Reviews for The Margate Resort

Review 1:The bagels at breakfast weren't fresh to my mind, so they had to be toasted. In the summer this probably won't be an issue (it was the first week in Jan and there were very few guests).

Review 2:The lakeside location was beautiful, and the room was comfortable. The shower had a good flow of water and there were plenty of pillows. We didn't get to use the leisure facilities (indoor pool/gym/sauna etc) but they are good to have nonetheless. The tunnel linking the Lake Wing to the main building was a definite plus!

Review 3:Not a 'bad' experience but we found the breakfast to be somewhat lacking. Just a basic Continental with yogurt being the only protein. The toaster didn't work very well either. A definite bonus however is that it was open until 11 am. There are many great restaurants and cafes in Laconia/Gilford for a full breakfast if you'd like that instead.

Review 4:The location met our needs perfectly and would be great for anyone visiting the lakes or nearby ski areas. The lobby, still decorated for Christmas, is just beautiful and a perfect place to read and relax. Margate also has an indoor pool, many function rooms and a restaurant/bar. Bottom line ... we'd stay there again in a heartbeat!!

Review 5:Booking.com never lets you know if the facilities restaurant is closed for the season. Traveling on business, just want to check in and eat on premise, not have to go out.

Review 6:Nice place, must be great in the summer.

Review 7:We had to leave one day earlier as our daughter was sick and the personnel refused to reimburse us for one night. The room was not very clean... The breakfast was ok but there were no personnel in the room. Only shelf service.

Review 8:Location and view of the lake were nice

Review 9:Nothing too serious. As it was at the end of the season, the hall carpets were a little dirty and the room carpet needed to be replaced. Just normal wear and tear for a summer resort on the lake!

Review 10:The view. I had a lake view room and the sun rise was excellent.

Review 11:I didn't like how at first my room was "across thestreet"(the inn I believe it's called, behind shaws). All thepictures online give you a resort feeling and being close to the lake.It didn't state "across the street" when you book it. Sothe manager made me "upgrade" I don't see why I shouldhave to pay extra for what they advertise online!! Made me upset rightoff the bat.

Review 12:I love the lake being right there. I also loved the room, very clean. Also the price was very good for four nights. The cleaning people weresuper friendly, always saying hi when you walked by. But honestly thefront desk/manager weren't as friendly as them.

Review 13:no complaints

Review 14:Everything was great! Kids loved the pool, and I thought the breakfast was great. Good selection , everything was fresh and the room was CLEAN!

Review 15:There were 2 receptionist helping one customer in front of us when we went to check out. We waited for a while, and another couple showed up and cut in front of us, the receptionists knew that we were there before this couple but they still helped them without saying anything. We were very uncomfortable and insulted been treated this way. Will not go back to this hotel and not recommending to people who cares about courtesy.

Review 16:Nice location.

Review 17:The heating /cooling element in our room (403) was extremely noisey. When it would turn on, it sounded like a diesel engine so it would wake us up every time. If it had not been for this noise, the place was quiet!

Review 18:We had a lakeview room and the view was lovely. It was clean and well maintained.

Review 19:Dinner served in beach bar, they did not offer a gluten free option, so we had to eat elsewhere.

Review 20:Beautiful spot, our room overlooked the lake, very quiet, lovely room.

Review 21:The breakfast was very poor and for some reason had to use plastic cups plates and utensils, there is no need for that. The Restaurant was dark and in need of updating. The room was a great size and was clean however in need of updating

Review 22:The views round the lake were great and the reception staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 23:on the lake side wing would prefer locking lobby doors away from the main hotel for more security

Review 24:great set up on the lake with lake only steps away nice beach to swim at very nice tiki bar on the dock super nice staff nice boats to rent etc

Review 25:Mattresses were uncomfortable, rug had burn stains, very little provided in terms of complimentary personal use items such as toothpaste, lotions, and what was there had all been made in china. There was no microwave and they required a $50.00 charge authorization for "amenities" that I didn't use up front.

Review 26:The beach is nice

Review 27:Needs a update and microwave in rooms. Also hot tub on the "inn" side

Review 28:The resort was quite and when we needed service friendly staff member Tom was quick. Faiclites Were clean. Also close to town

Review 29:Did not like being in a building across the street from main building. Had to drive over for breakfast each am. Free breakfast was very limited and mediocre.

Review 30:Beds were very comfortable and room was clean.

Review 31:Well, the carpets will need replacing and I didn't really like the vinyl tile I the sink area, I realize it's hard to give it a clean feel to your feet. but the exhaust fan in the shower room was a refreshing change from most other places I've stayed which don't have any at all. Need more accessible outlets.

Review 32:The location was wonderful for the Lakes region and the place did have character.

Review 33:The pillow and bed were so soft that my wife and I were sore the 3 mornings we stayed. We brought our own wine, cheese and crackers to enjoy by the outdoor pool, but because they have a beach bar, you could not bring your own wine or food to any place but your room. The beach bar had a dock that was open to the public, It turned into a loud spot for people that were not from the hotel.

Review 34:Location was nice.

Review 35:The beds were terribly uncomfortable and all 3 of us agreed to that. A good night's sleep was not possible for any of us. Also, by 2015 the beds should have been upgraded to at least queen size. The maid cleaned fairly well and we appreciated that but the rug was never vacuumed. There should have been more hangers in the closet along with maybe another pillow. The handrail at the outside pool was not secure, very wobbly, and is a liability if someone should fall as my cousin almost did. The hall rugs need either cleaning or replacing, there are stains on the hall ceilings. I was one of the first people to stay at the Margate many years ago and am disappointed at how run down and not upgraded it has become.

Review 36:The beach front and tiki bar are a nice attraction. Very much liked the fitness area and the common computer. Did not get to visit the game room. The chlorine in the indoor pool seemed a bit overwhelming but it was very clean and laid out nicely.

Review 37:the INN is very outdated. our room smelled of disinfectant ,the floor by the sink was sticky, the tub drain did not work ( could not take a bath ) the shower worked fine, and you have to flush the toilet at least twice.

Review 38:excellent location

Review 39:The reception was very unfriendly. The air conditioner and the ventilator in the bathroom extremely loud. The bed creaked. All the platic plates etc. at breakfast a pure waste.

Review 40:The leisureness in the pavillon. There the girls were very nice.

Review 41:The bathroom had mold on the ceiling and in the shower. Mattress was totally split open. The springs were totally visible.

Review 42:There was a Keurig coffee maker and a nice size refrigerator.

Review 43:The beach/lake area was very comfortable and clean

Review 44:The outside bar area was awesome , I also enjoyed the entertainment they provide during the day on the patio bar!

Review 45:Did a mother, daughter vacation, and went to a concert.. Staff was so friendly and we had 2 nights reserved, was so fun and relaxing we called the office for another night..our room was already booked, but they had 3 other choices, went across and again , a great place, all the way around..

Review 46:Pay attention that Inn Building is located across the street, so not very convenient to access spa and indoor pool. Indoor pool was not clean enough (some hairs in the water) and nobody was preventing kids from jumping into the water and disturbing other people. Complimentary breakfast is very basic. We bought hot breakfast (for about $7 per person) and it was not tasty at all. Next day we did not go there at all.

Review 47:Great location. Comfortable enough. Near the lake. Not far from local attractions. Friendly staff.

Review 48:No bad experience, but my concern is with the bathtub and the fact there are no grab bars or bathmat in the tub, The tub was a bit slippery. Otherwise, we had a very good time and will return.

Review 49:The location and the comfortable bed.

Review 50:Didn't like the fact that no drinks or food could be brought to the beach-forced to buy from the beach gazebo. Food service slow and not much to choose from.

Review 51:Beautiful view of the lake from the room on the lakeview side. Very clean and comfortable room. Free continental brunch had a big selection of good food.

Review 52:The receptionist at the front desk was a bit abrupt when we first got there. We did arrive early on a motorcycle and asked if we could leave a bag there until our room was ready. She said there was no place to leave any luggage. We also had a problem finding our room. But once we were settled, everything was great.

Review 53:Our room was clean, comfortable and had a wonderful view of the lake. We ate dinner at the beachfront bar/grill at sunset, watching the sun go down over the far side of the lake. We only scheduled one night as we were touring different areas of the state and would recommend a minimum of 2 nights here.

Review 54:The fact that this place is on the lake. They have dining on the dock. You can relax on one of the many lounge chair already set up for you to enjoy. Very relaxing.

Review 55:Only apps at the outside bar first night because of lack of help in the kitchen. Poor planing and hiring on owners part.

Review 56:Location to highway and points of interest . best asset is the two Jennifers at the bar.

Review 57:The Margate gave all parking to wedding guests, not paying hotel guests. Elderly and all had to walk 1/4 mile to get to rooms all day Saturday.

Review 58:Indoor pool and sauna, location on water nice.

Review 59:I can only speak for what he and his girl missed. I always enjoyed Blackstones for a dinner every-time I was at the Margate which would be about 10 times yearly. It is nice and convenient to have a restaurant and full service bar readily available on-site. Surprised that there is not now.

Review 60:This was a reservation paid by me for my fiances 25 yr.old son and his girl. Recommended by me from my past use of the Margate, many years ago. They were quite happy, and impressed. It was an experience of a quality lodging establishment. And i always thought the best on Winnipesaukee.

Review 61:older, combined AC/heating units that blow cold air at the decibel level of an airplane. Heating in the first room didn't work at all. But the great staff put us in another room.

Review 62:room with views on the lake helpful and friendly staff pool very clean

Review 63:Games room closed. Tiny door to sauna Cold breakfast only - in winter would prefer a hot meal! Internet was very patchy.

Review 64:Friendly staff Clean rooms/ facilities Lovely lady working in the Bodyworks Café Nice big pool and big hot spa!

Review 65:The cable issues which prevented access to the TV. It was not the Margate's fault, but a small "good faith" compensation to reduce the bill would have been welcomed.

Review 66:Everything at The Margate was top notch. Michelle in the dining room was a gem.

Review 67:I know it was a buffet breakfast, but I have a problem with any and every hotel that uses disposable paper and plastic cutlery and crockery - the world cannot afford to be so profligate with its resources

Review 68:Good location for touring Weirs Beach, Lake Winnipesaukee and so on, and near an excellent T-Bones & Cactus Jack for evening meal

Review 69:Too pricey for the quality and I have an unexplained charge of $25.00 from them. Is it a hidden fee or something? Very unsatisfied with this hotel

Review 70:The view of the lake

Review 71:Wifi worked, then didnt, staff wasn't responsive in helping Rooms were old and dated and needed to be updated

Review 72:Price was reasonable Very centrally located for all our needs Was a ghost town during weekdays and packed on the weekend.

Review 73:We were booked in a room across the road from the main buildings even though the resort was almost empty. We asked for another room on the water side and were given a room on the lower level which really didn't appeal to me as it was right at ground level on the beach side and below ground on the other side. The toilet in the room had been replaced that day and there was a slight smell in the room. First the handle on the toilet was not attached properly and the toilet would not flush. Then the drain on the bath tub was closed and the water wouldn't drain. The shower curtain had feces on it - I'm assuming the tub was used to empty a plugged toilet, hence the new toilet. The floor had not been washed and showed signs of a toilet overflow. Even though they did give us a new room, the incident spoiled my opinion of the cleanliness of the hotel. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Review 74:The view of the bay was beautiful, nice beach, grounds were well kept, lots of parking, underground tunnel to main building useful when it rained.

Review 75:Trip lip going into the bathroom. No grab bar in the shower. Faucet water knobs rotation reversed between two sinks. Easy chair with no light. Lousy TV. .

Review 76:Central location. Price.

Review 77:In the rooms they have Kureg coffee makers which is very convenient, however they should also leave some tea bags for the people who do not drink coffee.

Review 78:Staff was very courteous. Continental breakfast had a lot to choose from. Our room was very clean.

Review 79:Had to go outside to get to the indoor pool. Could not get entrance to the pool area from the outside back door. Were not allowed to eat food at the poolside table, unless it was purchase at the Margate.

Review 80:The location, fresh water pool and hot tub. the locker rooms and showers. My room and maid service.

Review 81:What a lovely lake room and surroundings. Can't say when we 4 adults enjoyed an evening more. Staff was super, everyone we spoke with took time to talk. Can't wait to return.

Review 82:Wish the restaurant was open later in the evening. Got back to my room at (7pm) and it was closed.

Review 83:Comfortable room. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

Review 84:The property is tired. It needs a lot of updates. The rooms were not very clean either. :-/

Review 85:I liked the location of the Margate as well as the lakeside bar.

Review 86:We were sent across the street to a less desirable location, not on the lake or with lake views. And while walking to our room, we passed by the ice/vending room with mouse, alive and stuck in a trap. Then the room was less than clean and the vent/AC was full of what we could only imagine as mouse nests and secretions. Completely gross.

Review 87:The check in!! The man in charge when I checked in was incredibly rude, I've never experienced such attitude from someone working in hospitality. I stay in a lot of hotels but this is THEE worst experience I've had. The amount that was charged for this room was extremely inadequate for what was offered. I have no desire to request someone to stay here

Review 88:The check in clerk did not inform us as to where our room was. I had to ask the location of our room which was located across the street.

Review 89:Room was big enough, clean enough, and comfortable enough. Enjoyed the outdoor restaurant and bar and beach. Did not use any other facilities as it was only a one night stay.

Review 90:Rooms across the street alittle outdated but clean

Review 91:A group of friends came to go to a concert at meadowbrook. This hotel had a great location just a few miles from the venue. Wish we had stayed longer to enjoy the beach bar and beautiful location lakeside

Review 92:The bathroom shower curtain had black mold all over it. The toilet ran almost the entire time.

Review 93:The location and view! Having the bar/restaurant right there was also a huge plus! The indoor/outdoor pools & the fitness room!

Review 94:The main facility was very nice with a very nice location on the lake. Our rooms were across the street from main facility. Which was fine because we were only there for the night. If I were to stay longer next time I would book on the Lake side.

Review 95:The old linoleum floor in the room was filthy - my feet kept sticking to it like fly paper. The Keurig machine didn't work (it WAS plugged in and I own one so I know how to operate it). The front desk staff was really rude to me, I changed rooms the second night of my stay - and don't get me going, I was so pissed at their rudeness and making me wait until 4pm to enter the new room that had been booked - and paid for - months in advance - as I watched others in my party receive early check ins. It isn't family friendly - drunkards were outside hooting loudly at all hours while I tried to sleep. And don't get me going about the duck poop everywhere! And I mean Mallard ducks - ducks everywhere, poop all over the beach and lawn. We attended a wedding, we had to walk through high grass (and poop) to get to the tent. Considering what the wedding cost, the lawn should have been mowed beforehand. It was ridiculously priced for a "motel". The wedding was beautiful - but I attribute that to the bride's exquisite taste, selecting stunning flowers and displays. Way way overpriced for what you get.

Review 96:Lake view Location Breakfast

Review 97:Enjoyed having the outside beach bar and food area. Food was very good and reasonable. The staff at the beach bar was very socialable and a tentative. Will return again

Review 98:The rooms were a bit dated...carpets need to be cleaned or replaced. We also had some little bugs in our bathroom sink. Beds were old and creaked like they were old.

Review 99:You cannot beat the view from the Lake building. Great beach with a lot of activity. Nice sized swimming pool and hot tub. Centrally located to Weirs Beach and other nearby attractions.

Review 100:Easy to locate late at night after the concert my friend and I attended. Beautiful view of the lake out the rear sliding doors. Wished I had booked another night or two!

Review 101:The hot breakfast could have been included I didn't like that I had to pay $15 for my girlfriend and I to have some eggs and sausage with our continental breakfast! The breakfast was good I don't think it was worth the $15 though. I've stayed at many hotels and they have the same breakfast included with the stay hopefully next year when we come back there can be a change made to this!

Review 102:Nice room set up! Liked being able to park right outside room and walking distance to a nice beach and the bar at the beach was awesome loved Jennifer she was an amazing bartender! She made good recommendations, and the burger and scallops we ordered were very good! We got the black and blue burger and I enjoyed it a lot! As well as the bacon wrapped scallops!!Nice view outside back door! Beautiful view of the sunset on the beach! Great location close to concert venue which is why we were up there and close to weirs beach! We went up there for one night just for the concert and liked the stay so much we booked a second night! And are already making plans with friends to spend a week up there next summer can't wait to go back! Hope Jennifer will be there too!

Review 103:Our booking said the "breakfast was included". The breakfast offered for free was a continental breakfast. If you want "hot food" there was an additional $6.95 charge. Our room was located across the street from the main hotel. Picture on the website showed that it was on the water. Had we known, we wouldn't have unloaded all of our luggage until we got to our building.

Review 104:The rooms were large and the beds were "super" comfy. The staff was friendly and eager to help.

Review 105:Needs some updating. Our room was fairly inexpensive but we were right by a busy road with road noise. Quieted down at night but noisy neighbors arrived at 11:30 PM woke us up. The room could have used some updating. Bath room was small with very limited counter space. Not enough plugs in the room. Pool had serious amount of chlorine and burned eyes. Had to purchase eye drops to wash out the chlorine.

Review 106:Convenience to show at Meadowbrook. The outdoor restaurant on the lake was great! It was close to groceries and the drug store for shopping. Breakfast upcharge was worth the cost.

Review 107:The resort has weddings. When we arrived on Friday, there was a wedding reception that night right above our heads. The noise from the band was endless. They also allowed all of the wedding guests to take up our parking spots when there was parking for weddings across the road. There were two more weddings on Saturday. The people from the wedding party were in the rooms on the floor with us. The banging of doors went on throughout the night. A call to the main desk did little - he came up to the floor, didn't hear anything and left. This was disappointing since he was told the room the most banging was coming from. Then at about 10:00 PM, we had to endure fire works going off for about a half hour. At checkout, we were asked about our stay and when we informed her of everything, we didn't even get an apology. If you choose to stay, make sure to find out what is going on at the resort and if you will be getting caught up in it. All we wanted was a place to relax. We paid good money to stay there and were disappointed.

Review 108:The location on the water. It was beautiful.

Review 109:I had holes in my shower curtain and it was plastic. For the price of this room should have been more then a plastic curtain.

Review 110:It was a great time. The staff went out of their way to help you and the amenities were awesome

Review 111:Mold smell in hallway Large amount of dust at carpet's edge and in sliding door

Review 112:Location and scenery/view Bathroom was very clean Breakfast was great

Review 113:Can't think of anything - the room was clean, pool area also very clean. We would definitely go back.

Review 114:I appreciated the fact that it is on the water. The beach is clean and the musicians playing at the bar were very good. Keep in mind we are in high season so the price per night was very good. Breakfast was fine - we had the complementary one, included in the price of the room.

Review 115:There was a threshold in the doorway of the bathroom that had a rise of about 1/2 inch and was a definite trip hazard for my 83-year-old mom. Also, the molding on the floor between the carpeting and tile, resulting in another trip hazard. Also, the handicapped shower was an issued because there was no actual shower pan and the water poured out onto the floor (there was no overflow drain in the floor) creating another slip and fall hazard.

Review 116:Location, cleanliness, friendly staff, value was good.

Review 117:vending machine area in the inn area should have been cleaner. Also although our confirmation stated free breakfast we were charged for it.

Review 118:we liked the food and drinks at the gazebo. The staff was courteous and helpful at all times. The bed was phenomenol! the property was great between the outdoor pool ,the indoor facilities and the lake. it was all enjoyable. i sent two couples to the margate per my recommendation [jim zimmerman &nick askanazi ]

Review 119:wi fi only worked in the halls at the location across the street, trash emptied every other day room service, room service left the blue squirt cleaner in room twice, public computer is Windows 2005 and should have been retired years ago, potato skins are on the menu restaurant on beach but they don't offer or make them, rentals rates are extremely expensive for water sports, universal weight machine was broken and dangerous,

Review 120:location, beach, swim wharf,

Review 121:Upon entering the inn across from the main resort, you immediately smelled a foul , dirty locker type smell. It was the same for our room. Other people in our party also experienced the same in their rooms. "The Inn" needs to be totally refurbished. it would also be helpful to have the doors to the interior halls key pass only.

Review 122:We like everything , except the door to the room had to be shut hard each time you came & went! We have recomened your hotel to a lot of people . And had posted you'll on Fb

Review 123:At check-in we were sent to the Inn across the street from the hotel. The Inn room we were given was not worth the cost we were to be charged and we requested another room in the main building. The Inn room was musty, dreary and depressing. The door to the room had swelled shut making it hard to open and close. The room in the main building was much better. There were maintenance issues even in the main building--electric outlets did not hold the plugs. They would fall out of the socket. One outlet box, where the refrigerator was plugged in, was actually completely out of the wall. The elevator, as we unpacked our luggage, did not operated. The door would open and close on the same floor repeatedly. The maintenance person quickly fixed it.

Review 124:The staff were friendly, efficient and the room was always cleaned well. Maintenance people were quick to respond when called. The dockside restaurant was super. The food was very good, the staff friendly and the location was wonderful. The continental breakfast was very good and the staff friendly.

Review 125:-Check-in was very slow. -Desk staff at check out were in the back room, talking and laughing and not taking care of customers. -We asked for shower jell and were given small cakes of facial soap. -Hallway to room smelled smokey.

Review 126:Melissa, staff for morning continental breakfast was wonderfully friendly and efficient. Our nachos and cheese were excellent! Our room was quiet, clean and comfortable.

Review 127:We had an intruder in our room and although we were moved immediately no compensation or justified concern or real compassion was shown by Rachel ( front desk) or Joey the guest manager. They didn't even give us a free breakfast the next morning!! The Inn rooms across the street were damp and musty. The shower was scalding hot without a way to cool it off without pipes sputtering and pounding!! Very poor experience.

Review 128:Location and beach bar

Review 129:I have been to the Margate several times and have always had a great time. They have everything there for you. Excellent, friendly staff and a perfect place to enjoy a vacation.

Review 130:Hot tub was not working when we were there

Review 131:Was a very nice experience, staff was great, views were very nice, and location was good, will be a go to place when I am over there.

Review 132:Nothing!!!

Review 133:Room was clean, staff very friendly, all the amenities I look for. Pool, restaurant, outside bar. Just a very fun place to stay. Pam Smith, Bedford, NH

Review 134:The sausages at the breakfast buffet were not at all hot each of three days. All those motorcycles that week.

Review 135:Proximity to the beach. My room was 40 feet from the beach. Friendly staff.

Review 136:The arcade being closed

Review 137:The pool for the kids
