Reviews for Mendocino Hotel & Garden

Review 1:Bed lengthwise against wall. For 2 people it was very inconvenient. Bathroom amenities not replenished--our stay was 4 nights and we only had 2 tiny soaps and one bath gel for the duration.

Review 2:Location. Walkable to everything in downtown Mendocino. Comfort of an old style hotel with fireplace and comfortable chairs for leisure in the lobby. Bar/restaurant on premises. Decks for sunsets. Reasonable price for room with bathroom down the hall.

Review 3:Uncomfortable small beds, no fitted bottom sheets (resulting in a tangled mess during the night), bad ventilation so there was a constant smell

Review 4:Great location

Review 5:Sheets a bit stained bathroom fixtures marginal

Review 6:Rustic appeal, antiques, location, fantastic desk staff above & beyond expectat ions food in bar fabulous

Review 7:The hotel is located in the heart of Mendocino, with easy access to both the shops and the bluff walks. It has a second story verandah overlooking the cove and the ocean, which is perfect for watching the sunset. The lobby area was a cozy place to sit and read and people watch. The bar was a nice place to have a drink. It was convenient to have a bar and restaurant on site.

Review 8:Would like to have had a TV in my room, but it did make the trip better not having one. I guess it works out either way.

Review 9:Quaint, safe, quiet and centrally located. Great option if you want to walk to the ocean and beach, tour the city or just relax on the veranda. The old style charm is an added bonus too.

Review 10:The hotel was close to the coast. Just a walk across the street. And they let us bring our litte pet and he had a great time. Food was amazing all around. Drink prices were ok

Review 11:I was traveling with my brother, his wife, and his adult son. The hotel was as charming as I remembered from 25 years ago, but the furniture in settee area of the bar was quite uncomfortable, and the bartender Thursday night seemed more interested in taking care of the locals than us.

Review 12:The location and the views are outstanding. We loved having direct access to the porch and deck from our rooms and enjoyed a breathtaking sunset with a glass of wine shortly after arriving our first night. The shared baths were close to our rooms and were kept clean and well stocked with towels.

Review 13:The walls are paper thin, but it is an 1878 hotel. Wear ear plugs!

Review 14:Charming character, throughout, and beautiful, old, Victorian lobby. Perfect location with views of the ocean.

Review 15:The biggest disappointment ever! We paid 182$ for a super tiny double room without bathroom. What a terrifying bed. The mattress was tiny and uncomfortable. And the sound of the bed was as loud as the music of the pub behind it. The share bathroom the toilet was clean but the shower was dirty and the drain was clogged. It was very disgusting. Also, the woman who was at the front desk was not nice at all. We've been traveling around US for two years, and so far this is the worst experience we have had.

Review 16:Room was stuffy. Wifi did not work in the room. A TV would have been good for winding down at night.

Review 17:Location is great, nice bar and restaurant area downstairs with a lot of dining options. Bed was comfortable.

Review 18:We have stayed in better two star accommodation. Small double bed pushed up against wall, you can literally hear everything as there was one single door in the wall between the next room. Not as per photo advertised!

Review 19:Probably the worst room I have been offered in 50 years of travelling. The room was musty, to obtain the advertised sea view you had to squint through the window for a small glimpse and the balcony was a walkway around the first floor. The size of the King bed was also questionable. Unusually for the USA the staff on arrival were curt. The hotel was also expensive compared to others on the Oregon & Californian coast.

Review 20:Most of the staff were unfriendly and we had to figure out most things ourselves. We had to share the bathroom with the entire floor and we were never told where it was. I only located it when I walked by an unmarked door and heard someone in the shower. The food was not very good and overpriced. They had a terrible wine list which was shocking to be in the Sanoma wine region.

Review 21:The proximity to the cliffs and the view from the balcony. The older gentleman bartender was very nice and gave great service.

Review 22:the room i booked through booking.com was not cheap, over $100/night, and was TINY, had NO windows. it was a closet. i wouldn't have bought this room had it been described. LOUD

Review 23:lovely hotel, great location until this visit i have always stayed in lovely rooms

Review 24:The room that we stayed in on the first night was small and uncomfortable and the bathroom was no more than a cupboard so we moved next day the the chalet part of the hotel where the room was much better

Review 25:The rooms are very small. We were suppose to get a balcony with ocean views but we didn't. The room is very overpriced for what you get. I realize that the property is very very old and that the rooms were probably pretty nice if you lived in that era but not in 2015.

Review 26:I liked it was near the ocean. The hotel was very nice and the décor was beautiful. The food was also very good and the service was good.

Review 27:We really liked the old Victorian style decor and architecture of the hotel. We also really liked how close to the water we were (a couple of nice trails leading to the water).

Review 28:Room not as pictured. No soundproofing. squeaky bed. Plumbing problems. Staff does as little as possible.

Review 29:Nice lobby. Can see ocean from front of hotel.

Review 30:Worst hotel room ever saw. Dirty, small (7'x6'), could not putour baggage anywhere, twin bed aside the wall with the poorest mattresson noisy springs, no ventilation, no window that can be opened, force toopen a door on the common balcony (great open space for rats) just ontop of a bar with drunk people that made the party all night, door lockthat was not working, no bathroom in the room, abusive price (we got afive star in Cambria for the same price), we considered this place forhomeless people...and more...we tried to cancel as soon as we enteredthe room with all the explanation above, the cancellation price was theroom price, the reception was totally unacceptable and really bad...andmore...BOOKING.COM Must remove this hotel from their site

Review 31:The few employees whom we dealt with, i.e., 2 different front desk receptionist and one bar area personnel, did the job at hand (check in, check out, answering questions, providing ice as requested) but there was a lack of friendliness. We never felt welcomed as hotel guests. The shared bathrooms needs to be aired out after showers - would help to leave doors open when not in use, instead of closed and locked. Lacking: Free continental breakfast

Review 32:Loved the hotel LOCATION in center of town and the VIEW from shared front balcony. The swinging bench seat on the balcony is a nice addition. Could use other outdoor sofa, chairs & tables, to complete the look. Our room was small, but cute, comfortable & clean. All in all, a pleasant place to stay.

Review 33:The room didn't have a bath tub as advertised. There was no wifi in the room at all. The room was very small which is understandable since it is old. I bathroom and the washroom sink were separated.

Review 34:I liked the location of the hotel, It was very beautiful location and very close to the cliffs/ beach. The room was cleaned everyday by the cleaning staff and they did a really good job.

Review 35:Food was not good, bed uncomfortable and very small,, room very small no outside air, and very hot and stuffy.. Also details of room very misleading, and staff wasn't helpful.

Review 36:Wifi did not work in our room, so we had to go to the hotel lobby to use it, and staff seemed unconcerned. The room needs a little upgrading for the price: enamel is pealing off the sink, shower flow is adequate but no more, soap & shampoo are not replenished each day. The hotel is changing owners, so no one is on top of things. For the price charged, breakfast should be included.

Review 37:Location, large comfortable room with excellent location in the center of town.

Review 38:Beds were small and not that comfortable, and the room itself was very small (barely bigger than the bed) and poorly ventilated.

Review 39:Great location, good restaurant, interesting and enjoyable historic building.

Review 40:ownership of hotel in transition, also your website (booking.com) claimed our room was a "king suite" which it was not. it was a small room with a double bed with a shower not bath tub as advertised. staff did not seem very helpful. dining was mediocre. also did not like guests all on laptops & cell phones in beautiful old lobby. very disruptive and annoying. not relaxing as i remember it to be!

Review 41:location/view of ocean from communal deck

Review 42:The room was a little stuffy as there is no AC, but the staff loaned us a fan and that helped a lot!

Review 43:The location was excellent and I enjoyed having a room overlooking the balcony and the Ocean. There was a sink in the room and the shared bathrooms and were clean and always available when I needed them. The coffee in the morning was excellent - strong European type coffee. I loved it! The whole ambiance was lovely and old world charm.

Review 44:We hadnt a bathroom for ourselfs, bed was very old and wifi only working in the lobby.

Review 45:Very nice atmosphere and on the perfect place in town.very relaxing time, beautiful countryside.

Review 46:Not enough staff. Cook doubled up as bellman. Bellman doubled up as room service. Drive to the town is a challenge.

Review 47:Very friendly staff. Perfect location to see the town.

Review 48:Found no toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.) until 2nd day, when we asked check-in employee. A few small items were located inside a mirrored cabinet that we never realized opened! Wallpaper in room a bit torn...needed refresh.

Review 49:Location, outstanding!

Review 50:Wifi did not work in the room.

Review 51:A real taste of Victorian England at this very nice historic place. Would need a bit of remodeling though. Staff are friendly and food excellent.

Review 52:European Room (it means your a peeing down the hall) at a great rate during the Mendocino Music Festival. Double bed and a small room with a wonderful balcony, directly across the street from the Festival.

Review 53:Liked everything

Review 54:Loved the location, the friendly staff, the ambiance. No TV in the room, the swing on the balcony, the water view and overall comfortable feeling of the place.

Review 55:My only substantial complaint was the absence of a comfortable chair in my room. There was only an old bentwood chair that felt like it might collapse at any moment. Sitting on the bed was more comfortable, but less practical.

Review 56:The location offered nice views of the ocean from common areas, and from rooms at the front of the hotel. Although I didn't eat breakfast at the hotel, the other meals I had there were very good and reasonably priced. The common areas were very comfortable, with a lot of options for sitting by a window to enjoy the view.

Review 57:I felt that the bed was much firmer than your average person would prefer. Since the booking was for three adults, there was only one wash cloth left for us to use. Ate at your Italian restaurant and thought the food was very poor, particularly the spaghetti that was actually inedible.

Review 58:I thought that the room was quaint, clean and comfortable.

Review 59:One thing menu was very expensive over priced on food $20 -$40 per meal did not eat at hotel. I felt hidden pricing from what I was quoted by booking.com paid almost hundred dollars more at check out

Review 60:Nice relaxing view even though town closes early 6pm.

Review 61:Staff was unprofessional, misleading and uncaring. Rooms were very small. One room assigned to us had a double bed and was right over the kitchen exhaust fan with all of its noise and foul smell. That room, No.217,should never be rented

Review 62:Breakfast not included and costly if you took it.

Review 63:Nice with a hotel without the standard fittings. Located in the middle of the tourist part of town. Enjoyed the creaky wooden floors.

Review 64:We arrived late in the day, and the kind person at check-in offered to upgrade our room to a room with a balcony and a view of the ocean -- what a treat!

Review 65:The bed is hard and squeaky (but fine for a night or two). The room we stayed had a bathroom and a huge window where we could easily see people on the deck... I don't think they could see in but we moved a chair to cover it just so we didn't have to think about it.

Review 66:Great for a short stay - charming to feel your in an earlier era and right across the street from the ocean. The staff was very helpful. I would definitely love to come back sometime soon :)

Review 67:Main hotel is older and has been and is being remodeled. At check in I requested a call in the am re massage. That info never got to the massage suite. The room was lovely and quiet. The service in the dining room was spotty however the views from the bar are spectacular.

Review 68:Very small room with queen sized bed barely fitting the space - hard to move around (Rm. #9). People in #7 came in a bit worse for wear at 2 am, and made a lot of noise. Just getting back to sleep when boiler in kitchen? went on with amazing shake and noise in early am- argh . . .

Review 69:Beautiful location, central to everything and overlooking the ocean. Weather was wet and rainy, but that did not stop us walking around.

Review 70:There is a special charm in the hotel, originally built in 1878, and the location and furnishings enhance the Victorian romantic feel while still providing modern comforts and amenities. A truly romantic getaway.

Review 71:The rooms need remodeling, new towels especially. I stayed here because it was a old hotel, but rooms and hallways had that old old smell.

Review 72:The location it being an old hotel and still in business

Review 73:No elevator. One of the bathrooms was closed the whole three days I was there. There could of been a little tempting treat to go with your coffee in the morning. That would help get you into the dining room for breakfast.

Review 74:Location, location, location. It was so wonderful to go out on the deck and enjoy looking at the ocean!! The lunch I had in the dining room was delicious!

Review 75:Being kept awake by loud drunks both nights in the wee hours, courtesy of the bar next door.

Review 76:My wife and I quite enjoyed the hotel furnishings and devices that evoke the turn of the [20th] century. The time-travelling illusion was enhanced by the instrumental classical music that played at breakfast while gazing at the timeless animated seascape outside.

Review 77:The room was tiny and boiling hot (no AC). The bed was too small to fit an average height man. The hotel is very noisy which combined with paper thin walls makes for very poor sleep. The room and bathrooms were very smelly In 2 out of 3 bathrooms we checked there was no hot water, the third was warm for 2 minutes, then scalding hot (even though there's a message in the bathrooms saying this cannot happen). No wifi - We told told by a very unapologetic staff member it was broken. This would be fair enough but I've read other reviews (from different periods) saying the same thing. The hotel is supposed to be all about historic charm and succeeds in the lobby and restaurant/bar but it seems that otherwise historics charm also comes with a lack of modern comforts expected for a hotel which demands these prices.

Review 78:Location (but then, Mendocino is tiny so it doesn't really matter where in town you are staying).

Review 79:Noisy room (no.7) Small with the bare minimum. Restaurant ran out of fries at seven! (With very little other choice. Only hotel where breakfast not included and it was the most expensive.

Review 80:The decor and fittings look tired. Wifi only available in the lounge area and worked only intermittently.

Review 81:Great view of the sea in a really attractive town. Interesting "heritage" ambience.

Review 82:The facilities were old and in disrepair. An antique armoire's door wouldn't stay closed, necessitating me crawling around it in the middle of the night. The light in the bathroom flickered on and off.

Review 83:The location and size of the room were both good.

Review 84:Cons: Food was mediocre at best, and overpriced. I've had better Rueben sandwiches from Arby's and better fries from McDonalds for a small fraction of the cost. Service in the restaurant was slow, and I finally had to chase someone down to get my bill paid. My advice would be to take a short walk to MacCallum House Inn for something to eat. You will get a much higher quality meal & great service at similar prices to the Mendocino hotel. Coffee creamer, and coffee dispensers, were consistently empty every time that I went down in the morning. Thin walls. You can hear your neighbors talking on their cell phones. In closing, I was placed in a room on top of the kitchen and the clanging of pots and pans was fairly constant.

Review 85:Pros: Hotel (not the restaurant) staff was helpful and kind and got me into my room two hours prior to my actual check in at no extra cost. Comfortable bed that I slept well in. Great view of the ocean off of the shared deck.

Review 86:The bathroom in our room had a hole in the wall with mold, smelled musty, the wallpaper was peeling, and the furniture needed to be replaced in the living area. When we complained about the mold, the lady at reception said she would tell someone that could do something about it. When we checked out, I complained and the manager said she had never been told of the problems. She gave me a small gift but she could do nothing about what we paid because it was booked through Booking.com. Also, the gardens used to be absolutely beautiful but showed a definite lack of care. We have stayed here many times in the past but will not stay again.

Review 87:The food at the restaurant was very good and the furnishings were beautiful in the lobby and restaurant.

Review 88:It seems like the "Victorian Charm" is a bit of an excuse for disrepair. The sink was slow to drain, the walls were scuffed, and what was probably noise from the kitchen below came right into the room through the thin walls.

Review 89:The location is amazing - overlooking the water and a short walk to the beaches and cliffs. We liked that there wasn't a multi-night minimum like many of the coastal hotels and B&B's The price was great.

Review 90:Lack of storage and space around large brass bedstead. Badly cracked sink. Overpriced considering no breakfast or coffee/tea making facility provided.

Review 91:Location Ideally situated and quiet. Dinner good with attentive and helpful staff who made the visit successful.

Review 92:Unfortunately, it seems as if the bathroom is original, too: it could definitely do with an update. Check-in was a little frosty and meals looked expensive.

Review 93:The town is charming and the hotel is right on the waterfront. The frontage is original and gives a real sense of history. We had a room at the front of the hotel with a lovely view.

Review 94:Loud kitchen noises, including an exhaust fan, were going until late at night, and starting early in the morning.

Review 95:Beautiful, old, historic place, set on Main St. with a view of the magnificent cliffs. The downstairs main room/lobby is spectacular.

Review 96:The mattress and pillows were hard. They had seen better days.

Review 97:Loved the location, decor and ambiance. We had a lovely porch over looking a well kept garden.

Review 98:Distance from lobby to room 311. Limited storage space for clothes in the room

Review 99:The hotel lobby, restaurant and bar ambiance. The location with the easy access to town and the headlands. The fireplace in the room.

Review 100:- Tiny rooms. - Lack of air conditioning (not a huge problem). - Not a good restaurant. - Expensive.

Review 101:- Located in the heart of the city, right in front of a very scenic hike/view. - Nice to stay in one of these if you're bored of the typical Hilton/Marriott. - Love the old fashioned design of the hotel. - Right next to a bar. Close to the restaurants in the area. Plenty of shops around.

Review 102:We stayed in the main, old hotel . I don't recommend staying in it. I was very concerned of a fire occurring, the floor was so creaky, the brass bed had every screw loose, the one chair was too fragile to sit on.

Review 103:Avoid rooms on the front west side over the bar refrigeration equipment, quite a hum heard as well as felt. The staff switched out our room to best available, no problem. Good food.

Review 104:A charming Victorian Hotel welcomes you in the 21st Century. Both furnishings and environment takes you back in time, like sitting by the fireside in the lobby, while the fog comes up from the coast. The lack of televisions and private bathrooms may be hard for some but these things places one squarely in a slower time, where you share a hotel with friendly visitors that you meet over breakfast or while reading in the lobby. A jewel.

Review 105:Parking should be provided in front of hotel at least for unloading bags. Striped parking spaces would result in more spaces. Reception staff not welcoming and friendly.

Review 106:The lobby and restaurant areas are very charming and loved the location. Breakfast was very good. Restaurant and bar staff very nice.

Review 107:Missing some of the luxuries and upgrades of a new modern hotel. In my opinion this is not really a negative hit because of the hotel's unique character.

Review 108:Liked that the hotel tries to maintain the Victorian feel. Was treated well by the hotel staff. Enjoyed the restaurant food and ambience for both dinner and breakfast. Great location.

Review 109:The only problem was the pillows were too flat and we both had a sore neck the next day. We asked for better pillows the next morning and we did get them. Your need to have a deal for people who have returned many times.

Review 110:The staff is very nice.

Review 111:Refused to give password to gain access to the WIFI pissed off is when checked out the front desk shown the piece of paper with the password and said I should have gotten it The room is not well maintain broken stopper for the sink and bath tub. Burned out light bulbs. Doors were stucked to get out to the balcony. Room was too dark. Reservation was bad handled. We booked two double beds rooms after driving over 12 hours we found out one of the rooms was a king size bed for four seniors. Booking.com should have contacted us right a way.

Review 112:Location

Review 113:Not worth the price.

Review 114:bed was not very comfortable but everything else was wonderful!

Review 115:1.No dinner service on Monday night 2. Breakfast not served till 8am

Review 116:1. Friendly, competent staff. 2. Quaint comfortable, clean room 3. Good value

Review 117:Friendly staff, atmosphere of hotel - furnishings, View over coast, balcony

Review 118:Shared bathroom in hallway of hotel (I thought it would be closer and shared with less people)

Review 119:Vicorian sphere, bar, restaurant, view

Review 120:Terrible wifi, no television in the room as implied by the website, staff was slightly unfriendly

Review 121:The beds are small and uncomfortable for two people. The shared-bath double rooms are very small.

Review 122:Location, cute balcony and lounge area.

Review 123:Condition of bathroom-cracked sink, no stopper

Review 124:Victorian atmosphere, fireplace, lobby bar

Review 125:The location is perfect.

Review 126:building was old and heard whenever people upstairs walked around

Review 127:location was good, right downtown.
