Reviews for Fairmont Zimbali Resort
Review 1:No carpet by my bedside, tile cold at night/morning, no wine whatsoever in the bar fridge.
Review 2:The spacious rooms,The pool and the restaurant was great, friendly staff, great food and cocktails, and at some point they has to act us security protecting us from the monkeys wanting to steal our food! The food and view from Coral Tree restaurant,
Review 3:Our TV was not working when we got there. It was fixed and the very next day it was not working again. That happened all 3 days that we were there! :-( I didn't like the fact that the hotel was practically fully booked and we couldn't get a lounger to lie on around the pool. We asked if we could use one of the other pools at the resort and was told we were not allowed to, only the other pool at the beach club, but that was just as jam packed with families who had little kids. It seemed like the home owners were using the Main hotel pool too. I don't think that should be allowed in peak season. Hotel guests should get first priority.
Review 4:The décor in the room was lovely and the sleeping pillows were the best. The hotel and surroundings, including the gardens are well kept and very clean. Food was great.
Review 5:we asked for Bovril or marmite at breakfast. there was none and the woman in charge had no idea what this was. she eventually found some and then asked if we could explain what it was. 5 star? I think not. staff have no proper training. they are mostly clueless. toilet in reception area was filthy.
Review 6:bedroom was great and bed very comfy. pool lovely and large
Review 7:The layout of the hotel room, with the bathroom as open plan was not very "user-friendly"
Review 8:The location was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful
Review 9:Breakfast was very disappointing for such a good hotel and we did have issues with breakfast cost but the manager did sort out after a heavy debate.
Review 10:The hotel is located in a beautiful spot. Rooms are of a very high standard.
Review 11:waiting 3 days for poor reception staff to arrange for the TV to be replaced unedible taco the 2nd day at Ayoba
Review 12:The location, the restaurants on the property - great cuisine, the beach club, the spa
Review 13:Not welcomed well, I was told to move my car out of the way because Dr Nkosazan Dlamini Zuma came behind me and I was helped to check in later . I was not impressed at all. Instead they told me if king Zwelithini comes in it's even worse as if they wete justifying their actions . I felt angry because I also paid so I deserve vip treatment also and this was happening in front of my kids.
Review 14:Amazing ocean view and tranquillity. The spa was great also.
Review 15:These days we should not have to accept such poor WIFI especially in a hotel of this calibre. WIFI was snail pace at best but was mainly non existent. I guess it's easy to state free wifi when there is none....
Review 16:The beach club cafe staff and menu saved the bitter after taste of such expensive breakfast and dinner buffets.
Review 17:1) WiFi didn't work the whole week, given poor excuse each day. 2) not enough good dining open before 18:30, which is late for our young children 3) Child facility is dirty with unhappy staff 4) balcony was never cleaned properly
Review 18:1) Most of the staff very helpful 2) wssnt very busy which was great with the kids. 3) pool areas very nice
Review 19:The room did not look like the room on your website (or even close), the room was dirty on check-in, no working wifi for 2/3 stay, no cellular signal, no swimming beach.
Review 20:The staff had good attitudes even when dealing with complaints.
Review 21:loud stuff in the morning for room service , house keeping and bar checking for a 5 star hotel I expected super clean room .my rope had a hole broken furniture .......list goes on pls keep the standard hight it a beautiful place .
Review 22:Bed was comfortable and beautiful views from the room.
Review 23:On celebrating our special occasion we chose the Fairmont Zimbali Resort. Coming from Switzerland where we are spoilt with the Alps, lakes but unfortunately no Sea, so we chose this venue to celebrate this memorable occasion, which comes once in a lifetime. On arrival we were promptly checked in an thank the staff for the welcome drink, rose petals an candles to welcome us.Unfortunately this is where it ends, as from there it's all downhill. One our first day, we returned to find cosmetics, on lotion on our balcony, and was advised that it was the monkeys, which we found a bit peculiar. In addition although one books a seaview room with balcony, you are unable to leave the balcony doors open as the monkeys are a real nuisance, and can be quite aggressive. When the rooms are cleaned by the cleaners, our towels were removed and on both days, it was not replaced, taking housekeeping 35 mins to replace after 2 calls. The worst is the cockroaches!!! On the 1st evening I saw a cockroach killed it and flushed it down the toilet thinking it was perhaps just an unfortunate incident. On the 2nd night I woke up at 2 am and there were 3 cockroaches in our bedroom and 4 in the toilet area. After this I could not fall asleep as we had our open luggage on the floor as we were due to checkout in the morning, and knowing we had all these cockroaches running around. When quest spend over R4600.00 on 2 nights accommodation the last thing you expect is this!As for the breakfast, we went down to the breakfast restaurant an didn't bother as it looked greasy and very limited offerings for R205p/p. Would we recommend this hotel no anyone else? Definitely NOT as you don't get what you pay for, and I for one do not enjoy myself when you have cockroaches running around the room. Last but not least, you are unable to swim on the beach as it has no shark nets. I believe the hotel is over rated, and now wish we had stayed at the Beverley Hills in Umhlanga for the same...
Review 24:The politeness of the staff, during checkin who assisted with booking, due to communication of dates reserved, which was promptly addressed with Booking.com and Fairmont Zimbali
Review 25:Although the staff were friendly and attentive as we arrived 30 minutes before checking in time;we waited almost two and a half hours for our room to be ready. This only as we had to chase different staff members at reception. Other than the initial impression and delay, our stay was memorable.
Review 26:our room had not been cleaned by 1.30 on two days out of 5. Also no face cloths twice and shortage of shampoo.
Review 27:The service from reception and concierge. Also service at the golf club was exceptional. Fantastic golf course.
Review 28:The room did not have "do not disturb" signs, which meant that there was quite a lot of staff knocking on the door etc. The parking and / or valet was time consuming.
Review 29:Staff at reception at coming in didnt give me my free breakfast nor followed up with me. On leaving i was also billed for a can i didnt take.. It was my word against theirs and I gave them the benefit and paid for something i didnt take from the fridge. Staff also didnt clean the room on time
Review 30:Location
Review 31:The staff was a little confused after we upgraded, but everything was sorted out at the end
Review 32:The location is amazing, and the food, the room was amazing
Review 33:Late check-in; disorganized staff; upgrade to a room (which was worse than what we had booked); stained pillows; torn cushions on chairs; troubles upon check-out (over-charging). Not worth the money and certainly not Fairmont quality.
Review 34:The food was good, especially at the Mexican pool bar.
Review 35:cleanliness of rooms, housekeeping had to be constantly reminded to clean, they did not wipe surfaces that were dirty, did not clean the floor satisfactorily.
Review 36:friendly and helpful staff, world class facilities
Review 37:The junior suite I booked said sea view, when we arrived we were told limited sea view Our sliding door lock was broken and we had to get a repairman in to fix it.
Review 38:Wonderful resort, everything you need, good restaurants.
Review 39:There was an unpleasant smell as I entered the room and I later established that it was the shower. Black mould hadn't been cleaned from the silicone at the bottom of the shower and I pointed this out to housekeeping. They responded immediately and the smell was gone soon after.
Review 40:The hotel was in the most beautiful setting with spectacular views to the ocean. The food was excellent and the staff attentive and friendly.
Review 41:AC in the room was dripping first night and was not fixed. Reported it Saturday evening, and a technician can but the problem was not corrected, over the next 2 days again Tech staff can and still this issue was not fixed. ?
Review 42:All was good, had a nice time.
Review 43:i was very dissapointed with house keeping, considering that the hotel was 5star.on our first night we noticed that the bathroom had water on the floor and thought there was spillage, the following day, after room service had cleaned the room, the same had happened. the room was smelling of urine and the fact that there was no airfreshner did not help the situation at all. house keeping staff should have known that there was an issue as they are the first to pick up on any faults (i would expect), and we clearly put towels on the floor as there was water every morning when we woke up. but instead of reporting the staff simply wiped the floors. we also did not have a safe in our room on arrival whereas there was a note that clearly stated that valuables need to be locked in the safe, we contacted reception and waited 20mins before calling again, still we did not get any safe delivered and eventually went for a walk, 30min later. we came across the technician that was delivering our safe only leaving one of the lodges, when we were on our walk aready. we called room service on day 2 for replenishment of our minibar as we had drank some beverages, this was brought , but on day 3 again we had to order. isnt the minibar managed daily? i dont know, but it surely wasnt managed in our room.
Review 44:the hotel had very freindly people and the rooms were nicely situated for a beautiful view of the see. the restauant OSA was quite impressive with their meals. we were blown away.
Review 45:Room to room dialing did not work. Aircon difficult to adjust - room was far too cold.
Review 46:Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful views. Very spacious rooms.
Review 47:Breakfast although paid in advance had a bill including what you had paid making you wonder if you would be double charged. The hotel did not seem to understand this. Options for breakfast not wide enough. Bacon especially all the fatty part. Booking.com gave me a price. When I got to the hotel was charged an extra for hotel tax which was not mentioned on the site.
Review 48:Experience was average.
Review 49:Speed point at check in was not working- was annoying having to wait after such a long drive. We had to wait for a while to be seated for breakfast coz dining area was packed.
Review 50:Bedroom was nice and spacious. Bed very comfortable. Delicious breakfast with a lot of variety. Pool area was wonderful
Review 51:bar services just open your room anytime ,with out getting any answer,
Review 52:the manager sam was amazing, the spar its world class, breakfeast not to bad ,the chef made our breakfeast very enjoyable.
Review 53:Perhaps the shower to have instructions as I was afraid to force turn it on.
Review 54:the service was excellent as well as organised. Felt safe and had and uninterrupted stay.
Review 55:It took 18 hours before housekeeping responded to my broken door report. It took 4 hours for them to bring us extra cups. Either Housekeeping was very poorly resourced for a long weekend or their service is just poor. I had a poor Check-in and Check out experience. Breakfast rate quoted to me by Booking.com was refuted by Hotel. I was charged extra, refused to pay. But hotel conceded in the end.
Review 56:The negative experiences outweighed the positive, but I liked the Breakfasts, beach on the door step & the Bikes. And my kids liked that they had all TV channels. Concierge were also quite helpful.
Review 57:Something was strange about the cocktails this time around. We both broke out in itchy hives after a Cosmo. Strange.
Review 58:Pretty much the same reliable stay you can expect from Zimbali. Great food. Great ambience.
Review 59:Cold water on Saturday night around 9h30 when we wanted to take a bath and sheets not changed regardless of how much dirty they were
Review 60:The place is beautiful
Review 61:The staff service was very slow, ask numeress times for bathroom stuff and wasn't given it. Had to call a few times to remind them. Also room was only ready at 3 instead of 2. Towels had marks on it, indicating not being cleaned properly
Review 62:The venue, the view
Review 63:Aircon unit is located right behind the bed headboard (on the outside) and the noise and fibration kept us awake all night. Condensation from aircon inside drips all the time on floor between bedroom and path leading to bathroom. Floor leading to our room filthy as floors round swimming pool an in Bite. Neighbours put used dishes out which have not been removed for 2 x days!
Review 64:Friendly staff
Review 65:The Laundry service was below standard They took 1 hour to apparently press my mother's dress and we were late for a wedding and when the dress finally arrived it was still wrinkled we had to iron it ourselves in a rush.
Review 66:It felt like being on an amazing and peaceful island Everything is beautiful and the service is excellent
Review 67:Rooms could do with a deep cleaning, and the cushions on the pool lounges were grubby.
Review 68:Tranquility, and the friendliest staff. The visit to the spa was heavenly
Review 69:Some of the rooms are anything but 5star. We got a room that had a rusty old fridge and the bathroom was also rusty. Hotel replaced the fridge after I complained about it.
Review 70:The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Excellent service. We were upgraded to a junior suite when we expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the room.
Review 71:The price of food is not justified is way too high since there is mall with variety of food just 5km away from the place. So they need to review their food pricing.
Review 72:The location is good as it gives you a relaxation away from busy city life
Review 73:There was no bubble bath.
Review 74:The room was great. The window couch was perfect and the curtains kept the room lovely and dark, even during the day... The bathroom and bedroom setup was lovely. The room was spacious and we enjoyed all the space there was on offer :) I like the closet and toilet setup. Honestly, The room was 5 star. Spent most of the day just in bed. Which was big and comfy. So happy :)
Review 75:Bicycles poorly maintained. Most had punctures. One had gears stuck inrear wheel spokes. The cycles were booked twice but could not use them.Problem was not dealt with satsifactorily by 2 members at reception.Manager had to be called in to resolve (Perl), which she did adequatelyOn arrivel reception staff not friendly, strangely enough friendly when booking out. this has been my experience on both the ocassions i have stayed over.
Review 76:Meals at the Coral tree were excellent althought some of the food wascold. Just need tto ensure food is kept warm. Staff at all thefacilities were attentive and friendly.
Review 77:There is an office next to reception marketing Zimbali. The marketing is in your face and almost too aggressive, it needs to be toned down.
Review 78:Location Cuisine
Review 79:Ordered room service with reception who was to place the order with the kitchen . Almost a hour later , I followed up and the order was not placed . The children were famished by the time food had arrived.
Review 80:The staff were all friendly but some were exceptionally fantastic . A few remembered our names during our stay and went out of their way to greet our family by our names.
Review 81:There were a few eye raising moments: at check in we were only half of our party was checked in despite having 1 booking and also additional holds for "extras" put on our card without explaination that it was optional. Upon arrival one of the rooms looked like it had not been freshly cleaned (balcony floor requested to be cleaned). Throughout the stay we waited quite a while for things that we asked for...despite asking for a cot with our booking we had to ask twice...waiting for porters to transport baggage...rooms not being replenished with towels despite following the hotel instructions...finding that the robes were worn prior and not replaced (fresh smell of perfume)...milk not being supplied daily. Majority of check in and housekeeping staff did not seem adequately trained for 5 star hotel. Couples massage felt rushed and short despite arriving on time.
Review 82:The location was the best thing about the property. Also the property is well maintained (pool, restaurants, outside communal areas, restaurant areas etc). Overall this is what we expected and we were happy with that. Food at the restaurants were fantastic (except for having a rice pudding served cold and some ingredients missing from the Breakfast Bunny). Staff at check out (Portia at the front desk and the parking attendants especially) were friendly and awesome.
Review 83:The air con in our room 3020 was extremely noisy and did interrupt our sleep. The monkeys also caused an issue forcing us to close the doors and not fully enjoy the ocean view and sounds.
Review 84:The most comfortable bed I've ever slept on.....peaceful surroundings and a wide range of restaurants to choose from.
Review 85:Rooms needed a good clean - was not 5* in terms of cleanliness. Shower leaked. These would have been fine except that we found a cockroach in the hot choc that was served to us. Besides apologizing, not much else was done by management to stop us from leaving with a bad taste in our mouth!!
Review 86:Location - stunning views Front desk were friendly and professional
Review 87:The neighbors' empty plates stood in the hallway all day every day and when the wind came up the entire hallway was scattered with their garbage. The room's coffee and bottled water supplies were never replenished during the 4 day stay. The TV/channels came and went over the weekend, meaning we had only selected or no channels throughout the stay. Didn't pick up any Wifi access in the room.
Review 88:The Garden Villas are quite nice, spacious rooms, nice bathrooms. Well equipped and good for peace and quiet. Rooms are cleaned daily, but at random times. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Plenty of food selections available at the resort.
Review 89:The Wifi in the Garden Suites was not accessible and reception was not able to help. further the TV did not have all the channels and again help was not forthcoming.
Review 90:A nice quiet area and very relaxed.
Review 91:Excellent service all round. Every single staff member was friendly, helpful and efficient and went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional and comfortable.
Review 92:Just our room that was not cleaned. We left at 09:30am and when returning at about 4pm the room was still not cleaned
Review 93:Staff very efficient and friendly.
Review 94:Ayoba restaurant , really needs to beef up on its culinary skills. the food was average , bland in fact. The meals that we ordered lacked in flavour and cost a fortune , which we have no problem paying for if it tastes good. This experience was the total opposite of both of our experiences at Coral Fig Tree as well as OSA.
Review 95:We loved the entire setting of the hotel. the staff were super friendly . The facilities were excellent.
Review 96:Poorly designed rooms. Toilet area filthy. Stained toilet seat and dirty floor not acceptable for any hotel let alone a hotel of the supposed stature of Zimbali
Review 97:Gugu at reception when we checked in was the most unhelpful and rude person. Extreamly poor to be the first point of contact. Room still had June TV guide in it and mini bar was empty.
Review 98:Breakfast and supper was delicious - very good choice of options.
Review 99:The room needed maintenance and for someone to pay attention to detail. Eg the curtain hooks were off the rails, the drainage of one of the washbasins was poor
Review 100:The warm welcome and excellent hospitality
Review 101:Some of the facilities in our room weren't working (toilet flush), the shower gushed water into the bathroom soaking the floor and the room smelt fusty when we arrived.
Review 102:The location is stunning and the hotel looks fantastic from the outside. The staff were incredibly attentive and made our stay very pleasant.
Review 103:The pillows were a little formless - compressing into nothing. Afew foam pillows might be nice. Who ever gets pillows right?
Review 104:Felt welcomed and valued. No request or need rebuffed - even room service was a pleasure to talk to.
Review 105:The hotel staff were immediately friendly giving us complimentary drinks at reception. When I got up to the room it was amazing, clean, well organized and had an exceptional view. The room service was 24 hours and we had everything at our finger tips
Review 106:The service at 31 degree bar was shocking. We waited 20min before somebody even acknowledged us. The lead time to get a simple tea was too long. I won't recommend this to anybody. Overall I just feel that the staff are not friendly not even at breakfast, I had to signal somebody to request a cup of tea. I'm not impressed at all.
Review 107:I loved the food at osa. Was brilliant
Review 108:We could hear the toilet next door flushimg and filling up. Made a huge sound. Not nice
Review 109:The staff set out the words happy birthday in rose petals for my wife was a lovely touch
Review 110:Lack of advance communication regarding an event that impacted the quality of our stay regarding access to facilities. Perhaps marketing and comms dept could have handled this better.
Review 111:Overall a 5 star hotel experience but what we liked the most was how our complaints were handled. Professionally, gracefully and acted upon swiftly to our satisfaction. Will be back
Review 112:Check in was a bit hit & miss & there didn't seem to be a fine dining restaurant for adults. The Coral Tree only did a help yourself buffet dinner on the night we were there & it was full of children running about. Not what we were looking for at all & made me wonder why we had bothered to get changed.
Review 113:Room
Review 114:Please change the pillows - not comfortable
Review 115:friendly staff, very clean, ideal location, peaceful and tranquil, modern finishing's, meals are tasty and value for money
Review 116:Room very outdated compared to competition. Poor maintenance and cleaning - stained tiles and ceiling in shower (mould), hand shower coming off the wall, loose hinges.
Review 117:Staff very friendly, professional and accommodating.
Review 118:Parking, maintenance and cleanliness is a disgrace for such a fine worldwide establishment. Go to room 3007 Look at the shower wall and the glass separating the bathroom from the entrace.
Review 119:Great people at all restaurants and bars!
Review 120:Once again false advertising, Paid more than $400.00 per night for a sea-view room that was really nice on the brochure but all we got was a mosquito invested room next to a stream and on the horizon you could see the ocean over the brush (if you stood on your toes). Room door did not close, reported it to the concierge but still wasn't fixed after the weekend. I booked a restaurant on the 3rd level in the morning and of-course in the evening they knew nothing about it. Balcony was dirty and the outside chairs were to dusty to sit on. Over priced and over marketed.
Review 121:Hotel is pretty and staff are friendly in most instances.
Review 122:1- restaurant staff need more training as to how a 5 star hotel operate and how to treat guests 2 - upon arrival, there was no orientation - at a 5 star hotel one is received with a client liason officer to orientate on the facilities WITH SMILE ON THEIR FACES 3- the outside rooms - as a 5* u should have 24hr staff checking the premises. I was woken up by monkeys finding food on plates left outside.
Review 123:The location only Facilities
Review 124:I didn't like the Indian buffet. I needs improvement. Otherwise our stay was excellent as always.
Review 125:Zimbali is a beautiful tranquil place if u want to get out of the city and relax. The service is excellent all round and the staff is attentive to all ur needs. The food is Excellent.
Review 126:I had booked with you guys and was extremely disappointed when I called to confirm all in order for my arrival and was told there was no booking. Although I gave them the booking code. Very very disapointing
Review 127:The staff were so helpful and friendly, the pools were fantastic. My boyfriend and I especially like taking a trip to the lodge for a day at the pool there.
Review 128:The food was as amazing as the rest of the place, we had an issue of the buffet food being cold. The food should have been more tastier.
Review 129:Zimbali was amazing, the suite was amazing, the pools, the service, the staff were very polite which is not common these days, the whole of resort was just amazing. We had the best honeymoon ever at Zimbali.
Review 130:- Original room was in a very bad condition(smelly bathroom, broken fixtures and fittings, dirty room) - Front desk service was very poor - Baby sterilizer taken from room - Terrible value for money - Should not be a 5 Star resort
Review 131:Mattresses need to be changed. There were a couple of towel hooks etc that were missing or hanging on a thread On going Maintenance of paramount importance
Review 132:The overall experience was luxurious and in beautiful surroundings.Friendly helpful staff
Review 133:The food and drinks were overpriced We had to pay for wifi in a 5 star hotel No complimentary transport to nearby sites
Review 134:The view from the rooms was magical!
Review 135:The construction at the hotel, not enough parking space. Lazy cleaning staff, rude towards guests.
Review 136:Catering staff, reception staff, they made feel at home.
Review 137:Where do I begin.... 1. We had booked 2 rooms and upgraded 1 of the rooms to a suite. The suite had a damp musty smell with terrible odours emanating from the sinks in the bathroom to the drain in the shower. Guest services are useless so don't even bother calling them from your room phone as they take forever to get things done. I had to eventually get a hold of room services myself for them to sort out the room. So guess what, all they did was drop a few pellets into the drains and handed us an air freshner bottle to continue spraying in the room for the damp smell to go away. We eventually were fed up of the stench in the room and requested to be moved. We were now inconvenienced as we had to repack to move to another floor with NO assistance from staff nor an apology from management. The 2nd suite we were moved to was a bit better however also had a terrible stench of rotten fish left over in the fridge which goes to show housekeeping are not taking their job seriously. So we once again contacted guest services and once again got no joy. Eventually 45 minutes later someone arrived to remove the fridge. 2. Breakfast at BBC - staff messed up the order...drinks arrived after breakfast was served... 3. Rooms had no 'do not disturb' boards and as a result housekeeping barge into your room unannounced. This was brought to managements attention however they give you this 'dumb' look as though something is wrong with you. 4. The concierge never had a clue on anything you asked them. They had to always ask each other before they could give you any answer. My final comment - some of the staff need serious training on customer service!!!
Review 138:The location and general ambience of the hotel is awesome. One thing is for certain, is that you do not feel as though you are still in Durban.
Review 139:I didn't enjoy the room as much as I expected. The room has a cold feel. The tiles are too much in the room. The room almost feels like you are at Breakers Resort. For the price and the 6 star claim, the Interior Decorators could have done more. This is ito fixtures and fittings and decor.
Review 140:I liked the reception and pool area.
Review 141:That we couldnot afford to stay longer.
Review 142:1.Hotel is wonderfully and professionally designed with an excellent location and breathtaking views. 2.Service levels excellent in all areas from the golf course ,reception, dining, name it. 3.The food was excellent.
The Fine Print
Please note that there is construction taking place during weekdays on a property adjacent to the hotel.
