Reviews for B&B Hortensia
Review 1:Extremely good location and convenience of parking. Very comfortable room and Veronique is a lovely host. Breakfast was good and would definitely stay again if visiting Ypres.
Review 2:An all round very good B and B, but the breakfast deserves special mention. Very tasty with a good, fresh selection including home baking - even eggs and bacon were cooked to order. The owners were friendly and helpful, and the location is very good, just 10 mins walk from centre / Menin Gate, with convenient free car parking close by. Would definitely stay again and would recommend without hesitation.
Review 3:An excellent B&B in a reasonable position (a good walk or a short taxi ride/drive to centre) Very friendly welcome, comfortable and clean room. Breakfast was very good too, a good choice and plenty to eat ready for the day ahead!
Review 4:Veronique & Michael were so friendly and made us very welcome. The rooms were fantastic and we had a very comfortable and relaxing stay. The breakfasts were delicious with a huge range to choose from. I would recommend B&B Hortensia to anyone visiting Ypres.
Review 5:Not as homely as a normal b&b that I am used to in uk, as I stop in farmhouse b&b. But understandably very much a business, which is fine. Parking the motorbike on the roadside was a slight worry but didn't loose any sleep over it, as the Belgian people are lovely.
Review 6:Helpful staff. Comfortable bed and good room functional. Super convenient to catch up with my whole group of motorcyclists that were spread throughout central Ypres. Great selection for breakfast.
Review 7:we slept with open window, which let traffic noise into the room. We are used to that in our own house, so this was no problem.
Review 8:Good location in city centre. Adequate room. Very good breakfast, friendly staff, homely feel. Good wifi.
Review 9:The staircase was a little narrow and steep.
Review 10:Excellent breakfast and the offer of a packet lunch as it would have been very difficult to get one as we travelled around the area. Also the lady was very helpful in planning our excursion around the sites of interest.
Review 11:steep stairs , no lift but coped ok host helped carry bags up.
Review 12:Within the old walls , 4 mins nice flat stroll into the square and restaurants/cafes and 2 more to the menine gate. Excellent breakfast , very nice and helpful hosts , close free parking , deli over the road. Big room and bathroom
Review 13:Veronica is an excellent host. The large room was very clean, had high ceilings and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed a great breakfast. Lots of variety.
Review 14:This was the first stop on our 12 day trip. It was the perfect way to start our vacation. We loved the room, the area out back to sit at night, the food was amazing - I wish we would have had the lunch to go everyday! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality!
Review 15:If You have difficulties to move in stairs, this is not a place for You. Rooms are in the 2nd and 3rd floors and there is no elevator. (To us no problem.)
Review 16:Place is easy to find at the end of the main street. About 10 min. walk to the town square. The Lady of the house and her husband take good care of the guests. Clean, revovated rooms and good breakfast.
Review 17:Traffic noise over the cobbled street may disturb sleepers who do not habitually carry ear-plugs with them (like bikers do!) - we stayed on the street-front side of the B&B so cannot comment on other rooms. There is no lift, so guests with mobility problems may struggle beyond the ground / first floor.
Review 18:Good value for money, truly excellent breakfasts, modern decor and clean. Limited on-street parking across the road was available for our motorbikes without effort in late May.
Review 19:Nothing not to like here. Maybe parking is a bit less accessible than anticipated
Review 20:Super, spacious room. Comfortable bed, lovely bathroom. Breakfast second to none
Review 21:Nothing.
Review 22:Only a short walk to the city centre and was lucky to find free parking 20 seconds away by foot. It's a nice town house that's converted to a professional B+B. Although it's on a street it was very quiet. Plus- eggs cooked to order! A good value 3 star stay.
Review 23:That we couldn't book in until 5 pm ...We had been travelling 5 hours & would have been good to get booked in earlier yo freshen up. My fault as I didn't realise we couldn't book in until then.
Review 24:Walking distance to the Menin Gate and easy to drive in and out of this city from this accommodation. Parking nearby. The home cooked warm brown bread with sunflower seeds served with breakfast was an extra treat!
Review 25:Helpfulness....a 10 minute walk to the town centre and, using a car as we did, only a few yards in from the Lille Gate which to leave the town by to explore Passhendaele front.
Review 26:Location. Staff very friendly and helpful;. Room big, simple furniture but very adequate. Lots of brochures available. Excellent breakfast, cooked to order. Packed lunches available.
Review 27:Decor was a little dark and depressing. One friend in room on front of building found the early morning traffic noise intrusive.
Review 28:Locality, excellent breakfast, spotlessly clean rooms. Warm and comfortable. Functional rooms with no friperies.
Review 29:It was a long walk from the station with luggage.
Review 30:Lovely decor, very clean and fresh. Superb breakfast and lovely packed lunch at short notice. Extremely helpful. Easy to communicate in English.
Review 31:If you find it difficult to sleep with traffic noise, request a room at the back as it is on the main cobbled road into Ypres.
Review 32:Friendly staff, comfortable room, clean everywhere, parking nearby, easy walk to central square and Menin Gate, and good breakfast.
Review 33:The parking was inconvenient but manageable. At times felt that we were asking annoying questions.
Review 34:Spartan but adequate bedroom. The breakfast was excellent. Would recommend the B&B.
Review 35:Great welcome by very attentive owners. Attention to detail. Flexibility. Good location to arrive by car with free parking close by. Easy walking distance to town centre. Comfortable. Clean. Great breakfast. Superlatives galore.
Review 36:There is nothing that we could find to disappoint at the Hortensia .Located within the old city walls parking is also available in thehistoric center or it's a short walk on safe quiet sidewalks. Localparking is also available. The windows are double glazed and keep outalmost all street noise.
Review 37:Veronique is a most gracious and helpful host. Her husband also is sowelcoming. Every question is answered and all details of the lodging andarea touring are carefully explained...with smiles!! The comfort isunsurpassed and breakfast is fully complete, healthy and nutritious, hotand cold, most everything. We would always try to stay here again.Veronique and her Hortensia ahs been a highlight of our month in Europe!
Review 38:In truth, nothing. It is a good location where you are near the main features but in a quieter street, away from the hustle and bustle.
Review 39:Well-run b&b in the old town of Ieper itself. Experienced proprietors. Easy walk to the main square, Menin Gate, Cloth Hall and the ramparts. It is right beside the Lille gate. Parking nearby.
Review 40:Over night parking was not convenient to the property.
Review 41:It was absolutely spotless and comfortable. Location was excellent. Hosts were welcoming and helpful. Veronique lent us her maps and gave us a book of vouchers to use at various attractions. Breakfast was excellent with the added extra of eggs and bacon as well as the usual continental breakfast.
Review 42:The shower cubicle was very cramped and uncomfortable. No tea-making facilities in the room. The main problem was that we had a bedroom at the front of the house, fronting one of the busiest streets in Ypres and the traffic didn't stop all night. For the two nights of our stay I got hardly any sleep. If you book here try to get a room at the back!
Review 43:The owner was unfussy, brisk and efficient and spoke good English. We had a key so could come and go as we pleased. The price was very reasonable. The breakfast was enormous and very good. No problems with parking..
Review 44:Took ages to find using bing directions and roads dug up. Easiest to use road outside walls and go in that way. Not hotels fault but worth pointing out.
Review 45:We arrived late but no problem getting in and good parking nearby. Good breakfast, fresh cooked eggs and good choices of food.
Review 46:we have stayed at the Hortensia quite a few times and we love it. The owners Veronique and Michael cant do enough for you. Great breakfast , Lovely big rooms with BBC1 & 2 TV for the English. The hotel is near the Lille Gate and only a short walk to Ypres centre and the Menin gate. We will definitely go back again.
Review 47:comfortable, clean, friendly welcome and great choice breakfast. bit of advice if traveling on a motorcycle contact in advance to reserve a space in the garage.
Review 48:The location is not ideal if you are arriving by train as it is completely on the opposite side of the city from the railway station. The room was a really big disappointment. A 12 inch rail protruding from the wall was our wardrobe for two people, no drawers at all in the room and what appeared to be an old school desk which you could not put anything on as it sloped. We had to take a very small stool from the bathroom to act as a bedside table as we had nothing at all by by either bedside. The shower was very good but the cubicle was extremely small and cramped. Also, as most people comment on, why put a kettle in the room but no tea/coffee/milk etc? As it was only my son and me staying we were prepared to put up with it's many shortcomings as it was clean and the beds were comfortable but I could not take my wife to stay there. If you want basic and you are only there for a couple of nights (we were there for 5 nights) you will be ok because very basic accomodation is what you get. All in all, a big disappointment and definitely not value for money. Everything about it appears to be done to minimise costs. I will return to Ieper but not to the Hortensia.
Review 49:Staff were friendly, dining room was quite pleasant and breakfast was ample and well presented.
Review 50:Veronique is an excellent host and keen to ensure you make the most of your visit to the area. Just 5 minute walk takes you to the main square.Came back after a days sight seeing, and was greeted with coffee and cake.Clean room, good breakfast, would recommend this place to anyone.Would stay here again.
