Reviews for 1896 House Country Motel
Review 1:Very pleasant staff at the desk; very complete and tasty breakfast that was included! Great location, close to places such as ski sites, the Clark Museum etc.
Review 2:The facility is not as billed on the web. The rooms were extremely musty. Bathroom fixtures very old. No AT&T cell service at site. The place is like a 1950s motel stuck in the 1950s. The room was so unpleasant we chose not to stay. False advertising!
Review 3:Nothing.
Review 4:On a Monday morning, the inn had only a handful of guests. The complimentary breakfast was served in a cheerful, cozy, nicely decorated suite apart from the main dining room. It was fantastic!! The serving tables were laden with delicious and beautifully displayed food. There was even lox! The chef then prepared us fresh, made to order omelettes. The breakfast is normally served starting at 8 AM, but we needed to leave earlier than that. The chef came in early just for us. The front desk staff was gracious and welcoming. The TV remote was missing a battery, and less than a minute later, one was delivered to the room. We had questions regarding the difference between the several room styles on the property. We also wondered when was the best time to book for Williams College's graduation and what the pricing would be for that weekend. All our questions were answered, along with helpful suggestions. Very, very pleased with our stay.
Review 5:the front desk staff who's not warm and welcoming, and the bedings need to be updated or upgraded.
Review 6:Property is located in an excellent wild woods but pretty convenient, tranquil and beautiful settings
Review 7:Poor Wifi
Review 8:Location, beautiful grounds with the creek & bridge, rocker chairs on verandas, well appointed restaurant/pub with great menu& good breakfast selection (once I worked out how to work the waffle iron!!),
Review 9:The key/lock was very difficult to use The TV remote did not work Beds were hard and uncomfortable Weeds around the door and motel area
Review 10:Restaurant within walking distance Quiet Extra pillows and blankets in the closet
Review 11:The room needs major updating. Better pillows and mattresses and some ambiance. It needs a "look" that is homey and comfortable, not necessarily luxurious, but special. Pick up a copy of a cottage magazine for ideas on how to incorporate a cozy style.
Review 12:I liked the idea of a little motel instead of a big or fancy hotel.
Review 13:It was a long way outside Williamstown which was not what we expected. Also the 'heated pool' looked quite unpleasant & was right on the side of a busy road. The standard rooms were very dark & dingy
Review 14:Having pub next door & fab restaurant across the road plus the breakfasts were really good
Review 15:Could not control temperature in room. Too cool during the day. Seems the thermostats did not respond to higher temp.
Review 16:The room was large and the beds comfortable.
Review 17:The motel is just that...a motel that's reminiscent of the 50s. The walls were very thin so we heard much of what was going on with unhappy children next door. The beds were not comfortable and the breakfast was a step below fast food. (The restaurant was not serving.) We were relieved we were staying but 1 night.
Review 18:It was lovely having the restaurant (a barn) right next to the property so we didn't have to drive into town after traveling all day. The waitstaff was delightful and the food delicious.
Review 19:The room had a musty odor. It may have been the air conditioner or perhaps the carpet?
Review 20:Breakfast was best I have had on the road in several years. Prepared with care and kept HOT for guests at an appropriate Temp. YUM
Review 21:Motel was comfortable. We sat a bit in by a pleasant brook on their property and later put our feet up around the firepit in their restaurant. Relaxed. Staff accommodated our needs. It was a good overnight stop.
Review 22:The only downside of this motel is one shared by most -- traffic noise. Even though it's set back from the road a bit it's not quiet until well into the night. That's true most everywhere though.
Review 23:Proximity to the restaurant, lovely setting, cozy old-fashioned room, ease of travel to area sites and museums!
Review 24:Lack of care and neglect Poor management furniture and design are old, very dusty furniture is glued in a weird way and very darken. It was a scary time!
Review 25:Gorgeous piece of Property! Such a waste! 1896 displays loudly the culture of mediocrity
Review 26:I loved the whole setting of the 1896 House. The decor of the room reflected the rustic setting right onRt. 7!!! Price was very reasonable especially since it included breakfast.
Review 27:Didn't like is an overstatement but the room could have had better lighting. It also needed a bathroom nightlight.
Review 28:Comfortable, clean and convenient with excellent walkable access to an eating facility with a large menu at reasonable prices. We ate at the 1896 Pub three times. A delightful surprise, room and eating.
Review 29:Affordable lodgings convenient to town. Accept a one-night reservation. Very well maintained property set back from a busy road. Nice rockers on front porch. Very clean room with amenities like a refrigerator, an iron etc..
Review 30:The rooms reeked of cleaning products; the pool was filled with pine needles and bugs, on a busy road and a drive (not walking distance) to area attractions. Left without staying and forfeited my full payment for the room as it did not meet my standards.
Review 31:The receptionist was friendly.
Review 32:An annoying dehumidifier in the room kept going on and off, interrupting sleep over and over. It sounded like someone was breaking down the door every tine the motor kicked over..didn't make for a good night's sleep
Review 33:Comfortable bed...clean room...good water pressure in the shower
Review 34:The lock on our room door malfunctioned and we had to change rooms. The chairs in the second room were not comfortable. Breakfast was nothing special just like a chain motel.
Review 35:Extremely clean. Beautiful brook and woodlands setting. Helpful staff. Conveniently located near attractions.
Review 36:Difficult to find the office as the hotel is made of 2 buildings on both sides of the road.
Review 37:Amazing cooked breakfast ! Great restaurant. The rocking chairs under the porch and the swings.
Review 38:The room had a musty smell. There was a dehumidifier in the room, but even after running it continuously for 24 hours, it still didn't smell good. WiFi was very slow, often unusable.
Review 39:Good location and breakfast and nice pub across the street.
Review 40:Once out of three dinners there, dining room was terribly slow (trouble in the kitchen??) and food so-so. Other times, food very good and prompt.
Review 41:Comfort, all conveniences, well-equipped room, very good breakfast. Couldn't ask for more, especially at the price.
Review 42:the motel is located on two sides of main road, kind of scary with kids. its old, tiny rooms, you hear everything in the room and from its neighboring rooms. the price is way too high for what you get
Review 43:The pub/restaurent was good, this is also where you have breakfast.
Review 44:We checked in early afternoon and discovered we had no heat in the room, apparently from complications resulting from their recently having turned on the AC. Since the weather report predicted a freeze that night, we were concerned. The room clerk (who was very nice and helpful) tried to correct the situation, but couldn't,so she contacted the manager who said he'd come and fix the situation. Several hours later, no manager, no heat. It wasn't until we returned from dinner that the room was starting to heat up. Additionally, we had to run the water a very long time before it got hot. This posed a real problem for the couple in the room next to us, since their drain was clogged!
Review 45:Location was convenient, as was a decent complimentary breakfast.
Review 46:Selfmade pancakes were sour, probably because the waffle machine had been left on for too long.
Review 47:Very friendly staff, very nice open-air restaurant adjacent to hotel,
Review 48:The 6 house pub left something to be desired. Ordered food to go and they left out the side. At breakfast, they had blown a circuit breaker, so no toast or waffles and not a whole lot else to supplement it.
Review 49:The motel is very nice and has magnificent landscaping. Very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Sitting in the Adirondack chairs admiring the babbling brook is a wonderful experience.
Review 50:Breakfast started at 8am which was a bit late for our schedule.
Review 51:Clean, cozy & comfortable. Our family of four stayed one night while touring local colleges. Would definitely stay there again.
Review 52:The room had a slight musty smell, but given the winter we've had (there was still snow on the ground nearby), a couple of days of open windows would eliminate that.
Review 53:The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were outstanding--a standing buffet of everything from cereal, fruit and yogurt to cold cuts, cheese and hard boiled eggs along with a different cooked breakfast every day. Very comfortable beds with a good heating system.
Review 54:I didn't sleep well, the beds were uncomfortable- flat, hard pillows and very firm mattress. The desk staff didn't ask how we enjoyed our stay, was not very courteous.
Review 55:Rooms were very clean, breakfast was included and great, outdoor space was adorable and charming.
Review 56:I loved my stay! The place is gorgeous and peaceful! Breakfast was made to order by Iris, a really friendly lady who works there. Our room was cozy and comfortable. We recommend this place to everybody!
Review 57:There was about 6 inches of snow overnight, but parking area was not cleared. I asked about it at 8 AM, and was told it would be plowed, but by 10:30 AM the snow had not been cleared, making it difficult to drive out to the road. Internet was very slow to connect and too slow for video streaming.
Review 58:Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent.
Review 59:Initial motel room
Review 60:Our first room was across the street from the main buildings. It wasn't particularly clean. Fortunately, the heat did not work so we got an upgrade to a luxury suite which was terrific....lovely large room, gas fireplace, jacuzzi, and a made to order excellent breakfast both days
Review 61:Lovely setting and location (just sit in your rocking chair with your morning tea/coffee). Staff friendly, accommodation comfortable. Don't be put off by the seemingly dark interior in the pictures, it's quaint and comfortable, goes with setting.
Review 62:Solidified coffee left in the coffee pot and used toiletries left in the bathroom. Non smoking room must have been a smoking room up until the day we arrived.
Review 63:The restaurant was cozy and pretty, with friendly service and awesome food!
Review 64:The location was off the main beat (which would be good in some instances) and struck me as an old motel my family may have stayed in when I was a child (I am now 72). The room served its purpose, but I would not choose it again. My fiance booked this and may have been satisfied, but it was lacking to me. Barnside may have suited me better.
Review 65:The restaurant was good.
Review 66:There wasn't anything we didn't like. Next time we hope to try one of the Barnside suites.
Review 67:We found the Brookside room to be very comfortable and relaxing. The room was spotless. The location was perfect for our purposes (visiting Williamstown and the Clark). The staff are very friendly and accommodating.
Review 68:Everything was perfect -- no complaints.
Review 69:Picturesque setting, good food, old gracious living. Even the local ducks were welcoming. Staff was friendly, efficient, courteous and accommodating.
Review 70:had to take breakfast back to room because outdoor seating was all taken--no in-door seating
Review 71:place to sit and relax by stream '6 Pub within walking distance
Review 72:Breakfast was not the best. Cold, not tasty and service was poor
Review 73:Very comfortable.
Review 74:Grumpy junior staff need lessons in hospitality. No senior staff visible. Rooms need better lighting.
Review 75:Excellent food at inn.
Review 76:Atmosphere, location.
Review 77:It was fin and the view was wonderful
Review 78:Room very tired
Review 79:Food
Review 80:Food wasn't very good
Review 81:Sitting outside beautiful view and brook
Review 82:The beds were too short for taller people.
Review 83:We liked the food and service. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 84:One thing, having to wait until 8 am for breakfast, I get up at six.
Review 85:Great place.
Review 86:Could not get WIFI in room.
Review 87:Walk for meals.
Review 88:Plastic flowers outside. Dead potted plants at restaurant. Tired decor.
Review 89:Beautiful setting and a charming and comfortable room. Staff were helpful and friendly.
Review 90:Advertised. As an inn, this is a tired motel
Review 91:Size of the shower.
Review 92:Setting was very nice and dinner then breakfast were excellent.
Review 93:It's position on the main road & close to Williamstown. Good outdoor pool.
Review 94:Hard pillow, difficult lock
Review 95:Pleasant, quiet, comfortable!
Review 96:Not much to do around. It's more a place of relaxation.
Review 97:The nice surroundings.
Review 98:Clean room, breakfast and restaurant had very good food, service wonderful at both!!
Review 99:Fustiness of decoration; trouble with enough hot water for a shower. Breakfast selection not good quality (powdered eggs).
Review 100:Quiet.
Review 101:Williamstown is primarily a college campus, so not much there.
Review 102:A warm and cosy room. Lovely grounds and very friendly staff.
Review 103:It was convenient to have a restaurant on-site,,,plus the food ws good.
Review 104:Shower was a bit small
Review 105:Clean, homey feeling, beautiful setting
Review 106:New owners have made this place THE place to stay in The Berkshires!! Beautiful venue, great restaurant, value plus rooms, friendly atmosphere!!
Review 107:Beds were a bit firm.
Review 108:Gorgeous setting!
Review 109:The hotel, while clean, is very dated. It isn't like the carpets are worn or anything like that, but the rooms look like the 1970s. Air quality was very suspect too in the rooms.
Review 110:The rooms were clean. The beds were comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. The price point was hard to beat.
Review 111:The Wi-Fi wasn't always connecting. Also, the continental breakfast was barely adequate. There is no place for you to sit down and you have to bring back the food to your room. Coffee is from the room and not fresh . Croissant was yummy, coffee cake stale and fruit not fresh.
Review 112:The room was pristine, the grounds clean and read for Spring to Bloom. I also had a great night sleep;mattress just perfect.
Review 113:The door to my room did not open. I had to exit through my friends room. Also my friend did not have a mattress topper in her room, she took one of my room. Between us we did ok.
Review 114:The only thing was that the room was dark due, in part, to the knotty pine paneling. Furnishings were a little tired, but the bathroom was nicely redone.
Review 115:The location was great and the setting was beautiful. It was right along a creek and there were chairs and tables available to sit and enjoy it all. Restaurant next door was convenient and the breakfast buffet provided was not sumptuous, but good.
Review 116:There was nothing we didn't like.
Review 117:The decor, convenience to museums in the area, quiet location and comfort. We particularly liked the fact that it was right next to a lovely restaurant.
Review 118:Dogs....oh we'll, I am always in the minority on this and I am sure it is a plus for many travelers.
Review 119:Location, room, staff, breakfast, refrigerator.
Review 120:Could hear neighbors talking. Dont know if they were in their room or sitting in the rockers outside the rooms but it kept me from falling asleep.
Review 121:Close to williams college which was our destination. Large room. Clean. Could adjust air conditioning with a thermostat in the room.
Review 122:From my immediate throat tightening upon entering my motel room, there seems to be mold. I had trouble with throat itching and scratching, for I'm allergic to mold. The motel is pretty but quite old, as motels tend to be, probably dating from the 1940s. It's quaint and well kept, but there's likely some airborne allergen in those old rooms. I haven't had that reaction anywhere else I've stayed.
Review 123:Nothing
Review 124:I loved having coffee by the babbling brook/ stream. It was quiet and very peaceful! We will be back no doubt!!
Review 125:Very quaint and woodsy. Felt like home. And it was great to have such a wonderful restraurant just across the bridge with in walking distance.
Review 126:I thought the room was very comfortable and the owners and dogs were lovely.
Review 127:WiFi was spotty
Review 128:Great location near Williams College. Exceptional value.
Review 129:Great value for money and great restaurant within walking distance.
