Reviews for Taroka Inn

Review 1:Building in an extreme state of disrepair. Some areas are quite dangerous. Wood on porch rotted away. Interior was not very clean. It was difficult to reach toilet due to walkway between bed and TV very narrow. We would not return to this establishment

Review 2:Host was friendly and helpful

Review 3:Booking.com you should take this property off your website. The kitchen had a very bad smell and the dishes were so dirty they were sticky to touch. I had to wash everything before I used them. The blinds were covered in dust which showered down in me when I opened or closed them. The property is very old and in bad state of repair to the point of being a health hazard. The grounds are overgrown with weeds and high grass. The price we paid is outrageous for the quality of accommodation here. Do not stay here.

Review 4:Nothing

Review 5:The building is old and pretty shabby, although the owners have made some improvements since our previous stay in 2012. The room is fairly clean, but not spotless. The bathroom is only accessible through the bedroom.

Review 6:Taroka Inn is a good bargain for a fairly spacious accommodation in Seward. There is one separate bedroom and an additional bed in the common area. Full kitchen (real refrigerator, stove, and sink but very limited dishes and tools) is good for self-catering.

Review 7:As rotten, dirty, neglected, moldy, smelly, and disgusting as a place can be before it falls apart.

Review 8:This place must be closed immediately. It's a threat to your health and ruins your vacation.

Review 9:Nope, all good.

Review 10:Loved the location, loved the convenience of having a kitchen, loved that everyone our group had a place to sleep, and loved the manager, James. He was awesome!

Review 11:Just don't get your hopes too high. This is an older place - more like apartments than a motel. If you are to good to go with the flow you will be fine. If you are looking for a Holiday Inn, look somewhere else.

Review 12:Great location

Review 13:Needs better WIFI. It didn't work most of the time.

Review 14:It was quait, quiet and homey. The unit had everything we needed to be comfortable and cook for ourselves. Lots of room, separate extra bedroom, fridge, full kitchen with pots and pans and dishes, towels. GREAT.

Review 15:the place was run down cupboards doors falling off mold growing in the shower so much carpet fresh on the rugs your eyes burned didnt dare use stove or dishes

Review 16:owner very friendly and accommodating

Review 17:The facility is a little bit old.

Review 18:The owner is such a nice and enthusiastic person! We enjoy his hospitality. The hotel is right at downtown and close to the sealife museum. Wifi is very fast and stable.

Review 19:I have camped many times in the outdoors. I was ready for that but I was not ready for this place. You cannot called it a motel or a hotel but the worst place I have ever stayed in any country. Everything including the owner or attendant were all ruined down. Cannot believe that there are no authorities supervising a minimum of quality for an establishment of this type to run. There are no words describe the outside and inside but disastrous. If you are backpacking, you would prefer to sleep in your sleep-bag on the street than here.

Review 20:The room was attached to office, very loud when people checked in, had to walk through bedroom to get to bath. I asked for a sheet and pillow for futon, was given a pillow and was told a sheet would be an extra charge.

Review 21:The location was perfect. A few blocks from downtown: bars, eateries, galleries and the Seward shuttle.

Review 22:I was traveling with my 8 year old son. We had scheduled 3 days for a train trip followed by a chartered fishing and then a visit to the sea life center for his 8th birthday as a mom and son thing. The place is just up the street from the sea life center, a variety of shops to eat and buy nicknacks and an awesome children's park/skate park. Our fishing trip was very long, wet, windy, cold and managed a rock fish over the entire 6 hours we were out there so getting home to a clean warm and comfortable space to relax and thaw out was wonderful. The host was very friendly and pleasant and was kind enough to give us a quick ride up to the train on our way out of town. It was a very nice experience for both myself and the birthday boy.

Review 23:Location was great, priced right! Kichenette was nice-small stove, full size fridge with upper freezer. Bou g t groceries in anchorage-plenty of room to keep freezer items and fresh cridge items until we headed to next location. Outside not fancy-or inside either, but clean and perfect for our family. Would stay there again.

Review 24:We were happy to have kitchen, with dishes, cookware, etc. However cookware was old and in poor condition with Teflon surface peeling off. Dishes mismatched. Building old with sloping floor.

Review 25:Nice tvs, good internet. Beds clean and comfortable. Quiet. Loc atefor close to services and attractions.

Review 26:Poorly maintained facilities, very worn down furniture, dirty carpets, needs at least a coat of paint. A very neglected property, both inside and out. I am disappointed that it got a "good" rating by previous guests. I discovered the reason why the hotel is neglected - it is for sale. My only alternative hotel was a $300 a night Holiday Inn Express, so I took a chance with the Taroka. Live and learn.

Review 27:The owner was pleasant. The location may be good for some travelers, not so much for other travelers - depends upon what each of us seeks in Seward.

Review 28:The kitchen and bathroom didn't seem very clean. The facilities were old. The walls were thin.

Review 29:The beds were comfortable, the location convenient, and parking was provided.

Review 30:It wasn't the cleanest place, the kitchen was in need of an update and the carpet smelled a little on the musty side. The bathroom had just been redone and was very nice. Overall, we were not in Alaska to stay at a resort and for the money it was a very nice place to come back to at the end of each day.

Review 31:What an amazing location! And what an awesome value. The owner is so nice, friendly and helpful. We loved our time in Seward and the Taroka Inn was a great place to stay.

Review 32:Ambiance can be improved. Structure looks a bit old. Can be modernized or remodeled a bit.

Review 33:The house was spacious. All the appliances were present. The location was excellent (close to Seward train depot and Sealife center).

Review 34:I would be nitpicking if I complained about anything for thisaccomodation at 50% of surrounding properties rates.

Review 35:Very friendly owner, affordable for Seward, spacious apartment-likeroom, older property but clean, best wifi I found in Alaska, safeneighborhood, literally a one minute walk to Seward attractions.

Review 36:The owner was very friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom appeared to have been newly renovated. There was plenty of space in the suite for our group. We had everything we needed to cook meals. It was perfect for us.

Review 37:On the first morning, I had to call the inn host (James) to request that he turned on (or turned up) the hot water heater so we could take showers. The daily rate was relatively expensive as compared to a national chain hotel nearby which even offered free breakfast.

Review 38:The inn host (James) was very friendly and helpful with suggestions for restaurants and shopping. The inn is conveniently located on the main freeway coming into Seward, so it was very easy to find. It is also a couple of blocks away from the waterfront. Large flat screen LCD TV.

Review 39:The outside appearance of the property was not very appealing. It was a little awkward having to go through the one bedroom to get to the bathroom.

Review 40:The owner/caretaker was there to greet us with a smile. The size of the room was awesome! I had read about the history of the Taroka Inn before leaving home; thus, I understood the layout and also felt like I was a part of that history. I would definitely stay there again. Great value for the money compared to other places in town,

Review 41:It was older and the grass could have been mowed and trimmed.

Review 42:The location was great and the price was right for what you got. It was like staying in a older cabin. Perfect if you are not a princess.

Review 43:Really broken down hotel which need lot of work. All the items in the kitchen looked like he purchased from a Good Will Store.

Review 44:Host was helpful and the location was good. He provided coffee and filter every morning

Review 45:The place is pretty old and weathered, but it is obviously well cared for.

Review 46:Nice comfortable room right in the middle of Seward, and it was the cheapest in town :) the kitchen was fully equipped with pots and pans and silverware, the bathroom was clean with plenty of towels, and the beds were clean and comfy. No complaints here.

Review 47:The place was in poor condition and was not very clean. Additionally the beds had mites that bit during the night making it incredibly uncomfortable

Review 48:The people were friendly

Review 49:We didn't like the owner and very disappointed in the Inn. It was the worst we had over a period of 38 days. We had no complaints about any other accommodation

Review 50:Looked kinda sleazy from the outside, but once we got in all was well.

Review 51:We liked that it had a kitchen and Safeway was a couple of miles up the street. Beds were clean and comfortable, the bath room small but quite functional. We enjoyed our time there.

Review 52:Very old and not in good repair. Looked clean but smelled musty. Mattresses were old. Kitchen was very small, old, and needs updating.

Review 53:Two seperate rooms for beds and one pull out couch. Wifi and TV were good. Linens and towels were clean.

Review 54:The place was generally dated and worn and the front entrance could use a general clean and tidy but there was a lot of information there to help with your plans in the area.

Review 55:The beds were comfortable and the place was clean with everything needed to make your own meals and the owner was very helpful and friendly. The location was excellent near downtown but still very quiet. A free bus was nearby to take you to the docks and Safeway. Close to a beautiful walking trail and the ocean.

Review 56:I will start by saying that I've stayed in countless "budget" lodgings across the U.S. and generally do not care about ameneties or superficial things like the decor or the age of the building or whether there's a small stain on the carpet. That said, the Taroka Inn makes the lowest-end one-star chain motel look like the Four Seasons. The building was dilapidated inside and out. The doors and windows would not properly open/close, rooms were dingy and dirty, windows cracked, and one of the rooms had a distinct cat urine odor. You expect everything to be overpriced in Alaska, but this place was more than double what you would pay for a standard budget motel in most locations and much lower quality. If you're looking for a basic, clean, no-frills option in Seward, the Breeze Inn just up the road is well worth the little extra cost.

Review 57:Convenient location near "downtown" Seward

Review 58:Very tight space in the bedroom but living area was spacious. Looks a bit rundown from outside but room (and the bathroom) was very clean.

Review 59:Spacious room and living area for 4 friends. Extremely convenient location to main downtown area, short drive to boat tours.

Review 60:looks pretty shabby from the outside

Review 61:Free Wifi Clean living quarters 2 bedrooms with a kitchen very affordable for all the amenities included based on the area

Review 62:the place could use some tlc, nothing some paint and new carpet couldn't fix. the owner did mention he was thinking of selling, so makes sense why it is a little shabby.....

Review 63:it was a great price and easy to find, the owner was very nice. beds were comfortable and we felt safe there, two ol' ladies, traveling together.....

Review 64:The 2-nights stay in Taroka Inn was greatly exceed my expectation. The room was very spatial, there're 2 queen beds and a couch. The WIFI was very good. We also grilled our salmons in the yard with the help of warm-hearted house owner.

Review 65:It had a smell and opening the windows they were filthy. Carpet needed some cleaning. Stove top and cupboards were dirty. We paid the same price for a much better room.

Review 66:It was like a cabin. The bathroom had a brand new shower that was nice. Roomy enough for family.

Review 67:Good value for the money. The suites are roomy and clean but the motel is old. The remodeled bathroom in room 1 was nice. Also had a view of the mountains.

Review 68:This is a very old and run down establishment, outdated furniture and appliances, not even close to what we would expect from a motel room. It was rather creepy.

Review 69:Clean sheets, comfortable bed, and good wifi.

Review 70:The room smelled bad and was not really clean. The hotel is very old and hasn't been renovated for decades. It is like a $40 motel room except that you pay $160 for it.

Review 71:Rooms need updating. Dead bugs in window sills. Not having basic salt and pepper in kitchen.

Review 72:Loved having a kitchen where we were able to save money by preparing our own meals. Owner very nice and friendly. Location close to shopping.

Review 73:This is an older structure and suites & rooms are oddly configured - not a real negative but some might find them odd. The one adjustment was one bathroom for a suite that sleeps 6-8, but it's manageable.

Review 74:We opted to economize on housing so we could spend more on food/fun and still had an excellent location - walking distance to most of downtown. Mr. Lo was an excellent host and was very accommodating. The rooms were clean and quite comfortable.

Review 75:only one bathroom access in the back bedroom area its ok with a bunch of guys we made it work. place is outdated but clean.

Review 76:great place for 4 guys to stay after 2 days of fishing we all had our space in separate rooms for those who snore.. it was great to have a bed by myself. Jame's the owner is a funny guy.. By the way his place is for-sale if anybody out their wants to buy it.

Review 77:We liked the location. It is within walking distance of downtown Seward. It is easily accessible for parking too. The friendly owner and the option of having a kitchen for breakfast or lunch options.

Review 78:Mr. James was awesome!! Looks shabby on the outside but was quite stunned by the cleanliness of the rooms. Beds were comfy!! Will be going there again.

Review 79:Facility could have been a bit cleaner but overall not a bad experience.

Review 80:The "frontier" experience of the Taroka Inn was unique. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Short walk to downtown in the historic town of Seward. A memory maker.

Review 81:the outside looks a little rundown. but we didnt come to alaska to stay in five star hotels!!! experience the flavor of the area, awesome!!!

Review 82:james is a jewel! you could not ask for a nicer host or a cleaner place to stay. wonderful location, dont be put off by the outside, the rooms inside are spotless.

Review 83:How the place was dirty and smelled like smoke. We stayed in the rooms attached to the lobby and when we pulled up the owner was in there smoking, and you can tell he's been smoking in his room. My kid and I have asthma, so this wasn't okay for us. Our rooms were also just dirty- as in they needed a nice, deep cleaning. The curtains were visibly moldy, the kitchen had lots of grime. It was gross, so we didn't even bother using the kitchen at all. Since the facility was so dirty, I cringed at even using the bedding that was provided because I bet they don't even wash the blankets after each person stays. Overall, I will never stay there again and would rather pay 50 bucks more to stay somewhere cleaner.

Review 84:I liked the location. Its nice walking distance to what I needed. Parking on the street for the motel was good too. I paid 150 for a family room and was impressed with the size. There was a couch that pulled out into a bed and a bed right there in the living room, then a bedroom with another bed as well. Having a nice mini kitchen was good too. The bathroom was recently re-modeled, so it was pretty clean.

Review 85:What did I like? Nothing it's a dump. Wouldn't recommend. Needsto be taken off your site. Very over priced!

Review 86:Nothing the place is a dump. Needs to be torn down. Over priced. Thecost at $25.00 might be effective.

Review 87:It needed to be aired out and cleaned, the floor in bathroom felt like one wrong step and you would of been through the floor.

Review 88:Not much but we could walk around and see the area.

Review 89:Although everything was in working condition with reasonable comfort, the unit was very run down...still best cost/value option that was available

Review 90:Property owner and location were excellent.

Review 91:- Very friendly and jovial host/ manager - Excellent location - able to accommodate large group! (We would've had to reserve 3 separate rooms else where) - Historical bldg

Review 92:The kitchen facilities were dirty. However, the bedding was clean and the bathroom was clean.

Review 93:James, the manager, was most pleasant and helpful. I recommend to those who need a budget accommodation in an expensive area.

Review 94:It was spacious. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with a full kitchen for the price of an inexpensive hotel room. It was old--but had character as the buildings were the officer's quarters during WWII. We were in Seward to explore the abandoned barracks and bunkers of the nearby Caines Head US Army facility so it was perfect for us! Taroka Inn is near the very interesting Seward Museum/Library and the Sea Life Center. Exit Glacier Guides is also nearby. Taroka Inn was easy walking distance to just about everything we needed. Free town shuttle stop nearby also. The manager was kind enough to store our luggage on the day we arrived--we arrived too early for check-in--and he stored our luggage on the day we checked out--our cruise ship left late. This allowed us to explore without luggage! Taroka Inn provides clean, basic, comfortable accommodation at a very good price. We would go there again, and we would likely stay longer as there are plenty of things to do in the Seward area.

Review 95:Too hot in the room. Bathroom had no lock on the door and it was in an odd location in the room. Needs updating and remodeling. Office area was very unkempt. Lawn should be mowed and outdoor flowers should be cared for.

Review 96:A room large enough to accommodate all of us.

Review 97:Loved the location. Quaint cottage style setting. Clean rooms with full amenities (clean bathroom, functional kitchen which could use some upgrading). Wifi worked great. Would return here if in Seward.

Review 98:It was quaint, friendly owner, clean and excellent location

Review 99:A little bit run down.

Review 100:Quiet, safe and near town. The manager was helpful

Review 101:parkinc in the back next to the garbage cans. bad smell. trying to figure out the tvfriendly person

Review 102:close to everything in town

Review 103:Older and very dated.

Review 104:Extremely friendly and helpful host. Very motorcycle friendly. Loaned me hose and bucket to wash the Harley

Review 105:Location n convenience; good n clean

Review 106:Very clean and comfortable room. Good location. The hotel owner is very nice and helpful. Strongly recommend !

Review 107:Place is a bit run down but very comfortable.

Review 108:James was so friendly and helpful and gave us coupons. Liked that we had a small full apartment.

Review 109:Great location, friendly owner, good value for money.

Review 110:This place is in poor condition. No breakfast.

Review 111:Good location. Friendly owner.

Review 112:We had to ask the owner and his company to stop partying and bequiet at 11 pm

Review 113:The place was filthy.

Review 114:Dated, more amenities than expected. Will stay there again.

Review 115:Conveniently located in Seward, close distance to Marina (<1 mile) and also to Sea LIfe Center.

Review 116:We were in the room next to the manager's office and he talks very loudly.

Review 117:Clean, full kitchen.

Review 118:Carpet was old and smelled musty.

Review 119:Price and location were great.

Review 120:Sagging bed

Review 121:Friendly host

Review 122:Worn down property

Review 123:Good owner, good location

Review 124:It was dark with shag carpeting and dirty windows.

Review 125:Great Location Clean - cleaned every day Friendly Host Coffee refilled

Review 126:I got bed bug bites and the walls were paper thin could hear people in the next room who were being obnoxious at 4am.

Review 127:Not clean

Review 128:Location

Review 129:Friendliness and helpfulness of the owner. Free, fast wi-fi, separate bedroom, refrigerator , two TVs and great cable.
