Reviews for Matjiesvlei Cottages
Review 1:We stayed in 'Die Stalle' unit. Which is well furnished with everything you need. We stayed only 2 nights which was a bit too short. It is possible to braai indoor and outdoor with garden and veranda furniture to relax.
Review 2:A more detailed A4 map or clearly signposted to set out exact location of the cottages would help greatly .
Review 3:The location, peacefulness allowed us to destress and relax .its is what we were seeking , being away from the city . The picnic area was peaceful and the swim in the river was enjoyed after the circular hike as well as the cool water of the reserviour .
Review 4:Beautiful environment in a lovingly restored cottage steeped in history. The quiet was almost overwhelming. It is a place of rest, true rest. One should definitely stay for longer than a day or two. This is a place to breathe and recover from surviving and to remember to exist. Some good books in the book shelf. I will be back very soon. Everything works (but if you want to be pampered in the lap of luxury, this is not for you - it is enough and more). It is for real people who want to rediscover tranquility and inner peace, the space to think and find joviality comfortable. (I am posting the following here because it seems that booking.com prefers to post the negative first even though the positive is overwhelming in this case). I would have liked to understand the light switches' sequence (some lights we could never switch on; perhaps they were blown) but it did not matter - the stars were awesome. Locking the gauze windows and doors were tricky despite a telephonic explanation. While I thought I had done my homework about sights and activities in the area, I would have liked a very comprehensive map of activities and destinations of some kind. Calitzdorp Tourism, if it exists, is of little use online. Nevertheless, get to Matjiesvlei! Get a life! Stay for a while. Remember who you were before money mattered more than surviving and sustaining a life as human.
Review 5:The access is unexpected but fascinating.dont be scared of dirt road in the mountain
Review 6:The place is fantastic. Peaceful and full of nature. Disconnected properly!
Review 7:Complete lack of welcome - never saw anyone. We were lucky to be let in by a neighbour. Beware of using Google Maps to find this place - it points you to the lodge's private picnic site on the Gamkarivier. The correct location of the cottages is that shown on Booking.com i.e. closer to the Kleinrivier tributary nearby.
Review 8:Remoteness, peace & quiet, safety (no security gates or barbed wire), no internet / phone reception, great value for money, private riverside picnic spot which belongs to the lodge only a two minute drive away. This was our favourite accommodation on our two week trip to SA. No shops nearby, so remember to bring supplies inc. firewood for braai.
Review 9:Nothing
Review 10:Raw beauty of the swart berg mountains surrounding the place. No cellphone reception was actually a great - time to rest. Solitude, decor of the cottage reflects the heart of the karoo beautifully.
Review 11:Nothing.
Review 12:Good bed and linen. Authentic feel of Bokwagter cottage. Undercover stoep/braai area with clean grid and braai utensils. Plenty of birdlife. Went for a refreshing morning run along the gravel road through the valley. Beautiful remote setting.
Review 13:We loved the quaintness of the cottage and the attention to detail re ensuring that it was an authentic 'Bokwagtershuis'. The facilities were great - we had EVERYTHING we needed, and more. We loved the sense of isolation in the valley and 'being away from it all'. It is a definitely a hidden gem!
Review 14:Located in the Swartberg about 7kms off the R62 on a dirt road, so it is really remote. Beautiful and peaceful setting. Its a traditional farmhouse with basic amenities, but comfortable enough.
Review 15:Would have loved to have stayed forever!
Review 16:Awesome weekend, thanks! Weather blessed us with early Summer, all our needs were met and then some, beds were warm, water was hot, stoep was awesome.. We have come to Middelplaas and Bokwagtershuis many times before, the valley is absolutely magical. We have come to regard the cottages as our own 'huisie' in the karoo.
Review 17:It is a rare treat to visit a place as beautiful as Matjiesvlei. The landscape is spectacular and if your wish is for beauty, peace, serenity, walking and botanising. This is the place to be. The architecture of the cottage I stayed in appeals immediately. Inside it is comfortable and furnished in old Cape style. The large hearth would be a cosy gem to gather at and one can imagine cosy family & friend ‘kuiers’ here. Though there is space outside for a braai I opted to enjoy the fresh farm butter, bobotie and roosterkoek delights I got at Smitswinkel along the R62. Another enjoyment was the very interesting booklet prepared re the natural and human settlement history of this tucked away valley. Reluctant to leave I lingered in my pj’s outside - early the morning after my one night stay. Next to me the silvery charm of a teenage olive grove; to my right the awesome spectacular folds of the Swartberg mountain being woken up by the rising sun, but my interest and intrigue were tickled greatly by a little spectacle unfolding in the a little grazing pasture in front of me. A flock of sheep emerged stiffly out of the riverine shrubbery only to be exasperated by a hyper young zebra who made dead sure he left not one dozy sheep standing still for even a second ! My last treat was the lovely hot shower, thawing out my dewy frozen feet. I left with a sigh, having loved my stay. I’ll be back.
Review 18:We arrived quite late and forgot to ask fo fire wood - there was no firewood by default at the cottage.
Review 19:- The location is just amazing. The farm occupies a valley surrounded by mountains on all sides. - Combination of unspoilt, amazing nature walks and being on a working farm. - The armosphere and privacy of Middelplaas.
Review 20:The location and the cottage were just great. Really rustic and so full of character. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit - even being cut off from all communication (mobile, 3G, etc) was just the cherry on top of the whole experience. The unit is excellently equipped, very neat and leaves you with access to everything that you could need. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Review 21:Peace & serenity with no internet & mobile interferences, absolute bliss away from the outside world
