Reviews for The Astor Hotel

Review 1:Room was much to hot. Had to open window to cool it down. After, couldn't get temp to a resonable level. Bathroom had a step up going in and had to step down coming out. This can be hazardous to someone that is tired, drunk, or older. Noise level from hallway was bad. Could hear everyone in the room next door. The hallway smelled pretty bad. This hotel needs a refresh badly. If I were them, I would lower the price of a room to at least $79.00 a night, if not lower!

Review 2:Price was ok, should be less, and bed was comfortable. Front desk was nice and upgraded room for free, but not really much of an upgrade.

Review 3:A few problems: the room was cold (6th floor) but they brought us blankets and a space heater. Housekeeping did not always leave us enough towels. There was a really ugly stain on the hall rug. The restaurant was not open during our stay (Dec. 25-28).

Review 4:Friendly staff, great access to both the family we were visiting in downtown Milwaukee and to restaurants and grocery stores. We walked everywhere that we needed to go.

Review 5:No refrigerator in room. Liitle a bit aside as from the lakefront also from downtown.

Review 6:Old-fashioned hotel with an old-time charm. Room with two king-size beds was comfortable enough.

Review 7:Stayed on a Saturday night. Questionable night club located within the hotel with guests wearing bullet proof vests....not exactly a comforatble feeling when staying for the night. Paper thin walls-could hear our neighbors coughing. The halls smelled like marajuana and the air was stuffy. Would not stay at this hotel again.

Review 8:Good location. Parking free on weekends if you can find a spot.

Review 9:IT was a tad out dated for the price, but this is a historic building with a lot of historic value. We were very impressed with staff and amenities.

Review 10:Great location and nice amenities.

Review 11:It smelled a little musty but we didn't spend much time in the room so we didn't mind. $10/night for parking when side streets were only 2-3 hour meter parking. It should be free!

Review 12:I liked that it wasn't a typical new hotel. It had a lot of fun qwerks such as how dry cleaning drops of laundry to the door and the mail slots. I don't want to give everything away! They also had a free bus shuttle but we still tipped!

Review 13:I had ants on the floor of my bathroom of room, #255.

Review 14:It was an old classic hotel in a great location and a friendly staff. Funny thing, I guess I'm used to newer hotels. I asked for 2 double beds and actually got two adjoining rooms with a double bed in each! It was great and for the two of us getting ready at the same time, each having our own bathroom was great!

Review 15:Think we got older room not re done yet.bed good but room quite small and windows old no screens so could not open .no air conditioner in yet.think they are replacing windows though.restaurant in hotel looked nice but not opened but is irish bar across st.

Review 16:Location.good parking.unique building character takes u back in time.grocery store down the street to get coffee and snacks.Bucca italian restuarant around corner great esp for group of people.would come back

Review 17:If I had been in town longer and/or with my wife, I wouldn't choose the Astor. It's old and doesn't seem to have been updated at all in decades. The walls are pretty thin, the bathroom is bare bones, and I had to run the window unit AC on high all night (with outside temps in the low 40s) to keep it from being too hot.

Review 18:Location was great, and all I was looking for was a reasonably priced room that didn't need to be high end. I was only in town for one night to see old friends and sleep in a bit the next morning. I wasn't in the room except to sleep and it served it's purpose.

Review 19:The bed or maybe just pillows were extremely uncomfortable. I understand it is an old hotel but there were about 10 huge spiders around the room as well as no refrigerator or microwave.

Review 20:The staff was great and I love the look and feel of the old hotel.

Review 21:There were hidden charges that I wasn't told about until after I saw the charges. There was not a dresser in the room, and the walls are paper thin, I could hear every little sound in the hall and the room next door. The man that checked me in was very friendly to the person checking in before me and even gave them a free upgrade because they were from Chicago, but was short towards me and started talking to other people in the lobby while I was waiting to check in, I am also from Chicago and no upgrade was given to me.

Review 22:Just a few block walk to the busy downtown area.

Review 23:You have to pay to park there. I think that should be included in the price. There wasn't an outlet anywhere near the coffee maker. Some of the doors stick. There isn't much in the way of soundproofing. The room smelled strange when we arrived, we kinda got used to it after being there.

Review 24:There are some cool old antique touches to the building, I loved the mail chute. Great water pressure! Complimentary makeup remover towelettes were a nice touch.

Review 25:Room was insanely hot, and smelled awful. We kept the windows open all night to avoid the heat and smell. Staff were really slow getting room ready- too busy talking about their hungover coworkers. If you book here make sure to bring slippers or something to wear in the room- the carpet is nasty.

Review 26:View from room was good, location of hotel was good.

Review 27:Rooms very small, Cannot control temp of room, very hot and stuffy. Walls paper thin. Place was run down and dingy. Housekeeping entered room and touched personal belongings after told they were not needed. Loud drunk guests into early morning hours, broken beer bottles just outside elevator and drunks passed out in hallways. Only 1 person on staff overnight and no security to deal with rowdy guests. Worst hotel experience I have ever had.

Review 28:very noisey - wall are apparently not insulated and you can hear everything all around you all night long - and things you don't want to hear! very outdated - doors don't close properly and no way to control tempature of the room. Very small rooms for the money!

Review 29:the historic feel of the hotel

Review 30:For an old hotel I was very surprised at how loud it was in the rooms when people where in the hallway. It was like they were in my room. Stayed in a lot of hotels and never had it that loud. Also, I understand there are apartments and kitchens in this hotel, but I have to say the food smells that lingered in the hallways and into our room where awful. We always seem to have great stays at hotels so I don't want to sound like one of those complaining cutomers, but these smells just made for a bad experience.

Review 31:Location was good. The hotel and room were clean for the price. Staff was nice.

Review 32:Some of the Astor allowed smoking as it also used as apartments.

Review 33:Walking distance to Brady street and the lake. Short cab ride to downtown. Pet friendly bars, tons of people bicycling.

Review 34:I was a little surprised at how dingy the hallways and lobby were. I know it is an older hotel, I thought there would be some charm in that - but it was really just an old hotel.

Review 35:The rooms were clean.

Review 36:Cleanliness, noise level, room temperature and terrible parking.

Review 37:The staff was friendly and the location was great.

Review 38:Heater was off but the room was so hot still. Had to sleep with the window open all night which made it a little noisy.

Review 39:There were a few cob webs in the room around the lights and on the ceiling

Review 40:Great customer service, very informative and friendly

Review 41:Effect of Soundproof

Review 42:The building was registered as national historic building and it's beautiful.

Review 43:old beds

Review 44:Great location

Review 45:The bed was terrible

Review 46:Everything but my bed and toom could use attention lamp loose on the wall TV need tightening in room 712

Review 47:The room needs more light at night.

Review 48:Very nice hotel, the people is so nice. The weiter in the restaurant was great, and the lobby guy so professional.

Review 49:Nice. Clean. Beautiful. Safe.

Review 50:beds-smell

Review 51:staff

Review 52:We've had two rooms and in one of the rooms free WiFi didn't work.

Review 53:Very friendly and helpfull staff.

Review 54:Hallways were hot and stuffy!

Review 55:Room layout was good for my birthday party. We asked for a fan and someone brought one up right away.

Review 56:WiFi was spotty and hallways were steaming in the hot temperatures

Review 57:Very swanky for the price, friendly staff, cute historical

Review 58:Little far from downtown area we were going to.

Review 59:Very nice ornate hotel. Staff was friendly. Bob the Shuttle Driver was wonderful.

Review 60:Should have free parking for guests. Need coffee station in morning.

Review 61:Charming hotel. Rooftop deck great Great outdoor area in front of hotel

Review 62:The beds and pillows were horrible. Lumpy bed and small hard uncomfortable pillows!

Review 63:I liked having free WiFi

Review 64:no hot water

Review 65:price and location

Review 66:Lobby and reception area.

Review 67:price

Review 68:never said anything on there website that you had to pay for patking

Review 69:Friendly staff

Review 70:Takes awhile to get a taxi however, it could have just been the night.

Review 71:Value of room

Review 72:Workers are not polite

Review 73:Liked nothing about this place

Review 74:Maybe upgrading to electronic locks? Other than that, the hotel was great.

Review 75:It looked like the hotel from the Shining.

Review 76:The staff was very considerate and helpful

Review 77:I liked the rusic feel and friendly staff. Cool to see the old hotel style.

Review 78:Reservation was lost and rooms were small.

Review 79:The location

Review 80:Just old not well kept it was 75 degrees in our room all night could be restored to former grandor but doubtful the location would support the cost

Review 81:Ideal location. By walking we were able to see many attractions in the area.

Review 82:Shower wasn't clean.

Review 83:Not cookie cutter uniformity, unique.

Review 84:Great restaurant, charming lobby, nice, casual rooftop seating with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan.

Review 85:Dated Hotel, needs some repairs

Review 86:Location, Staff

Review 87:Quiet location in proximity to downtown and Summerfest

Review 88:The bathroom and the room was smaller than I thought. It was also pricey for the size of the room. Bed was too hard, hard to sleep on.

Review 89:We actually thought the room could have been set up differently so the bed wasn't immediately in front of you when you entered the room. Just the moving of some of the furniture and placement of the tv.

Review 90:Very quiet! Easy in out.

Review 91:Because the hotel is so old, the walls are paper thin! The ladies in the room next to us were having a conversation in a "normal" tone and we could almost hear the whole thing.

Review 92:The hotel is very historic and beautiful. It is a very nice part of Milwaukee, not far from the lake, but not far from downtown. They have a shuttle that takes you anywhere you need to go.

Review 93:Thin walls. Lumpy mattress. Heat was too high. Room was somewhat stuffy.

Review 94:The staff was very friendly and eager to please. Excellent facilities. Located within walking distance of nearly everything worth seeing in downtown. Great value.

Review 95:We had breaksfast and the food was not good. It was canned hash, prepared hollandaise sauce, greasy eggs.

Review 96:The DeadMan's Carnival The room The opulance of the lobby andfacilities

Review 97:Very old and very small room and was not worth the money at all. I paidfor the hotel room at time of stay. 2Days later I looked online at myaccount and noticed that they tacked on a $20 parking fee withoutletting me know. I went back to my reservation confirmation and noticedit said there could be a $7 guest parking fee. Where did they come upwith one day $20??? rip off. The only nice thing was that the staff wasvery nice.

Review 98:Restaurant separate, not able to bill to room. Limited menu, zero healthy items.

Review 99:Location near park. Cheap parking. Traditional decor, well-maintained.

Review 100:The hotel is a bit worn. It looked nearly the same as when my parents stayed there 30 years ago. It could use a bit of updating.

Review 101:We loved the location. We are thinking of moving to that part of town & wanted to experience it.

Review 102:Our on line confirmation stated breakfast was included and itwasn'T. The insure cocktail lounge was supposed to close at 2am andwhen we returned at midnight it was closed.

Review 103:The location was excellent and the staff were very accommodating.Parking was convenient.

Review 104:It was a ho day and the window AC was noisy, but it did cool the room.

Review 105:We liked the fact that it was an historic hotel, not a standard cookie cutter establishment. We liked that it was a downtown hotel with parking, which was very convenient as we were driving, and the price was good. The view from the roof top was also a bonus. We only stayed overnight but this looks like a nice place to stay for a few days.

Review 106:I stayed with another persons who traveled from a different direction than I, so we had 2 cars, but the hotel could only give one parking spot per room. I didn't like having to park one car on the street & was concerned with finding parking that was realatively close to the hotel.

Review 107:Location was nice, the neighborhood has a nice ambiance, and is quiet even though its in a downtown.

Review 108:Sorry for my english but I am not american ! Noisy,Small ,dark room, overlooking a wall while we were in the 9th floor! The shower did notwork well! ... we were told on our arrival that we had to pay thebreakfast !! But we booked a room with breakfast included! We had tofight with the front desk every morning! They only had one key for theroom when we arrived as we were two people and we did the check out theyclaimed to give them the second key! Crazy!!!

Review 109:Pretty hall with a piano

Review 110:Bathroom could use a fan to get rid of moisture from showering.

Review 111:Friendly, personable, and helpful with ride to Harbor House. Ben was very accomodating, and Brian was very interesting to talk with and get helpful advice .

Review 112:The bathroom in Rm. 515 was terrible! The tub had a peeling surface and there was some substance streaking down the walls. Why put all the updates in the kitchen and leave the bathroom looking like that. Bulbs in the lights are too dim. We were disappointed that there was no notice that the bar was no longer open.

Review 113:We love the location. We have stayed here once before and multiple times at the Knickerbocker on the Lake. We like the heritage feel. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen in our Queen Suite was nice. Housekeepers were kind.

Review 114:Restaurant was not open yet so had to go elsewhere for lunch or dinner. It is supposed to re-open in May. Heating system old. You just have to know you will have to put up with a few things in a historic registry hotel. Many more positives than negatives.

Review 115:Lovely old historic hotel surrounded by church steeples and only a short distance away from Lake. You can hear the beautiful church bells. Breakfast downstairs was free & good. Friendly, helpful staff. We were there for a wedding reception for family. Beautiful place for reception.

Review 116:The bathroom set up was slightly out of date and there was no mini fridge to store food.

Review 117:I enjoyed the look and feel of the in house restaurant and bar.

Review 118:Hotel smelled. Parking lot was really in bad shape with potholes. A lotof noise at night. Hotel is grossly in need of refurbishing. It could bea really great boutique hotel. However, it looks like a flop house, andwe wouldn't have otherwise stayed there, except for it was close toour son's apartment.

Review 119:Good location. Easy to get to. Beautiful old lobby

Review 120:Clean, but older facility that doesn't openly admit that it has long term residents among the hotel rooms.

Review 121:Central location and cleanliness

Review 122:Staff Very old building in poor condition.

Review 123:Good Restaurant across the street

Review 124:I thought the hotel could use some updating while keeping the historic feel of the hotel.

Review 125:I liked the location of the property.

Review 126:being an old building it was a little noisy

Review 127:close proximity to area, reasonable rates, very nice eating area

Review 128:This hotel is beautiful. Truly an example of old school class and charm

Review 129:Restaurant food was not to my liking.

Review 130:The staff was very helpful and the bed was comfortable. We put the shuttle bus to good use.

Review 131:no cable T.V.

Review 132:The hotel was very charming , The breakfast was excellent. .

Review 133:the heater wasn't working well in wind and cold weather.

Review 134:Had to pay extra to park

Review 135:quiet
