Reviews for Hotel Riviera
Review 1:Even though this hotel will usually be the cheapest one in the area, it is not worth it. Spend the extra 20-30 to stay somewhere else. My girlfriend was so freaked out after seeing bugs in the restroom that she slept sitting in the desk chair.
Review 2:The moment you step out of the hotel theres the insecure feeling you get . Plus the bed was uncomfortable. Kept moving and you had yo practically beg for the heating to be put on. I actually saw a roach...
Review 3:The room with the view. Not much though but good lanscape view
Review 4:The location was extremely unsafe. The room was dirty and the hotel seemed to house local homeless people. I had people screaming in the hallways and banging on doors. For $70 a night I was disgusted.
Review 5:The staff were friendly but that was about it. The hotel itself was apourling.
Review 6:Worst place ever and I have a lot of experiences with differenthotels. This particular hotel, shouldn't even be an option on thebooking site. You should only go there with your girl, if you want tobe dumped ????.
Review 7:Nothing.
Review 8:Room is very old. Cockroaches, heater not working properly. Smell like old building. A homeless people asking money at entrance
Review 9:Food delivery to your room. Staff are nice. Car park is secure for $5/nite
Review 10:Since this is a building that has weekly and continued guests, they can be kinda rude. Did have a visitor and we did get a little noisy, the residents were extremely rude because we were so loud. Like people are supposed to enjoy good sex. In a hotel. Otherwise, it was cool. I appreciated the Security Guard who did tell the other residents to stop with their continued mocking...
Review 11:The historic feel of the building.
Review 12:I don't know where to start from Hotel was dirty outdated unfriendly staff in the middle of the ghetto I'm lucky that me and my family didn't get shot or robbed this place should not be allowed to be called a hotel it is more of a halfway house than a hotel I'm really disappointed with the website for recommending this hotel never again never again
Review 13:Extremely old building and interior, no phone or clock in room, no shuttle service to airport, no access to restaurants within walking distance except McDonalds.
Review 14:the staff members were not so friendly, the bathrooms were not that clean either but the room was fine, sometimes late at night you might hear noise on the corridors between the rooms, other than that i found everything is so good for the value of money
Review 15:the location was very good, near to Newark airport, 5 minutes drive, and there were two buses which passed across the street from the hotel which would take you to the city and the train in about 10 to 15 minutes
Review 16:the rooms were poorly ventilated, paint chiping from walls, blinds broken, heat way too hot, no ventilating for bathroom. elevators smelled
Review 17:the fact that it was close to airport
Review 18:This is undoubtedly my favourite hotel in a six week trip to the US. The room had a wooden floor, excellent décor, flat screen tv and was quiet. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
Review 19:The price, the rooms, the location - far from Manhattan, but a good way to see the surroundings of New York and easy to travel by public transport. A movie theatre in a walking distance. The hotel has obviously seen better days, but has its own kind of charm
Review 20:Our first room was nice, clean and large #715. They moved us to a lower floor the next day because the power was going to be out, carrying our baggage down 7 flights would have killed us. The new room 234 had roaches and was small, clean in every other way but in need of some renovation. The area is not the best either, I would not want to wander the streets late at night, but that could be said for most places.
Review 21:The place has an old world charm, run down but acceptable. There is a small food shop on the premises, the man that runs it makes really nice food, well worth trying. Secure parking at $5.00 per night. Close to buses, easy to get around.
Review 22:The neigborough of hotel is really trashy. So bad, that my old parents were afraid to go outside at the night. Wifi most often doesnt work.
Review 23:Its cheap and not far from NewArk Penn Station. Staff was nice and helpfull. Rooms wer big and clean.
Review 24:The room was ok but there was a horrible noise all night long coming from the outside that barely let me sleep! Like if they were building something in the hall or outside the room at 3am! Not a good rest at all!
Review 25:It's close to Newark Int Airport
Review 26:There are people live as residents in the building. Three is no free parking for customers. We have to pay. And somebody told me that a dangerous areas. Maybe a drugs area? I don't know. I have to leave the same day before it gets dark.
Review 27:Nothing I like. I was scared
Review 28:Very dangerous traffic outside the hotel - when the light is white you still have to look for cars coming fast from two directions and on the other crossing cars have crossed white lights. I have also had to wait more than ten minutes for a light to change. I have stayed seven times in the last three years because prices in Manhattan have been prohibitive or hotels have been full. This time the gassing in the bathroom has been noticeable and, I think, dangerous. There can also be a strong smell of gas in the elevator. The convenience store is useful but guests would need to go out to get food from the supermarkets or MacDonalds.
Review 29:Attractive, spacious rooms, all outlooks attractive. Attractive area. Not bad commuting to Manhattan.
Review 30:The hotel is situated not in the best area. The access to the parking lot is gated and had to be unlocked with a key by security when leaving. When entering I had to call the front desk for the gate to be opened to park.
Review 31:The hotel is located about 35 minutes from the NYC. The room was comfortable and quiet.
Review 32:For starters, when we arrived to check in, the person at the front desk asked, " You have reservations here?" like as if we didn't belong there. The hotel was behind times and down-rodded with what appeared to be perhaps homeless people living weekly or monthly there. The bathtub had bugs in it, and there was no telephone in the room.
Review 33:Nothing...
Review 34:The neighborhood was scary not the best part of town.
Review 35:The staff was helpful and polite. Security was seen throughout the hotel which made me feel a bit safer.
Review 36:The wifi only worked for an hour upon arriving, and when told the staff just used the fact that their tech/maintenance person wasn't on site. I depend on internet when I'm not home. SO :/
Review 37:I like the feel of the hotel, floors, the marble architecture and such (ei actual key verses a keycard)
Review 38:Me, My fiance and our three year old son stayed at this hotel because we had a wedding in Jersey ,We live in north Carolina. We barely stayed in the hotel we woke up early for dressed and spent the entire day with family and only came back late to sleep.... The first night was fine we left that morning and saw the maid and she asked what room we were in if she could clean it, we told her 733 and absolutely we came home that night opened the door to find roaches all over the floor... My fiance killed them while my three year old was scresming. We don't scare easy so once he killed them we settled down and just left it alone figuring every place has a few bugs. Then my three year old went to use the bathroom opened the door and there was about 10 more big roaches all in the bath tub on the floor by the toilet my fiance once again killed them all!!! At this point I told him leave the light on they will be scared of the light... We lay down in bed and try to just make the best of it.... But we sat there watching more and more roaches leaving the bathroom while we were in bed. We killed about 20 of them and there was still more. THIS IS DISGUSTING! I packed all my stuff shook everything out and my family spoke to the woman we were very poilite but refused to stay our original three nights.... We got a refund of 160 which I have yet to receive. After I paid 230$ my three year old won't sleep alone... And we had to stay with a friend in Staten island and pay bridge fair going back and forth for the following two days... This was just an awful experience and it truly ruined our vacation.
Review 39:The price
Review 40:There was no heat. Blanket was too thin. No extra toilet tissue in room. Wasn't really comfortable leaving my car on the street.
Review 41:The bed was comfortable.
Review 42:The building itself look like a renovated project building and so did the rooms wasn't what I really expected to see
Review 43:The TV was up to date & the bed was comfortable
Review 44:The neighborhood is not the best, we had to park our car in their parking lot because they had a lot of incidents with guets' cars who had parked on the street.
Review 45:Great price per night, our room had a queen size bed, a fridge, cable and TV, and a clean bathroom, although we found two tiny ants/bugs/roaches in the room.
Review 46:Upon checking in, the counter man was extremely rude! Check in is at 1:00pm. We arrived around 12:30. All we wanted to do was park our car and relax after traveling. The man told us he was going to charge me an extra 20.00 for an early check in when all we wanted to do was park our car and wait for the room. He had the worst attitude and there was no warm welcome what-so-ever! The room we were given was just OK. I have never been to a hotel where they do not give out shampoo or even put an Ice bucket in the room! Oh and let me not forget there isn't a telephone in the room or an alarm clock. I had to take a freezing cold shower because they ran out of hot water. Upon check out, that was even worse than the checking in part! That man who worked the counter truly needs to find another job. He was horrible! We were told even before we booked that if we paid an extra 5.00 for the day, we could leave our car parked and go into the city. The worker proceeded to argue and become irate when I told him this. Everything after that was an argument. He was horrible. Both of the guys who worked the counter need to lose their jobs because they have no idea what the word "hospitality" means. The location is terrifying as well! It's in a horrible section of Newark and honestly, I thought I was going to get mugged or shot! The morning of check out the Newark Police were there because of drugs. I have never experienced this and I truly would never recommend this hotel to anyone!
Review 47:Absolutely nothing!
Review 48:Old lifts, which were kind of scary..
Review 49:I belive, that back in time the hotel was very nice. Now ist a bit old, but it has a style and I like it. Nice hotel close to Prudential centre, where we visited NHL match.
Review 50:Everything
Review 51:Got to the front door at this hotel and decided there is no way we were staying very bad area very dirty looking remind me of the factory don't book I wasted $65 cheaper deafly not worth it
Review 52:People in the local area have a very negative perception of the HotelRiviera - the lady who was organising the taxis at the airport looked atme with incredulity when I told her where I was staying and said 'that is not a good hotel' and advised me to stay somewhere else!! Imet this reaction several more times during my stay when telling peoplewhere I was staying. Although the room and the linen etc appeared clean,I found a couple of dead insects in the drawers and saw two what I willassume were mice run across the floor!!! To be fair to the hotel Inoticed on the notice board that they are trying to deal with this byhaving regular visits from an exterminator! The hotel was rather old butwork was in progress to carry out some renovations. The weather wasstifling hot during my visit - the a/c in the room worked well andit was nice and cool but the corridors, elevator and lobby wereuncomfortably hot!!Generally had mixed feelings about the hotel but found it adequate for my stay and I didn't come to any harm in spite of the warnings I received!!!
Review 53:The staff were friendly and helpful, lots of useful tips on noticeboard. The hotel was convenient to a good bus service to downtown Newarkand the Penn Station directly to Penn Station New York. Also good busservice to the Jersey Gardens outlet shopping mall just three blocksaway. Useful little shop/café at back of hotel lobby providing nicebreakfast sandwiches, coffee and drinks. Room was very spacious andgenerally linen and towels were clean - but see below!! Convenient tothe airport - either short taxi ride $17 or bus to Penn station followedby short train journey. An interesting hotel in an area not usuallyvisited by tourists. Quite good value for the size of the room.
Review 54:Rather noisy because of cars - at front of hotel. And water dripping from air conditioning unit above at night. Also, not many restaurants nearby if you have a car but good supermarkets. Watch trasffic - and I had to wait 10 minutes without the light turning white, even though others crossed on red (I was afraid to).
Review 55:Spacious rooms. I was allowed to store my bag.
Review 56:The area was very bad and noisy. The building was very old and dirty. I will never go back there even for free
Review 57:There was nothing I really liked about this hotel!
Review 58:The night clerk asked why we chose to stay in such a bad location. Said there was a good chance that our car would be broken into.
Review 59:It was inexpensive $70 a night, and the room kind of felt homey...
Review 60:Building is pretty old, need a maintaince. Saw a cocroach on the bath, but I've seen them and in more expensive establishments in the USA.
Review 61:At least everithing works: A/C, water, lights and TV. It's not located at some fancy neighborhood, but it's close to the New Ark Airport (7 minutes by taxi).
Review 62:Negatyvity of some employes and taxi drivers about the building end the location of hotel. it is a buitifull building in need of reno.
Review 63:Everything for a short stay.
Review 64:I think I will never come back to the Riviera hotel after what I experienced with the service.
Review 65:I had bad, bad experience with the hotel Rivera. Until the Gentle manager resolve my problem in the morning of Friday 18,2015.
Review 66:my room was missing a lot of the little things. No coffee pot setup with cups. No ice, no microwave, no ashtray in a smoking room, and the pillows were so worn down and thin with a max of two per room. No phone to reach from the desk
Review 67:Location is most convenient. Antiquated ambiance with a relax feel.
Review 68:The surrounding area, especially when travelling back at night, however it was worth it for the price of the hotel and we did not mind getting a taxi back.
Review 69:Staff were very helpful. Hotel was reasonably priced. Not to far from Penn Station. Rooms were big and comfy.
Review 70:Outside look, inside look, poor location, poor room cond., disguasting bathroom, WiFi did not work. Next time I'll pay $30 more and will stay in any other network hotel.
Review 71:It was available.
Review 72:The neighbourhood is not great! And the hotel itself is in such a run down condition. Have never experienced such a sorry stay with any of my booking .com reservation
Review 73:Nothing! It was very disappointing!
Review 74:Horrible location, the entire area around was very dirty and trashy.
Review 75:Nothing, very unsafe area. Very ghetto surroundings and I couldn't help but wonder if rooms were rented out by the hour. The web site was extremely misleading.
Review 76:The roads outside the hotel seemed to become more dangerous as I stayed there, with a car and bus going through a green light and a car coming very fast around a corner during a green light. I also had to wait ten minutes twice for the light outside the hotel to turn green while it was also very hot. i don't know whose responsibility the lights are but it seemed a literally murderous policy. Drivers should have no problems and would also have more choice in terms of food, although there are adequate restaurants and food shops nearby.
Review 77:It's a very nice hotel and it is a relatively stress free in terms of surveillance.
Review 78:Hotel is located in 100 yrs old historic building, in which facilities have not really been updated since the 1970's. Elevator is old and rickety. Rooms are not soundproof. Furniture and bathroom facilities are old. Area in Newark where hotel is located is unsafe, which is apparent by security guards at hotel entrance, including a guard remaining outside in front of the main entrance at night. Hotel has no parking. We arrived at the hotel in the middle of the night, and were told by the hotel reception staff that we should leave our car in the street. However as our car was a rented luxury convertible, we felt uncomfortable leaving the car in the street. The hotel guard directed us to a nearby parking lot located behind the hotel. However, driving there at night led us through a few side streets which felt very unsafe with some people standing around in the street.
Review 79:Location of hotel is good, close to Newark airport. Hotel room was very clean. Main entrance of hotel is safe due to locked door and security guards.
Review 80:This place needs to be renovated. There is a general air of decay and neglect. With a little bit of attention it could be made really excellent.
Review 81:The location is good if you want to stay in Newark. The staff very helpful, polite and really go out of their way to make your stay nice.
Review 82:The warm reception
Review 83:The employes at the reception where all friendly, accomodating and everly ready to assist you with any help you need,i really commend them even in there busy schedule somtimes with many customers at there desk they still make out time to attend to you
Review 84:I was annoyed when we arrived because I had called ahead to ask if there was parking, and was told yes, for $5 extra. What the person didn't explain is that it is not guaranteed; we arrived very late (past midnight) and were told there were no parking spots left. The guy at the reception desk was very apologetic and reassured us that the night watchman would keep an eye on our car, which we street-parked next to the hotel. It worked out fine, but I do think the hotel should warn people who ask about parking that it is limited.
Review 85:This hotel is in a not so nuce area of Newark, but its less than 10 minutes from the airport, which is what we wanted. When we first arrived we were a bit put off by the neigborhood, but the rooms turned out to be a nice surprise. They were large and clean and the beds were very comfortable. Its an old-fashioned, simple, indpendent hotel; the kind of place that is rare to come by today. The "bang for the buck" was excellent; we got one room for ourselves and a little suite (room 168) for our children, who actually each had their own room and shared a bathroom. Each room (the children's suite counted as one room) including taxes, was only 85 dollars. The staff people were very nice.
Review 86:I did not like a single thing about this hotel. Poor location, difficult to travel to NJ and NYC. Highly discomfort beds, one can see flies, mosquitoes and bugs in rooms and beds. This hotel is asking very high money for very low quality. Simply not value for money. I don't recommend this to anyone.
Review 87:It was in the middle of the ghetto, and the outdoor secuity guard pressured up to tip him. It was implied that he would look away if something were to happen to our car if we didn't tip him.
Review 88:Polite, friendly, and helpful staff. Felt safe even though the neighborhood didn't.
Review 89:The neighboorhood is possibly bad. We were three girls being followed around by the police, so we felt super safe though :)
Review 90:Really cool staff who helped us a lot with everything we needed. It's not a high class hotel, but you get what you pay for, which is awesome. I'd definetly stay there again and recommend anyone else to stay there. Taxi from the airport was 20 dollars.
Review 91:The women at the front desk had an attitude and was too busy talking outside to her friends to help your guests. Very unprofessional.
Review 92:I liked the close vicinity to the prudential center.
Review 93:Awful! It looks like the worse motel ever. Shady men and women everywhere. It felt unsecured and hazardous for my family. They delayed almost an hour to help with bad form. I would never return there.
Review 94:The neighborhood was sketchy, I would have never come with a car here. It took a little longer to get into Manhatten than others had said , it is more like hour and half to two hours.
Review 95:Room was comfortable, surprisingly clean, simple and clean. This is a historical building so don't look for fancy upgrades but it suited us well enough .
Review 96:Regrets.".......Filthy, smelly, dirty, bugs, noise, no smoking sign but smoking smell all around the area, didn't feel safe at all, we were up all night because of the noise. We don't want to tell anyone that we were in that hotel for a day
Review 97:Nothing
Review 98:Very old hotel with poor facilities
Review 99:This is a very old hotel with poor facilities - flooring / water pipes / locking system / telephone system are all outdated and difficult to use. The location is not at all convenient.
Review 100:I never had a worst WiFi experience in a hotel before. The WiFi is completely unrealiable and unsteady. I was there for a business purpose and I needed it. My phone worked faster than the Wifi. Oh, they dont just have one Wifi. Supposedly every floor has its own Wifi name "floor 6" Wifi, "floor 5" etc. None of them is working and I spent most of the time trying to find a connection. Once I did it was slowest than a 2G connection and it was disconnecting all the time and I had to do it all over again. That is not a Wifi service. I am comfortable staying in an old building but at least they should provide a decent modernization. And a Wifi is not a modernization for any hotel. It is almost essential. The building is more than 100years old with old floors, bathrooms and evelators.
Review 101:It is close to downtown
Review 102:Lousy is the word......highly over priced ....it can be categorised as ahostel with basic service.....no facilities at all
Review 103:Nothing to be liked in this hotel except it's photograph in theBooking.com website....
Review 104:Good location to visit New York City. Hotel is in a run-down neighborhood, old hotel with spacious rooms. Our room with two Queen beds also had two separate rooms for each bed, so that was very nice. Free parking was available down the street (not at the hotel property). We never felt unsafe.
Review 105:Facility is rather old, bathroom is old but serviceable. No hairdryer, no mini shampoo. No central air conditioning, but the room units work well. Location of hotel is in a neighborhood that looks like it could have problems.
Review 106:Bed was great. Place was clean. Staff was very friendly, helpful and courteous. Guarded parking was a great idea.
Review 107:I heard from people around as well as from the receptionist to not walk around in the neighbourhood but take a cab whenever I wanted to go somewhere. I didn't dare to walk around the neighbourhood after that.
Review 108:The spacious room, the old style house. Friendly staff.
Review 109:Bad part of town. Parking sucked. The room had roaches. The air conditioner was so small it didn't cool down the room so we had to open the windows and one window had no screen
Review 110:The staff was nice
Review 111:Location is scary! Hotel counter is like a pawnshop with bullet proof glass and security guard. Do not mislead with the hotel pics in the website.
Review 112:Nothing!
Review 113:Staff are indifferent to every single request large or small, they don't care. After paying for a late check out I returned to my room to find it locked, when I asked at reception I was told I hadn't paid the bill or checked out properly. When I showed him the revised bill with the late check out option he grunted and asked the security guard to walk us back to our 7th floor room and release the master lock. No real attempt to apologise or explain why this had happened.
Review 114:Large rooms, clean and comfortable beds,
Review 115:Neighborhood, out of the 2 nights stay, reception denied that they hadany available parking spot in the parking lot which caused us to leaveour suv parked on the street (broken glass pretty much all over thestreet, proof that other cars had been vandalized before - nothinghappen to our car but I couldn't sleep much just worried about it);the shower was literally falling apart, last morning I had to take ashower squatting in the tub because no water came out of the shower headso I had to use a plastic cup and collect water from the lower faucet tobe able to shower. Had I known the condition of this hotel and theneighborhood before, I would have spend an extra hundred bucks andbooked a reputable hotel instead. Me and my little kids actually came upwith a couple of made-up horror stories upon leaving the hotelreferencing our experiences and the condition of the neighborhood(zombies stories, that's the impression it left on all of us)...Listen to me... STAY AWAY
Review 116:For the first time in many years of travelling I experienced bed bugs in my bed. This has caused extreme discomfort and pain. 3 days later the swellings still cause pain and have turned into blisters. We told the management about this problem, so perhaps they have dealt with it. Let's hope so!
Review 117:Large room.
Review 118:My car was broken into and my luggage was stolen at night right in front of this hotel. Very bad neighborhood to stay at so travellers should be beware. also smoke detector was beeping in my room I told the staff several times until they changed my room.
Review 119:The late night guards who worked when you came in from a party about 3am and had to park your car in the hotels facility. They had attitudes as if they didnt want to open the garage for you. They werent very courteous. Also it wasnt quite summer and the room needed some heat but they failed to turn that on when the front desk was called. Also a phone would be nice in the room to call the front desk. Had to do that from personal cell phone
Review 120:Cheap and the room was clean, shower was good. The first security guard was very pleasant, well spoken young man, the best they had for the business
Review 121:The building was quite old and the area didn't look like the safest bit of town. I wouldn't stay there for more than a night and especially if money and closeness to the airport are not important
Review 122:It was very close to the airport and thus convenient for me as my flight had gotten cancelled and I wanted a few hour sleep on a bed before my early flight next day. The staff were quite helpful.
Review 123:When the police see crime here, they run- the other way. And return when some one is good and cold. Newark calls it "community policing"
Review 124:Wait in the Hotel Entry for an hour or two, and you can spot muggings, drug deals gone bad, shootings. Within 4 hours, guaranteed, one of each. Situated only a few blocks from a police station too.
Review 125:The bed was on wheels and it moved every time I lay on it and leaned against the wall.
Review 126:The location made it easy to get to downtown by bus (or on foot)
Review 127:Very noisy neighborhood. Extremely old and smelly hotel. Room is poor condition. Staff makes you feel they are doing a favor in you. Paid parking is a pain because every time you want to park or go out the security has to open the gate manually. Time consuming process. Avoid the neighborhood parking, it isn't safe. You only see shattered glass everywhere. Not a pleasant experience and will not recommended.
Review 128:Budget friendly and average fitness center.
Review 129:Since the first step into this so-called hotel I did not feel very comfortable! It is full of drunk and drug addicted people..the room was awful..it looked like a kind of garage..nothing like sponsored on the web.. I have never seen such an awful room..there were even pubic hair in the sink and in the toilette, in addition to rust both in the toilette and in the sink! I would have checked out immediately, but the weather was awful, I had 3 pieces of luggage and this was the cheapest place I had found ($75)!!! This is the worse place I've ever been. It should just be closed down. It's so degrading!
Review 130:Absolutely nothing.
Review 131:Dirty and staff was disrespectful. The hotel did not look like the pictures. The wifi did not work and i had to wait three hours prior to checking in and when i dinally checked in the room wand bathroom was filthy. I was so displeased with this hotel and recommend no one stays here.
Review 132:2. wifi works in the corridor only. It doesn't work inside the room. 3. Lots of black hair in the washroom after housekeeping 4. Some people made a noise at 2:30 am 5. No phone in the room 6. Janitor came to my room at 7:00am opening the door by herself. 7. When we came back by evening all my stuff was gone. They returned our belongings to us int he plastic bag.
Review 133:2 rooms, soft beds
Review 134:The fact that the room was not an accurate representation of the pictures. The walls were cracked. I kept looking for the mice. and this old hotel has a smell it also needs to be scrapped for the peeling paint on the walls.
Review 135:The internet
Review 136:Not clean Very smelly No space for parking Staff was some what helpful No AC I was over charged
Review 137:Yes don't expect 3 star in that hotel, that was more like the worst place I ever been The building is falling apart, the smell was terrible. If you go there make sure you open the windows 3-4 hours before sleeping time. Also make sure that you don't get charged by the hotel bcs they over charged me Alo good luck for parking, I stayed and I was not able to park my car there Plus make sure you get your own shampoo bcs there was none at the hotel, the soups were 2 small tiny bars and the towels were not as clean as you expect No air conditioning, the wi-fi sometimes works And the last but not least, make sure you go as early as possible bcs regardless that you reserve the room and pay for it, you may be left with out it, I witnessed these when I arrived at the so called "hotel" two couples couldn't get their room
Review 138:It was not too hot so I did not have to use the AC which I found a little loud.
Review 139:Although I arrive late in the hotel, I was able to check-in in my room very quickly.
