Reviews for The Mark Spencer Hotel
Review 1:The room was a bit cold, but the front desk helped reset the heater after two attempts. The heater did not reach to the bathroom or closet dressing area, so those remained cold. Breakfast was minimal and a small area. Not bad, but not impressive.
Review 2:The room was great, newly remodelled. The elevator, lobby and room hallways are more outdated but I saw a sign they are being renovated next.
Review 3:Great location for downtown Portland and the Pearl District. Within walkng distance of most things, streetcar is right in front, light rail is within a few blocks Breakfast is good. Wine tasting and lobby coffee are great bonuses..
Review 4:The walls were a bit thin and we had a group of young men in the room next to ours who were enjoying life at 3 am. However a call down to the front desk quickly solved the issue.
Review 5:Very clean and comfortable and in a perfect location for seeing Portland. A nice complimentary wine tasting in the afternoon. Friendly staff.
Review 6:There were no coffee pots in the rooms. A bit surprised for the amount you pay for the room.
Review 7:I loved the location and the beds were wonderful, comfortable and clean.
Review 8:Awful smell in room, no closet or drawers to unpack into. No luggage racks for suitcases, since you can't unpack. You either leave things on the floor, or lose your table top and desk top to suitcases rendering them useless. View into other rooms.
Review 9:Location, parking, nice beds, clean, kitchen. Lovely facility. Upgraded from early days. . Good coffee machine and basic breakfast offerings. Quiet.
Review 10:1).Rooms were so cold, even the heater was turned up to the max. 2).The water pressure was low that it took longer to get cleaned up. 3). I actually use the hotel refrigerator and found the one in my room unaccommodating. 4). The room that I selected was a executive suite and found it to be small. Just wish the layout could be displayed to determine if it enough space for folks that are little bigger.
Review 11:If you like to sleep in, steer clear until they finish renovations which start at 9am each morning. Also being next to housekeeping closet (laundry chute?) is quite disruptive. Room could use a more comfortable chair.
Review 12:Big comfortable bed. Nicely appointed and newly remodeled room. Good location in relation to downtown.
Review 13:There was a lot of light in the room due to the location, the blackout curtains were not placed to block the edges of the window.
Review 14:Very nice facility and room, we especially enjoyed the cookies and tea in the afternoon in the foyer and the wine tasting. Very nice location and lovely old building.
Review 15:They were renovating the room next to us. Jackhammer through paper thin walls when you are on vacation? Not so good. Also odd little things like having a coffee maker but no filters or coffee in the room. Also, no dedicated smoking area (just out on the street), my boyfriend had a scary confrontation with a homeless man :-(.
Review 16:Beautiful renovation! Great location.
Review 17:The parking isn't ideal -- the parkade is cramped and expensive to park in. Not a deal breaker though.
Review 18:The newly renovated rooms were really lovely. Our room was also quiet and the heating/cooling system was just right -- made for a really good sleep! The proximity to interesting stuff downtown (eg. Powell's is a block away, tons of restaurants and bars) makes this hotel truly great. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 19:Very friendly staff. Flexible with us on our anniversary - took great care of us! Sergio - the doorman from Portland State, was fantastic. As was Krit (Crit), John and the rest of the staff.
Review 20:Professionalism (or lack thereof) of the staff; asking for the room to be "refreshed", and only the bottom sheet changed, when there was a coffee stain clearly evident on the top sheet, leaving one to wondewonder how much "refreshing" was occurring.
Review 21:Location.
Review 22:Overflow parking was across the street on an unsecured lot.
Review 23:The mini-suite was well appointed and luxuriously comfortable. Loved the modern bathroom and kitchenette appointments too! Also cheese and wine happy hour and 24 hr coffee and cookies were special.
Review 24:It's a small thing, but given how excellent coffee is in Portland, the coffee at breakfast was disappointing.
Review 25:The staff went out of the way to accommodate our requests. The room was newly remodeled and lovely. I really loved the location and had fun exploring the Pearl District. I would much rather be in this area than further downtown. The hotel is making great efforts toward sustainability which I look for in a property.
Review 26:I don't like Thermorest beds they are too soft and too hot. The temperature of the water in the shower was not consistent.
Review 27:The location was awesome for shopping and entertainment. The staff was great and recommendations were good too.
Review 28:Paying for parking.
Review 29:Nicely remodeled room, surprisingly quiet. Close to Powell's Bookstore and Jimmy Mak's jazz club. Breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese...great amenities!
Review 30:Excellent location next to the Pearl District. The hotel was remodeled very nicely and incredibly clean. I wouldn't even hesitate to stay there again.
Review 31:Staff was very friendly, rooms were quiet and comfortable. Nice old building with character and class. In the middle of downtown Portland so very convenient to many restaurants and stores.
Review 32:Our room was facing a bar/restaurant named Roxy. If we had our window cracked it was hard to sleep with the noise. Definely a rowdy crowd party there cause we heard swear words and beer bottles breaking. It didn't bother us too much, but if we brought our two young kids, that would of been a problem. I would ask for a room facing another direction.
Review 33:Friendly and helpful front desk attendants and great rooms.
Review 34:There was nothing to dislike.
Review 35:From the very moment I arrived until my last day -- check-out is today; I had a reservation for 7 nights here -- I have had a wonderful time! The staff is professional and friendly, a wonderful combination! Pam, the general manager, even called ahead to the manager of a hotel in Hood River, Oregon, where I went to visit and stay over one night, and once I got there they upgraded me to a suite! Other staff members, Devon, Sergio, Krit, and Tyler, are upbeat and positive. My room was super comfortable and nicely appointed. It was my home away from home. I slept soundly every night. The Mark Spencer is located in a great section of downtown. I ate at nearby great restaurants and diners and food trucks. People in Portland eat well! This was my first visit to this city. I even bought a classic car at Memoy Lane Motors here in Portland. A 1950 Ford Fordor Custom Deluxe. I am having it shipped down to my home in Dallas. This was a fantastic trip! Jody from Dallas, Texas
Review 36:they were working on the room next door and the guys working woke me up early. The pillows were really uncomfortable. My room had an odor - like mold.
Review 37:Great location and access to both the Pearl District and downtown.
Review 38:Area around hotel a little run down, some parts of the facility needed repair, a dripping bathroom faucet, and the ceiling of our room had stains from a previous leak
Review 39:Location of my hotel in conjunction with my event. The staff was excellent. Bed was very comfortable for a hotel bed
Review 40:Just a little more various cereals for the breakfast and yoghurt without sugar.
Review 41:The authentic style, old painted bricks, you could put some more historic stuff (maps,paintings...etc),the location and the staff.
Review 42:Is there some way to get into the parking garage without parking your car on the sidewalk and walking up with the key card to unlock the gate?
Review 43:Wine tasting and breakfast. Quiet
Review 44:The first room we were given.
Review 45:The fact that when we complained about our room we were given a room with natural light and not looking into the atrium. Second room very good with street aspect. Very friendly and obliging commissionaire.
Review 46:the bed sheets were stained and although I asked the cleaning lady to change them, giving her a tip, she did not. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly, there were remaining used soaps from the former clients, still on the bath tub.
Review 47:The staff at the reception was very nice, helpful and available.
Review 48:A great hotel with super employees. They helped improve my stay by their attitude. It's walking distance to Powell's Bookstore. Close to nice eating and shopping. I will stay again.
Review 49:Pillows were huge and uncomfortable. Had a sore back and neck during and after stay. Fitness room is so poor it should be closed. Two old pieces of cardio equipment, no air conditioning, no weights, no room for stretches, no water dispenser (a shoddy drinking fountain). One of the front desk staff was nice but really clueless. He could not help with printing boarding passes, could not give directions anywhere, seemed not to know the city at all (never been to Washington Park)
Review 50:Location was great. Room was quite spacious and had large windows. AC worked well in hot summer.
Review 51:Very poor value for money. Outdated room although with a comfortable bed. The hotel is in a gradual period of renovation however. The breakfast is really poor. Bad quality fruit, questionable freshness of cereal and toast. For the money, I was expecting much better.
Review 52:Fantastic location, really close to powells, the pearl district and no more than 30 minutes walking distance from all the main attractions. Clean hotel.
Review 53:We'd stayed in an unrenovated suite on our last trip to Portland which was comfortable, but the new decor was very nice. Super cushy bed! Nice to have cookies, tea/coffee in the lobby and continental breakfast too. So convenient to Powell's and great shopping and food.
Review 54:unfriendly check in staff. Leaky faucet in bathroom. AC did not work in bedroom area. Parking 20 dollars a night (there is cheaper parking less than a block away) The bathroom was very old. They are remodeling so I expect it will get better.
Review 55:Great location on the edge of the Pearl district and downtown so lots of great places to eat
Review 56:for $400 per night, I expected the suite kitchen area to be less that 50 years old, and the bath to be somewhat updated. It was old, old, old. The couch in the kitchen area squeeked ever time i moved on it.
Review 57:the location and staff were creat
Review 58:There's some garbage left in our room... Breakfast is too simple no sausage no potato, and someone just took my toast from toaster...no coffee machine
Review 59:Location, stuff, wifi
Review 60:My room was right next to the elevator so I could hear it every time the door slid open and closed. It wasn't super loud, but was noticeable.
Review 61:Great location, super clean and nice modern design. Staff were super nice and helpful.
Review 62:It's a bit expensive, but comparable to other hotels in the area.
Review 63:Great location and atmosphere! Comfortable room size and bed. Staff was lovely!
Review 64:the night staff really sucked!! the pullout bed didn't work and he was suppodsed to bring up a bed, well he did and just pushed it it and slammed the door(his name was John) the morning staff acted like they didn't care!!
Review 65:the location was nice, and tghe check in staff were good
Review 66:The room - and hotel - are in need of renovations, which were underway. Though clean and sufficiently spacious, the room was past its prime. No easy access for those with big suitcases.
Review 67:Great location, the hotel was within walking distance of almost everyplace we wanted to visit, and close to the trams to travel to other locations. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 68:The location is excellent. It is just a 10 minute walk from Pioneer Square and surrounded by great restaurants and shops. The rooms are clean and comfortable.
Review 69:There was a very noisy block party going on adjacent to the hotel. I used the earplugs the front desk supplied and was able to sleep.
Review 70:The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Review 71:The breakfast was limited to yoghurt, hard boiled egss and breads. For the price I was paying per night I would expect something like fresh fruit. Why not have doughnuts from VooDoo or Blue Star?! Also, why was the New York Times not given to guests on Sundays? That's the day I really want to read it!
Review 72:There is no vending at this property. Be sure to stock up on water, juice, or pop if you want some later in the evening or morning.
Review 73:From the outside, The Mark Spencer Hotel is a nondescript building, but the inside and rooms are perfectly appointed. The hotel staff was friendly, and the location was spot on. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Review 74:Bathroom needs more hooks or towel racks if you want us to re-use. And shower water was tepid all 3 days.
Review 75:Great location, friendly staff and guests too. Bed was wonderful, esp. Compared with the before and after beds on our trip
Review 76:The rooms (at least ours #515) lacked sufficient sound attenuation. The couple in the room next to us talked until late into the night and we weren't able to sleep. The hotel breakfast is very minimal.
Review 77:Beautiful hotel in a great location with very pleasant, attentive and competent staff. Super clean!
Review 78:The hotel is located right downtown. Walking distance to many food truck pods, the waterfront and public transportation. The staff were very helpful and the parking is reasonably priced. We had an updated room and it was very nice.
Review 79:The staff were all very polite, friendly and helpful. Location was perfect. Room was very comfortable. I really enjoyed my stay and would stay again and recommend it to others.
Review 80:The computer in reception was very slow and as you pay after the first 15 minutes it could cost.....I think the computer is provided by an external vendor so not really a hotel issue
Review 81:Great hotel in a great location with lovely staff....perfect place to stay in Portland.
Review 82:The bed and sheets were very comfortable. We got there early and they had a room ready, so it was nice to check in early. We had one of the nice corner suite-style rooms, and it was very quiet.
Review 83:1. Sofa bed was very uncomfortable. 2. Had to make multiple trips to hotel desk because key cards didn't work. 3. Hot water problemmatic . 4. Had plumbing problems with toilet on first day. Supposedly fixed, but problemmatic again on last night. Had to pack up and move to another room at 11 PM. 5. Staff not always responsive. Told us at first we would have to pay for a different room. Eventual "sorry" was very insincere.
Review 84:Kitchenette was adequate. Location was fair.
Review 85:Close to great food and concert venue. Front desk gave us a great recommendation for dinner and they even have us a coupon for a free appetizer. Thank you
Review 86:They were renovating other rooms so it was a bit noisy for our toddlers day naps Room was very dry and again got our toddler coughing at night
Review 87:Location was ideal Price is reasonable Staff was great
Review 88:room dark with very small window to outside, no full size mirror. There is remodeling going on so it got noisy on Monday morning.
Review 89:location was convenient and within walking distance of downtown, Powell's Books, Saturday Market. Bed was comfortable with lots of pillows.
Review 90:fold out bed for the kids was terribly thin and uncomfortable.
Review 91:easy access to everything interesting to see and do in Portland. Coffee and tea always available. Friendly staff. Great bed.
Review 92:Excellent location, super helpful staff, and last (but not least) the room was absolutely beautiful, spacious, and had a ton of amenities (kitchenette, beautiful shower/bathroom, sitting room, comfy beds, beautiful decor) - this will be my go-to hotel in PDX now!
Review 93:The hotel was formerly an apartment bldg coverted to a hotel. Renovations have been done incrementally over the years. During my recent stay, on my floor the hallways were updated but the rooms are still old. The priority should be to fix up the rooms.
Review 94:The hotel is a stone's throw from Powell's Books, Whote Foods, Everyday Music, Deschutes Brewery, etc. Very convenient.
Review 95:Our room was beautifully decorated. Bed was super comfy. Location of Mark Spencer was perfect for the things we did downtown. Nice features here that we enjoyed were the flat screen tv, mini fridge, shower, wifi, and breakfast.
Review 96:Selecting 'quiet room' doesn't mean your neighbors will be quiet. A couple times in the late evening it sounded like someone walkyd by and banged their suitcase on our door.
Review 97:The beds were super comfy. There was wine tasting in the evenings, continental breakfast in the morning. The location is in the heart of downtown by all the restutaunts, bars and clubs.
Review 98:Staff knocked themselves out to find secure parking for our RV. Didn't quit until the problem was solved. Free breakfast includes a machine that actually makes a good triple shot mocha.
Review 99:Small parking garage so had to park in open lot around the corner.
Review 100:you're spending more than a night or 2. I thought it was a bit overpriced for someone who is town for only the night as I had no use for the in- room kitchen facilities.
Review 101:Walls were thin, could hear our neighbor's TV and conversation. Felt it was a bit overpriced for not having a bar/restaurant and for being an older building with older features.
Review 102:Staff was friendly, helpful, and gave us free parking since we paid for our pet. Great location. Would definitely stay again.
Review 103:The bed was a little soft for me, might be perfect for others. Breakfast was only basic, but fine for me as I had a kitchenette.
Review 104:Location on the border of downtown and the Pearl District. Quiet. Nice common sitting area, wine tasting, good workout room. Great friendly staff.
Review 105:the breakfast buffet could seriously use an upgrade. Some scrambled eggs, sausage, and a waffle maker would go a long ways towards this upgrade.
Review 106:Powell's books, great restaurants, wonderful suite, attentive staff
Review 107:I think the place is probably a little tired and in need of renovations. I think they know this as there does seem to be some work going on. The breakfast was ok but not the most extensive (no hot breakfast) so I wouldn't mind a bigger selection. But on the flip side the coffee machine was actually pretty good as it allowed triple espresso's...
Review 108:We asked as a little bit of a joke could we have towels folded into swans on the bed in the notes area when booking, then promptly forgot about it. When we arrived to the room there sitting on the bed were 2 excellently folded swans with a little box of chocolates. This certainly made our stay and we appreciate that they actually learnt how to do this in order to fulfil that request. Also the bed was incredibly comfy and the wifi was good... didn't get to check out the gym as we weren't there for long enough and were busy when we were there. But the important parts were good. Well done Mark Spencer!!
Review 109:the toilet roll in my bathroom was on the wall opposite wall to the commode??? My arms were not long enough!
Review 110:The staff. from on-duty manager to the guy who handled our baggage -- could not be better. Staying in the same hotel as the lead actor in the play we saw. Enjoyed telling him how much we had admired his performance!
Review 111:The breakfast was OK but I was hoping for something a little better than what I'd get at a Hampton Inn. Coffee was very good though.
Review 112:Staff are extremely helpful. Nice to get a NY Times at my door. Coffee at breakfast was delicious, and the little dining room was a lovely place to eat.
Review 113:It was raining....
Review 114:The staff was incredibly helpful, the hotel was near everything I wanted to see/do, the room was exceptional and the bed was luxuriant! And the breakfast was delicious. What a delightful place.
Review 115:Construction woke us up every day except Saturday and Sunday. For the inconvenience they gave us 3 nights free parking. . We had to pay 20.00 additional per night to park across the street in a very small parking lot and even though we had a small car it was hard getting in and out of the parking spaces. . The living room furniture was outdated..The kitchen stove was so old it had push buttons to turn it on.. Not happy with our stay at this hotel..
Review 116:The staff was very accommodating...
Review 117:Bathrooms had no counter space. Needed refurbished. Breakfast variety and quality
Review 118:Could open windows Having a desk Friendly and courteous staff Evening wine tasting Cookies and coffee reception Downstairs publuc space
Review 119:Perfect location for downtown/Pearl District access, including Powell's Bookstore and many excellent dining choices. Newly refurbished room was quiet, handsomely appointed and very comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Good continental breakfast saves money and time.
Review 120:It was pretty noisy in the mornings, we could hear pipes and coughing in the rooms above us. But I understand they are having some work done that might help the problem.
Review 121:It was a great location, great to have a seperate living room. Friendly and helpful staff.
Review 122:-limited hot water at peak morning time
Review 123:-great location -good variety and quantities in the continental breakfast -wonderful latte machine available all day -handy secure parking included in/out
Review 124:Nothing
Review 125:Everything !! The position was great , u cod walk to everything . Comfiest bed I've ever slept in . Staff really helpful , especially the concierge.
Review 126:a little bit dated - but it has lovely charm - and that keeps location affordable so really it's a positive for me.
Review 127:loved the centralized downtown location, charming rooms, next to an empty lot so we could walk our dog, onsite underground parking, fridge, large windows/natural light, curtains to block light, closet space, EXCELLENT customer service and friendly staff.
Review 128:The hallways smell funny and there was a hole in one of our walls. We were looking for something up kept and classy for a comfortable, romantic, one night stay and what we got was feeling like we spent the night in our grandma's basement. We are not high maintenance people, the pictures online are just very deceiving. This was not worth what we paid. We were very let down.
Review 129:Comfortable room, nice breakfast, cookies in the afternoon, cheese and a bit of wine for happy hour and an ever present coffee machine with a good selection of options. Garage parking (extra cost but convenient. Wonderful location near the Pearl district.
Review 130:Elevators a bit slow. Took some time for hot water to reach the shower on several occasions. Minor issues.
Review 131:The location was perfect for MAX, streetcar, walking, eating, drinking and coffee. I had a jr suite and was very pleased. Breakfast options were somewhat limited but didn't matter to me. There are many options for lodging in this area but I think this is at the top of the list. The sunrise and early evening view was spectacular from 607.
