Reviews for Ambrose Bierce House

Review 1:Inn keeper not present, refused to provide breakfast the next day (at a bed and breakfast!), provided no guidance as to how to access heat or use shower, showed poor customer relations, and threatened not to honor Booking.Com b/c of a mistake he said the company made (not taking a credit card) and threatened, on Xmas day, to not honor the agreement, and has so far not provided a discount for not serving the promised breakfast!

Review 2:Location

Review 3:The loft room/flat was not very clean. Dirt (not just dust) was "standing" in the kitchen sink (peculiar because easily could have been washed down the sink), and dirt and cobwebs were visible on/near the floor by the sliding door. I got the sense no one had stayed in this room recently, and it needed to be freshened up. No coffee in room/kitchen. Sole staff member (not on premises 24 hours/day) promised to bring some when he checked me in but then never did. When he brought my breakfast the next morning, he again mentioned the need for coffee with no apparent recollection that he had promised to take care of this the night before. He also brought two breakfasts, apparently having forgotten I was a solo guest. I checked in during the designated afternoon/evening window, but had to track him down when I arrived. He was friendly but distracted and clearly in a rush to leave.

Review 4:The fruit salad with breakfast was the highlight of the stay--really delicious, with a wide variety of fruits and berries. The inn happily accommodated my low-sodium request.

Review 5:(a) Absentee ownership, so no one was present to "host," as is typical in a B&B. (b) The heating system for our room was connected to the rest of the house and was extremely and uncomfortably HOT for two of the four nights we were there.

Review 6:Location and staff were very good. Chef was a wonderful young man.

Review 7:Location, location, location! You can't beat it. Cristhian, the innkeeper, made our trip even more memorable with his warm, fun attitude and delicious multi-course breakfast each morning!

Review 8:Very charming facilities! Loved Christhian!! So enjoyed his lovely breakfast and friendly chat! Very homey/comfortable feel about the place. Loved having wine in the swing on the porch!

Review 9:I enjoyed the breakfast (fresh fruit compote and an oatmeal brulee), but two of the guests didn't eat theirs (for medical reasons?) and no substitute was offered. Bathtub in our room had a high and wide side and was hard for me to get into due to an arthritic knee.

Review 10:Warm hospitality, very central location, tasty breakfast, comfortable bed and delightfully furnished. Cheese and nibbles at the end of the afternoon a nice touch, as was being introduced to our fellow guests, which is good if you're sharing a communal table with them. Would be happy to return (but not to a front room as there appeared to be a lot of early traffic noise).

Review 11:Our room was small with lots of furniture which meant no room for 2 suitcases. Breakfast was good but they only had one sitting and no choice.

Review 12:Would have appreciated the offer of some kind of take away breakfast - we had to leave at 7. Something on the ironing board stained our clothing.

Review 13:Breakfast was nice. It was great not to have to take the car out to shop and go to local restaurants. Afternoon glass of wine a nice touch.

Review 14:Nothing to dislike.

Review 15:Staff was terrific. Very accommodating and knowledgeable. Property is within easy walking distance to anywhere in this quaint little town. We especially enjoyed the upstairs porch with it's chairs and swing looking out over the main street.Would stay there again with no hesitation.

Review 16:Shower tub in room very picturesque, but my wife was unable to get in it. Fortunately was able to use walk in shower on main floor.

Review 17:Erin was extremely helpful and full of knowledge about the area. She arranged programs for us.

Review 18:Breakfast was very good and the experience with other guests was fun and very pleasant! A delightful surprise as this was my first experience at a B&B.

Review 19:Our bed was a little soft for our taste. Also, the fire station across the street tests the siren at periodic intervals, although it never sounded at night.

Review 20:Breakfast was great! Fresh fruit every morning, along with a hearty dish. Came and went as we pleased. Location was within walking distance of great restaurants, shopping and a short drive to many wineries. Innkeepers were friendly and helpful. Vic offered great advice on winery tours and restaurants. He also helped us with reservations. All in all a great time !

Review 21:No spoons with the coffee making facilities.

Review 22:The local wine served every night with snacks was delicious. The homemade breakfast was great. The location in pretty St Helena is great and lots of local vineyards nearby (platapus wine tours is the best). The hosts were lovely and very knowledgable about the area. We met some great people staying at the guest house and had a fab time talking to them.

Review 23:The laundry detergent is a bit strong, but your guaranteed clean towels and linens.

Review 24:Great service and amenities. Great location and very comfortable accommodations.

Review 25:We loved everything

Review 26:We loved the location, charm and coziness of the bed and breakfast. The innkeeper was great, we will definitely be back.

Review 30:Greet innkeeper. Made all his guest feel welcome and took the time to introduce everyone.

Review 32:The staff and the facility

Review 33:Perfect location perfect host and beyond perfect breakfast. The room was great. A must stay at place

Review 37:Nothing

Review 38:Comfort of room, porch, great breakfast, location walking distance to everything in St Helena, lovely old house

Review 39:Erin, was fabulous. Great personality, friendly, and very knowledgeable with the area of Napa

Review 40:Great location and hospitable hosts. Would stay there again when in the area.

Review 41:Wifi was unstable.

Review 42:The breakfast was absolutely amazing!

Review 43:The staff commented multiple times about how long we were staying (5 days), which made us feel unwelcome.

Review 44:wonderful location

Review 45:Very quaint accommodation. Staff excellent Good location Great breakfast

Review 46:Very clean, comfy and peaceful with a great breakfast

Review 47:The walls are paper thin!

Review 48:Close to amazing restaurants and the town centre. Breakfast was well-prepared and delicious.

Review 49:Excellent accomadations. Erin was warm & welcoming, also full of knowledge about the history of the valley & wineries

Review 50:staff environment unique experience

Review 51:Other mid-afternoon snacks like cookies or sliced cheese would be nice. Bathroom plumbing needed slight adjusting (calcium buildup in the shower head, loose sink faucet handle).

Review 52:Erin's knowledge of the region. Walk to everything within St Helena downtown. Room housekeeping excellent. Upstairs porch very relaxing. We would return.

Review 53:This well-appointed and freshly updated Victorian B&B is located on a quiet Main St. within walking distance of what you want to visit in St. Helena. I hope you are as fortunate as we were to get a tutorial from Erin, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Napa wine and cuisine. Encountering her alone is worth the price of admission, but you can't help but enjoy the deluxe breakfast, romantic swing on the balcony, and decanted port (in our room) at Ambrose Bierce. Do a little research on the literary figure Ambrose Bierce, who has a connection with this house, to appreciate what you are getting into.

Review 54:Great location to visit various tasting rooms and wineries but also fantastic food options for restaurants. Chris, the inkeeper, recommend and booked us a restaurant for the first night and even took care of our wine shipping back home. Breakfast was delicious, you started your day with Mimosas and ended it with a glass of local wine you could enjoy on the Hollywood swing outside on the balcony. We will definitely be back!

Review 55:Stepping into the tub is a challenge because its rather high. Also - because our room was in the front and because it was unseasonably warm we needed to leave the windows open so the traffic was abit noisy in the evenings.

Review 56:Location was very convenient to everything. Breakfast was exceptional and the staff were very helpful.

Review 57:All of the tubs are huge (the good) but you must step up and over very high to access and I felt a bit unsafe getting in and out... (the bad)

Review 58:The breakfasts were wonderful! Mimosas, waffles, apple sausage, fresh breads... and really went out of the way to accommodate the vegans and gluten-free in our group with alternative choices

Review 59:Wine and Cheese at 5pm was very lacking. Poor wine and little or no cheese.

Review 60:Location was great! Breakfasts were very nice. Front porch and hot tub/spa were also good.

Review 61:Shower a little difficult to climb into --- but given that they were also jacuzzis, a good trade off

Review 62:Very close to Downtown. Very nice rooms and decor and Chris was great

Review 63:We had a wonderful stay. Would not change anything and can't wait to come again!

Review 64:Excellent location - close to vineyards and other attractions. Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms quiet and clean.

Review 65:Clean and light. Easy walk to downtown St. Helena. A house with a history.
