Reviews for General Palmer Hotel

Review 1:No negatives to report.

Review 2:Owners have done a great job updating this hotel. The rooms are fairly small but they are very efficient and comfortable. Bed was comfortable and all linens were very clean. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast is excellent.

Review 3:Sound insulation from the street is non existent and the heater was loud enough to wake us up.

Review 4:Great location, very clean, historic building and great values

Review 5:They did not have the reservation I made using Booking.com. Fortunately they had a room available for the same rate.

Review 6:A good location near restaurants and pubs.

Review 7:Breakfast was very disappointing. Eggs and sausage were STONE COLD- totally unacceptable for an establishment like this. Not many tables either. Also, no spoons and help was not very helpful. She was present, but never checked or replenished any items, never brought spoons etc.

Review 8:The lobby antiques and decor were great. Tea service in lobby was also nice. Rooms a bit small, no large chair to sit and read in. Liked the CDs and player in room.

Review 9:The room I had, had no outside windows so there was no natural light. The air was not adjustable so it was miserably hot and uncomfortable. Staff was friendly but was not quick to acknowledge the customers, poor communication skills.

Review 10:Great location right on Main Street. Very clean, with a nice modern bathroom.

Review 11:Wish the room would of had a small fridge or microwave

Review 12:The hotel was warm and Cozy. Room was clean and comfortable. Old fashioned and just as I imagined. We will stay there again.

Review 13:Too much light all night at the window, the room was too hot and I couldnot control the temp well. Wifi sucked and was essentially unusable.

Review 14:I liked the old fashioned nature of the property, the bed and pillowswere very comfortable. The room was well appointed, the toiletries weretop notch.

Review 15:Room was very stuffy and the a/c had been turned off for the season. Beautiful stained glass transom window over the door, but the hall light was bright and lit up the whole room.

Review 16:Loved the historical setting. Great breakfast. Good strong coffee available all day and freshly baked cookies in the afternoon. Great bed, pillows and upscaled bath.

Review 17:Weekend breakfast was not up to standards. They didn't keep the small room cleaned up. They didn't keep the food & beverages filled. No condiments like butter, jam, sugars. There were no clean utensils. The selections are very minimal so it was disheartening they couldn't keep them refilled.

Review 18:Comfortable bedding. Great location.

Review 19:No food or drink on premise.

Review 20:My room was so pretty, small and quant. Very quiet. I came to town for the train and I loved that it was the building next to yours...

Review 21:It's a 100 yr old hotel that has been updated. updates were well done - kept the essence of the turn-of-the-century while updating the bathrooms and lighting

Review 22:Hall lights shine into rooms through stained glass transom over entry door.

Review 23:Right next to Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad station - purpose of our trip. Hotel is 1890 original - super place to stay

Review 24:The rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable, and the staff was very nice. Breakfast was also good. Nice to have that there is always coffee, etc. available. Afternoon cookies was a nice touch.

Review 25:Desk staff was condescending and unpleasant. In s pite of a very early reservation, placed us initially in the "wing" as opposed to the historic hotel itself. When requesting the original, the desk person did accommodate the request, however accused me of returning only one of two keys, when in fact I had returned both, noting to her that one was bent . When she realized her mistake she was rude and unapologetic. Ps - I should have typed. This in "What I did no like"

Review 26:Everything you needed in a room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely breakfast and even lovelier chocolate chip cookies and tea or coffee served in the lobby. Very elegant.

Review 27:The breakfast crew was having problems keeping up, but it was delicious. Also, for the price we think they could have upgraded to a little better toilet paper.

Review 28:It had very charming decor, definitely not your cookie cutter hotel. Great view of the Durango & Silverton trains taking off in the morning. Great Time!

Review 29:Room did not have a window so was claustrophobic. Glass over door let in too much light from hallway all night. Neighbors came in very late both nights and we're obviously intoxicated. We expected our bed to be made up the second day and a few new towels brought in.

Review 30:Location is great.

Review 31:Great Hotel. Great Location. Great staff - well trained. Without a doubt, if you are going to Durango, this is the place to stay. Everything is walking distance, including the train (right next door). Older classic hotel, beds were excellent. You don't want to stay away from downtown if you visit Durango - the charm is in the city in the evening!!

Review 32:The elevator

Review 33:Great location, we stayed in 2 different rooms. The first was a king, very comfortable bed and seating. The second room was a Murphy bed, small sofa was worn out, TV was small. Room was clean but way too small. They tried to accomadate us because we had an unexpected longer stay and didn't have reservations for the last few days. Staff very nice.

Review 34:The breakfast room is a little small so when the hotel is full, people sit on a lovely veranda, but it's hard juggling cereal and coffee on low tables. The continental breakfast was fine, but could have been a little more interesting . Most rooms do not have windows- ok for me because I liked the quiet, but my husband missed having windows.

Review 35:Very nice historic hotel in best location- right on Main Street, 1/2 block from the Durango- Silverton Train, easy access coming into town from highway 160, right in middle of shops and restaurants. The hotel is graciously decorated in a Victorian style- antiques, etc, very nice furniture, luxurious linens, bathroom counter is open to main room had very nice granite countertop. Hotel was clean, clean, and staff outstanding. Parking is very convenient.

Review 36:Failed to clean room after first night. Upon inquiry they were very apologetic and gave 10% reduction in cost of stay. Bit noisy being over kitchen for restaurant. Knocking noises lasted till after 11:00 pm. Breakfast was good for motel but far from that of a B&B.

Review 37:Location was in historic district near train station. Associated restaurant very convenient.

Review 38:The lack of bar and restaurant facilities. The breakfast area was tiny and inadequate - we had to eat balancing plates on our laps! The food provided was below standard. We saw few staff, on returning in the evening there was no one on the reception desk and we saw no security.

Review 39:Location. Lovely old building. Comfortable room, but very small.

Review 40:Very small but classy elevator.

Review 41:It's a step back in time, a beautiful, well kept hotel. Everything was top notch. Our room on the 3rd floor had access to the outside porch, but make sure you prop the door open, there is no way to get back inside without walking down to the lobby outside.

Review 42:The hotel location was perfect - a two block bike ride to the river path and close to shopping and the train. The staff was friendly and we enjoyed eating on the balconies and watching the trains come and go (Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge). Good cookies.

Review 43:Traffic at night downtown.. Some guy in a loud dodge diesel kept making passes through town.grrr

Review 44:There was a young man named Matt.We were very pleased with his professional attitude ..his appearance.. his politeness. Got caught up in scheduling etc.and didn't get a chance to tip him..still would if I new his address. He was the best..please pass this on to him.

Review 45:The elevator is too small for the cart. It is cute and I like that it is the oldest elevator in Colorado, but it takes some doing to get the luggage cart on the elevator. Also there are not enough tables for breakfast. I do not like eating with a plate in my lap!

Review 46:I liked the bathroom. Tub was clean and I like having the sink separate from the toilet and bathtub.

Review 47:The lift was quite small but in keeping with the period theme.

Review 48:We loved the decor, fantastic breakfast with beautiful crockery- no paper cups or plates here! It was an interesting "step back in time". Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Review 49:breakfast was fine but would have been much better with fruit.

Review 50:Very convenient location right near the railway and the Middle of the tourist part of town. Room was lovely with a nice tub. Nice public rooms. Plenty of restaurant choices right nearby.

Review 51:Before we checked in, we had a flat tire in our rental car and they helped with all the logistics of getting a new rental. This is one of our favorite hotels we have ever stayed at.

Review 52:We arrived on the day before Graduation Weekend, the kick-off for the main summer season. The ventilating system wasn't on, and our windowless rooms felt very stuffy. It took 24 hours to fix the problem, but they did get it sorted out. I think the AC was probably scheduled to be turned on Friday, we arrived on Thursday...

Review 53:The hotel has a long history, and it is quirky. Our rooms had no windows. I have never stayed in a hotel room without windows! It turns out that the rooms with windows were originally for the "important" people in Durango, the ones with no windows were for the miners. Great decor and an effort to keep the "flavor" of the original hotel are all evident. Staff were great, courtesy coffee and hot chocolate chip cookies were wonderful too.

Review 54:The WiFi did not work plain and simple. We were told, "they are working on it" Serving a tired breakfast on lovely china does not make it taste any better. Very disappointed.

Review 55:Our room was beautiful, the linens were so soft, the bed cozy, and beyond romantic!!

Review 56:The breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Yes it is billed as continental but it would help if there was some fruit.

Review 57:Room was beautiful and roomy, deco for whole hotel is great, very appropriate for the look of town and hotel. Elevate is a fun experience, small about again appropriate and true to the hotel

Review 58:There more guests than tables for Sunday breakfast so many had to sit outside dining room and balance plates on their laps. Fresh fruit would have been nice.

Review 59:Quiet, very comfortable. Exceptionally helpful staff.

Review 60:Had trouble with the tub but they came up and fixed it

Review 61:We stayed here for New Year's Eve and it was such a beautiful hotel. The rooms has beautiful furniture and the old fashion keys and elevator were so fun. The staff we absolutely wonderful. We would stay here again for sure

Review 62:Rooms tended to be a bit hot and stuffy, unless you had balcony room.

Review 63:Hotel staff pleasant and helpful. Rooms clean and good size.Hotel location in Durango was handy to everything and wifi in room worked Ok Close to the historic railroad going to Silvertown.

Review 64:Building relies on a boiler. As a result, room was hot. Forced to openwindows in room which let in street noise. Took hours for the room tocool off before being remotely comfortable.Continental breakfast was a big disappointment after the high quality of most everything else. Skip their breakfast and eat out elsewhere!

Review 65:The staff was superb. The high quality of beds/bedding, wine glassesand Keurig coffee, sitting area with comfortable chairs in the room. Cdplayer provided with soothing sounds to help you sleep. Soft towels andrelaxing hot shower. Beautiful Victorian style throughout.

Review 66:the gen. palmer coffee mugs were over priced at $11 each that's just too much. i thought it would be a nice touch to the vaca if we stayed at our namesake hotel.

Review 67:the location was great, the overall first appearance of the room was exceptional

Review 68:We would have preferred to be in the main building. We weren't aware there was a second building. Also, the bed was high off the floor.

Review 69:The beds were comfortable and the furnishings were very attractive. It is close to stores and restaurants.

Review 70:1. Room not dark for sleeping because the transom had no shade to block hallway light from entering the room. 2. Room had no windows. 3. Hotel was transitioning from A/C to heat. There was no air flow during second night of two-night stay. Room very warm and stuffy, and along with the light from the transom, resulted in a poor night's sleep.

Review 71:1. Proximity to Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad-walk one block to depot and leave the car parked at the hotel. Ideal for 8:00 or 8:45 AM train departure. 2. Room was quiet.

Review 72:Tiny old elevator- neat period elevator but couldn't hold more than one person and their luggage, awkward and difficult to get in and out. Also lighting over sink and for mirror was much too dim

Review 73:Ambience, bedding, location

Review 74:That the Wi-Fi was out due to a lightning strike.

Review 75:Hotel in general. The ancient elevator. Location right next door to the steam train depot. Very nice breakfast. With a short walk to several very nice restaurants.

Review 76:Breakfast is the same provided by average hotels. Room wasnt clean (carpet) but staff would not provide different room suggesting I wait for a vacuum. Rm 209 has very poor acoustics. At 6:45am no hot water (waited 6-7 minutes still cold)...oddly There was hot water in the sink???

Review 77:Attractive antique furniture. Parking lot is right by train station

Review 78:The breakfast was disappointing. and that is why I didn't give this hotel and excellent rating. For $175 a night, I expected more variety and at least some fresh fruit.

Review 79:The atmosphere was most charming. The bed was comfortable. I thought it was neat that there was a deck on each floor. And, It was nice to come back in the afternoon to delicious homemade cookies and tea. I loved the cute little old fashioned elevator for two..

Review 80:Climbing the stairs, it was difficult for a 79 year old with arthritis Thought the price was a little steep, I would recommend the hotel to my children and grandchildren but they couldn't afford it

Review 81:Convenient to train abed downtown Excellent service Fair breakfast

Review 82:Noisy, not all that clean of floors. Hear cross walk warnings all night. Did not book trundle bed but that is what we got. Not real comfortable room. Could not lay in bed and watch tv. Important to me. Kind of a let down for our 35th anniversary.

Review 83:Nice place nice location

Review 84:No window and too expensive. Understand the unique experience and competitive rates but almost $200 a night is a little much. I've paid less for nicer in major cities.

Review 85:Great location with a unique experience. Great historic charm but very well kept up.

Review 86:EVERYTHING.....the hotel is described as:" historical antique & victorian & a 4 diamond hotel." Our deluxe queen room was to have A/C, a desk, flat-screen TV, coffee-maker....WHAT THEY FORGOT.....THE BED. Our confirmed deluxe queen($185) was a very small room with a very old two seater sofa & an old MURPHY BED. The front desk sent us to our room without telling us we did not have a real bed! We are 65+ & the last type of room that we would reserve would be a murphy bed. The hotel told us that was all they had avail. "take it or leave it... The hotels were running full & it is not a good idea to book online." We do a lot of traveling & mainly book online so this was a surprise to us. The General Palmer Hotel rates very high on our list of the worst hotels: for lack of guest service & the ability to honor a confirmed reservation. This hotel might want to look up the definitions of hotel & hospitality!

Review 87:NOTHING....and we were told by an employee of hotel "if you book their hotel thru a third party(Booking.com) they are not responsible for your reservation or the type of room that they give you.".....it was a Sat.night in Durango & the town was very busy. We were a problem for the hotel that they did not want to deal with. We arrived at 6:45pm after a long day on the road & only wanted to relax & get ready for our 8pm dinner reservation.

Review 88:Asked for a room in the main hotel and an early check-in....got neither. The bed in our room was very high. At 5'2" I had difficulty getting into the bed. A stepstool should be provided!

Review 89:Location cant be beat, even with the train station outside the window. We were able to park our car in the free lot and walk everywhere.

Review 90:Our room was laid out strangely and it was impossible to see the tv from the bed. We had a Murphy bed which was surprisingly comfortable, but we kept hitting our toes on the frame.

Review 91:We loved the location and the staff was very helpful and knowledgeable .

Review 92:thought the breakfast was a little meager. would have liked some fruit and maybe some sweet rolls. Food was not what you expect at such a well-run establishment

Review 93:loved the furnishings and antiques. Room even without a window was comfortable and homey. loved the cookies and tea every night

Review 94:Did not like that the room got very cold at night. Has small heater that seemed to shut off. Way to cold in am

Review 95:Loved the room and the area

Review 96:Made my birthday weekend a fantastic one thank you so much!!!

Review 97:Bed over window, can b a little noisey if your room overlooks the main street

Review 98:Great charm about the hotel

Review 99:The room was to hot. Seems only the ac or heater could be turned on.

Review 100:The hotel and room beautiful and great location. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 101:Breakfast was a little weak, not much left at 9:30

Review 102:Right in the heart of downtown

Review 103:No window.

Review 104:Old school fancy place.

Review 105:I thought the breakfasts were very mediocre. The food was only warm.

Review 106:Loved the ambiance and the comfort of the hotel.

Review 107:Nothing

Review 108:Everything! It was the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed in!

Review 109:Bigger breakfast area would be nice

Review 110:The bed

Review 111:elevator hard to use

Review 112:Location; free breakfast available in room free parking

Review 113:Breakfast was quite limited

Review 114:Old fashioned decor and historic feel. Room very comfortable although not having a window was a bit odd

Review 115:too close to train station. wakes you up early. breakfast is not very impressive.

Review 116:good location

Review 117:Unable to cool down the room on the third floor. A/C didn't seem to work.

Review 118:Great proximity to the train station and downtown.

Review 119:The rooms and the breakfast and the location.

Review 120:Breakfast area was VERY small and no place to sit. Also food replenishment was very slow

Review 121:Great location

Review 122:The motel was centrally located. We enjoyed going back in time.

Review 123:Breakfast was so so

Review 124:Simply loved my stay and I look forward to returning .he accomodations were top notch.

Review 125:location in the historic downtown means you can walk everywhere and your car is parked adjacent to the hotel. the staff is friendly and helpful.

Review 126:No comment

Review 127:Cleanliness in room and overall building.

Review 128:Room needed a space heater to keep the chill out and breakfast was sparce

Review 129:Location and staff were great

Review 130:Close to everything we wanted to do.

Review 131:The stairs

Review 132:The bed was great
