Reviews for MacCallum House Inn
Review 1:It was run more like a hotel than a B&B. Lots of food and drinks to purchase in your room, so don't expect nice cookies, chocolate or port for free in the main room. There was a restaurant and bar on the first floor, so we could hear loud voices in our room directly above until 9pm (prob only an issue for rooms 1 & 2 though). You could check out movies with a room key versus picking one off a shelf on the honor system. Breakfast was in the restaurant with a voucher so you had to tip the servers versus getting the same breakfast as everyone staying via an innkeeper. Would stay again however.
Review 2:Gorgeous house right in the middle of Mendocino. Room was a mix of antiques and modern, all white, just lovely. Bed was very comfortable. Hot tub on site too and bathrobes.
Review 3:I wish there had been a chair to sit on in room 15. Older people would appreciate that! It rained the night we were there and there was a leak in the roof - right over the bed... on my husbands head. When I reported it the next morning, I would have appreciated some token of apology.
Review 4:Nice location. Wonderful gardens. food was excellent.
Review 5:If you stay inside the main house, there is a restaurant/bar there, which can be loud at night if traveling with young children. However, most noise is done b 9:30/10pm.
Review 6:Great location. Old Victorian styled B&B. Very nice breakfast, spacious room and great location. Very friendly staff.
Review 7:Restaurant service awful, the staff really didn't seem to have any idea how to do their job. Also the bed was really really squeaky - woke me every time I turned over!
Review 8:Great location. Good welcome from reception. Lovely old building & bedroom very spacious. Food good.
Review 9:Restaurant closes at 8:30, by the time we came back from watching the sunset the restaurant was already closed and everything in the town so we ended up having dinner at a local bar. Restaurants should close later
Review 10:We liked the room and the bed was very comfortable
Review 11:It is old so maintenance of the hotel is ongoing. We are hopeful they will pave their included parking lot.
Review 12:We loved the location, ocean views from our room, restaurant, bar and deck, kindness of staff and recommendation of places to eat. The included glass of wine each evening and DELICIOUS breakfast were a perceived and appreciated value to us.
Review 13:I was early arriving and told inaccurately that I could check in an hour later. Also, the hours for dining room and bar were limited during the weekdays. I would have adjusted my schedule to eat or drink on premises. But as it was, I spent my money elsewhere.
Review 14:The location is amazing and the bed luxurious!
Review 15:Stayed at Room#6 and it was freaking haunted! We all didn't get a wink of sleep as the presence was too strong, that is, knocking on wall, walking in hallway, etc.
Review 16:The view was awesome from our room. Linens were crisp and clean; wifi was excellent!
Review 17:To charge almost 200 usd for one night including breakfast, and then charge 4usd for a glass of orange juice is just stupid. And then to automatically add 5usd tip to waitress in breakfast room for doing nothing more than giving us breakfast is plain rude. Destroyed much of our good inpression. Also the rooms are not very noise insulated since this is old house.
Review 18:Location was good. Room very nice. House and garden was impeccable and very nice.
Review 19:No support offered to take cases up stairs, as a more mature couple. A little disorganised re getting table in restaurant both dinner and breakfast. Could not understand why one needs to pay for juice at breakfast!
Review 20:Everything, amazing stay. Fabulous room, great dining experience, met wonderful people. Incredible gardens, a haven to be remembered.
Review 21:we stayed in main house, room 2, noisy, directly above dining hall..bed creaked, being an old and experienced traveler, thought the b&b was lacking in guest comforts. Not my kind of place.
Review 22:staff were nice, polite, eager to please. Food and serving staff were wonderful.
Review 23:The bright light shinning in our room the first night. (Thanks for turning it off for us :)
Review 24:The desk staff was great! Helpful, funny and professional. Herman took us on the mountain bike ride, so fun!! He's a great guide!
Review 25:My husband and I stayed only one night in the Barn. It was perfect for us and we loved it's comfort and charm. We would return and ask for the same accommodation. Dinner and breakfast were wonderful and the staff went out of their way to assure our comfort.
Review 26:While we can't control the weather..yet, I believe a plan in place for power outages and people who haven't had power through out the night should have a place to go to shower and clean up for their day. As well as maybe have a place for patrons to go for breakfast if unable to provide for patrons.
Review 27:I enjoyed the in house massage availability. My husband stated that it was the best deep tissue massage he has gotten to date.
Review 28:Only one thing that could have been better: there was a little noise from the restaurant in our room (#2), though it was not too bad.
Review 29:My husband and I went to Mendocino for the weekend. Our room was comfortable. We took full advantage of the small "extras", including the community hot tub and the free DVDs. Our breakfast was quite good. The location is excellent.
Review 30:We stayed at the suites and it took a little time to get accustomed to driving and parking for the meals
Review 31:Everything was great; quiet and peaceful. The food was outstanding!
Review 32:We discovered that we weren't actually staying at the beautiful old Victorian house pictured in the ad. We were about a mile up the hill in a condo type place with a faucet that broke off and an artificial fireplace that didn't work.
Review 33:Breakfast was great.
Review 34:No juice with the breakfast......really? Absolutely no offers of help to get a heavy suitcase up the narrow, steep stairs.
Review 35:The decor was right up my alley since I'm an avid antique collector, however they need to keep the antiques in good working order. I had to ask twice to get them to fix a broken desk in my room yet it was never done. The breakfast was most delish. Could have included some sausage with the pancakes though. Loved the high quality sundries in the room and the towels were heavenly soft yet some were stained.
Review 36:Wi-fi connection was a bit weak. The bed a little bit soft but I think that is just a matter of personal preference.
Review 37:I loved the breakfasat. It is included in the room rate and is delicious. Dinner at the reataurant was fantantic. The room we had was well provided with all kinds of goodies. I will book this hotel again.
Review 38:Reception was great. Restaurant/bar staff verged on clueless, pleasant but clueless. I've owned and managed restaurants, and there are simple tricks to make people feel attended to. Staff here didn't know a single one! Also, our room had okay wi-fi. Apparently others did not. This is 2014, friends!
Review 39:Great location right in the heart of town. Room, bed, bath, view, very nice. Tasty breakfast, nice free drink in the evening.
Review 40:There was only one small thing that didn't really impact overall - the bar closed quite early, so when we went to use our drink voucher on the way back from dinner at 9:35, the bartender was just closing up. Everything else was excellent.
Review 41:MacCallum House Inn was a delightful surprise. Our room was lovely, very comfortable, bright and friendly, with a big claw foot bathtub in the bathroom. It was convenient for everything around Mendocino (Mendocino isn't very big) and it's set in a beautiful garden. The included breakfast was delicious as well. All in all, awesome!
Review 42:We forgot our free breakfast voucher in room and hostess was a little over the top about it. Waiter wasn't worried about it.
Review 43:Last minute reservation got us a great room. It rare that a hotel bed is more comfortable than my bed at home. Free breakfast was wonderful, not your typical free breakfast fare.
Review 44:Staff were excellent and exceptionally accommodating. Food was great and loved our room.
Review 45:No prices in the room for the items in the mini bar. Staff said they would make a copy that never showed up.
Review 46:Breakfast was very good
Review 47:The food!
Review 48:Bathroom with glass doors. A bit noisy.
Review 49:Nice location. Large room. Good breakfast on sunny porch.
Review 50:Convenience, staff
Review 51:Breakfast was amazing and our room in the main house was unbelievably cozy. We loved it.
Review 52:The amazing cliffs were a thrill to explore, the bed sheets: the most comfortable I've ever enjoyed, and the breakfast was beyond delicious!
Review 53:Food! Terrible!!
Review 54:Location and building
Review 55:Excellent banana split! Breakfast was delightful, however we ventured out for dinner. Overall, satisfied with our stay.
Review 56:The food - 3 breakfasts and 2 dinners - was excellent. Interesting cocktails.
Review 57:Dinner at the restaurant was superb. We stayed in the main house
Review 58:None.
Review 59:Nice room.
Review 60:The power outage
Review 61:The way the staff. Especially Norman , handled the power outage
Review 62:everything
Review 63:Room was a bit warm, with no fan or air.
Review 64:Beautiful, great location, good food, friendly staff, comfy bef, clean room.
Review 65:Nothing
Review 66:All of it
Review 67:Too many stairs to climb to get to room
Review 68:Location was great
Review 69:The rooms in the main house don't have the sense of privacy that the cottages outside do.
Review 70:Great location. Cottages are spacious and private
Review 71:Room 15 nice, but not much more than a regular hotel inside. Outside and grounds very pretty.
Review 72:House itself interesting. Bar and side porch nice for dinner and breakfast.
Review 73:Quite a wide range of rooms yet not sure that ours warranted the over-arching description "de luxe" being somewhat dark, short on storage (we didn't unpack) and small compared with other hotels we had stayed in on previous nights.
Review 74:Attractive hotel with good character and an important site in Mendocino. Helpful staff, especially whilst we decided which room to take. Aspirational restaurant attracting both hotel residents and local people.
Review 75:The add-ons for breakfast - why is OJ an extra that has to be paid for? Given the overall cost for the stay this is a minor expense.
Review 76:The location, room, gardens and the food
Review 77:Overpriced at $149 + Tax for 1 night Room was poorly furnished withold(not antique) furniture. Breakfast was included but limited- maincourse +tea/coffee. Everything else is extra $ They also charge anadditional 18% gratuity on the breakfast value
Review 78:nothing at all
Review 79:perfect Victorian/ New England style building with lovely gardens and resident hummingbirds Excellent meals and polite, efficient service
Review 80:Our room was situated in a separate cabin and there was a motor running all night, nearby outside the room that created a loud hum.
Review 81:Great location with Mendocino right on the coastal bluff
Review 82:Breakfast was complementary, sort of. Charged extra for juice, toast, cereal fruit. Too many bossy notices in the room. Staff did not seem too bothered. Noisy fridge and wobbly loo
Review 83:Very pretty setting, historic house with a lovely garden. Comfortable bed and clean room
Review 84:I liked the appearance of the building and the grounds. It had a nice rustic seaside charm about it. The room was cozy and the complimentary breakfast was well prepared.
Review 85:You might provide a step stool to get up onto the beautiful old sleigh bed. It was so tall! Also, a blind in our room was tied open so tightly that we couldn't lower it. It's a good thing no one could see in our window.
Review 86:We loved the Victorian décor, the delicious meals, the location, the view out our upstairs window--really the sitting room right outside our room's view, and the quiet at night.
Review 87:No public area indoors for relaxing outside of your room. I reserved adeluxe room, but learned, the day we left, that deluxe is the fourthfrom the top of a list of five. The room was pleasant and reasonablycomfortable, but certainly not deluxe by any definition.
Review 88:We enjoyed a very comfortable and pleasant stay. The gardens arebeautiful. The restaurant was very nice and the food was good.
Review 89:the food was not as good as everyone was raving about.
Review 90:the ambiance, beauty, friendliness and amenities. It was the most beautiful of all the places we stayed at during our trip
Review 91:I think you should let people know there are a substantial number of stairs, and they can be difficult for older travelers.
Review 92:The view and the fact that they serve breakfast and dinner at the property.
Review 93:Tv is a yuky new feature, quite a few small details missed; poordraining sink, toilet roll holder failure, etc.A Little more wear andtear than in past visits. Nothing too serious, but hope not a trend
Review 94:Quirky charm, atmosphere, location, responsive staff
Review 95:The area was lovely, on the coast with scenic views. Luxury suites were in a separate building which is newer than the house, easy to find and very comfortable. Village is quaint and has some good restaurants. We are planning another trip.
Review 96:Quite expensive for a room that was not part of the main compound. $6.00 for a bottle of water is more than a 5-star hotel charges.
Review 97:Room was well-appointed, compound grounds were nicely landscaped.
Review 98:We did not like not staying at the historic house and being shipped to a different house four blocks from where we thought we were booked into. There was no indication of this switch at the time of booking.
Review 99:Given credits for meals but did not receive full value of credit if you ordered a side order even though the main meal did not cost the full amount of the credit. Was told we would receive $10 credit if we did not receive maid service; was only given a $8 credit.
Review 100:Beautiful room. Excellent food.
Review 101:People in the luxury suites need to be forewarned that breakfast, which would be served to those in the main house, is a short walk downhill going but uphill coming back to the suites if they want the great complimentary breakfast--no room service. Same is true for other meals desired in the dining room. We found the walk fun but those with disabilities or bad weather may not feel so happy about such jaunts. Car parking is not a problem in the main facility but they may have to park on the grass rather than the parking lot when they move their car due to size of the lot. But we are going back in January 2013, looking forward to it and staying again in the suites.
Review 102:Excellent location, very good service, historical charm, the suite we were in was the luxury suites physically apart from the main building.Good in excellent but their peach souffle desert was just out of this world! Found the staff friendly and helpful--but remember to ask questions. The price may seem a little high for some folks but when you consider the full service breakfasts, the quality of the food, discount dinner coupons (one for each night), and the $10 credit for green practices such as keeping your sheets more than one day--the price is really high but reasonable with its amenities. We loved it and had a great time.
Review 103:When we booked we had not realised that we would not be staying in the inn but in the suites which were on a hillside overlooking the town. Had we known this we would not have booked as my wife was waiting to undergo a surgical procedure on her knee after our vaction. Please note that the room itself was excellent.
Review 104:Excellent room.
Review 105:On reservation no indication was given that accommodation wasn't within MacCallum house .On arrival we were advised that rooms were in another building separate from the house. We were provided with a map to find the house the map was not sufficiently accurate. We did find the find the house eventually..Dinner in restaurant was not a relaxing experience as bar and serving staff appeared rushed / tense .They may have been short staffed?. Breakfast was a bit of a shambles slow service staff who had difficulty understanding orders no clearing finished plates order not completely delivered
Review 106:Comfortable accommodation
Review 107:The fee for the room we stayed in was not worth it, It should have been half that price. We were suppose to be able to have access to the hot tub but were not given a key so we did not have the priveledge.
Review 108:The room was sapcious and comfortable
Review 109:Just loved it all
Review 110:I tend to judge hotels by the linens. These were excellent at the MacCallum House! The ambience, service, and breakfast were great for the price.
Review 111:We did not have air conditioning, and a fan would have been appreciated.
Review 112:Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Review 113:Staff was super friendly. Food was amazing! Room was beautiful.
Review 114:towel bars fell off the wall, no grab bar in shower, office on second floor.
Review 115:charming garden, friendly staff
Review 116:carrying luggage up stairs
Review 117:decor, food, setting
Review 118:power out shower strength
Review 119:comfortable bed
Review 120:I loved my cottage with the private hot tub!
Review 121:Menu needs more variety, need more appetizers need more regular dinners not all gormet
Review 122:Cozy,quaint,personable....lovely!
Review 123:Great location. Accommodating. Excellent food/service. Super-comfy room. Quiet. Relaxing.
Review 124:Room and access (too many stairs; no baggage help
Review 125:Service & Food
Review 126:Expensive.
Review 127:Great location, atmosphere.
