Reviews for Makena Beach & Golf Resort
Review 1:The snorkeling and water activities were not as great as expected. The ocean water was cloudy because of the wind and the hotel pools are really small.
Review 2:Secluded area and nice sandy beach that is great for family with small children or just a place to relax. Upscale location yet convenient to Wailea, Kihea where there are more people, shops and activities. You do need a car to get around easily.
Review 3:Nothing.
Review 4:The japan garden with koi fish you can feed, excelent breakfast in beautiful place, very friendly staff, spacies and comfortable rooms with big balcony. Watter is available during the day.
Review 5:When we arrived they did not have our booking.com booking in their system even though we gave them a print out of our booking with reference numbers.
Review 6:Quiet & relaxing away from other tourist accommodation.
Review 7:Need better cuisine options. Especially for breakfast and lunch. The ocean front view was not quite an ocean front view and the construction outside was slightly annoying at times
Review 8:The location and staff are excellent. The property is amazing.
Review 9:food and beverage selection at different times was inadequate Food and other services were expensive but maybe not so much for Makena and Wailea on Maui
Review 10:staff were great
Review 11:The pool area was such a disappointment small, kinds cheesy for the high end hotel, and just a small 8 person hot tub.
Review 12:Accommodations were nice, food good restaraunt, staff very friendly. The beach was great the snorkeling tour left fight from beach in front of hotel. Awesome!
Review 13:The building is a little older than most resorts but it was clean and this did not deter from the experience.
Review 14:Location, private sandy beach, every room was ocen view, excellent restaurant, attentive staff
Review 15:I’ve had better breakfast buffets but it was adequate (The “egg lady” was our only unfriendly staff encounter as well as being a poor cook). I think you can get a better breakfast value in town (Kihei).
Review 16:Makena Golf & Beach Resort is one of the best resorts at which my wife & I have stayed in our multiple visits to six Hawaiian Islands. Suggest booking direct on the hotel site. The staff is extremely friendly with a goal of delighting the guest. Room service is excellent (food quality & service). The work out facility is more than adequate. Lots of hi-tech cardio, good dumbbell selection (no barbells) and complete universal facilities. The best snorkeling I’ve ever seen – and I’ve snorkeled around the world. An avid snorkeler can keep swimming north along the shore and see more colorful coral, swim right next to many huge turtles, and see an enormous number of amazing fish. And the Makena beach is perhaps the best on the island. Finally the resort is on Maui. Nough’said!
Review 17:The equipment in the fitness center is old and in bad shape. It's impossible to handle the touching screen on their machines. We tried half of them and always gave up after a few minutes.
Review 18:The hotel has zero beach at high tide and almost no beach at low tide. The ocean is only visible from the bar or ocean view rooms.Location is a bit remote. I a m not a golfer so that may influence. Pool is relatively small. Enjoyed but wld not go back.
Review 19:Overall cost of activities and food at hotel.
Review 20:Location, turtles at the beach front; Interior design of the rooms, simple Island style; Many water sports activities; Early morning snorkel cruise from the beach; Very good dinner at hotel restaurant:
Review 21:The service was exceptional, all the staff made us feel so special. Fe Manuel (concierge) was very helpful and kind. Thank you so much!!! It was a wonderful trip, one we will remember for a lifetime. Will come back & stay at resort.
Review 22:No golf course variety of restaurants Not able to take the lawn chairs passed the sign. Had family with us and needed more room on the beach.
Review 23:Staff, complimentary water and coffee,
Review 24:Wifi is patchy.
Review 25:Great location, friendly staff, breakfast selection.
Review 26:Service was excellent. Everyone was so friendly
Review 27:Meals were expensive
Review 28:Staff, rooms, pool area
Review 29:Everything was great. Nice beach, nice pool, reasonable prices Would come again
Review 30:Location was outstanding. Quiet part of the island. Staff was incredibly helpful and courteous
Review 31:The bellboys/valets are the most precious asset this facility has!
Review 32:Absolutely nothing
Review 33:Everything. This was an amazing place, the best place we stayed in Hawaii.
Review 34:Insect my bad..
Review 35:Everything
Review 36:Nothing!
Review 37:Fantastic resort with excellect facilities.
Review 38:The restaurant, the bar selection, the stores in the lobby
Review 39:The room, the view, the facility. All were first rate.
Review 40:Room service a little expensive, wifi slow.
Review 41:Location is great, excellent staff, good views from the comfortable rooms.
Review 42:Beach was the best early morning snorkel.
Review 43:The hotel was slightly dated...but they can't do anything about it!
Review 44:The staff was great. They went out of their way to make sure I had a good time.
Review 45:That I had to come home
Review 46:We were impressed. Loved everything! Room great, location great! Breakfast out by the lagoon wonderful. All staff great! Great value! We will be back!
Review 47:i booked a room with front sea view. however, when i lived in the room, i found it was partial sea view. called the front desk staff and was told that it is the front sea view indeed and canˊt change. Donˊt know why there is the difference between the booking.com and hotel.
Review 48:location, staff, facilities are excellent.
Review 49:Nothing. Didn't have a chance for activities, but some looked a bit pricey.
Review 50:Free on-site parking. Very friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful, beautiful room with extras. Lovely lanai; overlooking pool. Gorgeous gardens, beautiful beach. Nice on-site amenities. Only there for two days, but would definitely return. Stunning place to stay on the gold coast of Maui.
Review 51:Quite far away from the shops at wailea but they provided shuttle service to the surrounding area
Review 52:We took the partial ocean view room, it was large enough and clean with beautiful view Amazing beach with easy access Water activities Breakfast buffet was excellent
Review 53:Ocean was a little rough in the middle of the day but I guess you cannot control the seas.
Review 54:Bed was comfortable, beach the best early morning snorkel. We had excellent meals. I would go again.
Review 55:The private beach that the resort hotel owns was a pefect place for snorkeling. The boat to the half moon isle for snorkeling and whale watching was from this spot. The staff was super nice and helpful. Food was good too.
Review 56:The staff and guests just seemed so much more pleasant and approachable than other resorts we visited in the area. The location, beach and quiet were ideal for us. We visited the Four Seasons, Andaz and Grand Wailea and just felt more "at home" at the Makena. Less pretentious, less "busy", more relaxing, quieter.
Review 57:The cheapest room is facing to a construction so the views are not nice and they didn't explain it when you are going to book it. The room was very basic.
Review 58:The staff on the beach and swimming pool was excellent. Is a great hotel if you want to enjoy the beach. A molokini snorkel sail boat that depart from the hotel's beach is great and very recommended. Also parking and valet parking is complimentary.
Review 59:Beautiful spacious and welcoming. Away from the crowds. A stand-alone resort with everything available on site including the beach! Very friendly and helpful staff. Great food.
Review 60:Beauitfull location, beautifull gardens, right by the beach awsome snorkling. great restaurant with magical sunsets. Very helpfull staff. perfect place to wind down the end of our holiday. Will definatley love to come back.
Review 61:Not a luxury hotel by absolutely any modern measure. But... Astronomicalprices. The room was dirty (the carpet was irreparably disgusting, roomnot dusted before or during our visit), the equipment was broken (toiletdidn't flush right, shower drain clogged, internet not working), wewasted half a day trying to get them to fix things in the room.
Review 62:Location. This is our favorite part of Maui and it was nice to stay soclose to Ahihi Cove. The staff were helpful, courteous, friendly. Nicepeople, no question at all.
Review 63:No bar until late (not asking for 3 am, but at least 12 am). Having sucha beautiful beach in front is hard to understand why there is norestaurant or bar where you can have dinner enjoying the sea breeze andsunset (the "dinner" restaurant has only some view to thebeach, no terrace). The hotel was "dead" at 10 pm. For theprice paid, some things should be included like snorkel or kayak.
Review 64:Beautiful beach in front of the hotel (very good for swimming andsnorkeling). Friendly staff. Good size rooms, very comfortable. Shuttleservice was quite convenient to move around Makena and Wailea. Freebikes (for 3 hrs). Friendly consierge service which helped coordinatingthe tours or activities.
Review 65:A hot tub would be a good feature I think! The pool was not 'young'family friendly! We did not have our kids with us on this trip (ages 7,5,3) and am glad.....I would hesitate to bring them to this resort as the warmer pool has no shallow end! Also it would be nice to have a little change area or relaxation open air room off the beaten track for spa users with the entire spa being outdoors!! Open air cabanna massages were fabulous but nice place to relax after treatment would be lovely!!
Review 66:The staff was great, the pool area was very relaxing!! Food was good!
Review 67:Bathroom layout was bad. At first we didn't think we had a toiletbecause the commode room was behind the bathroom door. Had to leave thelights on at night so we knew where it was.
Review 68:The wifi with Apple products doesn't always work in the room. But it does work at other places in the resort and the staff was very helpful in getting my wifi working.
Review 69:Almost Everything!!
Review 70:The shower was not user friendly. Poor water pressure. Had to hand hold while showering.
Review 71:View from our room. Bed linens and bed were very comfortable.
Review 72:The lack of newer in room features such as an Ipod compatable radio.
Review 73:This hotel is beautiful! The grounds are very large and lush. The pool is smaller but very nice. The staff where wonderful, friendly and helpful!
Review 74:We had a wonderful time staying at the Makena Beach Resort. It was lovely in every way, in a quiet location beside the beautiful Makena Beach, and a pleasant 30 minute drive to/from the airport.
Review 75:Was lied to at reception stating that firstly that a deposit wasrequired which is standard, then when I was notified by my bank thattransactions for the full amount was attempted as well as deposit, Ispoke with reception again who just said in a rude tone that it wassomething that the computer was "automatically doing"
Review 76:It was quiet
Review 77:The price I paid was outrageous for the quality of the resort. Even witha last minute booking - when you charge $500 per night then you shouldbe able to deliver the service. The staff were not very gracious aboutrequests. First put us in a room overlooking a construction side andcalled it an upgrade. When I asked to be moved it took a lot of pushing. When we asked to stay 1-2 more nights they didn't get back to me forover 12 hours. I booked into the Grand Wailea and have been enjoying thequality of service you expect when paying top prices.
Review 78:The location and scale of the resort. It is a beautifullydesigned place.
Review 79:Received a wake up call that wasn't ordered at 6am. Ruined my day asI was sick and sleep deprived. Contacted the day manager who left amessage that they made a mistake. Didn't offer any compensation(apologies don't count for much when you pay $300 a night for a goodnights sleep).
Review 80:Great Staff Sunday Brunch was amazing
Review 81:Overpriced boring breakfast. Most rooms sold with a sea view actually overlook a construction zone. Then the garden rooms at high floor are a better choice.
Review 82:The sea view if you succeed to get it by paying more. The calm at the end of the tourist road. The small secluded beach. A welcome change from the zoo of other big names hotels.
Review 83:The location of this hotel in the map of Booking.com is wrong!
Review 84:The staffy are friendly. There is free shuttle provided to nearby hotelsand shops. The price is lower than other hotels, while the roomcondition is not worse or even better.
Review 85:1) The concierge made an impression of being reluctant to book a dive trip with a provider that was not on their "preferred list" which I found a little bit inappropriate. 2) Beach equipment for rent (snorkel gear, umbrellas, etc.) is expensive, especially the hourly rates. I found it strange that beach umbrellas had to be rented, but this seems to be a custom on Hawaii.
Review 86:Location of the hotel is great: it is set aside of other hotels in the area and makes an impression of a secluded place. Very good restaurant (Molokini): it can actually really be considered a gourmet restaurant, absolutely great. Very friendly staff. Good beach which is effectively isolated for the use by the hotel guests, because remote and not surrounded by other hotels, which is quite a luxury on Hawaii. We also liked the stand-up paddling courses offered by the hotel.
Review 87:Great service, friendly staff, beautiful location and beautiful room. Location is a little isolated if you don't have a car - but the Resort has a great on-demand shuttle service which will run you anywhere you need to go within the Wailea / Makena area. Good bus service runs from Wailea to any other part of the Island. Explored beaches right along Makena and Wailea - and have to say the beach at the Resort was the best by far.
Review 88:Location Location Location! Makena is truly a stay in paradise. Hotel was equipped with everything one expects from an excellent resort and all staff were very friendly and accommodating. Whilst probably a little pricey for the average holiday maker, we felt that we really received what we paid for. Setting is really romantic with gorgeous, well maintained gardens and time moves at a leisurely pace giving a sense of being away from the world. Fabulous!
Review 89:The stairs decoration and stairs areas were a bit cold and aseptic feeling.
Review 90:The staff was excellent, they really spoilled us and they have been always friendly, with a lot of human touch. The location and the beach is beautifull.
Review 91:Unless you play golf it is far away from anything. It takes about 45 minto drive to Lahaina. Not recomended if you like to go out and enjoygaleries and restaurants.
Review 92:Nice breakfest
Review 93:Although most employees were wonderful, friendly, helpful....one poolside towel/equipment employee was too involved in his own lengthy conversation to help us. Hope he'll be leaving soon so he doesn't mar the lovely experience for others.
Review 94:Really enjoyed the beautiful and delicious breakfast buffet included in the price. This part of West Maui is gorgeous and this hotel feels off-the-beaten-path. The beach and surrounds are stunningly pretty. The hotel has a high-quality feel with beautiful wood trims everywhere -- these have been lovingly refinished and add a lot to the ambience. Diners will especially enjoy the beautiful ponds.
Review 95:I loved how clean the beach was. The staff inside and out was wonderful. The room was fresh and clean. We look forward to staying again. I was hoping for a up date on specials if any in the future. You may find me at kimberlycoers@yahoo.com I wish we had made the Makena Beach resort our stay for the whole time we were in Maui. We will see you again! PS- Loved the adorable puppy named Makena. Look forward to seeing her when she is full grown
Review 96:I was so impressed with how beautiful the Facility and area was. Everyone made sure that knead taken care of. Insist I knew about the shuttle service because I wouldn't of gotten the rental car. There were so many options to do I wish I could of done more. The massage in the cabana was the absolute best. Everyone should do it
Review 97:Very little. A minor suggestion is to offer some breakfast cheeses on the buffet.
Review 98:Very well run. Every staff member was friendly. Good breakfast buffet and very pleasant room for the buffet.
Review 99:Just far enough away from the busy side of Maui, which enables you to relax and enjoy it's serenity. It was great to wake up to the sound of waves instead of traffic. Great golfing nearby, private beach, and the nightlife and shopping was just minutes away. The staff are wonderful! The rooms are clean with great views and in the morning you are treated to birds and a rooster...yes a rooster is out there somewhere, to wake you up. I have stayed at Makena many time with work, and was so pleased it was just as nice when I stayed for pleasure. I will be back for sure...this is Maui!
Review 100:Having to pay $16/day for in room wi-fi was a surprise. There is a hot spot in the lobby, so we used that. Not a big deal for us, but might be for someone on a business trip.
Review 101:Beach, ease of snorkeling and watersports on site, with diving nearby. It was in a relatively quiet area, much calmer than the Kihei area. Lovely hotel, staff was excellent. Quiet, comfortable, well decorated rooms. We had a package with a daily all you can eat, buffet breakfast that was superb! The breakfast satisfied us until mid afternoon. We also made good use of the mini frig in the hotel room and the daily free water bottles.
Review 102:Half of the staff was incredibly delightful but the full other halfwas short, rude and unaccomodating. We are incredibly low key so whata surprise. Also, there wasn't much in the way of dining or entertainment at the resort at all in the evening. One restaurant and everything closed up by 10pm. That also seemed very odd for a "resort" .
Review 103:The only thing that I didn't think was ideal was swimming pool whichneeds a few more bells and whistles. Put a better slide on the pooland the jacuzzi could be spruced up. Put a little spa structure atthe beach!
Review 104:Great place to stay in Hawaii. Clean, renovated and amazing location. Iespecially like that they don't nickel and dime you like the otherresorts that I have stayed. Parking, even valet parking is free! Not soat Grand Wailea. Make that waterslide more of an attraction and GrandWailea won't have a chance. Very personalized service also. Freebreakfast package was great too.
Review 105:I never like it, in general, that I have to pay for internet accessin the room.
Review 106:The atmosphere, it is a rather big hotel but somehow it doesn't feelbig. The location, close to a beautiful beach. The room had niceutilities, for example glasses instead of paper cups.
Review 107:Query for breakfast was too long but with a lot empty tables, mabyecleaning and rearranging table can be done much more quickly.
Review 108:Location is good. Receptionist was very nice. Views was good.
Review 109:Reminded me of a Philip Johnson-designed building.
Review 110:Easy access to the beach. View from room (427). Soft sheets. Friendly & accommodating staff, especially Ann Roberts and Cindy.
Review 111:Food too expensive and not great
Review 112:Location,free valet parking, no resort fee
Review 113:Loved the view from room, had a view of the ocean and makena landing.
Review 114:a bit expensive tough
Review 115:room, view, beach, facilities, garden
Review 116:The beach is really close to the hotel, it's really beautiful, I left really fantastic memory in Maui, the hotel helped a lot. Thank u very much!
Review 117:Pool was small, single depth, uninteresting.
Review 118:Staff was outstanding.
Review 119:Ocean front room that does not quite face the ocean directly. Building project directly in view.
Review 120:Away from it all. Much quieter than other chains.
Review 121:Noise and view of construction sight
Review 122:View of ocean
Review 123:Great staff, good bfast buffet. Great value for money.
Review 124:We stayed here on our honeymoon and the view of the smoke detector was nice. Mattress was springy and a lot of fun!
