Reviews for Thermae Palace

Review 1:We had one of the best rooms in the hotel, with a balcony facing the sea. The room was huge and well furnished, the bed was very comfortable. Even in winter, the views of the sea, the tides and the changing light are an unforgettable experience.

Review 2:Not so keen on the weird on the landing carpets.

Review 3:We love the grand 1930's architecture. There is a real sense of history. You can imagine the rich and famous from a by-gone age holidaying here.

Review 4:Rooms and general hotel is in need of refurbishment... all looking a little tied and dated, compared with other hotels in the area.

Review 5:Staff at check in were helpful, bed was good

Review 6:Hotel staff rather uninterested in their guests! Technical issue in the room which never got solved despite reminders

Review 7:Location, decor, history of the place Room with sea view

Review 8:1.Receptionists were not friendly and courteous. They didn’t say hello. Sometimes they were even IMPOLITE. You could see that guests’ requests bother them. Obviously they just do not care about customers. 2.Room furnishing seems old and out-of-date, and not in the nice and cosy way. Lifts are also old. 3.Bed linen SMELT STALE. 4.Laundry is not available. 5.If you want your room to be visited by a cleaning lady, you have to ask at the reception (see point 1). «Please clean my room» sign may be ignored. 6.But then the room was filled with the smell of cleaning chemicals and we had to air it. 7.No Wi-Fi in one of our two rooms. 8.Front door is made of glass and as there is no sign on it, you may not see it, which will lead to you hurting your forehead. This happened to one of our party :( 9.You should pay for breakfast (and other meals) in the restaurant right after your meal. You can’t sign the bill to pay later. 10.Walls are so thin that you can hear your neighbours talking, sometimes even what they say… 11.There is no night porter (no one at the reception until 7 am). 12.There are only two lamps lighting the room; no chandelier. 13.The phone in the room was broken. Sometimes we couldn’t open the door from the first attempt (the lock is magnetic). 14.Minibar is empty. (On the other hand you can use it as a fridge).

Review 9:1. Location. Sea view.

Review 10:Wi-Fi is very unstable and slow. Reservation system for parasols and beach chairs is weird and unsatisfactory: formally all chairs are booked all the time, in practice there are always free chairs. The hotel as a whole needs maintenance.

Review 11:Impressive monumental building located at the beach. Large room with sea view and nice bathroom. Excellent bed. Friendly service at breakfast buffet.

Review 12:The wifi didn't work in the room. There was a TV on really loud next door, although reception did knock there was no answer so we were left with the noise until the early hours.

Review 13:Located on the beach, the hotel had fantastic views.

Review 14:The two little reception desks paired with unfriendly staff are a catastrophy and not really appropriate to this kind of hotel! Minibar yes but empty! No staffing during the night, vending machines for drinks and a broken money changer! Sauna only on demand and at extra cost, no swimming pool, breakfast available for 20€ - that tells you all about this quite expensive hotel!

Review 15:Rooms are spacious and comfortable!

Review 16:Despite a beautiful location everything was in a state of molder, decaying concrete and a very musty smell. It is really sad to see that such a listed building is maintained so bad. Besides that the facilities were very poor. Except for a restaurant there was nothing. The hotel is marked as 4 stars, but I would give it no more than 2. Absolutely no value for money

Review 17:The sea view is beautiful

Review 18:Staff in restaurant didn't smile"and not polite "would of stayed here again but because of the staff I will have to think about it"

Review 19:Lovation

Review 20:After an exhausting day of driving were very please with the hotel until we got into our room, which smelled very unpleasant of damp and mould, the pillows were stuffed with cheap lumpy foam, the furniture was very outdated, and the shower was useless it would not stay up and you had to hug the bathroom wall to get wet. The windows were disgustingly dirty as we were not facing the sea there was no excuse for this, worst of all none of the bedside lights in the room were plugged in and after a 15 minute struggle we managed to get one plugged in, very disappointing stay

Review 21:Location was excellent and the staff were very very pleasant. the building looked very impressive from a distance

Review 22:Poor wifi signal in our room. Eating breakfast with some flies around us.

Review 23:The room faceing to the sea and beach gives excellent viewings. Helpful staff and comfort bed.

Review 24:Hot weather, room temp was uncomfortable.

Review 25:Good location with immediate access to beach and short walk into town and seafront restaurants, secure parking.

Review 26:1) The full price was blocked on my payment card immediately after booking. 2) We had booked a room with a sea view but when we got to the room, it faced the yard and we did not see the sea even partly. After I complained, the room was immediately replaced for a room with a sea view.

Review 27:Location (right on the beach promenade). Flair of luxury, which, however, was apparently in full swing long in the past.

Review 28:Room was clean but needs renovation. We ordered breakfast in the room (25€ extra is expensive) and this was con firmed. But 20 min. later they phoned that it would not be possible. By then we only had 15 min. to come down and have breakfast in the restaurant.

Review 29:Beautiful location. Parking

Review 30:Lack of hotel facilities for this star rating

Review 31:Good sized room, clean and comfortable. Restaurant meal prices for the evening meal was comparable to other establishments.

Review 32:It's not the hotel, it is the town. Oostende is not such a nice place, ugly houses and not cosy at all. All there is is the walk on the beach.

Review 33:The location right on the beach was nice. The room was clean and big and the breakfast was good.

Review 34:Unfortunately no cocktail menu in the bar and a very small selection of drinks available, but perhaps this will improve in the Summer? The bath could definitely be larger considering the size of the bathroom, but this is just a minor complaint.

Review 35:Great location. We stayed in an ocean view double room, this is very large, huge bathroom and very large private terrace with lounge chairs. Breakfast was very nice, beautiful fresh fruit , cheese and pastries as well as hot scrambled eggs and bacon.

Review 36:Breakfast was 20 euro per person, even for our little, 4-years old girl. A first star hotel requiring a frequent traveller to pay in advance; very bad impression. The room was very cold.

Review 37:The mini bar was empty. The restaurant was very good but very expensive, and it was not possible to charge the invoice to the room. The breakfast schedule could be extended half-hour longer

Review 38:Although the exterior is still rather poor, we have appreciated the quality of this beautiful building and the way its interiors have been refurbished. We have also enjoyed the very good comfort of our room as well as the great view from our balcony. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The staff was professional and has responded our requests. However, we believe that a warmer attitude towards guests would significantly improve the overall good offer of this hotel.

Review 39:No king beds, only single beds. We were told on the phone that a child bed could be wheeled in. Upon arrival we had to take a big three single beds room and pay extra. When asked if we can have a double duvet the response was: "that's too much hard work, we can't do that" The rooms are very very old and tired. It really feels empty and not cosy at all. This is definitely not a four star, two at the most when judging by the room only. It's not because you put some "Bulgari" shower gel in a room that it't a four star all of a sudden. The staff in the evening at the Brasserie wasn't very friendly and quite snooty to be frank. They really act like it's some sort of an elite place, I'd like to encourage them to dine and sleep in some other places around the world so they can see what hospitality actually is. I can imagine that in the 1940's this was a nice place with an elite status but those days are long gone. I'm a very frequent traveller, stay in hotels all over the world and hardly write a review because when I get what I pay for I don't see the need to comment. This was not the case here I'm afraid

Review 40:Location Breakfast Historic building The lady who hosted the breakfast in the morning was wonderful

Review 41:When I checked in Breakfast was automatically added to my bill 20 Euros (about 30 USD) per day even though I said I would not be eating at the hotel after the first day due to meetings! The receptionist (female, very cordial) said they would not charge if I did not partake of the (buffet) breakfast. When I checked out after 3 days (early, before breakfast was even being served), the receptionist said there was nothing he could do about the charges for the two days I did not have breakfast (about 40 Euros or 60 USD). He was to the point of being rude about it and made me think that there are nicer places to stay in Ostende with more helpful staff. The exterior (my balcony for instance) could use a little maintenance. Too bad the venerable old girl is showing her age in the hotel rooms and should be maintained to the same standard as the meeting rooms.

Review 42:Nice location, right on the Ostende beach. Beautiful view from my Seaview Room. The dining room was very nice. The Dover Sole was one of the best I have ever had (better that in France, even). The meeting facilities were very nice.

Review 43:Hotel is in good location in Walking distance to Restaurants along the beach. The Hotel had it's haydays. Room was okay for a 2 nights stay. Parking facilities available, either you drive in through a barrier and aticket machine or apparently to an open entry.

Review 44:The breakfast (no value for money), the too high bed, no bath foam, the rather plain dinner

Review 45:The view, the 'grandeur', the reception at the table, the balcony, the extra pillows

Review 46:Having to change rooms without a good reason. Old breakfast set up and bar area with outside seating was much better not being able to charge breakfast or drinks to room bathroom to dark broken and missing glass on balcony

Review 47:Location

Review 48:No heating when pouring with rain so nowhere to dry anything. Restaurantand bar closed far too early.. Couldnt get a drink after 1030 and nofood after 9! swimming pool closed and was told to use the local pool.Carpet strip broken

Review 49:Great room and view

Review 50:Not really a four star hotel that it claims to be. After 10pm the hotel is locked guests have a pass key to get in so a late check in with no key it is impossible. There is no bar to sit and chat with friends. Only a counter with stools in the one and only restaurant. The restaurant manager was not friendly to a point of being rude. He turned us away at 9.30pm without any apologies, saying the restaurant was closed for food. There was no room service either after that time so we had to go out to a restaurant or go hungry. He was unhelpful when ordering drinks? Breakfast was not included in an expensive room price.......... NOT 4****

Review 51:The location on the beach plus close to the Wellington Race Track. Easy parking. Large bedroom with comfortable bed. mostly pleasant helpful staff. The recent refurbishment is a big improvement, although some parts of the hotel still look tired.

Review 52:having to pay full stay ahead upon arrival; even when having a cappuccino on the terrace at the hotel brasserie you need to pay immediately; standard room has parking view while sea view is main feature and plus of the hotel; extra fees are added ("administration") even when having booked via Booking.com; expensive breakfast for medium/standard offering; no spa; dirty carpets in rooms (i stayed in two different rooms); second room on first floor smelled terribly (mentioned it at reception but nothing was done about it)

Review 53:location, view, room on first floor with large sea side view

Review 54:Staff are young and unexperienced, quite a few students around (who were clueless). Value for money this certainly is not. Separate charges for parking and breakfast, and a tax that was not mentioned when booking. Receptionist did not acknowledge my presence for a full ten minutes while she was on the phone. Ten minutes, yes. This hotel could do with a good restaurant.

Review 55:The rooms with a view on the ocean are superb. There is no street between the hotel and the beach. It does not come better than this at the Belgian seaside. The bar has a very cosy, colonial charm.

Review 56:Upon arriving at 21:55 (weather problems), the doors were already lockedand the phone number didn't work. This was not a good start. My wifeand I had to walk all the way around to the other doors and bang on themto be let in. The receptionist didn't even say "sorry" forthe inconvenience. She just rushed us through the check in and sent uson our way. The restaurant was closed and the front desk was not helpfulwith our food dilemma. The building itself, inside and out, is in direneed of a power wash and deep cleaning! The carpet in the whole buildingneeds replaced. The access door to the beach is an exit only. They triedto blame this on the bad weather, but we think they don't want theguests tracking in sand. So, when your done walking/playing in thesand, you have to walk what seems to be miles to get to the other sideof the hotel. This place is very historic with pictures all over thelobby showing it's chronology, but with no explanation. I had tofind it on Wikipedia and I'm not even sure if it's correct.TheWiFi only worked in the lobby. The staff was scarce and the wholebuilding was eerily too quiet. It seems to me that they're notmaking enough money to run the place properly. It's a shame too, because it could be beautiful.

Review 57:Unfortunately there are only a few good things to say about this hotel. It has tremendous potential and the location is great. The palace isvery spacious and the rooms are big with tall ceilings.

Review 58:Having to pay everything in advance.

Review 59:Spacious rooms en bathroom. Good food. Beautifull building.

Review 60:the carpets are not very clean. also the door of our room was not easy to open and close.

Review 61:the location was great! also the staff

Review 62:- lack of facilities such as a lounge, bar, pool/sauna - lack of quality interior design

Review 84:Furniture in a room. Very poor breakfast .

Review 85:Beautiful building with an amazing architecture on a great location!

Review 86:Location the most

Review 87:Hairdryer did not work, reported on first day but never sorted. They gave me a hand held hairdryer.

Review 88:The location was excellent.

Review 89:The location of the Thermae Palace. This is the main reason why we return to Ostend.

Review 90:Service in restaurant is terrible.

Review 91:need to change furniture very used one

Review 92:Location near the sea

Review 93:Veel te weinig light in de bad kamer

Review 94:View

Review 95:Bad wifi connexion in the room old style

Review 96:bed very comfortable clean

Review 97:Service in restaurant could be improved

Review 98:Location straight out onto the sea, good restaurant and food

Review 99:wifi was not working and we claimed everyday, were promised a repair everyday and...no result...must be a joke!

Review 100:location, breakfast, cleanliness

Review 101:Very quiet out of season.

Review 102:Service, free wifi, room size.

Review 103:they should be some insulation under the patio doors to keep the wind out! put the room frigos back in. spice up breakfast a bit

Review 104:Room heating not sufficent no sw.pool problems entering building at night parking not for free (12 Euro a day)

Review 105:Rooms a bit small

Review 106:Great view, restaurant, location

Review 107:The breakfast is expensive

Review 108:Everything - the terras the most.

Review 109:check in system seems odd.. not very efficient

Review 110:more should be done on maintenance of the hotel/rooms. It's a pity to see the slow disintegration of the building itself...

Review 111:Room size.

Review 112:older rooms

Review 113:neighbourhood, parking

Review 114:- breakfast far too expensive for what you get for you money

Review 115:- beautiful room with a perfect view - newly renovated bathroom

Review 116:need to be remodeled!!

Review 117:no hair drier in room or bathroom

Review 118:Staff were polite and helpful our rooms were large and comfortable the breakfast was exelent

Review 119:The carpet was pretty dusty. No deckchairs on the terrace. The light in the bathroom is a joke. The breakfast service was a disaster, no bacon, no eggs, very little fruits, cold coffee first for the prize of €20. The manager was totally overwhelmed.

Review 120:Very nice located with a terrace and ocean view. Old fashion style hotel with an impressive history. The front desk staff was very friendly.

Review 121:exterior of building requires refurbishment. Carpet in room well worn and stained. Advertising in lifts refers to a now closed restaurant, showing a general lack of attention to detail.

Review 122:Checking in is a bit unorderly. Not a clear system of who is next in line. Also funny that you have to pay € 5,00 administration fee per person, eventhough you booked via internet. That, in combination with € 20,00 pp breakfast costs adds up

Review 123:Location is excellent -direct to the beach and at walking distance to nice restaurants with sea view and to the city centre or marina.

Review 124:wifi did not work very well. the staff in the reception was helpful but the service was very slow.

Review 125:beautiful hotel with fantastic location, two steps away from the beach. nice and tidy rooms and good breakfast.

Review 126:Staying at this hotel made me realize (first time) that staying at a bad hotel can almost ruin a trip. You think that if you have a nice-ish place on the beahc, what could be wrong, and the Thermae Palace explains this.I have never asked "to see the manager" before in my life, and at this place I asked no less than 5 times.I literally have never heard "no" or "I don't know" or "I can't do anything" or "come back to see my colleague I can't help" so many times. None of the staff were able to answer or fix anything. The wifi in our rooms didn't work the entire time. The manager said there was a signal, but it ended at room close to the elevators int he middle of the building (I traced it with my iphone to see where it started) and didn't extend down to the end of the hallway where we were. The restaurant stops serving food at 9pm - I sat at the bar one night form 7 and tried to order food at 9:30 and was refused - given no alternative and NO warning about when they stopped serving.I asked about towels or chairs for the beach and was looked at like i was an insane person - even if they didn't have anything, there is a polite way to answer and give an alternative. When my husband and I wanted to sit outside at the hotel restaurant tables a few times there were no seats even though we were guests - when I asked I was always told sorry no seats, no alternative. The breakfast was expensive and awful. They had those fake eggs and some bacon and then all cold food. When I tried to cancel the second day, they said not possible, only after I spoke to different people three times was I allowed a refund. (And thankfully I did that bc the next morning there was an extremely long line of guests (!) waiting for the inadequate breakfast.

Review 127:there was a nice bar and it is on the beach.

Review 128:price ratio 20 Euros for breakfast, offer very minimal and then present what should be present at 9 am no more no longer available. given the surface what the hotel has to parking, to take another tevragen 12.50 per day, I find a very poor service from the hotel. there is an input option from the beach promenade, but surprising that it can be used up to 22 hours, although you alone with your hotel room card that door to open, after 22 hours, a whole detour should be made to one of the two main entrances to reaching out to the hotel to get ... de prijs verhouding 20 Euro voor ontbijt , aanbod zeer minimaal en dan het aanwezige wat zou moeten aanwezig zijn is om 9 uur niet meer niet meer te verkrijgen . gezien de oppervlakte wat het hotel heeft aan parkeer gelegenheid , om daar nog eens 12,50 tevragen per dag , vindt ik een heel slechte service van het hotel . er is een ingang mogelijkheid vanuit de strandpromenade , maar verwonderlijk dat deze tot 22 uur te gebruiken is , ondanks je alleen met je hotel kamerkaart deze deur kunt openen , na 22 uur moet er een hele omweg gemaakt worden om 1 van de 2 hoofd ingangen te bereiken om in het hotel te komen ...

Review 129:Some renovation may do good. It's such a lovely hotel with lots of charm. No misunderstandings, our room was in a very good state.

Review 130:Staff had a baby bed prepared with everything and even a small towel for the little one. Excellent. We certainly will come back. No regrets.

Review 131:-Up front FULL PAYMENT (take it or leave it) -with just a bare "face-lift" the hotel is in a terrible technical condition; no water pressure; ages before hot water appears; NO electric connector at all in rooms -NO useful amenities, nor public sitting or day- rooms -you need a 'south-wester' looking through the window or you are blown of your socks -Breakfast a ridiculous pantomime -scandalous expensive (442 € compared to 'up to date' Hilton 364 € 2 pax / 2 nights B&B) for a so called 4 star hotel not even comparable to 2 star quality -Staff friendly but barely trained and lacking HORECA experience -NO service communications (or excuses) for all day ongoing "face-lift" works (even over public holidays)

Review 132:ONLY the location
