Reviews for Nicholson House Inn
Review 1:Has seen better days. Superficially clean but anywhere above eye level was dusty and sticky. Communal kitchen well equipped but could do with electric kettle and no tea/coffee/milk provided. The owner gives impression that he has lost interest.
Review 2:Nice old building in great location. Bed very comfortable. Good breakfast with hot scones, eggs, meat, pastries
Review 3:Living in the Midwest we are used to air conditioning roman fan to circulate the air and there wasn't one but we finally got cooled off.
Review 4:The breakfast was great homemade Scones were especially good and a large variety of other good items.
Review 5:Needs to be updated dramatically. No a/c or fans. The Inn is tired & so is the Innkeeper. But the beds were extremely comfortable.
Review 6:The owner wants to & needs to retire. As other reviewers have stated not terribly hospitable or welcoming.
Review 7:Upon arrival, we were greeted by Brent, who made us feel welcome and answered our questions. The rooms were comfortable and well appointed--love the Victorian style. The breakfast was delicious--Brent baked scones for us. The location was ideal for walking around Mendocino.
Review 8:The Inn is quaint but in need of some updating. The atmosphere of the breakfast room wasn't very appealing so we skipped the free food and had a great breakfast at the local cafe/bakery.
Review 9:Nicholson House is in a good location and Mendocino is very walkable. There was free parking in the street. The room was nicely decorated and the bed was comfortable.
Review 10:There are no views that a traveler would consider a waterview. That's ok just don't book it if you think you will sit and look at the harbor. We didn't like the Bible study on the radio while we were eating breakfast.
Review 11:beautiful historic house. Extremely nice place to stay. Room was bigger than many apartments I have lived in
Review 12:No appropriate place; Desk/Table to Sit with Laptop: Power Strip toCharge it and Cellphone!
Review 13:Brent's Genuine Hospitality, that Ownership Interest Mentality; Helpin finding My Cellphone! His Kayak Tour of the Sea Caves, captured onHis GoPro Camera!
Review 14:A bit weird having breakfast in the room that was a garage and is also the office..but it wouldn't stop us staying again.
Review 15:Comfortable room..mini ironing board was useful. Separate lounge with TV. Own keys to come and go easily. Location handy for local amenities.Home baked scones for breakfast.
Review 16:We were in the Admiral's suite. Bathroom and kitchen are quite small, but functional. Shower curtain rod is held up just by compression, thus easily dislodged. Breakfast is limited to one hour, between 8:30 and 9:30.
Review 17:Located just one block from main shopping district, and one block to bluffs and stairs down to Big River. Quiet street. Very comfortable bed.
Review 18:Bed frame rickety, worried it might break. Most rooms have showers not bathtub, but able to cope. Would like something hot included with breakfast, but have never walked away hungry. A luggage rack would be nice. Pretty minor irritants.
Review 19:Comfortable, friendly Inn. Good location. Have stayed there for several years. Scones to die for. Staff has always been very helpful, feels like home.
Review 20:The sleeper bed was uncomfortable and could have used extra blankets and a comforter. The styling was very outdated.
Review 21:The bedroom and bed were really wonderful an comfortable. Mostly we liked the place because of the wonderful location and friendly owner
Review 22:Nothing major to complain about, but towels a little stale and pillows too soft/thin.
Review 23:Overall a good stay, particularly liked the location (very close to Main street and nice restaurant nearby). Mattress was comfortable. Breakfast was friendly. Wifi worked for us. Room was clean.
Review 24:The Admiral Suite was spacious and had a balcony with a view of the bay. The king-sized bed & bedding were very comfortable. We enjoyed the walking distance to the village where there were plenty of options for drinks and dining. We would stay here again.
Review 25:Keeper of the house spent whole time at the computer while we ate breakfast.
Review 26:Breakfast was very good with a variety of fresh fruit and freshly baked scones.
Review 27:we staid on the first floor near door to access all rooms. A bit noisy , though I had asked for first floor.Large stain on rug in living room so we didn't walk on the rug with bare feet.l
Review 28:We had a one bedroom with a small kitchen. The unit was very clean and the bedding was wonderful. Attention was paid to by the owner to make sure the guest had premium bedding, towels and much needed wifi. Nice breakfast with homemade scones. We would definitely go back.
Review 29:They. Did not have us registered for 2 nights thru Dennis, but we had to change rooms after the first night first night in a b&b wasn't thrilled, would stay in hotel next time
Review 30:Location
Review 31:They do not help with bags up the 17 steps to your room. Parking is questionable but we were lucky to get it across the street. The room is small but it could use another comfortable chair. No great view. Not a very friendly atmosphere at breakfast.
Review 32:We liked the bed and bath. The breakfast was okay but definitely continental. The area was nice . The people staying there were friendly. No tv in the room.
Review 33:Can't thinly of a thing we didn't like.
Review 34:Everything! It was just what we wanted in all respects. We stayed in the Admirals Suite. Fully furnished with a private deck. Very comfortable. A true Continental Breakfast with the other guests, who were pleasant company.
Review 35:No TV in room Late. Breakfast-- from 8:30 -- made it useless for travellers who need early start (we forewent breakfast there and ate in town. A suggestion -- step down to bathroom should be clearly marked.
Review 36:Location, comfortable bed
Review 37:Must be able to climb stairs to second floor to get to the room.
Review 38:King suite has a large deck with an ocean view. Comfortable bed. Friendly manager. Continental breakfast included hard boiled eggs, meats and cheeses, as well as breads and cereals, fruit and yogurt.
Review 39:Owner could have been a bit friendlier, odd breakfast with him just banging on keyboard at computer with back to us and not talking, was awaken by him yelling shut your face to his dog who was crying, also the towels were gross, smelled musty and soiled
Review 40:the bed was amazing, the couch was comfy, it was nice for a family with children, good location
Review 41:We enjoyed our one night visit. The bed was delightfully comfortable as was the other furniture. Some of the furniture in the suite was cobbled together and not expensive antiques but overall it was quite satisfying. We were upgraded to two-room suite, so we felt we got very good value. The continental breakfast was varied and plentiful, and conversation with fellow guests delightful. Next door is the Cafe Beaujolais, where we had a wonderful meal.
Review 42:I will try to be as fair as possible here by sticking to the facts…When my friend and I arrived at the B&B we were given the key to the room and told ‘Use the key in the top lock only’, which we did. Turns out the bottom deadbolt had a thin strip of cellophane tape across it on the inside of the door which we didn’t think much about. In the morning I wasn’t thinking about it, and attempted to open the bottom deadbolt to step out onto the deck. Oops, by turning it I accidentally locked us inside the room. Ok, no big deal, there was a window next to the door, also facing the deck, so I tried to open the window and it turns out it was screwed shut and painted over, so no exit there. We were locked in. My friend went to the second story bedroom window and was able to get the attention of Brent, the property manager. When she explained what we had done, he said ‘Why did you use the bottom lock? I told you not to’. While we agree that he had, there is still no excuse for not having repaired the broken lock, especially with the only other reasonable exit (the window) being non-usable Brent then proceeded to try to get us out with no success. I suggested calling the owner which he then did. The owner came over and also chastised us for using the bottom lock. Unbelievable!! He and Brent used a ladder to gain access to the second floor window and came inside, and after about an hour managed to break open the broken lock and open the door. But not one word of apology from him. Brent did say he was sorry about the incident but it would have been nice to hear it from the owner. After we got home, I emailed the owner and told him that if I were in his shoes, I would have offered us a refund for our night’s stay. No response whatsoever. What really bothers me is that had there been a fire, we would have been trapped and would have had to break glass to get out. When we asked the owner why the window was ‘screwed shut’ he said he did that because it leaked.
Review 43:Location is good and bed was comfortable. Breakfast was fine but nothing special.
Review 44:Rooms just a little small.

Review 114:Small but very beautiful, well planned and equipped rooms, in classic victorian style. Lots of broshures. Excellent location just next to the seside boardwalk and cosy Beaujolais café.
Review 115:Was not aware that rooms on the 2nd floor would require strength and balance to achieve the room. The room swas highly musty and the towels smelled with mildew. Cold breakfast. Stayed three nights but maid was never in our room to straighten up or refresh.
