Reviews for Hill House Inn

Review 1:Very dated. Advertised bar and restuarant but neither were open. Breakfast was packaged pastries. More like a motel than a famous hotel in Mendocino. Bed not comfy. Hope someone takes over to redo it top to bottom.

Review 2:Large room. Walk to town. Good price on booking site, did not go thro hotel. Quiet.

Review 3:The continental breakfast was a little poor, but that wasn't the reason why we were there.

Review 4:In the small town of Mendocino, everything is close. Hill House Inn wasn't the exception. The staff was always helpful and present for us.

Review 5:The room, while comfy was very dated and the whole inn looked a little rundown.

Review 6:The lovely woman checking us in went out of her way to make sure that we had a room with a view and a fireplace that worked well since it was a rather cool night.

Review 7:Just about everything - service, staff and the smell of a musty room.

Review 8:No much; inn has unlimited potential but needs some love and staff that care about what they do and where they work!

Review 9:Nothing. Inn is a good value for location.

Review 10:Very nice room especially for the money. Bed was very comfortable. Decor is old but very charming. Room was very clean.

Review 11:NO Wi Fi in this place!! We constantly had to put in the password... To loose the connection again and again..and again.. The walls in the room were dirty. The toilet is like the one used on a commercial airplane You can see the trap And you have to hold the handle a few sec to flush.. A huge SCHWOOFFFFT noise comes up( thank goodness I dont fit the hole or I would have been sucked in) I held my breath though.. Didnt know what kind of air would come out if it! Breakfast was supposed to be served at 7:30 AM. We were there at 8 so we can eat and walk the 5 mn walk to Mendocino 's artsy shops.. No smell of toast or coffee... Just a sign that said: "Breakfast will be served late today Sorry for the inconvenience" we came back at 10 for the... Bagels Yogurts..OJ.. Coffee/tea.. Hard boil egg..nothing special. The first floor room and stage still had Decorations and empty beer bottles from 2 days ago New year's party. Very dissapointed The garden view of our room was: the parking lot. Old friends recommended us to spend the night there ..We 've got bad news for them: DON'T It has changed tremendously.

Review 12:The furniture in the room reminded us of a B and B in England. It felt cozy but that 's the only good thing we can say about this hotel. As you look closer, you can see the dirty walls and the old carpet.

Review 13:The restaurant was closed due to chef quitting on New Years Eve. The bar was rarely open. No screen on upstairs window. Poor lighting outdoors at night from parking lot.

Review 14:Walking distance from town. Very quiet and romantic

Review 15:Bad room #227, room smelled bad, dirty sheets, heater broken, cold night, no bathrobes as promised, No elevator to breakfast, Continental breakfast not full breakfast, not for elderly or handicapped, Continental breakfast not full breakfast, wi-fi broken. stairs.

Review 16:They put us in another room, second night.

Review 17:The hotel is situated in a wonderful quiet town of Mendocino, and it has great views of the ocean. It's two blocks from downtown which makes it great -close to best restaurants and galleries and quiet at the same time.

Review 18:No microwave in room.

Review 19:Convenient location to town. Housekeeping threw something out by mistake. They volunteered to look through the garbage until they found it and was very gracious about doing it and apologetic for the mistake.

Review 20:The breakfast waitress has a serious attitude problem towards her job. Would have loved a fridge and kettle in the room.

Review 21:Very friendly front office staff and owner; we've liked the charm of the place with its olden-day glory.

Review 22:PAackaged breakfast items,no elevator to room, no elevator available to get to breakfast room, deadpan staff at desk

Review 23:Location,gardens,lounge,cleanliness,beds

Review 24:The property is tired. The bedding is old and uncomfortable. The decor in our room was old. The curtain was falling down on one side. The lamps looked like they came from Walmart. I expected more for my money.

Review 25:The Hill House is in a great location in the town of Mendicino within walking distance to restaurants and shopping in the quaint seaside location.

Review 26:Lack of internet service in ur room. Had to go to the lobby and it was chilly.

Review 27:Brkfast was good. Maid service excellent. Bar food was fair. Bed was fine. All in all except for the internet service we had a wonderful return visit.

Review 28:Restaurant was not open on Thursday night and closed early Friday (due to lack of customers), but they gave us a coupon for 15% off at the Mendocino Hotel, a sister property downtown.

Review 29:Lovely, large room overlooking a front garden. Staff was very nice and helpful. Room was clean. Live music Sat night.

Review 30:High unseasonal heat made the lack of an air conditioner tough to endure. Had to open the window and door to get ventilation. A transom would have been nice. The restaurant was closed and the bar had a 14.00 hamburger available. Felt like half an experience.

Review 31:The location. An outstanding bartender, friendly and personable. The ocean view when we stood to the left of the window and looked 45-60 degrees to the right.

Review 32:Did not find the soft pillows in the closet until the next morning. Was not comfortable with the hard pillows on the bed. Actually, my mistake.

Review 33:The staff and the Breakfast

Review 34:Rooms are set out in a motel arrangement which I had not expected for rather expensive accommodation.

Review 35:Great location within very easy, although not flat, access to the centre of Mendichino. Staff very helpful, easy parking. Hotel restaurant on site.

Review 36:The continental breakfast could have had a bit more to offer...but still wasn't that bad.

Review 37:Everything was lovely...and looked just like I imagined from the online pictures when booking. The staff was great!

Review 38:The hotel is in need of upgrades. The chairs in room very uncomfortable. The continental breakfast lacked interest. At least give non sugary cereal boxes choice.

Review 39:The location is perfect. The size of room large. The outside grounds pretty and well kept.

Review 40:This hotel was probably the best around 30 years ago but it has aged and the rooms need updating.

Review 41:Great location, nice grounds, friendly staff, good value

Review 42:Initially situated in a room with mildew that was quite strong in odor. In addition, wasn't given the room defined by the confirmation e-mail. Very disconcerting at first.

Review 43:Once moved, room view toward the ocean was nice and very quiet. Property situated close to town, bakery, and restaurants.

Review 44:People in charge did not seem to care about the lies they told about the property , or any of the amenities that they promised. The fact that many of the promised features of the property, according to the site as well as the manager on site were either inflated or totally untrue from the get go seemed to make no difference or make any difference to the people in charge at the time of check-in is totally inconsoncianable!!! The fact that the general manager (sussospibly) at the time of check-in had taken care of many of the known issues (which he did not) also did not tell about the fact that there was no lock on the doors and things like that. We realize that the property has just been sold, but it brings to questions where the problem truly is. We would probably never stay in this property again under any circumstances!!!! Certainly not top be trusted!!!

Review 45:Described themselves as a "bed and breakfast" which to me means some effort went into breakfast. Everything came out of a box or plastic bag except the fruit... Had a really stuffy ground floor room with no air conditioning or ceiling fan. The only way to ventilate the room was to open the screen-less windows and that really wasn't sufficient. Pictures imply that you can sit out and ponder the ocean-- but only if you rent an ocean view room. There are no chairs in public spaces.

Review 46:It was a nice enough place and I would probably have been less disappointed if it had been clear what I was getting.

Review 47:A staff person failed to show one morning to put out the continental breakfast. The rooms did have a musty, old smell to them.

Review 48:The cleanliness of the rooms

Review 49:The faucet In the bathtub/shower was broken and could not be fixed until the next day. Somewhat inconvenient after coming back up from the beach that evening.

Review 50:We have stayed before. The rooms are comfortable and the location is great. It appeared to be in the beginning stages of a remodel... Will be anxious to see it next year.

Review 51:Pillows were like huge sacs of concrete! No coffee in room.

Review 52:Enjoyed the location, sitting out on deck in the ocean air. Brought my large Shepard dog and enjoyed being able to easily walk her around the property.

Review 53:It was a very old fashion and kind of rundown. Dining room was a big room with tables and it no pictures no ambience. The breakfast was uneventful. Just really needs a makeover and it would be a great spot.

Review 54:It's a nice place and has a good location. The people at the front desk or helpful and friendly.

Review 55:Bed was hard, shower pipes loud and unable to take a hot shower-- just luke warm. Size of tub, toilet area a tight squeeze for any sized person.

Review 56:Quiet and peaceful. Bygone era ambiance pleasant. Great parking to room location.

Review 57:Wfi was terrible. I thought that the maids should have replenished the soap, body wash, and shampoo daily since they are tiny sundries. We got one tiny bar of soap our whole stay.

Review 58:Very spacious room. Beautiful inn, and great staff.

Review 59:They had new internet provider so wifi wasn't available in rooms and only partially reliable in main building. As a business owner, I need to be able to check in by internet. I had to go to internet café in town.

Review 60:Room was comfortable.

Review 61:Not a big problem , the WIFI was not consistent but it was fine in he beautiful lobby I thought it could be a bit less expensive

Review 62:The Hill House Inn Is a quaint wonderful place. Loved the fact that many episods of "Murder She Wrote" were filmed there. Clean and comfortable, it was fine for my grandoughter and I We thoroughly enjoy it.

Review 63:The view from my room was not really much of a view, but the room was nice. There wasn't any Wi-Fi available except in the lobby.

Review 64:I liked the location of this property, and the staff are very pleasant. It was very convenient for walking around Mendocino. I noticed quite a few people remarked how dated this hotel is. It is, but it is clean and nice. The continental breakfast was very nicely presented.

Review 65:Beds were older, we are picky sleepers and stayed here for 4 days. We walked away with stiff necks.

Review 66:Nice historic B&B at a great rate. Nice to be right in Mendocino, which is a great town to stay in.

Review 67:The wallpaper felt like it has been there for 50 years or more. The plug near the bathroom sink didn't work and so we had to borrow an extension cord. Every time we went to the desk, we had a long wait for a receptionist.

Review 68:The location was great. The landscaping was beautiful. The proximity to the scene of town was excellent. We also liked the band on Saturday night.

Review 69:Breakfast was unimaginative and badly serviced. Cheqap bagels, bread that did not fit in the toasters, cheapest fruit with no seasonal fruit (peaches, berries for instance), No hard boiled eggs this week. Sorry. muffins packaged in the big company wrappers, the kind I would NEVER buy in a store, let alone eat. It's a pity that such a nice Inn would have so little concern for food, as we all know that food is the cement of relationships -- family or business or otherwise. Dinner in the restaurant was equally poor. Packaged frozen fried foods just heated up, no green veggies or salads. Yuck! It gave me indigestion.

Review 70:Staff at reception was not very forthcoming. Worst breakfast during four week trip. Place could do with an update.

Review 71:great location close to town, colourful garden area ( in better condition than rooms)

Review 72:Paid for a roll away bed but was not provided. Staff promised to send it asap but didn't. The rooms are old with sticky carpets.

Review 73:Proximity to stores

Review 74:Our room decor was from the 80's, blue carpet with big red flowers, floral blue and yellow bedspread with plaid blue and yellow curtains.

Review 75:It is a beautiful looking hotel on the outside that looks like a bed and breakfast with pretty flowers and plants all around the property. We had a HUGE room with a wet bar with sink and small refrigerator.

Review 76:Did not sleep well due to mattress being too hard. Was to get an emailed receipt with corrections to our bill that so far has not been sent.

Review 77:The hotel is surrounded by gorgeous gardens. The checkout clerk tried diligently to figure out what the checkin clerk did wrong when we checked in.

Review 78:This formerly beautiful place, the gardens still speak of its glory, is falling apart and needs a major overhaul. The restaurant is closed, most likely lack of money to run it. A real pity to see it go down like this!

Review 79:While wifi on a trip like this is not vital, it does help when cell coverage is poor in the area. For the most part, the wifi did not work the two days we were there.

Review 80:Location and staff are great.

Review 81:The room lacked bedside lighting for some reason. The free breakfast was mostly pre-packaged items, reminiscent of a down-scale motel.

Review 82:The location in Mendocino village was quiet and very convenient for our stay on the coast. It was central to everything we wished to see and do.

Review 83:gave away our room. But I was refunded half stay. Jason tried to be helpful, but wasn't. We also couldn't get tv to work.

Review 84:I thought the location was nice. Real closes to everything. Nice and quite.

Review 85:Our first room had popcorn and a toenail in the bed sheets. Replacement room was fair but this hotel is really showing it's age.

Review 86:That we only stayed one night

Review 87:Poor tv reception

Review 88:Great value.nice clean rooms with a antique furniture and nice views of gardens or the coast.all this including breakfast in a large dining room with ocean views for the same price as the local 6 motel.

Review 89:The fire alarm went off when I took a shower. The coffee maker did not work The lamp by the bed was burnt out. Cleaning staff came in when I had a do not disturb sign by the door the day clerk was unprofessional and impolite. The manager was excellent and assured me she would correct the situation.

Review 90:The fragrance of the garden in the morning. The view of the sea from the breakfast room the check in person At 10:30 pm was gracious and helped me with luggage was kind. His name was Josh. I appreciated the cleanliness of the room

Review 91:Very friendly personnel, very accommodating. A nice large room. Good bed. The building is a bit outdated, however very charming. Beautiful surroundings.

Review 92:Room hot in afternoon and evening due to no air-conditioning. Was supposed to have an ocean view and didn't get it. Had to pay a $10/pp cover charge to get a drink at the bar because a band was playing even though we were guests. No chairs on outdoor deck to sit in the evening. Shower gel tube not even enough for one person. Unfriendly staff.

Review 93:The gardens were beautiful.

Review 94:The breakfast was really bad, plastic wrapped muffins and mediocre coffee and cereal in those pre packaged tub things, really not good. NO wifi in rooms, small tv's and the DVD player in the TV did not work. room was not cleaned over my two night stay and the morning clerk while pleasant was late opening the lobby both days I was there. Would not stay again.

Review 95:Location was nice, cant beat Mendacino CA

Review 96:Apart from one extremely helpful young man at reception the rest of the reception staff were rather indifferent towards us

Review 97:Location and traditional style and decor. Were excellent

Review 98:Wifi was only working in the main building and there is definitely room for improvement of the breakfast.

Review 99:Mendocino and Hill House Inn good choices to stay, when visiting the North coast, nice spacious room, good atmosphere, easy to walk around Mendocino

Review 100:The only thing I did not like was the musty odor of antique furniture in our room.....placing an odor removal product in the room might be considered!

Review 101:Requested a 1st floor room - got stuck upstairs. Run-down, in the middle of an ownership change, property restaurant is a joke, bedding was in bad shape - pillows were trashed, limited room ventilation.

Review 102:Not much ... we left early.

Review 103:Reception and booking in we're slow.

Review 104:Reception area and lounge were lovely. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Good location, short walk into Mendocino.

Review 105:Beds were terribly uncomfortable The continental breakfast was extremely poor quality An air of disrepair. Second morning no hot water and then no water at all. Place had been purchased by foreign company and the charm and upkeep had disappeared.

Review 106:Location Concerned but minimal staff

Review 107:The hotel is worn and shows its age. The carpets and walls need freshening. I have never had such heavy and thick pillows. I would recommend throwing them out. I don't think this hotel has been updated since I last stayed here in the 70's. I would not recommend this hotel for the price they charge.

Review 108:The location is great. It is close enough to walk into the town of Mendocino for shopping and meals.

Review 109:Quite a bit about Hill House was not as I remembered. The bed was uncomfortable for both of us, the maintenance was not up to par, the room did not provide a blow drier as most hotels now do, and wi-fi was only available in the lobby (not disclosed when we made reservations). There was no one at reception when we checked in - a sign said "I'll be right back" but we waited about 20 minutes. Finally, the conservatory where the continental breakfast was served was infested with ants, and the the food provided was typical of a $55/night establishment: instant oatmeal, fruit, dry cereal, toast. Overall, very disappointed.

Review 110:My son was being married in Little River, and we have stayed at Hill House years ago. The grounds were as we remembered, and we got good cell phone service "on the hill."

Review 111:The room wasn't worth anything close to what they charged and they were nice enough to refund half of the charge. The place recently changed hands and the staff were up in the air about what was coming, and even if they still had jobs. Also, the toilets 'spit water' during a flush. Gross.

Review 112:They should be utilizing their restaurant and bar area to its full potential.

Review 113:I loved that the staff was very accommodating and the location is wonderful. Excellent view of the ocean.

Review 114:We arrived after 9 pm and it was pitch dark. There was a note on thedoor that we had to drive to find another hotel, wait for that rep togive us a key, then drive back to the Hill House and find our room - allstill moving around in the pitch dark (and with a broken, roped offstair case to add to our challenge!) We finally found the room but if Ididn't experience it myself, I would say someone made this storyup... Unfortunately, it was real or unreal for a hospitality Inn!

Review 115:Flower garden we saw on the way out in the am

Review 116:Would have been nice to be able to see the see (dirty windows). The wifi did not work for the duration of our stay. The staff were generally pleasant but could not even give us a recommendation for somewhere for dinner (apart from their own restaurant). The continental breakfast was very poor (even the orange juice was cheap).

Review 117:Great location with an easy quick walk into town.

Review 118:The toilet is old school and did not work properly.

Review 119:Bed was so comfortable and the surrounding gardens are gorgeous you can smell them right when you pull in. In walking distance to downtown and great food options.

Review 120:Rancid food for breakfast, dirty salt container (not a salt shaker) overt lack of caring on the restaurant staff (morning only) the waitress "Marie" as fabulous.

Review 121:The bed was comfortable. And "Marie" the waitress was wonderful.

Review 122:WiFi barely usable from rooms. "Rack Rates" are very overpriced. Suggest using web companies to search for discounts.

Review 123:Nice rooms, great company.

Review 124:No bad experience, though I couldn't find the blow dryer because the handles were off the closet doors...Oh yes, and was that a closet? It was fixed within 15 minutes...

Review 125:We were upgraded by the front desk to what we were told was a larger room. I liked the big room and the comfy chairs.

Review 126:Wifi didn't work in outer edge rooms.

Review 127:Large room, balcony overlooking distant ocean and coast, easy walk to village, historic building and grounds, quiet sleep. Common areas of inn interesting, beautiful, historic. Breakfast room with lovely sea view.

Review 128:Paid extra for a room with a view of the ocean. If I craned my neck over the view of the parking lot I could just make out a tiny corner of ocean. Really a trumped up amenity.

Review 129:The room was large and comfortable. Good water pressure, although then our shower wouldn't turn off and there was a heavy drip all night-not great during the drought.

Review 130:The room smelled musty and the décor was very dated. The breakfast was lacking in variety-basically there was cereal and bread. Was not impressed.

Review 131:The staff at check in and in the restaurant were very friendly and made us feel welcome. The room was very large and spacious.

Review 132:Needs a good paint job.

Review 133:Very close to town...walkable. nice balcony with ocean view (in distance). Not all rooms have balcony though. Staff greaT. Continental breakfast better than most with fruit bagels HB eggs.

Review 134:Terrible Free Breakfast. Come on, white bread. one cereal choice and bland bagel. Not the way it is pictured. And restaurant closed. all should be on website info. And it was odd , very few guests on property, yet our rooms were next to another couple. and the doors opened in an odd way. Kind of felt rooms could have been separated.

Review 135:Location, and view. Quiet and peaceful

Review 136:Breakfast is self serve buffet style which is fine However if food runs out & coffee & juice are empty you have to search hotel looking for staff so they can replenish Access was restricted to a spiral staircase & we are not aware of any elevators Dinning area for breakfast was shabby almost felt dirty but views would be spectacular on clear day Then again you can't eat the view We could have stayed an extra night but didn't feel comfortable enough to do so

Review 137:Setting was very idyllic

Review 138:Breakfast coffee and tea weren't hot. Breakfast was very basic.

Review 139:Huge room, comfy bed. Good site if the weather is good (less so when the fog is in!)

Review 140:While they advertise pet friendly rooms, I could not have a beach view with my small pet. Garden rooms have views of the parking lot not the gardens. The breakfast has been moved downstairs to a room with no view from the beautiful area that has a wonderful view!! The resturant was closed, no wi-fi except in the loby which closed at 6:00. The resturant was closed. The drapes in my room were in need of replacement and I felt like this was now their orphan property that was no longer important to them.

Review 141:Great building with large once very nice rooms, the view from upstairs was beautiful but it was not available to guests?????

Review 142:This property is not the typical Mendocino Bed and Breakfast. I booked late and this was one of the few available places. I was pleasantly surprised. Found it very comfortable and a friendly staff. Lite entertainment with light fair and a good bar. Two blocks from town. What's not to like?
