Reviews for Sauerdough Lodging

Review 1:We enjoyed the 4 days we stayed. We booked the room for 5 days, but left early because the weather was unpredictable and we wanted to get a head to start to the airport.

Review 2:I really liked the bedding and the layout of the apartment. The bed was soft and the sheets very soothing. The kitchen utensils were on point. We prepared food and everytime we reached for something it was available. The bathroom was very modern looking. The cleaning staff was very friendly. The lock on the door stopped working and we were locked out of our room, but the lodge owner was very attentive and worked diligently on New Year's Day to resolve the issue remotely and kept in constant contact with us until the issue was resolved.

Review 3:Just a note so it's not a surprise. The bathrooom contains a claw-foot tub, which although we found we found charming to look at, wasn't ideal for showering. Not a real issue but something to be aware of.

Review 4:Loved the quiet location at the back of the property and the modern decor and furnishings integrated with the old-world charm of the building's architecture. Very convenient having coupons to use at the cafe downstairs. The building manager and the staff at the cafe were very friendly and helpful.

Review 5:Nothing I can think of

Review 6:Matt is very friendly and welcoming. The apartment was spotless and the bed was comfy. The Sourdough Lodging is also in a great location.

Review 7:It is quite a trek up steep stairs for us and our luggage. The furniture in the room( extra futon bed) and chairs were not comfortable for sitting in- ended up just sitting on the bed- no ice machine- had to get ice from the coffee shop downstairs.

Review 8:The location was perfect- close to bus line and Sea Life Center. The room has a great little kitchen and large bathroom- the bed was comfortable, the room clean and cozy. Savings coupons for the coffee shop downstairs for coffee and meals in the room

Review 9:That we had to carry our luggage upstairs alone very steep someone outside offered help, but I didnt know him so afraid to use him u shd have someone available

Review 10:Very cute, pristine apt liked the brkfast coupons too!

Review 11:I was surprised that the second bed in our room for four adults was a futon.....and the cushions separated during the night.

Review 12:The coupons to use in the coffee shop downstairs ended up being terrific! The four of us had nice breakfasts for two mornings -- delicious. The full (small) kitchen was a real bonus!

Review 13:No screens on windows make for difficulty to prop windows open for fresh air. It was raining so water got in to room.

Review 14:Cute and quaint. Comfy bed is of utmost importance and I appreciate that. The discount at the coffee shop below is awesome!

Review 15:View of roof

Review 16:Loved the refurbished old building. Bed very comfortable and kitchen great even though we didn't use it. Claw foot tub and roomy bath.

Review 17:Friendly, helpful staff from the Sea Bean coffee shop next door. Right on main street, so in the centre of town. Very comfortable bed, clean & lovely bathroom with a bath.

Review 18:You can hear other guests and road noise but not that bad!

Review 19:Loved the boutique feel for the same price of a large hotel. Wonderful location and friendly staff. Great spot!

Review 20:This cute, small, well furnished apartment met the needs of my grown family of six for a night before boarding a cruise ship. If it is just one married couple, or a family with young children you could comfortably stay here for a week. Privacy might be an issue if you are traveling with married couples. We all agreed we would consider this property again should our travels ever take us to Seward, AK again.

Review 21:The studio we stayed in ( Apt 5) really should be available for 2 people only since it is quite small with the fold out futon quite uncomfortable to sleep on. The main bed was also quite firm but better than the futon. The kitchen is not updated like some of the other units and our room was too hot ( we could not change the temperature since the place has radiators) so we had to leave our windows open. The view is also mainly of the the backs of next door shops and homes with glimpse of the bay.

Review 22:we loved being right near good restaurants an date wild life sanctuary AND away from the waterfront meant for all the large cruise ships. We did like the vouchers for the cafe below the apartments but the service at the cafe was sadly quite unfriendly so we kept using the vouchers to bring our bagels and coffee up to our room.

Review 23:It's an old building, the king size bed was also very old and madenoises when you turn. The pull out couch wasn't comfortableeither. The shower is hard to use. It is not attached to the wall andis kind of shaky.

Review 24:We stayed at the one bedroom suite for one night after our cruise. Thehotel is easy to walk to from the cruise dock, about 20 min walk. Thereis a very nice coffee shop on the first floor with a good selection ofsandwiches, sweets and gluten free items. It is only open until 6 P.M.but there are a some other restaurants around. We didn't see anystaff members. They emailed the door code to us and we just opened thedoor and got in. The one bedroom suite is big, we had 4 people in ourparty. The bathroom with the shower is very clean and looks nice. Itwas quiet at night. Overall it is a very convenient place to stay atSeward if you have a family of 3-4. Much cheaper than two rooms in aregular hotel.

Review 25:First I did not receive any access code to front door and room, so went cafe at 1F asking help. Walked up on stairs to 2F, the smell was horrible. Room without any safety lock, anyone has room access code can open door, felt unsecured for entire night. We were out for dinner but someone locked front door from inside, hence you couldn't get in even you had access code. Tried to reach out B&B owner but all went to voicemail. That's terrible experience to stay this place.

Review 26:Not so crazy about the comforter on the bed...I felt like Minnie Mouse, but no big deal.

Review 27:The location on the main drag was great. Appreciated the coupons for the cafe. Instructions were easy to understand and everything worked. We like to stay in funky places and this was perfect.

Review 28:We had two small children, the room was very small, the floors were very squeaky. The bathtub was very old and had someone else hair it it. It is self check in and out, no staff. The wi fi was extremely SLOW.

Review 29:Great downtown location.

Review 30:TV reception was too bad to watch. Hallway smelled musty. Steep stairs to second floor, & carpet on stairs needed cleaning. Could hear through walls. Needed directions on how to lock door on electronic keypad when going out. Claw foot bathtub very cute but a little hard to climb in & out for showers. We had apt. nbr 4. View was of a parking lot & large trucks in back of building.

Review 31:Very large apartment with full separate kitchen. Room very clean. Could park right outside of door to building. Lots of restaurants, shops, bars on same block. Received two $5 coupons for coffee shop downstairs. Received codes for outside door & apartment door before arrival so could just go straight to room without checking in with anyone. Could open window for fresh air.

Review 32:We liked the inviting warmth on arriving here; but once inside apt 4, we found the apt to need updating. The tub and kitchen sink are old and possibly original but need resurfacing. The clawfoot tub shower curtain allowed water to leak out the front of the tub. Our mattress was on a platform bed with thin slats, that fell to the ground in the middle of the night. We spent the last night trying to put the bed back together, and it was late after midnight. Another review from Aug. 19, 2013, (tripadvisor) mentioned this exact same problem, so obviously it wasn't repaired (try some 1x4's?) a year later! We didn't see what good us calling this late at night would do, with us just putting it back together ourselves. Our teen daughter was in the same room with us on a couch-bed and it woke her up when the bed fell apart. We saw the owner only once the first night because we had to call to let us in, as someone had bolted the deadbolt where we were to enter using a code keypad. We had cigarette smoke smelling up the place, as the seasonal employees stand outside below apt 4 window in the parking lot behind, and smoke. Also had someone sitting on the front door step smoking almost every time we tried to enter. Definitely overpriced for the lack of quality in the room we got, even if it was Alaska's high season for tourism. For the price we paid, the furniture we slept on would be of higher quality I would think or at least be repaired using a more reliable method than the original slats that came with the bed, if this has happened before.

Review 33:We liked the old downtown charm and quaintness of the building. We liked being close to shopping, cafes, restaurants. The floors creaked which was part of the old charm of the building, but some may not like it. The stairs that led up to the rooms from the street entrance were steep, but again part of the old charm of the building- they didn't have elevators in such buildings back in the day. If you want a home-like experience where nothing is perfect like a 4-5 star hotel, then this place is for you. The staff at the cafe next door were very nice.

Review 34:Double pin code, one for the entrance and one for the room. Memoryloss or poor eyesight natural or intoxicated can leave you on thestreet. Nil refreshments provided (tea, coffee). Shower over the batha bit too basic

Review 35:In the main centre. Meet expectations based on previous reviews and theOwner's write up. Spacious rooms.

Review 36:Had to call the owner to get the wi-fi password. There was a short period when there was no hot water.

Review 37:The bedding was very comfortable and the sheets smelled especially clean and fresh. Location was good - many attractions, bars, and restaurants were within walking distance.

Review 38:One of our two rooms was too hot. We managed to get one room cooled down, but the other was too uncomfortably hot

Review 39:The rooms were homey. Two of the girls wanted to live there. Quiet. Kitchen availability

Review 40:Great place to stay. Large, clean apartments right in the heart of town. Quirky, fun place to stay with a great history! Owners are very nice and readily available. The Sea Bean downstairs has good food and you will get some coupons at check in :)

Review 41:The futon fell apart from sitting on it:(

Review 42:The room was so modern and comfortable!

Review 43:Pull out couch mattress very poor

Review 44:Lovely clean apartment with friendly staff

Review 45:Light, spacious

Review 46:Wifi was basically useless in Studio 4. Everything else was pretty much as advertised.

Review 47:The stairs were very steep and having a bad knee made it hard to climb up and down.

Review 48:I loved the old bldg.

Review 49:Great location in the downtown area, Sea Bean cafe underneath was lovely.

Review 50:the quality of the bed was less than wonderful, and this was an issue for my back

Review 51:location, price and cleanliness are all excellent

Review 52:Wifi and poor ceiling fan.

Review 53:Very cool place to stay. Would highly recommend.

Review 54:Comfortable rooms felt like home

Review 55:Entry stairs are difficult with suitcase

Review 56:The location was central. room was comfortable and clean. staff were friendly and helpful. good value for money.

Review 57:I didn't like not having the proper access code upon arrival.

Review 58:I liked the location, the cleanliness of the unit, and the convenience of a loft style unit versus staying in a hotel. Having a small kitchen with amenities was perfect.

Review 59:Our favorite stay on this trip ... homey, roomy, cozy and comfortable. Unlike a motel room where you feel cooped up and just want to go outside, this place made us want to hang out inside with a cup of hot chocolate watching snow fall outside (which it didn't ... we had nice weather :-)

Review 60:no clock, couldn't adjust heat, no staff contact, temperamental door lock on street level, check-out time too early, dirty bathroom (check behind the door)

Review 61:quaintness, location, size of guest quarters

Review 62:Bed in the studio was a bit uncomfortable by my preferences, bu husband said he thought it was fine. Would like in room coffee

Review 63:Very quaint, cozy place for it quick visit to Seward. We would stay there again.

Review 64:Our unit was said to sleep 5 adults however I'm not sure where they were planning for the 5th adult to sleep. It was my husband, his grandfather, and myself in the unit and that was plenty cramped. The grandfather slept on the sofa bed in the living room, but had to barge through the bedroom if he needed to use the restroom in the evening. That was a little obnoxious, but aside from that everything was great.

Review 65:The bed was incredibly comfortable! And the apartment had great character. The furnishings were comfortable and high quality as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Review 66:Not enough sleeping space, extremely cramped spaces for 5 adults, substandard bathroom conditions, not at all what it is made out asadvertised.

Review 67:Location

Review 68:The bed had some construction issues (although it was new and clean). Also, the claw foot bathtub (which is wonderful) had some issues - the shower curtains didn't go all the way around, so water got all over the floor, and the water temperature suddenly would get ice cold or scalding hot without warning. But otherwise, the place is great!

Review 69:Sauerdough Lodging's studio was bright, airy, and very charming. It's in a very old building, and much of the original character remains. It was very comfortable to stay in, and the location is perfect - right in the original Seward downtown. The small kitchen, clean bathroom, and comfy sleeping arrangements (complete with flat screen TV) made it the perfect place to stay in Seward.

Review 70:The wifi never really worked for any of us in the room. Also, the showernozzle would not turn the hot water off. It was right before we left soI texted the number provided but did not receive a response so I hopethey took care of it... Also, in the email they sent about ourreservation, it would have been nice to have directions to the hotel.

Review 71:Loved the location! Right in the heart of downtown Seward. The room wasreally adorable, and although we only stayed there one night, thekitchen would have been really fun to take advantage of. The uniquenature of the lodging was fun as well. Although we never dealt with anyperson during our stay, 'check in' went very smoothly.

Review 72:The building should condemned. Our first impression was to wonder how much the owners were paying the city commission to delay ordering its destruction. The lack of any window covering whatsoever in the bathroom was just the icing on the cake. When we tried to call the owners on 3 occasions, we got an answering machine. Since Seward is so small, you get the feeling that you're trapped in what you booked. So we stayed.

Review 73:Location was great, but nowhere near good enough to overcome the negatives, which were many.

Review 74:Sauerdough lodge was so nice. Unbelievably clean. Close to shops, restaurants and Kenai Fjiord tour boats. Free parking . Very safe, convenient, clean, affordable, what a find!!!

Review 75:The 19 stairs to our room:-) The walls have no pictures , made room a little depressing. The living room furniture is new but so uncomfortable . Couldn't enjoy sitting there at all. Television is new but too small to see in the room unless right in front of it. Suggest putting one in the bedroom. There wasn't any bath soap .. I brought everything but that:-( Definitely need more lamps. The ceilings are high and leaving the chandelier burning is too stark. Tall lamps would work in many areas. Ceiling fans would work better than the chandelier. They could be dropped down from the ceiling and make a more cozy atmosphere... Especially in the bedroom.

Review 76:The location was great. Three windows overlooking the quaint shops up and down the street. Convenient to gourmet bakeries and coffees. Walked out the front door to great food either direction we chose. Streets were quiet at night and well lighted.

Review 77:This is not a hotel. It has no front desk, no housekeeping, and the room is very basic with no keys and no soap or shampoo provided. Once you book the hotel, they give you a code for front door and room. There is no service at all. They claim to provide breakfast but it is only a 5 dollar breakfast voucher per person per day which can only get you one cup of cappucino and nothing else. A budget lodging that is overpriced. Definitely not 3 stars.

Review 78:Short walk from sea life center.

Review 79:While in an older building, the owners have worked very hard and done a fantastic job at renovating these rooms with modern appliances, furniture, linens--everything! Impeccably clean (and I used to work in the hotel industry.) The decorator's eye for color also adds to the charm and comfort. It is in a great location (downtown Seward) and is walking distance to the Sea Life Center, the playground, food, shopping. There is also a great coffee shop on the bottom floor and you are given vouchers as part of your overnight stay. For the price and charm, it is the best choice in town!

Review 80:No one on-site, and minor maintenance items were evident. Wi-Fi is weak.

Review 81:Space and comfort was great. Full kitchen.

Review 82:Loved the decor and atmosphere

Review 83:Perfect, convenient, location

Review 84:Good amenities and service.

Review 85:No coffee maker No hair dryer No extra blanket available

Review 86:Very responsive to request for extra bed

Review 87:No elevator

Review 88:Clean and roomy accomodations

Review 89:Location, space and quick response by owner on request

Review 90:No screen on window. Winter comforter not appropriate in July.

Review 91:Very clean and well stocked. Extremely helpful staff. Excellent location.

Review 92:Expensive as all Alaska

Review 93:Great location, with good amenitues and very clean.

Review 94:The room door is so old that it is very difficult to clock, and the staff does not care about guiding customers how to use digital lock properly
