Reviews for Casa Mariquita Hotel

Review 1:The sink in the bathroom clogged up. We reported it , but it wasn't fixed a few hours later when re returned. They gave us another room on the third floor and up additional stairs. Many older people have trouble going down stairs.

Review 2:The location of the hotel was ideal. The staff was polite.

Review 3:Museum construction next door. (But when it is completed the new museum will be an a great asset for Avalon.)

Review 4:Clean, quiet and a friendly staff. Enjoyed the roof top patio even in winter!

Review 5:The room was very small. There were not enough electrical outlets to charge our phones. It was very noisy outside and from neighbors and we did not get restful sleep. The breakfast foods were of cheap and poor quality.

Review 6:The front office responded expeditiously when the toilet clogged and overflowed

Review 7:The only thing i didn't like was that the shower water was freezing cold, maybe because we were at the very top?? It was not the most pleasant feeling especially in cold weather.

Review 8:i loved the view and location of this hotel. Staff was also very helpful.

Review 9:The building is VERY loud, we were awake all night listening to people flush toilets and walk around. There was no view and the room was dark and cramped, unlike how the photos appeared.

Review 10:The staff! They were extra friendly and helpful. All smiles :)

Review 11:Close walking distance to VONS, the beach and all the shops. Pretty Spanish style hotel with friendly staff. Ended up staying another night because we didn't want to leave! Beds were comfy, bathtub was spotless, cool patio views to have coffee/wine on. Would stay there again!

Review 12:No bad experience at all.

Review 13:Location was good, that bed was really comfortable! We had to take luggage up one flight of stairs but a little exercise won't hurt. The continental breakfast was nice.

Review 14:First off,...this facility does not have an elevator so you have to carry your luggage up several flights of stairs in order to get to your room. The rooms are older and are ready for updating. The main reason that I have to leave neutral feedback is that I mistakenly left a piece of jewelry on the nightstand. Upon my return, the jewelry was gone. This was so disappointing to me. I informed the front desk of the incident and was told they would get back with me.

Review 15:The location was centrally located and steps away from the main street. The continental breakfast was light to moderate. There is a stunning view of the city from the upper patio. Front desk staff was very accommodating.

Review 16:The room was very clean and well appointed. The bed was obviously newer....very comfortable! Bathroom was very clean and updated - overall the hotel was incredibly well cared for, clean and comfortable!

Review 17:Breakfast hours didn't open until 8am. Then closed office at 6pm. Would Like Open By 6am. and close about 10pm so could use microwave for warming rice sock for sleeping.

Review 18:Design was great.

Review 19:Room large with a refrigerator, and dressers with drawers was convenient. Continental breakfast very satisfactory for a continental. Good location. Very glad to have air conditioner because this was an unusually hot October.

Review 20:The exterior of the hotel scared me a little at first, since it looked a little run down at first glance. I also thought that for the price, we would have access to a good breakfast (instead of just coffee and oatmeal), more facilities and a bigger room. We were also disappointed with the "balcony" on the 3rd floor- right next to our room. We went to go enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sunset over the ocean until we realized that the walls surrounding the balcony are about 1-2 feet too high, making it impossible to see anything outside when sitting down. Disappointing!

Review 21:I liked the room the most, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean.

Review 22:This in NO WAY reflects on the hotel, but wheelchair users beware...This hotel is up a hill so keep that in mind if you are in a push wheelchair. My husbands was electric. The major problem was with the city of Avalon as there was NOT wheelchair accessibility from the curb to the side walk to get into the hotel. Thankfully the hotel staff helped us with lifting the wheelchair onto the side walk or onto the street each day of our stay. Hopefully that problem will be rectified once the museum construction is completed.

Review 23:I like that you could pay a minimal fee ($20.00) to check in early (if the room is available and ours was). Our boat arrived in Catalina at 7:30am so the early check in feature was a big plus! The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have beach towels to use on the beach saving suitcase room of bringing your own. The continental breakfast wasn't gourmet by any means...but a nice touch and just enough for what a breakfast should be. They had oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, pastries, muffins, bananas, coffee and orange juice. Our room was a handicap accessible room (which is hard to find a room in Catalina without stairs) so that was a huge plus for my husband! We would stay here again.

Review 24:Didn't like the climb to our room but we knew before we went.

Review 25:The location was great. We saw ere on the top floor (4). We found the back door to go out rather than stairs. Breakfast was good.

Review 26:Built on the side of a hill there are no elevators to bring you to your floor.

Review 27:The people are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and it had air conditioning!

Review 28:I would like to have a more complete breakfast. We ate at a local restaurant for b-fast.

Review 29:I enjoyed the location. It was a short walk to the pier, yet quiet in the evening when you want to sleep. Will be staying there for the next trip to catalina!

Review 30:Staff was very friendly and the hotel centrally located. We were able to store our luggage before check-in and after check-out, making it easy to enjoy 2 full days in Avalon.

Review 31:I got an email to call for "concierge" services. When I called, the girl was rude and not helpful at all. I had never been to the island, so I was asking her what there is to do, and she kept responding by asking me what I want to do. How am I supposed to know that if I've never been there?

Review 32:Comfortable and clean rooms with good location.

Review 33:Staff was friendly and helpful. Accommodated my health problem with changing to handicapped room, which was perfect across from the lobby. Great coffee. Great continental breakfast.

Review 34:Need more tables to eat outside during breakfast since there are no tables in the breakfast room. Only one table with shade on level 3.

Review 35:Very clean hotel. Value for money. Very comfortable bed with extra pillows in cupboard.

Review 36:No elevator, no double sinks in master king room, but would still stay here again because all else was great.

Review 37:Great location &:staff. Nice contact brkfast.very nice room, great bed, clean, terrace patios.

Review 38:Very small room. Smelled wet and like someone had smoked in the room. Stopper in sink didn't work and when toilet was flushed it made a horrible noise. I called mgtmt at 10:39 pm because the people above us were making so much noise. After they were alerted to stop by mgmnt, for a few minutes they got even louder. We lost 2 hours of sleep because of it. Had to wash everything packed to get the smell of the room out. Opened luggage and put outside in the sun to rid it of smell in room.

Review 39:In room#1 Move the air-conditioner to a window that is not at the head of the bed. Having it blowing air and noise at your head all night is not a treat.

Review 40:The location was stellar! Walking to the beach, the grocery store and to eat. The staff was wonderful!

Review 41:The hotel seemed very new. The room was a good size and very clean. It was nice to have a refrigerator in the room. I also liked that it was near everything, but not on the main street so it was quieter.

Review 42:The room is cooled by a "swamp cooler" that leaves everything damp - really, really damp. TV is mounted on a side wall which is kind of weird.

Review 43:Locked closet to keep bags in before and after check out was helpful.

Review 44:Our stay came with free breakfast that was served in the lobby. The actual situation is that the lobby has a little alcove with a shelf that holds coffee pot, apples, bananas, hard boiled eggs, pastries, and packaged oatmeal. There is no room to stand or even sit down, so we ended up taking our breakfast upstairs. The selection of food was poor, especially when you take the price of stay into consideration. There is construction going on right next to the hotel, so your view is not as picturesque as you might expect. No wifi.

Review 45:There are several patios in the hotel where one can sit and enjoy fresh air. I was glad that we were able to keep our luggage in the hotel free of charge after we checked out, since we had few more hours in Avalon before departure. Staff was friendly, and the location of the hotel is convenient. It will be even better once the museum they are building next door is finished.

Review 46:The help was very friendly. Hotel was nice to store our luggage before and after our stay for a few hours.hotel had a good location was clean and very quiet.

Review 47:Only wish there was an elevator. Had foot surgeries so it was a bit tough for me with luggage.

Review 48:Staff very pleasant and helpful. Check in very easy. Room very clean and comfortable. Continental breakfast was nice. Definitely will stay there in future visits.

Review 49:Wifi was iffy. The managers, who were very helpful, worked diligently toget us online.

Review 50:The tiled walkways and the landscaping in them made for a restful, pleasing atmosphere. Great staff. Breakfast was not elaborate, butnutritious.

Review 51:continental breakfast, limited to muffins, oatmeal, coffee available only 8am-10am. no coffee pot in room.

Review 52:great staff, cute room, clean. refridgerator, no coffee pot in room.

Review 53:Breakfast was pitiful, especially considering the cost of the room! Need fruit besides banana! What about real milk for the instant oatmeal and coffee? And a dry cereal option?

Review 54:Friendly and helpful staff; Pleasant Mediterranean architecture and layout; outside patios for sitting/eating.

Review 55:The paper thin walls. There was a courtyard by our room. When people were hanging out there it was like they were right in our room. The construction going on didn't help my slumber either.

Review 56:The location was walking distance to everything. I also liked all the tropical plants that adorned the hotel. We had a good view of Avalon from our room.

Review 57:The bed wasn't the most comfortable thing ever but that's pretty much the only thing I could complain about.

Review 58:It was clean. The staff was friendly and very helpful. They offered beach towels and other small helpful things. It was the cheapest hotel I found listed and it was great at being a place to sleep.

Review 59:Some of the younger check-in staff could have been more welcoming.

Review 60:Room nicely appointed and serviced well by cleaning staff. Lovely outdoor walkway up through the hillside establishment. Close to the center of town, but away from the business of the promenade. (Also soon to be next door to the island museum now being constructed)

Review 61:The only two things was there is no elevator, prepare to walk up the stairs. The other thing, only window is to the hallway. Not sure what it would take to get one of the front rooms with a little bit of a view! ;)

Review 62:Although the place was built many years ago, they have tried very well keeping it up and we were able to enjoy our stay in Catalina.

Review 63:We did not like the stairs because we are 70+ in age. but thank-you for the help given.

Review 64:We liked the view from the 4th floor. I requested a coffee pot for early morning coffee cup of coffee. to me it was a big plus. We are early risers. So peaceful and quite was very nice ....

Review 65:The rooms are very stuffy with no ventilation, if the air conditioning is not kept on all the time, gets too hot. The sink was so pretty in our room, but very difficult to wash hands & face, the faucet is too short to get a good flow of water. And the place is so charming :), just needed a coat of fresh paint.

Review 66:The very friendly staff, front desk always very helpful and gave assistance when needed. The maid service was excellent as well. Rooms was very clean.

Review 67:Very close to all the restaurants, bars, water, shops, activities, etcetera. friendly staff, clean, perfect. I love the front and rear balconies overlooking the water.

Review 68:4 flights of stars, elderly persons no elevator should have told us before booking! pics of room wide angle lens, rooms very small.

Review 69:rooms were very clean, good view.

Review 70:The hotel has no elevator and three flights of stairs with luggage was problematic. There is no luggage cart or assistance provided.

Review 71:The room was very clean, the beds comfortable, and the towels were clean and fluffy. Management was very concerned about their guests' experience and provided a bottle of champagne after an issue with housekeeping.

Review 72:Only down point was the breakfast was not much and was not open when I needed it at 7:30 am.

Review 73:Great experience. Friendly staff, clean hotel, comfortable beds.

Review 74:While we did not use the TV, it was mounted on the wall on the side of the beds given the room layout. It would have been awkward to watch TV from the bed because you would have to turn your head to the right and up. The window to our room overlooked the cleaning supply station and was on an inside walkway so we had to keep our blinds closed.

Review 75:Great location, very clean, pleasant staff. They were great about letting us store our bags for the day.

Review 76:WiFi didn't work in our room, and outside the room the signal wasn't very strong either. Breakfast is limited, only pastries, no bread.

Review 77:Nice hotel with large and clean rooms and comfortable beds. Friendly personnel. We arrived very early on the island and we could use the hotel's luggage storage room.

Review 78:The rooms kind of open up right into the hallway - and some people kept their room doors open and you could directly see into their rooms and that was kind of interesting. Nothing bad. Overall, decent accommodations for the $$ and it's close to everything.

Review 79:The staff was very friendly - there was a lot of busy noises that I don't think the hotel can really help - people walking on the street, etc. We stayed in the pent house suite for just a little more a night - It has a pretty fantastic view and comfortable accommodations, really wish we could have stayed longer.

Review 80:Their cable channels did not work. I was looking forward to watching the season finale of The Waking Dead but AMC was not working even though it was listed.

Review 81:The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff were very friendly and they let us store our luggage in the lobby until our room was ready. They also let us store our luggage after check out since our boat didn't leave until 7pm, way after check out time.

Review 82:Dead bolt fell off door. They never provided Wi-Fi info. Bag storage on check-in was just leave it in the lobby although we were offered a closet on checking out. The breakfast was anything but.

Review 83:The stairs are a little rough carrying luggage up to the 3rd floor. The worst part about it was the water saver shower head. It was a little extreme. Stayed in twice as long trying to get the shampoo out of my hair. They would be better off putting in a Water saver that actually puts out a usable stream of water. It is a little uphill climb to get there if walking.

Review 84:The decor was just my style. Very cozy. Beautiful view and convenient location.

Review 85:To bad it doesn't have elevator not a deal breaker.

Review 86:It was quite and off the main road. The patio was great. It reminded me of the small town in Europe. The staff was very helpful. I will go back.

Review 87:Pillows - wood planks. Maids used breezeway as temporary storage during the until they were finished with shift.

Review 88:Location is a couple of block off the main strip - "invaluable" if you want a quiet stay. Room was comfortable, bed slept well.

Review 89:Wifi didn't connect well on the 3rd floor even with the password. The vending machines were out of order. It is uphill a bit, so walking back and forth could get tiring after a couple days.

Review 90:The rooms were large and the furniture/décor was very elegant. It was a beautiful birthday escape. The bed was very comfortable and we didn't want to leave. Conveniently located next to vons, which was open later in the evening.

Review 91:While the exteriors of the hotel were pretty and quaint, the room itself was a bit small and pretty basic, though pleasant.

Review 92:Staff was extremely friendly and helpful! They stowed our bags when we arrived in the morning so we could bop around town until check-in. They also stowed our bags the next day after check-out since our boat didn't leave until 5:15pm - at no charge! That was much appreciated. Also the mini fridge in the room came in handy, and the sound of the fan all night ensured a great night's sleep. We were 2nd floor end unit facing the street, but found that it was a very quiet street and room location!

Review 93:The only Microwave was in the office. Had demolition crew working right next door building a museum, but we were out during their working hours.

Review 94:Staff was friendly and communicative. Had baggage storage for incoming guests and held onto our baggage til we were ready to leave. Vons just a few steps away.

Review 95:I wish there was a elevator, but I knew there was not a elevator when I booked it. Gave me a great workout :)

Review 96:We went for the annual jazzfest on the island. This hotel was located a easy walk away (down hill) from the casino. The room was very nice, but small. That wasn't a big deal because we were out and about most of the time. Nice view from our room. Cute hotel interior . A small breakfast is provided: coffee, tea, Danish, muffins, cereal, fruit, hard boil eggs and orange juice.

Review 97:- wi-fi is spotty in spots and at certain time of day (all in all pretty decent) - Heads up - no elevator. Not a problem for most guests. This is more of a heads up for those requiring a elevator or for a need to request the 1st or 2nd floor - Don't expect a big breakfast. True continental. Not a problem unless the expectation is for a large breakfast

Review 98:- Location - central to everything - Right up the street from a large grocery store - Close to rentals for golf carts and the main pier for activities - The Avalon Trolley stops right in front for easy access and movement for those who walking may be limited

Review 99:No elevator access, had to carry luggage to third floor room. Continental Breakfast was poor, would be better not to offer the breakfast and instead lower hotel stay a few dollars a night.

Review 100:Nice place for the money

Review 101:Casa Mariquita has a terrific location - just far enough away from the beach to be really quite and avoiding a long trek up the hill. The room was very private, spacious and had a lovely bath set up. It is an excellent value for your money. We'll be back next year!

Review 102:Had to climb up 4 flights of stairs with luggage in tow. Was not prepared for that. Also, the breakfast was sparse and we had to wait for coffee every time. Also..did not clean our room when we were out we had to ask for service. That was a bummer.

Review 103:Very clean and very pretty hotel. Great view of the harbor and village. Loved the pillows...loved them so much I am trying to find them to purchase for my home.

Review 104:rooms small and old. bathroom fan loud and in need of replacement. shower knobs old and hard to control. shower head either blasting or dribbling. continental breakfast pathetic. really just coffee. can't recommend for $200/night.

Review 105:bed was comfortable.

Review 106:Should spray wash the grounds, really dirty.

Review 107:The staff were so welcoming and helpful if we had questions. The furniture was beautiful which made it so nice.

Review 108:The sharp incline, the last half block to walk to the hotel .....very hard on knees, especially after shopping and walking on beachfront area on the Bay.Tile floor grout in vanity area very dark stained in places.

Review 109:Style of Hotel .... comfortable bed ... Reminds me of my favorite hotels in Mexico. Air Conditioning!

Review 110:Nothing.

Review 111:Everything. Nice quaint hotel with a great view. A microwave would have been nice, but I really enjoyed my stay there. Would love to stay there again.

Review 112:We liked everything.

Review 113:Beautiful location. Nice views of harbor and hillside. Hotel has a tropical, open air feel. Our room was very clean and the staff was always cheerful and friendly.

Review 114:No negatives.

Review 115:I liked the room and the friendliness of the staff.I liked the idea of the breakfast on trays -possibly more variety of fruit and yogurts for breakfast.

Review 116:Facilities were wonderful. Perfect distance to the beach and the store. Breakfast was great. Mr. Lee and his crew were always helpful and friendly. Rooms were clean and comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel!

Review 117:Love the location to our destination for a wedding at Descanso Beach. Also great to have the grocery store just a block away! Beds were super comfortable too!

Review 118:The facility was dirty, paint off the walls large dents in the walls, furniture badly chipped rugs were filthy, lights were out in the room and stairs. There was no elevator service for a four story facility and this was not told or written which made it difficult for seniors who had problems or not. Shame, shame on you I would tell others of this experience and think twice before using booking.com

Review 119:nothing except the weather at this hotel

Review 120:Nothing with the hotel really. They are building a history museum next door so there is a bit of that. Not bad considering and not the hotel's fault. The construction people were the quietest I've ever observed. The island broadband is awful. Also not the hotel's fault their wifi worked fine. But everything goes out same provider who was not up to the task of 2014 resort isp.

Review 121:This was a great little hotel. Friendly and gracious. Room was nicer than I expected and was well appointed. Bed was terrific. We stayed a week so we spent some time there. Had a great time.

Review 122:The construction going on next door, noise was never an issue, just the sight and sidewalk blockage.

Review 123:Patio outside my room with a decent view. Refrigerator inside closet was nice to keep drinks in but be out of sight. Comfy bed to my liking.

Review 124:Very small but everything on Catalina is. No lift so could be a problem for someone with mobility issues. Wifi was mostly non-existent. I think they need more WAP's to ensure the signal covers the entire Hotel. Also, wifi user name and passwords (one for each device) were long and complicated. Keep it simple! We're on vacation!

Review 125:Nice little Hotel in a beautiful little town. Had a great time on Catalina. The staff were nice. Great location. Nice View.

Review 126:Noisy construction next door Very small room Lame breakfast bar Disinterested staff Wifi sucked Patio walls blocked amazing view Price too high for few amenities available Disappointed overall

Review 127:Good location Comfortable king bed

Review 128:An extra charge for my two daughters who are over 18. We had two queens which can sleep up to four people, but because they are 19 and 21 we had to spend an extra 100.00 just to have them with my husband and I for three days. They are college students and I think that should be taken into consideration. Not much extra money in our pockets with two kids in college. The only vacation we can afford is a 3-day get-a-way to Catalina. So the extra charge was a big disappointment.

Review 129:The owner was very friendly. The location was easy to access.

Review 130:Had pay $4 to "rent" 2 beach towels. Kind of tacky.

Review 131:Great location. Love the open air Spanish style layout of the hotel with relaxing patios tucked in here and there. Perfect place to enjoy the complementary continental breakfast.

Review 132:Placement of television and bed are not very conducive to comfortable viewing. Quite pricey.

Review 133:Right near the downtown area and very easy to walk to beach and restaurants

Review 134:Rather small and no drawers to put things in other than one small night stand. Also, the patios around the hotel were always being used by smokers, we could never enjoy them.

Review 135:Tastefully decorated and comfortable

Review 136:electric receptacles need to be replaced, plugs kept falling out. It was a little tight in the 2 bed room, if you accidentally turned the faucet on too much you get sprayed. other than that it was a nice quiet place.

Review 137:hotel was clean, nice, the staff was friendly, 2 blocks from the beach. They had a small continental breakfast and the price was right.
