Reviews for Christopher Dodge House
Review 1:There was a mechanical problem in my room. That being said, the friendly staff switched me to a different room with no extra charge.
Review 2:Hot breakfast cooked to order every morning and the "down home country" ambiance despite being in the middle of a major metropolitan urban center.
Review 3:Nice little touches made for such a delightful visit. The staff are very accommodating. We had to leave earlier than breakfast was served, and they decided to make breakfast earlier to help out the families there for an Irish step dance competition where kids need to sign in early. No one asked them to do this, we sort of thought, "Oh well." They came up with that on their own. It was so appreciated by those of us who had to get kids to the Civic Center for an early signup. There are cookies everywhere that are homemade and delicious. The rooms are pretty and the dining are is homey. I would recommend this place to family and couples alike. Very convenient to downtown. We walked with no problem. We also had a beautiful view of the statehouse from our window. The highway is noisy, but you can easily avoid hearing it with an air conditioner on in the summer or using earplugs if your sensitive to sound.
Review 4:We would have enjoyed more time in Providence and your inn. Great place to visit!
Review 5:Perfect room with warm fireplace. Delicious breakfast with friendly staff. Off street parking.
Review 6:Very disappointed in many aspects of my stay. We were visiting Providence for a weekend convention, and reserved a room with a kitchenette for convenience sake. While the kitchen was well appointed (over-appointed, really. Who needs a dishwasher in a kitchenette?), there was no where in the room to sit and eat. The only chair in the room was at a small desk facing the wall. At best, we could take turns sitting and eating, or drag the table to the side of a very tall bed. Parking was problematic. While there was room in the overflow lot a block away (glad it wasn't raining) there was ample parking on the street in front of the inn. We were told to not park there, however, as the neighbors would have us towed. There were no signs indicating any parking restrictions, and it was only by merit that I was driving an over-sized vehicle (a van) that I even thought to mention that I was parking on the street. Lastly, we did not enjoy a single breakfast at this bed and breakfast. Service begins at a surprisingly late 8am, which meant we had no time for breakfast on Saturday. This was discussed when we checked in. However, upon settling into our room and reading the guests folder, we discovered that a bagged breakfast was available, but by the time we discovered this, the front desk was closed for the night. When we tried to have breakfast on Sunday morning we walked into the dining room at 8:10 am and were told we would have to wait 'a while' for breakfast. When I asked if the hostess could define 'a while' (10 minutes? a hour?) I was answered with a curt 'no.' I elected to load our luggage and pack our vehicle while my wife quickly drank a cup of tea and had a cold hard boiled egg for breakfast. Upon returning to check out, I was told how I could request the bagged breakfast next time if I was in such a hurry. There will not be a next time I am sorry to say.
Review 7:Beautiful period house, nicely updated. Comfortable bed.
Review 8:It was within an easy walk to Amtrack. The food was delicious and Allyn was amazingly helpful from before I even made the reservation until even after we checked out.
Review 9:Plug in bath didn't work - staff tried to sort but buy couldn't
Review 10:Very large nice room with 'real' fire and armchairs. Excellent breakfast, very friendly staff. Cake and cookies on arrival
Review 11:The property is located next to a five lane highway so incredibly noisy! The breakfast was not as good as other b&b's in the US
Review 12:I loved the size of the room and the comfort of the bed
Review 13:Close to highway and could hear the cars traveling
Review 14:Loved room #1 it was charming. The staff was always baking and the smell of cookies and cakes filled the air.
Review 15:The Christopher Dodge House is located across i-95 from the Rhode Island State Capitol building. It may not be the best location, but it is close to downtown Providence. And once you arrive you are received into a charming, tranquil world. I enjoyed a large, bright and airy room (5).
Review 16:Because of proximity to Rt 95 it took some getting used to local roads to come and go easily. But GPS workef great.
Review 17:Room was very comfortable. House was very clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Cookies were very tasty (not good for my diet).Easy walk to downtown.
Review 18:There was nothing negative except you could hear the highway a bit. But they actually put one of those sound machines in the room. How classy! Breakfast was good not great but the staff was accommodative in that they substituted and made us a special breakfast. So maybe this should be in the like part.
Review 19:I especially liked the ambiance, the staff and the location which was in the heart of Providence. We were by the canal, the financial district and Brown and RISD and we got to explore which is exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted a New England B&B, not a hotel, and it was nice, not luxurious, but very B&B and well kept.
Review 20:Had reservation for room d6 which is on opposite side of house that doesn't face hwy . But when got there they gave us d12 which faces hwy so. Was a little noisy but with ac on it was no big deal and really don't know if other side of house would have been any different
Review 21:Rooms are unique not like chain hotels Free parking is also a bonus in providence . Breakfast was very good
Review 22:Not a lot of parking space.
Review 23:The location is perfect, in a quiet neighborhood yet 3 minutes drive from the train station and 5 to 10 minutes distance from the city sites. The room had a homey, cozy feel. They had a good array of breakfast offerings.
Review 24:The bed was placed close to the stair well and I could hear people going up and down the stairs
Review 25:The staff was really nice and they had everything prepared for us hotel key parking pass etc.. even though we checked in late.
Review 26:The room itself was great, but we were on the fourth floor, which was a bit cumbersome. It might be helpful if the room descriptions indicated which floor they were on. As there is no elevator, and really no one to help with luggage, a third or fourth floor room could be a real problem for some. We would stay there again, but would likely ask for a first or second floor room.
Review 27:Christopher Dodge house is perfectly located if you want to walk around Providence. Park the car, walk 3-4 blocks and you're downtown, or at many of the historical 'must see' locations. The hot breakfasts were varied, and there are other options if one wishes to eat a bit lighter.
Review 28:There is some traffic noise from the highway. If you can sleep through it, or are an early riser, it will be no problem. The a/c mostly covered up the noise for us. Or ask for a room away from the highway side.
Review 29:Perfect bed and breakfast experience! Beautiful, historic home. We had a very comfortable, large room. The common spaces were so welcoming, and we had delightful afternoon tea and cake. Breakfast was superb. A very relaxing experience.
Review 30:My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at the B&B. The staff were very helpful and the Christopher Dodge House is lovely. Great location, too! My only suggestion is that they add a key drop box near the front door so that you can leave your key if you are checking out early - I felt uncomfortable dropping it off with the kitchen staff....
Review 31:slightly away from the center of the city, though probably not at all a problem if one is driving.
Review 32:cozy atmosphere. home baked cakes/cookies for snacking. The place was very relaxing.
Review 33:First and foremost, we never met the Innkeepers. On our arrival, we did meet a gentlemen who let it slip that he was the owner, but that was the last time we saw or spoke with him. Never met his wife. In B&B that we have stayed in other places, the Innkeepers were very friendly and informative and would help in our plans. They would give us information where to eat, where to visit and we felt at home. Except for the friendly staff, it was like a hotel room. I felt unsafe in the neighborhood, especially walking back at night. I needed a stool to get up on the bed, which sagged on one side. You had to climb many steps for our room on the first floor.
Review 34:The staff was very friendly. The room was spacious. The breakfast was excellent. There were refreshments always available, cookies when you came back after a long day.
Review 35:The room in which I stayed was a perfectly placid and serene, Victorian masterpiece and my bed was extremely comfortable. The staff saw perfectly to my wishes to avoid feather pillows and down comforters due to my allergies.
Review 36:Located alongside a busy road so road noise can be heard, however the air con drowns out this noise significantly.
Review 37:Beautiful building, friendly helpful staff and excellent location within walking distance to downtown providence. Breakfast was excellent, bedrooms very comfortable and spacious. Nice to have complimentary drinks and snacks available throughout the day.
Review 38:A/C was noisy, the shower was nice however the only spot to sit your shampoo/soap etc was on the bottom of the tub as there was no shelf at standing height. Provided shampoo and soap but no conditioner or lotion which I would have expected from a spot that was $190+ american ($230+ CAD). Didn't seem like the safest area...
Review 39:The rooms were very nicely decorated, felt like you were in a cute little cabin in the 1950's. Bed was so high you needed a step to get up on which felt very luxurious. Off street parking for a few cars was available. Free cookies all the time and a little snack/common room that has muffins and scones and other free treats, plus a mini fridge where you could buy soda/water and chocolate bars for $1. Breakfast was yummy.
Review 40:The traffic noise was non-stop. Can't be helped due to location.
Review 41:The ambiance of the building and the rooms. Tasteful decore. Quietness of the goings on in the building.
Review 42:Pillows were flat and old. The rooms seem more plain than before. No curtains and generic bedspreads seemed less than what the decor used to be.
Review 43:Love Providence. Love the breakfast.
Review 44:small bathroom . Water pressure not very strong for toilet and shower. only one mirror --- in the bathroom.
Review 45:i liked being able to walk to the mall and restaurants. My daughter and I attended a conference at the RI convention center. We were able to walk there and leave our cars parked at the inn . Very convenient! Room was very cozy.
Review 46:The traffic noise. A bit of a walk to restaurants. A lot of steps
Review 47:Rooms were great. Staff helpful. Tasteful decor. Breakfast inventive but not to my liking
Review 48:The location was great. A short walk to the downtown area with plenty of restaurants and entertainment. The breakfast choices during our stay were phenomenal! The first morning we had pancakes with a blueberry drizzle. The second was an omelet with mushrooms, bacon and cheese. each time the main dish was accompanied by fresh fruit. With a 10 foot ceiling, private bathroom, fireplace, air conditioner and floor to ceiling windows, our room was simply outstanding.
Review 49:I could smell every morning the breakfast cooking while I was in bed. The small was strong and annoying. That was the only dislike I had but it was not a big deal anyway.
Review 50:Nice and friendly staff. Fast wireless connection and free parking place. Very good location not far away from the mall.
Review 51:No restaurants nearby - though not far from Downtown Providence Mall.
Review 52:It's a B&B - breakfast was a standout - ginger pancakes with real maple syrup - and a full variety of juices, coffees and morning comforts. Gas fireplace in the room, with this winter was a treat. Bed was very high and comfy. Easy parking, delightful staff.
Review 53:This was a great place to stay while visiting Brown University. Everything was perfect! We loved the kind staff the clean and comfortable room that was tastefully decorated colonial style. The hot breakfast was delicious...a veggie eggscramble. Yogurt, pastries and toast too and of course the usual coffee tea and juice. There was water infused with orange and mint that was in the sitting room and was very refreshing g after a long drive! I highly recommend this place!
Review 54:The manager was fantastic. She was friendly and very accommodating. Our only regret is that we checked out and forgot to tip the breakfast server, we could not get back in as the doors were all locked.
Review 55:B&B is so convenient, few minutes walk to the Providence Place Mall and the Vets Memorial Theater. Although the property is right next to the highway we did not hear any traffic noise at all. There is free onsite parking and a delicious hot breakfast is included. The room was immaculate, very comfy bed and linens. Smart bathroom. Very pleasant staff. Highly recommended
Review 56:I love the charm of beautiful & old homes- this b&b was built in the 1800's & had many beautiful architectural features I loved! Staff & food were wonderful. I plan on going back again in the future!
Review 57:No grocery/supermarket very close to the B&B
Review 58:The location was a 10 minute walk from the Providence Place mall. And within 20 minutes walk of the College area, with RSID and Brown, and the Thayer Street eateries. The room was very clean, comfortable and cosily warm in January. Breakfast spread was good. Coffee and cookies on tap was a very nice touch.
Review 59:Half of the rooms are with I-95 view, it's super laud as windows are pretty old. I am not huge AC fan and I'd love to open the window but we really wanted to minimize the noise. That's the petty as overall place is super cosy. I would not stay at this side of building again.
Review 60:Overall hosts hospitality, nice breakfasts, possibility to use the gym nearby.Chimney!!!
Review 61:neighbourhood to the left is way less salubrious, stay out of it
Review 62:lovely quiet room, cooked breakfast, very convenient short walk to main street, parking
Review 63:Super friendly, happy to answer all questions via email, phone or in person. Extremely accomodating - I missed breakfast both days but was able to request a to go bag with whatever i wanted! My room was charming and clean. Will stay here again.
Review 64:I especially didn't like the noise of highway traffic. I live in a city and am used to noise. The difference with highway traffic is that it is constant. The location is a bit out of the way and not optimal for someone without a car. The closest restaurants are at Providence Place, a mall I wouldn't think of eating at as a visitor.
Review 65:The staff were very nice and the hot breakfast option (scrambled eggs with Kielbasa) was nicely presented and delicious. My room was well-appointed and comfortable.
Review 66:Not a thing
Review 67:The lady who runs this hotel is so accommodating , it was spotless , she had made some beautiful cakes on our arrival , and the breakfast she served in the morning was exceptional .
Review 68:The area was a little rundown and not near anything else like a restaurant or shop. We did just walk four blocks to get to the local shopping mall which was fine. I do feel that the Providence hotels in general are fairly expensive and that is why we chose to stay across the river from universities.
Review 69:The staff was very accommodating from our late check in, wonderful breakfast and requests for restaurant suggestions the next day. The room itself was very clean with lovely linens and a nice clean bathroom. The B and B had all the supplies that we needed as well as wonderful home-baked cookies in the entry way. Parking is included in your price along with breakfast which made this hotel the best deal around.
Review 70:Can't think of anything I didn't like except maybe a choice of hot breakfast items would be nice. Only one thing being served a veggie crepe, not to my taste, would have liked a plain omelette instead, but to be fair I didn't ask if they could make me one, I just accepted what was on offer.
Review 71:When we first arrived we were met with a warm welcome and were taken on a little tour of the place, our room was on the ground floor, it was clean, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was small but that never bothers me, it was clean. The staff were very helpful suggesting somewhere close by to eat and drink. This is an old interesting building, makes a nice change from the usual hotels that I stay in.
Review 72:Lugging my suitcase up to the third floor, but I wouldn't trade that for the charm of the old house.
Review 73:Charming room, friendly staff and delicious home-made breakfast.
Review 74:It's very close to the interstate and so if you are on a certain side of the building you can hear the traffic noise
Review 75:The room was well decorated and large. The common room with free coffee 24/7 and the breakfast was great.
Review 76:Nothing. Can't wait to go back!
Review 77:Unbelievable room, gracious owners and staff, a snack room for all guests, with coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc., and a really excellent breakfast. Also, very easy to walk downtown.
Review 78:The breakfasts were OK. Nothing special.
Review 79:The location was convenient. The room was spacious, with high ceilings, and a comfortable feeling. Excellent bed - slept like a log. Extremely accommodating staff.
Review 80:Breakfast was poor. Dried bagels and breads, did not try the scones. Empty serving plates. Maybe understaffed? Coffee in pitchers, not fresh. On our day, the hot entree was a crepe with veggies, which apparently were over steamed, not fresh. The reason we like B&B's is for the awesome breakfast. Not this time. That being said, the experience with our innkeeper was so positive that we would come back, just hope for a better breakfast.
Review 81:Our unit was clean, all was quiet even though the B&B was full. Beautifully reconstructed rooms, lovely ambiance. WONDERFUL staff. It was lovely to wake up to a sun filled lower level room. We would love to come back to the most gracious hostess we have encountered in our B&B experiences, She is a GEM!!
Review 82:Air conditioning was a bit loud, but keeping windows open was also a bit noisy. Ear plugs would have been helpful.
Review 83:Lovely room. Delightful and helpful staff. Good breakfast with variety of items. Well presented. Perfect place to venture out from.
Review 84:Zero
Review 85:Superb room. Clean, comfortable, quiet. Great bed and bathroom. Fabulous breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Fine location for walking around Providence.
Review 86:Disparity in our rate for stay--unless others were misinformed about theirs.
Review 87:The welcoming by Kate was friendly, prompt & helpful. As location for conv ctr, a bit of a step hike on foot. Breakfast good & accomm's quite comfy. Unless other guests not accurate, our rate somewhat higher tho we all there for same mtg but we highly recommend & wld return to C Dodge House on future trips.
Review 88:Beautiful old house in great condition; gas fireplaces in the rooms; excellent breakfast and great service; good off-street parking.
Review 89:That there was no management around at the time I got there.

Review 108:A wonderful facility that has preserved the charm of the house and is matched by very good service.
Review 109:Lovely room, delicious breakfast, great 24 hour lounge with homemade treats & fruit. Excellent place to stay. Would recommend.
Review 110:Noisy (overpass and highway near our room), not much presence in the office
Review 111:Breakfast, common room, the chef, the cuteness of the place
Review 112:The staff were 2nd to none. So helpful and kind. The location suited our purposes and we had everything we needed.
