Reviews for Port Wine Guest House
Review 1:Some external maintenace work requires attention to ensure that their high standards are maintained.
Review 2:A superbly run and owner managed guest house--my third visit and we will definately return
Review 3:The staff could have been a bit more friendly. Considering we were the only guests on our first night. On our second night there was a second couple, but still we only ever saw the owner, he was quite pleasant. The room was sparse, in that there was no fridge and to plug the kettle in one had to put it on the floor under the cupboard.
Review 4:The breakfast and decor was superb.
Review 5:We stayed 2 nights and found it very peaceful and Pierre went out of his way to help. The breakfast was lovely with fresh fruit and home made apricot jam
Review 6:The room was very close to the breakfast room so guests having early breakfast can be a bit noisy. Wi-fi is rather slow, yet available free of charge so not really a complaint.
Review 7:The owners are running this B&B to the highest standards. Beautiful surroundings and service that is very attentive without being intrusive. A real gem of a place in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa,
Review 8:We stopped here overnight as we prefer small towns. The restored farmhouse is beautifully done, with very comfortable room. Ours had a tub only---no shower. Pierre is helpful and very business-like.
Review 9:Port Wine Guest House was recommended to us by fellow travelers, and we were extremely pleased with our stay. Lovely grounds, a very nice room, great breakfast, and walking distance to wine and port tastings. And, Pierre spent an hour or more providing us with ideas for our remaining two weeks of travel in S. Africa, and we were so pleased with his route and accommodation recommendations. Don't miss this great property on your travels on Route 62!!!
Review 10:Calitzdorp town. Described as a Victorian town but in reality it was shabby and we wouldn't have stopped had we not booked accommodation. Very limited choice of restaurants.
Review 11:The Port Wine Guest House was very pretty in a peaceful setting, nice pool and vine shaded terrace. Good breakfast with homemade museli and jams.
Review 12:This establishment is not as good as our earlier visits. It was very hot and the air conditioning was turned off as we went to bed. No honesty bar and no evening meal. Being a Sunday, it was difficult to find anything open even though it was only 7.00 pm.
Review 13:The location, near to the various wineries producing some of the best port in South Africa. Oldie world charm. Nice pool on a hot day.
Review 14:No changes since my first visit in 2001. Some refurbishment could help the place to come back to the top. cleaniness of the bath room could be much better (especially the shower). the landlords wife could be more friendly. Wifi only available in the lounge
Review 15:good breakfast, good mattress. Beautiful walk in the night under the southern hemisphere full of stars...
Review 16:The pillows on the beds were badly in need of replacement. The catch on our room door did not work and door kept opening unless locked. The sash window in our companions rooms did not stay open and had to be propped. Rooms were very hot.
Review 17:The garden and pool were quiet, welcoming and attractive. The off road parking was safe and secure. The old building is very beautiful.
Review 18:Lack of air-conidtioner in bedroom. Over-cooked bacon at breakfast!
Review 19:Delightful building, lovely furnishings, very comfortable room and adequate bathroom. Reasonable breakfast. Pretty gardens and pleasant pool. Short walk to Boplaas winery!
Review 20:Stayed one night en route from Plettenberg Bay to Cape Town. Excellent find. Clean & comfortable, and breakfast was superb. Calitzdorp is an interesting little town, the centre of SA's port industry, and its wineries are well worth a visit for a tasting. Host Pierre gave us useful recommendations for dinner (Die Handelshuis - very good), and for an amazing scenic drive the following day through Seweweekspoort. Don't miss it! All in all, a great stopover.
Review 21:Nothing!
Review 22:The public areas, including the terrace and sitting room, were very comfortable and nothing was too much trouble for the owner. The breakfast consisted of homemade musli and jams (amongst other options) and a hot meal - all delicious.
Review 23:I am in my eighties,my wife in her seventies but we were given a room which had no shower in the bathroom. It is very difficult if not dangerous for us to climb out of a bath.
Review 24:Lovely old building & furniture, garden, outdoor area & pool.
Review 25:The Port Wine Guest House is a very cosy place with a nice atmosphere. Pierre is a lovely host, giving us good advice on what to do in and around Calitzdorp. Breakfast is really good. We'll come again!
Review 26:Firstly my booking came back wrong unfortunately I didn't check so we landed up with two twins instead of a double and a twin. The toilet didn't flush properly and our shower wasn't cleaned properly.
Review 27:Beautiful gardens, good breakfast.
Review 28:Calitzdorp is OK but there are nicer places, just not at the right place for an overnight stop for us.
Review 29:Perfectly located for an overnight stop east from Cape Town towards Graaf-Reinet. Hotel location is away from hustle and bustle of centre. Portuguese restaurant they recommend. The breakfast.
Review 30:Disappointed that the French organist had relocated. The evening organ recital was one of the main reasons for our visit.
Review 31:Very good location. Ambient atmosphere and comfortable room. Breakfast was excellent and the host was very friendly and helpful. Dining at the Handelshuis was a very good experience.
Review 32:No wifi or tv in bedroom.
Review 33:It had an old world feel, with log fires in the reception area and breakfast room. The bedroom was comfortable with four poster beds. Breakfast was excellent. It was within easy walking distance of 2 excellent wineries.
Review 34:- Cockroach in bathroom - WiFi only in common Lobby - no TV in room. - Calitzdorp in general is not tourist-friendly, no vegetarian eating options
Review 35:Calitzdorp is a small town, famous for its Port Wine. This Hotel is the best place to stay when in town. - Nice cozy backyard & room. Historic backdrop - Bathtub in Bathroom. Heaters in room. - Hosts offer free sample of port wine for the guests - The owners are professional (though not as forthcomingly friendly as typical in South Africa) - Standard Breakfast options are offered
Review 36:Maybe the beds were a bit noise. But that was also charming
Review 37:The feelings you were in another era. But with comfort.
Review 38:The room had no air conditioning and it was very warm weather

Review 65:Well equipped room. Attractive veranda. Complimentary port. Excellent breakfast. Garden
Review 66:The rooms were so cool and the swimming pool was very welcome. Nice safe stay and walk to restaurant in evening.
Review 67:Very friendly patron, excellent breakfast , beautiful garden and pool
Review 68:The view of the vineyard from our window. Homemade jam and marmalade. The best cooked tomatoes in South africa.
Review 69:Really cute and cozy guesthouse with a beautiful garden. Conveniently located near the main port producing wineries.
Review 70:Pierre is a fine host the conversation with Pierre regarding Japie's eggs. Tasty breakfast
Review 71:Not really close to Main Street for restaurants. Pierre was efficient but not as friendly as some hosts.
Review 72:Good off street parking.
Review 73:too quiet
Review 74:quiet
Review 75:No TV in Room No wifi
Review 76:Friendly Host Good Breakfast
Review 77:Everything from the moment we arrived till the time we left. Nothing wastoo much trouble. Information was freely given and accurate.
Review 78:Wifi only in main lounge.
Review 79:Pierre kept the fire going for us in the main lounge. The quality of items served at breakfast was excellent. They make their own muesli and jams! However a full English breakfast was offered too.
Review 80:We shoud have checked in advance - there are no longer organ recitals at the Durch reform church as the organist has moved on. This was the reason for our visit.
Review 81:Lovely pool. Good location. Very quiet place. The best homemade granola I have ever eaten. One place to eat out - Die Handelshuis which was wonderful. Great people
Review 82:This is a guest house with an warm and friendly atmosphere. We have now visited the house for the second time, and we are very satisfied. Though, two years ago there were still a restaurant in the house that served great Karoo lamb. We miss the restaurant!
Review 83:Thought the recommended cleaning tip for an overnight stay was a little high at ZAR 150.00
Review 84:Lovely location in a quiet part of town. Beautiful grounds and clean pool. Spacious room. Very knowledgeable host, who happily chatted through our plans and gave an excellent recommendation for dinner.
Review 85:Nothing. When it is very hot the rooms can probably become a bit uncomfortable, not airy enough.
Review 86:This historic guesthouse is a treat. Though the rooms are not too big, they have an efficient lay out. The shadowy garden, the nice pool and the lounge room with comfortable chairs makes it a very nice place for a stop over. Boplaas winery is across the street and several restaurants are in walking distance. The owner Pierre is very helpful.
Review 87:- would not recommend for families with young children - No A-C, which can make it quite hot (be prepared)
Review 88:- great surroundings - great for couples - spacious rooms - good value for money BB
Review 89:The room was very hot and dimly lit. The four poster bed completely obscures the ceiling fan. No air con! The toilet paper was extremely poor. Bed was two singles pushed together !
Review 90:Bath towels were the best of previous four accommodations.. Great breakfast. Lovely pool and garden.
Review 91:Whilst Calitzdorp isnt exactly a place where you need to be central. The Port Wine House was perfectly located within walking distance of the Port Cellar of Boplaas (which is fantatstic). Pierre was very helpful and knowledgeable.
Review 92:Nothing at all
Review 93:What a special place Port Wine Guest House is. Pierre is a most hospitable host and his local knowledge (from the organ recital to the KK&K dates) has no limits. The building is welcoming and full of character, the rooms huge, clean and well appointed with complimentary port whilst the breakfast was one of the best I have had in any establishment. There are great restaurants within easy walking distance of the lodge and plenty of secure off-street parking. I cannot recommend it highly enough
Review 94:the owner Pierre seriously la cks social skills. He was downright rude from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. It felt like being at boot camp, all guests were walking on egg shells. Never experienced something like this in my life! For this reason I do not recommend it, if being in the hospitality business irritates him that is his problem and he should move on.
Review 95:manor house and gardens attractive and spotless
Review 96:We had a fantastic stay at the Portwine guest house and Pierre was the most attentive host who could not have done more for us.. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast which was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. We would go back any time and highly recommend this guest house.
Review 97:The carpark entrance was very narrow but as this was an older property it was unavoidable.
Review 98:The room was tastefully designed. The communal rooms had a lovely fire (it was winter and very cold). The hosts were very helpful with local information
Review 99:Nothing, good value for money.
Review 100:Friendly guest house, relaxed, easy to walk into village. Excellent home made muesli for breakfast as well as full cooked. Good stop-off point on Route 62, and would not have missed the organ recital at 6pm most eves in the church!
Review 101:To be honest, this accommodation ticked all the right boxes, highlyrecommended.
Review 102:We loved the size of the bed we slept in, and the hospitality of thehost was amazing.
Review 103:Do not be put off by the apparent cool reception by Pierre. Get to know him as he is an engaging character - extremely efficient - and a good raconteur. His wife, who we did not meet, is obviously an outstanding cook as was evidenced by the hearty meal we enjoyed when we stayed. Good value and good entertainment!
Review 104:Rooms a little small and airless.
Review 105:Good location in the centre of Calizdorp. Lovely garden and pool. Excellent breakfast and dinner in the guest house.
Review 106:A fridge is a modern requirement these days especially where it is hot!
Review 107:Very welcoming host who was easy to talk to and who was happy to answer any queries. Lovely environment. Pleasant evening meal under the vines.
Review 108:Racist and sociopahic tendencies of owner. He did however not realisethat I understood Afrikaans and could hence hear what he said to hisblack staff and how he did it. Pity, because the hotel itself isreally nice.
Review 109:Location Pool Gardens
Review 110:The rooms, the garden and pool, the setting, the price and most emphatically the dinner and the breakfast. We were directed to the magnificient local church where we had a superb personal organ recital. Walking distance to the Boplaas winery with premier SA brandy and port production and sales. I cannot recommend too much
Review 111:no TV, safe or fridge calitzdorp is not really worth stopping by, just driving by while on teh route 62 to George (don't stop before that to sleep!)
Review 112:secure premises, the guesthouse is right in front of one of the most famous port wineries of the area
Review 113:Host not very friendly. Mattress not of good quality.
Review 114:Breakfast very good
Review 115:Breakfast
Review 116:Wifi only in lounge & dining room
Review 117:Comfortable room, good location
Review 118:Loved the warm welcome, location, the restaurant down the road, and the beautiful town.
Review 119:Pierre and Marina are wonderful hosts and make you feel very welcome
