Reviews for Volcano Fern Forest Retreat

Review 1:Lack of clear signage and lighting may make it hard to locate the place at night, gps does not pick up. However, Lenny did provide instructions once we called him, so r commended to do so first.

Review 2:Cozy, clean, well-maintained suite with plenty of privacy!

Review 3:The host is very kind and the room is very clean and comfortable. It is a very quite place. Nice decoration with Asian style in my room. Very near to the volcano national park. You need a GPS to find the house.

Review 4:Some distance out of town down small roads, not easy to drive on.

Review 5:Surrounded by rainforest, quiet and secluded. Owner had torches, binoculars and umbrellas to borrow for viewing the volcano.

Review 6:A special staying at a special place, Volcano. we felt the difference, so much getting in touch the nature. Lenny, the owner, is nice, hostility and friendly ,make us open a new eyes to us to living as well thanks Lenny, thanks Booking.com. David.

Review 7:Nothing!

Review 8:Location was great, peaceful and tucked out of the way! Great host who is full of good info on the area, and where is best to look at the volcano/lava flows. Good spacious room, small kitchenette, and nice breakfast made every morning of your stay. I would highly recommend coming here as part of your stay in hawaii (big island) if you are coming to the area. You'll definitely feel relaxed, and want to return!

Review 9:It was a quiet little getaway and the owner was accommodating and friendly. The surroundings were very picturesque, displaying the variety of plant life characteristic of a rainforest.

Review 10:There was not a sink in the kitchenette and the small refrigerator needed more ice trays.

Review 11:Lenny, the owner was very friendly and helpful. The suite was equipped with everything we needed. Lenny pays great attention to details when equipping, furnishing and supplying the suite.

Review 12:The peace to listen to the bird song in the forest garden. Lenny was the perfect host and his mum's cake on the guest tray was delicious. Beautiful room in a wonderful location.

Review 13:WiFi was not working. Only able to get a very weak signal on occasion, but mostly no access. I understand it is a remote location, but was hoping to have reliable internet.

Review 14:Proximity to Volcano Park is excellent. Absolutely no noise to disturb us. Lenny was very nice and did his best to make us feel at home. We would return again if in the area.

Review 15:Really secluded. Well off the main road and a little spooky to get to. A couple dogs growl at you from a nearby home as you approach

Review 16:Very nice room in, near the park. Lenny is a very nice owner and takes good care of everything.Thoughtful touches, like umbrellas, binoculars etc.

Review 17:Wifi was spotty at times

Review 18:Attention to detail, Breakfast was perfect, Room was immaculate and beautiful yet not overdone. Host was extremely accommodating

Review 19:Close to Volcano town and National Park. Hikes during day, great food in town, glowing crater views in Park at night. Lenny was wonderful and the B&B is in a beautiful quiet and remote area.

Review 20:Totally everything was fantastic .... It was way beyond our expectations and the standard of cleanliness was better then most 5 star hotels we have in .You wanted for nothing , It was totally faultless . Thank you Lenny

Review 21:Can get humid which means you might find it dewey in the morning. I found my camera a little foggy, although nothing to do with the resort, just something to keep in mind. Maybe keep some packets of silica gel from your shoe box handy.

Review 22:Owner is very friendly and knowledgeable, will recommend places to visit. Room is large and comfortable, large garden that you can visit. 10 minutes from volcano village and the National Park. Fresh fruits for breakfast from the owner's farm.

Review 23:That we had to leave. We had planned to leave early in the am and we liked it so much we stayed and relaxed until 10:30 a.m.

Review 24:We just loved the place. Beautiful surroundings together with excellent accommodations. Immaculate in all aspects and Lenny is so charming and a great host. Really didn't need to bring any essentials because Lenny provides it all including flashlights, binoculars, lunch bags, umbrellas, etc. Amazing place and Amazing host! Thanks, Lenny!

Review 25:Lenny called me to tell me the directions which helped so much! It was dark when we arrived and we found it. The GPS has you stop much sooner then you are supposed to. I felt really comfortable. We had our own bathroom and kitchen. No air conditioner but opening the windows was just fine.

Review 26:It is a little far from other attractions then the volcano but worth it.

Review 27:Loved every thing about this place What a great way to expirance the big island.

Review 28:Everything - location great - host great - comfort great - best breakfast !! You won't be disappointed - what a rest after a great volcano day !!!

Review 29:Very quiet and secluded location that's also close to Volcano and the volcano.

Review 30:The owner Lenny is very friendly and we quite enjoyed the muffin for brekky and the jar of juice provided.

Review 31:Lenny is great!

Review 32:Great rainforest location Amazing sound

Review 33:Be careful if arriving after dark Staff disappeared after getting the money Very poor breakfast

Review 34:Location

Review 35:All the comodities for breakfast and excursions for Volcano Park like Binoculars and lights.

Review 36:Homey, friendless, comfortable, attention to detail

Review 37:Truly in a "Fern Forest". The room was perfect for the two of us. Our favorite respite from traveling on the Big Island.

Review 38:Breakfast was simple, but adequate.

Review 39:Quiet surroundings in the rainforest. Decor very nice inside. Attractive gas fire most welcome on a cold day!

Review 40:Everything! Lenny was so sweet and thoughtful. A perfect stay.

Review 41:Just about everything. What a contrast from Waikiki!

Review 42:Helpful owner. Close to Hilo and National park. Clean restful Suite. Great value. Would stay there again if i ever have the chance to go back.

Review 43:This place is 8 blocks from the main road - perfectly silent, never slept better!

Review 44:well equipped nice decorated a place to relax clean the money absolut worth it

Review 45:Excellent stay Quiet Lenny was a Fabulous host Beautiful location Clean

Review 46:Lenny was an excellent host! Location and room was totally charming! Slept like a baby! Breakfast was convenient and delicious

Review 47:Very convenient for people who want to re-entry the national park and explore more fun there

Review 48:Not trivial to find

Review 49:Beautiful room, good atmosphere and fantastic service! Thank you Lenny for a great stay. Highly recommended

Review 50:Not great value for money. The suite is overpriced. There is no everyday cleaning or towel change and the breakfast is relatively poor. Specifically, some papaya fruits, pieces of cake, and corn flakes. If you are looking for an english breakfast that is not the case! Moreover, the place is relatively far away from Hilo (~20 miles) which is the closest city. The volcano village located near the facility has a great Thai restaurant but no other good options for food, drinks or any type of shopping. Finally do not stay there if you want to visit the west part of the island. This is a good location if you intend to visit the volcanoes!! All in all, nice place but overpriced! Not a place for 230 $ / day. A fair rate would have been in the area of 150-160 $ / day.

Review 51:I stayed 4 days in this facility with my wife. The location is excellent if you want to visit and hike in the volcanoes at the east part of the island (national park and Kalapana lava flow); while residing in the middle of a rainforest. Lenny (owner) is an amazing guy, very friendly and easy going. The suite is spacious and comfortable. We really enjoyed the decoration and the morning smell of the orchid flowers inside the room. In this regard is a great place to stay!

Review 52:Although the location is near the volcano national park, there are not many things close to the hotel. All the restaurants at the area were already closed at 9pm.

Review 53:Very nice and friendly staff. Very close to the volcano national park. Healthy breakfast included.

Review 54:That we couldn't spend more time there because of a busy itinerary.

Review 55:Quiet, secluded, beautiful setting in a remote but accessible place. Everything we could want was included. Owner goes the extra mile to ensure that everything is perfect.

Review 56:Having to leave!!!

Review 57:The location was in a perfect location away from the main road giving an impression that one was in the rainforest. All we heard was birds!! Lenny, the owner was a fantastic host, and he was there to welcome us on arrival. The suite was spotlessly clean with a really cozy warm fire, and a huge comfortable bed. The town of Volcano is only a 7 minute drive away, and the Volcanoes National Park is a further three minutes up the road.

Review 58:The location is a little bit far away from the town. Since there are few people there, it's a little scaring. The room is too cool for us and we need to turn on the heater.

Review 59:The room is beautiful and comfortable.

Review 60:Honestly, the only improvement I can suggest is that the king size mattress was too firm for a comfortable rest. Perhaps this is simply a personal choice.

Review 61:A hidden gem, we truly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend this retreat.

Review 62:Would have been nice to have a full kitchen for meal prep.

Review 63:Good location. We were on bikes and the road to the house was a tad rough in places (it was raining pretty heavily when we arrived). Could use a better heater (it was quite chilly when we were there). Great host (Lenny), and very comfortable accommodations.

Review 64:A very minor niggle was the lack of Internet......but not a big deal.

Review 65:Lenny the hat is fantastic-friendly and really helpful. Also provided a super breakfast. Room is large and the setting super relaxing.

Review 66:Right away we were greeted with a warm, friendly welcome. We popped the trunk and Lenny insisted on carrying our bags into our room. We stayed in the deluxe suite and when he opened the door it was a spacious, meticulously clean suite with all the comforts of home. Lenny has anticipated and provided for any thing one might need when visiting this area including flashlights, umbrellas, a binocular and a cooler. Extra touches which enhanced our stay were the cozy fireplace and the comfortable front porch which is the perfect place to relax on at the end of the day or when you wake up in the morning. We stayed at one other highly recommended and rated B&B in this area and in the future this is the only one we will stay at. We highly recommend this B&B. Lenny is the real deal!

Review 67:It was a little cold at night. I didn't realize there was a space heater in the closet.

Review 68:Loved the surroundings, the room decor, cleanliness, and the personal touches.

Review 69:There needed to be more heat in the room.

Review 70:Very clean, comfortably furnished. There was a very good selection of breakfast food including homemade banana bread and fresh fruit.

Review 71:Careful with your rentig car, the last part of the road is unpaved.

Review 72:Very nice host and the room was lovely decorated. The location is also convenient (except that it's a bit off the main road) - it's a 15 min drive to the crater rim (Jaggar Museum).

Review 73:Nothing.

Review 74:We stayed in the deluxe suit. Everything was perfect and we highly recommend this place. The place was super clean, cozy, designed with the best taste and equipped with all one needed. It’s located in a beautiful quiet garden and close to the volcano park. We stayed for one night only, but sincerely hope to return for a longer stay. The owner is a very nice person who pays attention to the small details.

Review 75:Very clean, spacious, and comfortable. The unit has everything you need, and Lenny was very welcoming. We had no trouble finding it, using the directions he provided.

Review 76:The breakfast is relatively small (yet everything is pretty tasty)

Review 77:While the location is somewhat secluded, it is just 10 min. drive to the Hawaii Volcano National Park entrance and thus a great location for evening volcano gazing

Review 78:A little bit far from downtown. But very acceptable compared to the valuable asset of the place. As planned in the middle of the rain Forrest ... A little bit rainy ;-)

Review 79:Everything ! Honestly, one of the most peaceful place we found in big island.

Review 80:What a fabulous place to stay. The suite was spotless well stocked, the continental breakfast was perfect. The only regret is we didn't stay longer.

Review 81:Not much to say here, except that we were a little sirprised on how far away from everything it was..had problems finding it, and it is in the end of road, far in the forest (u can offcourse drive there). We did not see anyone (not even the owners). But for some this can just be a positive thing. It was extremely nice and quiet:)

Review 82:We had the queen suite, and it was nice! So big and incredible clean. The best bedsheets in the world. So luxurious:) we were welcomed with a sign from the parkinglot with or name on, made us feel really welcomed.

Review 83:the name says it all, this is a lovely fern forest retreat, a quiet suite in a beautiful setting. the room was spacious, the homemade zucchini-coconut bread was delicious. breakfast also included three types of fresh fruit, milk and juice, and kona coffee, of course!

Review 84:I was glad we ventured down in the daytime ....it's definitely off the beaten path.

Review 85:Attention to detail -- beautifully decorated, very comfortable -- everything we could possibly need. Having breakfast available in the room was such a welcome treat especially given the somewhat remote location.

Review 86:Nothing

Review 87:Beatiful setting. A very comfortable spacious room, very clean, quiet. It was furnished with everything you need for a comfortable stay. It was also a great location which allowed us to spend a whole day in the park. We also appreciated that our very nice host came by to check on us and inquired whether we needed anything.

Review 88:Wonderful B&B. Very clean, quiet and everything you need. Goodbreakfast and very friendly and helpful advice. Not far from VolcanoNational Park. Room beautifully decked out with orchids and photos.Great information provided. Thanks Lenny.

Review 89:Loved staying here! Even though Volcano was shut when we planned to visit, it was a treat to stay in this very clean and well-decorated cottage (we stayed in the Volcano Suite). The owner, Lenny, made the stay memorable and was incredibly helpful in terms of finding us some off-the-beaten-path places to visit. There is a cute and unique breakfast spread and the cottage was decorated very tastefully. We had a great two-night stay, visiting Hilo and other spots along the southeastern coast.

Review 90:The breakfasts were in the room and set out the night before. There was a lot of privacy but not a gregarious situation.

Review 91:The room was clean and comfortable.

Review 92:We had trouble finding it, but apparently forgot to print off detailedinstructions that came direct from owner when he confirmed thereservation.

Review 93:Beautiful surroundings and lovely decore. Close to the VolcanosNational Park.

Review 94:nothing

Review 95:Location Excellent for Volcano Clean tidy and spacious Our Host Lenny was the best and helped us with any questions Quiet and peaceful Surrounding environment kept beautifully Breakfast was a feast everyday

Review 96:The warm and welcoming innkeeper embodies Hawaiian hospitality... We enjoyed the guided lava hike he offered us. It was a small group and very personal... A good place to stay for exploring Volcano National Park.

Review 97:Great starting point to visit the Park. Very close to the town of Volcano. Lenny is a awesome dude who is there to help with your trip and takes amazing care of the cottages, which are more like a slice of a comfortable home.

Review 98:The host, Lenny, is outstanding and has thought of everything. It's a beautiful place to stay in a rainforest/volcano setting, very near the national park. Highly recommended!

Review 99:shower has some sliding panel system rather than a curtain, which is obstructive to taller guests. kind of far from everything that isn't the volcano national park.

Review 100:clean. well stocked kitchenette. friendly staff. nice location for nature lovers.

Review 101:The weather: unfortunately it rained a lot during our one night stay, but we shouldn't have expected any different - the area is in arain forest!

Review 102:We totally agree with all the previous positive reviews: the place is ahidden gem. Driving to the end of the road (literally) and finding thelovely place was a wonderful surprise. Lenny was an excellent host. Thesuite was well appointed and very comfortable.

Review 103:If you want to add another touch of luxery- add bathrobes!

Review 104:I liked Lenny's hospitality. The selction of teas, coffee, and hot chocolate was very nice! Te homemade bread was delicious!

Review 105:Lenny is running a beautiful retreat here, that is a short drive to the Volcano National Park. We really enjoyed our stay, the calm space provided for us. Its pure luxury, from the towels to the breakfast provided. Thank you Lenny :-)

Review 106:We stayed in the volcano suite and loved it! Lenny was welcoming and helpful. Everything you need he has already thought of from sunscreen to umbrellas. The room was private, clean, spacious and comfortable. It even smelled good! If we come back to the Big Island we will stay here again!

Review 107:There is nothing we disliked about this place. It was like a home from home. Awesome :)

Review 108:Beautiful accommodation. Super clean. Great warm welcome. Very quiet and safe. Fresh papaya and banana bread each morning :)

Review 109:having to leave.

Review 110:At the end of a quiet mountain road, you will find a lovely studio apartment, nicely furnished, surrounded by lush tropical rain forest. Perfect location for a quick trip for nightly volcano glow viewing. Lenny is the best!

Review 111:We loved staying at the Volcano Fern Forest Retreat. It was the third hotel we had stayed in whilst in Hawaii and this was by far our favourite. It was spotlessly clean, well decorated and so peaceful and quiet. For those people wishing to visit the Volcano National Park, the retreat is about a 5 minute drive. I would highly recommend the Volcano Fern Forest Retreat to anyone.

Review 112:It was a bit out-of-the-way, but that was also good, because it was very quiet and restful

Review 113:Lenny, the proprietor, takes great pride in his property, and makes certain all the details are tended to, and the accommodations are clean and upscale.

Review 114:rough access road

Review 115:very friendly and helpful host; gorgeous setting with well maintained gardens; privacy; large size room, beautifully decorated; well stocked kitchen; well supplied bathroom
