Reviews for Hale Ohia Cottages

Review 1:It is an amazing place , each cottage are unique , very charming and very confortable. Fruits & banana bread are being deliver at night for your convenience . an heaven OF peace awaits you !!

Review 2:nothing

Review 3:nice friendly owner...excellent service - they even give you fresh papaya, fresh bananas, guava juice, and loaves of deliciously good banana bread...

Review 4:Limited self catering facilities

Review 5:Proprietor friendliness and hospitality. Fresh baked breakfast goodies Cosy fireplace Awesome location Beautiful grounds

Review 6:They provided us with breakfast and when they found out about my husband's allergies they happily worked with them! The staff were all friendly and helpful. Lovely small quiet place, not a big noisy hotel! Quite homely!

Review 7:The so called suite is a room with a tiny table. Was not a problem for us, but consider that no kitchenette is there. Breakfast is very basic (a beverage that tastes somehow like fruit, but is not juice, 2 bananas, half a papaya, 1 banana bread and 1 granola bar). Quite expensive, but honestly the area IS expensive.

Review 8:Near the Volcano Park and Volcano village. The suite has a nice bow window and the room overall is pretty. The cottages are dreamy from outside, and the garden is beautiful. Staff was very helpful and nice. I really appreciated having the menu of the nearby restaurants: they were outdated, but still gave an idea of what to expect.

Review 9:Bed was uncomfortable, room was really a basement formerly, it seemed. No privacy for bathroom cause door didn't close. Misquitos in room.Construction going on.

Review 10:The location.

Review 11:One small suggestion would be to serve breakfast in the garden. (Breakfast is placed in the room the day before.) We realized that we didn't really explore the beautiful property until we checked out! If you want more for breakfast, we recommend the cafeteria at the military camp inside the park. For around $6, you get eggs or omelette/coffee/pancakes/bacon or sausage.

Review 12:Love the location! It's so close to Volcanoes National Park that we were there super early in the morning and even in the evening. The park gets very hot around noon, so it's better to go early. (You can enter as early as you wish because it opens 24 hours.)

Review 13:Not the photo listed!!!!!!! Misrepresented. I took pictures as proof.Ours was old, smelly, rust in refrigerator, yellowed microwave, bugfilled house. Kids were creeped out and had to sleep with us!!! I neverwould have booked this had I seen the real photos! I will need my moneyback or sure for misrepresentation.

Review 14:There was only one bathroom, so it was a bit crowded for the four of us. Also, the Wi-Fi was quite slow. It worked, but it was very slow. There was a bit of mildew on the bathroom curtains near the window above the double bed and under the stairs in the kitchen. These should be attended to.

Review 15:A very cute and quaint cottage on a beautiful very green property. Plenty of room in the cottage, we had an extra bed, even with four people! The cleaners did their job very well and provided us with small breakfasts.

Review 16:First, this is not a suite!! It's a small, claustrophobic room with two oversized armchairs that take all the space. There was no closet space, so we had to keep all our clothes in the suitcases, using up all the remaining space on the floor. There were a few hangers hung on the waist high towel rack in the bathroom, but I don't see this a a substitute for a closet. Plus if you need to hang anything longer than a shirt, like a dress or a pair of pants, you're out of luck. What shocked me though was that the bathroom door was designed to stay ajar. Not only the door itself was made of see through boards, the type you'd use for a pantry cabinet, but there was no lock or hardware to indicate that that door was ever designed to close. On the bathroom side of the door there was a nail sticking out of the door instead of a doorknob. I took pictures in case anyone has questions. I feel ripped off and would not recommend this property to anyone, it was a terrible choice!!! For $150 per night there are other better options.

Review 17:Property grounds were nice, the cottage was clean and we liked the breakfast (coffee, selection of teas, sweet bread, butter, jam, fresh fruit, juice)

Review 18:We were told from the staff that they have rinse in shampoo at our bathroom. Actually it was just a rinse and we did not have a chance to ask for the change as we noticed it late at night. Responsible explanation is required.

Review 19:Quiet setting.

Review 20:Cute b&b close to volcanos. Breakfast of papayas and zucchini bread and fresh juice was perfect for us. No tv was also wonderful and my family of 5 (3 teens) actually played a board game together. Fun!

Review 21:If I was staying longer I would like a TV.

Review 22:Cute cottage, friendly staff, less than a mile to Volcano National Park. Great fresh papaya, and banana bread, and coffee in our room.

Review 23:Stayed in cottage 44. So cute and great for my hubby, myself and baby daughter. It doesn't have a full kitchen but worked perfect well for us for the 2 nights we stayed. Only thing which could be an issue was that their building more cottages right in front so while there was no building noise over the weekend in the week it would have been different. The location to the volcano park was amazing. We will come again.

Review 24:Great location - secluded but very close to the volcano. The room was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. Loved for fresh fruit for breakfast!

Review 25:The turn into the property is a bit difficult to find after dark. Be sure to arrive before dark on your first day.

Review 26:Set in a rainforest with fern trees and other exotic plants this cozy cottage with a super comfortable bed was a great retreat to return to after a day of hiking at the volcano.

Review 27:We enjoyed the quiet surroundings and wonderful grounds. Great location to the park and Hilo. Local restaurants in the village add to the value of staying here and not in the more commercial areas.

Review 28:Don't advertise wood fires if there are none. The after hours call phone did not work. There is abit of transfer noise from other occupants.

Review 29:Location to Volcanos National Park is wonderful. It is cute. There is no TV, radio, phone. The breakfast left in our room was nice. Staff were lovely.

Review 30:Having our own little house in the rain forest at 3000', with the fireplace and no TV distractions, was the romantic and memory-making experience which we hoped to have. It was the perfect way to celebrate a 70th birthday!

Review 31:Beds are very uncomfortable. No screens on windows- lots of butterflies in the rooms. Breakfast is minimal. In retrospect- we should not have spent two nights in Volcano to explore the National Volcanic Park. The park is a short 30 mins drive from Hilo which offers wider options for accommodation.

Review 32:Tropical landscape around

Review 33:Not a thing!

Review 34:Everything. Michael the owner is very welcoming and friendly. The homemade bread and tropical fruit for breakfast is perfect. The setting is beautiful and the room was cozy and comfortable.

Review 35:Other couple in the big house was a little noisy but we couldn't hear them when we closed the bedroom door.

Review 36:The " Continental Breakfast" included bananas, mangos, a loaf of fresh baked banana bread, carrot bread on places with a nice presention. It was nice to eat in our own area when and how we wanted.

Review 37:Michael is an amazing host. Very helpful and incredibly meticulous - no details were spared. The grounds were impeccable. We stayed in cottage 44 and it had lots of character. Breakfast was delicious and the perfect portion!

Review 38:the humidity, it's a little chilly in the morning.

Review 39:liked the way that we are surrounded by woods, and it's just 5 minutes drive away from the volcano park.

Review 40:They definitely need a new banana bread recipe.

Review 41:We thought the little cottage was quaint, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom/room was clean. We were late checking in (and visited the Jaggar site to see the crater at night) so we literally just came in, slept, and left the next morning to continue our itenerary. I would stay again, but can't give anybody much more guidance than that!

Review 42:Breakfast is not frestly prepared, basic one.

Review 43:Location is good (just opposite to the volcano villages), easy to find, clean and comfortable with dehumidifier and heating. The garden is so beautiful.

Review 44:Nothing we didn't like.

Review 45:We really enjoyed the Hale Ohia Cottages. Just down the road from Volcano National Park. We went to the rim after having dinner at the Kilauea Lodge (best dinner on the Big Island) and recommended by Mike. Mike was a great host and accommodating to our needs. The grounds were beautiful.

Review 46:Great staff, fresh papaya, lime and house made citrus loaf. Great location close to village of Volcano and the National Park. Comfortable beds, nice linens. The cottages are quiet and private. Rustic but nice.

Review 47:The CD player didn't work, so we had to make our own music.

Review 48:Our cottage had a cozy round bedroom with an incredibly comfortable bed illumined at night by the dancing flames of a gas fireplace.

Review 49:Because it's right on the highway (although you can't see it), it can be a bit noisy while you're outside or if you have the door open. (Traffic dies down at night, though.)

Review 50:This property is in a beautiful garden setting with lush foliage and chairs nestled here and there. The rooms are all different due to the historic nature of the property which gives it wonderful charm. The breakfast was lovely and generous and all the staff were very pleasant. The location (close to Volcano Village and the park) can't be beat.

Review 51:Suggest you have a small heating baseboard hard wired into the cottage. The space heater cord gets very hot and seems unsafe. Cord became very warm and socket connection loose. Sure would not anything to happen to this delightful place. We were cold during the night since using that tiny heater concerned us.

Review 52:Ashly did a wonderful job of welcoming us. Explained many things and graciously answered our many questions about this part of HI. Thank you so much.

Review 53:Charming cottages. Fantastic location, practically next door to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Lovely grounds. Wonderful continental breakfast, especially the homemade bread. Peaceful and relaxing.

Review 54:The only shortcoming but not a big issue is the bathroom which was a bit cold as it had no heater and the heater in the bedroom was not strong enough. Also, it would had been good if there were curtains on the main glass door of Camelia Cottage.

Review 55:Mike the proprietor was very friendly, accommodating, and helpful in providing tips to visitors to the area. Our Cottage had the modern conveniences but rustic and had quaint little personal touches, e.g. flowers picked from the garden, fresh fruits and homemade bread. The main house is beautiful with a well kept and manicured gardens. It also has a souvenir shop selling craft products, some from local artists and some their own brand. We would love to come back to Hale Ohia whenever we are around the area and will highly recommend it to others!

Review 56:We stayed in the carriage house which shares walls with other rooms. Despite noise level warnings to other lodgers, we found ourselves woken by talking, walking and slamming of doors in the night. That was the only drawback.

Review 57:We loved the privacy, garden, location, ease of breakfast and coming and going.

Review 58:We stayed two nights in one of the cottages. They are small but they made the best out of it. There is a gas chimney - and we needed it :-). It can get cold and wet. Breakfast is provided at the cottages - you have a water heater but no stove; there is a fridge. Note that the options for dinner in the area are not many. All in all it is a quite place useful if you want to spent the day in the National Park without driving much.

Review 59:Overall, it is a great experience to stay at this retreat which is a very restful place. A suggestion for improvement would be hot breakfasts being served at the main house. This would add personal service which is expected of a B&B and add value.

Review 60:The Queen Anne buildings architectural style and details and the surrounding landscape with rich foliage immediately make us want to stay longer. The hospitality of the staff is excellent. There are great Restaurants within walking distances. The volcano park is just a 5 mins drive away and experiencing sunrise at the volcano was so convenient.

Review 61:The only discomfort was the hardness of the bed mattress.

Review 62:Excellent value. We wanted a place over night to explore Volcano Park. This was the perfect place. Super staff thank you Ashley! Beautiful grounds.

Review 63:Charming cottages set in the rain forest within two minutes of the Park...very clean and comfortable with an exceptional innkeeper and attentive staff....freshly made breakfast breads and delicious mangoes...a really nice gift shop with articles from local artists. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hale Ohia Cottages and highly recommend it.

Review 64:Nothing.

Review 65:Very quiet, historic cabins, lots of character. Would definitely stay here again. If you need glitz, then this isn't the place for you. If you like cozy and reasonable price, then this is the place for you. Friendly staff.

Review 66:The cottages are quaint and very well-kept on beautiful grounds. This is a very short drive to Volcanoes National Park. We really liked the daily fruit and bread.

Review 67:The freezer did really freeze in the mini frig. Ice cubes never formed. It was no biggie though - we just had a few sodas.

Review 68:Excellent location within a mile of National Volcano Park. Yummy homemade bread and fresh fruit. Ground coffee. Wifi worked great too!

Review 69:It was secluded with beautiful grounds. The room were all furnished different and very comfortable. We had fresh homemade citrus bread and fruit for breakfast.

Review 70:Unfortunately, a large family came on our last night and stayed at the cottage closest to us and were very loud :( but that's not Hale Ohia's fault... Some people are just rude.

Review 71:We stayed for the first half of our honeymoon vacation to Hawaii. Everything about this place was perfect! The owner is so sweet and goes out of his way to make your stay as amazing as possible. The location is perfect if you are going to Volcano national Park (which you should definitely do) I would definitely go back and I would recommend Hale Ohia to everyone! In one word: Charming.

Review 72:Location was great, very close drive to Volcano and the small town itself. People have complained at the lack of breakfast but we were more than satisfied with the cakes, coffee, fruit that are laid out in advance in your room. The little banana loaf was yummy!

Review 73:One side of the bed sloped so that person on that side needed to sleep in middle of bed! If you spoon, then no issue!

Review 74:Quiet, lovely grounds very near to the Volcanoes National Park. Our cottage was charming and quirky with a lovely view from each window and a front porch on which we had our morning coffee.

Review 75:no cooking in the room only had coffee pot wifi was spotty in the room no on site laundry but one was close by in town.

Review 76:close to the national park cooler than down by the beach by 10deg quiet area no traffic

Review 77:Coffee maker was a bit dirty. Breakfast is yummy (fresh fruits and delicious banana break) but it's a pity it's not offered in a breakfast room along with some fresh coffee and at least some bread and cereal.

Review 78:The cottages are beautiful, out of a Disney tale. It's situated just 1 or 2km from the Volcano National Park entrance, so really handy if you're visiting it.

Review 79:Our room felt very humid after rain shower.

Review 80:Great property and cottage layout... Ideally located for the volcano national park visitors... Staff was welcoming and provided useful information.

Review 81:The "breakfast" was just a piece of fruit and cake. We weren't impressed with it at all. Would have preferred a bagel or piece of bread. It was too expensive for what it was.

Review 82:The location is very nice! The surroundings are amazing! Beautiful garden. The cottage we had was pretty spacious.

Review 83:Hale Ohia is set in beautiful, lush grounds. We stayed in the Master Suite in the main building. It was very comfortable and quiet with lots of space and everything we could need. A delicious home-made breakfast of fresh fruit and banana loaf was provided each day. We would highly recommend this as a place to stay.

Review 84:The only thing I would change would be to have better window and door coverings for more privacy.

Review 85:The cottages were beautiful. The beds were firm, which I love. The staff was welcoming. The hotel was close to everything we wanted to visit. Our stay was great.

Review 86:Immaculate room. Roomy and different than a chain. The setting is gorgeous, secluded and green. 3 miles from the park. When we checked in, he gave us tips on seeing the park and they were spot on. Breakfast is in your room- fresh baked fruit bread, fruit, juice- which was very nice. Highly recommended.

Review 87:None, everything was wonderful.

Review 88:Peaceful get-away, friendly staff, beautiful English cottage like facilities, kids were welcome, wonderful continental breakfast and perfect location to visit Volcano National Park.

Review 89:The cottage is cozy and pleasant. The garden is beautiful and relaxing. The gas fireplace works very good.

Review 90:Wish to have some different breakfast if stay for more than one night

Review 91:Location, the decoration of the houses, hospitality of the owner, nice breakfast

Review 92:Room had no TV and no hot water after one person showered.

Review 93:The location and breakfast.

Review 94:Location

Review 95:Perfect, very friendly

Review 96:Beautiful place specially the gardens. Cozy and great breakfast in your room. Convenient location.

Review 97:No complaints.

Review 98:Location, gardens, friendliness, breakfast.

Review 99:Parking, need to put in a sidewalk to cottages.

Review 100:The privacy and the quietness.

Review 101:Great place to stay! Quiet and quaint. Great staff. Great location. Close in but not too close!

Review 102:We liked getting breakfast the afternoon before so we had flexibility the next morning. The unit was close to the park.

Review 103:Loved the place. Highly recommended.

Review 104:pretty much nothing :)

Review 105:Bed was really comfy and breakfast was great. The cottage is really beautiful as well. Wi-Fi works pretty good everywhere.

Review 106:Very nice room and scenery, close to Volcano national park. Nice breakfast of papaya, sweat bread, juice and coffee or tea, served in the bedroom.

Review 107:Peaceful and quiet retreat with (gas) fireplace for the cold nights. Great bed and lovely surrounds.

Review 108:very friendly, great location

Review 109:The fact that this was a historic property, and the facility manager was so helpful with information about the town and the Volcanoes National Park.

Review 117:The Hawaiian style of the room in spite of it being old It was located in what felt to be a rainforest. Easy access to VNP.
