Reviews for Americas Best Value Inn Golden Bear Inn

Review 1:The location is not near downtown, but it's still convenient for me. The room is a little smelly when I came in, but it's better the next day.

Review 2:The staff are very nice. When I checked out, the price was wrong in the system, but they helped me to fix it in the following days.

Review 3:The gentleman at the desk was rude and kept me waiting five minutes while he socialized with his friends. I wasn't given any documentation upon checking in and the office was closed when I departed at 7:30 so never receive any receipt for my stay. The experience was strange and awkward almost third-world like in Berkeley California. Not sure I'd go back.

Review 4:Window above bed did not lock properly. Curtain partially broken from rod. Didn't feel too safe at first as my room was by the street corner and down a darkish hallway to access it.

Review 5:The location was good with close enough proximity to downtown. Bed was comfortable. I would probably stay here again as the price was decent for Berkeley and my budget.

Review 6:TISSUE-thin walls. Could hear everything everyone said in the next rooms, outside, in the parking lot. People around us yelling and slamming doors till 2 a.m. Staff couldn't have cared less. No one even asked if we enjoyed our stay, or opened the door for anything other than taking money. When we went to check in she told us she was in the "middle of shift change and would need about 5 minutes" - but then she took a new couple before us, when she was finally ready to serve. In the room the carpets were filthy, the bathroom door wouldn't shut unless you completely slammed it, and the shower door did the same. The towel bar is wood and moldy.

Review 7:Ability to catch a campus-bound bus across the street. Free parking.

Review 8:The view of San Pablo ave. But it's worth it for the price.

Review 9:It's a locally owned business with a very sweet staff. The building is older which gives a classic feel and tons of character to the rooms.

Review 10:very loud noise from passing trains at night & morning. no air conditioning noisy fan no exhaust fan in bathroom poor wi-fi reception angle-parking space too narrow coffee-maker produces half-a-cup only

Review 11:good supply of clean towels, shampoo, body lotion. good supply of water for the shower. good firm beds good location to buy food & gas.

Review 12:Old building. Windows didn't lock. Corridor had cigarette butts.

Review 13:Nice older building, large room, but property is old and tired, in need of repairs and maintenance.

Review 14:At least 30 mins to SF, but that's your choice... No breakfast.

Review 15:Didn't have any problem, room was OK, coffee machine in there, WiFi working enough good, staff there when I needed them, easy check-in and check-out...

Review 16:breakfast space was so small that there were no chairs for most of the morning. Would like to get rid of all carpeting and go to smooth floors that are cleaner

Review 17:location, breakfast, parking, room was clean.

Review 18:I asked to change original room since it was tucked away in a corner. I was easily accomodated. The place is dated and is definitely a no-frills type of hotel, though coffee is always available in the lobby. Main office is closed late at night. For a more reasonable, safe place on the outskirts of town, it is a good deal.

Review 19:The staff is very friendly and accomodating. Location is a touch out of the city but easy to get in and out of downtown from here. Nice area to bike around. Dated, but clean.

Review 20:Waaaay too expensive for a poor inn. No breakfast. Internet did not work well. Office closed 9:00 - 10:30pm "out to dinner"

Review 21:Reasonably clean

Review 22:The bed was a bit firm. I liked it but my wife didn't quite so much. Also, there was a vaguely unpleasant smell.

Review 23:It wasn't horrible by any means. For a one night stay, it was a decent choice for my money.

Review 24:That there wasn't breakfast..but that's neither here nor there.

Review 25:I loved the room we received it was in its own corner and private. The room was very spacious and good quality.

Review 26:Would become congested when in the room. The carpet is in terrible condition, the toilet did not flush correctly (creating constant noise and loss of water) and the bathroom had not been cleaned too well.

Review 27:Not too far from where we had to be.

Review 28:when we first got there, the toilet was intermittently running and wasting water during our historic drought. I called the office, and eventually someone came. He looked at it, then said he would fix it the next day, which he didn't. To top it off, I got bit by bedbugs that night! No wonder the place reeked of bleach when I checked in. They probably had an infestation and didn't warn me. Stay away from here.

Review 29:Nice tile in the bathroom. That's the only good thing I can say.

Review 30:If you stay for a night like us it is ok but room incredibly stinky, beds are noisy. Please consider before book. also is wi-fi very poos and slow.

Review 31:nothing

Review 32:A motel like this can be expected in the middle of the desert, not in the center of Berkeley. And the price was more in line with Berkeley than the desert...

Review 33:Clean

Review 34:Room was rather dark, squeezed into the back and not really pretty or modern. Bathroom was tiny and could have needed an update as well. No breakfast. Too expensive for what was offered.

Review 35:Staff was nice, room was clean.

Review 36:Bed and pillows were quite stiff. Very loud if your room is near the road - couldn't close the bathroom window to cut off the noise.

Review 37:Decent location near UC Berkeley and the Friendly staff who helped me with a very late check-in.

Review 38:Wi-Fi stinks - kept dropping throughout our stay; very slow The tub in our room was old, stained, and splattered with the remaining pieces of old appliques

Review 39:attentive, polite staff comfy beds clean

Review 40:Old room the bed felt like box springs grease points on walls "like car grease" the door lock wouldn't work and the housekeeper thought at 8am she would just open the door no knock first.

Review 41:The front desk staff was very nice and the outside roses are nice but other then that?

Review 42:Bed was like a rock, no padding.

Review 43:The setup as a courtyard was a nice safety quality for the area. This also have a cute Mbiance wuth the style of building and the roses and lights around.

Review 44:The room was smelly, with a broken fridge. The neighborhood.was super noisy at night, it was really hard to go to sleep.

Review 45:very friendly and helpful staff convenient location, though very far from UC campus

Review 46:Too close to railroad tracks. Noise was disturbing for light sleepers. Not a lot of eating choices nearby.

Review 47:The place was ok. Room in need of refurbishing.

Review 48:Was a bit cold during night. Walls are thin.

Review 49:Convenient parking, and close to a bus stop that goes directly to the University. Large and clean room. The bedroom is not facing the street, so you don't hear much noise. Very good breakfast at Café Leila (1-2 min walk).

Review 50:Nothing.

Review 51:Close enough to downtown but far enough away to be quiet. Beautiful location, pet friendly, friendly staff. Clean, comfortable beds, nice showers. I stay here all the time.

Review 52:guests on either side were up and active until early am hours. room next door had tv on all night. people constantly going in and out of room!

Review 53:staff was very friendly. room was clean and what we expected.

Review 54:I stayed for 3 nights in November. The first night someone talked loudly on the phone in the room next to me all night, so the walls are thin. I mentioned the problem to the staff the next morning and they said they would talk with the guest. No problems after that. Just bring earplugs or a white noise app.

Review 55:Nice amount of space. A bit shabby but serviceable and clean. Nice staff.

Review 56:- Bed was a bit stiff but honestly, not a big problem. - It is a little bit noisy at night from all the cars. I heard a lot of honking! But not really their fault. - The sign was partially covered by a tree, which made it a teeny bit difficult to find it.

Review 57:- Finding a parking spot wasn't an issue at all. - Bathroom was clean! - Easy to get to UC Berkeley from the Inn - Fully furnished with a TV, lamps, drawers, tables, etc. Didn't have a problem finding an outlet to use either. - No issue with the staff. They were great! - WiFi worked well. Basically, if you're only here for a short time, this will do.

Review 58:more facilities could be provided in the room. also the windows should be renovated.

Review 59:staff were friendly and helpful. the room was clean and was kept clean with a daily room service. I had an easy sleep.

Review 60:I chose this motel because they advertised wifi. However, the room I stayed in had known serious problems with wifi and I had to go into the office or stand right outside it when it was closed to access wifi. Also, one of the 2 queen beds was uncomfortably hard and the pillows on both beds were too thick causing a sore neck. For what you got (and there wasn't even a hair dryer), the room was considerably overpriced.

Review 61:It was fairly close to where I had to be and it was quiet. I was only there for 2 nights and it worked out ok. Since I was there because of my wife's death (we separated 7 years before but became very good friends when she developed a fatal illness), I didn't feel the lack of amenities in the motel as much as I would have otherwise ... but it was still aggravating. But, I can say unequivocally that I wouldn't voluntarily stay there again.

Review 62:Make sure you arrive on time (till 12pm), otherwise you will not be able to get in as there is no one at the reception during the night and you even cannot call somebody to come and let you in.

Review 63:Clean room, nice staff, good value for money.

Review 64:Hotel on one of main roads of Berkeley, Staff was great, helps us to find suitable stores and places to eat arround (food - Traders Joe on university avenue - is really good). Room was good and for this price, have nothing to say against.

Review 65:My stay was perfect. Arrived late in evening and at short notice. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. The room was perfect and great value for money. Thank you to all the staff including all those that ensure the rooms are clean and tidy as well as those on the front desk who were very helpful in pointing out local facilities: bakery, cafe, restaurants, etc. Cheers

Review 66:cleanliness issues, very bad small in the room even if bed sheet smell no bad, sink did not work therefore you need to use shower water to wash teeth and face

Review 67:location

Review 68:We travel from NYC every year to visit family in Fresno. But we always stay for 3-5 days in Berkeley first, and always at the Golden Bear! Nice place for kids. Close to good cheap ethnic food Safe ( Genki restaurant is terrific.)

Review 69:No air conditioning. If a hotel like this doesn't have AC they should make it very clear before you book it. The walks are very thin and the street is very noisy. With no AC you have to keep the windows open and you get a lot of street noise. The hotel was very expensive considering no AC and it's location. Not much eating places within walking distance. Over a half mile walk to the nearest BART station. They close the lobby for lunch, dinner, and open the lobby at 8:00pm which is very late for most travelers to check out.

Review 70:The hotel was very clean

Review 71:Beds were not comfortable. Very hard. Pillows were less than awesome. Very thin walls and fairly noisy, due to guests, not the hotels doing.

Review 72:Location near UC Berkeley was great for our concerts we were attending. Staff was incredibly kind and accommodating with our requests. Cute little area.

Review 73:This place was filthy and in an area of Berkeley that was scary at night. It is not a place to stay with kids. We weren't expecting 4 star, but this place should be condemned. There were bugs, dead and alive in the windows, there was mildew and slime on the tub, cobwebs in the corners, stains on the carpets, dirt in the carpet. Just horrible. Will post my photos. Book elsewhere.

Review 74:Kept waking up through the night from sounds of big rigs and police sirens passing by on the nearby busy street. Bed was stiff and uncomfortable and left me itchy. Room was dimly lit with orange/yellow light. Carpets were brown, sticky, and felt dirty. Card readers to get into the rooms had to be frequently reactivated braise they would stop working. Not okay if you are out at night and the staff aren't around to help you.

Review 75:It had a roof, bathroom, and four walls. Okay for a quick 1-night stay (alone).

Review 76:Nothing

Review 77:Free parking. Easy to find. Older rooms but clean. Old fashion drive in motor hotel. Park your car and walk 20 feet to room. About a 20 minute walk to BART (BART does have parking) nice picnic tables plus pet friendly and have small grassy area. Cafe Leila two block walk down San Pablo. We ate there twice in back patio. Love it. We will be back. Rooms on office side are probably quiter due to traffic on San Pablo.

Review 78:Barking dogs in back were an annoyance. The walls are not soundproof.

Review 79:We loved the location. The place is older which gave it "charm". The staff is willing to please and accommodate your needs.

Review 80:- Water in shower didn't flow off, rather a big problem.- The room appeared clean but carpet proved to be VERY dirty (your feet got pitch black after walking barefoot for just 10 minutes). - took a "hold" of additional USD 20 (above the stated room price) on my credit card and promised to return it after we check out, hadn't done so however so far. Will have to file a formal complaint w/ the bank. - No complimentary breakfast provided.

Review 81:Nice room, upgraded our original reservation into a larger room at nocost (as they didn't have our size room available).

Review 82:Terrible place for an intimate couple. Paper thin walls, extremely hard (not firm!) beds that were loud just when shifting or sitting on them, let alone other activities, terrible wi-fi connection that we could never actually use

Review 83:Cute decor, friendly staff

Review 84:Non smoking, so people stand outside of your open window and smoke. Air conditioner had been removed from our room. Not sure about other rooms. Make sure you bring your hair dryer.

Review 85:Get what you pay for. The fridge & microwave were a nice addition. Girl checking us in was quick and efficient.

Review 86:Unit was a bit dated and the shower could do with some renovation. Room was very warm and only had a fan running to help cool it.

Review 87:Location suited us and we found the unit quiet enough.

Review 88:Hard bed! Old facilities.

Review 89:Location

Review 90:The staff was friendly and helpful. I can't say enough good things about them. From extra towels to a great smile when I walked in to check in.

Review 91:room had a slight odor of cleaning material

Review 92:not far from good restaurants

Review 93:Really outdated showers. No AC. No hairdryer in room available. Vending machine out of water.

Review 94:Nice staff.

Review 95:Bed was very hard, no AC.

Review 96:Easy on the budget, close to BART station, great to have frig and microwave in room.

Review 97:Nothing really.

Review 98:Owner/Manager and staff were very nice.

Review 99:It was a hot day and there was no air conditioning. There was a credit card charge which was not brought to my attention at check in

Review 100:Big clean room. Fridge and microwave. Big shower.

Review 101:We return again so I guess we have no complaints.

Review 102:Location, location, location. Price

Review 103:Far from downtown and university

Review 104:Excellent staff, comfortable bed

Review 105:No a/c. Price

Review 106:Parking

Review 107:No air condition Big noise outside of room

Review 108:Staff are great

Review 109:No air conditioning. Very old decor and carpeting.

Review 110:Proximity to Cal Berkeley was great. Friendly staff.

Review 111:No air conditioning

Review 112:Location was great and staff was very friendly. Hotel was cute and for the most part I was satisfied

Review 113:Excellent staff here

Review 114:Noise level is high for room near road. Next door was playing very loud music around 4:00pm. Nobody seems to care.

Review 115:Friendly staff and firm bed.

Review 116:Far from downtown

Review 117:The room is comfortable. The staff is kind.

Review 118:Bed a little lumpy

Review 119:the ease of access and the quiet of the room and the comfort of the room

Review 120:Traffic noise can get loud sometimes.

Review 121:The staff was very nice, helped with any accomodations that I had before arriving. Location was in a nice area.

Review 122:Wifi connection is bad.

Review 123:The sink and toilet were so close to each other there was no room for two people and toilet is too low for seniors with problems in getting up.

Review 124:Quiet

Review 125:The broken tile and ancient ironing board. I had to borrow an old leaky iron.

Review 126:I liked the location. Good value for Berkeley. Very friendly staff.

Review 127:Their internet was really slow.

Review 128:I have two Labrador Retrievers. It is not easy to travel with them. The staff was friendly and accommodating.

Review 129:No hair dryer.

Review 130:Not much.

Review 131:A nice little trip back in time. Clean and easy to find. Interesting places all around it.

Review 132:Good value

Review 133:Great hotel stay! Thanks for a great experience.
