Reviews for The Dean Hotel
Review 1:Fussy room thermostat, poor shower water pressure, extremely tiny Patron room, loud street, bed could be more comfortable. Blanket inadequate, snacks inside room ludicrously priced.
Review 2:Location, character, great breakfast parlour, free magazines/newspapers, pleasant staff, rainhead shower.
Review 3:This hotel is trying so hard to be chic and cute and "boutiquey", but the poorly hidden cost cutting efforts in the name of "hip", were simply insulting at the price of $179/night for a queen size room. From the moment we walked in and were told that the front door is locked on the weekends after 2am we were wary. Next on the list: no restaurant, no room service, and no phones in the rooms. We could use the cute red phone in the hallway if we needed to communicate with the front desk. There was no one to help with the bags and after we hauled our suitcases up 3 steps to the elevator which held 2 people and 2 carry-on bags, we had to figure out how to keep the elevator door open with one leg, while we propped the inner elevator gate open with the other leg as we tried to maneuver ourselves and are luggage into the elevator without the door crushing us or our bags. When we entered the room that was so small, there was only room for a night stand on one side of the bed, we realized that there was no closet, no chest of draws and no shelves. We actually couldn't unpack without throwing our clothes on the floor or on a chair. The room was supposed to be chic and understated, but was just bare. Even the basics were missing: no safe in the room, the coffee bar in the lobby that was not equipped to charge coffee or pastry to the room, or the laughably small common area with 3 benches and lots of dogs, was just uncomfortable. We weren't looking for a bargain hotel. So, it wasn't the price that offended. It was the value. We were amazed at what passes for cool, chic and comfortable these days. If you are looking for hipster chic, don't have any luggage or just don't care what you spend your money on, then you will like this hotel. Otherwise, there are plenty of other options in Providence.
Review 4:on the plus side, the staff was accommodating and upgraded our room to a suite, when we complained, and the bed linens are very nice.
Review 5:Staff was unhelpful to the point of rudeness. The doorman just stared at me carrying my bag down the stairs (in heels!) and did not offer to help. Price was commensurate with the aesthetics but the service was not at that level.
Review 6:Great design in room and lobby, walkable to downtown and to train station
Review 7:The corridors are noisy due to the hard floor. There was a loud drunken party group on my floor the night I was there. I didn't get to sleep until 2:30 a.m.! Management did make amends with a discount on my rate.
Review 8:The Dean is a charming and creatively designed hotel. The room was comfortable and clean and the bathroom was excellent. The drink and food amenities were also very good.
Review 9:Service in the bar was not great in the afternoon it looked like the guy behind the bar had had too much wine. Had to ask a waitress to get a coke
Review 10:Lovely surroundings
Review 11:The location is convenient to several attractions, the hofbrauhaus with delicious German beers provided the nightcap after a wonderful evening at PPAC, within walking distance. We only stayed one evening but the small room with no dresser and no closet might have worn a little thin after not too many more days.
Review 12:Room lacked coffee, storage for clothes, lock on toilet door, comfortable floor covering. Lift has finger trap gates. Hotel clearly geared to the needs of Spartan young men interested in art and each other.
Review 13:Good location, cheerful staff
Review 14:The open design of the shower isn't the most practical choice (floor gets very wet if you're not careful), and being in an old building the walls weren't the most soundproof, but neither was a big enough issue to be a deterrent!
Review 15:Beautiful, stylish boutique hotel. Friendly staff who are happy to provide recommendations, and cute printed lists of places to check out in the various neighborhoods around Providence. Super convenient location, walking distance to amazing restaurants and bars in downtown Providence. Clean rooms, comfy beds, great minimalist design details in the rooms. Bolt Coffee has the best pourover coffee, and I love the karaoke lounge as well as the Magdalene Room cocktail bar. Awesome value for the quality.
Review 16:Despite the staff's attention to the problem, the presence of the dog was very annoying. It barked all afternoon and, to a much lesser degree, that night. Combined with the fact that our room was right above the entrance to the restaurant on the first floor, it was a very noisy night!
Review 17:The staff was very welcoming and supportive with the problem of a yapping dog in the room next door. The hotel was close to all our destinations.
Review 18:Facilities are lacking... rooms are very small, on the cramped side, shower is smallest I've seen in a hotel. Poor amenities...no gym, no pool, nothing but a bed, a sink, a shower, and a toilet. No closets or anyplace to store or hang your clothes!
Review 19:Friendly staff!
Review 20:No breakfast. Bed was a bit soft for my taste.
Review 21:One block from convention center. Cool furnishings (modern stuff and antiques) in a historic building that was completely renovated. Rain shower and great soaps. Associated restaurant (Faust) and coffee shop are both excellent. Windows open. NOT a cookie cutter chain hotel. Staff really seemed to enjoy their job and even made the less hip patrons feel a little hipper.
Review 22:No room service. Pillows and bed were not that comfortable. Could have used a dresser or a table. There nowhere to lay anything except the bed. He elevator was down and we were on the 4th floor even though we made our reservations 3 months ago and requested a lower floor.
Review 23:It's a very cool boutique hotel; very well designed and decorated. It has 2 bars, a restaurant and a coffee shop. Staff is great, especially Mike at the front desk. Very helpful and attentive.
Review 24:Not crazy about taking the stairs-guys, fix the elevator!!
Review 25:The staff at reception was friendly and efficient. Loved the super friendly manager and bartender at Faust and the location couldn't have been better!
Review 26:Honestly I cannot find a complaint about the Dean. The staff were wonderful, check in was quick and they were always there to greet us and wish us well when we went out and about. The room was so wonderful we almost wanted to spend the whole trip inside!
Review 27:The room suffered from some street noise (room was on the front of the building - a back room would have been quieter). Elevator out of service but staff carried my bag up the stairs so not too bad.
Review 28:Great location downtown, mid-way between College Hill and Federal Hill (could walk to both). Lots of restaurants nearby. Room very clean and rather spartan but in appealing way, and bed was comfortable.
Review 29:Amazingly comfortable bed. Friendly and helpful staff. Shoutout to Ryan for suggesting Ellie's and to the woman at the front desk who printed out directions to the nearest car wash when she learned we were looking for one. Original decor in roons
Review 30:This is a no frills "European" style hotel. Rooms are typically much smaller than most American hotels. The rooms are functional without the usual amenities. Bathroom was fine. If you want to do more than sleep and shower, you should look somewhere else.
Review 31:No drawers or wardrobes - had to live out of suitcases for 3 days. Shower was good it you wanted to wash your hair. But top down makes it impossible to get clean without wetting your head!
Review 32:Lovely staff Location OK
Review 33:Our room was tiny and very difficult to move around. Bed wasn't all that comfortable.
Review 34:Loved the funkiness of the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal at the restaurant attached to the hotel. Fabulous atmosphere and delicious food.
Review 35:Room was very small, no closet or dresser. Bathroom was very cramped. No tub, only a shower stall in which the water pooled in one corner. No telephone in room. Lift/elevator was being renovated, so not in service (we were informed of this before our stay).
Review 36:Within walking distance to some good restaurants. Nice staff
Review 37:The Dean Hotel is in a great location close to a large shopping Mall with a bakery that offers a good breakfast. It is a short walk to the local bus station where buses leave frequently for Newport.
Review 38:The A/C isn't great.
Review 39:The location of the hotel is great. The attached bars and coffee shop are an added bonus. Amazing bed! Loved the bathroom and toiletries.
Review 40:Unfortunately the lift was not working in the hotel due to maintenance. We were only told of this two days before arrival. It was not a major problem but an inconvenience and did not detract from the overall pleasure of our stay.
Review 41:A good hotel and great value for money. Providence is a wonderful city, easy to get around and crammed with interest.
Review 42:The first room assigned was tiny...too tiny to unpack my suitcase in (and I was staying there for 4 days!). There is no furniture for setting out clothing (I requested a small stool), making the first impression of 'hipness' down right annoying. Alternatives to liquid soap (personally, I am not a fan).
Review 43:The staff was attentive and responsive. Once my room issues were addressed, I began to appreciate some of the details (i.e. lovely linens, spare but comfortable furnishings, wish I had time to use the bikes). It was great to have the coffee shop downstairs and the bar next door, supporting smaller business meetings in a variety of environments without leaving the building!
Review 44:There were absolutely no closets, drawers or shelves in the room, just two hooks at the wall to hang up the clothes. No coffee machine, no refrigerator, no alarm clock - very minimalist!
Review 45:Good location in Downtown Providence, nearby Conference Center, Shopping Mall and a lot of very good restaurants. Good variety of cosmetic products in the bathroom.
Review 46:This is an old building and the walls are thin. I was awakened by a couple who decided to have an argument outside my room around 0200 one night. People who travel with children might want to make a game out of teaching their children to whisper or use their "inside voice" early in the morning (I did). I do love that that families and dogs are welcome!
Review 47:I plan to try and stay here every time I come to Providence! I love the minimalist furnishings, and having Bolt Coffee and Faust (restaurant)in the same building is great! The staff are helpful, warm and downright inviting! It's a location if visiting RISD or Brown- just a 10-15 minute walk!
Review 48:Our time at the Dean was a enjoyable experience in every way, however what made our stay second to none was the staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them and my friend and I were always greeted with a smile. Every single member of staff from the receptionist. Right down to the chamber maids who were ready to go that extra mile to Help.
Review 49:There were not many things I didn't like about Dean hotel. I wish the lift was not broken, but still the staff has been helpful with our luggage. Also, they didn't provide us with a pair of sleepers (but they had iron, hair dryer and yoga mat!!). The carpet was slightly dirty but overall I loved my one week staying there!
Review 50:Amazing hotel in the middle of Providence. I absolutely loved my staying in Dean hotel and would definitely go back. The rooms and the building are so special, kind of industrial style, the decoration is minimal, there is wood everywhere. The location is great, only a few metres from the city center and close to everything. The staff is so friendly and helpful, they offered us bikes to go around providence, gave us specific directions to cycle to a small village outside of Providence and offered us umbrellas every single rainy day :) The best thing in the hotel (which absolutely makes up for the non availability of breakfast) is the ''BOLT'' cafe they have downstairs, where they make the best coffee ever with super tasty pastries!! Also, on the top of all these, the hotel has its own private karaoke room :D
Review 51:Room was very small and felt cramped with two people. Valet parking in the lot adjacent to hotel was the only option offered when we arrived.
Review 52:Modern decor and great design concept. Nice details and facilities in the room - i.e. a plug where you need it, a lamp to read by, etc. Lovely cafe in the lobby. Good wifi.
Review 53:No closet, no dresser or drawers so couldn't unpack. No working elevator. Bunk Beds-seriously? A glorified overhyped hostel.
Review 54:It was convenient to where I needed to be.
Review 55:no breakfast included. room was quite small although manageable.
Review 56:very comfortable room with added extras like body lotion etc. very nice bathroom and good shower. very helpful staff.
Review 57:Didn't have a bad experience as such - as didn't pay! Coffee making facilities would be welcome!
Review 58:The location excellent. Near to Amtrak Station, State House and shopping. The Hotel itself a little bit out of the ordinary. Eclectic objets and works of art combine to make this different to usual chain hotels. Staff extremely friendly and helpful as our luggage had gone missing! Also gave us complimentary stay as aircon not working in room.
Review 59:The elevator is out of service. The person at the desk barely apologized and I would have expected some sort of bonus because of that (a discount on the rate, a complimentary gift or something of the sort). Instead, I even paid for my bottle of water in the room.
Review 60:Historical building, near convention center
Review 61:No real breakfast available beside coffee and some pastries in the coffee shop in the hall of the hotel. The price usual for US seems high when you are used to European hotels.
Review 62:Lovely style and perfect location. The coffee shop was making an excellent coffee.
Review 63:I was very happy with my stay. The only thing I didn't like was the sound proofing or there lack of. It was very easy to hear what was going on in other rooms.
Review 64:I loved the aesthetics of the rooms and common areas of the hotel. The spaces were tasteful with awesome art pieces. I really loved BOLT coffee shop. I had a cortado which was the best coffee I've ever had the pleasure of drinking.
Review 65:Elevator was out However I was notified of this ahead of time
Review 66:Visiting brown university with my daughter Cool hip young vibe Clean comfy beds Staff was helpful and enthusiastic
Review 67:Old downtown hotel that has been updated with a quirky flair. Absolute winner...just what we were looking for. Reasonably priced compared to bigger chain hotels.
Review 68:The staff was very accommodating, friendly and helpful. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and were greeted with a bottle of chilled champagne in our room! Everyone from the front desk, valet, bartender and barista were very pleasant.
Review 69:Room was tiny with no room to unpack other than a small open wardrobe with about 10 clothes hangers. The lift was broken and we had not been informed about this - we had to carry our luggage upstairs 23kg each case plus our hand luggage. The guy that helped us told us that our room was one of his favourites with extra space. He had said exactly the same to our daughter. Very disappointing.
Review 70:Location was good
Review 71:Not a lot of in room facilities. No tea or coffee in room although there is a coffee bar downstairs. No ice bucket.
Review 72:Very cool hotel, great location and great staff. bolt coffee in foyer, karaoke bar
Review 73:Nothing
Review 74:Amazing hotel - great value for the price! Friendly and helpful staff. Especially liked Logan at the front desk who was extremely helpful directing us to restaurants and was generally charming and welcoming! Mary at the front desk was also on top of her game! Additionally there was a GREAT coffee bar and cool GERMAN restaurant/bar with 20's Berlin vibe. Highly recommend this hotel.
Review 75:The bed is quite small in the double room (but on the other hand the bunk room that our children shared was a good size). It was noisy in the street late into the night. A big mall but not many independent shops in walking distance
Review 76:The best thing about the hotel was the fabulous reception team that gave us such a good welcome and were so helpful with advice, luggage etc. The hotel has a cool ambience and is spotless. Lovely bathroom and great airconditioning.
Review 77:the stair hallway smelled really bad, then we got into our room and it smelled even worse. It was a bathroom smell...not good. Also, the room was tiny.
Review 78:The style of the hotel was beautiful. I loved the bathroom!
Review 79:Very accommodating staff and all seemed to be happy to help. I liked that the restaurant was open late. Free use of nice bikes was a great way to get around.
Review 80:The elevator was not working. We were only on the 3rd floor, so the walk up wasn't too bad. And the staff volunteered to carry luggage, if needed.
Review 81:The Dean is within walking distance of all downtown destinations. Once you've parked your car, you really don't need it until you're ready to leave. Loved the shower!
Review 82:Elevator was out of service while there and no help was offered for bringing bags up and down. Also valet service was very, very slow and no other obvious places to park as we would have done. Also shower in bathroom is insanely small.
Review 83:I like the hotel's commitment to being green, as well as using the work of local artisans and makers.
Review 84:Fan & AC unit were far away from the bed so room was a little stuffy
Review 85:The decor is extraordinary! Beds are very comfy and bedding and pillows are high quality
Review 86:Only one half of a glass shower door without a shower curtain. Water splattered all over the tile floor. Dangerous! No shelving in bathroom. Nowhere to place opened luggage-only the floor. Additional $25 parking!
Review 87:Bed was extremely comfortable.
Review 88:Only problem was when we left towels to be changed they were just put back on the rail (not even neatly) and one of the days housekeeping didnt make the bed...only little complaints!
Review 89:Really cool decor, friendly staff, very close to convention centre - ideal! Loved it :)
Review 90:The staff was friendly, and helpful. Nice clean room with a comfortable bed. We were on a road trip, and out if the 4 hotels we stayed in. None of them compared to the Dean. Will definatly stay there again.
Review 91:Nothing, it was perfect.
Review 92:Gorgeous decor and rooms. The staff was helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to recommend things for us to do and places to eat.
Review 93:Great staff. Gave recommendations to breakfast places (e.g. Small Point Cafe on Westminster Street, near the Dean Hotel). Coffee was very good. Front staff and, Stephen, the valet, and the coffee bar master were all friendly and helpful.
Review 94:The room was spacious but spare, with hooks on the wall to hang clothing but no dresser, requiring one to live out of the suitcase for the duration.
Review 95:Centrally located in "Arts District", and a pleasant walk to where I needed to go. My room did not include breakfast, but there is a coffee bar (The Bolt) in the lounge area where one can have caffeine and a pastry to start the day.
Review 96:The mattress was a really uncomfortable futon, the shower didn't drain, and the bathroom had no fan....which made it very humid in such a small room. The lift is a nightmare if you have luggage.
Review 97:The WiFi worked.
Review 98:ONLY PROBLEM I HAD WAS NO OUTLETS IN THE ROOM JUST IN THE BATHROOM
Review 99:IT WAS CONVEINANT TO EVERYTHING RESTURANTS DOWNTOWN VERY WALKABLE. THE STAFF WAS VERY FRIENDLY & WILLING TO DO WHATEVER WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE OUR STAY THE BEST
Review 100:We were travelling with some family on our honeymoon, and found a funky place to stay at The Dean! The staff were FANTASTIC and the barista made a perfect espresso!
Review 101:the noise of the place, because of the street and the people walk and scream in the corridor. dust everywhere in the bedroom and towels not so clean
Review 102:the location of the hotel the wood flooring and the bed
Review 103:There was nothing we did not like. Our TV did not work but we did not miss it, that's why we never mentioned it. We just loved the hotel and staff
Review 104:We loved the location, the coffee shop downstairs, walking distance to all amenities, very very friendly staff!!!, we could not have picked a lovelier hotel to stay in. Loved the decor!!!
Review 105:Modern, sleek and stylish. Great amenities: coffee bar, restaurant, lounge and karaoke bar. Bed was comfy and shower products were my favorite of any hotel.
Review 106:Noisy activity at hotel probably folks partying in the bar. Vehicle noise was annoying primary from Harleys.
Review 107:Location was close to Amtrak Station in Providence.
Review 108:hard benches in bar, hard benches in room, lack of space, lack of room service, lack of views, lack of breakfast/restarant., lack of a functional elevator
Review 109:staff and valet guys; beds and bedding
Review 110:The ambiance of the hotel is something one doesn't usually find. It was so charming. Entire staff was great from front desk to valet to barista at the coffee bar.
Review 111:their glasses are really really thin, so just be careful; i don't know why but there were always quite a lot of noisy people around- in building or at the sidewalk. It was noisy, esp at night. There is a big space between the door and the floor, so the noise comes in. The loud talk on the sidewalk comes in easily too.
Review 112:style, branding, bed, shower
Review 113:I think that The Dean would really be a better place to stay on a leisure trip. A few practical limitations make it difficult for business. First, the internet was spotty and did not actually work in our room for most of the 4 days we were there, which is difficult when you actually need to work. The desk in our room was also tiny and not so practical for typing at a computer. And there were other practical oversights - for example our room had a great closet area, but no lighting nearby, so there was a lot of rummaging in the dark. Overall a very nice place to stay if you don't have to get work done or stick to a specific schedule.
Review 114:First of all, the staff were all wonderful and extremely helpful and friendly - great work. The hotel was in a convenient location for a conference at the convention center, and many other locations around Providence. We took advantage of the free bike rentals which is a great amenity.
Review 115:The shower was a little tiny and water kept spilling out on the floor.
Review 116:the staff was very helpful with everything, the decor was amazing, and th location was very good. the restaurant downstairs was really good, as was the coffee place. We got great recommendations for dinner.
Review 117:The Dean is not really a hotel; it lacks the most basic of hotel amenities. If all you require is a bed--and you get a cheap rate-- then maybe...otherwise it is an uncomfortable place to stay. Aside from the Guardian suites ( which are merely bigger rooms, not suites) the rooms have no furniture: a hard folding chair, a tiny desk, and perhaps a wood bench. No closets, no shelves and disfunctional bathrooms; no views. Iron is in a bin under the bed ( just like a dorm!). No mini fridge, no room service either. Nor can you take your beer from the Faust bar to your room. The bar also lacks comfortable seating; just hard-edged wooden benches. Faustian indeed. The staff working the expresso machine are almost comically pedantic. For example, lattes are served lukewarm "because that is the correct temp" and only whole milk is available. The elevator is difficult to open, noisy and minuscule. While there is a hip and rustic charm at the Dean, it is offset by the lack of comfort. Have a drink there and stay somewhere else!
Review 118:Employees try hard. Friendly, eager to please (but not always competent). Bed linen is high quality.
Review 119:Noise from the street was directly in the room, better windows needed. Very small room and bathroom for US standards (room with bunkbed).
Review 120:Stylish place. Coffee from the coffeehouse at the reception area is good (with a limited choice of pastries). Aspire down on Mathewson towards downtown could be a good place for breakfast (since the hotel does not have any). Local121 is a nice bar and very close.
Review 121:Room was tiny. $200.00 per night for a queen bed. One built in desk and folding chair. No closet and the shower was 2.5x2.5. No decor. No view.
Review 122:The bed was very comfortable and the staff were lovely. High marks for that. Good towels and bath products.
Review 123:The walls are paper thin. There are no phones in the rooms.
Review 124:The front desk and valet staff were the best of anywhere I've ever stayed. The design was classy and hip.
Review 125:Not one bad experience.
Review 126:Excellent restoration job with quirky art and furnishings, well chosen food and drink options, nicely done bathrooms (spacious!) and clean clean clean room.
Review 127:Not a single complaint.
Review 128:Great location: within walking distance of everything I wanted to do in town. Every member of the staff was so friendly & made me feel welcome.
Review 129:Very limited services. Rooms tiny, certainly could not have 2 in a room. Could not lay my case down unless i wanted to trip over it in the night.
Review 130:The design focus, the bathrooms are gorgeous.
Review 131:It's small. My mom and I had 4 pieces of luggage and to open the elevator (old with the metal doors, which looks really cool), and fit our luggage was difficult. When we reached the top floor we had to carry out luggage up an additional floor to our room. The shower was tiny, we had to shower with the curtain open. Also it has a rain head which is great for some but I was leaning out of the water to shave and such.
Review 132:The location is great, the design, details and style are really cool. Great hotel for the 20 something hipsters.
Review 133:Unfortunately our rooms were above their club and sound insulation is not as good as it could be. Also, but this is not only a problem of this hotel, the doors to the hallway had almost no insulation at all so you could hear everything that was going on outside.
Review 134:very nice and stylish hotel, excellent location.
Review 135:Loved the room—bunk beds were super comfortable and linens were great. Staff was Very helpful. Coffee in lobby excellent—and order the toast—amazing. But don't expect a place to store your clothes or a standard elevator. The elevator is a tiny one with a gate‚ I found it charming but some might be unnerved by it.
