Reviews for The Benson, a Coast Hotel
Review 1:Parking was expensive but not a deterrent! Everything else was worth it.
Review 2:Room and view were excellent. Bed was so comfortable. Spacious room. Hotel had a lot of history. The staff was amazing! Stayed at a similar hotel a coulee of nights later. Would never stay there again. Would always come back to the Benson!!
Review 3:Everything was great! Overnight valet parking is $35, but was easy to use and very fast.
Review 4:The staff, from the doorman to the concierge to housekeeping to reception to the bartender were all excellent. Helpful, conscientious, and courteous. Fabulous drinks in the bar expertly prepared, easily walkable location, very comfortable room, and beautiful interior hearkening back to the hotel's history. Would highly recommend and will plan to stay again when next in Portland!
Review 5:The room. We rented one of their high end rooms with King bed. This hotel needs a serious upgrade of facilities and room. Cramped, drafty (single paned windows from mid 1900s that don't seal well). Terrible for Winter. Slow/small elevators, with some lights not working. Terrible parking situation. Website says free Valet parking but not if you book though booking.com. It ended up costing us $35/night plus tips. Had no clue. I was confused. Not sure who to blame.
Review 6:Nice location (I was doing a staycation), close to a LOT of stuff. Pretty good restaurants inside the hotel itself -- and TONs outside.
Review 7:The food at the Palm Court needs to step up their game...salads uninteresting, burger very plain and rib-eye steak mediocre at best. Clam chowder was very good.
Review 8:The staff, especially Jonah our wonderful bartender.
Review 9:We had to move rooms at 12:30 am due to what sounded like a motor running above us. The room we were moved to had a broken sink drain. If we wanted water to drain we had to manually lift the drain plug.
Review 10:The staff were very nice and helpful with any issues or questions we had.
Review 11:The absolutely only complaint was that they could use a little tiles in the shower. It's an old hotel though even that is kind of part of the experience. Evrrything else was spotless.
Review 12:The hotel is gorgeous. All the staff is friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful. There was easy access to go anywhere we wanted to go. Great restaurants within walking distance!
Review 13:Just an FYI, there is a parking garage across the street from the hotel. The hotel will valet your car there for twice the price of just parking there on your own. Always plenty of spaces!
Review 14:Rooms and lobby are stunning, and the location is amazing- walking to distance a ton of great places to eat, drink, and shop.
Review 15:Just a classy hotel in a great location. Nicely appointed bedroom with a very comfortable mattress; lovely bathroom. Wish we could have stayed another night.
Review 16:breakfast was very good, but extremely expensive, there was no proper teakettle in the room, only a coffeemaker.. the hotel was in a very busy street..
Review 17:the Benson is in an old building which is beautifully designed from the inside, the staff extremely friendly, the bar has excellent cocktails which are affordable, the rooms nice and spacey, breakfast good..
Review 18:I walked outside at 3 am to smoke and I was thirsty so I took a walk to find a store. I made a left turn walked two or three blocks then I made a right near what seemed to be a park. There was a gas station that had locks on the refrigerator. I've never seen that and I grew up in the south Bronx. The surrounding area was unsavory at best!
Review 19:Everything!
Review 20:It's a little pricey, but I also booked pretty late and the only hotels I found significantly cheaper were miles away and looked kinda sketchy, so take my complaint with a grain of salt. Water pressure wasn't great, but it also wasn't miserable. Rooms were a little small, but I also booked the cheapest and smallest available, so that might have something to do with it.
Review 21:Great location, excellent on-site dining, beautiful lobby, and super helpful and friendly staff. Beds and pillows were awesome. Slept like a baby. Would definitely stay here again!
Review 22:Unfortunately, the hotel rooms are dated and poorly set up. For example, we could not open the bathroom door with the mat down. the door would stick closed as well. The room was poorly lit.
Review 23:Clean room with space for a pet
Review 24:The lady on reception was an automatic mouthpiece, didn't listen to answers, poured out her spiel and repeated herself never listening to what was said. Very annoying !
Review 25:Beautiful heritage interior and staff other than the Asian lady on check in excellent
Review 26:Bathrooms are tiny and could use a renovation
Review 27:It is a grand old hotel. Public rooms are beautiful. Everything in the room was catered to add to our comfort.
Review 28:I didn't like how dated and worn the funiture in the rooms were. Primarily the couches and chairs (we had a jr suite) I feel a update of furniture is definitely needed. Carpet n bathrooms could also use a update.
Review 29:I liked the classic historical feel of this hotel. Lobby is beautiful as well as ballroom. The location was awesome. The staff friendly. And beds super comfy :)
Review 30:Hallway was warm and stuffy on the 12th floor
Review 31:Loved the feel and look of the hotel lobby--old and well-taken care of. My breakfast of house smoked salmon was delicious! Wine tasting was a nice extra treat.
Review 32:Lobby restrooms flooded overnight and ServePro were outside with a generator pumping water from 12am-12pm. Very loud and did not have a great nights sleep, even though this was no reflection upon the hotel or staff. Just wrong place, wrong time.
Review 33:Staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. Very helpful with any questions we had
Review 34:we asked for a quiet room, and we were facing the main road with traffic noise and sirens late at night and early morning. We stayed in room because it was a nice size. Bathroom was to small. Valet parking was expensive.
Review 35:good sized room. meals delicious. bed very comfortable. bar fridge snacks well priced.
Review 36:The rooms will probably need a refurbishment. If you stay in a room facing the internal courtyard there is noise coming probably from a big air conditioning engine.
Review 37:Loved the place, is very central, Pearl is at walk distance and the MAX line is literally 5 minutes walk
Review 38:Beautiful period decor. Relaxed atmosphere. Free upgrade into a spacious and beautifully appointed room. We did not want to leave. Bathroom was small yet functional and clean. Foofy slippers and robes provided.
Review 39:Fire alarms went off 3 nights during our 5 night stay and each false alarm lasted 1-2 hours. It turns out this is a long standing problem at the Benson, according to 3 different taxi drivers.
Review 40:Great location, 100 year facility recently renovated; staff is friendly and tries to help
Review 41:Coffee should have been avail longer in am and a free muffin or fruit would have been appreciated. Hated having to leave hotel just to get these small items in am
Review 42:Staff at restaurant and manager. There was incident 2nights in a row with alarm system and manager offered very fair compensation for the discomfort
Review 43:Bathroom is a little cramped and funky and plumbing wasn't great, but it is an old building. Some things could be maintained better on the upper floors. Need to change lobby music from 1980s muzak.
Review 44:Friendly staff, great location, beautiful vintage hotel. The lobby is stunning. The king bed was remarkably comfortable. Nice view from our room. Walking distance to Pearl District, easy access to public transportation.
Review 45:Expensive. Bathroom is too small and without a window, also it is to dark in there. There was always a noise in the room from the upper floor like from a heater or AC compressor.
Review 46:Clean
Review 47:Rooms and bathrooms (even in the newer part where we stayed) were smallish. Also seems rather expensive for what you get.
Review 48:Very nice . . . a classic old hotel.
Review 49:Courteous, helpful staff, beautiful lobby. Stayed here on my wedding night 30 years ago and it is just as beautiful now as it was then! Also, we even got an "emotional support fish" for our room, adorable!
Review 50:My room faced the interior/"equipment shaft", so my view was of deteriorating paint on the outside of the building, moss on the first floor roof, and zero sunlight. The updates and maintenance on the interior of the building were very good, but the view from my windows was kind of depressing...not what I expected.
Review 51:Easy access. Great Staff. Comfortable bed. Free Wi-Fi.
Review 52:The front check in staff remained professional at all times but were not helpful. I asked if there was a gift shop as I needed saline. They said no gift shop and that was it. They didn't let me know there was a Target 2 blocks away, nor did they offer me a map to figure it out for myself. It wasn't just this, but other small things that could have made a difference as it was my first time in Portland.
Review 53:The Valet staff were amazing. From the moment I drove up and dropped off the car for valet service to the last day of my stay, they were kind, opened doors for me, hailed taxi's for me (which was no small feat) and over all made me feel welcome.
Review 54:Perhaps as a young couple it would be more enjoyable to be closer to Division street where a lot of great restaurants are, though this is a simple cab trip away as required
Review 55:Large rooms, lots of staff
Review 56:Brunch was wonderful, although our waitress could have been a little more attentive.
Review 57:The front desk staff were excellent and more than willing to upgrade us to a jr. suite. Check out was easy as well.
Review 58:Extremely minor comment, hair dryer was horrible. Wasn't attached to wall. Got in the way.
Review 59:Great location. Staff was extremely helpful with anything we needed. Concierge services excellent.
Review 60:It wasn't a bad experience but it seems to me that if you're paying for a third guest in the room then there should have been three large bath towels, three wine glasses, three coffee cups etc. Once we asked for them, there were available every day but would have been nice if we didn't have to ask. Staff servicing the room were excellent
Review 61:location, convenience, friendly staff and the only hotel we could find in the area that could accommodate three travelers who wanted separate beds. Concierge was very helpful with maps, directions and advice.
Review 62:The surrounding 2 block radius is a bit seedy, liquor stores, bars and an exotic dancing place quite close. Wished it was more " cultural district" and less "Pearl district". Everything is very walkable though.
Review 63:Stayed one night with college daughter. Irs a lovely place, amazing lobby. Our room was smallish but very nice, the bed very very comfortable, a memory foam mattress topper and buttery soft sheets, slept very well. The price was steep but Portland is pricey hotel wise, so it is difficult to say it was a great value, but it was certainly a lovely place to stay. Skip the valet parking fees, we used a public lot 1 block away and rolled the suitcases. $33 vs $12 for the just under 24 hours we stayed.
Review 64:The bed was a little soft for me. But, otherwise, it was amazing!
Review 65:We were upgraded to a junior suite, and had plenty of space, windows with great views. The staff was fabulous every step of the wat. From the valet to the front desk!
Review 66:First attempt they gave me a key that did not work, then whenI had a key that worked someone else was in the room already. They apologized and did eventually write off the parking fee. I was disappointed because I had heard so many great things about this hotel. They should tell guests that they have coffee in the lobby and that it is only until 8 am. Luckily the women working in the hotel lobby restaurant gave me a cup for free since it was only 8:01 when I went down and the empty pot was still sitting there.
Review 67:The location was great Beautiful building The beds are amazing, comfortable and firm The valets were fast with great customer service The bar in lobby had great staff
Review 68:The service was great. The hotel lobby had turn of the century elegance. The bed was new, firm and very comfortable. The room and bathroom was nice, clean and quiet though pretty small.
Review 69:No bad experience
Review 70:We love the convenience of onsite bar and restaurant. We also liked the superior effort at safety ie the use of card for the elevator. The main lobby area is beautiful.
Review 71:Incredibly lovely stay. Professional and gracious staff. We walked from the Benson to NW Portland, the Pearl, and downtown. Would stay at the Benson again without hesitation.
Review 72:We were upgraded to a Jr. Suite for an additional $20 which included breakfast. Room had great view of the city. Complimentary Wine @ 4:00 in the beautiful lounge. Watched the Super Bowl in the hotel Bar! Close to Train Station.
Review 73:Uncomfortable bed Did not know coffee only served until 0800 in the lobby. Also not aware coffee in "drawer" in room? Had to pay $4.00 for cup of coffee to go.
Review 74:Clean Friendly staff excellant dinner waiter
Review 75:The transoms were missing from above the doors, but that is probably for fire containment reasons.
Review 76:I loved the lobby and the history of the place. All the staff were exceedingly gracious. The room was comfortable, clean, and retained the original crystal light fixtures and moldings on the coffered ceiling. Beautiful!
Review 77:Elevators were a bit slow.Valet parking has some issues
Review 78:The lobby and lobby bar were happening places. Luisa in the Executive Office was very helpfull.
Review 79:Entering the hotel lobby you are immediately sent 100 years back; the location is more than perfect, the staff friendly, the complimentary coffe in the morning more than welcome. The hotel is a little bit pricey, especially if you come with a car - but, that's how it was a century ago, wasn't it? :) The rooms are not the newest, but they are comfy and welcome you after a long flight from over the seas... Recommend!
Review 80:Bed was very hard.. Towels had someones long black hair on them. On the 10th floor the hotel was still very loud.
Review 81:Hotel staff were very professional and friendly
Review 82:nothing
Review 83:the front desk was very kind and helpful. the room was clean & it has 2 large - comfortable beds. clean bathroom. the lobby is warm and the chairs was comfy.
Review 84:There were drunk girls up and down the hall the whole night being very loud. I mentioned it to the front desk and it never did stop.
Review 85:I liked the appearance of the lobby.
Review 86:Getting a bit tired, but still a nice hotel. Drop off for check in is on street and challenging. It was pouring rain and with several cars checking in had to park across street to check in.
Review 87:Classic old hotel, good downtown location.
Review 88:Nothing
Review 89:Beautiful hotel evoking an elegant bygone era. Staff was welcoming and helpful. The atmosphere is elegant yet friendly. Beds are comfortable and our room provided every comfort.
Review 90:The bar staff on evening of Sep 30 who spent over 10 minutes cleaning the bar and tables. We had to ask if they were closing, or, could we order a drink. Reception staff on our arrival Sep 30 - instructions for the elevator and the card system was confusing. When we returned for more info, she said "I told you ..... etc." Very off-putting!
Review 91:The concierge was friendly, smiling and welcoming on our arrival Sep 30th. So too was a server at breakfast, Kathryn on both Sep 30 and Oct 2. And a waiter at dinner on Oct 1.
Review 92:300 bugs per night? That's too much or I should get more from their services
Review 93:Location is right in downtown very convenient restaurants pubs around the neighborhood
Review 94:Everything was perfect
Review 95:Staff were friendly and knowledgable of the area. Hotel was very fancy and well presented. Lots of shops and restaurants in the immediate area
Review 96:Some hallway noise. Sometimes it sounded like somebody was trying to come into our room, but I think that it was the room next door.
Review 97:The decor was beautiful. The beds comfortable and the shower excellent. The hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful with giving us directions and ideas. A very special experience. It is not your usual hotel. I really liked that we could leave our bags with the desk clerk after we checked out. That way we had the whole day to explore.
Review 98:The only reason I rated the quality of sleep fair is because of the noise from the street. We had to go buy ear plugs. The bed and pillows were both great but that does not help much if all the trucks and delivery vehicles are out at 4am right outside your window.
Review 99:The hotel is beautiful and all the staff that we dealt with were wonderful and very helpful. The location could not be better if you are there to enjoy downtown Portland.
Review 100:This hotel is a classic. We stayed 10 years ago and are glad we made the choice to return. The beautiful wood panelled foyer is gorgeous, with music in the lobby bar each evening to boot, our corner room was spacious and bright, the staff are very accommodating, and the location is unsurpassed. Next time we are in Portland, that is where we will stay.
Review 101:The hotel is gorgeous. It's centrally located - within easy walking distance to everywhere. The Concierge was incredibly knowledgeable - great recommendations for things to do and see and places to eat! Our room was perfect. Can't wait to go back!
Review 102:Stayed at the Benson after wrapping a long week of work. It was terrific...the only thing I'd say is the shower head was a bit busted up. Other than that...it was allgood
Review 103:The rooms show their age
Review 104:The staff was great. Enjoyed the Palm Court restaurant . The location was great because it is close to many places to visit . We did a lot if walking to see downtown .
Review 105:Valet parking costs at $33 a night is high. Bathroom maybe a little small for the hotel grandeur.
Review 106:Super location, right in the middle of downtown and on walking distance to any downdown area. Great bed, slept very well. Chique hotel
Review 107:The shower had terrible water pressure and was rather dimly lit and had no fan however it had a good amount of space.
Review 108:The staff were wonderful; particularly the Saturday night bartender, the concierge & bell boys. The lounge was architecturally exquisite and had a lively ambiance. The rooms were very clean and comfortable.
Review 109:Nothing to reply here.
Review 110:We were in Portland this summer and decided to stay St The Benson. One of our best decisions. Treat yourself to "old world charm" and stay here. Every part of our Benson experience was wonderful--people, service, room, location.
Review 111:Bathroom needs to be updated Closet doors in poor condition considering price of room
Review 112:Very Good bed , spacious room, valet staff and bell men very good. Excellent location.
Review 113:We got an upgrade to a room that was luxurious. It was on the night that we got married. So thankful for all the staff. The place was clean and well maintained. Thank you. The staff was super friendly, too.
Review 114:A few minor points: the fitness room was a bit small and crowded at certain times in the morning. Housekeeping was uneven; one morning we found we had no coffee in the room.
Review 115:An attractive, historic hotel. Beautiful lobby. We had a large, spacious room. Great location. Free wifi.
Review 116:Water pressure is dysfunctionally low. Shower in room 419 inadequate. Flow so slow it was very difficult to adjust temperature. Basically dribbled rather than sprayed. We would not stay in the Hotel again unless plumbing redone, a huge project (hope it can and will be done).
Review 117:We enjoy staying in historic hotels. Beautiful building and furnishings. Free in-room WiFi a a big plus.
Review 118:The bathrooms are small and shower pressure is pathetic. The first day we didn't even have wifi in our room, we had to go down to the lobby to use it. There seems to be issues getting into an elevator as well. The building is old which would account for some of these issues.
Review 119:I really enjoyed the beds and old world charm of the hotel. The location to breweries and shopping is perfection!
Review 120:I guess if there were any recommendations I would make, it would be to have a makeup mirror or better lighting in the bathroom for the vanity. The lighting was a little muted for any makeup application.
Review 121:From the moment I stepped out of the cab, I was instantly catered to by the staff. It was my first time in Portland in over 12-15 years so not knowing the city and where the hotel was, I was amazed at the ideal location. I had told my friend that I was staying at the Benson and he said to be ready for the hustle and bustle. I thrive on hustle and bustle. It was convenient to shopping since I ended up having to do just some minor shopping and ideal to many of the great restaurants Portland has to offer as well as going out for cocktails. But my friend and I also took advantage of the hotel's bar and lounge as well. He's lived in Portland now for 15 years and he was quite impressed with the hotel also. The rooms are quite and the beds are extremely comfortable. I would definitely stay there again.
Review 122:The Food is abominable. I keep thinking it can't get worse but it does with each order i place. So, I enjoy the wonderful hotel and go out to other places to eat. I don't mind that, except breakfast; it would be nice to be able to eat breakfast at the hotel as I have early business appts. Also, it would be nice to have a better TV package. I don't mind paying for movies.
Review 123:The Staff goes out of their way to be helpful, especially the Bell Staff and the Palm Court Staff. They actually make the Benson an excellent choice. The location is also excellent. I can walk to where ever I need to go. I like the lobby's old wood decor and comfortable sitting areas.
Review 124:It was beautiful, with historic woodwork and crystal chandeliers. The room was luxurious and comfortable.
Review 125:outdated bathroom
Review 126:spacious suite
Review 127:The valet parking was expensive.
Review 128:The location and the decor. The valet service staff was excellent. Room clean in a timely fashion
Review 129:Great location.
Review 130:The room
Review 131:Staff was not always responsive. Breakfast was vey poor variety
Review 132:Staff was polite and welcoming. Atmosphere was good.
Review 133:Elevators broken during entire stay!
Review 134:awful place horribly expe4nsive dump
