Reviews for The Monarch

Review 1:The breakfast was limited and only available until 8am. The cost is because of the location but room was simple and only a fridge and microwave away from being a motel 6.

Review 2:Quiet, plenty of parking while we were there new years weekend and conveniently located downtown walking distance to everything

Review 3:I attempted to check out early by one day but was not accommodated. During dinner time an unpleasant odor came from the back office (managers residence ?). Manager was difficult to understand.

Review 4:Proximity to my visit.

Review 5:mold in bathroom around shower, small rooms, TV cumbersome to operate, Buffet Breakfast lacking in food and quality, noise level from floor above high, exhaust vent dirty.

Review 6:Location was good

Review 7:1. room is very small. 2. room floor plan is awkward and not fully utility the space. 3. TV with Direct TV is very hard to operate. First time in my life need to ask hotel ppl to show me on how to use. 4. not enough wall outlet 5. building got 4 floors, not very easy to access, a lot stair and elevator wait. 6. room interior color and decoration is a bit off/unmatched 7. Hotel ppl didn't provide extra towel and room key. 8. shower water is not strong and hard to shutoff (dripping). and its drain hole can't be close so no bath. 9. furniture and room is quite old despite try to renovated on the surface

Review 8:1. refrigrator and microwave is included

Review 9:Staff were a little hard to understand, didn't seem to have a strong grasp of the English language. There was some confusion/issue, with us using a debit card - but we didn't really understand what he was talking about.

Review 10:Nice room, spacious, tidy and clean etc. Walking distance to everything (hard not to be in Mariposa, though).

Review 11:The breakfast was very paltry. At least the coffee wasn't bad.

Review 12:The room was large and comfortable with its amenities. We felt safe being in this hotel building as opposed to being in a motel room.

Review 13:The breakfast was a joke. A few donuts and cereal. On the arrival the administrator told us that the reception is only open until 10pm. If we had arrived after 10pm we wouldn't have been able to check-in even though the hotel was prepaid.

Review 14:The bed was good for one-night stay.

Review 15:Awkward beakfast room set up with meager selections, and breakfast hours that seem more geared to staffing's needs than guests needs. One morning we had to forego breakfast because there was no seating for all guests and everyone seemed to be scrambling to get something before it closed. We went next door to the cute bakery with fresh coffee and pastries instead. Lastly, while I'm sure it's a budgetary matter, I wish there were alternatives to so much use of non-recyclables like plastic utensils and styrofoam cups, especially in light of the setting near wonderful nature and Yosemite.

Review 16:Lovely young lady front desk staff at check in was very warm, welcoming and helpful. Good sized room and convenient setting close to outdoor areas for our dogs, and we requested a room away from other guests without dogs in consideration of the other guests.

Review 17:No hot water on the bathroom sink, only in shower. Staff was confused about our departure date. Tried to kick us out by 11am one morning not realizing that we had booked for two nights. But problem could be resolved quickly. Breakfast is included, but very poor.

Review 18:Good location, close to Yosemite National Park. Good restaurants close by, also a supermarket. Nice room.

Review 19:no pub, restaurant, no coffee machine, nothing, overcharged for the room coffee too much, the outdoor yard is closing too quickly

Review 20:the design, comfort, location, the yard, games room

Review 21:Good location in a great town - Mariposa . History & museum are excellent as are local restaurants & hotels for meals - & nice shops for a browse- all within walking distance . Breakfast was adequate . Hot bath was great after hiking :)

Review 22:Overwhelming smell of bleach in room -- had to change rooms Missing TV remote in room; no replacement available

Review 23:Check-in staff was awesome, extremely kind and helpful Comfy mattress

Review 24:bed wasn't very comfortable. layout of hotel is odd with few signs to important amenities. Not as quiet as it should be.

Review 25:location, staff, TV selection

Review 26:a bit surprising was the breakfast , as for the price I would expect more. It was a very basic serving - bread, jam, butter, coffee , tea, milk and cornflakes . I was expecting something more (since this gets odd after 2 days).

Review 27:The location of the hotel is great. It's just right in the center , between the shopping center and the restaurants. The overall experience was that it was a quiet place for a rest in-between the hikes.

Review 28:run down and dirty. wifi only accessable at a certain location in room. Full size window, with window sill only 12 inches from floor - worried children would fall out window falling three floors to parking lot -safety concern. Thought there would be safety bar(s) - but nothing just look down three stories. Lobby had a strong fragrance of Asian spices from cooking. Breakfast - embarrassing attempt, I guess so they they can market that they have a breakfast included.

Review 29:location in town.

Review 30:The hotel was very clean and cheerful, the room was real comfortable and clean The location was great, Close to the west location for Yosetime. Staff was very friendly and helpful

Review 31:The breakfast was poor. Vending machine coffee and a broken toaster didn't add to the poor night's sleep.

Review 32:It was a stop over on the way to somewhere else. From this perspective it was fine

Review 33:Breakfast is a joke, it's an insult to beakfast. wifi works some times and the pool was filthy, a cloudy soup of sweat, urine, and feces

Review 34:Just the location

Review 35:The room was not clean; the bedspread was soiled. The bathroom sink was clogged and drained very slowly. Mildew was growing around the caulking of the tub. Mildew was on the bottom of the little tray next to he sink that held the soap and shampoo. One day, housekeeping did not even clean the room to take out the trash or give fresh towels. The towels were stained and very thin and cheap. Only two towels were given for a room with two queen beds; should be at least 4 towels standard. The carpet was dirty and not even vacuumed . The breakfast was a joke and should not even be called breakfast; no fresh fruit or yogurt. All they provided was bread, a toaster, coffee and two choices of cerel with milk. No oatmeal or any other hot food. I would have left this hotel right away except every other place was booked for the time I was staying. I stayed for 4 nights. I've stayed in a lot of hotels when I travel and this hotel by far has been the worst for the money. They are 1 diamond rated from AAA, but should not even have a single diamond. This hotel is worth half the stated rate for this hotel given these problems.

Review 36:Location right on the main street within walking distance of restaurants. Ease of parking.

Review 37:The price. Extremely expensive for a very average hotel. Stained towels were given twice.

Review 38:The location of mariposa was convenient for visiting Yosemite. Mariposa was a surprisingly pretty little town with nice restaurants. The beds were clean and comfortable.

Review 39:Very small, dark and dreary-looking room with old carpeting and bathroom fixtures; couldn't get WIFI from our room---had to go upstairs to the lobby; disappointing continental breakfast. For the price we paid, the accommodations were very disappointing.

Review 40:The staff was friendly and helpful and directed us to a great place for dinner.

Review 41:Rather pricey for being a dated place that had only very basic furnishings and a very meager "breakfast". Bathroom floor needs closer attention. It calls itself a "boutique" hotel but it was more like a Motel 6.

Review 42:Good location, nice exterior appearance, friendly staff at front desk

Review 43:-Thin walls, lots of ambient noise -room furnishings reminded me of a Motel 6, not what I expected to find in a so called "boutique" motel. -definitely not worth the $180/night I payed

Review 44:Location

Review 45:did not clean room took our ac unit out while we were out and replace it with one that didn't work. ac units did not air filters and evap. coils were stopped up so there is maint. program

Review 46:location and young lady at desk was fantastic

Review 47:Usually, as in this case, the hotel prices in California are too high for the correspondent facilities!

Review 48:Hotel at the main street (actually road) in the city of Mariposa, near everything!

Review 49:The breakfast area is way too small, I had to step outside to change my mind. Might help to utilize the lobby a little better

Review 50:Good location, nice rooms

Review 51:Based on outside presentation and stylised photos on website I anticipated something a little more modern and appealing in room presentation. TV didn't work in the first room and had to move to another room.

Review 52:It was clean and tidy. Appreciated recommendation to local resturant with a free desert voucher.

Review 53:Staff were not pleasant the day we were leaving. Kept reminding us of our checkout time. "Continental breakfast" was barely anything. Carpets were dingy looking.

Review 54:Location is nice to downtown. 45 minutes from Yosemite Park.

Review 55:Room smelled Funny, A/C also smelled weird when you first turn it on, wifi is hard to connect to even after following instructions, breakfast is small,

Review 56:I liked that the monarch had Cold A/C, free wifi, cable TV, fridge, microwave, staff is nice and friendly .

Review 57:This is an old motel that provides the basics only when one makes a last minute reservation as I did to go to Yosemite N P. It is a long drive to the park and over priced. Next time I will plan better.

Review 58:Refrigerator was opposite bathroom door, could not open door all the way. Front desk could not.answer questions about TV remote. New owners making improvents, front not.finished.

Review 59:If presented with other options, I might look elsewhere for a more charming place. The room smelled a bit smoky, and the breakfast options were really limited. However, this was totally fine as a place for sleepy travelers to pas out before a day in the park. All in all, would definitely go back in a pinch.

Review 60:We were able to book a fairly last-minute stay for Memorial Day weekend. The hotel was comfortable and reasonably close to the park (about 40 minutes from the entrance). The diner across the street is delightful!

Review 61:Staff friendly, like family Room was clean, very comfortable bed, quiet, window view of wooded mountain, in-room coffee, frig, microwave. Location one hour beautiful drive from Yosemite Valley. Price less than half of the cheapest Yosemite venues.

Review 62:There was a lot of noise in the pipes from showers, toilets flushing and running water from other units.

Review 63:We stayed in a handicap room and it was nice and roomy. We didn't need to climb any stairs.

Review 64:bed is not clean, felt itch when sleeping. front desk is not friendly. breakfast is bad, toast and coffee only. too far away from Yosemite west gate, about 70km/1 hour drive.

Review 65:nothing

Review 66:it is about 70 km/1 hour from Yosemite west gate, it is too far to go back and forth. The breakfast is really bad, toast, and coffee only. The room is not so clean, felt itch when sleeping. The front desk is a Indian couple, the attitude is bad.

Review 67:It seems that the owner of this hotel is a couple of Indian, very infriendly to us, I mean, Chinese people. Besides, low telephone signal in the room and slow wifi. I don't think I would recommend this hotel to anybody. 店主是印度一家,对中国人十分不友好,老太太脾气很怪,手机和WiFi信号都很差,强烈不推荐这家入住。

Review 68:Comfortable bed

Review 69:The parking lot is down a hill on the side of the building. If you enter from the parking lot, the lobby is on the third floor. It would be nice if they had signs to tell people that.

Review 70:Very nice room. The bed was comfortable.

Review 71:Checked in air didn't work... Asked us if we wanted a dam fan ! Really... At two hundred a night , your asking if we want a fan?.. Back door left unlocked, poor breakfast .. Asked for late check out... Woman at desk says 20 more an hour for late check out... Place was a joke... Don't do it ...

Review 72:The Breakfast!!!!!! We want steak and eggs. No just kidding. the breakfast could use some improvement.

Review 73:the room was great and every night after work, getting in at 11:00pm my room was always clean and the staff were very nice.

Review 74:Staff (owners) did not seem to be very friendly or happy to have guests. Breakfast had very limited options: some pastries, milk and cereal - which was not ideal as we eat no dairy or gluten. The worst part was that we stayed in the room overlooking the main road - very noisy in the morning ! The hotel did not seem to be full (with a few cars in the car park), but we were not given a choice anyway.

Review 75:We liked the close vicinity of the town, restaurants nearby.

Review 76:Neither the fridge nor the dish TV were plugged in when we arrived. The dish TV took 15 minutes to boot up. There were no bath towels in the room when we arrived, so we had to go back up to lobby to get them. Worst of all was the shower temp control. It would vary wildly from freezing cold to scalding hot. I honestly can't think of another time in my life when I was just downright mad getting out of the shower. Are negative ratings possible? I give this place -5. Grrr.

Review 77:Nice hotel with reasonable price, which is located very close to Yosemite Nationalpark. The room was clean and nicely furnished with microwave, fridge and freezer. In contrast to many other hotels in this category, the windows were very large and thus the room appeared very bright and friendly. The hotel offered on-site parking behind the hotel and an acceptable breakfast.

Review 78:The bed needs upgraded and I lost money in the soda machine. Never got a soda or refund.

Review 79:The location is close to Yosemite and the free breakfast is good, so we could get going early.

Review 80:green pool, electric plugs not working, hvac not working properly, looks new from outside but inside is cheap renovation with glaring repairs still needed

Review 81:Room dirty (old food in micro wave) and crisp packets in room. Manager sniffed all the time, helped himself to breakfast which he then took back to his room....

Review 82:The bed was comfortable and the hotel was near two good restaurants.

Review 83:The breakfast was minimal. The building seemed unfinished.

Review 84:The location was good for day trips into the park. The staff was friendly. The room soundproofing seemed good.

Review 85:breakfast did not raise at the same standards as Monarch itself. We walked to the cafe next door and had some wonderful omlettes.

Review 86:i was pleasantly surprised. The Monarch was cheaper then Best Western, but very clean, with no typical motel smell I the air. We were a group of 8 and used the beds and showers without any reservation. Definitely a place I will return to in the future.

Review 87:Breakfast was very basic and you have a small area in the reception area to eat.

Review 88:Situated in a nice quaint small town. Plenty of parking on a sloping site but there is a lift to reception area and all floors. Staff friendly and gave info. On weather conditions in the park and where to hire chains if needed

Review 89:Breakfast is worthless.very bad.pool is dirty.tv stand is very low. You can't watch it if you are in bed. Bed cover is not cleaned

Review 90:Very friendly staff.good size room

Review 91:No security at the exterior doors. They opened without using a room card. The microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator didn't work because of a broken outlet. One lamp was coming apart, one was unplugged. The breakfast was skimpy and no employee was there to welcome the guests. The sheets looked "previously used."

Review 92:The price was good for the area.

Review 93:Staff was OK but not very helpful. Lacks a bit of character.

Review 94:Mariposa is a nice little town to reach Yosemite Park and the hotel has a good location to reach local eateries and supermarkets. Breakfast was good comparing to most of hotels in California.

Review 95:Cold cereal and toast the only breakfast. Location worked for us but not much going on on this small town

Review 96:Location worked for us. Lobby bright and clean. Room older average

Review 97:Stealing cable so very weird set up for very old TV with worst color problems n couldn't get it to turn off. TV Real difficult and don't work. Old TV's n Mattresses. Horrible beds. Hardly slept an was so tired after nite in this lousy hotel. Lets you have a pet in basement level but are afraid of them. Looks good from outside but Kinda like a prison might be but with nice Ivy in lobby.

Review 98:Limited light available in the selected room due to a wall directly outside but not an issue as were out for most of the day. Wall sockets were very insecure, although have noticed this in a few US hotels.

Review 99:Free wifi. Complimentary Breakfast. Clean and tidy rooms. Good value and location.

Review 100:Breakfast is corn flakes and toast, no fruit or anything else. Not anything we would eat. Internet is very slow.

Review 101:location is great. Found a wonderful health food store/restaurant within walking distance that was great. Only about an hour from Yosemite, and an easy drive.

Review 102:There was a complimentary breakfast but it was very very basic and of relatively low quality. Also, I had booked a queen room for 3 people but we only had two sets of towels. Had to get third set at reception on both days of our stay.

Review 103:Large comfortable room, friendly staff.

Review 104:(1) I had to argue with the desk personnel to be given a receipt after presenting my credit card at check-in, whereby California state law requires every business to OFFER a RECEIPT. (2) I had to request a different room because the room had a view of: a wall; a huge old Propane cylinder; ladders; workmen's supplies and old window frames. (3) The toilet leaked ALL NIGHT LONG and kept us awake ALL NIGHTLONG. SUMMARY: The operators of the hotel re terrible.

Review 105:I like leaving the premises; we will never return.

Review 106:What I didn't like was the free wifi because it didn't work. And the breakfast was okay.

Review 107:I likes the location and I also liked the hotel.Plus the serves was great. :)

Review 108:some people might find it dated maybe? But if you look at the pics and think it looks alright I doubt you'd be disappointed. Kinda wish I was still there!

Review 109:mariposa is a charming little town, my favourite on our california road trip! Even if you don't choose this hotel choose this locations! It's close enough to Yosemite to make the trip each day easy, and close enough to have a great mountain town feel, but there's also You are walking distance to loads of nice places to eat and the town is clean and peaceful ! Really I highly recommend it as a place to see Yosemite from It's about 45 mins to yosemite valley or to South gate we did one each day of our trip and the drive was stunning in either direction The nice owners upgraded our room to a bigger one when they saw we had a baby and gave us advice on what to see in yosemite. Lucky for us in late March is was like mid summer hot as you could want and sunny. Glacier road was open so we drove to the look out point! Fantastic, it's so high!!! Out of this world experience. The hotel is basic and a little dated but clean and comfortable. The bed was great and pillows nice. Warm enough for us without heating on with 50 farenhight nights. Tv and fridge and nice breakfast, noting special but decent ceriel toasts and pastries. Only paid 60 dollars a night so I was chuffed ! Great deal for the money. Would recommend.

Review 110:The pool was filthy - clearly in "off-season" condition, which was too bad - we had very much intended to use the pool when there. Signs around the building/elevator said snacks and soda on 2nd floor; machines were everywhere except the 2nd floor. Wi-fi was out for the evening/night we arrived, although they did have it working in the morning. No towels in the room; had to get them from the desk.

Review 111:Good location and convenient to my overall trip; decently priced. Liked the microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker in the room, even though we didn't use them - it was nice to have the option.

Review 112:There were a few instances of dropped wifi and bad connection.

Review 113:A room at the right value in the heart of Mariposa. An hour from Yosemite Valley and within walking distance of shops and restaurants.

Review 114:Wifi not to hot, worked better in reception area.

Review 115:Good price, comfortable and very friendly had a couple of issues but nothing that was not taken care of.

Review 116:the breakfast is a bit basic.

Review 117:we went to Mariposa for its proximity to the Yosemite park! it is maybe, 45 minutes from it! if you would like to see a nice peculiar small town, this one you shouldn't miss. the hotel was really nice! the room and toilet were very clean and comfortable. The bed is absolutely amazing! sooo comfortable, that to wake up in the morning is difficult. wi-fi connection was alright and the parking lot for the cars is just at the rear of the hotel. the staff is helpfull and smiley. we liked a lot this hotel, and we do recommend it!

Review 118:Very very unfriendly staff would not move or come to the room to helpwith the key when I wasn't able to enter because they forgot that Iwas staying longer than one day ,police at the properties tow out offour nights, loud music, parties ,homeless looking through the trashcan,at breakfast of very very unfriendly and no WiFI. Staff will not callthe company they wanted us to call it to get Wi-Fi.

Review 119:Price was right. The children also enjoyed the waffles.

Review 120:Although there was a wifi signal in our room, the verification page would not load on my Android smart phone. It was ok with my husband´s iPhone using Safari. The phone in the room had no dial tone, and the shower was constantly dripping. We mentioned this to the manager and he blew us off. We also tried to let him know that another guest had the light on in their car, but he didn´t bother to write down the vehicle information and just waved us away. The electrical outlet for the microwave didn´t work.

Review 121:The hotel and room were clean. It was pretty quiet and located about 30 minutes from the Yosemite park entrance.

Review 122:I could not find any thing I didn't like.

Review 123:This place was a great place to stay. Staff was helpful with directions. The rooms were very clean. I enjoyed my visit. Free WIFi was great.

Review 124:May be the room interior can have a bit of update.

Review 125:Very friendly staff and helpful. Great location with lots of restaurants and supermarket in the close vicinity. Relatively close to the park entrances (1 hour drive). Good value for money.

Review 126:That I didn't stay there another night was great value for money

Review 127:The bed, style, room, staff. Location was good as any as the town is small, located near Yosemite park which is mainly why people stayed here. Breakfast was nice, no there wasn't anything cooked etc but it's a small place, lots of cereal, bread, pastrys, juice and waffles!!

Review 128:The only nit pick I have is the breakfast hours. Breakfast is only served between 7:00 and 9:00 AM. If you want to get into the park before the masses you should be on the road well before 7:00.

Review 129:Staff was very friendly. Gave me map of town and directions to the different locations I needed to visit. You will not find a cleaner hotel/motel room at anypprice or location. Room was spotless! Bed was very comfortable. I slept like a log! This is a great place to stay for your visit to Yosemite. For the price of one night at the Ahwahnee Hotel you can stay for an entire week here. How much time do you really spend in your room when visiting a national park? You will also have your choice of dozens of places to eat at significantly lower prices than inside the park. The drive to the park is about an hour to the valley floor. It is such a beautiful drive that it will go by in a flash. I will definitely be back to stay at the Monarch!

Review 130:Bathroom light really loud. Unfriendly Indian staff. Ultra small and minimal room (only one chair, no place to sit or place our stuff). Close to nothing breakfast.

Review 131:Location is good. WiFi works.

Review 132:Breakfast nicely arranged with waffle maker, and other choices, juice. Staff is extremely friendly. Parked in front of the hotel, and got a room on the first floor off lobby after requesting a room with no stairs. Room was small, no refrigerator, but very clean and comfortable beds. A great deal for the price!

Review 133:It is a pity because this hotel has nice staff and a good location, but the conditions are not good. Its is cheap compared to other hotels nearby, but I wouldn't stay again. The towels and bed linens were dirty (had lots of stains and hairs) the carpet was dusty, and the bathroom looked very old (the bath curtain was very dirty). The hotel needs some renovations but mainly improve the cleaning. Its ok for one night if you can't find anything else, but don't expect a good night sleep.

Review 134:The location very close to Yosemite Park and Mariposa, the silence and the staff.

Review 135:My bed had something in. I have bites that itch all over my arms. The coffee machine had green stuff and little flies in it. Very dirty below the beds. All seemed to be old and very used, but had that former good touch from Best Western. The stuff was nice to help out on Thanksgiving, but at checking out the women behind the counter seemed to be more concerned with her cleaning stuff than with me.

Review 136:Location good. Outside looks nice, but the inside was not. It seems to be an old Best Western. Too expensive for what you get.

Review 137:The room is not clean, and the fan in the bathroom is so loud. Amazingly, the pillow cover is dirty, as you can see on one side there is a clear mark of usage, the bed also has a strong smell of food -- like indian food smell. I would not stay here another time. Again the bed, on the left side, the bed is clearly overused, and you can feel the spring under your back; on the right side of the bed, it feels better. I guess this is because it is near the wall -- very few people likes to sleep there, and this saved the other half side of the bed. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel.

Review 138:it is in the town of mariposa, in which you can easily access some stores, and some restaurants.
