellent breakfast served by friendly and efficient staff is certainly commendable.

Review 105:The only problem was the hot water... But that was sorted out promptly

Review 106:The staff were friendly and helpful, the location is excellent ! We couldn't experience the restaurant as they were doing renovations

Review 107:only one key between 4 people is simply unacceptable for a two bed apartment. whilst the restaurant is being renovated the food arrangements are poor....it is better to go to the food shop next door

Review 108:Excellent location

Review 109:we were given a small room that was giving directly on the street and we did not have hot water! we mentioned this in the evening and only the morning after when we still did not have hot water, we were offered to take a warm shower in another room. Not a very pleasant experience, considering the hotel is quite expensive.

Review 110:the location is good

Review 111:Breakfast was very dissapointing, only booked because it was inclusive however poor back up plans in a conference room with a cold buffet.

Review 112:Really a wonderful relaxing break, however with no restaurant at present due to renovations I don't think you can sell bed and breakfast as an offer, rather dissapointing breakfast/they could suggest guest have breakfast at a local cafe at no charge rather, many hotels do this in hermanus.sandi brown

Review 113:Lack of information provided on rooms - room 6 has 2 single beds, but a lot more space than room no 28 which has a double bed. If we knew room 6 had a bit more space, we would have swapped. Important to provide as much info as possible at check in. Also, the WIFI is confusing having a dash inbetween the numbers - nowhere is indicated that it should not be entered.

Review 114:Friendliness

Review 115:Staff we slow to answer e-mail. Slow to allow access to secure car parking. Our request for 2 bottles of still water in stead of 1 still one sparkling were ignored.

Review 116:The location. Secure car parking.

Review 117:tiny, tiny room same size as my ensuite bathroom at home.Would not stay there for free. breakfast unedible went out for breakfast despite having paid. I have visited 80 countries, this IS the worst hotel at which I have stayed . Could not get in elsewhere due to New Year.

Review 118:location, & great safe parking facilities.

Review 119:My Wife has a wheelchair, you need to get all the doors and entrances flushed over as there was wooden batons at many entrances. Also the lift to the car park has NO Ramp from wheelchairs or the poor porter has to get off the lift at the ground floor and walk down with the Trolley of Cases......!!!

Review 120:Location, room and Breakfast were good

Review 121:Freshly painted rooms insufferable and aircon has no outside vent so only circulates same air all the time. Pillows very hard and uncomfortable. Windows cannot open wide and the bit it does, makes it a safety hazard as there are no security bars and certain rooms overlook the street.

Review 122:Location, location, location

Review 123:I booked and paid a premium for a Classic room which is advertised with a queen or king size bed. We had a double bed which is advertised for a Petit room. When i complained I was told the hotel was fully booked and the manager would be advised. I was expecting an e-mail today when the manager came back on duty but received no communication.

Review 124:The smell of the freshly renovated room.

Review 125:The room looked totally different than from the pictures, it was really shabby and old. We expected alot more for the price we payed. Furthermore the staff was not polite despite our best efforts. Rather book a guesthouse in Stellenbosch, they are much friendlier and the rooms are so much better

Review 126:The location is very good

Review 127:We had a suite and the sitting area couch and chairs were dated and uncomfortable.

Review 128:We stayed for 1 week and liked being in the heart of downtown. Close to shops and restaurants, thus we could walk everywhere. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The complimentary breakfasts were delicious. We had an amazing time, thank-you!

Review 129:We had a loft room that seemed fairly new. Although beautiful, we did not have a hairdryer, and the phone was not working. The fact that my feedback is this petty is an indication of how good the venue is. Parking is limited. By the time we went for breakfast, the muesli and bacon was finished! Most of these issues can easily be addressed.

Review 130:The hotel is centrally located, so we could walk wherever we needed to be. The hotel was clean, staff were efficient and friendly. The hotel itself has traditional and rustic finishes, speaking of long tradition and history - we really enjoyed the restaurant setting too.

Review 131:Room was great. Underground parking was critical as in a busy part of town but worked well. We had a wedding party with 6 rooms and were assisted with whatever we needed on the day to make things run smoothly. Java Café downstairs served awesome food and had good vibe which meant we did not venture out to the surrounding cafes and restaurants all of which looked interesting.

Review 132:Requested double bed, got 2 singles pushed together. Outside lighting in courtyard was a bit bright into our room at night. (stayed on ground floor)

Review 133:Great location. Good breakfast. Staff very professional and friendly. Will stay here again.

Review 134:The television programs were very limited. Nothing for children to watch if.

Review 135:Location was perfect. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was neat and clean and had all the amenities that one needs.

Review 136:One of the bathrooms very small, not much room to move around.

Review 137:Hotel Central and very comfortable. Kitchen well equipped, washing machine and dryer a great asset when travelling.
