Reviews for Hotel Atwater
Review 1:Bathroom is extremely small. Old building smell.
Review 2:Great location, walking distance from boat loading. Checked bags early, convenient. Very friendly staff.
Review 3:there is no elevator, the check in process is very inefficient, the maid did not come to our door to clean the room till about 4pm when we are taking a nap, the room never get cleaned and towels were not replaced. We were charged for breakfast that we did not know is an option , we were not told about it when we checked in
Review 4:the room is clean, cozy and good value
Review 5:Plumbing issue -- hot and cold switched in the shower, took some time to figure out. Walls very thin, can hear a lot.
Review 6:Staff was friendly. Room was clean. Good value for the price and location.
Review 7:The facilities were sparse and the bathroom a bit tight in a dated sort of way. The stairs were also a little hard to navigate with a severe sprain/my foot in a boot. I knew there wasn't an elevator when I booked; I just didn't anticipate the injury.
Review 8:The Hotel Atwater was conveniently located in the heart of Avalon and across the street from the tour plaza. Staff members were lovely and helpful, and photographs lining the halls harkened back to an earlier era.
Review 9:Nothing!
Review 10:Hotel rooms were nice, located in a central but more quiet part of town. Staff is super friendly. On our last day our door auto-locked because we forgot to check out and all of our luggage was stuck inside. The cards won't open the door and our ferry was leaving in 7 min. Staff was super helpful and got the door open as fast as they could! Great trip!
Review 11:There were no elevators. The hotel is definitely old, run down, and unfortunately outdated. The hair dryer didn't work. The toilet seat looked like it was hanging onto the last hinge. The wallpaper/paint were peeling off. Bathroom door wouldn't close unless you lifted the door up.
Review 12:We appreciated a very welcoming and friendly staff during our stay. The location of the hotel was excellent.
Review 13:Frig and microwave would have been nice, coffee at bens bakery was ok....a little light for us........shower was lukewarm....I really prefer a "hot" shower. Other than that....very nice.
Review 14:Excellent location, very friendly staff, good rates. 1.00 tacos right across the street from 3-7 pm. Close to everything. You don't need a taxi...we walked everywhere (age 55 and 53) We'll rent a golf cart next time to see more of the area. Definitely planning a return
Review 15:Room did not have curtains, made room very bright in the morning. No microwave, fridge or dresser in room. No laundry facility or swimming pool. Windows in room very old and all the noice from outside penetrated.
Review 16:The staff was polite.
Review 17:The staff was very friendly and helpful. They pointed us to all the good activities to do on the island. They were SO friendly and so welcoming. I really enjoyed talking with them and was very impressed. The location was excellent, it was close to the water and easy to locate. We enjoyed our stay very much!
Review 18:Bathroom fixtures were pretty dated and in need of repair. The bathroom in my parents room was silly small.
Review 19:Location was great. Loved that it was a really old Avalon hotel. With that comes the lack of modern amenities.
Review 20:Sports bar across the street from lobby/entrance. Bar is open late so the first few rooms on that side may experience late night noise. Ask for something in the middle or other side .
Review 21:Close to everything , amazing staff and great hospitality.
Review 22:The room was clean but too much bleach and it gave us a little headache.
Review 23:Our check in was not until 1pm so i was glad we were able to check in our luggage. The staff offered to contact us when our rooms were ready. It took less than 30mins.
Review 24:nothing special about the room....extremely small bathroom.....wasn't an issue with ourselves but carrying luggage or walking up 2 or 3 flights of stairs could be an issue for the elderly.....not much of a view from our room
Review 25:location of the hotel was very convenient to walk to anywhere in town.
Review 26:Didn't have a long stay but while we were there everything was fantastic. Hold your luggage for u so you could go explore the island was really really convenient. And the hotel location is perfect. Walking distance to all the hot spots. Including the night life.
Review 27:See above.
Review 28:Nice old Hotel with a lot of history. Room was nice, comfortable bed. One issue, no hot water in the shower. Front desk was very supportive but we had to rush out. They offered to buy us coffee and Danish at the local coffee stand which I thought was great customer service!
Review 29:Stairs vs elevator but I get that it's an older place.
Review 30:Location is central and convenient to all. No elevator will make it hard for seniors or people with limitations so beware. Our room on third floor was quiet and comfortable.
Review 31:No coffee or tea on the premises.Have to dress and go out and stand in line at a shop for a cup of coffee. Come on, guys. Even Motel 6 can put a coffeemaker and cups in the lobby. There is no excuse for this. Amateurish repairs, no plug in sink, faucet on tub not working--if the maid cleans the tub at all, wouldn't she or he notice this and report it?
Review 32:Staff so friendly and accommodating, really good service, very spacious room.
Review 33:The front desk staff was very attentive, extremely courteous, and helpful. Definitely went above and beyond when giving directions and listening to our needs.
Review 34:THAT THERES NO ELEVATOR! NO CLOSET & NO IRONING BOARD BUT THERE WAS A IRON?? ((( NO SENCE @ ALL))) NO BREAKFAST JUS COFFEE BUT NOT THERE A FEW DOORS DOWN SMH & THE SHOWER "OMG" WAS ONLY BIG ENOUGH 4 A TODDLER!!
Review 35:THE BED!!!!!
Review 36:Didn't stay long enough.
Review 37:Loved the clean white sheets and duvet. Big bathroom. Pretty. We overlooked Sumner Street which was great. We had a King Suite with two rooms. Loved it. Pleasant surprise. It was sort of expensive, but you gotta understand, island living is expensive. We were allowed one night, everywhere else wanted two nights.
Review 38:Bathroom is the size of a closet. Barely could move in shower or bathroom. Parts very old, e.g. medicine cabinet and rusted liner. No place to put clothes (drawers)
Review 39:Friendly staff. Overall clean hotel. Air conditioned room!!
Review 40:Noisy on our side of hotel with all-night partying in open public area outside. No elevator. Very little shelf space in bathroom to hold toiletries, etc.
Review 41:Friendly considerate staff. Clean room. Close to town. Nice secure area to stow luggage until check-in time.
Review 42:We didn't realize there was no elevator, we were on the 3rd floor one of us had a gimpy knee and another a hip replacement after a day exploring the beautiful island it was rough going up the stairs.
Review 43:The hotel was very clean ,the beds were extremely comfortable.the staff was great
Review 44:No elevator, but staff offered to carry my heavy baggage up or store what I didn't need on the ground floor. I carried it myself because it really wasn't a problem. I appreciated the offer.
Review 45:Nice location, nice staff. Enjoyable stay.
Review 46:Double-pane windows would be nice to block noise from parking lot/early trash truck. No elevator.
Review 47:Staff is wonderful; beds comfortable; excellent air conditioner, bathroom size and amenities. Really nice perk to have coffee/tea at Ben's - which has wonderful food.
Review 48:Third floor walk-up. No rooms on first floor. No safe or refrigerator in my Standard Queen room.
Review 49:Staff was helpful & cheery. Able to store luggage before check-in & after check-out. Excellent location within walking distance of pier, nearby shopping & sights.
Review 50:The hotel staff is rude. They do not put the guest above their laziness. Don't ask for towels at 6:30 in the morning, or you will be told they do not have the time nor staff to get them for you. I have never been treated with such disrespect from a hotel before. I will never stay with them again nor will any of my friends or family. All of us that went have already left a review on YELP!
Review 51:Rooms are a bit small.
Review 52:The staff was super helpful and friendly and was more than happy to help in any way needed. Nice Air conditioning in the room as well as free WiFi......very important to me as I was on a working vacation.
Review 53:Location, location, location! Clean, nice staff, convenient luggage storage and use of clean bathrooms once checked out. Hotel is old but charming and clean.
Review 54:I was sad to hear of renovations. Reno means more money being charged for rooms per night. Hotel Atwater makes it so we can afford a weekend stay in Catalina. I am afraid we may not be able to stay again once those prices go up. But we would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Review 55:I loved everything about this historical hotel and the location of it! Staff was great! The whole stay was great!
Review 56:Our keys didn't work but, it was resolved quickly.
Review 57:Atwater should really update their pictures online room was better than expected. We were allowed to check in early and have a late check out. Would recommend this place and stay here again.
Review 58:3 floors with no elevator. No coffee in the room. No refrigerator in the room.
Review 59:Loved the spacious all white room. Air conditioning and fan choices. Windows that open to ocean breezes.
Review 60:I had to ask alot of questions in order to find out about luggage. Staff needs to be more imformative. No elavators so walking upstairs to 3rd floor was very much a chore.
Review 61:Love that AC in room works very well. They have cold water & lemonade in lobby. They also can hold any luggage if you arrive earlier. They also ship your luggage to boat that you depart from for no extra charge. Just pick up at luggage claim when you get there.
Review 62:We usually stay across the street at The Glenmore; the Atwater was less expensive, the stairs didn't give me vertigo, the room was basic but clean, comfortable and cool (it was beyond hot during our stay and that A/C was magical). This will be our go-to Avalon hotel in the future.
Review 63:The stairs....we were on the 3 rd floor. Staff kept to them serfs. The pavilion was better I thought. And my girlfriend was awoken at around 3 am. Hearing a man and womens voice in the room by the chair asking why we were in the room. Wierd.....also they need to work on repairs to the rooms.....holes and water damage.
Review 64:It was close to the water and shops.
Review 65:The bedrooms are upstairs and the stars are really steep and long. There was no soap for hands in the bathroom. There was no way to make the water to come out of the shower. It seems that there is a "secret "way to open the fosset, that we did not know. The cleaning staff showed us later how to open the shower fosset. The hotel does not provide coffee pots in the rooms; you have to get out of the hotel and walk about 10 yards to get to a coffee shop where they give you free coffee (just coffee) from 6 to 10!!
Review 66:The location is very good, near the beach.
Review 67:The noise from the outside in our room 212 was extremely annoying. This went on until after midnight both nights. Would not consider staying on that side of the hotel again.
Review 68:Very helpful staff. Very good location. Ben's bakery very nice regarding complementary coffee from the Hotel Atwater.
Review 69:the pillows are horrible. the toilet got clogged twice while there for 5 days. the kid who brought up the plunger tried to hand it to me so that I can unclog the toilet! what??? the second time the man was very nice and quick.
Review 70:our stay was very nice. the location is great.
Review 71:no real place to put wet towels to dry no safe in room
Review 72:were upgraded to a king bed room! we had A/C there was no smoking/no pet policy (we have allergies to both) great location complimentary breakfast at neighboring bakery given to compensate for fire alarm being activated at 6am
Review 73:Wifi didn't work well, but we were on vacation and needed to put our phones down anyway
Review 74:Neat old building, great location, friendly knowledgable staff
Review 75:Stairs.....way too many for older people with knee problems. False fire alarm in early morning...but gave us a compliment treat at Ben's Cafe
Review 76:Staff was very friendly....lemon water in lobby
Review 77:There is no elevator, and the room's are a bit small, as is the shower, but just about every hotel on the island is cramped for space and rarely is there an elevator.
Review 78:The Atwater was lovely. Great staff, and located near the beach. The room was small, but very clean and decorated in a clean and modern way. I loved how bright the room was, it felt very comforting. Newer furniture, freshly painted walls, a comfy bed and cleanliness is really all I ask for in a hotel and the Atwater met all these requirements and then some. I really enjoyed my stay and will highly recommend it as it is one of the more modern places to stay on the island.
Review 79:Honestly everything was great, but please bring back coffee and tea in the lobby. (Wine and cheese would be super-fab too!) Old Ben is great but the lobby is closer. Also, a patio with tables and chairs to sit and relax and eat our Von's takeout would be an outstanding addition! Also more hooks over the tubs to hang wet items--never understand why hotels, esp beach hotels, don't understand all the wet gear we are constantly slinging around. :)
Review 80:Great, comfy, convenient value hotel.
Review 81:No elevator.
Review 82:Near the beach and they held dive gear and bags for us in a baggage room downstairs. They also sent bags to ferry so we didn't have to haul them over ourselves.
Review 83:We liked everything! I guess that if stairs were out of the question for you this property probably would not work.
Review 84:Lovely facility and very welcoming staff and very up to date accommodations. I went from this hotel to the Marriott at LAX - I had to go searching for outlets at the Marriott but not so at the Atwater!
Review 85:Rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floor with no elevator, and there is no coffee in the room. You have to go to the cafe next door for coffee.
Review 86:The staff was great, the bed was comfortable, and the location was perfect. I would stay here again.
Review 87:The wifi sucked. We could never get service. Used our Verizon instead. The furnace or water heater must have some issues because if we opened our windows for fresh air the smell of burning sulfur came in from the roof of the hotel. The hotel has no elevator, which sucks. If you end up on the 3rd floor good luck. I'd stay here again though, it's the best location on Avalon and the best price.
Review 88:Location Location Location! Loved the location! Right in the middle of everything! Walk to the beach, restaurants and shops! Hotel is old but worth it for the price. Beds are super comfy, bathrooms are clean and showers are roomy. The staff is very nice! Always greeted us with a smile had tons of information ;)
Review 89:Showers are a little on the small side, wifi is spotty and our TV didn't have a power cord for the first couple nights
Review 90:Very friendly staff, clean, location and value for your money
Review 91:Noise from dance club up the street.
Review 92:Beautiful place to relax, clean, great front desk staff. Rebecca was an outstanding hostess. Courtesy lemonade was delightful.
Review 93:Upon arrival we went to check our bags and the electricity shorted out in the hotel. Later, the bathroom sink broke and flooded our bathroom in the middle of the night and instead of compensating us for our room or offering a different one we dealt with employees wandering in and out for about an hour at one in the morning. This was partially due to the fact that it was the security guard and front desk employees trying to fix the issue without any maintenance personnel on duty. They were very nice but did not know what to do. In the morning when we checked out they gave us tickets to a local attraction but the employees were incredibly rude to deal with. I visit every few years to Avalon and my aunt, who traveled with me, visits a few times a year. This was a terrible experience and neither of us would recommend this hotel to anyone and we have no plans to return.
Review 94:The rooms were adequate and the night time staff were pleasant.
Review 95:I don't have any complaints.
Review 96:The hotel was quaint and in a great location. Also, I loved how they held our bags for us before we checked in and after we checked out so we could stroll around town without having to carry everything with us.
Review 97:Can't even really complain because everything else was so nice, but the Wi-Fi connection was essentially unusable from our third floor room.
Review 98:Room was bright and airy. Nice to have a ceiling fan for the warm evenings (and there was also AC available. Bathroom was spacious and very clean. The hotel, even in a vintage building, has clearly been updated and maintained well while still keeping a great retro Catalina vibe. Very close to everything.
Review 99:Too many stairs...I should have thought of this prior to booking. My fault. :(
Review 100:Location! Loved Old Ben's coffee café. Their staff and the Hotels staff were so friendly.
Review 101:Shower was either ice cold or scalding hot. No in between. Wifi was awful. No hair dryer in room or at front desk.
Review 102:The room was great. Very clean and fresh. Staff was friendly and helpful. Loved their accents. Nicely located.
Review 103:The staff was friendly and the property nostalgic. We read reviews before selecting this hotel. It's super small but an excellent value for a short stay.
Review 104:The bathroom is small and I felt claustrophobic in the shower. The inside rooms look out on a roof and wall of the apartments next door (but you don't visit Avalon to stay in your room).
Review 105:This old hotel is charming and very clean. The staff was well-trained, helpful and courteous. I had a quiet night in a comfortable bed--the important things.
Review 106:I wasn't aware that there were complimentary beach towels, till too late. As I was leaving I heard someone at front desk ask for them ~ I sure could have used them the day before.
Review 107:Location is outstanding. Rooms are super neat & clean ~ just what I like. Staff was very courteous and helpful and pleasant.
Review 108:I have a bad knee and no elevator. We did request a second floor room because of this and they were very accommodating.
Review 109:Our room was nice and clean. We loved how we could leave our belongings until check in time and have access throughout the day. Very pleasant and helpful staff.
Review 110:The bed was awful. Woke up stiff with a back ache both days. Hotel looked dingy/ old. Price was high for the rooms.
Review 111:Loved the location and staff was friendly
Review 112:Room wasn't ready, booked two rooms which were on opposite sides of the hotel on different floors and had to fight for an extra hour at check out. Very noisy!
Review 113:Customer service
Review 114:Accommodations was very poor! Checking in and check out times are terrible! If check in is 3pm and check out is 11am, its not considered a 24 hour stay. No elevators, if your with kids and alot of luggage it makes it difficult especially on the 3rd floor
Review 115:Just a few of the staff members.
Review 116:There was a mix-up in the credit card charges, the cost of the room was high, I got hit on the head by one of the workers' mops and didn't receive an apology.
Review 117:As long as you realize the Atwater is an older hotel, you'll be fine...everytime I book a room, I'm never sure of what I'll get..from a small sink and mirror to get ready in the bedroom that surprisingly had a larger than life shower to a proportionate bathroom/bedroom all in the same hotel...not much for the view which isn't a problem if you plan on being out and about...no luggage pickup at the pier, so you have to drag it to the center of town..not aware of any continental breakfast, but I may be wrong...
Review 118:Most important in any hotel...it has to be CLEAN..and it is...the staff are friendly, central location, old hotel charm, reasonable rates for the location, and the beds are comfortable...
Review 119:The only problem was that although they offered free wi fi, we were never able to connect. Good news is there were so many things to do that we never even missed it!
Review 120:We loved the staff and the charm of this hotel. We were always treated nicely and felt very welcome.
Review 121:Bathroom facilities were questionable. Shower curtain too short so water went all over floor mildew around tub. space for toiletries etc such as vanity top or shelf were non existent. Hook to hang clothes on door was only useful for a 6' tall person.
Review 122:The location was convenient.
Review 123:We appreciated being able to check our bags at the hotel upon our early-morning arrival by boat, and being notified by phone when our room was ready. I asked for a "room with a view" and the staff complied; I was very happy!
Review 124:The wifi is not strong enough to be able to connect. We have to take the stairs all the way to 3rd floor.
Review 125:We love the location. Super close to everything. The staff are very accomodating. Our room is nice and comfortable.
Review 126:nice to have real glasses in the room
Review 127:liked the cofee from Ben's coffee next door that was complimentary, great location, awful pillows... nice to have the ice water in the lobby and luggage storage before and after checkout...
Review 128:Front desk was under-staffed when we were trying to check out and a line of people was trying to check in, our room didn't have a hair dryer and our bathroom was so tiny
Review 129:Good location, good value for money, they hold your stuff before check in/after check out, desk staff are friendly
Review 130:The room is a little small.
Review 131:Nice location, very close to the beach. Staff are very nice and helpful there. They provide free baggage storage and beach towel. Although breakfast is not included, there is also coffee available.
Review 132:This hotel was top of the tree for us. Location friendly, very clean and a joy to stay at without doubt. The only downside if there is one would is the stairs to all the rooms for people with disabilities.
Review 133:Location
Review 134:No elevator. It is an old place. With old bathrooms and living space. Needs a total makeover in the hallways and the rooms themselves.AND not just making over the lobby which looks deceivingly charming and modernized.
Review 135:The location is amazing. The Staff is awesome. There is a friendly water and coffee station to greet you.
Review 136:one window did not shut properly, could hear water dripping all night from rain gutter. Shower ceiling was dripping cold water on my neck, from the plumbing above. The nighstand lamp on the right, wouldn't stop flickering when lit.
Review 137:Close to center of town. The young lady who checked us in was very pleasant and helpful.
Review 138:The property is older and does need some maintenance. One of the lights was out in the bathroom and even after multiple notices, did not get fixed. The room was pretty small and it doesn't have a refrigerator, which would have been really nice.
Review 139:The staff was friendly and accommodating, and the location was excellent - right in the heart of the action. Everything is in easy walking distance. The bed was pretty comfy, though I'm not a fan of the down pillows. Free towels for the beach and portage of your luggage to the dock is a great big plus!
Review 140:Noise from street 24/7... Very difficult to sleep...I was diagnosed by a doctor with exhaustion and that's why I went there to get some rest
Review 141:staff is friendly price is within my budget
