Reviews for Historic Cary House Hotel
Review 1:Historic hotel with a turn-of-the-century elevator! Location is excellent, right in the middle of Placerville. Nice rooms and everything was clean. And the staff was excellent! If we were to visit Placerville again, we would definitely plan a stay in this hotel if a room were available.
Review 2:We were unable to go because of an emergency at home. We notified the hotel 30 hours before check-in but they insisted in charging us the full amount. We will never find out the quality of service because we will never stay there.
Review 3:It's an older hotel that is really awesome. The elevator is really fun it's over hundred years old. It's like going back in time. Its in downtown Placerville and you can walk to any place you need to go like the places to get coffee restaurants to eat a place called the bookery that you can find almost any book there it's just an awesome place.
Review 4:We wish the sliding metal gate in the elevator stayed open while trying to get our luggage inside. With that closing quickly and the elevator door closing quickly, it was tough getting us and our suitcases in.
Review 5:The hotel itself; we love old buildings and the feeling of history within. The young man working the front desk was really nice and helpful. He recommended a great restaurant for dinner. So close to everything on Main Street.
Review 6:The room I was given was smaller and not the type I reserved. But we fit comfortably despite that.
Review 7:I loved how every room was themed and the old time charm was preserved throughout the building. Also, the guests book in the room was jammed pack with information and really helped us plan our days.
Review 8:Great location, convenient parking, had an indoor spot to store our bikes. The hotel is very historical and impressive, the rooms feel like you are staying at grandmas house.
Review 9:Too noisy at night. Wanted to leave the window open instead of air conditioning but it was too loud. No breakfast included. Parking around the corner. I
Review 10:Nice lobby. Good location. Pretty balcony to sit at running across front of building. Should have included a nice country breakfast.
Review 11:bathroom had everything but felt like it needed an upgrade given that the hotel wasn't on the budget side.
Review 12:Historic hotel in a convenient location. Good sized bed and some nice touches in the room to give it a flavour of history ( fridge that looks like a safe).
Review 13:The noise from the street and the bar next door. If I were to stay again, I would request a room off the street.
Review 14:I loved the location and the convenience of the little stores and restaurants. Such a quaint town.
Review 15:No morning newspaper, poor elevator service, no real breakfast. Limited parking spaces.
Review 16:The location of the motel to our trip needs. The period art and information.
Review 17:We did not like the room, the windows are covered in ivy and you can barely see out. For a master suite there should be more light, a private balcony or outside space would have made the visit better. We will not return here and won't recommend it to family or friends.
Review 18:The lobby is beautiful and historic, and the elevator is unique. The front balcony saved the visit for us.
Review 19:The AC was not cool enough and we had little control of the temp in our individual room. The shower never had hot water. The coffee was less than desireable.
Review 20:The furnishings and historic atmosphere were very nice. The staff was good. Great, convenient location.
Review 21:The only thing we the quality of the in-room coffee. Worst taste I have ever experienced. Luckily, there are many places to get coffee!
Review 22:The property was clean, inviting, and centrally located. Plenty of restaurants were wishing walking distance. The room, although small, was clean and comfortable. The building itself is old, so things like uneven flooring actually add to the charm. We will definitely stay at Cary House again.
Review 23:None.
Review 24:Park your car and never have to get back in until you leave. Everything you need within walking distance. Antiques, boutiques, great food and wine just steps away.
Review 25:The hotel is very old and musty. If you have allergies, do not stay here. The floors are really creaky and the furniture is old and worn out. Our room had one little settee and a small rocking chair. It was smelly and dark. We struggled with the old elevator and the staff watched and did not offer any help! Pick another hotel.
Review 26:The location was excellent. A short walk to all the downtown area, restaurants and shops.
Review 27:It was a little noisy on the street.
Review 28:The staff were friendly and accommodated me and my little one very well. The hotel is beautiful and very well taken care of for such a historic spot. I loved the signage (wry). It was clean and comfortable.
Review 29:I booked a queen suite through booking.com. I was given a queen room - that was a big difference because it did not have a seating area, and we needed that for family. I was told by management that they didn't "know what happened." Was it booking.com?
Review 30:Only problem: the smoke alarm did an intermittent scream 8x during the night. The guest book in the room had already noted this, but it wasn't fixed.
Review 31:Loved the history, the location, the room decor, the really old elevator, the 2nd floor balcony overlooking Main Street, the wonderful Heyday Cafe across the street.
Review 32:I was supposed to get a "sitting room" and a refrigerator. I spoke with the desk clerk and she stated that their was a wedding party that had booked 2 years ago. I was not impressed that this was the reason I was given for not getting the right room. I also spoke with the manager and he stated this was a problem with the booking on-line and would not discount my bill but said he would have to talk to the booking agent and that was where the problem was. He also said there was a refrigerator and that it was underneath the TV. It would have been more evident if it was under the coffee machine, but it looked just like a piece of furniture used as a TV stand. I'll never stay there again, it was quite expensive for not getting what I had reserved.
Review 33:I love the location.
Review 34:My room was comfortable, roomy & clean. I used the Milton room for a business training meeting & the space worked out great for a group of 10 people. All hotel staff were really helpful.
Review 35:Comfortable bed, updated bath, and charming, quirky decor. Loved the elevator! Friendly, helpful staff gave breakfast/dinner recommendations, and...no ghosts, just a great night's stay.
Review 36:didn't like leaving a relaxed/comfortable environment
Review 37:location was excellent for a birthday celebration, with good food and good music nearby... good shopping for men and women thanks to all the interesting shops
Review 38:This is the third time we've stayed here while in Placerville visiting family. The staff is always very friendly and helpful, the hotel itself is charming and very convenient. We've always stayed during Halloween and being able to sit on the balcony and watch the activities is such a treat!
Review 39:I found nothing to complain about here, at the Historic Cary House.
Review 40:The staff was more than polite. Excellent customer service; clean, well decorated rooms; great location; free parking. I can't wait to stay again!
Review 41:Let down by no breakfast, having to go elsewhere in the town to find food when few places are open It's quite expensive for what it is, trading on it's reputation
Review 42:Great location just of highway 49 in the centre of the town. Nice historic hotel, lovely setting and lobby, nice balcony to watch the world go by, very friendly staff
Review 43:That I had to leave.
Review 44:This great old hotel is in the town center. There are many great places to eat and drink just out the front door. I walked to a local gold mine one morning, lot's of history in town.
Review 45:1.They were confused with my reservation, first they seemed to have me for the day after, however i showed them my email confirmation from Booking.com and they said some glitch with their system probably. 2. I made a reservation for $119 and ended up paying 30% more, they explained that the Hotel only has one room available for guest with Dog,so they had to give me the suite that of course cost more. lucky me they had that room available that night otherwise i would've have to go somewhere else i guess...
Review 46:Great location, main street of HangTown / Historic Hotel / Its the best one in the area / // Guest with dogs be aware that they only have one room dog friendly, better check availability before making a reservation
Review 47:Huh?
Review 48:Great stay, staff was really helpful, told us where to eat dinner, super good, gave us a suggestion on where to go picnic! super good guys, we will be back.
Review 49:old ,tatty and expensive for what you got.
Review 50:Not a thing!
Review 51:Greeted with a smile! Beautiful room and extremely clean...quietest night's sleep ever in a hotel!!
Review 52:We absolutely loved this historic hotel! Room was very clean and bed was super comfortable! Can't wait to visit again!
Review 53:Beautiful place with positive energy. Front desk clerk dressed as Captain America for Halloween was friendly and professional.
Review 54:The room was clean and location was perfect! The bed was so comfortable - there was nothing that we needed.
Review 55:Staff was very helpful. The first room did not work for us. We were moved to a room that suited our needs much better.
Review 56:nice town
Review 57:Floor was slanted and the bed had a valley; but its an old building so you can't expect luxury.
Review 58:Old charm
Review 59:Noise at night from the street.
Review 60:Unique. Sitting on balcony and relaxing.
Review 61:No one mentioned breakfast, so we were not aware.
Review 62:Loved the history and artifacts to look through.
Review 63:Rooms were a bit drab.
Review 64:Close to restaurants and shopping. Lovely staircase. Charming elevator.
Review 65:Nothing.
Review 66:The location is right in the center of the town.
Review 67:Nothing
Review 68:Very quiet
Review 69:Nice, historic place. The master suite had a comfortable king size bed, refridgerator and even a stove if you wanted it.
Review 70:Bad coffee...
Review 71:Great Old West ambiance!
Review 72:Location and charm of an old building.
Review 73:Great old hotel and friendly staff.
Review 74:The staff was friendly. The room was very nice. It was located in the middle of town so we could walk to all the stores.
Review 75:A bit pricey but a perfect location and friendly staff
Review 76:Beautiful setting with a fascinating history of the California Gold Rush
Review 77:We were given a different room then we were told we would have.
Review 78:The location is great. Walk to dinner, shopping or night spots.
Review 79:We stayed on a Tuesday and I thought the price would have been a little cheaper
Review 80:Too much noise outside
Review 81:The history and the location in centre town
Review 82:We enjoyed being downtown and within walking distance of several restaurants.
Review 83:Wi-if didn't reach our room furthest down the corridor.
Review 84:Great staff, historic hotel, great location.
Review 85:The door had key card problems.
Review 86:The staff was excellent.
Review 87:The loud bar across the street
Review 88:The beauty and history of the hotel
Review 89:No real breakfast for the cost.
Review 90:Had a front room section to the room with a small couch.
Review 91:Hard to get ice when front desk busy
Review 92:Location: walking to fun shops, galleries, restaurants and bars!
Review 93:No food or bar in the hotel.
Review 94:Price way too high for value.
Review 95:Great staff, clean /comfortable accommodations in a historic environment. Just steps from the door to great restaurants and shops.
Review 96:we asked in our reservation for a room not near the elevator and got one in front of it!
Review 97:good sized and comfortable room with kitchenette
Review 98:The size of a closet. ..cold.....no hot water.
Review 99:Location
Review 100:No ghostly encounters :)
Review 101:Haunted history of Cary House.
Review 102:Everything
Review 103:Only coffee and juice were supposedly offered but only til 9:00a.m. We missed it. Priced high when compared to the National Hotel in Jackson which was much nicer, cheaper and had an excellent included breakfast.
Review 104:Good location; charming old lobby and staircase.
Review 105:The room was very small. "CONTINENTAL" breakfast was disappointing, cheap and had very little to chose from, coffee was way to strong. I did not like that we had to check in before 8PM and we had to estimate a time of arrival.
Review 106:This building has nostalgia and charm. I is centrally located on Main St. It was very clean and staff was helpful and friendly.
Review 107:patio over street not open enough, no public coffee, tea, cookies, or even lemon water in the lovely lounge area for hotel guests, no little extra to brag about to others
Review 108:ambiance and location
Review 109:Really nothing . The elevator was out of level when you got on and off it but who cares ! It went with the atmosphere ,!! It was great
Review 110:It was a wonderful room where we could look out our window and see the down town activities
Review 111:I booked the master suite through Booking.com at half off the normalprice. I found out the master suite didn't come with a bathtub, so Icalled and spoke to Mandy, at the hotel. She said that the queen suitedoes have a bathtub and she can just change the reservation. I knew itwould the room would be a little less but figured it's still a suiteand was ok with being charged the master suite price. When I got there Idid not have a reservation for the queen suite, so was given a deluxeking. That sounds deluxe but it's just a room with a bed and tv; noteven close to a suite of any kind. Their key pad didn't work aftermidnight so we were told by two people at the desk, that we almost werenot going to get in. Sooo we would have been locked out on New YearsEvening? When I was given a chance to find out what my charge was forthat tiney room, that they insisted had a refridgerator, I was told Iwill be charged what my regular reservation charge is. So I was chargedfor the Master Suite but got a generic room instead. I complainedthrough Booking.com and they said the hotel will grant me a refund of$20, that they have still yet to give me. I will not stay there againand my boyfriend and I like to go out of town and stay in cute littlehotels. They should take better care of their customers.
Review 112:The hotel is very cute and I love the history involved with it. The bedis quite comfortable also.
Review 113:That I was only there for three days. I hope to be back in the not too distant future.
Review 114:The character of the hotel, its history, and the fact that it's in the heart of the city of Placerville
Review 115:The room was so bad we left that night and drove home. The desk staffindicated that since we were only there one night that is the room theyassign. There was a small wooden bench and a straight back wooden chairas the only places to sit. The rug was torn up and the comforter on thebed was clearly an old one in poor shape. I could go on but I will not.
Review 116:Not worth $550 a night. For that money should have had nice, thick, fluffy towels and a decent sized bar of soap. Saturday night mywashcloth completely ripped apart!
Review 117:It was so noisy with the bar on the street open and the walkway between the hotel and the other building next door. Heard a police dog barking for about 10 min. someone throwing up down on the walkway.Had to sleep with the TV on to get rid of some of the noise. Our room was soooooo hot when we arrived. need blinds on the windows or something to keep the heat out. No air conditioning as it was turned off Oct 1st according to the staff
Review 118:The location
Review 119:Continental breakfast was FAR SHORT of expectations. There are two bakeries close by where rolls, etc could be ordered. We ate at coffee shops both mornings we were there.
Review 120:Great restoration of an historical hotel. Staff was very helpful in recommending places to eat and wine tasting.
Review 121:Since the building is over 100 years old, and we were on the top floor, the floors are not level. Unfortunately, that meant the head of the bed sloped downhill, which was somewhat uncomfortable.
Review 122:Cary House is an historic hotel from the California gold rush days - it really doesn't fit any of your categories above. The staff was great and the hotel is pretty cool. Lots of interesting history. Our suite was large and had everything we needed.
