Reviews for University Place Hotel and Conference Center
Review 1:My son found a pair of dirty underwear under his bed when checking to make sure we didn't forget any of our belongings.. Slow draining tub
Review 2:Location Room set up Breakfast was nice Staff were pretty friendly
Review 3:Inflexibility of staff when checking in. I was penalized for making reservations online and not on the phone and paying for parking. There is plenty of space in their lot and no security or valet service. Ripoff! If they hadn't already taken my money, I would not have stayed there. I will not stay there again and will freely share with other veterans and others what they are up against. I sent a complaint via the website and haven't heard back, of course!
Review 4:Breakfast was decent.
Review 5:Outdated TV, bathroom and carpet, leaking toilet that had to be manually shutoff after waiting for the refill
Review 6:Location and price, full breakfast at a large room, workout room, downtown parking $15/day instead of $30/day nearby hotels
Review 7:there was some discoloration on the ceiling. it was just enough to slightly irritate me.
Review 8:Was Close to Downtown was able to walk to all the places I wanted or needed to go. For me it was a very affordable price. Staff was great.
Review 9:my initial room had a couple of problems.after talking with attendant at desk I was quickly upgraded.I was pleased with this and the room.
Review 10:not too far from downtown,on campus and across from light rail and bus.
Review 11:Property is showing it's age. Not that anything's broken or the like, but some small things could do with a bit of a refresh. One example: the front desk cautions you about potentially de-magnetizing your key cards, likely since the locks are probably overdue for an upgrade (sometimes took 3 or 4 swipes to open). Not a big deal, but there are a few little quirks like that.
Review 12:Definitely not the fanciest place around, but a high value for the price. The other economical options in/near downtown Portland are pretty sketchy, whereas University Place hits the "nice enough" mark, while still being significantly cheaper than the average hotel in the area. Also, the new Orange MAX line has a stop literally right out front, so transit is really convenient from here.
Review 13:Our room was on the ground floor and it was VERY cold by the sliding glass door that led to the outside...not sure if this is the case on all floors.
Review 14:Excellent location, solid (free!) breakfast, comfy bed, clean overall, GREAT value!
Review 15:Sliding door did not shut properly so room was cold at night unless we ran heater.
Review 16:Room had all usual nice hotel amenities plus a balcony. Very good restaurant to have dinner and free breakfast was superb. Also, Freshly baked cookies provided at check in!
Review 17:First I was assigned a dingy little room which was ice cold. It turned out that heater did not work, so I was assigned a much better room. I wouldn't have felt comfortable in the first room - not cozy at all.
Review 18:It is an old hotel, but my room was comfortable, nice and clean. It was quite cozy and had everything I needed.
Review 19:The hotel is very comfortable. However, if I had to give an honest response I would say that the decor in the rooms could use some refreshing, i.e. lighter color palette for the bedding, draperies. This is due to the constant gloomy weather in the winter.
Review 20:The hotel was in one of the most convenient of locations for a first time traveler to Portland. Whether taking the tram or walking, the location was better than staying downtown.
Review 21:The room was a bit cold, but it's December. The heater was noisy.
Review 22:Room size, bed was comfortable, Great value for money. Staff very helpful and understanding. central location close to the OHSU hospital
Review 23:Room could be cold, and heater very noisy and right in the corner of a large room. Maybe better in summer?
Review 24:Good location, liked the breakfast and rooms very large.
Review 25:Hard bed. Pool closed for winter. Free continental breakfast was of very basic quality - much better breakfast options elsewhere out and about.
Review 26:Fresh cookie at check in. Location near tram stop.
Review 27:The room was not that clean when we moved into it (dirty carpets, coffee grounds in sink and tub, blob of food on the tv screen) and cleaning staff did not come in to refresh the room after our first night there other than to hand us clean towels at the door.
Review 28:The location was so perfect for us and the hotel adequate for our needs.
Review 29:The temperature through out the buildings as well as our room was horrible. Freezing in the reception and our room only had two temperatures; freezing or sweltering hot. Also there was a leak or water on the floor of the bathroom. Towels were also located IN the shower which could have been a disaster if i had not noticed ahead of time. The rooms were also very outdated, musky, and not comfortable.
Review 30:The price and location was ultimately drew us in. It was reasonably priced in downtown portland and seemed nice from the pictures we saw.
Review 31:We didn't like your restaurant, The Grill. We expected a place we could have a good meal. Most hotel restaurants are great with extensive menus & a pleasant atmosphere. It was a huge disappointment.
Review 32:Room was nice & bed was comfortable.
Review 33:tired-looking building, our room was an "upgrade" so I would hate to see the condition of the "economy" rooms, our shower had nasty chalking, the paint on the walls and doorways is battered, fixtures are all outdated
Review 34:nice staff, great price, excellent location, solid building, comfy beds and pillows, everything was clean, there was hot water with good water pressure, free hot breakfast, big-a** chocolate chip cookies when you check in!
Review 35:The hotel is pretty dated but for the price in Portland, it was expected.
Review 36:Perfect spot for visiting PSU with our high school aged kids. We were able to walk everywhere, even into downtown. Front desk staff was outstanding - funny, super informative and helpful.
Review 37:The hotel was clean and neat, but was showing its age. The room was clean, the linens clean, but the pillows were musty and definitely retained the smell of having cradled multitudes of heads. Isn't there some economical method of disinfecting pillows, then using zippered pillow protectors?
Review 38:I liked the location: in addition to it being very close to the Portland State campus (the facility is owned by the University), it is also within close proximity to the OHSU medical facilities, which was my main objective. The breakfast was refreshingly lacking in sugary, fatty doughnuts and pastries! Lots of choices otherwise, which was excellent!
Review 39:Booking.com said this would be located within walking distance of a place we wanted to be in Portland. It was not within walking distance, so we needed to drive. Yuk. Not a problem with the hotel, but a problem with Booking.com.
Review 40:Front desk problems. No offer of a welcome check-in warm cookie (as offered to others). I had to pay for a newspaper that was marketed as an amenity. We had TV remote control problems. The front desk said that it would be addressed immediately. But it was never resolved during the stay (not a big deal because we were there to see the sights). There was a disconnect at the front desk.
Review 41:The hotel is convenient to mass transit (just outside the front door). Easy parking at the location for a small extra fee.
Review 42:I had no heat in my room - no one ever came to fix it. Dining room was very slow - I think the waitress went out the back door. The total bill was NOT what I was expecting.
Review 43:Nothing
Review 44:The bed, although new was cheap and as hard as a rock. Every time my husband moved the whole bed would move with him. The furniture and carpet are old and in dire need of being replaced. The front office staff need to be trained in hospitality a bit more. They do not engender a welcoming feeling.
Review 45:The staff is quick to respond to requests. And the location is great. The rooms are clean and the happy hour is well priced.
Review 46:Room was either cold due to draught through door or too hot (noisy heater). You could here neighbours through walls. Wifi was a joke and it kept prompting login every 5 minutes. Parking should be free for guests.
Review 47:Short walk into town.
Review 48:Getting on the Internet was hard and frustrating and sometimes impossible.
Review 49:Quiet and comfortable. Courteous staff, great breakfast, easy walking distance to museum.
Review 50:The worst that can be said is that front office staff could have been more friendly. That said all other staff went out of the way to please. Sunday is difficult for dining in Portland unless you eat Chinese
Review 51:Good comfortable room and pool ideally placed for exploring Portland without paying a fortune. We stayed three nights and explored the city, downtown, and parks symphony by foot, tram and trolley. We walk, and were near enough to walk to symphony hall to see Oregon Symphony Orchestra playing Pink Floyd.
Review 52:The bed was a little hard side and could use some updating.
Review 53:The Hotel was located across the street from the MAX. It was a good value and friendly, helpful staff.
Review 54:They charged us $15 a piece for parking and never told us we would be charged for it. For the price we paid for one room and two parking spots, it wasn't at all worth it.
Review 55:The location was good. The room was just okay.
Review 56:No WiFi in room. Room not updated or kept up very well. Not very clean. Had to pay for parking.
Review 57:Location for access to downtown and for getting to Portland Marathon
Review 58:The location was perfect. Not very far from the Portland Marathon start/finish and many choices of places to eat close by as well as a reasturant/lounge at the hotel with very good food. Max was right there if you didn't want to walk and close to freeway access. I would definitely stay again.
Review 59:A maze to find your room. Outdated and not updated, dirty architecture - it felt like I was in a dorm from the 1970s. Room was beat up, bedding old, ill fitting (we had to use towels to cover up the top of the mattress because the sheets wouldn't stay on. Tub old, chipped and dirty feeling. Ice machines hard to find and not working, signs said "out of season."??? Card key mechanics were not working for us, for the housekeeper and our neighbors. Just overall very outdated and scuzzy feeling - but for the price I guess you get what you pay for. They do charge an extra $15 to park in their hotel lot that seemed high.
Review 60:Outdoor pool looked nice, didn't have time to use it. Staff was friendly and helpful - was nice to be given a warm cookie. A/C worked very well.
Review 61:My girlfriend got bitten by bedbugs in our first room (148) and plumbing didn't work. We told front desk and were relocated to another room after being asked "So what do you want me to do?". Feels very very used and outdated.
Review 62:Location to downtown, laundry facilities.
Review 63:No wifi in rooms! Ethernet cables only. I have not used one in years! Smelly. Broken sheets with pubic hair. Air leaks through the windows and the heater was either all on or off. If you turned it on you baked yourself. Had to spend the night turning it on and off. Awful. The rooms have not been updated in 50 years. Depressing.
Review 64:I could get a room.
Review 65:Key cards didn;t work for first room. Had to move. Had problems with key cards for 3 days before they could get it sorted out. A bit of a pain as I would go to the room, card wouldn't work, go to the desk, reset card and go back. They need to update their key system. I don't have portable devices and was a bit put out that a business hotel did not have a computer terminal that guests could use. Have been all over the world and this is the first hotel w/o a terminal. What are they thinking?
Review 66:Quiet. Great access to Tri-Met. Used it several times a day. Liked having an auto rental in the hotel.
Review 67:No other place we have stayed on our vacation has charged for parking. I feel we should not be charged for parking when we pay for lodging. In addition, why is the procedure to obtain wifi so difficult? We never were able to get it to work.
Review 68:We liked the contemporary, clean accommodations, the swimming pool and the wonderful free breakfast.
Review 69:Couldn't connect more than one device to the Internet. That seemed inconvenient.
Review 70:God for its price. I forgot somethings in my room and the staff found it and said they would mail it to me. They were very helpful.
Review 71:Smoking on balcony by other guests. Location far from city center, but then we did not make use of public transit options.
Review 72:Breakfast was good. Registration desk staff very helpful
Review 73:We did not have ethernet cable port on our laptop and were placed in a room with no wifi. Had to use a phone as a Hot Spot.
Review 74:Excellent location, clean and breakfast was great.
Review 75:The hotel didn't have wifi in every room which was a bit of an inconvenience. Old building for the most part. But if you can get a great price and just need somewhere to sleep then it should be perfect!
Review 76:Good place to stay for a young couple travelling and wanting to be able to walk to downtown Portland!
Review 77:Room was very tired. Had yellow stains on ceiling. Carpet icky didn't walk around barefoot. Need new mattresses. Need a visit from hotel impossible!
Review 78:Breakfast ok and location.
Review 79:Old, smelly room with full bed, not queen as we had booked. Wi-fi didn't work and buildings were not labeled according to the hotel map. Charging for parking where the lot is clearly for the hotel is absolutely ridiculous.
Review 80:Location was awesome, free warm cookie with check in. Check-in employee was friendly.
Review 81:Overpriced. Did not have the facilities to handle the number of people that were signed up [c. 400], conference room was very overcrowded. Not enough parking. Expensive parking fees
Review 82:Location was good and convenient for the conference. Beds were comfortable.
Review 83:House keeping was pitiful, did not clean room for 2 of the 4 days we were in town.
Review 84:Location was good for what we were in town for, close to university.
Review 85:We found our rooms very dark, and as it rained constantly on the full day we were in Portland, it was quite depressing. We had an attempted break in on our car, and other guests were noisy during the night.
Review 86:The rooms are a good size and well equipped, also the hot breakfast was good with plenty of choice for everyone.
Review 87:Upon check in my debt card didn't work, so I ended up paying cash for our stay, which was one of the reason I picked this hotel since it was advertised that my card wouldn't be charged unless I used it. One of the hotel staff, who was very snotty told me I couldn't use cash, but the other nice staff member told me I could, which I paid for incidentals with the debt card, and the rest with cash. I was almost ready to leave and I had a concert to attend in less than one hour. I was very frustrated with the snotty staff member but was happy they accepted CASH as payment!!! Crazy!!
Review 88:Our room was at the end of a hall which I liked due to us coming back to the hotel late and I didn't want to disturb anyone. The hot shower was super!!
Review 89:The wifi did not reach all of the rooms, some of the lighting fixtures did not work, and the towels were not changed when requested. The beds were noticeably changed with haste.
Review 90:The complimentary breakfast offered many options for people with dietary restrictions. Very approachable food staff. We were given complimentary cookies upon check-in.
Review 91:The front desk staff was indifferent. The rooms are terribly outdated. The wallpaper was peeling, the shower had hair in it, the shower drain was pugged full of hair, the light and the fan in the shower were both broken, the coffee maker was filthy, the cups were dirty. Everything in the room was old and dirty. I will never recommend this hotel to anyone and I will never stay here again.
Review 92:The location was optimal.
Review 93:Over-priced for the quality of the room. Room was very out-dated, furniture was quite banged up, and the ceiling was water-stained. Not impressed at all.
Review 94:Location
Review 95:We had booked 2 types pf rooms, the deluxe and standard rooms which were priced differently. When we got our rooms, they were all identical. So some of us paid more for the same rooms.
Review 96:The breakfast was good, location and friendly staff. There were food carts right around the corner too!
Review 97:Not much to complain about unless you like to complain to feel important!
Review 98:The hotel is great. Landscaping and the pool are wonderful. The free Breakfast is better than you can order at a restaurant!..Parking is easy; the rooms are modern and up-to-date. Best of all our poodle could stay with us. You will love it here!!
Review 99:a) Dry Cleaning service, had been cancelled when we arrived. Front desk not supportiveb) Water was coming up the sink (rain from the roof). Personnel informed did not react did not even called back. We had to put all our staff on chairs desk etc. Overnight water was close to run into our room! c) Another leakage occured on the corridor. d) ice machines out of order
Review 100:General conditions were clean, but worn out. Dog-eared. Needing a freshen-up pretty badly. Again, not dirty, just weary. TV reception was crummy. Paucity of plugs.
Review 101:Location was OK, but will be great with new Orange Line station opening right in front of motel.
Review 102:Needs total room renovation. Shabby at best. Mattress was seriously uncomfortable and pillow casings crinkled like plastic and sounded like it if you moved your head. Carpet should have been replaced long ago. Everything was worn out. Would never stay there again.
Review 103:Free wifi was only in deluxe rooms. We could only get wifi in the communal areas. Felt like it needed a refurb price we paid.
Review 104:Good location, good choice for breakfast. Warm cookies on arrival! Decent hot shower.
Review 105:It's hard to believe this hotel with it's many professional guest can not get wifi in all rooms. I have stayed at smaller motels that we're able to have wifi in all rooms.
Review 106:The balcony
Review 107:Consider adding small refrigerator in rooms
Review 108:Within 15 minute walk or short public transit ride of downtown Portland Clean, basic room Decent breakfast included Good value for location
Review 109:The staff wasn't very friendly and for how much I spent on the room it wasn't that big and the bed was very firm so it wasn't that comfortable .
Review 110:I liked that there was not a lot of homeless people around that location.
Review 111:The TV in our room needed repair. The volume of the TV kept cutting in and out everytime it got loud. Very annoying.
Review 112:The space of the room was great and felt at home.
Review 113:EVERY THING WAS LOUSEY. THE CARPET JUST LIKE ANIMALS PEED ON IT. THE ROOM WAS SMELLING SO BAD I HAD TO COVER MY NOSE. I AM SHOCKED WHY THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS NOT CLOSED THIS DIRTY HOTEL.
Review 114:None. It was a big mistake to stay in UNIVERSITY PALACE. IT IS NOT A PALACE, IT IS A DIRTY VERY DIRTY ZOO. NEVER AGAIN I'LL STAY THERE EVEN IF YOU GIVE IT TO ME FOR FREE.
Review 115:In the process of renovating the front but we were told and it did not impact on us
Review 116:Friendly helpful staff Clean and comfortable. Easy walking to city centre and river walk
Review 117:No Wifi in the rooms !!!! Unbelievable to imagine in US and in 2015 ! Facilities need refurbishment, cleanliness can be improved in the lifts, stairs and corridors... Breakfast room very dark and basic food. Big hotel in which you have to walk a long way in the corridors.
Review 118:Convenient location and swimming pool.
Review 119:The facility (which is owned by Portland State University) is run down, definitely in need of sprucing. To our surprise, our room was in a part of the hotel without WiFi. There was no luggage cart or full-length mirror. A light in the bathroom was out; wasn't fixed until the night before we left. The shower head sprayed the entire bathroom and was eventually replaced. The toilet clogged. The hot water went out one of the days we were there. All in all, a less-than-sterling experience.
Review 120:The staff was very responsive whenever we had a problem with our room.
Review 121:The location is excellent, no vehicle required as everything is within walking distance and public transit is right outside. It's a bit old and run down, but kept pretty clean. The breakfast is sufficient and no frills, a little variety might be nice and can still be kept simple. It was the same everyday! We had no hot water one morning, but it was fixed by the time we returned in the evening. Overall, it's a pretty good bargain and could be improved upon with a little upgrading to the rooms and premises.
Review 122:They need to improve their sheets; the bedding would come apart every night!!
Review 123:Within walking distance of downtown, the University of Portland, and the waterfront. Walking is easier than driving in that part of Portland because of the many one-way streets!! We also enjoyed the un-crowded pool and they have one of the best buffet breakfasts of any similar facility. Great coffee!!
Review 124:The wing we were in did not have wifi. So wifi could only be had in common areas of hotel. This is not as advertised and is very disappointing. Also got a "ticket" for $0 from the university for not properly facing my parking pass outwards. Really? In any case gave us a good laugh.
Review 125:Staff was awesome. very close to street car to get to all the good spots, even walkable to the good spots if you are up for the 25 minute walk
Review 126:Needs to be updated and remodeled lobby smelled like an overripe cantaloupe- Carpet mildewed - mold in bathrooms- screens do not close properly - halls dark dingy depressing - smells- water stains on wall and ceiling- staff only thing that saves this place
Review 127:Front fest worked hard to find me a quiet room - food was wonderful - bar food and bartender great
Review 128:Front office staff was OK, but not very friendly or helpful. As I guest, I helped a group of other female guests load bags onto a cart and move it, because the front office staff didn't offer, even as they watched them struggle.
Review 129:Great location; great breakfast; decent room.
Review 130:The exterior pathways dirty. The rear elevator interior filthy. The breakfast poor. The reception staff surly and unfriendly. No guest services. The whole appearance dilapidated. The room lacking modern day serivces. The A/C loud and noisy. The bed cover dirty. The pillows lumpy and smelly
Review 131:The minute we left
Review 132:No WiFi in rooms only lobby and bar. TV reception lousy, $15 per day for parking, guest laundry filthy.
Review 133:Location was OK. Rate was high for the age and amenities of this property.
Review 134:Found half eaten food left in fridge from previous guest. Breakfast is poor & served on paper plates with plastic knives & forks which made eating actually difficult. My balcony door did not shut so could hear noise every night. Whole place was grubby & in need of a make over.
Review 135:I liked the location to downtown
Review 136:Hotel looked like it hadn't been renovated in 40 years. Double, not queen or king beds. Dreadful upkeep of common areas.
Review 137:Good location close to downtown. Nice staff.
Review 138:Ice vending machines were out of order. We have got one king bed and one small extra bed instead two queens beds.
Review 139:Nice to stay for one night. Relatively clean. Rich breakfast.
Review 140:the juices and cereal were very sweet. when i saw all the food leftovers, paper dishes and plastic cutlery all disposed off in the same garbage bin i wondered if the restaurant does recycle anything....
Review 141:the location. It was close to walk to places in town and very close to the light rail train stop. the room was simple but pleasant and the complex was well kept. The swimming pool area is a nice outdoor addition. I liked the mixed ages of the people who stayed there.
Review 142:Staff at front desk were rather grumpy and not always available. The bed wasn't great. The rooms were a bit old and need updating. I got charged the wrong rate on my credit card once I returned home and had to dispute it.
Review 143:Location is excellent
Review 144:Room was freezing with a blasting air conditioning when we arrived. Bed was terribly hard and uncomfortable, probably 20 years old. Hotel needs an upgrade - seem very old with unattractive interior decor, especially the hall carpets and wall color.
Review 145:Price was good. Used the athletic club and found it to be good. Didn't use the pool but sat outside by it and enjoyed the garden setting.
