Reviews for Madonna Inn

Review 1:The only complaint we had were how we could hear people through the walls very loudly, from the sides and above.

Review 2:We loved the rooms and how it was very unique. The bed was comfortable, room was tidy, and bathroom current and well stocked.

Review 3:Amazing place if you like over the top kitsch! Lots of pink! All bedrooms are themed. We had a great time. Totally over the top and fun. Great place to stay when visiting Hearst Castle which is also over the top!

Review 4:The television reception at night was very poor. The streaming broke up every few minutes and made it extremely difficult to follow a story line.

Review 5:The grounds and buildings were very clean and superbly decorated.

Review 6:Charming in an unexpected way - beautiful gardens and nicely maintained property. When we first arrived I wasn't quite sure what to think - sort of over the top but in a meaning to please kind of way. Really grew on us during our stay. Great access to gardens, hiking, rising, etc. We will definitely stay again when in SLO.

Review 7:No dedicated pedestrian paths to the main facility from guest rooms. Predominantly car-centric environment overall, besides the nicely landscape trail to the pool/spa.

Review 8:Large pool with a great view.

Review 9:Piece of heaven... A pink paradise.. A surreal playful world... So in love with everything there - from the bedroom, to the restaurant, the Copper bar and even the gift shop!

Review 10:Great fun themed hotel, nice rooms and atmosphere throughout and San Luis Obispo centre is about a 20 minute walk away definitely worth a visit on Thursday night when they have a street food party!

Review 11:The biff and vegetables in the restaurant were not worth the expensive price. Overboiled vegetables. Only coffee for one at the coffeemachine in the room when we were two.

Review 12:Best hospitality we have ever experienced! Between dining in the gold booth, swimming after dark, golf cart rides back to our room... Just magic. Best food and drinks! Bartenders were professional and kind. Manager talked to all guests and made us feel special. Great experience!

Review 13:This hotel is really quaint and its stylized decor really helps remove you from the "real world" and allows you to enjoy a proper getaway. The staff was amazing; from the restaurants to the reservation desk, we received friendly and truly helpful service.

Review 14:If staying more than one night, it would be nice to have somewhere to put your clothes.

Review 15:Quirky rooms, could have nightmares if you didn't get the right room !!!

Review 16:Felt it was a bit over priced, especially the food. Pool shades over late avo, so it's an AM and daytime deal.

Review 17:Decor was great. Live band and dancing. Pool was great.

Review 18:Rooms were smaller than expected. I asked for a room with no rock walls. They put us in the Rocky Mountain room! Front desk woman insisted there was no rock in the room, just a rock shower. Clearly she had never been in the room or was intentionally untruthful. The whole room is covered in fake rock.

Review 19:Steakhouse was pricey, but very good.

Review 20:The food was quite expensive. We didn't eat in the main steakhouse as the prices couldn't suit our budget. The cafe was cheaper.

Review 21:We loved the glitz and campness of the whole Madonna inn brand. The pool area was amazing. The burger from the cafe was one of the best I have ever had. The complimentary cookies were a nice touch.

Review 22:Wifi issues in room. The restaurant was expensive and terrible meal.

Review 23:Amazing experience - so different to anywhere else. Wonderful room. Lovely swimming pool. Great surroundings.

Review 24:We were given a 3rd floor walk-up from the parking lot, up a winding staircase. No elevators and no bellman. Dinner was a major disappointment except for the abalone. Both the preparation and the presentation of the two seafood dishes we ordered were about as disappointing as we've ever experienced. May we should have stuck to the meat offerings. Give the seafood a 1 out of 10.

Review 25:The staff was great. The wine pours were generous. We visited the grounds and the pool area and had a favorable impression, but we did not have time to use them. The place is worth a visit but more as a historical place of interest with a very campy, 50's/60's flavor. We also loved that they had farm-raised abalone. It was the only seafood on the menu with the possible option of the black muscles. It was excellent.

Review 26:TVs are a bit on the small side, and the perks are light considering the cost.

Review 27:Awesome location, and a really nice compound with friendly and helpful staff. They also know how to pour a drink.

Review 28:Not able to eat/drink own food at pool area. Annoying when we booked room only! Strange to have hotel straight off highway, pool relaxation while listening to traffic was not ideal

Review 29:Room was very nice and resort was beautiful. Pool was free (although a little small), restaurant was not visited as told it was expensive which meant we always had to venture out for dinner. Bike hire was also expensive for family of four. Tennis was free activity, but make sure you do in the morning before it gets too hot

Review 30:Sorry we didn't get an opportunity to use pool and other facilities due to time constraints.

Review 31:Great fun hotel. We arrived late in the evening as we had visited Hearst Castle on the way from Pacific Grove. Had dinner in the restaurant and food was excellent. Lovely pool and surroundings.

Review 32:They over charged me for my room by $90/£62 and then when I rang up, they said that it wasn't on their files that I'd been charged that.

Review 33:The hotel was beautiful and the food was good.

Review 34:I didn't get the best service and the room I was promised wasn't the room I received I even left early due to the accommodation provided which was nothing.

Review 35:A great quirky hotel which is fun to stay in! Our room was brightly coloured with a huge bed and lots of space, loved the glittery bathroom. The outdoor pool is brilliant with lovely views across to the hills. The restaurant's decor is a must see! Steak is delicious!

Review 36:No breakfast included and everything too expensive in the on-site restaurant/room service. Road noise/highway location.

Review 37:Incredibly kitsch and one of a kind. Good sized uniquely themed rooms. Great pool.

Review 38:HORSEBACK GUIDE WAS AN ABSOLUTE ONE IN A MILLION!! hE GAVE US A HISTORY OF THE MADONNA INN/A HISTORY OF THE AREA AS WELL AS A NATURURALIST'S APPRECIATION OF THE LAND-WE SAW A BOBCAT-HE POINTED OUT THE VARIOUS FLORA -A CACTUS AND OTHER PLANTS NATIVE TO AREA-ALL IN ALL -I WOULD SAY THIS PERSON , WHO I THINK HE SAID HIS NAME WAS JESSE.. AND THE INN ITSELF-THE DECOR -THE SETTING AND THE CHAMPAGNE CAKE!!!! THESE ARE THE FACTORS THAT MADE OUR STAY SO DIFFERENT AND SUPERIOR TO OTHER RESORTS WE HAVE ENJOYED ..MAINLY HOWEVER THE EARLY MORNING RIDE IN THE GORGEOUS MISTY HILLS AND OUR WONDERFUL GUIDE THESE ARE THE MEMORIES I CHERISH!!

Review 39:Was extremely disappointed in how the hotel was run. Our room was extremely worn-down. The couch was broken. The lamp btw the beds didn't work (it took the very nice maintenance guy an hour to figure out what was wrong). And the hot water knob kept falling off. I also slipped by the pool on a puddle of water. My foot got caught underneath me putting all my weight my bent toes and scrapping them. I went into the spa boutique and they had me file an incident report. But other wise very unhelpful and seemed to careless about what happened and more about selling me something. A few hours later we left without anyone cleaning up the water and checked out. Would have thought a manager or supervisor would have come over during checkout to see how I was doing. But nothing. It was poorly handled and when I brought up the room the receptionist seemed to brush us off. Overall it was not a great experience especially for the money. I would suggest skip staying here and just come for drinks or a piece of cake.

Review 40:The pool was great. The decor is definitely something to see.

Review 41:Hmmm, theme varies in different room, I was gonna give my gf a surprise with a princess style room. But they gave us a "buffalo" style room where you will have a giant buffalo head hanging right to your bed. I am not a big fan of that but fairly speaking the room is very comfortable and well-designed, every ceramic tile in the room was painted with a buffalo logo, so you can imagine the same goes with the other rooms, how cool is that!

Review 42:Great place, comfortable room and classic design

Review 43:Rooms prepaid but they then add a resort charge to every room for parking and wifi. Manager was quite rude about it and that spoiled the stay. Kids don't drive but they still charge for that! I said you have no choice but to drive as it is remote and have loads of space to park he said you could take the train! Clearly a con and needs to stop

Review 44:Really whacky hotel every bit was somehow different or 'odd' A fun stay

Review 45:Better than we could have imagined. Amazing, unique, surreal and just perfect. It is a magic little escape that has to be experienced to fully understand how good it is. From the moment we arrived it was a feast for the senses. I would recommend the steak house and cafe.

Review 46:We missed out on a piece of lemon meringue pie because it wasn't ready at brunch and was gone by 3:00 PM. I guess I will have to go back again to get a piece of that!

Review 47:The whole experience was "over the top!" The staff was so pleasant and helpful. Both restaurants serve delicious food! The swimming pool / spa area was lush and enjoyable for all ages. We also took a trail ride and met wonderful trail wranglers with well managed, well cared for horses.

Review 48:The price of wine. 2 glass of wine was $18.00. The wine was not that good.would

Review 49:Everything was great! The bed, the room was awesome. The bathroom was lovely.

Review 50:We stayed two nights and I can't think of anything that we didn't like.

Review 51:We had our 13 year old granddaughter with us and she fell in love with the property. In her opinion it ranked right behind The Del Coronado as her favorite place to stay. We didn't use the pool but visited it and it was beautiful. Yes, it is an older facility but you make allowances for that in your expectations. We took advantage of the horseback riding for our granddaughter and she loved it. Definitely would recommend it to a family with children. For a child it is like staying in one of the sets at Disneyland. I noticed other reviewers complaining about pricing. I would not consider it any higher than other resort type properties.

Review 52:room are somewhat run down. Our room was very small and couldn't imagine staying more than one night in it.

Review 53:Dinner at the steakhouse. Pool is beautiful

Review 54:dinner wasn't v.good. all the steaks tasted the same - dry and smoked! didn't matter what we ordered, the broccoli even tasted the same.

Review 55:the atmosphere, pool, view, rooms, breakfast, atmoshphere.

Review 56:Did not like that we had to go up two flights of stairs to reach our room. They did offer to have someone carry our bags but still required our climbing stairs. Thought the meal/drink prices were a little high. Guess it goes with the interesting environment.

Review 57:Loved the fun atmosphere, completely kitchy. We had a room called "What's Left" Had tile pieces from every other 'theme' room. Rather crazy patchwork effect everywhere. Room was spacious and quiet. Had toilet with new bidet effect and warmed seat! Wonderful shower. Bonus was live music in dining room and awesome dance floor.

Review 58:breakfast : scramble eggs were overcooked, bacon tasted like it had been sitting around for awhile, hash browns were greasier than normal. All in all it was pretty sad breakfast

Review 59:As with a few places in the US; we found the 'resort fee' additions to the bill slightly irksome.

Review 60:This is such a fun place to stay, we loved the unique decor in our room and the public spaces. They seem to have thought of everything; including cookies on arrival, and a cycle pah into town.

Review 61:Very strange chck in charged me extra for 3rd person made me feel like i was trying to cheat them! Ha! Are you serious?! i would have just said there are 2 of us .... I said 3 bc thats what i thought i had booked in site.... Nothing like a bad 1st impression..... Everyone else was super nice

Review 62:A story to tell! Amenities and pool was good

Review 63:The kitsch design might not be to everyone's taste! The gym was also quite small.

Review 64:Great views, nice pool, fun design of the rooms and the restaurant. We went for breakfast at Denny's, right next door.

Review 65:The food is very average....would go into town to eat....

Review 66:Very comfortable and incredible gardens and pool area Bar was fun and they have great gift shops!

Review 67:The food at restaurant and the bakery (for breakfast) was only ok... very expensive considering its medium quality !

Review 68:We had two different rooms... and they were really amazing ! Every room has a different theme... Our rooms were very spacious, clean and well totally crazy !!! The setting of the restaurant was just as crazy as the rooms... Very cool !

Review 69:Beware of the "resort fee." This is $15 that you have to pay when you check out "for using the resort facilities" like the pool, tennis court, etc. You have to pay this even if you don't actually use the resort facilities. They don't add it to the room rate because this way they can charge you more for the room and you don't realize it until you are already sucked in and ready to stay. I looked over the booking site to find mention of the resort fee and did not see a reference to it; I already knew about it because I have stayed here before.

Review 70:I have stayed in other hotels in San Luis Obispo that charge less but the facilities are not kept up well. The Madonna Inn is nicely kept. I like the location because it's easy for me to get to and it's near the freeway but not so close as to be noisy from freeway noise.

Review 71:Do not like ash trays and people smoking around the property. Should be one place out of the way. Don't like seeing or smelling cigarettes.

Review 72:Because it is close to the university and different it is convenient as well as a great place to celebrate special occasions in slo. Our daughter and her friends love going to the steakhouse and the unusual decor a well as good food and cake from the bakery make it a tradition while our daughter is at cal poly.

Review 73:The food, merchandise and resort fee was exorbitant. I felt gauged. Cafe wait staff was terrible.

Review 74:The registration and restaurant staff was great, the decor was very cool and entertaining.

Review 75:The only problem we had was that the next door neighbors were very noisy when they left.

Review 76:We had a very good time. Decided to stay here because I can stay at a motel 6 anytime.

Review 77:We loved the pool that you just walk into down the slope and it was so warm. The two jacuzzis were great. There spa was really nice with great service. And the dancing at the restaurant was fun. We loved the horseback riding on site too. We definitely plan to return.

Review 78:We first visited, just for a drink at the bar, over 20 years ago and had always hankered to return. then the place was comparatively small and secluded. There was some disappointment to find it had grown and the freeway dominated the view. also its original 'funkiness' has been somewhat undermined by its commercialism

Review 79:Not the run of the mill place. Good to be somewhere that looks and feels different from the chains. Our room was spacious and well appointed. We loved the pool.

Review 80:"Resort" fee tacked on at the end of your stay. I was also placed in a room that seemed to be on the remotest end of the place, with a rowdy group of students next door.

Review 81:Heated outdoor pool, friendly staff, unique rooms. The Madonna is a consistently recommended stop in SLO, for dinner or accomodation.

Review 82:The food in the restaurant is terrible. This is a place to visit not stay.

Review 83:If Dolly Parton and Liberace got married it would be less camp than this place. This place has to be seen and instagrammed but don't bother with the food.

Review 84:The tv could be larger. Old eyes need to see a bigger picture from across the room.

Review 85:I liked the size of the room. It was neat and comfortable. The spa experience (I had a massage) was awesome.

Review 86:Input a request into the notes section on Booking.com - was not even read by Inn. They indicated that the notes are not even transmitted to the Inn. Disconnect between the two companies. Definitely would have been more positive experience and higher reviews if notes were taken into consideration.

Review 87:Lots of kids on the dance floor at the steak house was fun to see.

Review 88:We only stayed one night so we really didn't get to experience the hotel for long. Our room was maybe a little dark but other than that it was great.

Review 89:The sheer quirkiness and uniqueness of the place was incredible. Worth the visit alone. Want to go back and see all of the other rooms!

Review 90:They don't specify there is THE HIGHWAY next to the ROOMS! It is VERY NOISY at night. And NOISY on THE swimming pool. Very expansive breakfast. And without a réservation the day BEFORE...no breakfast!!!!

Review 91:The originality. Amazing place, very KITCH and funny. BUT...

Review 92:So Called Resort Fee is a bit of a useless up-charge and seems like nickel and dimeing, especially since you will probably spend more on the site for food and fun which is not a bad thing. NEEDS REFRIGERATORS in the Rooms!

Review 93:It's a fun and nostalgic place, great themed rooms. Food was excellent at the on site restaurants. Free postcard of your room theme. Really close to wineries and the beaches/coastal cities.

Review 94:Thursday night STORM. I should have put my car under some kind of shelter. Never thought I'd have damage!! My 2012 Hybrid battery got wet, it is still at the Toyota Dealers, waiting for a Claim Adjuster to see if they will pay for it or trash our 2006 car???

Review 95:Everything!! Café room #158/#114 Bathroom in #158, I plan to buy the toilet for my home!!! Loved it!!!

Review 96:Nothing at all , it was the best hotel I've ever stayed in.

Review 97:Everything. I could not fault this hotel and its wonderful quirkiness. The hotel was amazing. The rooms were impecable. The staff were friendly and helpfull. I would reccomend this hotel 100% and I personally cannot wait to go back there next year for a longer stay. A fantastically unique experience.

Review 98:Don't think I would have liked to sleep in a cave anyway but these rooms were very expensive. It's a pity the hotel is so close to the highway because car noise can be heard when relaxing by the pool. The food in the restaurant is average.

Review 99:This is such a whacky hotel with lots of unusual features. The room was spacious and the pool area was beautifully landscaped.

Review 100:Everything was excellent.

Review 101:We are two mid's 80's people looking for a "get-a-way" from the city and some peace and quiet. Two days at the Madonna worked out very well. Easy trip south from S.F. area.

Review 102:I loved this place. My husband and I were driving down highway one for our honeymoon and the only reason we chose to stop in San Luis Obispo was so we could stay at the Madonna Inn. It was over the top in every single way and we loved it. Each of the 110 rooms have a different theme and different decorating style (we stayed in the Starry Night). The beds, the bathrooms and the balcony were all lovely. The hotel itself is on a huge parcel of land so they offer horseback riding, spa services and more. We only stayed for one night so we didn't take in the amenities other than the dining (of which you have several choices). For dinner we stopped for drinks first where they had a fun and yummy drink list and a friendly bartender. Then we went to the steakhouse for dinner which was drenched in pink (a signature color). They also offer nightly live entertainment here (the night were there it was salsa music). The food was exceptional and all the desserts were made in house. For breakfast we ate in the cafe and had an amazing meal with HUGE portions. It was a great experience. We also made sure to stop by the bakery to grab some cookies for the road. When we checked out, they gave us a post card with a picture of the room we stayed in as a keep sake. They have paid attention to every detail and it's a really fun place to stay. We could have stayed longer and never left the resort and still had a wonderful time.

Review 103:There was No full length mirror in our room, it drove me crazy!

Review 104:My boyfriend stayed here a couple nights for our anniversary. It was wonderful, there were no kids at the heated swimmimg pool, no kids in the spa and no kids at the dinner hall (i have 3 of them, so i was glad to really be child free). Our themed room was beautiful (a carnival horse as a chandelier). The steak at the restaurant is amazing!

Review 105:Loved everything about the hotel the rooms were so unique, the pool area was great, staff were very friendly and the steak house had amazing food as was the breakfast cafe in the morning. Can't wait to go back!!!

Review 106:I did not like that they did not honor my request to check in early which made getting to a wedding difficult. I requested 2pm check in. Their normal check in is 4pm. They said I could get in at 3pm, but that did not work. So it was a lot of money to just sleep and leave in the morning. They also charge a resort fee, so if you are just sleeping there it is not worth the money. They were also sold out of pastries by 9am which sucks because I heard they are "famous"

Review 107:I like the unique decor and fun atmosphere.

Review 108:Not much to do in san Luis Obispo but the hotel is enough!

Review 109:The hotel is unique, the facilities good and staff very helpful. The bakery is fairytale and the pink restaurant amazing. The food was excellent.

Review 110:Carpeting! I don't like and this is bothersome with today's infection control issues and the rooms were dark.

Review 111:The fun atmosphere and the staff and the pool area and the bar area... All fun

Review 112:The rooms were great & different , the decor was amazing , the food , just about everything created a unique experience , would love 2 go back one day , will recommend it .

Review 113:The rooms were old and had certain odor that wasn't super pleasant. Not like it was bad, more like you could tell it was smoked in years ago. Something just lingers. The air conditioner was horrible. Was so loud when it kicked on it woke you up. It was so bad we started making a joke about it because we couldn't sleep. This place is relying on its uniqueness to make money and if they kept the patina but updated the place it would be really cool.

Review 114:The restaurant was very good and the pool was great.

Review 115:This is such a unique place to stay with great facilities, friendly staff. The restaurant has excellent food and is well priced. Wish we had stayed longer.

Review 116:Nothing at all

Review 117:My third visit to this quirky hotel which is just a load of fun. If you don't like the colour pink than maybe this place is not for you. All the facilities are good and the hotel overall is good value

Review 118:Very noisy, we were on the ground floor and it sounded like a heard of elephants above us. A lot of slamming of doors and children running up and down screaming till gone 11pm

Review 119:Location is great. The individualality of each room, the architecture outside using stone and wood, very attractive

Review 120:If you want to request a specific room, you must have booked your stay through the hotels website. This wasn't a problem for us since we liked the surprise but just a heads up.

Review 121:Every room is different, and I was so excited leading up to the trip not knowing which one we would get. We ended up staying in the Espana room, which was really big (two beds) and had such cool details, which the photos don't really do justice. Take some time to wander around and look at everything- the restaurant, the bar, the bathroom downstairs, the pink tennis and basketball courts. So kitschy, so over the top, so fun. The Pink Champagne cake is a must must must must try. Get it early in the day, otherwise they may run out (that happened to us on the previous day) and then you'll have missed out!

Review 122:Chairs nail under the seat punctured my finger.. Throughout dinner my finger was bleeding. That was very unpleasant and hurtful for me. I was assisted by manager. All chairs need to be checked and fixed to avoid other injuries.

Review 123:It was very charming , comfortable and simply magical.. Great boutique shop and so much to see.. I would love to visit again

Review 124:We stayed in two different rooms and both rooms had several light bulbs that were not working (burned out) and we thought that oversight was not in keeping with the quality displayed by the opulent room decor. One light that did work was outside the room (116) and was so bright it kept us awake.

Review 125:The room decor was out of this world!

Review 126:The prices for food are a bit outrageous. They offer a breakfast for $10 per person. Only ordered for two and was charged $45 for "extras" and due to the fact that we had four (a two yr old and a nine month old) people in our room.

Review 127:The pool area was awesome and the views were beautiful. There is a good trail system too. Wish we had stayed another day so we could have taken advantage of the horse back riding. The restaurants are expensi but the food is top rate. Overall we had a great stay.

Review 128:Only complaint was the desk clerk who was not very friendly upon check in my wife and I were both surprised at his attitude! But he was much nicer upon check out

Review 129:The inn was great! The room was fun and clean great experience! My only complaint would have been the desk clerk who was not very friendly upon check in. But was much nicer upon check out

Review 130:rooms are over-rated rooms smell musty and are dark and dated - need some updating

Review 131:location was fine as we were in slo for a wedding nice pool and jacuzzi

Review 132:Nothing

Review 133:We had a wonderful time! The room was like walking into a new adventure. The property was well groomed, and the hotel was very pretty to look at in the evening with all the lighting! The Steak House decor was amazing! A must see! Food was excellent! The cakes are great!
