Reviews for Hotel Kasteelhof 'T Hooghe
Review 1:A mixture of period and modern buildings, the hotel is well placed for both Great War sites and the Belwarde theme park, the staff are friendly and efficient. The restaurant is small and not very appealing but the food was good.
Review 2:The room I was in was in the old building, a minor point the room was cold when I arrived. The main issue was that I could near every time someone moved in the room upstairs, I was also kept awake by someone snoring upstairs.
Review 3:The location was good out of town but only a 10 minute drive.
Review 4:No tea/coffee making facilities in room.
Review 5:Excellent position for Ypres salient sites, only 10 mins from menin gate. Our room had balcony which overlooked the hooghe crater (now an ornamental pond). Wonderful.
Review 6:We were in annexe next to main part of hotel. Modern building and comfortable rooms, but a rather sterile experience. Annexe is very close to a busy road so quite noisy at rush hour.
Review 7:Clean room with all mod cons. Very good breakfast. Close to Ypres and a good place to explore the salient and the various cemeteries.
Review 8:Great location for the WW 1 history buff. Newly renovated rooms made our stay most pleasant. The staff was exceedingly helpful and the breakfast simply relish.
Review 9:It didn't put us of as we had a car but it is a little further out from the town center. We were not worried by this but some might.
Review 10:we were staying in the new building and it really showed. Excellent facilities and furnishing with plenty of space. The breakfast is also first class.
Review 11:Nothing
Review 12:Although we arrived late, the lady at the desk was very friendly and welcoming. We found our own room , which was very easy, and found it to be very modern and clean.
Review 13:Ideally situated for salient battlefield. Garden still has trench etc. Evening meal- no frills but good. Breakfast good- bread particularly excellent.
Review 14:Although the room was very clean and tidy - it was very minimalist - would have liked a comfortable armchair or sofa to sit on instead of an office chair - tea and coffee making facilites would have been nice to have also
Review 15:good location and close to Ieper - very close to several sites of interest. would stay again at this hotel
Review 16:The room was outdated.
Review 17:The hotel is located outside the city of Ypres(Ieper), but at a reasonable distance of less than 5 mins by car. Good starting point for battlefield touring. Breakfast and peking were very good.
Review 18:Inn was near to sites we wanted to visit. Staff were friendly, helpful and able to converse in English and French. Room was clean, bright and very comfortable. Parking was on site and spacious.
Review 19:no bad experience but bedrooms and bathrooms could benefit with upgrading. Bar area is dated and fairly poorly stocked.
Review 20:period property with historical connections. Well located for visiting local sites.
Review 21:The hotel needs to purchase new towels - I would only dry my dog with them they were that small and thin. Tea and coffee facilities would have been good.
Review 22:Hotel was quaint but really needed updating. In good location
Review 23:We loved being in the new annexe, it was very modern and spacious but we could still enjoy the older building for its bar and dining room. Also the facilities for storing our bikes was excellent.
Review 24:The location of the property was inconvenient. We had to rely on taxis to get to and from the hotel.
Review 25:The hotel had great atmosphere. The buffet breakfast was very good. Our room was very quaint.
Review 26:Our long weekend in Ieper was great. The location of the hotel was perfect, and we enjoyed breakfast and the set menu for dinner one night. I reserved a room for four adults and ended up with the suite. It was wonderful and well worth the cost. After a cold few days of touring battlefields and the area, it was wonderful to relax in the suite. Lovely, historical hotel and location. Thanks!
Review 27:(1) Tea in bar at night quite expensive €4.00 (2)when booking only contact was by phone;would prefer E-Mail facilities
Review 28:our booking was a family suite ; great space& comfort, due to flight delays at Brussels we were quite late in arriving but having informed the hotel our booking was available on arrival
Review 29:We were not made aware that a full menu is not served on Fridays and Saturdays. They seemed short on staff as a few were doing everything and were not always welcoming. They had not at first provided us with the twin beds we requested.
Review 30:The location was convenient and historic. The breakfast was plentiful and excellent. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable.
Review 31:Staff were pleasant and friendly, and very helpful with information and directions. The room (in the new annex) was large and with all normal modern mod-cons. Plenty of outdoor parking. Breakfast was simple continental but nice and plentiful. The grounds of the hotel actually contain the infamous Hooge Crater, created by a massive mine in WW1. Littered around the gardens and hidden under the trees are also trenches, bunkers, and piles of countless rusted shells, ammunition and poison gas canisters! Stick to the paths for safety but absolutely do explore these and the explanatory boards. The Hooge Crater Museum which is literally next door, is also a must visit if you're interested in the history of the area. The Hooge Crater Cemetery is opposite. The hotel is just a couple of miles from Ypres, and from the Menin Gate. It is actually located on the Menin Road. You do have to drive into the city although it's only 5 mins.
Review 32:We have stayed here on a few occasions and find the bed uncomfortable as the night develops, as they use a very thick mattress protector that becomes hot and sticky.
Review 33:The location for anyone doing the Ypres battlefields is perfect and the hotel itself is extremely appealing.
Review 34:Lack of tea and coffee making facilities in either room, but generally comfortable and clean
Review 35:Great location, good for exploring the local area. Lots of history on the door step.
Review 36:The location of the hotel was just out of the town, perfect for us, an easy drive into the town with plenty of free parking. Our room was a family which was beautiful, extremely spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious (continental) all food was fresh and very tasty.
Review 37:It was a little bit hot and as we were in rooms 3 and 4 we didn't want to open the doors as we were on ground floor and that would have decreased our security.
Review 38:The shower was fantastic plenty of hot water and a big spray. Clean room fabulous breakfast
Review 39:It was a lovely setting, perfect for our battlefields tour. The small outside museum set in the grounds was well-constructed and informative without being over the top. Very pleased.
Review 40:the walls in the new block adjacent to the main house/hotel seem to be a bit thin as my neighbour hurled abuse at me for the telly which was low sound anyway preset by hotel. Old hotel I was hoping for so will ensure next time
Review 41:The ambience of the place and position to Iper and surroundings excellent
Review 42:the traffic at night was awful and we had no air con it was so hot and we were at the front right on the roadside would not stay again.
Review 43:it was near to where we wanted to go to
Review 44:The gravel drive (vast area of deep gravel) is difficult to walk over if carrying luggage and even worse for us motorcyclists.
Review 45:We were in the new block which is very modern. Very smart and contemporary in contrast to the old hotel which is traditional in style. The secure basement parking for motorcycles is excellent.
Review 46:Near mobile mast.
Review 47:v historical site. We stayed in the new annexe in a huge flat with balcony. V good value. Nice breakfast - mostly continental but boiled eggs too which were appreciated!
Review 48:Excellent position for viewing Ypres and the salient. Had a room in the main building which was atmospheric. Really enjoyed the balcony overlooking the garden and Hooge crater.
Review 49:I stayed 8 nights in the new extension. An extremely comfortable and spacious room with all the usual facilities. Breakfast is good with plenty of choice. The evening meal menu is small but the food preparation and presention is very good.
Review 50:It looked like we booked an odl authentic location but the rooms were in a complete new and dull building. Also we missed a water cooker for making tea in the rooms.
Review 51:Location close to Ypres town center and sites of WW I.
Review 52:Second time we have stayed here, always a pleasure. Wonderful friendly staff and ideal location for WW1 Ypres Salient sites. Free parking. Stayed in new building suite has balcony and was excellent.
Review 53:We wanted to visit Ypres to commemorate the passing of a relative on 30th July 1915 at Hooghe. The hotel was perfectly situated on the site of the Hooghe crater. It was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was very good. We also had an evening meal in the restaurant which was lovely. A family run establishment in a traditional building. We stayed in a modern annexe as there had been a fire in the original annexe. We will definitely stay when we come again
Review 54:* We Brits do like a cup of tea in our rooms - there were no tea/coffee making facilities. (They certainly provide great value at 2 Euros for tea, compared to anywhere else in Belgium or france, making it a minor grumble). Its more, if you fancy a cuppa at midnight, your stuck! Take a travel kettle!!
Review 55:Staff wonderfully friendly, location perfect for Ypres, Passchendale etc. Has its own open air museum, complete with trench and pill box. Food wonderful,
Review 56:The single quilts on the queen bed are a little bit skimpy, not wide enough.
Review 57:It's a great old fashioned chateau/country manor style hotel. With loads of quaint country touches in the decor. Set in a lovely country style setting, even some sheep grazing outside our balcony window. It is in a good location especially for WW1 exploring. You will need your own transport however.
Review 58:Nice large rooms. It was very hot that day but rooms were cool or you had airconditioning available, so very pleasant. Lovely location and gardens. Very conveniently located for visiting Yper.
Review 59:The restaurant is Closed on Sundays, and this is not stated on the Website. We were looking forward to a pleasant stay in a country hotel with a good meal and pleasant surroundings. Everything was closed except for the tea room, and our room was in a different building from what was shown on the web site.
Review 60:The hotel has a very modern wing.No mention of this on Booking.com May be disapointed not to get a 1920's room.
Review 61:Location is Excelent Right in the Thick of WW1 Sites.
Review 62:Would have liked a proper shower cubicle instead of shower over bath. My stay this time was in the old building, the new part has modern bathrooms.
Review 63:Helpful staff, nice room, excellent base to explore the WW1 sites
Review 64:We would have been very pleased if tea/coffee facilities had been in our room.
Review 65:The location was good, the museum garden was very interesting and gave us a taste of the Flanders Fields. The hotel was very clean with comfortable beds and wonderful breakfast.
Review 66:This quirky hotel offers great rooms, service and beers - you must try the steaks too! It's perfectly situated for visiting all the war memorials and you're only ten minutes drive from Ypres itself. Beautiful hotel, can't recommend it highly enough.
Review 67:there was a problem with only having one key as you had to have the key to use the lights in the room, which was a problem when my husband stayed later in the bar and I went to the room, he could not even get into the building without the key.
Review 68:room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was good, nice bar in the evening, dinner was excellent
Review 69:Bar shut at 10pm most nights there is a bar you can use just up the road that opens later
Review 70:This was supposed to be a budget hotel but it's much more than that great location just outside the town great food .
Review 71:Our stay was too short!
Review 72:Close to the WW1 cemetery and the Hooge Crater Museum on the Menin Road, this hotel was our choice of base for our visit to Ypres. A warm welcome, clean but basic room in the new annexe, reasonable rates. Would like to stay again.
Review 73:No tea/ coffee making facilities. Pebble drive & parking areas to difficult to walk on.
Review 74:Clean, very modern room/hotel building. Outside patio for ground floor rooms.
Review 75:Breakfast in a room other than the bar would have been preferable. Dusty dried flowers could have been removed without detriment.
Review 76:Gardens beautiful. Outlook great and very quiet at night. As far as a commemorative location hotel undersells itself.
Review 77:not a bad experience but observation main dinning hall from Alice in wonderland no need for table cloths as no formal dinning menu a little restricted not accommodating children or those attending gate Menine Gate
Review 78:new building accommodation Staff
Review 79:No tea and coffee making facilities.
Review 80:The location is perfect for visiting Ypres. Staff so welcoming and helpful. My travel plug didn't work so they lent us one. Beautiful setting.
Review 81:When booking assumed we would be in the original building but we're in fact accommodated in the new wing. Perhaps this option needs to be identified when booking being considered.
Review 82:Comfort and the quality of the accommodation, staff and food.
Review 83:Location of hotel is excellent, a short, cheap taxi ride into Ypres. Nearby are many World War 1 sites within walking distance. Hotel has a new section in which we stayed, very ,very good. Staff very friendly and speak good English.
Review 84:My wife observed that the "bath towels" were in fact large hand-towels. Larger bath sheets would have been appreciated.
Review 85:Easy access, friendly and efficient staff, clean rooms, plenty of hot water in the bathroom. Just what you need for a great break, with almost nothing to detract
Review 86:Enjoyed the whole experience would definitely stay again but would like to stay in old building next time. Lovely breakfast and staff friendly and helpful.
Review 87:Initially we were booked into the new external hotel facility, this was not made clear during the booking. The new facility, whilst very modern, is plain and characterless. With no fuss the owners we able to accommodate us in the old building with all its character.
Review 88:Rooms, views, breakfast, facilities and location
Review 89:Unpretentious and comfortable place to stay. Very quiet location - we had a room away from the road, but I don't think it would have mattered where we were, since outside the rush-hour the road seems to have very little traffic anyway. Evening menus are small, but this is good! Generous food portions well-cooked and good quality.
Review 90:Nothing.
Review 91:The rooms were excellent. Maybe only comment would be the need for a kettle / cups in the room. The Staff were all happy and very helpful.
Review 92:Our room was situated in the modern annexe building next to the hotel. It was extremely spacious and very clean. There was also access to a communal kitchen on the ground floor of this building which had a microwave, cooker, fridge and kettle - very useful. We would certainly return to this hotel again.
Review 93:misleading main picture on advert.seemed that all guest at this time of year ( january ) are located in a annex some distance from the main building..
Review 94:room clean and tidy and the shower was very good.
Review 95:We had no car and the hotel is quite a bit outside the main town, the local buses are fairly scarce at the weekend, but i,m sure most people who stayed here had a car
Review 96:the rooms were lovely and warm, very comfortable,
Review 97:Lovely large room, lovely and warm, nice comfortable bed, freindly staff will be returning in summer and staying longer the only thing we would have liked is tea and coffee making facility in room
Review 98:A little bit noisy re people leaving and entering rooms, doors were quit loud closing.
Review 99:Rooms were very similar to premier inn layout, very warm, clean and comfortable. Bathrooms very modern, great bath and shower.
Review 100:Hotel was cold.
Review 101:This hotel is right in the middle of were WWI was. Was so interesting to be in this area. We learn so much. The hotel looked like a very old building but was not there at that time period. We went in late Dec was cold, windy and rainy so the halls of hotel were cold but was able to get room warm. The breakfast was very good. Breads were very nice. Would stay if I was to be in area again.
Review 102:Been here before and like the rooms, friendly staff and great location for Ypres and memorials. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent and will happily return to stay again.
Review 103:nothing
Review 104:This hotel along with the whole of ypres has stepped up it's friendliness, appeal, and attitude towards commonwealth visitors. This hotel has invested in new accomodation.
Review 105:If you didn't want to drive into Ypres it was about 4km.
Review 106:We were in the new building which was great. Location was very good for visiting the sites.
Review 107:We were placed in the new building which is not mentioned on their website - very stark clinical business hotel style, not the farmhouse traditional style pictured which drew us to this hotel. Our room felt like a hospital ward.
Review 108:The restaurant in the old building served good food at a reasonable price & we enjoyed our evening there.
Review 109:The main lobby felt clinical.
Review 110:More than ticked all the boxes for a 3* Hotel, situated opposite the old town boundary and a short walk fromain station. We had a large room with balcony.
Review 111:Rooms a little dated, but adds to the quirkiness of the hotel.
Review 112:Lovely hotel on historical site. Great base for exploring Ypres and surrounding area. Staff friendly and helpful . Great little bar area and excellent restaurant in evening.
Review 113:Good food, comfortable room, family run hotel, good selection of beers, centre of the Great War sites, not far from Ypres, easy parking,I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and will book this Hotel again, highly recommended
Review 114:I thought that the hotel was a bit stark and cold. The food was good, if a touch on the expensive side.
Review 115:The access to Ypres was very good as well as its proximity to the cemeteries and museums.
Review 116:The Kitchen was closed on Sunday so we couldn't get any food. There was no lighting in the corridor at night. Beware of the Fun park next to door it is noisy.
Review 117:It had free parking.
Review 118:The beds were awful. Bathroom needs updating. No tea or coffee facilities in room. Towels very poor. Hotel could do with overhaul. Chairs uncomfortable in room. Staff never in evidence.
Review 119:Location. Good choice at breakfast.
Review 120:The hotel is full of character and in beautiful grounds with it's own WWI tunnels and crater. There are additional bedrooms that are based in a building next door which looked much more modern than the original hotel so make sure to check where your room will be if you want the older version! Our room was spacious and immaculate with everything we needed. The dining room and bar were lovely and the breakfast was very fresh. I can't understand why this is only a 3 star hotel, it should be 4 star at least - it's perfect as a base for battlefield tours! I'm already planning my return!
Review 121:We had had a full day visiting the battlefield sites and museums and we were ready for a rest. We were directed to the new block and were very pleased with our room. The showerNd bathroom were great the beds comfortable and enough space for the family. Great breakfast Buffett wish we were staying longer!
Review 122:My 3rd visit and I will certainly be back again sometime. The hotel has a superb location with WW1 history on the hotel grounds. Excellent food....though the menu was a little limited and no food is served on a Sunday night. Friendly staff who all speak excellent English and are happy to help with questions/advice. Room and facilities were very clean. We were located in thew new annex which lacks the charm of the old building but is very comfortable with very nice rooms.
Review 123:Transport links to Ypres on a Sunday poor. The most expensive returnrural taxi fare (from Ypres) for a 4 km journey ever encountered at 20Euro - rip off!!!
Review 124:Historic significance of the Hotel's location. Staff excellent, Nicelittle bar. Mini wildlife park in the back garden.
